The first chapter of those cute little creatures:

Quote:
Chapter 1

Harry sat on the train, which would return him shortly back to Platform 9 3/4. He looked around at the others in his compartment; Neville, Luna, and Ron all sat there quietly. No one had said anything except for when the lunch trolley came through, and even then the speaking was kept to a minimum.

Hermione had finally stopped crying, but only because she was now asleep on Ron's shoulder. He barely seemed to notice; he was instead focusing unsteadily out of the foggy window. Suddenly, the opening of the compartment door slashed through the silence, causing Neville to jump so badly that his head hit the back wall.

A shadowy figure entered the frame, and it took a few seconds for Harry to realize that it was Ginny. He tried to catch her eyes but she was doing her best to avoid his. Giving up, he waited for her to speak, which didn't take long.

"We'll be at the station soon. Mum just sent an owl ... had a nasty time trying to catch up with the train," Ginny joked. Realizing that no one was very amused, she hastily hurried on. "She wants to know if you lot will be visiting over the summer. You're all invited."

Luna looked up, her permanently astonished look plastered to her face. "Even me? Daddy says he might need me over the summer for The Quibbler. There have been recent sightings of the Holly Cranklenarbs in Australia ... and with Dumbledore ... dead ... he wants me close by."

Ron's gaze turned to the group when Dumbledore's name was mentioned. "Harry can't ... not yet. He has to return to Privet Drive until he's seventeen."

"Okay," Ginny nodded. "What about you, Neville?"

He slowly bit his lip, then answered, "I have to talk to Gran about it, but it should be all right. I'm almost seventeen, too; I'll be legal soon enough. I'll owl and let you know, okay?"

Much to Harry's surprise, Ginny settled herself into the seat next to him as Neville spoke. She smiled weakly, patted his hand, and returned her attention back to Neville. "That sounds good. I'll let mum know when we get to the platform ..."

Their wait wasn't long; soon the train was slowing to a halt, and people could be heard throughout the compartments, getting down luggage and saying their good-bye's. Harry followed suit and was soon in the company of his aunt and uncle, on his way back to their car which would return him to another boring summer. Much to his unknowing, Dobby the house-elf was following him closely, making sure that no harm would come his way.

Back at Hogwarts, the teachers and staff had met once more to decide on whether or not Hogwarts should close. Winky bent over the fire place, picking through ashes to get it clean.

"As ... current Headmaster," McGonagall spoke to the wave of professors in front of her, "I have listened to everyone's thoughts, including my own, and ... I believe Hogwarts should stay open. Dumbledore would have wanted it. It is one of the safest places students can be ... and even if there are only ten of them, that's good enough for me. I hope to see you all staying in Hogwart's employment."

Winky smeared some grime away from her face and hastily stood up with the bucket of dirt in her hand. "Winky is all done with the fire, Miss! Winky will return to the kitchen unless Miss needs Winky to do anything else?"

Professor McGonagall turned, surprised. Apparently, she'd forgotten that the elf was even in the room. "No, Winky, that's fine; you go back to the kitchens."

Winky nodded frantically and rushed from the room; once she reached the corridor, she snapped her fingers and appeared in the kitchens. Elves were bustling through the room, scrubbing the floors and pans.

"Stop, stop!" Winky cried.

Dobby rushed to her side. He'd just gotten back from following Harry to his house. "Is Winky feeling okay? Is there something wrong?"

Winky shook her head. "No, no! Winky has news about Hogwarts!"

As this announcement, it was as if time had stopped; every elf had completely frozen and any desire they had to clean at that moment had vanished.

"Winky was cleaning the Headmistress' office ... and Winky heard ... Winky heard that Hogwarts will be staying open!"

A loud uproar followed this proclamation; cheering emanated and several house-elves began dancing. During all of this, Dobby disappearing was not noticed.

____

Harry's room in number four, Privet Drive, was sufficiently dusty. Dobby had quite an urge to clean it while waiting. The Dursely's weren't even back from the train station yet; however, just when Dobby was getting slightly anxious, the sound of a car pulling into the driveway made his hopes rise once more. Not long after, the door swung open, and Harry entered the room, dragging his trunk behind him.

"Dobby! What are you doing here?"

A grin spread across Dobby's face. "Dobby comes with news, sir! Winky heard-"

"Winky? Is she doing better now?" Harry questioned. In truth, he hadn't thought much about the elf recently. With Sirius dead, and then Dumbledore, not much else had come to mind.

"Oh, yes, sir. Winky had laid off the butterbeer and is even cleaning Hogwarts, sir! But Winky told Dobby and all of the house-elves news, about Hogwarts!"

