Default Flying Lesson 1 - Flip

It's closing in on sunset, and the sky is starting to darken. As the sun goes down, the October air feels a little on the brisk side, but though the sky is overcast, there's no rain due. So that's something.

Inside the Training Area, you'll soon find the space gradually lights up via some untraceable source once night starts to fall. Professor Kazmi - or Mr Kazmi, he doesn't mind which - can be clearly seen waiting for students at his usual spot along the perimeter of the area. He stands with his arms folded, watching the sky as he waits for students to arrive, and with a small selection of back-up brooms nearby for those who forget to bring their own or to collect one from the broomshed.

Also clearly visible is the large bouncy net stretched up above, which you may be familiar with from some of last term's flying lessons. As usual, it spans almost the entire area, about thirty feet or so above ground level, leaving some space to fly up and around to reach the sky above. Don't worry about the net. The net is your friend.

Gather round, students. Kamran will be starting this lesson at six o'clock sharp.

_____

OOC: Welcome to the first RPed Flying lesson of the term. There would have been Flying lessons all term up to this point, and your character should know Kamran by now. Be sure to read the rules before posting. I'll be kicking things off in about 24 hours.

CLASS PROGRESSION:
Question 1: What's the best part of flying/what might other people enjoy about flying?
Question 2: When might flips and tricks be useful, or appropriate to the situation?
Activity: Follow the lights
- Reactions/responses/feedback
Activity: Catch the lights (pink team vs orange team)
Class dismissed

She would have to fix that short- there was suddenly a jolt that originated from the front end of her broom which threw her concentration off course. The pull up she had been trying to complete? Well, let’s just say that went quite wrong. She was still clutching her broomstick handle and it was still pointing in an upwards direction. The only difference now was that instead of following her orb, Claudine was involuntarily spinning once, twice so far.

While spinning - trying not to pass out from dizziness already enveloping her, mind you - her brain thought that it had been one of the Flamsteed boys who had hit her. Probably? She vaguely recalled the outline of the twin's face, plus a shout or something of the sort immediately before the hit had reminded her of Aries or Atlas' voice.

Anyway.

There were much more pressing issues to worry about. The seventh year let out a shriek that failed to stay in. The broom went spinning four times in total now and if she didn’t pull herself together, no doubt she’d crash into someone. The thought panicked her.

No pressure, Blaze.
As any experienced flier should know the first rule of flying was that you needed to be alert and aware of your surroundings and especially other fliers. So relieved and actually happy of her success of completing a full loop-the-loop, albeit at snail pace Bella wasn't paying attention to much else then admiring Apollo as he breezed through a loop-the-loop. Holding one hand on her broom and with the other she waved a thumb's up at Apollo. She was about turn her broom to take a new shot at the green path with renewed courage when someone big and hard smacked right into her side, knocking her sideways off her broom. "Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep!" she shrieked out in surprise and fright, feeling how she lost the only hand hold she had on her broom. Frantically she grabbed at the broom handle with both her hands, feeling how her legs slowly slithered off the broom and down towards the ground. Managing to grab a hold on the broom with one hand, Bella didn't expect what happened next as she fighted to get a hold with her other hand too, so that she by sheer strength could pull herself up again, like she had seen others do. The school broom, unpredictable as many of them we're had other plans and decided to lift up it's back end and give her another hard smack right on the nose which made her loose all the grip she had regained on the broom and caused her to start falling towards the ground. Please Noooooooooooooooo!

Ash was not very impressed that Kazmi didn’t have statistics. It made her feel unsafe. But she was used to doing unsafe things, so she picked a purple light and followed it on her broom.

Hmmm. This was challenging, more challenging than she thought it would be, but she followed the light well enough, managing to make an okay loop-the-loop at some point. She continued to follow so that she could have more practice and improve. However, she was too focused on the light, and not focused enough on her surroundings. So if someone else managed to collide with her, she would be very surprised(despite the fact that there were several other collisions happening).

