Excellent chapter! I love how she can get one over on Malfoy even when she's really upset.

Chapter 10
The Confusion

“Great job, everyone. If we keep playing like that, we’ll get the Cup for sure this year.” Bryony told us as soon as we were in the prepping tent to the side of the pitch. We all stopped and either stood or sat on the benches, looking up towards our captain expectantly. She just looked back at us silently, seeming rather calm with a smile lighting up her heart-shaped, bronzed face.

“Ok,” she finally sighed and started into her routine corrections, her words running quicker together. “Dalson, pick up the speed next time. We wouldn’t have gotten that last point scored against us if you were leaning down more on the broom. James, when you swing don’t smash it with your elbow stuck out and your bludger into your body. Shift over to the side and extend; that way you don’t get your elbow shattered by a possibly roving bludger and it doesn’t make your arm tired faster...”

I tuned out the rest of her rants about what we could do to improve for next time. I perked up when I heard my name mentioned, though. “And Black... nothing yet. Keep it up. Again good game, we’re practicing next Friday evening at 7pm, don’t forget. Unless you’re dying in the hospital wing, I expect to see you all there.”

We all got up and walked out of the tent. Everyone else was chattering away to each other as we made our way to the broom storage around the corner. After I stowed away my broom, I lagged behind everyone, not in the mood to socialize. I wasn’t entirely sure why I felt so antisocial, let alone a bit down. We won for Merlin’s sake! Why can’t I be happy about it?

“Hey. Rosa!”

I stopped and turned around. Harry was jogging towards me. There were very few people coming now since the floodgates for spectators were opened a good 20 minutes ago. I managed a smile and waited for him to catch up to me. When he did, we continued walking away from the pitch at a bit of a slower pace.

“Great game. That last goal was well-done,” he complimented once he caught his breath.

“Thanks,” I responded.

This was probably the only moment in Hogwarts History that a Gryffindor complimented a Slytherin... ever. It had been a month since Harry showed me the kitchen and he felt hurt – for some reason I don’t understand – that I never told him I knew Draco Malfoy from before I got on the Hogwarts Express. It took him about 2 weeks to come around a bit more and finally things were back to normal, if not growing stronger. If that was possible that is; I really hated to think that was true.

“Have you ever tried being a Seeker?”

The question caught me off-guard. “I know you enjoy your position on your team, Harry, but that doesn’t mean I...”

“No, no...” he cut in. “I know Sirius was never into playing Quidditch on the house team, but his brother was, apparently.”

I turned to look at him, surprised. My father was a Quidditch player?

“It’s kind of weird to bring up, especially considering family history with Sirius and... the rest of the Blacks,” Harry continued.

He nailed that one spot on.

“But I just wondered if you ever considered that playing Quidditch is something in your blood and, considering someone close-in-blood was on the house team as a Seeker...”

“Regulus Black was a seeker?” I cut in, my voice still surprised.

“Yeah. You should ask Professor Slughorn about it; he’s the one with the pictures from when he was Head of House.”

“Huh.” I tried not to show too much interest in the matter in fear Harry might get suspicious. Now the thought badgered my mind; Quidditch? My dad? Really? Why is it I suck at seeking so much I once had a snitch knock me out, yet I’m an all-star in scoring?

“Anyways, I just thought of that while watching the match.” Harry blinked and shook his head. He stopped suddenly. I stopped a few steps ahead of him and turned around.

“What’s up?” I asked, shoving my hands into my pockets. The wind was rather brutal right now; it was freezing outside. At least it stopped snowing for this one day.

“You know about that dance in December? The one for right before we leave for the holidays?”

That explains everything! I wondered why I’ve been getting weekly requests from Draco to be his date since the flyers went up in mid-October. I forgot all about it. I resisted the urge to roll my eyes.

“Yes. What about it?”

“Are you... planning on... going?” he asked, struggling on his words.
Dear Merlin, was he trying to ask me to go with him? He is a nice enough kid – a little slow at times but manageable nonetheless – but to go out on a date with him?

“I got roped into it by Aurelia,” I responded.

“So you have a date?” his face fell slightly. I felt an odd sensation in my chest when I looked back at him, like something was being pulled every which way.

“If you consider a friend who is a girl to be a date, then yes.”

Honestly, Aurelia was asked to go by Goyle of all people. She was literally leaping for joy when he left the room, going on about how a guy finally asked her to go out with her and how it was her first time ever... considering how she was acting then, I couldn’t blame any guy for not approaching her in that way. I was currently dateless, but she was still determined to make me go. She’s actually been pursuing various Slytherins about it.

Maybe that’s why Draco’s been more insistent about being my date as of the past 2 weeks... she just had to blow it for me!

“Have you considering going with a guy?” Harry pressed, a hint of hope in his question.