Harry collapsed onto the bed next to Dobby. He stretched his hands behind his head and met Dobby's eyes. "What?"

"Hogwarts will be reopening, sir!"

Harry sat straight up. "What? I thought ... no way. McGonagall is letting them?"

"From what Dobby knows, it was the Headmistress' idea!" Dobby exclaimed. "All of the house-elves is very excited! Many were upset, including Dobby, sir, about Master Dumbledore's death. Many cried for long days, sir, and some have even been talking getting together to do one last thing for him. Hopefully, Hogwarts staying open will be good enough; Dobby just wants to work, and so do they! Dobby wants to serve Master Dumbledore, even if he is ... dead."

"Wait, wait, wait ..." Harry said, thoughts racing through his head. "So ... the school is reopening ... and all of the elves want to ... what, avenge Dumbledore? Or just ... clean his school?"

Dobby shook his head. "You is missing the point, sir. They is just wanting to do something. Lots of ideas has been flying around ... They is wanting to help him by helping you. Sir, will you be coming back?"

At this, Harry was lost for words. He'd been thinking about it so frequently, and while he had told Ron and Hermione that he wasn't returning, Dobby's pleading expression made Harry soften up. And, now that he really thought about it, Hogwarts would be the safest place for Harry to reside while hunting out the Dark Lord ...

"Yes, Dobby ... I'm coming back," Harry nodded, while standing up.

The house-elf jumped onto his feet and hugged Harry tightly around the ankles. "Oh, they will all be so excited! Dobby cannot wait to tell them that you is returning, and that they will get to help Dumbledore after all! Thank you, thank you, sir!"

With that said, Dobby let go and snapped his fingers once more, returning to Hogwarts to tell all of the news.

Perfect portrayl of the house elves, well, Dobby and Winky anyway. You have the langauge down pat. Considering Harry has said different things to different people, I'm intrigued to find out just what he does, and to find out just what the hosue elves have up their sleeves. Good job!

Second chapter :]

Quote:
With a loud pop, Dobby nearly Apparated on top of Winky, who was sitting on a stool fumbling with a half empty bottle of butterbeer. Winky screamed out in terror at the surpise, and nearly fell off the stool. One of her long, slender hands grasped onto the ends of the stool as she pushed herself back up with the other.

"Hic...Dobby ... hic ... scares Winky! ... Hic," the inebriated house-elf cried out.

Dobby steadied himself, and looked at the poor house elf, "Why does Winky drink herself again?" Dobby asked, as he looked around the kitchen, noticing that it was unusually quiet.

"Dobby thoughts this was a party to celebrate Hogwarts staying open," he thought aloud. "But Dobby says this looks more like a ...." he was going to say funeral, when he realized his foolishness.

Dobby grabbed the bottle from Winky's shaking hands and began whacking himself on the forehead with it.

"Arghh," Dobby began to mumble. "Dobby musn't say such things! Dobby almost forgot Dumbledore has left us! Dobby mustn't ever forget! Dobby must always remember Dumbledore... the greatest Master Hogwarts and house-elves have ever had!" he cried out as a welt from where he had repeatedly struck himself began to swell up.

Dobby dropped to the floor in frustration. His hands barely held his shaking head up as he wept openly among the other elves. The kitchen suddenly came to a complete standstill as the house-elves witnessed the usually jovial house elf sprawled out on the floor in complete devastation.

The house-elves were creatures who rarely shared such a display of emotion like this. However, Dumbledore was the one master that they all agreed was ideal to work for. He treated house-elves just the way they wanted to be treated; he always had work for them to do, and he gave them quarters far away from students and staff so that they could go about their business as house-elves should. He never made them work if they didn't want to, and even offered to pay some house-elves, even though most took offense to it. He was a master that didn't mind the elves speaking badly of him, although no house-elf ever felt the need to. The ripple of this loss was finally beginning to hit.

Dobby sat hunched against the wall, freely letting the tears fall. A soft, gentle hand laid on his shoulder and he looked up to see a small elf peering back at him.

"Tinka says don't you cry Dobby sir. Tinka thinks Dumbledore would not want his house-elves to be sad," she said looking down at Dobby with consoling eyes. "No, sir; Tinka thinks Dumbledore would want us house-elves to be strong and to keep working to make Hogwarts proud. Yes, that's what Tinka thinks, Dobby, sir." she said nodding.

Dobby rubbed his eyes, and picked up the butterbeer bottle that was now at his feet and began once again to hit himself with it. "Arghh! Tinka is right! Silly Dobby sitting here crying when there is work to be done. Ooooh Dumbledore would be so ashamed of Dobby ... so ashamed ..." he wailed.