Fly it off? Fall it off? Those words were an alliteration and therefore, to Atlas, synonymous in the moment. Yes, he knew linguistically that was not how things worked...but frankly he did not care in the moment and they were his own thoughts so he could skew correctness however he fancied. Something that took a bit of effort as he finally made contact with the net and sprawled out on it in starfish position, wind only slightly knocked out of him and with the tiniest sort of strain to his muscles. All in all, however, he was doing just fine and his blood was certainly pumping AND probably more so than it would have been if he had actually successfully completed the trick.

Needless to say, the Flying Groundskeeper received a double thumbs up with a grin. Definitely doing THAT again.

Though...he wasn't entirely sure how he had gotten here...specifically who he had accidentally clipped. By the time he got his bearings, however, he heard the professor calling out to Claudine who was in a bit of a spin...and then collided with Bella who had not been paying attention. So, uh, at least that part was not his fault.

Rolling himself up to sit, the Gryffindor looked around for where his broom had gone off to and clumsily crawled across the net towards it while glancing up every now and then to try and make sure no one was at risk of falling ON him.

Oh no, oh no, oh no.

Claudine was going to hurl! She was going to fall off her broomstick due to dizziness then hurl! But first, the crash must occur. It was written in the stars, if you believed in that sort of thing. “Ooof!’’ The impact into Bella was strong and it didn’t help her from feeling humiliated. Was it her or had the spinning somewhat slowed? Pull it together, Blaze. Once again, the phrase was repeated in her mind, so loudly that it took her a tad longer than usual to hear Kazmi’s voice.

Right. Level her broom out. Duh. It had been the obvious thing to do, it had been something they had taught before. Claudine tilted forward slowly so that her broomstick came back to its original position - fully horizontal. Sure enough, the move worked wonders and the girl came to a halt in midair. Phew.

Claudine peered about, looking sheepish. “Thanks for your help, professor.” Keeping one hand on her broom, she used the other to flatten the hair on her head which had become quite disarrayed with bits sticking out of her ponytail. Bella? You okay?’’ she called.

SPOILER!!: question 2 catchup
Heath had no idea how his answer would go over, but he wasn’t expecting that. He didn’t think he’d said anything worthy of praise; he just told the truth. Nonetheless, he returned Professor Kazmi’s nod with an appreciative one of his own. Then they were on to something else, namely flips and tricks. He wasn’t sure what to make of that. He wasn’t one to employ fancy tricks randomly and recklessly; he wasn’t his brother! No, his flying was all about safety and practicality.

The next set of questions got him thinking. Was there any occasion when flips and tricks would be the safe and practical thing to do? He supposed a loop-the-loop could be useful if something suddenly appeared in one’s path; then you could just loop around it… But wouldn’t it be easier to just stop or move aside? That would probably depend on how fast you were going. LIke, if there wasn’t time to stop. Was he confident in that answer? Not at all, but it was the only one he could come up with. He tentatively raised his hand and said, “If someone or something, like a bird or an insect, came out of nowhere, you could use a loop-the-loop to get around it.”

Heath wasn’t the least bit surprised to hear they were doing loop-the-loops. Why else would the professor have asked that question about tricks? He listened carefully as Kazmi went over the trick, mentally repeating the instructions. Pull up on the handle while going forward but not too hard, keep accelerating, and level off when you’re rightside up again… got it! His dark eyes stayed locked on the professor throughout the demonstration. How was it that people like Fiyero and Professor Kazmi made flying tricks look so effortless?

Knowing himself, Heath doubted that he’d find loop-the-loops quite so effortless in practice, so he approached it the same way he did any new flying move. Start simple, then once he got the hang of it, try the more challenging stuff if there was time left. At the sound of the whistle, he mounted his school broom and kicked off, hovering steadily above the net. His eyes scanned the area, taking in the green and purple orbs, Which one should he follow? It was a no-brainer! Spotting a green orb to his left, he followed the trail of green lights at a steady pace.

He carefully pulled up on the broom handle as the lights led him higher and higher, and he felt the rush of air against his face. What was it that Kazmi said? Oh right, keep accelerating. He urged the broom on faster as he reached the top of the loop. Then on his way down he heard it, shrieking, and not just any shrieking. Claudine’s shrieking! Immediate panic set in. He clumsily leveled out as fast as he could and doubled back to see what had happened.