I was softening. I couldn’t believe it; I told mum this would happen but she made me come to Hogwarts anyways! There’s no other explanation as to why I responded...

“I can save you a dance.”

Then again, I do tend to get word vomit. Maybe that was it. That must be it.
Harry’s face lit up like a Christmas tree. “I’ll hold you to that.”

“Ok.” I smiled back at him, trying to appear as though I thought it was as great an idea as he seemed to think it was.

“Hey! Harry!”

Harry looked past me. I turned to see who was calling him. It was one of his golden trio followers, the know-it-all. She hurried down the slight slope, skidding to a stop past me and landing in front of Harry.

“What took you so long? People have been looking for you,” she snapped.

“I apologize; I’ll reorganize my priorities straight away,” he responded sarcastically. He seemed to find it amusing when Granger turned beet red in response. “I’m kidding, Mione – what’s wrong?”

“Nothing, we’ve just been looking for you. You just disappeared after the match after all. Now come on.” She grabbed Harry by the arm and turned around. She looked at me, nodded curtly with an equivalently brusque, “Hello.” She dragged Harry away and towards the castle.

Chuckling to myself, I continued up the slope until I was in the castle. I shook off the bottoms of my Quidditch robes and continued down the corridor. I made it to the staircase leading to the dungeons without any issues.

“Hey, Rosa!”

Of course, it just had to be ruined right at the top stair. I ignored Draco’s voice and jogged down the stairs. Even power-walking down the corridor with my stubby legs couldn’t outrun Draco by far. I only made it halfway down the hall until I felt him touch my shoulder.

I wasn’t sure what was worse, him grabbing me and turning me around by force or just putting a hand on my shoulder to get my attention in the first place. When I was turned around, I looked at his hand and then at him, my expression hard. I knew damn well he got the hint; he was just so arrogant as to believe I wouldn’t do anything about it.

“What?” I snapped.

“That was a good match,” he said, smiling.

Now I was just plain confused. There was no hint of sarcasm, irritation, or smugness in his tone. Heck, he was even smiling... legitimately! The smile reached his twinkling grey eyes.

It freaked me out.

“Who died?” I asked flatly.

His eyebrows drew together, his smile fading. “What do you mean?”

“There has to be a reason why you’re suddenly so polite. What is it? Is there a date set in stone?” My last question came out harsher than the rest.

“No, just wanted to congratulate you for a good game. That was an amazing last shot.”

“Thanks...?”

“But speaking of dates,” he started.

Here it is!

“I still hear your friend Brunes is searching for someone for you. Seeing as she’s going with Goyle, my close friend, it only seems appropriate that...”

“I find a separate date, as to not make it awkward for them,” I cut in, knocking him off his high hippogriff for a few moments. His hand finally dropped from my shoulder, at least. I smiled sweetly and said, “It’s still the same answer, Draco; no. Good luck finding a date. In fact, I know someone perfect for you...”

“Oh, Draco, it’s lovely to see you!”

Speak of the devil; Pansy Parkinson was skipping towards us. She came up to Draco’s side, turning to face me, and looped an arm through his.

“Did you enjoy the match? It was rather intense, wasn’t it? Especially right at the end, when that chaser almost slid off the front of their broom to dodge that bludger.”

“And believe me, I didn’t know anything could be more slippery than that broomstick until now,” I muttered under my breath.

Pansy finally seemed to notice me. She smiled at me, polite as can be. “Congratulations on that last shot. It would’ve been a shame for the team if you did fall and break a bone.”

My eyes narrowed on her; that insolent tone just grinded my gears. “And it’d be a shame for everyone if I broke your jawbone right now,” I stepped up to her, looking up into her beady eyes with a glare, my fists tensed. “But just because something is close to happening, it doesn’t mean it will.”

Pansy’s face reddened and she gripped her wand around her fist.

“Nothing like perfect timing...” Aurelia seemed to appear out of nowhere and she dragged me down the corridor.

I didn’t resist her, even though I really did want to take my wand and shove it in a place that will make Pansy never forget why she should learn to keep her mouth shut. I was dragged right through the portrait hole. Once it shut and we were in the green-tinted common room, I was released.

“What did they want this time?” she asked with a weary tone.

“Draco was being polite. Pansy was being herself.”

“Woah, woah... Draco being polite? What happened?” Aurelia seemed rather intrigued now.

“He congratulated me on the match... and then proceeded to do what he has done weekly since October.” I shrugged.

“Ah. Well, it’s not too far away now. He’ll stop being such a nuisance soon.”

I scoffed. The day Draco stops being a nuisance will be the day he takes his last breath.