Tinka smirked as she watched Dobby transform back into the crazy house-elf she knew him to be. She patted Dobby's shoulder comfortingly. "Tinka says it's okay, Dobby sir. Dumbledore knows how much Dobby loved him, sir. Of course Dobby will be saddened, but he mustn't forget that he has a new master to serve and make happy now....."

Dobby's eyes lit up at the last phrase spoken. He jumped up, pushing the bottle off onto the floor. It shattered, but Dobby didn't care. An old elf by the name of Argyle conjured a broom, and muttered under his breath as he pushed Dobby aside and began to clean the mess. Dobby did not seemed phased one bit by it; instead, he picked Tinka up and swung her around. "Tinka is a genius, yes she is!" Dobby cried.

"Dobby does have a new master to serve. Dobby musn't spend all day fretting around here. No! Dumbledore would want Dobby helping Harry Potter! Yes he would... Dobby must now serve Harry Potter! He must protect Harry Potter from He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, he should!" said Dobby, bouncing happily around the kitchen, while the other house-elves stared.

Tinka closed her eyes, as she spun around the kitchen in Dobby's arms. When Dobby put her down, Tinka found herself dizzily swaying, frozen in place, unsure how to react. She watched as Dobby bounded around in celebration. Much to her own surprise, tears began to well in her eyes.

"Harry Potter? But ... Tinka thought Dumbledore was your master ... Tinka thought you wanted to serve Dumbledore," she said in confusion, a drop slowly running down her cheek. "What will Tinka do without Dobby sir?" She began to cry.

Dobby walked over to Tinka, returning the kindness that she had show him before. He knelt down next to her and slowly wiped her face off. "Dobby is serving Dumbledore. Dobby promises never to save Harry Potter's life again, but Dobby never promised not to protect Harry Potter. Dobby knows Dumbledore would wants Dobby to protect Harry Potter, and so Dobby must go and serve his new master and make his former master ... Dumbledore sir, proud."

Tinka reached out and latched onto Dobby. "Tinka wants to come, too, then. Tinka can help protect Harry Potter!" she said, looking at Dobby pleadingly.

"Dobby doesn't want to put Tinka in harm's way. The task is much to dangerous for Tinka. Tinka must stay at Hogwarts where Tinka is safe." Dobby answered, as he looked around the kitchen at all the others. They had stopped what they were doing and were watching the conversation between the two, completely distracted.

Suddenly Dobby's eyes grew wide, as a thought came to his mind. Grabbing Tinka and pulling her to her feet, Dobby cried, "Tinka cannot come with Dobby, because Tinka has a job to do right here!"

Tinka stood before Dobby and continued to stare at him longingly. "But Tinka doesn't want to stay here in the kitchens. Tinka wants to -"

"But Tinka needs to stay here in the kitchen," Dobby interrupted, "Tinka must gather a house-elf army!"

There was a sudden crash from across the kitchen. Schmoop, a quiet, yet gentle elf gasped as he heard Dobby's words. "An army, Dobby sir? But we house-elves doesn't want to fight. We is content to work here at Hogwarts where it is nice and safe," Schmoop said with a nod.

"Hogwarts is no longer safe without our Dumbledore, sir. We musn't let Dumbledore's ..."

But Dobby couldn't say the words that acknowledged the fact that Dumbledore was gone. With a sigh, he continued, "We must fight for our master, Dumbledore! Dumbledore isn't wanting Hogwarts to be unsafe! We must fight to help make Hogwarts safe again! A house elf is content to serve his master. Well anyone who serves Hogwarts is our masters and we must fight to keep them safe." Dobby said in a new-found confidence - one that was never much displayed in house-elves.

Dobby turned to Tinka, whose eyes were beaming with pride.

"This is why Tinka must stay behind. Tinka must help fight." Placing his hand upon Tinka's shoulder, Dobby looked her deeply in the eyes. He suddenly seemed taller to her - almost wiser. Dobby gently nodded to Tinka, "Tinka would make a good leader; Tinka is brave and smart and kind. Tinka needs to stay here at Hogwarts. Tinka needs to lead the house elves to fight, she does."

Tinka smiled brightly, "Yes, Dobby sir! Tinka will stay and fight! Tinka will protect Hogwarts and make Dumbledore sir proud. Hogwarts will be safe again Who will fights with Tinka?"

The house elves peered around at each other, none of them wanting to speak out. Everything had fallen into an almost stunned silence.

Dobby stepped in front of Tinka, "Hogwarts is not safe for students or house-elves. He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named will take over, and you will be forced to be his servants. Does house-elves want to work for the Dark Lord? Does house elves want to work for evil?"

