And We All Fall Down... Upstead Style - Sa13+

Ok, so hey! I'm Zoe, and this is a story type thing about my current school RPG character Jake Upstead. If the layout seems confusing, then basically it's split into the world from Jake's point of view (Dark Red) and the world from a third person narrative (Navy) usually about his past/parts that aren't in the RPG. The Navy won't always be in chronological order, but it will be related to the Dark Red part in that entry. Seems confusing but you'll pick it up, don't worry. Plus, don't demand for updates, chances are I'm busy, but will update every couple of weeks, and I wouldn't demand to see your character here. If Jake has met your character, chances are he'll mention them.

And We All Fall Down, Upstead Style

Summer of 2055

“Hey there, Ms Lady…”

His voice was close to silent. She couldn’t have had a chance to think, before she was swept up, inside of his chocolate brown eyes. Brooke Blackly gazed into these eyes, that seemed to unlock a thousand doors. She was lost, she was 19, she needed someone.

“Hey…” she smiled up at him. “What’s your name, then?”

“Call me Heath… since that’s my name and all,” the man smiled. “What about you?”

Brooke stared up at him, contemplating whether to reveal who she was. In the end, she figured that it would do no harm to tell a muggle. “Ah, my name is Brooke… How old are you, if you don’t mind me asking?”

“I’m 21,” Heath smiled, sitting beside her on the cold pavement. Brooke wasn't surprised; he seemed extremely mature, though he looked incredibly young. Heath stared at the girl who was about 2 years younger, smiling, before looking out at the scene before them.

After a few minutes of silence, the silence was broken, and Brooke and Heath conversed.

She didn’t know he was a wizard, he didn’t know she was a witch, and they talked for hours, oblivious.

July of 2067

My name is Jake and this is my BOOK.

It’s not a diary, nor is it a journal, it is my BOOK.

I have always wanted to be famous, just to write a BOOK on my life.

Even if said BOOK is in journal form.

So, first thing’s first, obviously. I can’t see first things happening at any other point in a chronological scale…

I am Jacob Jakers Dale Blackly-Upstead. And I am ten-years old. I live in London with my mother. No brothers, no sisters, no father. Just my mother. We have my Grandparents living nearby, but my mother sees them more than I do.

My mother is Brooke Blackly. And my father is Heath Jakers Upstead. They never got married. I don’t think they even stayed together for much longer after I was born. My dad had some kind of… commitment issues or something. I’m not sure.

So, yeah. Jakers. That’s not really a name, but a modified name my dad had when he was born. He didn’t know his dad, either, or his mum. I think they died or something. But that was his name. He wanted to name me Jakers, but my mother argued. In fact, that was the last argument before he decided to leave. Apparently, he said I was a weird kid, but how can you tell that a kid is weird when they’re a few weeks old? Like I said, he had issues.

I went to school. A primary school. And that lasted until I’d almost turned 9. But then they asked me not to come back, and I don’t know why, but anyway, my mother kept me home for the next two years. I liked that, because she went out to work a lot, and I’d be home alone to learn from books on my own.

We’ve never been rich, but we’ve been well off. My dad sent my mum money all the time, until I turned 7, when he told her that he had other commitments. She wasn’t bothered, she didn’t even want the money, just put it in some “account” for me. Still, my mum earned a lot as well, from all the hours she dedicated to her work, and my grandparents gave us our house, all paid for, so that wasn’t a problem, either. I like money, because I like things. If something looks pretty, I want it. I love pretty things, and pretty colours. My bedroom is all sorts of colours. Purples, pinks, blues, reds, yellows, greens, oranges… I like it…

My birthday is August 31st, which automatically makes me the youngest kid in my year. It sucks, like mega sucks, but I’m also very small, so it’s not like I’m the biggest kid who can be bossed about.

I’ll bet I seem odd, don’t I? Everyone says it. Parents, teachers, doctors, people. All different kinds. But I know I’m normal. I just have… perks. And I’m not around people much, so I seem awkward.

Basically, there is nothing spectacular about me, at all. I’m normal. I’m not some royal kid, or a celebrity. I’m not magic and I’m not an athlete.

I just want people to hear my story, and read my BOOK.

Part 2: Spinning

August 31st 2056

Jacob Jakers Dale Blackly-Upstead: Newborn

“A baby?” Heath stared blankly at the 40 year old Doctor. He had momentarily forgotten about how they had expected this, and became silenced in shock before the memories came back. “Jakers!”