Chapter 11
The Question

The next two weeks – the last two weeks of school before the holidays and this bloody ball - were my personal hell, having to keep Draco off my back while simultaneously keeping Parkinson at bay. I didn’t get what his problem was; practically every 7th year girl was wound around his prissy finger, why couldn’t he just ask them? Isn’t it obvious I’m a hopeless case for him?

“What’re you doing?” Aurelia asked flatly, stopping in her tracks to turn around and face me. I kept moving with her so I was crouched behind her back, rather well-hidden.

“Pretend I’m not here!” I whispered back urgently. I pulled my wand out and muttered a Disillusionment charm. I looked down at myself when I did cast it; I had definitely done better before.

“Hey, Brunes.”

I peeked around Aurelia’s arm and saw Draco sauntering closer to us, his company just a step behind. He stopped before Aurelia.

“Where’s Rosa?”

She shrugged in response. “We aren’t conjoined twins; I don’t know her every move.”

Draco glared at her suspiciously. Aurelia sighed.

“Fine, she’s by the Astronomy Tower last I heard.”

“Astronomy Tower?” Draco asked flatly. He didn’t believe a word of it. I could sense Aurelia’s panic.

“Well, not actually at the tower, near it. You know? À côté.”

Draco glared at her coldly, the corner of his mouth twitching. I smirked smugly to myself, proud Aurelia managed to use a French word I taught her. Bonus for using it against Draco.

“Whatever, when you next see her just tell her someone is looking for her.”

“Who is?” Aurelia asked blankly. I rolled my eyes, mentally chuckling. Draco just looked at her in disbelief.

“She’ll know.”

“But I want to know who I’m passing the message along for. A professor? One of the students? Who exactly?”

Growing impatient, Draco scowled and stormed off, not even noticing my badly-cast Disillusionment charm as he passed, Crabbe and Goyle hurrying to catch up. Once I saw them disappear, I released the spell and stood upright. Aurelia turned around to face me.

“Well?” she pressed.

I smiled. “Great performance. Next time say I’m taking a walk along the lake with someone else. Oh, and name the first guy that comes to mind. That’ll set him right off.”

Aurelia appeared in thought for a moment, and then burst into a fit of giggles. I couldn’t help but join her when I imagined Draco sputtering gibberish, red-faced, and storming off to find an innocent guy to thrash him for ‘being alone with me’.

“That’ll be fun. But I don’t know if I could do that...” she turned around and started walking. I pushed my feet ahead to follow next to her, starting to wander aimlessly.

“Why not?” I demanded, suddenly very irritated.

“I think I’ll accidentally blow his tongue out before he finishes asking the question ‘do you know where Rosa is?’.”

We laughed together and continued wandering down the halls, eventually joining up with Daphne Greengrass and my Quidditch captain, Bryony Montague, in our aimless amble throughout the corridors. When 6pm came, we separated once more, leaving Aurelia and me heading towards the Great Hall. I stopped right in the front doorway, getting bashed into and, as a result, shoved forwards when I stopped. I spun around and looked down at the person who ran into me; a 1st year Gryffindor.

“Watch your step,” I growled at the little boy.

The kid scrambled to his feet, his eyes practically glued to the floor along with his face as he walked past me to meet back up with his friends. I then turned to scan the Slytherin table. When I didn’t see an over-groomed, greasy, fat light-blonde head, I caught up to Aurelia and sat next to her. My eyes were constantly flickering between the dinner I ate and the open doors. I made it to my first few bites of apple pie when I saw that dreaded blonde head move into the doorway of the hall. I slid right down to my knees beneath the table, taking my plate with the pie with me.

“Rosa, what’re you...?”

“Sh!” I snapped back. “Where’s Draco now?”

I looked up at Aurelia and saw she was looking out in the direction of the doors.

“Coming this way. Taking his time, as usual. Oh, he just walked right through a group of 3rd year Ravenclaws. They don’t look pleased but Malfoy doesn’t seem to care...”

I finished it as quickly as I could and slid the plate carefully back to its place.

“He’s coming around! If he looks down he’ll see you.”

“And with that said, I bid you good day.”

I slid myself carefully beneath the bench and people’s legs, crawling just inches from their feet. My eyes were carefully watching Draco’s feet as they got closer. I stopped when they were a few steps from me and held my breath. When he passed and kept going without stopping, I continued to scuttle beneath the benches. I made it to the end, continuing to crawl alongside the table while getting a few stares from the Ravenclaws and a couple of Slytherins. I hurried to the Ravenclaw table and then continued right out of the Great Hall, now people from every table looking at me.

When I was around the corner of the Great Hall entryway, I got up to my feet and ran. I ran down the corridors, down the stairs, and straight to the portrait. As soon as I passed through, I stopped momentarily, surprised to see only one person in the common room. One person I didn’t much care for next to Draco; Pansy.