Heath looked just in time to see Claudine spin and crash into Bella, but he didn’t see who or what had caused his girlfriend to spin out. Probably for the best, as he would’ve had a few choice words for the culprit had he known who it was. His heart was practically pounding out of his chest as he watched the scene unfold, and his hand instinctively went to his wand, poised to react if Claudine couldn't right herself in time or - Merlin forbid, she fell. Fortunately, neither of those things happened. He shot Claudine a concerned look, as if to ask, You okay?

He was so distracted by the drama that he nearly forgot the activity. What was he doing again? Green lights, right. He’d lost track of the green light trail he’d originally followed so he searched the skies for another one and sped off again.

It would have been rude, and probably unprofessional to facepalm, so Kamran didn't. But, on every level except physical, that was what was happening. A spiritual facepalm. Connolly had momentarily taken her eyes off the skies, it seemed, only to make contact with the Blaze tornado. The result was fairly predictable.

The net was still very much in place below, so Kamran was not quite as concerned by Connolly falling as he was by the second smack to the face from her broom, but he instinctively sent a slowing charm after her all the same, having heard her fear quite plainly. Then there was Blaze, still spinning until... ah, there. "Not a problem, Miss Blaze," he said bracingly, hopefully encouragingly. "Happens to the best of us." And he was proud, too, that she had corrected the issue by her own steam. But... yes, he had another Slytherin to check on.

Somehow, during all this, Kamran hadn't failed to note that Nam, Evan was discovering exactly what he'd touched upon earlier, the difficulties in overlapping broom mechanics. Everything had happened a little too fast for him to say for sure whether the ultimately successful loop had been all that intentional but, either way, it was a step in the right direction.

Fox, too, continued to make progress, from what Kamran could tell as she zipped around in pursuit of one of the purple lights. He wasn't too surprised she'd chosen one of those, nor that she was doing a reasonably good job with it.

As usual, Jones had got right down to it, with the kind of focus and determination Kamran had come to expect from him - and not a bad attempt either. When Kamran looked over at him again to check his progress, he caught the tail end of that look towards Blaze, before the boy was off again.

But also. There it was again, that grin from Flamsteed, the one Kamran wasn't sure he ought to be nervous about or not. He had his eye on that boy, if for no other reason to make sure he didn't start skydiving his way back to the net again, with or without another collision. Not that he especially distrusted him, but some kids reacted to adrenaline the way others reacted to sugar, and... well...

At any rate, he returned the boy's thumbs up with a single-handed version, pleased to note he'd made it through his fall apparently unscathed.

_____

Kamran, now hovering just above the net, blasted a loud, shrill note on his whistle. "Gather round, everyone." He glanced skywards briefly, pleased to note the timing had worked out as he'd hoped and meticulously planned. "You're all making good progress - this move isn't easy, but all I ever ask is that you try. Don't worry too much about mistakes; that's just how we learn. I will say, though sometimes it's easiest to master these tricks without overthinking them, always try to remain mindful of your surroundings." Very, very important, especially moving on. Should he move on? He should probably move on.

Kamran drew his wand, summoned up a box from some tucked away corner, and opened it up to reveal a selection of jars, each of which was glowing either pink or orange, and began handing them out arbitrarily. "Now, a little game. The jar I give you will determine your team - either pink, or orange, also marked with a P or an O. Each has an attachment, so they can be fixed to the handle of the broom." He demonstrated with a glowing pink jar on his own broom, before removing it again. "I'll be releasing more light orbs, and the training area will get a little darker. I want each of you to catch as many lights as you can, and the team with the highest combined total at the end will be the winners."

What would they win? Glory. Bragging rights. Nothing more or less; he was banking on their cooperation here, or some pure and simple competitive natures. "Just as before, I'd like for you to follow a light until you complete a loop-the-loop behind it - only then will it let you catch it. Once the loop is completed, the light will slow down enough to be touched by the jar, and in doing so will be caught."

Another wave of his wand, and Kamran sent the promised lights up into the air, now in a myriad of colours, so it was nothing short of a rainbow light show up there. The effect was only intensified when he dimmed the lights even more - still not full dark, still safe enough for beginners to fly, and yet still far removed from the brightness of a fully lit training area, and for the colourful orbs to stand out. Around the perimeter, the boundaries of the area remained gently but clearly lit up, to avoid confusion in semi-darkness.