Heath and Brooke were both twenty, and had been expecting their child for the full 40 weeks, and the bawling baby boy had arrived decidedly right on time, on his due date.

“Can you show me?” Heath asked, breaking the temporary silence he had started, where the doctor scrutinised him. Where was the midwife? Heath watched as the man eyed him, somehow realising that he was being… assessed. Was something wrong with the baby?

Suddenly, the doctor shook his head and plastered on a fixed smile. “Yes of course,” he nodded. “Follow me.”

Heart bashing wildly against his rib cage, Heath followed the man through a sudden maze of corridors and squeaky shiny floors, before they encountered a private room. The man laid his hand on the door handle but seemed to think better of it and turned back towards Heath.

“We haven’t had a chance to tell your wife-”

“Girlfriend,” Heath corrected absent-mindedly, wondering what this was all about.

“I apologise. But, Brooke is sleeping, and the baby… he doesn’t act very…” The doctor pushed on the door handle. “You’ll see for yourself.”

Eyeing the man warily, Heath followed the man into the room. A fan was blowing by the open window, due to the fact that this had been one of the hottest days in the year. Brooke stirred in the hospital bed, clearly awoken by the sounds from outside the room, and the door opening. Heath’s attention was immediately drawn to the incubator at the side of the room, where a tiny baby laid, eyes open, staring somewhere.

Heath approached the baby and stared down at him. He could tell it was a boy, because of the indication on the side, and the stereotypical blue blanket. The baby looked up at Heath… no, through him. Maybe it was normal, Heath didn’t know, but the kid seemed to stare straight through him, as if he was stargazing.

“I’m calling him Jacob,” came a voice from the bed. Brooke. She looked exhausted, but Heath frowned.

“I thought we were naming him Jakers… my middle name?”

“Oh, Heath, don’t be so ridiculous,” Brooke snapped. “You know that he would be teased relentlessly-”

“YOU just want your whole life taken over and suppressed by normality-”

“Don’t give that originality stuff, I’ve just given birth to the kid, I know what he will be like-”

“You can’t say-”

“YES I can!”

A ringing silence followed Brooke’s final shout, and both adults realised how loud they had been. Even though the argument hadn’t lasted long, they feared they had somehow damaged their child, and turned to look at him.

Curiously, the baby was quite content, oblivious to any interaction between his parents, perhaps oblivious even to them. He just watched the fan by the window… spinning… spinning…

Jacob Jakers Dale Blackly-Upstead: 10 years and 335 days old

Wow… just… wow.

So, it turns out that I lied before, unintentionally of course. I said I wasn’t magic, ya see? And, this seems totally unbelievable, but… I am magic. I’m a wizard. Mkay, that looks ridiculous… but it’s true.

So, basically, since this is like an autobiography thingamawhatsit, I’ll explain.

I was in my bedroom, on the computer chair, you know the ones that spin round and round and make you sick if you don’t stop after a few hours? Well, I was spinning round and round… had been for ages, and there were voices coming from downstairs, where the front door is. I remember what was said:

“I’ve already been contacted by Heath, he got one for him too, okay? Leave it to me, I’ll just carry on what we’ve been doing.”

“You, Brooke, will give him that letter, or so help us you won’t know what he’ll do when he’s older.”

Other things were said, and there was a lot of loud noises, and in the end my mother entered my room. Without knocking.

“Jake,” she had said. She knows when I spin that it’s important that it finishes. I lifted my feet off of the ground and stared at the ceiling, waiting to come to a complete stop. It just so happened that I stopped more or less in front of her, and I waited to see what she wanted. All my mother did was hold a letter out for me. I took it, and she left.

I span the chair around as I opened the letter, but I stopped trying to make it go when I saw what it said. By the time I finished reading, the chair had stopped, but the room was still spinning. In my head. Because I thought I was going insane… and that is an intense fear of mine, not being in control.

So then later on, I was lying on my bed and my mother came to talk to me. Came to talk at me. She tried to tell me about why she never told me that I was magic before now, stuff about my dad and about how she went to the school I’m going to.

I didn’t want to hear it.