Schmoop stepped forward again, and this time he showed his support for the house-elf army, "No!" he cried out. "We doesn't want to be serving evil. Dumbledore sir was a kind, gentle master ... Schmoop isn't going to let him down! Schmoop is going to fight!"

Another house-elf stepped out of the shadows, "Pips is going to fight, too!"

"So is Quirly!"

"And Tippin!"

"Beezley will fight for his master!"

One by one, to the astonishment of Dobby and Tinka, the house-elves pledged themselves to fight. Tinka jumped up and down, squealing with delight.

"Tinka is so happy and she has Dobby to thanks sir!" She threw her arms around Dobby and gave him a huge hug. "Tinka promises to make Dobby proud and help protect Hogwarts."

"Dobby has no doubts Tinka will do great. That's why Dobby is leaving. Dobby knows his place is with Harry Potter and he is leaving Hogwarts in good hands. Dobby shall return soon enough and Dobby will help the army prepare. Harry Potter will have some ideas for us, Dobby is sure. But Dobby must go now. Dobby must find Harry Potter before danger finds him " Dobby said with a sense of urgency, as he raised his fingers up and with a quick snap, Dobby was gone once more.

With the pop came a sound of the busy kitchen again. This time, along with the preparations for the evening dinner, there was a lot of chatter among the elves on the upcoming battle they were now sure they were going to fight.

Third part for the elves!

Quote:
Chapter 3

Harry Potter was now laying in his bed in Gryffindor Tower, having returned to Hogwarts. He stared idly at the ceiling wondering how on earth he was going to complete the task ahead of him. There really didn’t seem to be a way and surely, now that he was at school he’d have homework and McGonagall was not likely to let him leave for missions, along with Hermione and Ron.

He rolled over onto his side to stare instead at the gap between his curtains where moon light was filtering in. He let out an audible gasp, bolted upright and has his wand in his hand faster than you could say ‘house-elf’.

“Harry Potter, sir!” Dobby squeaked, a slight quiver of fear in his voice at the sudden arming of his favourite person.

“Do-Dobby?” Harry said. “What are you doing here? I mean…” he faltered. “I know you work here, but what are you doing here,” he motioned around the room, “in Gryffindor Tower, sneaking up on me like that?”

“Dobby didn’t mean to sneak up on Harry Potter, sir! Dobby has been waiting a long while for Harry Potter to return to his room. Dobby is wanting a word with Harry Potter, sir, because Dobby knows that Harry Potter is needing help to stop He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named!” The elf trembled a bit at the mention of Voldemort, looking around nervously.

“What do you mean by ‘help’, Dobby?” Harry asked nervously.

“Not to save your life, sir, but to help you and protect you as best I can!” the elf all but shouted. “I is keeping my promise never to save Harry Potter, sir’s, life again.” The elf nodded vigorously to prove his point. “I is only wanting to help stop He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named! The other house-elves wish to help, too. We is forming an army, Harry Potter, sir, to fight when the time is come to stop the evil spreading!”

“Your lot’s going to fight?” Harry asked incredulously. “But—you don’t have wands or anything.”

“No, Harry Potter, sir, we do not, but we has powerful magic that no wizard or witch does. We can do all sorts of things to help aid in the coming storm,” Dobby said, sounding very wise, “which is why we is wanting to help! And that is why Dobby has come to see Harry Potter, sir. He wishes to be Harry Potter, sirs, elf in this time of need, in honor of the great Dumbledore—I knows he would want Dobby to do all he can for Harry Potter, sir!”

“Erm… thanks, Dobby, I’ll um… let you know.”

Dobby smiled so brightly at Harry, he was almost tempted to keep his promise, but really, he didn’t want to put Dobby in danger or himself. Dobby snapped his fingers and next moment he was gone.

Harry returned to his task of staring and wondering after that. He would go to McGonagall tomorrow and inform her of his plan; he wouldn’t tell her about the Horcruxes, but he would tell her that he had a very important mission, one he had started with Dumbledore and which he intended to finish, in school or not.

****

Dobby returned to the kitchens in a right state of glee. He was going to help Harry Potter! He was going to put a stop to the rise of the Dark Powers approaching!

He was to happy that despite having already done the cleaning, he decided to do one more round through the castle just to make sure.

By the time Dobby returned to the kitchens, very weary from his excursions about the castle, the other elves were already up and making breakfast.

It would be a long day, but Dobby would not complain and he would visit Harry Potter again soon to see what he would need.

*****

Harry Potter in question was still asleep in his bed.

