Default F&Bs Bookshelves

A large number of bookshelves cover every space within Flourish & Blotts. Some sag under the weight of the books, but they hold strong thanks to a strengthening charm. Every subject that you can think of can be found within these shelves. The first floor holds books that further the knowledge, while the second floor holds books for more pleasurable reading. Small signs hang from the ceiling or hover around the top of the bookshelves, indicating which subjects can be found in each particular area. Feel free to browse and don't be afraid to let your imagination take you to great heights!

OOC: Since all good libraries and such have a cat, Elizabeth has brought her two kittens (Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer) with her to the bookshop. So always keep an eye underfoot for a flash of fur that may or may not be one or both playful kitties. And while they're technically NPCs, feel free to interact with them/play out their actions to your heart's content <3

After that, she was free to look around for things that she actually WANTED to buy. Who knows, she might even end up buying some books that appealed to her.

Making her way along the rows of bookshelves, she added books to her basket as she came across them. Not too many left to find and then she could go and pay.

Lost in her thoughts, she almost bumped into someone. "Whoa, sorry." That was rather embarrassing, though fortunately she managed to stop herself at the last minute and avoided making things worse. Isabel looked up and saw that it was Kimi. "Oh, hey, Kimi! It's been a while. How have you been?" What had happened to him? Did he get sick again or something?

"Nice. I'm kind of the oldest. Well, I'm a triplet. I have two sisters...They're around someplace," Ethan glanced around, even though he knew they weren't in the shop with him. Honestly, he could really care less where they were. Knowing them, they found some ice cream or some boys or girls to ogle over and he wasn't really about that. "and we have a younger sibling too." whom Jess has no idea of gender or age cause we're a bum with planning like that *coughs* Really his life was easier when he was on his own. Almost made him wish he wasn't a triplet, yet he wouldn't trade them for anything either, so there was that.

"I guess so? My dad didn't start till fourth year. He was a Hufflepuff. Mum was a Hufflepuff too. Dad says that the sorting hat takes your opinions into consideration, but I'm not so sure about that... I think it's probably like 99% based on your personality and like 1% your opinion." He laughs. "I mean like, supposedly Hufflepuffs are the nice kids, but my dad threw a book at the Hufflepuff captain in his fourth year, so yea. But he's also probably one of the hardest working and most loyal people I know."
"A TRIPLET?!" Nettie's eyes opened wide with a grin. "That's awesome! I always wanted a twin sister. Or any sister really. But it's fine, I had lots of friends back in France who were girls," she added with a shrug. She had left them behind, of course, but she had no qualms about making new friends at Hogwarts. Look! She was making one now!

"Oh really? Interesting...I don't know enough about the houses to HAVE an opinion, though," she said with a shrug. "Wait, he threw a BOOK at someone?" she asked with a giggle. That sounded like an awesome story...but for another time. She noticed out of the corner of her eye that Jimmy had finally reappeared and had found her. He looked annoyed - probably struck out flirting with a girl - and she figured she better get going. She turned back to Ethan with a smile.

"You'll have to tell me about that when we get to school. My brother is here, so I gotta go," she said with a shrug, cocking her head at him to indicate he was mad about something. "I'll see you later! Nice to meet you Ethan!" she piped before bouncing on her heel and turned away, waving at him as she walked back to her brother and out of the aisle.

Summer was going to come all too soon. It was practically breathing down her neck, and yet Elizabeth knew she’d done everything she could to make the bookshop ready. It was an odd feeling, going from writing books to selling them, but she had confidence she could manage things and hopefully not have to fall back on the family savings. Besides, it wasn’t as if she hadn’t had help in setting things up, even if she hadn’t exactly changed much. Honestly, she rather liked the fact Flourish and Blotts still looked much like it had looked when she’d been a Hogwarts transfer. Now, she practically felt more like an English native than a Californian native, or American in general. Decades could do that.

Either way, she was determined not to let anyone down. Business hadn’t fallen too much during the off season, but she was hoping the summer rush would really pick things up. Turning down another passageway between shelves and stacks, she smiled a little at the sight of two tiny tabby cat tails disappearing around the corner. Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer were settling in just as well as she felt like she was.

Summer was in full swing, sure he had enjoyed the first month with his grandparents, but being back and seeing some of his friends walking around. Today though, he wanted to look around at some books for a bit. He liked reading, if it was for fun with his pals back home he could count on a fun read that made him think of other places. Climbing the stairs he began to peruse the shelves. "What will it be..." he looked at the shelves slowly wondering what he might turn up today. It wasn't most of his friends idea of a fun day, but he certainly liked to do this from time to time.

