Well, I'm Caitlin. This is my millionth fan fiction but I think it's got a great start.

The Flavor of the Week is a novel focused on Lily Evans’ final year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She’s thrown into a hazy mess of battling wars with her grades, responsibilities with being a Head Girl, and a blossoming romance that she’s not even sure she’s ready for. Finally, when she thinks she’s gotten things figured out, everything turns for the worst. Follow Lily through a rushing path of fear, happiness, anger, hate, frustration, and even love.






There were three things my mother had always told me as I was growing up: live a life full of laughter, love with all of my heart, and read non-stop. In fact, that was me. I wasn’t the type for love but I definitely had my laughs and I cherished reading.

I loved my life, but as I sat under an umbrella to shield myself from the bristling sun, I couldn’t help wondering if I wanted more. More what? I thought semi-consciously. Before I could ponder the case any farther, a girl pulled a seat up next to me. My train of thought evaporated as the stuck her pinkie finger in my ice cream.

“Hey,” I laughed, throwing a napkin at her. “Get your own.”

“Yeah, with what money?” she rolled her eyes and ate, despite my protests.

Deciding that I wasn’t that hungry anyway, I tried to continue to read (though my previous attempts were useless due to my wandering train of thought.) This time proved the same.

“What’re you reading?”

“Toadstool Tales, by Beatrix Bloxam.”

“Okay, let me rephrase that,” Marie sighed, tucking a long strand of her black hair behind her ear. “Why are you reading? It’s the last day of your vacation and your senior year is coming up. Do you know how many guys are here? Come on, live a little!”

“Uh!” I replied in disgust. “I live just fine, thanks.”

“Hey, Evans! EVANS!” a boy called from across the street. He jogged over, shaking his messy black hair around pointlessly. “What’s that you’ve got your nose buried in? It’s the last day before school starts and you’re already trying to read the whole booklist?”

“Thank you!” Marie grinned, happy that someone else was trying to make the same point clear.

“Shove off, Potter.” I replied, not taking my eyes away from the book.

“I will if you’ll go out with me.”

“Oh, yes, real romantic.” I snapped the novel shut. “You come over, not bothering to acknowledge the fact that I have a first name, insult my habits, and then ask me to date you when in fact, your girlfriend is with Sirius Black in the Three Broomsticks. How persuading.”

With that said, I rolled my eyes and stormed down the street, Marie reluctantly trailing at my heels.

“Wait, Lily, just wait!” Marie called, gasping for breath. “He was just-”

I wheeled around, fire burning in my eyes. “Don’t you dare stand up for him. You know just as well as I that he’s an arrogant little brat with too much money and not enough brains.”

“Maybe he’s changed. I think he really does like you. That’s what, the millionth time he’s asked you out?”

“Yes, and could he be any more insensitive with it?” I questioned, leading the way into The Leaky Cauldron. “What does he just expect me to do, just fall at his feet? Well I won’t; I’m not like every other girl, nor do I intend to be.”

After entering the room I was staying in, I barely let Marie in before I slammed the door.

We reached the train station early the next morning; I fully intended on getting a good compartment and I needed to be prepared for the Prefect’s meeting anyway.

“’As Head Girl it’s my sole responsibility’… blah blah blah, I get it. I’ll get a seat but you owe me,” Marie groaned, not bothering to quote my words without sarcasm.

I approached the front of the train where a few new faces sat, glancing at each other nervously. “Hello, I’m Lily Evans, Head Girl, and as soon as everyone arrives we’ll begin the meeting. Don’t be so anxious… and the food on the trolley in the corner is free; help yourself.”

After taking a seat, I waited patiently, until Avery finally entered the room.

“Well, let’s get started then,” I grinned. “As a few of you already know, I’m Lily Evans, Head Girl and I’m in Gryffindor.”

“Avery, Head Boy, Slytherin.” Avery said softly, his words ringing. How he’d ever made Prefect, much less Head Boy, was a concept even I couldn’t grasp. Avery slumped in a chair and let me control the meeting.

“Well then,” I said, taken aback by his behavior. “Your duties are pretty simple. It’s your job to make sure that students stay in line; you are allowed to confiscate items and if you believe that points should be taken from a house simply address the Head of House in writing. It is also your responsibility to take shifts to guard the halls at night and help decorate the Great Hall before the holidays. I’ve made a list here-” I handed one out to each student “-of who should watch the corridors of the train at certain times. If I find out that you are slacking, you will be punished and continual neglect in your duties will result in your badge being taken away. Thanks so much, and good luck.”

I watched them file out and then turned to Avery. “You could’ve helped out some, you know.”

“I don’t help Mudbloods, and you seemed to have handled it.” He left, leaving me staring at him open-mouthed.

Once I’d regained myself, I went to find Marie. It was a pointless search; though we’d always talked of getting a good compartment we sat in the same one every time. We had our reasons.

“Hey,” I said, sitting across from her. “Something wrong?”

She rolled over on her side and rested her chin on her hand. “No, just thinking.”

“About?”

“Sirius Black.”

The door slid open. “Did I hear my name?”

Marie giggled. “Maybe.”

Sirius smiled the turned to look at me. “Quick warning- James is on his way for his regular check.”

I rolled my eyes, sighed, and lifted up the seat I was sitting on. None of the other seats did that, but like I said, our compartment had its benefits. In my third year I’d hollowed out the base to the seat then placed an engorgement charm on it to make a nifty hading place. I climbed in, looked at the two of them, and said, “After four years you think he would’ve figured it out by now.” I closed the lid just as James entered.

“Any of you seen Evans?”

“No, for the bazillionth time.”

“How is she never here?” he asked, exasperated. “I’ve checked the front and I don’t know how she manages to just appear halfway during the train ride.”