“Hello.” The brunette girl got up from her seat on the black leather couch.

“Hi.” I tried to make a quick way towards the two stairs that led up to the girls’ dorms, but Pansy moved quicker, jumping right in front of me.

“I hear you’re going to this ball. That’s rather soon now, if I recall correctly.”

2 days to be exact; I wasn’t looking forward to it. It was official I was going stag; it's pathetic. Yet no one knew, everyone thought I had some secret date.

I stopped in my attempts to get around her. “Yes, I am,” I replied curtly. “What’s it to you?”

“Who are you going with?” she pressed with a sweet tone, crossing her arms across her chest.

“Not your Dracikins,” I snapped.

“Oh don’t worry, I’m very well aware you aren’t. Everyone is. What gets me is...” She stepped to her left while I tried to step right, stopping me in my tracks once more. I told myself I would give it two more tries before I release my true colours... through my wand. At her.

“What gets me is,” she repeated. “You’ve got him wrapped around your little finger...” her head cocked to the side in a cat-like mannerism. “Yet you won’t tell him who you’re going with.”

“It’s of no importance to him whom it is I chose to go out with and who I don’t,” I replied, managing to keep my voice even and calm. I emphasized this by putting my hands on my hips, looking almost stubborn.

“Well if you’re going with a guy, clearly he isn’t Slytherin. And... well, the last person to go out with someone out-of-house in Slytherin...” she paused, seeming to think it added some special dramatic effect or something. “Didn’t end up so well.”

“Is that a threat, Parkinson?” I asked flatly.

“Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. Who’re you going with?”

“A friend.”

I turned right around and headed back to the portrait hole, but Parkinson dared to grab my arm and forcibly turn me around. I could handle the verbal assault about my potential date, but this went too far. With my other arm, I grabbed my wand and stuck it right in front of her face.

“Let. Go,” I snarled.

Parkinson’s eyes contested mine, glimmering with a hard determination. With a growl, a white light illuminated from the tip of my wand, causing Pansy to go flying backwards and into the castle wall. She slid to the ground, gasping for air as the wind was knocked out of her from the thud. I smiled to myself, proud at my work.

“I’m going. With. A friend,” I said simply. I crossed the room, passing Pansy’s twitching, gasping form to go up to the dormitories and into my room, locking the door behind me.

HUGE quote! I loved the whole chapter but that last bit was what I've been waiting for! Pansy got what she deserves
I hope that's not the end of it though, they're far too good as sparing partners!

Brilliant! I really love this story!

Lol - there's quite more about Rosa/Pansy 'love' is to come. It gets more intense (and... explosive ) than that, I can promise! That's definitely not the last of it.

1. Dresses:
Rosa's Dress
Aurelia’s Dress
(... I over-enjoy ‘dress shopping’).
2. “fringe” = bangs in British English.
3. I didn’t want to include real songs into this fan fiction... but I always imagined the song Everything by Lifehouse in the slow dance at the end of this chapter.

Chapter 12
The Ball

It was December 19th already; I couldn’t believe it. It was the last day of classes before the Christmas holidays. And, worst of all, it was the ball tonight. I pulled out my dress robes from my closet for the first time since putting it there September 1st upon unpacking. Finding, to my own surprise and glee, it was just a bit too big , I managed to use magic to bring it in.

“How’d you do that?” Aurelia asked in awe as she watched the dress bring itself in.

“A couple of spells. Do you need it done to?”

“Does that work for bringing out the dress?”

I turned around and looked at Aurelia. She was wearing a strapless platinum-coloured dress that cut to two inches below her knee. I didn’t see where it was too tight; the gathered front fit fine, the empire waist the right size.

“Why?” I finally asked.

“It doesn’t feel right around the hips...”

Sighing, I stepped up to her and put my hands on her sides, just beneath the gathered neckline and started to pat down, seeing if I could feel any tightness against the seams. Once I reached her hips, I realized what she meant.

“Turn around.”

She did as I told her. I thought about how using any extra fabric would affect how the fabric hanging below her hips would look. It might not poof out quite as much, so I tried it.

Impendo,” I muttered, pressing my wand right on the small of her back. I released the spell when I saw it was now too loose. “Redigo.” It went right back in, stopping when it was form-fitting. Aurelia moved to the mirror again and smiled. “Perfect! Thank you.”

“No problem.”

I turned back to my mirror and applied a light layer of make-up. Once I finished my eyes and any foundation, I started working on my hair, something I knew that would take up more time. I saw Aurelia watching me as I started to change around the colours and change the style.

“Merlin’s beard, Rose, how do you know all of this stuff?” Aurelia breathed when I finished.