THIS was the place that Penny had longed to be ever since she stepped foot into Diagon Alley earlier in the day. It was, of course, unfortunate that she had to do boring things like get new robes and quills and such. This moment was all she had been dreaming of and it did not disappoint as she crossed the threshold and sucked in a deep breath of that great BOOK smell. It was the best smell in the world, really.

BUT down to business... Pen had a very small allotment of money to spend on things were not for school, so she had to choose her books wisely and shop smarter! That shouldn't be an issue seeing as she was used to having to be frugal. UGH. And just as she rounded a shelf she came across a boy who was talking to himself... or to the books... or simply thinking out loud. All things she was familiar with, honestly. A small smile crept across her lips as she moved around him and started to look at the spines of the books as she went. "What's your favourite genre?" she asked in a small, squeaky voice. Zach CONSTANTLY harped on her to talk to people and try to be normal... so this was the first step to achieving that goal, right?

He was just nearing the end of the shelf when a squeaky voice rang through the air. Turning his head around he noticed a girl who looked about his age. Smiling at her, he started to run through any of the fun reading books he had read that were magical.

Well there was, nope that was a muggle book... Oh what about... nope another muggle book. Well now this was about to be as interesting as him playing cards in the compartment on the train. “Uh, well I was trying to figure out which one, then I realized I’m more of a muggle reader than a wizard in reader. Never got many chances to read the books.” pointing toward the book shelves around him he shrugged.

“And what about you? Anythin’ specific?”
His Tennessee was strong today, but one day he was worried it would be some terrible mix of European and American and no one would understand what he was saying. He leaned against the sturdy book shelf and paid his full attention to the girl, “oh I’m Patrick, don’t think we ever officially met.”

Penny could feel her face burning as the boy turned his full attention toward her. Not because he was a bou per se, more because he was a person who was talking to her. She didn't do that much and honestly it freaked her out a fair bit. Be that as it may, she was going to have this conversation and be a normal person. MHM!

As the boy seemed to really think about the question, Penny took the opportunity to grab a book off of the shelf and use it to cover most of her face once she opened it, her eyes peeking over the top just enough to see him. "I read Muggle stuff, too," she replied simply, no more than a little intrigued by him. Her brother often told her she wasted her time reading Muggle literature, but honestly it was all just as interesting as the Wizarding stuff. In her opinion anyway.

"I will read... just about anything, really. But I really like fantasy novels. The ones with dragons and princesses and creatures and things," she said with a smile that he couldn't see. Using books as an escape from any harsh reality in the world, often times led her to the unimaginable worlds of fantasy. Because if you're going to escape you had better make it good! OH! He was introducing himself... "I'm Penny, pleasure to meet ya!"

His eyes tracked her movements. He found it a bit odd she was hiding behind a book but hey, if that’s what it took for her to talk to him he wouldn’t mention it. His smile perked up hearing she read muggle books. “I’m really into things by Rick Riordan, all that Greek mythology. Although I just finished Fahrenheit 451 the other day, my friends back home were reading it for their summer reading so figured I might as well too.”

He tried to read her expression but that book was blocking her, he smiled a bit to relax her but wasn’t sure he would be able to. “Fantasy novels are pretty cool.” he heard her name, Penny, that’s right he knew he had heard her name around school. “Good to actually meet you Penny.” He wasn’t exactly sure what to say, but he figured just keeping the conversation going would ease the girls shyness.

"My cat is called Cassiopeia," she added quietly as he mentioned Greek mythology. Yeah, she dug that, too! "Back home?" she inquired, her book slipping a little lower, her eyes searching his face. She knew his accent wasn't one she from around these parts, but then again she didn't pretend to know ALL ACCENTS EVER, ya know! "Do you think... do you think I could read your copy sometime?" Ya know, if it was such a good book and all.

Penny knew no strangers when it came to books.

And the smile actually did help some, her book tipping a bit lower still. AND he liked fantasy novels?! COOL! "Good to meet ya, too, Patrick!" she said, her Irish lilt heavy as she extended one hand shake his... if he wanted to. This was the awkward part of meeting people, wasn't it?