He’d had another restless night of sleep, tossing and turning, visions of Horcruxes plaguing his mind.

He awoke with a start. Birds were chirping outside the window and Ron was still snoring. It wasn’t so early that he couldn’t nip down to the Great Hall for a bit of breakfast before going to see the Headmistress.

He dressed quickly and was out the door in no time.

He barely paid attention to his food as he hurried to eat. The Headmistress was not yet up, but that didn’t matter, he would head her off before she made it down to breakfast to have a word with her in her office.

Harry had barely set foot on the second floor landing when he spotted McGonagall. She was strolling towards him, her lips in a tight line. She spotted him instantly and though Harry was taller than her now, he was still intimidated by her.

“Er…. Professor?” he called.

“Yes, Potter?” she asked in clipped tones. Apparently she’d woken up on the wrong side of the bed.

“Might I have a word with you…erm… in private?” He looked over her shoulder at the stone gargoyle which stood motionless in front of the revolving staircase.

McGonagall gave a little sigh and said, “I was wondering when I’d be getting a visit from you. Come along.” She swept back towards her office and shouted the password before she was even in front of the gargoyle. “Butterbeer!”

The gargoyle jumped aside and the two of them were soon heading up into her office.

The office was not unoccupied, but McGonagall paid no never mind to the small little elf cleaning. All the portraits of previous heads of the school were sleeping peacefully—except for the most recent head, Albus Dumbledore.

“Ah, Harry,” he said in his soft voice, “it’s good to see you.”

Harry nodded, hardly able to speak as a large lump the size of a bullfrog had just lodged itself in his throat at the sight of his old and dear headmaster.

“What is you wanted to speak to me about, Potter?” McGonagall snapped, pulling Harry out of his reverie.

“Oh, erm… right. Well, the thing is, Professor, I wasn’t actually going to come back to school. I was going to be doing what Professor Dumbledore and I had started last year—and I won’t tell you what it is, so there’s no point asking me—and well, Ron and Hermione would be coming with me. So, what I’m trying to say is: I’m not going to be staying at Hogwarts all the time. I’ll have to leave, and so will Ron and Hermione, to do this.”

Harry had said this all very fast and in one breath, so by the time he’d finished he was out of breath. Harry was trying his best not to look up at Dumbledore, who was watching him intently.

“I see, Potter.” McGonagall did not look exactly pleased by this. “Unfortunately, Potter, you do not give orders. I do. Not only am I headmistress of this school, I am also head of the Order and I will not let you leave. I realize that you are of age and that, yes I let you join the Order this summer, it does not mean you get to go gallivanting with your friends on missions I know nothing about that could be dangerous.”

“Of course it’s dangerous, Minerva,” Dumbledore’s portrait said. “But Harry must do this. I realize you are now in charge here, but I must intervene, I’m afraid. Harry will go. And so will Mr. Weasley and Miss Granger.”

McGonagall pursed her lips tightly, but did not argue. “Very well, Potter, you may go on these—missions of yours and you may bring your friend, but you will not let this affect your homework. I trust Miss Granger will see to it that you and Mr. Weasley pass our N.E.W.Ts but I will not tolerate your failing because of this. And you will inform me of when you plan on leaving and for how long.”

Harry nodded. “Thank you, Professor.” Harry looked up at Dumbledore, who was smiling at him benignly. “Professor Dumbledore,” he nodded. “Thank you.”

Harry Potter left the headmistress’. The head of Hogwarts sat behind her desk for a short while, then she too left.

The house-elf who’d been cleaning had stopped to listen to the conversation and was now positively shaking with delight at the news. With a crack like a whip, she had returned to the kitchens.

“Dobby!” Tinka called. “Oh, Dobby, Tinka has news of Harry Potter for you!” she said gleefully.

“What news does Tinka bring Dobby?” the elf asked, halting in his task.

“Tinka overheard—she was cleaning in Madam Headmistress’ office— she heard that Harry Potter is to be going on missions with his friends, Master Weasley and Mistress Granger.”

Dobby’s already large eyes grew in size. “Harry Potter is going away?”

“Only for short amounts of time, Dobby! Tinka heard Madam Headmistress—she almost didn’t let him—and he will be coming and going! Headmaster Dumbledore stopped Madam Headmistress from denying Harry Potter!” she squealed.

“Dobby will go to Harry Potter!” Dobby cried. “He will help Harry Potter on his missions!”

***

It was not long before Harry received another visit from Dobby, who was absolutely beside himself with glee.

“Harry Potter, sir!” he squeaked. “Dobby has come to see you.”

“Dobby? What’s up?”