My hair, originally wavy black with purple streaks in it, was now trimmed shorter half an inch and my natural platinum blonde underneath and a walnut brown on top. Unable to resist it, I added a blue streak in the blonde. I readjusted the curls so it they started loosely a few inches from the root and was fuller near the bottom. I then proceeded to pin up the top section of my hair into a half-ponytail, only leaving my sweep fringe and a small section of a fringe on the other side of my face, framing it more that way.

“French girls,” I responded, turning to face her. “Well, how do I look?” I looked at her, and then spun around in my silk, royal purple dress, the floor-length mermaid skirt flaring out in the breeze I created.

“Shoes?”

I lifted my dress bottom to show a shiny, silver platform sandal, raised on a thin heel of one inch. They weren’t too high to hurt after walking or dancing awhile, but they still had a pretty heel.

“You’re going to knock the wind out of every guy there,” she told me, smiling brightly. “I love your hair too. So your natural hair isn’t actually black?”

“No, it’s what’s underneath,” I responded. I didn’t need to hide this ridiculous truth from her.

“Malfoy blonde?”

I cringed at the name. “Sure.” I then looked at her. “By the way, whatever Goyle is eating now will drop from his mouth to the ground and he won’t give a care in the world about it. You look stunning too.”

Aurelia spun around on her 2 and a half inch white heeled shoes, her platinum dress fanning out beneath her. When she finished her spin, I nodded. “Should we go now?”

“Can you do something for my hair?”

“What? It’s already up and perfect.”

“I mean with colour. It’s been this kind of brown for my entire life, next to no changes... ever. Can you think of anything that would make its natural colour look better?”

“Red highlights,” I said, the first thing that popped into my mind coming out of my mouth. “And as long as you don’t mind waiting...”

“I don’t! Will it take as long as it did for you just earlier?”

“No; the more I have to do the longer it takes. I was doing highlights when I was 9; I’ve spent years learning how to . It’ll take a minute, no more than that.”

I stepped up to her and kept to my promise. In just over a minute, I transformed her rather lank-coloured chocolate brown hair into a near-auburn with fine red highlights.

“Thank you!” she spun around and hugged me. I tensed, surprised at the sudden closeness. I patted her back awkwardly, but she didn’t seem to even notice I was tense. When she pulled away, we linked arms and paraded out of the dorm.

“Wow. Rosa, I love your hair!”

I looked back at Daphne Greengrass, surprised at what I saw. She was a simple strapless scarlet knee-length dress with a criss-crossed, rouched waist, emphasizing her slender hourglass figure. Her blonde hair was up in a loose chignon resting just on the nape of her neck.

“You should totally put up flyers saying you’d teach hair colouring charms classes. People would pay well to learn how to do that. I know I would.” She smiled at me.

“I’ll think about that,” I responded, smiling back. “Or I could just perform some services on the side. Either way, not tonight.”

“Aw, too bad, a lot of girls could use it.” She winced slightly at the thought. “Well, have fun. You won’t be a loner for long.” Daphne then looked at Aurelia. “And you definitely will shock Goyle right into the next century. Have fun, you two!”

“You too,” we said simultaneously.

She passed us and went down the two stairs into the common room. I poked my head around the corner to see her boyfriend’s reaction. He definitely looked rather blown away and was rather glum when she didn’t kiss him right away. They left the Slytherin common room, his arm around her. More girls came from the other direction, all dressed up, and entered the common room.

“Think you’re ready?” I asked, turning slightly to look at Aurelia. She was fidgeting, playing with the nails I spent quite a bit of time fixing up for tonight. “Stop that!” I slapped her hand.

“Sorry,” she squeaked in response, letting her hands drop. “Is he actually there though?”

I poked my head around the corner. This time there were definitely more guys in there than a few moments ago. Draco and his two friends were among the new guys in the common room.

“Yeah,” I responded, standing upright behind the wall again. “Come on.”

I extended a hand that Aurelia took, and together we stepped down into the common room. When every guy’s head turned and looked at us, lingering that way too, I felt a pang of self-consciousness, but pushed away that feeling and just smiled, doing my best to give off confidence as I led Aurelia up to the three guys.

“And you don’t even have a date?”

My head snapped to Draco and I looked up at him. He held my eyes with a cocky smile pulling at the corners of his mouth.

“Where’d you get that from?” I responded, doing my best to sound civil. He wasn’t going to ruin this night for me; it’s not like I even wanted to go that much.

“Just about everyone. You could’ve just given me an upfront no.”

I just looked amazed. “Wha... so for the past 2 months when I said no that just went in one ear and out the other?”

His smug smile grew. “I was making sure you knew what you were saying.”

I scowled. I looked next to me and realized Aurelia and Goyle disappeared. Crabbe, who was going with Millicent Bullstrode, had gone with him, leaving just Draco and me out of our original ‘group’.