He smiled wide, she had put her hand out to shake, and that was a step in the right direction. He grabbed the girl’s hand and shook it. He was trying to make sure that he didn’t grip her too hard or too light. He took note that she had a cat, he wondered if he took it with her to school. “Do you take her to school with you?” he didn’t have any animals. He was seriously considering getting an Owl for the term, he’d love to take a dog with him but that obviously wasn’t allowed.

She wanted to borrow his book? He was amazed not many of his friends would want to do that. “Sure, I’ll bring it to Hogwarts, we could meet up sometime and I could give it to you.” He shrugged hoping she would realize that he totally didn’t mind sharing books. He seriously liked having someone who loved books as much as he did to talk to.

Giving his hand a quick shake in return she pulled the book back up to cover her face a bit more. "I do. She's pretty well behaved except for when there's pygmy puffs round." That remark caused her to grimace ever so slightly. Given the conversation she had had with Max and her failed attempt at getting him to adopt... it was all still pretty raw, tbh.

Now this... THIS made her pull the book down finally and close it gently. "Really? You'd do that? I could bring you some of mine to borrow, too!" It was like they were friends now. Was that a thing? "Perhaps we coul' start a book exchange even. Get some other people involved?" The mere thought of this made her smile wider, excitement evident in her eyes.

English....English....English....sigh. Okay, yes. Sure. Dizzy was now living in London for the foreseeable future so she could attend Hogwarts with her nieces because....well, she couldn't attend Beauxbatons anymore. And, fine, she accepted that she was going to be speaking, and reading, and writing a whole lot in English, but it wasn't her primary language. Those were Dutch and Icelandic.

Wait, can you even have two primary languages? Afterall, she grew up speaking Icelandic at home and with her mother, and Dutch everywhere else, so both counted right?

Anyway, the point was, why couldn't she find any book in either of those languages!? It was frustrating. And just because she was here, and speaking and writing and reading in English for school, doesn't mean she wanted to read only in a second language until she graduated. They had to have some foreign language books somewhere, right?

Dizzy left this aisle and moved to the next. English, English, English, nothing but English. "Why is every book here written in English!" A soft, kittenish mew answered from the messenger bag at her side. "That was rhetorical, Solstice."

Another summer, even more surprises. Both good and not-so-good, although if she was honest with herself, she did understand why things were changing. New babies meant a lot of responsibility, and Stasya didn’t blame certain professors one bit for taking that seriously. Especially since she knew from experience that being around was infinitely better than the alternative. It still hurt sometimes, knowing that however much her papa loved her and Demyan, and probably her mama too, it wasn’t enough to stay. The tall fifteen-year-old blonde probably wouldn’t get over that any time soon, even if she privately had decided she was making it a mission to find someone who appreciated how amazing her mama was. But that mission was on hold, simply because there were school supplies to get and friends to meet or even to make.

She also had made a decision to be the best prefect she could be. No matter how much other things affected her, but there wasn’t much prefecting to do over the summer. Instead, she’d stopped off at the bookshop to replace the textbooks that had gotten a little singed last term during DADA, along with looking to see if there were any new creature-related books that had come in that looked interesting.

The textbooks had been easy enough to locate, as had the others. After five summers of roaming the bookshop, she figured she knew where most everything was as long as it didn’t get moved around any and so far it looked like at least this shop hadn’t changed much. At least she didn’t think it had, but as she’d turned another corner and heard a girl’s voice from the other side of the shelving along with a soft mew, she took another few steps to peek around the shelves. “What’re you looking for?,” she asked, curiosity at the forefront along with maybe a bit of her Gryffindor recklessness. Insofar as she was approaching a stranger without really introducing herself. But mostly, she was being helpful, or hopefully trying to be.

Dizzy looked up from her bag, open just enough that Solstice, her new black kitten familiar could peek out slightly, but not enough he could escape, and assessed the older teen a moment. She looked old enough to, at the very least, have a summer job or something, so maybe....? "Do you work here?" Because that would be super helpful!

"Do you have any books in Dutch? Or Icelandic? Icelandic works too." She paused looking back at the shelves. "Oh, but not like language learning books or anything. Just Fiction books in Dutch or Icelandic?" Dizzy wasn't all that hopeful, given how few people in the world over all spoke either language. No, she'd likely have to owl her papa or her sister to send her books in Dutch or Icelandic respectively. But, hey, didn't hurt to ask.

Ah the familiar smell of books.

That was Septimus’ first thought as he entered the shop. The other was that it was a good thing he didn’t mind the smell since Flourish and Blotts was going to always be a spot he needed to visit each and every summer. There were ALWAYs new textbooks to pick up for the upcoming school year. That and the two kitties that owned the store almost as much as the shopkeeper did, like the one currently weaving amongst his feet.