“Dobby has heard that Harry Potter, sir, is to be going on missions—“

“Where’d you hear that?” Harry snapped.

“Oh, Dobby hears things,” he said evasively, “while cleaning.”

“You overheard me talking with McGonagall?”

“No, Tinka did, but that is not what Dobby has come to talk with Harry Potter about, sir.”

“What is it then?”

“Dobby wishes to go with Harry Potter sir!”

Harry sat for a moment in stunned silence. Then, “No, Dobby; I’m sorry but this is dangerous. I’ve already got Ron and Hermione coming along and I—I won’t put anyone else in danger.”

Dobby’s ears dropped but he nodded. “Yes, Harry Potter, sir, Dobby understands. If Harry Potter is needing anything, please let Dobby know!” he squeaked miserably before Disapparating.

****

Harry Potter and his companions did indeed leave without Dobby late in the month of September.

However, October arrived with the return of the Boy Who Lived and his traveling companions.

Harry had barely been back for ten minutes when Dobby had found him in the Room of Requirement with Ron and Hermione pouring over books.

“Harry Potter, sir, has returned!” Dobby squeaked happily, rushing to Harry’s side and hugging him.

“Hi, Dobby.”

“Oh, Dobby has been most worried about Harry Potter and his friends! Sir has been gone a long, long time!”

“Yeah…” Harry said, sounding rather disappointed.

“Harry Potter seems upset. Dobby wishes he could make Harry Potter feel better.”

Harry’s eyes seemed to alight with a kind of new found hope and he leaned forward to speak to Dobby. “Actually, there is something you can do! Dobby, we found something that needs to be destroyed, but the only problem is, we can’t reach it. Only someone small could and they’d need powerful magic to retrieve it unharmed. Do you think—could you—“

“Say no more, Harry Potter, sir! Dobby will do it!”

Harry beamed.

***

It was another week before Harry, Ron, Hermione and Dobby would be leaving. Harry had told Dobby that he would be in need of warm clothing, because it was very cold where they were headed and that it would be dangerous. Harry had explained in detail all about the Horcruxes and that if Dobby wasn’t careful, he could be hurt and Harry did not want that.

They arrived upon thestrals, though as far as Dobby was concerned, he was flying on nothing at all and when they had almost reached their destination, they left the thestrals behind, using Dobby’s magic the rest of the way.

It was indeed cold as death where ever they were. They were surrounded by mountains and ice. They trudged along till they finally found what looked to Dobby like a crack in the mountains face.

He peered inside, noticing how small the hole was. He could easily Apparated inside there and fit, but Harry Potter or his friends could not.

Deep within Dobby saw something very shiny, glinting within, but he was not exactly sure what it was.

He Apparated inside the little cavern and found instantly that the thing within was a gold cup. It was frozen solid, but when he touched it, it burned terribly. Thus he took off his many socks and held tight, returning to Harry’s side.

Harry had a large brown sack ready and Dobby dropped the cup inside.

“Thanks Dobby, you’re a life saver!”

“Anything for Harry Potter, sir!” Dobby shouted happily.

“Harry,” Hermione said anxiously, “can we go now?” She was looking around, clutching Ron’s hand nervously.

“Yeah,” he said. “Dobby, can you take us back to the thestrals?”

Dobby did not need telling twice and they were soon flying back to Hogwarts on the back of the invisible creatures.

When Dobby returned, it was to an anxious Tinka, a drunk Winky, an irritable Kreacher, and a band of happy house-elves applauding him.

Chapter Four: A Stranger in the Night

Dobby was sitting with Harry Potter in the kitchens of Grimmauld Place. Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger had gone out to get food. Kreacher was grumbling throughout the house, trying to find more lost Black family heirlooms.

The two sat in silence, worrying about Ron and Hermione, unable to stop the visions of horror filling their minds.

A knock at the door made them jump. Harry was at the door faster than you could say ‘Firebolt’ and Dobby was not far behind. However, it was not Ron and Hermione returning with food parcels, but a small female house-elf trembling from head to foot in the snow.

“Dobby!” she squealed, flinging her arms around the startled house-elf. “Tinka has missed Dobby! Tinka has come to Dobby with news! We has been preparing like Dobby said we should,” Tinka said rapidly.

“Erm…” Harry began, “Dobby, who is this?”

“Oh, Harry Potter, sir!” Tinka squealed. “Tinka is most honored to meet you! Dobby speaks most highly of you sir!”

“Erm… thanks, Tinka, was it?”