"All the lights orbs are worth one point each, but some will be more challenging to catch than others." It was more or less random, but they'd figure it out as they went "Remember, keep alert to what's around you, but try not to panic if you fall. The net is here, I am here, and many of you have been taught strategies for falling in the past." All things considered, the kids probably could have used more practice in being aware of their surroundings, but... well, they were here now. The lesson plan had the final word.

He gave another blast of the whistle. "Off you go." And then, where was that Slytherin? "Miss Connolly, I'd like to check you're in good shape to continue before you do anything else."

OOC: Apologies if the chronology of this post is a little jarring but I got unwell at the worst time and I am thinking through wet cement. Main activity time. To clarify/some additional notes:
- You can choose which team your character is on - pink or orange - just try to keep the team numbers balanced
- The green lights are still the easiest, and the purples are still a challenge, but the rest have no rhyme or reason to them - every light is worth a single point
- The lights cannot be caught until a flyer has been led on a successful loop behind them; at this point, they will slow down, and can be touched by the jars and caught
- It's not totally dark, but not brightly lit either; enough for the lights to stand out but not enough for visibility to be ~dangerously~ compromised (the orbs provide extra light too)
- Please title your post with your team and how many lights your character has captured altogether so far
- You can do this activity in as many or as few posts as you like
Please do ask for clarification if anything is unclear. I'll be posting throughout, and Kamran will be watching. I'll be wrapping up around 1am BST on 24th September. Have fun!

She was going to take a moment and recollect her dignity. Though it did help that Kazmi gave her an encouraging word. “Thanks, professor,” Claudine managed with a small smile. Then she was shaking her head as though trying to shake the remaining dizziness out of it. It truly was disappointing not to be able to complete the loops with that orb.

Soon they were moving on and the Snakette was handed a pink jar. The instructions were simple enough and she envisioned herself successfully completing many loops. Hey, a girl can daydream. She watched in awe as the lights went up. She’d be content to just stare at the lights to be honest.

At the whistle blast, Claudine was off again, pink jar attached to the broom and her sights already set on another green orb. This time she flew closer to it, her concentration split between said orb and her surroundings. As the orb began to do its thing, so did the seventh year. She copied the directions exactly as demonstrated and soon enough one loop the loop was completed.

Finally.

The orb slowed, touched based with her jar and was immediately caught.

One down.

Bella closed her eyes, waiting for the potential bone shattering and body brusing impact with the ground. Luckily no such impact occured instead she landed safely into the safety net. Opening her eyes as she lay in the net she felt how much her nose hurt and body ached and how blood started to pour down her face in quick succession. Hearing Claudine's worried call she flashed her fellow snakette a weak smile. "I'm okay. How are you? You can really fly with force, maybe you should tryout to become a beater for the snake quidditch team?" It didn't feel right to bring up her aching places of where Claudine had crashed into her or her nose.

Pulling out a handkerchief from her robe pocket Bella held it up against her nose, trying to stop the blood flow. Hearing Professor Kazmi's voice she did her best to crawl out of the net and down on the ground again. Where here broom had gotten to, she didn't have the faintest and right now she didn't care. Going over to stop in front of the the Flying instructor, still with one hand raised up to hold the handkerchief in place Bella mumbled. "I think my nose might be broken Professor Kazmi...Can you fix it? The blood doesn't seem to stop flowing...I don't want a crooked nose." Her potential bruises from the collision with Claudine wasn't as important as her nose. Bella didn't wan't to be teased for the way her nose looked, that'd be horrible.

If Quidditch was still a thing at Hogwarts, then yes, Claudine would have tried out for the Slytherin team as a Beater for sure. Oddly enough, the position appealed to her. “I’m fine. I’m just sorry for crashing into you. I’m sorry about your nose.” Gah. Now the seventh year was riddled with guilt though she knew that Kazmi could help set Bella’s nose right. It was a relief that her friend was thinking along the same line. Claudine felt a little less bad now.

With one light caught, she hovered there for a bit trying to make up her mind whether to go with a more complicated challenge in the form of a purple light. In the end, she thought that she’d go with a yellow one. On this second go about, Claudine felt more at ease; she felt as though she were finally getting the hang of completing the loops.