“Did you manage to look past continual rejection to ask someone else?”

“Maybe.”

“Who would be crazy enough to...?”

I didn’t even need to finish my sentence; Pansy materialized next to me, as bright as can be.

“Ready, Draco?”

Draco didn’t once turn his eyes from me to Pansy. I could feel her anger rise, as a result. “Yes, let’s go.”

Pansy shouldered past me and turned so she was facing me too.

“Have fun alone.” She smirked and slid her arm through Draco’s and had to drag him away from me. He looked over his shoulder and clearly mouthed, “Save me a dance, love.”

I gave him a rather rude hand gesture in response. He just shook his head, amused, and turned back forwards and passed through the portrait hole. I waited a few minutes after he left, watching those that left. When a group of 3 girls passed through together, I followed as close behind them as acceptable, right down the corridors and to the Great Hall. We passed the teachers without issues and entered the ‘ball’ officially.

It was rather elaborately set up. The ceiling was brightly lit with red and green, emphasized by the snow that gave the illusion it was falling, but never once actually touching the hall’s floor. Various Christmas decorations danced around the walls, all leading up to the huge Christmas tree up at the front in the corner, just as elaborately strung with decorations and lights, an angel sitting on the top. I then looked around the floor and saw a huge record player playing the music, a dance floor packed with students, and tables to rest or have a snack at. Seeing the dance floor was very full, I used that as an excuse to grab a snack and sit down, alone. I munched on bite-sized Christmas cakes.

“How could someone like you not have a date?”

I looked up and into the eyes of Deryck Lyon, one of the few 7th year guys in Slytherin that wasn’t totally obnoxious.

“Because I suck at dancing.” I waited to gauge his response, curious as to if that would make him turn around and find someone else.

He just smiled in response. “You just need a better leader. Want to dance?” He held out an open hand to me. I looked at it, contemplating it for a moment, and took it. He lifted me up and led me to the dance floor.

The next two hours passed as I went through various dance partners, almost never getting to sit down and rest. Maybe I did myself up too well; I kept getting guys coming up to me one after the other; I nearly got kissed 3 times for Merlin’s sake! My feet were killing me at the end of the first two hours, so I turned down an offer for a third dance with Rossi Dalton, the beater on the house Quidditch team, just to sit down.

“Hey!” Aurelia plopped down beside me.

“Hey. How’ve you been?”

“I never thought Goyle, of all people, would know how to dance. Well!” she responded.

I smiled in response and took a drink. “So, are you enjoying this?”

“Definitely! How about you? You’ve at least gotten up from your seat here, right?”

“Lele,” I sighed. “I’ve spent the past 2 hours on the dance floor without taking a break. I’m a magnet.”

She laughed. “I’m not surprised. You really outdid yourself. Right down to the hair. Some people don’t even recognize you because it’s not black.”

I just rolled my eyes. As the song ended and a new one started, a guy came up to Aurelia and took her out to the dance floor. I watched her enjoy one song with this guy before Goyle came up and took her away for a dance... but the other guy wasn’t too pleased. Just as this fight was starting to get good, someone came up to me.

“Rosa?”

I forced myself to tear my eyes away from the growing scene and looked up. I forced a small smile. “Hey Harry.”

He reached his hand out to me. “You promised me a dance?”

I really wasn’t in the mood for dancing, let alone with him. But if I am to get any information I will need, I had to be agreeable. “That I did.” I looked from his hand to his eyes and reached out. “I really do suck, though.”

His hand wrapped around mine and pulled me up.

“We won’t do much then.”

He led me onto the dance floor as the song changed. To my irritation, it started slow. When it didn’t get any faster, and I saw couples wrapping arms around each other, I realized this was a slow dance. Harry let my hand go and moved closer. Figuring no one would notice, I let him and I moved closer myself, until his hands rested on my waist and mine on his shoulders. We were more or less swaying from side to side, slowly making a circle.

“Got sick of black?” Harry asked, looking at my hair.

“Yeah, why not try something new?” I responded, looking back up at him. “More natural colours.”

“Yet black was natural for you?”

“Haven’t you noticed I’m not like everyone else here?” I pointed out jokingly, hoping he wouldn’t have an intellectual moment.

“True,” he responded, his features lightening with a smile. “Why blonde?” When his hand ran through my hair and slide down my arm and back to my waist when his fingers did escape my hair, I felt a tingling trail on the skin his warm fingers touched.

“Something new,” I repeated.

The music began to crescendo until it was a heavier guitar sound with drums, but still slow. As the song intensified, Harry and I got closer; my arms wrapped around his neck and his around my waist, resting on the small of my back.

“But always with a crazy colour.” His eyes had found the blue streak.

I just smiled as I responded, “It’s like my signature now. Everyone knows me as someone with something crazy done to my hair.”