The little elf nodded. Harry cast a side-ways glance at Dobby before closing the door. The three of them returned to the kitchen, Harry now more worried for his friends, Dobby and Tinka speaking rapidly of the army being formed in the Hogwarts kitchens.

Harry sat down, trying to clear a space on the messy table and removing pieces of parchment from chairs. He hadn’t even noticed in his haste, that he’d dropped a small locket, which fell to the floor with a soft clunk. Tinka had picked up the locket, which was now open, her eyes wide.

“H-Harry Potter, sir, where is you getting this locket from?”

“Wha—“ Harry whirled around and stopped dead, his eyes on the locket. An angry flash of green seemed to pass through his emerald eyes as he stared at the locket. “It’s a long story, Tinka.”

“But—how is you getting a Sagelutte family heirloom, sir? Tinka is wondering.”

Harry gaped. “What do you mean, ‘Sagelutte family heirloom’?”

“Tinka is wondering, is Harry Potter of the Sagelutte family?”

“Not that I know of.”

“Oh…” Tinka said, her perky ears drooping slightly. “Tinka thought… but…”

”What did you think, Tinka?”

“The Sagelutte family is the family my family has served for many, many years, Harry Potter. But they is all dead Tinka hears and Tinka knows nothing of her family…”

“Tinka what can you tell me about the Sagelutte family? Did any of them maybe—marry someone with the last initial B or maybe you knew someone with the initials R.A.B?”

Tinka shook her head. “Tinka knows not whether a Sagelutte married a B, sir.” Her face suddenly lit up. “But Tinka knows of R.A.B! It is the family’s motto, Harry Potter!”

Harry’s heart skipped a beat. “The Family’s motto?”

“Yes, Harry Potter, sir! Reluctor Atrum Bellum!” she squealed.

“What does that mean?”

“Resist the dark war, sir. The Sagelutte family was of good people sir, very good people. They was wanting to always keep peace and they was helping when He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named was in power the first time, sir!” Her eyes suddenly watered. “That is why they is dead. He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named was not happy with them, no sir,” she said, shaking her head so her ears flapped.

“Tinka, can you tell me—do you know if any one in the Sagelutte family knew more about Voldemort? Maybe about Horcruxes?”

Tinka jumped in fright at the sound of the name, but nodded. “Horcruxes is bad, Harry Potter sir. My great grandmother is telling me about them when I is little house-elf. She says they is Dark Magic; she says not to ever, ever serve wizards who has one. She says that He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named is a Dark Wizard with many and that our masters did not know, but she did. House-elves has many ears, Harry Potter, sir, and she was hearing things and she was seeing things and knowing things she should not have known. My great grandmother was a smart elf, sir, she could speak like wizards and write and she read books too!”

Harry was shaking with excitement. He pulled the note from within the locket and held it out to Tinka. “Do you recognize this writing, Tinka?”

Tinka all but fell off her chair in her excitement. “Oh! Tinka does, Harry Potter, sir! It is Tinka’s great grandmother’s writing, sir!”

“Tinka, listen to me, did your great grandmother ever disappear from the house and return with a locket?”

“Oh, yes, she did Harry Potter, sir! She left with a goblin-made goblet that was very magical! And she comes back to me and tells me to hide a big locket for her!” Her ears began to droop, “Tinka did not like the locket Harry Potter, sir, but Tinka did what she was told. The locket was not nice. It made Tinka sick and it made Tinka’s great grandmother sick. She died, sir, after finding the locket. And she told me to destroy it, but--” Tinka’s lip trembled, “Tinka could not, sir!” She fell forward in her chair, crying.

“Tinka, where did you hide the locket?”

“Tinka is keeping it safe like she said she would,” the elf sniffed. “Tinka is not keeping it in the Sagelutte house, no, she is not. Tinka is keeping it with her at Hogwarts where she can keep an eye on it.”

“I need that locket, Tinka. I need to destroy it.”

“Harry Potter wishes to destroy it? But it is impossible, sir! The locket is evil and Tinka does not want to give Harry Potter something that will make him sick.”

“Tinka, please! I need that locket. I need it to stop Voldemort.”

Tinka shook, but nodded. “Tinka will get the locket. She will get it for Harry Potter.”

Harry turned to Dobby who had remained quiet throughout his conversation with Tinka. “Dobby, go with her and help her. Do not touch the locket. Wrap it up in something, but do not touch it, then bring it back here.”

Dobby nodded and the two elves were gone with a crack.

Chapter 5 from the Elvsies.