The newly minted third year reached down to pet the cat, not sure which one it was, before walking further into the book shop. Taking out his school supply list, two books stood out as new needs. Book of Spells, Grade 3 of course, and Intermediate Transfiguration. They’d be his first targets, his gaze flickering around to find the right shelves he needed to find each volume.

Bookstores always made Ellie think of home. During the summer, she and her best friend used to ride their bikes over to the bookstore and each grab a book off of their summer reading list. The two would then go to the in-house coffee shop, buy a fruit smoothie, skim the book, and talk about the details back and forth. This was the way that they worked through the entire list in a week, neglecting to answer the questions until later out of laziness. Of course, this shortcut ended up being more work for Ellie later since it turned out that the book questions were actually pretty detailed and that her friend was awful at explaining things. Also, she was pretty sure that all of those sugary smoothies on a hot day gave them what Ellie affectionately called sugar poisoning. Which her mom later said didn't exist. But she knew. She knew that the tradition after this of them laying on her couch and trying not to die while watching movies was caused by the poisoning of their body through means of sugar.

As she walked through the isles, she twirled a strand of her brunette hair around her index finger absentmindedly, wondering what her best friend was doing right now. Probably putting off her break time reading by watching horror movies in her living room with their group of friends or buying candy at the local convenience store. All without her. It made Ellie kind of jealous, though she reminded herself that she was going on WAY COOLER adventures than them.

At least that thought made her feel a little bit better, even if it was only a little bit.

With that being said, she probably needed to stop zoning out and actually get something done. Reaching into the back pocket of her black capris, Ellie pulled out the handwritten note of the books she needed for school. She didn't need to rush, but it wasn't going to be good if she came home after a full day in Diagon Alley emptyhanded.

Well, the soft noise she’d heard now had a face to go with it. Stasya had first noted the little black kitten as it had peeked out of the younger girl’s bag, and nearly asked about it when she’d instead been faced with a question. One that was actually pretty awkward, in a weird way, as she had to spend a moment trying to decide just how to answer. “Oh! No, I don’t but I’ve been here a lot so I thought maybe I could help?,” she finally responded, feeling like maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to work on her prefect skills over the summer. Even if she still felt a bit like she’d failed at that during the attack at school last term. She guessed the other girl probably didn’t need to know that.

Plus, there was another distraction as the other girl had kept speaking, and she focused on one word in the whole series of questions. Icelandic. It was exciting, really, and she guessed Professor Baldvinsson might be excited over the idea when school started again. If he was coming back. It was just now occurring to the tall blonde that there hadn’t been any announcement about professors leaving during the feast at the end of last term, and that if she already knew about one professor, maybe there would be a whole group of new professors next term…

Talar ţú íslensku?,” she asked nearly without realizing it, before letting herself think. “I know they have books in other languages. Did you look upstairs?” As far as she knew, that was where the fiction books were, anyway, and she hadn’t known of any books that weren’t here in the shop. Either that or maybe she could ask if they could get them?

Oh. Well, it wasn't like Dizzy was going to turn down help just because the girl didn't work here. She understood very well about being in book stores so often you knew it better than those that worked there. Dizzy, herself, was an expert on finding anything and everything in her favorite book store in Amsterdam. It was a small shop, converted from the bottom two floors of a canal house, but it was positively stacked with books, til it was like being in a maze.

"Thanks. I could use the help." She replaced one of the books she'd still been holding on to and....

"Já," she replied in Icelandic on instinct more than choice at first. "Talar ţú líka?"* But, no. Dizzy was supposed to be practicing her English. Although she was fluent, she still wasn't overly comfortable speaking it yet. So, practice.

"Yes, but I didn't find any up there..." Well, that wasn't exactly true. "Er...I started looking up there, but, well..." Dizzy leaned forward and lowered her voice, "There's a guy up there that smells really bad. REALLY bad! So I came down here to look instead." She had managed to look through about an eighth of the shelves up there before she fled, though.

* Talar ţú líka? = You speak it too?

There was always the option of going to find the shopkeeper to ask for help. Stasya was aware of that, and the ironic part of it all was that she probably would have thought of that first had she been anything other than a Gryffindor. Instead, she’d just plowed ahead with her idea of helping on her own, but she wasn’t lying to herself that she knew a lot about what was inside the shop either. It was just that, honestly, she knew more about the creature-related books and obviously her schoolbooks. The main foray into fiction she’d ever really read was faerie tales, which had led to her Halloween costume of the year before. Of course, those usually were either Scandinavian or Russian, but she was getting a feeling that wasn’t exactly what the younger girl was looking for.