As we turned another complete circle, I saw him over Harry’s shoulder. Draco was sitting on a chair facing away from the table and towards the dance floor, his narrowed eyes on me. He looked so... suspicious. It was creepy.

When our eyes caught, he lifted his left hand and tapped twice on his ring finger. In return, I tapped twice on my middle finger on my left finger and smirked at him. His eyes burned angrily, but he didn’t look away from me. I looked away and up at Harry; I found him looking down at me.

“Who’re you looking at?”

“Everyone’s worst nightmare.”

As we turned, he got a look at what I meant. Harry’s jaw twitched and we began to aim our dancing direction more into the crowd.

“Rosa?”

My eyes fell from my hands to Harry.

“You really do look beautiful.”

I let myself smile, but my cheeks seemed to flush red without my permission. “Thanks. You clean up rather well, if I may say so myself.”

Harry’s face seemed to get closer until his forehead was resting against mine. A part of my mind told me that I didn’t want him this close, that it shouldn’t be this way... but the rest of my mind and my body wanted him even closer.

“You may.” His arms tightened around me until we were totally pressed up against each other. My arms wrapped even more around his neck in response. His breath veiled my face, smelling rather sweet; my heart began to pound even more.

I shouldn’t like him. It’s Harry Potter, the one that stands against everything my family stands for. And it’s not like he knows the real me...

At the same time, though, he’s nice, he cares, he’ll listen... and despite his dumb moments socially he can be fairly intelligent overall. I actually enjoy his company; even though I feel the need to lie to him, I feel like I can be myself around him. What a messed-up oxymoron.

I’m lying to protect him. To protect myself. He can’t know the truth.

Harry’s lips brushed mine suddenly. My mouth tingled as though it had been shocked. He then pressed his lips against mine. My entire body felt as though a current of electricity was trailing through it, making everything tingle. When I kissed him back, the feeling seemed to grow. As our kiss deepened, the voice telling me I shouldn’t be doing this, that it was wrong, ‘he’s a halfblood Gryffindor, you’re a pureblood Slytherin’... didn’t seem to matter anymore. I was enjoying this.

It was then I realized it. As much as the pureblood in me hated this, the rest of me knew this was the right choice. He may annoy me, but I can’t live without it.

Chapter 13
The Present

The first few days back at my house for vacation felt odd. That might be because the only thing my mum seems to be able to talk about is the blasted wedding she’s already started planning for Draco and me. The moment she uses the words ‘wedding’ and ‘Malfoy’ in the same sentence, I turn right around and try to leave the room. She once got on my case about not wearing my engagement ring.

“Rosa, dear, you seem to be lacking something...” my mom said as I walked into the room, holding the last remainder of my lunch in my hand.

"What? I should be lacking this sandwich?” I responded sarcastically. My mum loved messing with reverse psychology.

“No...” my mom got up and came up to me just as I finished my sandwich. She then took the hand I had my sandwich in. “It’s lacking.”

I looked at my left hand. “It’s... lacking more food?”

She scowled. “It’s amazing you aren’t much more of a porker.”

I gapped; much more? How the heck was I a ‘porker’ in the first place?

“Where’s that birthday gift you got?”

“Buried beneath every pile of clothes I still have in my trunk; why does it matter?” I responded flatly.

“You should have it on at least tonight if you’re so stubborn as to not wear it around the house.

I ripped my hand from my mom’s. “Why?” I asked suspiciously.

“I told you about the party at the Malfoys’ tonight.”

“No you didn’t!” I squealed. I had warned her about giving me at least a 12 hour notice if we’re doing anything outside of the house.

“Yes I did; I told you last night that we’re spending Christmas evening at the Malfoy Manor. They’re having a small get-together. Just us, the Lestranges, Yaxleys, Crabbes, Goyles, Brunes, and Parkinsons.”

“That sounds like a petit fête,” I grumbled sarcastically. My mum glared at me.

“You’re wearing it there. And that beautiful pair of earrings. Show that you’re at least trying.”

“Only if he shows it first,” I whined. Knowing Draco, that won’t be until the day he lays on his death bed...

“He did!” mum snapped, her eyes gleaming with a dark anger I had never seen before. Inwardly, I cringed. “He wouldn’t have sent you such thoughtful gifts if he didn’t. I don’t see why he’s encouraging your hair changes, but it shows he noticed what you like enough to think of such a gift. And peridot is your birthstone and you never wear earrings; it’s amazing you still have the hole in your ears! Wear them tonight.”

“I’ll wear the earrings but I won’t wear that blasted ring all ni... the Brunes?” I asked suddenly, realizing I recognized the name from the list mum spoke. Aurelia’s last name was...