Her dark hair whipped behind her as the light led her into a successful series of moves and soon it was slowing down so that it could be snagged by the pink jar.

Evan was not really considering his fluke as an improvement, considering he doubted if he could recreate the event. But that didn't mean he was going to stop trying other. Taking the orange jar from Professor Kazmi as he began handing things out, he attached it to his broom and watched as the lights were once again released. There was no way he was still going to go after a purple, but he was able to spot another green light not too far off.

Leaning forward, he urged his broom to catch up to the orb. Following it closely like they'd been instructed to do before, and as the light began it's flip, he pulled up on the end of his broom and...

Full stop.

With a sigh, he turned himself around so that he could follow off again after the light. Hopefully the rest of his team was thus far faring better.

Luck was on Ash’s side today, apparently. She hadn’t gotten hit by anything... that was good. One bad experience with exploded brooms and broken arms was enough. More than enough.

She collected an orange jar, pausing for a moment to think about which light to go after. She hoped for a complex one! It would be fun, and it meant that one of her less-interested-in-flying teammates might get an easy one.

Unfortunately... the orb she followed was pretty easy. Sigh. She followed the light along, caught the light, etc etc. Well... she had a point now. But she wanted a more challenging one, so she immediately picked another light, hoping this one would be more satisfying to collect.

He spotted his light again, once more urging his broom after the floating orb of green. It took a minute for him to get enough speed to catch up to it and it seemed that just as he did, the light started on it's loop and without even much thought he tugged on his broom, following it up and around into a loop. He blinked a bit in surprise, before grabbing his jar and holding it out a little to catch the now slowed orb.

One point. Interesting it was easier when he wasn't thinking.

Off for another one that was flitting by.

Connolly need not worry about the broom; Kamran would fetch it as and when it became the priority.

"I can, Miss Connolly, not to worry," he said. Kamran wasn't professional healer, but he'd addressed plenty of broken noses over the years and had a fairly intimate knowledge of the spell. He gently guided her hand and the handkerchief away from her face, and quickly inspected the damage. "This shouldn't hurt, just a quick hot-cold sensation. Episkey." A quick wave of the wand did the trick.

"How's that feel?" Still a little concerned regardless, Kamran watched the Slytherin carefully to see if the spell had worked, and tried to get a good look at her eyes to check how dazed she seemed. "I'd like for you to be checked over by Healer Peralta as well, just in case." Two hits to the face, one resulting in a broken nose; Kamran was reluctant to send the young girl back into the air until he was sure she was fit to fly. That, and she'd probably want to check the nose for herself.

SUMMER FOREVER

Valentina still couldn't believe she had actually done it?? A proper loop? Maybe she'd lucked out and it was not going to happen again most likely. She accepted a pink jar - it really wasn't her favourite colour, orange was - but a change was nice. She attached it to the handle of her broom before taking off into the air again.

She headed straight for a green orb - was feeling too nervous to try a purple - and followed it, increasing her speed lightly. Just as the orb began the flip, she tugged at the end of her broom aaaand DONE.

WOW, she'd done a loop again!!! The blonde felt slightly proud of her little achievement as she looked down at the professor, wondering if he'd noticed that. This was so exciting!!! Now, off to find another light.

Ash picked a purple light this time, since she knew it would be a challenge. Hmmmm. Perhaps this was too much of a challenge? Anyway, she followed it around. She almost bumped into people several times, but she managed to avoid any collisions. Hey, that was fun. She got another point too!

Ash decided to follow another purple one, because she had proven that she could, and she was sure that it’d be fun. She continued along the very complicated path, trying to pay a bit more attention to her surroundings this time.

Now that she’d had her go with the average paced/challenge orbs, Claudine figured that it was time to test her skills further. For that reason, a purple orb was sought out. It didn’t take her long to locate one against the sea of other colours dazzling the Arena. As though sensing her approach, the purple light led her higher and further away from the net. This wasn’t surprising; Kazmi had mentioned this would happen. She followed it while doing her best to keep from looking down.

The purple orb began leading her through the motions. Whereas her previous loops had given her more space to maneuver, this one did not. Again she was not surprised. As best as Claudine could she followed the orb but somehow managed to slip out of formation at some point.

