She raised her wand, and "Wormtail" inadvertently took a step back. Which was, of course, of no real use, since all that he could achieve by putting distance between himself and her wand was.... nothing.

Jenna White rolled her eyes at his action, lowering the wand. “Stop it, Wormtail. You know I’m not going to hurt you.”

Peter Pettigrew hesitated. Behind him, the wall stretched like a never-ending boulder – He could not even back away, now. “I can’t kill,” he said, his voice squeaky. “He – he knows it. The Dark Lord knows it. I’m –”

“– too much of a scared-y pants,” Jenna completed the sentence for him. “Wormtail – oh for, God’s sake, get a grip. Stop shivering!”

As if pulled taut by an invisible string, Wormtail's frame stopped trembling at once. His face was still pale, though and, inwardly, he was still aquiver. How could he have even thought he could get away with this? When the Dark Lord told you to kill, you killed.

He had, indeed, been foolish to think that he could only pretend he had killed Roger Mason - and get away with it.

Wormtail was in trouble --- and Wormtail knew it.

He could only thank his stars that it was Jenna White who was speaking to him. right now; Jenna who had found out his treachery, and not the Dark Lord himself.

Treachery. He shivered again, just thinking of the word. That, indeed, the Dark Lord punished most severely.

“You can’t have been naïve enough to think you could get away with not killing him,” Jenna was saying, now. Peter forced himself to look up at her. Her wide, silver eyes were boring into his mind. He tried to shut it out, all the memories, then looked away.

“What do you want to know?” he asked feebly.

“What did you do with Mason?” she said, at once.

“You could figure it out without my telling you.”

“Yeah. I could also use poison and the Cruciatus Curse to make you spill.”

Wormtail shivered again - it was no use, beating about the bush. “I wiped his memory clean.”

Jenna swore under her breath. The idiot. He had been told to kill Roger Mason, not – not this. Wiped Mason’s memory clean? Of course, she had expected something of this sort from him. Before morning, the Ministry would know something was wrong with Mason and, knowing Peter’s feeble memory charms, before morning they would have figured out what had happened to the Unspeakable, too.

“Wormtail, you’re an idiot,” she said, slapping her forehead in frustration. “Can you imagine what you’ve done? By tomorrow, the Ministry will find him. And they know plenty enough methods to get him to recover his memory or, at least, to make him remember who modified it. And all the knowledge he has - when the Dark Lord finds out -”

“Don’t tell him!” Peter squealed, throwing himself at her feet.

Jenna took a step back, clearly exasperated. “Don’t try that stunt on me, Wormtail, it won’t get you anywhere. Here’s the deal: I’m giving you two hours. Two hours, and that’s it. Go kill Mason. And if you don’t – I’ll tell the Dark Lord.”

“No!” Peter squealed. “No, please, Jenna – he –”

“I’m not telling him, Wormtail. Not if you kill Mason within these two hours.” She backed away another step, as he attempted once more to get hold of her feet, then shrugged. “If, for whatever reason, you don’t, I’ll do the job myself. But it’s not going to be good for you. Now get up. Please.”

Peter got to his feet, still a little shaky. “You won’t tell? Please?”

There was something so wretched about his tone, Jenna felt almost sorry. Almost, but not quite. Foolish kid… He wasn’t meant for the Dark Arts, but here he was. A traitor.

- A traitor to every side that did not seem the winning side.

Almost with an effort, she nodded. “No, Peter, I won’t tell. Not if you can kill Mason in the next two hours.”

No dying on me! These crazy ol' readers are rubbing off on you! About time someone with some sanity [*cough*] set you straight again.

“You called, Victoria?”

Andra Castle’s voice was stiff as she spoke, but Victoria Glade did not rise even half an inch from her seat. Sitting there, on the velvet sofa, she looked regal enough to throw you into a curtsey - though Andra’s eyes held nothing but a grudging sort of respect.

“What is this I hear, Andraviona? You have not yet bought your dress for the ball?”

Andraviona. Andra flinched. No one called her that, absolutely no one. Not since she had turned fifteen, and told everyone off for calling her something so complicated.

The only exception was, had always been, Victoria.

Victoria - Victoria, whose wealth rivalled her fame - Victoria, whose manner of carriage spoke as much of luxury, as of elegance - - Victoria, whom Andra could not help hating.

“That is my business,” she said dryly.

“You shall bring down the Castles’ name yet, Andraviona,” Victoria said calmly.

The calculated calm, the silent venom. Andra hated it, loathed it. - - Victoria Glade may be one of the most respected and feared names in the elite Wizarding class, and Victoria Glade may be her mother’s best friend, but that did not mean Andra felt any reverence towards her. She accepted the fact that, at fifty years of age, the woman’s hair was blacker than Andra’s own, and her number of suitors larger – but, despite it, or because of it, she hated Victoria.

“The Castles’ name is more my problem than yours, Victoria,” Andra said, flaring. “It is my family, and your connection to it is limited to –”

Victoria raised a hand to stifle what seemed like a small yawn. Andra felt like her frame was on fire.

“Barely a week to go to the ball, and you have not yet selected a dress,” Victoria said, smoothing out the non-existent creases in the black gown that stretched to the very tips of her toes. “The hostess has not yet selected a dress. I wonder if Alva knows –”

“Mum is fully aware –”

“– how much of a disappointment you are turning out to be, Andra.”

Andra stomped one foot on the ground. “I was going to buy it today, alright? In fact, I was just going over to the Blacks. Cissy and I –”

Victoria’s face was incredulous.

“Cissy and I? Cissy? Cissy as in, Narcissa Black?”

For the first time, Andra looked somewhat sheepish, almost like a child caught red-handed in an act of mischief. It was a mark of the depth of her dislike of Victoria Glade that she actually chose to support Narcissa.

“Yes. Narcissa and I –”

“Don’t be foolish, Andra,” Victoria cut across. “You know very well how old the enmity between your family and the Blacks is: I am fully aware of your dislike for Narcissa Black. It is no use pretending, the way you pretend in front of people to be – what is the term? –”

“– Best friends,” Andra supplied, with a kind of vindictive pleasure.

“Yes. Best friends,” Victoria repeated. “Best friends with that blonde-haired fool. Come, we will get your dress at once. It would be humiliating if that little cheek was to find out that you, despite being the hostess of a Castle ball – the prestige of prestige – have not yet gotten yourself a gown for the occasion.”

For a moment, Andra thought of resisting. But Victoria had already gotten up and, once Victoria got up, you could not turn her down. Grudgingly, she nodded.

“Yes, Victoria.”

Someone more arrogant and power-hungry (with elite-status, anyway) than the Blacks? Holy smokes! Creepy much? I'm not sure what role Cissa will play or how you're going to portray the house of Black but, I love your writing Maxie. It goes without saying that you definitely have your way with words. You could be yapping about stinkin' manure and still make it sound lovely. Funky comparison but you catch my drift.

Anyway, I can't wait to see what else you'll throw at us! Until then, I'll be stalking!

That request [yes, it's a request =p] comes with an explanation. You see, when I posted my first novel-length FanFic on SS, it had those two words at the end of its first post. After that, I just adopted the style. It's what I call Maxie-FF-Fashion: FF updates always in good ole black, 'Please comment' always written at the end of the first post of FF like this.

Bottom line: It's become a habit, now.