Quote:
Harry Potter paced restlessly in front of the door at Number Twelve, Grimmuald Place. Running his hand through his already messy black hair, he waited impatiently for Ron and Hermione to return. As if on cue, the front door burst open and Ron entered quickly amid swirls of icy snow.
"Bloody Hell! It's freezing out there!" Rubbing his arms as he shook off some snow, Ron looked at Harry accusingly and said,"Well, you look nice and warm! It's not fair you know, you getting to..."
But, Ron never got to finish his sentence as there was a loud " RONALD!" and he was shoved forward almost knocking Harry over in the process. After righting himself and Harry, Ron turned to a grocery bag laden Hermione and said indignantly,"Hey! What did I do?"
Struggling with the weight of the bags, Hermione pushed her way past the door and said huffily,"It's what you didn't do, Ron!"
Looking confused, Ron looked at Hermione, then at Harry, and then back at Hermione. "What? I opened the door for you..."
Giving Ron her best death glare, Hermione shuffled the bags and said, "Well thanks much!"
Harry shook his head at Ron with a smile and stepped forward to take some groceries. "Here Hermione, let me."
Giving Harry a bright smile, she said,"Thank you Harry!" and followed him into the kitchen but not without a parting remark for Ron's benefit, "At least someone here has manners!"
Ron rolled his eyes and shut the door before making his way into the kitchen.
Harry smiled at his two best friends and said with a smile, "I'm glad you're both here. I have some fantastic news!"
At the excited look on Harry's face, Hermione stepped around the table and grabbed his arm. "Harry, what is it? Did something happen?"
"Yes! Something has definitely happened! C'mon, let's go sit in here." Pulling Hermione with him, Harry turned to head toward the den.
Turning back to Ron, who was foraging through the grocery bags, Hermione heaved a great sigh and said,"Come on Ron! Harry has something important to tell us!"
Rubbing his tummy and looking a bit put out, Ron followed the two into the den.
When they were all settled Harry took a deep breath and said,"First off, we now know what R.A.B. stands for." Hermione and Ron quickly shared a look of surprise before Harry continued." Apparently it is a family motto, Reluctor Atrum Bellum. It means.."
"Resist the dark war..." Hermione piped in.
Harry smiled; he wasn't surprised that Hermione would know what the translation meant. Continuing, he added, "Right. It gets better. There is a locket and I believe it could be - no - I know it is a Horcrux!" Harry then went on to explain about Tinka and everything else that had transpired that evening.

Back at Hogwarts,Tinka and Dobby were making their way down a long a hallway with many small doors. Stopping in front of the very last one, Tinka looked around before entering the room. Immediately she made her way over to the far wall and ran her small hands over the rough stone. Finally finding a large loose stone, she pulled it out and pointed into the dark recess left behind it.
"Dobby is seeing it?"
Dobby leaned forward and peered through the darkness until he saw the gold locket.
Touching Dobby's shoulder, Tinka said fearfully, "Dobby must remember what Harry Potter tells him! No touchy the locket!"
Dobby gave Tinka nod and a smile as he pulled off one of the many socks he was wearing.
"Dobby knows no touchy locket, Tinka." Dobby said as he carefully took the locket with his sock and wrapped it so it wouldn't brush against his skin.
The two elves shared a look and sigh of relief at their success before heading back toward the kitchens.
When they entered, the other elves turned to greet them with many smiles. Dobby smiled back and jumped up on a nearby table clearing his throat. The other elves all turned to Dobby and fell silent as he began to speak.
"Fellow elves, Dobby thanks you all muchly for helping Harry Potter fight against He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. Dobby knows that Harry Potter thanks you muchly too. But, Dobby is thinking that long time passes since elves wakey The Power. So, Dobby is thinking that we should wakey the The Power now so elves be ready when time comes." The elves nodded solemnly at this and waited.
Dobby then raised his arms over his head and closed his eyes. Tinka, watching Dobby, did the same. The others quickly followed suit. To their disappointment, nothing happened at first - just a bit of wind. Then there came forth a mighty rumble. Bright blue swirls of light emmited from the elves' outstreached arms. Soon there was a loud humming sound and a force so great it shook the very foundation of Hogwarts itself. Upstairs, portraits grumbled, annoyed at having their peace disturbed, statues held fast to the trembling walls of stone, and the few wizards and witches that wandered the school brought forth their wands incase something dark might be amiss.
Back in the kitchens,Dobby lowered his arms and opened his eyes with a smile. As the other elves did the same, Dobby said happily, "The Power wakey!" A huge cheer arose from the elves at their success and
Dobby turned to Tinka and said, "Dobby and Tinka go to Grimmy Place and tell Harry Potter the news and brings him the locket." Tinka nodded so hard that her ears flopped about as they both snapped their fingers. There was a loud crack and both were soon gone.