Darn it.

Heath followed the trail of green light and was about to start another loop-the-loop when Professor Kazmi’s whistle rang out again. Reversing course, he doubled back to gather with the rest of the group. He watched intently as the professor summoned a box, eyeing the glowing jars inside with curiosity. Hmm… he wondered how those would fit in. Fortunately, he didn’t have to wait long to find out. He listened closely, repeating the game rules in his mind. So… pink team and orange team, attach the colored jar to the broom, follow a green or purple orb, complete a loop-the-loop, and try to catch the orb. Was he getting any of this right?

Before he had much time to think of it, he was given a glowing pink jar. He had just enough time to attach it to the front of his broom before the professor sent the lights up. He glanced up, his dark eyes darting randomly from one orb to another and so on. That was rather pretty to look at, like looking at a sky full of rainbow-colored stars! He was so distracted by the sight that it took him a second to register the sound of the whistle blasting.

As the game started, Heath took off again, speeding after the nearest green orb. He’d start small, then work his way up to the purple ones, time permitting. Focusing his sights on that one orb, he followed it higher and higher, pulling up on his broom handle as he went. He kept accelerating as he reached the top of the loop, only slowing once he was right way up again. Finally the orb slowed long enough for him to inch closer to it. He reached out and… caught it! Placing the green orb in his jar, he glanced around the area, and spotting another green orb to his left, he sped in that direction.

It always frustrated her when she was attempting something but it was just out of her reach. Despite it only being her first try with the more complicated challenge, she was already annoyed with herself. Yes, Claudine was only in competition with herself. Off she went again, eyes glued to the orb intently.

This time it seemed her determination and focus paid off: the Snakette found herself moving this way and that with the orb and before she knew it, the loops were completed! That little win felt so good. Claudine was very much proud of herself; so proud that she almost forgot to collect the orb in the jar.

That was three down in total.

She hadn’t noticed at first that Professor Kamzi had called the group back together because she had been so focused on just flying and ignoring… however, she soon picked up that it was time to gather around for the next part of the lesson. She paused, listening to the instructions that he provided.

Lisa didn’t mind either colour that Kamzi was offering. Pink and orange were HER FAVOURITES! So she was fine with whichever colour she drew. She collected a PINK! jar first.

It was starting to get dark. She noticed that her surroundings were darker which would make flying a little challenging but at least the lights were easy-ish to see. She followed Heath’s lead and attached her jar to her broomstick before getting back on and floating into the air.

The whistle blasted and the game was afoot!

She soared through the air, chasing a green light in front of her. This time, she planned to go slower than before. The name of this game was to get as many as possible and to be as technically correct in her loops.

Lisa focused on the closest orb. As she approached it, it kept moving forward until it started curving upwards. She pulled her broom stick slightly up and it led her up on the steep, beginning curve of the loop, and then reached her left hand out to grab it. Ugh. Not close enough. She added more speed, following the orb around, and after the curve down, she had grabbed it.

Aha!

One orb down.

Was it possible that this one was harder than the last one somehow? Ash followed the orb in a very dizzying pattern, around and around and around until she started to feel sick. Thankfully, she was able to complete her loop-the-loop, and catch the orb. Shakily. Yeah. She landed and dismounted the broom to regain her sense of balance. Please, nobody make her walk in a straight line... who was winning? Was the activity over? WhY was the WORLD SPINNING? She'd probably be fine to get back on her broom... in a few seconds.

The not thinking thing was noted by the male Nam, so as he took off after the next glowing green orb, he decided to put the theory into practice. So instead of focusing on the movements, all he centered on was the light and keeping up with it and following it. It took a minute, but he finally caught up, keeping his eyes trained on it and his thoughts as clear as possible from anything he was doing.

So when the orb started the flip, he was simply following it and able to complete another loop. Again, it slowed, allowing Evan to reach out with his jar and tap it to capture.

Well... maybe it was time for the extra challenge and a probably poor attempt at a purple. He glanced around for it, centering on one and taking off.

Was there even an actual smile on his face??