“Maybe it’s magic,” Marie laughed.

“Not funny. Where is she?”

“Wow, feeling a bit like a stalker, Prongs?” Sirius asked, raising his eyebrows.

James glared at him. “Shut up.”

“Shouldn’t you be with your girlfriend, anyway?” Marie questioned next, her voice dripping with disgust.

“For your information,” he said through gritted teeth, “I broke up with her.”

“Surprise, surprise there,” Marie replied sarcastically. “How long did it last, a week?”

“Come on, Padfoot, let’s get out of here.”

“I think I’ll catch up with you later,” he said, and James left.

I came out. “See what I mean? A week. He’s not for me.”

“Then who is?” Marie questioned, her voice soft.

“I guess no one,” I sighed, and began to read again.

When we reached Hogwarts I stepped off the train, almost relieved to feel the wind on my face. Though it’d been bright and sunny earlier, the night was cold and breezy.

“Just follow my lead,” I instructed to the new group of Prefects. I pulled out the stairs at the foot of one of the doors, waved at them to do the same, then yelled, “Come on, time to get off! Watch your step now… hold on to the rail!”

When the others were doing the same, I wrapped my jacket closer around me and headed toward one of the “horseless” carriages, still relieved that I couldn’t see what really pulled them. Marie joined me and we were shortly on our way to the castle.

It was nice to step into the cozy Entrance Hall and even better to sit at the all-to-familiar Gryffindor Table. I wave of sadness rushed by as I realized how life would be without Hogwarts. I pushed the thought into the back of my mind and concentrated on the new First Years who were filing in. Professor Dumbledore came out with the three-legged stool and placed the ratty old Sorting Hat on it.

He brushed his long silvery beard out of the was of his pockets and pulled out a scroll, then waited patiently for the Hat to begin it’s start-of-the-term song.

For hundreds of years I’ve sang many songs
Delivering a message to you
And now that we are gathered here
It’s time to say something new
Difficult times approach us all
It may not seem so sane
But many lives will leave us all
Under someone’s horrible reign
No matter what house you go to
Remember my sayings’ tell
And when the times approach us all
Stay together well
In Gryffindor you’ve got
The brave and strong
Willing to fight to the death
And punish all who are wrong
In Ravenclaw the witty lay
Their brains and their charm
And when a puzzle will arrive
You can lean on their outstretched arm
The Hufflepuff are another story
They’re brave, smart, and loyal
And as a mix of all the houses
They’re not afraid to toil
Slytherin is my final tale
Of those witty and cunning
Though mischievous by glance
Their personalities are stunning
Stick together like parchment and glue
Don’t argue about the has-been
If you’ve listened well, I’ll dismiss you
Let Hogwart’s sorting begin

I looked at Marie, and her puzzled face reflected mine. The kids were sorted and Dippet made his speech, but my hearing only went in and out. What had the Hat meant? Did we really have anything to worry about?

Finally, when the long list of banned items was recited, the feast began. I piled my plate with food, took a bite of chicken, and then turned once again to Marie. “An idea what that was about?”

“Nope…” she replied through a mouthful of bread.

“Wow, you guys have the best manners,” Remus Lupin laughed. “I think you’re worse than James.”

I shook my head. “Impossible.”

We finished eating, and I decided that trying to pursue the conversation when I was so tired was pointless. After giving the Prefects the password and telling them what to do, I took a few shortcuts to my Common Room, climbed up the stairs, and sunk into bed. I was asleep before my head hit the pillow.

The next morning I slept a little later than I should have, but I reached the Great Hall in time to grab some toast and be handed my schedule.

“Double potions?” Marie groaned.

I grinned. Potions was once class that I loved… Professor Slughorn normally always gave out some kind of a prize at the end of the day, and I was the apt receiver for them. Potions were my good spot.

I grabbed my bag, another piece of bread, and led the way down to the dungeons. Professor Slughorn smiled at me then closed the door. I walked to my table, set down my bag, unloaded my cauldron, and waited for class to begin.

“All right, all right, settle down class,” Slughorn said, sweeping to the front of the room. “For the next two weeks we shall review what we learned last year… However, I won’t be like the other teachers and go over how difficult this class will be, since it’s your N.E.W.T. year, because I’m sure that you already know. The instructions are on the board and the required items are across the room. Begin.”

I squinted at the board to read the title Polyjuice Potion. After that, I didn’t need the instructions. I worked heavily and quickly, my mind in the potion, until the bell rang.

“Excellent, excellent everyone! It seems as if Miss Evans has gotten the farthest again! I suppose the summer didn’t faze you any, no?” he smiled, humor in every word. “Very well, then! Fifteen points to Gryffindor! You are dismissed.”

We walked out of the room and I split paths with Marie; she had a free class and I had Muggle Studies. I’d almost decided to drop the class, but since I wanted to be an Auror I figured that it was good to know the wizard’s view on Muggles, too. My whole family was made up of them, of course, but to find that they were threatened unknowingly with games such as “Muggle Hunting” was just a bit scary.

Professor Grengat slammed the door and automatically began to talk, her voice filling the classroom with an instant sleepiness. “As you all know, this is you N.E.W.T. year. I expect the highest mark from all of you and serious study… your whole future depends on this grade and no matter how well you did in the past, if you fail this class every employer will take it into consideration. Now, open your books to page five-hundred and eighteen, read the highlighted section, and do the review questions on the opposite page.”

Though it was annoying boring work, I’d fully consumed myself into it when a note popped me in the head.

“Ouch!” I whispered, and picked the wiggling note up of the floor where it’d fallen. I opened it hurriedly, hoping not to draw any extra attention to myself.

It’s bad enough me having to put up with you in every class I have, much less out side of school. I completely decline.