“Course,” she’d replied, almost unaware that she’d switched back to English entirely even as she wondered if she spoke Icelandic with a Cornish accent had flitted through her head. Professor Baldvinsson hadn’t mentioned it, and the girl hadn’t seemed to notice anything either… It was just one of those intriguing thoughts, as she’d also noted the tiny little lie that had been said as the younger girl had backpedaled in her explanation. A soft giggle slipped out at the confession, however. We might have to brave it if you want to find the books though,” she whispered back, leaning over to add to the feeling of secrecy even though she doubted anyone was listening in to their conversation. “It’s pretty much only nonfiction stuff down here.”

Dizzy winced, wanting desperately to ask if they had to go back up there to get to the fiction. Which as questions go, was a relatively stupid and pointless one, so she didn't. She simply nodded instead, and followed along after the girl, whose name was....They actually hadn't introduced each other. "I'm Alfdis," she said, figuring she'd use her given name first, since the girl was icelandic (why else would you learn Icelandic given it was only spoken in a country of 400,000 in 2090?), "but I go by Dizzy."

As they reached the stairs and started to climb, Dizzy took a deep breath and held it. Then realized she had more she was curious to know about the girl and let the breath out before they'd even reached the second floor. "Do you go to Hogwarts?"

Thankfully, the air was pretty much clear here, by the stairs. For now at least, but if that guy was still up here... "Um, where do we start looking?"

The wince hadn’t gone unnoticed. Nor had Stasya felt the need to point it out, as she had honestly taken the younger girl’s warning to heart. It just wasn’t like she could really do much about it since she still couldn’t do magic outside of school legally. There was a little over a year before then. A year and about three months, to be exact, but if she had been able to, she would’ve said they could either try to summon the books or just cast bubblehead charms on themselves so the alleged stinky man wouldn’t be a problem. Besides, if they were lucky, he wouldn’t be near the shelves they needed to look at. Hopefully. There wasn’t anything else she could really do, so she’d started walking up the stairs when she heard the girl speak again. “Well, it’s nice to meet you Dizzy,” she said with a smile. “I’m Anastasiya, although most people call me Stasya.” Some variation of that, anyway.

“I do,” she confirmed, as they’d continued heading to the second floor. “I’ll be a fifth year this term.” She didn’t think she needed to add the prefect part, or the Gryffindor part. Especially since she’d just met the other girl and she didn’t know if it would scare her. Besides, it would be obvious soon enough.

Plus, so far she didn’t smell anything. Either the guy had left or hadn’t really been there. She was willing to give the benefit of the doubt, but she’d stay vigilant too. “Mm, I think this way,” she said, turning to the left and starting to head toward a row of shelves. She really hoped they wouldn’t need bubblehead charms.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Daisy was casually browsing the bookshelves. She was having a bit of a tough time deciding which non-school books she was going to purchase. It seemed like she was a bit spoilt for choice. "Achievements in Charming", "Enchantment in Baking", "The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection by Quentin Trimble" and "The Healer's Helpmate" were the titles that Daisy desired.

Her eyes scanned the shelves for the books as she wondered if any of her friends were going to bump into her.

There wasn't going to be THAT many books that she'd need for her OWL year, right? Bel had a ton of second hand ones already given she had two older siblings, but neither of them had done OWLs at Hogwarts. Or OWLs at all, actually, given they had both done their fifth years back home in 'stralia. That meant that the required reading list didn't always quite overlap. Annoying.

She was only here today to check over the list and write the prices down so her parents could go ahead and see if they could find the books cheaper somewhere else, and Bel intended to do that as quick as she could so she could spend the rest of her time shopping somewhere a bit more her speed.

Probably QQS if she was being honest with herself.

Except, there was a welcome distraction!

"G'day Daisy!" Bel bounded up to her dormmate of the past couple years. Teammate too of course. Bel hoped that would continue to be the case this year. She knew Daisy had had a tough go of it the previous year, but being on the team was good for her, right? "How's ya summer going?"

The Healers at St Mungo's couldn't fix my left leg entirely hence the limp. My aunt, Helena is currently staying over with mum and me. I believe she is doing some shopping of her own."

She paused and asked, "How have you been?"