Once Connolly's situation had been addressed, Kamran turned his attention to watching over the rest of the class for this final activity, circling around the boundary of the training area on his broom and allowing himself to enjoy the light show as he did. He kept an eye on a scrap of parchment which reflected the number of lights caught, and also of the time, not wanting to keep the students out any later than necessary, now that darkness was really starting to fall.

There was always something to be said for students who recovered from setbacks - either immediately or after taking a little time to collect themselves - and Blaze was one who never seemed to waste any time to get back on the broom, as it were. Even after the spinning situation, she was getting stuck in, pushing herself more and more, and Kamran noted several successful attempts in the process. Good.

Nam, Evan was indeed improving, there was no chance denying it now. Kamran had no way of knowing exactly what the boy was thinking, and the lighting and distance made it near impossible to see his expression, but something seemed to have clicked for him. Persistence. Progress. Exactly what Kamran liked to see.

As for you, Nichols, Kamran had noticed. The Gryffindor kept gaining confidence, it seemed, which definitely helped with improving her skills as well. He gave her a thumbs up when she looked his way, but she was off and focusing on the sky - a good idea - quickly enough that he couldn't be sure if she'd caught it.

Jones was hard at work, surprising no one. The boy - or, well, he was a seventh year, so not exactly a boy any longer, but all the same - could always be counted on to work hard at whatever task was put to him, even the daunting ones. Today was no different; Kamran watched with approval as Jones completed a loop and caught a light, as instructed.

For the record, Kamran was still keeping an eye on Nam, Lisa, too, but so far it seemed that whatever was troubling her was not interfering with her focus on his lesson. In fact, for a while, she'd seemed ultra-focused, which had its risks as well as its benefits. But the point was that she was doing well right now, completing the task he'd set with determination. Good enough for him.

Fox was another whose progress was no surprise to Kamran. She generally flew well, and was one of those students he subtly adjusted his standards for; he was satisfied, in that case, that she was going after the more difficult lights (and sticking with them, and successfully following them). He went back to watching the others for a few moments, but Kamran's eye was soon drawn back to Fox as she went in to land. He squinted through the half-light, to see that she was still on her feet - maybe his advice about not eating before class had become even more clear now - before checking his watch.

_____

Ah, good timing. The lesson was just minutes from its scheduled end point, which meant...

From where he hovered at the perimeter, just where there was space to fly back under, Kamran gave another blast on his whistle to get the students' attention once again. "Time's up, everyone. Come back in to land." He led the way back down to the ground, near to where Fox was already... well, he would just give her a moment to collect herself.

"I've seen some excellent flying today. You're all making progress, and this will continue to be the case as long as you keep putting in this same level of effort. I'm very pleased with what I've seen today." He paused to consult his scrap of parchment again, angling it just so, and using the lights above to see the numbers on it. He hadn't wanted to bring the lights all the way up just yet; it was such a nice visual effect, seemed a shame to put an end to it right away. "Congratulations go to the pink team, who just clinched a win in this last activity."

And that, as they said, was that. "You can all keep the jars, if you'd like. Whatever lights you caught will fade out by tomorrow, but the jars themselves will glow for some time." Nobody could say he never did anything for them. But... Kamran was going to avoid thinking about gifts for too long, because it just called to mind that fast approaching date, bringing with it the big five-oh. "Now, back to the castle, go get some dinner. Class dismissed." He'd be right behind them.

OOC: That's a wrap! I'll leave the thread open a little longer if you want to RP leaving, and will be closing it tomorrow. Thank you all so much for participating!

It was almost too bad that it was time to wrap up and be done for the day. Evan followed his peers back down towards the ground, forgetting what he'd learned for the day and thinking too hard on how to land and stumbling a little bit as he did so. He righted fairly quickly though, and there was still a small smile from the exhilaration of actually having done something right today.

It was too bad his team still lost, but not too terrible since it had just been practice and for fun. It's not like there'd been an actual type of reward or anything. Hearing the offer to keep their jars, Evan decided to actually do so. Grabbing his and packing it into his bag before collecting his broom so he could pack it away in the broom shed before dinner. "Thanks for the lesson, Professor Kazmi. See you next time."

He turned and headed off to complete his task - planning on being quick and pausing in the entrance hall so he could check on his sister. The mood had also been noticed by the elder brother.