“Yes, Evander and Aurora Brunes. Their daughter is in your year. You’ve mentioned her in letters...”

“Aurelia.” She didn’t know I was even engaged to Draco. Neither did Pansy... or those lumps of boys, Crabbe and Goyle. “The Parkinsons? Really?”

“Yes, I know, of all company...” mum sighed.

“You know the Parkinsons?” I asked, surprised.

“Yes, I know all the company. The Lestranges... live up to the name, strange. The Yaxleys, Crabbes, Goyles, even your friend’s parents. I’ve met the Parkinsons a couple times; Gloria Parkinson was a year ahead of me and once had to spend a week in my dormitory... I couldn’t stand her; she’s as needy as a newborn and just as loud.”

I smiled; like mother like daughter.

“Could you please dig out that ring and put on those earrings now before you forget?”

I sighed and walked away, not responding. Mum didn’t call after me, so I continued onto my room. As I shut the door behind me, I heard a hoot. I turned around and recognized Hedwig.

“Hey, Hedwig. What do you have for me today?”

She managed to hop slightly. I realized she had a small box attached to her foot and a letter attached on top. I came up to the snowy owl and untied them from her.

“Letter first? Or package?”

Hedwig hooted back. It didn’t give me much of an answer, so I started to rip open the small box. The wrapping paper came off, revealing a box tied shut perfectly. I ripped the string with a nail and the box expanded a few inches. I smiled at Harry’s craftsmanship and removed the lid.

I didn’t expect anything like a peridot necklace to ‘match’ Draco’s earrings – if that happened that would’ve been plain eerie - but I was still surprised to see a bracelet with red roses between inch long spaces of intricately designed gold bands. I unbuckled the tiny latch and slid it onto my wrist. Once it was on, the roses started to sparkle as if beneath sunlight. My eyes widened further when I realized the red roses were real, flawless rubies. Did Harry seriously have the galleons for this?

Tearing my eyes from the bracelet, I ripped the letter open.

Rose,
Merry Christmas. I hope you like your gift. A rose for a Rose.
I enchanted it myself. Tell me if it worked; if it didn’t I can try to fix it.
And thank you – very much – for your gift. How’d you know I needed a new pair? Good idea getting two.
How is your Christmas going?
I can’t wait for school to start again; I miss you.
-Harry

I folded the paper up again and put it in my small secret compartment of letters in my wardrobe and found a quill, ink, and parchment.

Harry,
I love it! Real rubies too? You really went out on limb. It’s beautiful and your charm worked perfectly (it shimmers as though it’s under sun. That’s what you did, right?)
I hope you don’t break that the first pair too quickly either.
I’m going to some lame Christmas Dinner with my mum and a bunch of her friends. You remember what kinds of friends I explain she has, right? Well, imagine hours on end with them.

Then again, he probably wouldn’t survive five minutes with the presence of my mum’s ‘friends’ quite literally...

Being penned up in an average-sized home with no one but my owl and mum, no interesting visitors... I’m going crazy here, it’s so boring!
Anyways, hope your Christmas is going better than mine.
Enjoy your new gifts as much as I love your bracelet gift! Maybe now you’ll be more competition against Slytherin.
Rosa ♥

I rolled up the letter and attached it to Hedwig. “Oh, before you go...” I dug into a small jewellery box and fished out an owl treat. I held it out, palm-flat, to Hedwig, who took it graciously and nibbled on it quickly before flying out. With a sigh, I went over to my trunk and started digging.

What did she buy him?

That was a very good chapter, it didn't feel like filler at all.

I can't wait for the look on Pansy's face!

whoops, must've taken it out while editing.
she just got him a pair of goggles (enchanted for seeing perfectly in all conditions) and some gloves similar to hers for Quidditch. Thats why she says "Maybe now you'll be more competition against Slytherin" in the end of her letter
Ok, thats good its not seen as filler. just seems like it in comparison to the drama in the next chapter. I mean, Pansy... and what Draco does in part 2 of chapter 14... yeah...

“Pansy, Goyle, have you gotten the chance to see Rosa’s birthday gift from me?”
“Those earrings?” Goyle asked.
I looked at him, surprised he knew. He gave me a knowing smile, his attention going back to Draco as quickly as it averted from him moments before.
“No, this.”
It was as if Draco read my mind about wiping Pansy’s smile off her face, but I didn’t want to do this. If she knew, she’d tell everyone. Then again, that’s just what Draco wants, right?

(clip from part 1 - I'll update all of it tomorrow... or Wednesday. At latest wednesday i promise)

Haha! that's awesome.
Well I don't give out spoilers all that often. May as well do it at least once before the story ends.
it was hard to pick a spoiler from part 1... so even after I found it, it deserved to be posted. All that hard work... what a waste it would've been