I don’t remember much, just… a lot of shouting and throwing of my textbooks that I learn from. My mother didn’t stay in the room for long, and I don’t remember much, just waking up the next morning in my room which ended up looking like a tip, and my mother about to take me to some place for school shopping. In the end she went ahead and came back to tell me to go. I was glad to go on my own. If I’m about to be forced by my mother to leave what I know… then I’m glad to be leaving the person that doesn’t want me.

One thing is for sure, though… This Hogwarts place had best be good… and it had better feel like home, or I don’t know what I’m going to do.

Part 3: Leaving

September 21st 2056

Jacob Jakers Dale Blackly-Upstead: 3 weeks old

Staring into the cot, Heath tried to drag his eyes away from Jacob’s little face. The kid never did much… just lay there staring. Heath made his decision long ago about Jacob. He was weird. He was 3 weeks old… and weird. Heath couldn’t deal with weird.

“What are you doing?” There came a voice from the doorway of Jacob’s bedroom. Brooke was standing there, eyes showing the signs of tiredness. She had just woken up, having been sleeping on the sofa, and when Heath wasn’t with her, she headed for Jake’s room.

Standing at his full height, which wasn’t very tall, Heath stared his girlfriend in the eye. “Saying goodbye,” he said simply, making his way back to the main room in their flat.

“What?” Brooke asked incredulously. “Where are you going?”

“I’m leaving,” replied Heath, reaching for the bag he’d been keeping behind the sofa. “The kid is weird… strange… I can’t be looking after him like that, I deal with normal.”

Brooke blinked, shocked at the insensitivity of her boyfriend. “He’s… he’s your son! How dare you say such things about him!” she yelled at the man, incensed. She no longer wanted to be with Heath, their relationship had gone stale not long ago. But Jake… he needed a father. “How am I supposed to look after him on my own? Especially if he’s, as you so gently put it, weird,” Brooke snapped, heading through to her bedroom, and rifling through the wardrobe and drawers. She had intended to throw all of Heath’s belongings out on the street, but he had them all. “How long have you been planning this?” she yelled through the flat.

“Long enough, Brooke,” Heath replied, nonchalantly, as he unthreaded the key to the flat from his keyring. “Long enough to make the right plans so I can get far away from you both,” he added, voice now emotionless. Heading for the front door, Heath didn’t look back as he slammed the key down on the table, exit through the door and slammed it shut behind him.

She heard his words. She heard the door. She heard him driving away.

Brooke went through to Jake’s room and stared at the kid.

They were alone, now.

Jacob Jakers Dale Blackly-Upstead: 11 years exactly

Just… WHAT is Dominic Denton’s PROBLEM?!

That stupid, tall… stupid… tall… prefect! Good sweet sandals I… I need to breathe.

Okay… so yeah, I found out about all that wizard mumbo jumbo, yeah? Well I went to that Diagon Alley place to get my school things and stuff… and one of the Prefects for one of the houses… Hufflepuff? Well, yeah, this is the nice one… she helped me out and stuff at first, but we managed to encounter this other prefect. Dominic Denton.

What an arrogant… stuck up… know it all! I mean… he was just totally… GRRRRR! I can’t even remember much of it, I just know I ended up really upset… what a horrible person he is! I’ll be glad if I don’t get into his house.

Well, all things aside I suppose… no, Diagon Alley really was quite a disaster, except from the nice lady in the wand shop. She was nice. I liked her.

But, some stuff happened which was pretty… eww. Like, for instance, someone blew up a bin. A BIN! I MEAN EWWWWW! Seriously, that was disgusting… but then everyone started puking, which was just… ew.

I met some really nice people, actually. Cameron was pretty cool, and he wasn’t crazy like most people I have the misfortune to meet. Plus he is the SAME height as me! Can you believe it?! I am real short, so yeah. And there was this other girl I met… I ended up living with her in fact. Want the short story? Tough.

Basically, my mum wound me up to the point where I couldn’t stay there any longer, and she stays somewhere else a lot, so I’m alone anyway. Yeah, I left, and I went to stay with Tabitha, my friend… but that didn’t work out either, too much arguing.

So… today, my 11th birthday, I am writing this to you late at night, waiting outside kings cross station, so I can leave and go off to Hogwarts.

And like I said… it had better be good.

BanaBatGirl 05-10-2009 09:23 PM

Part 4: Roadkill

Jake: 3 years old...

Brooke didn’t own a car, had never got round to learning how to drive. Well, she didn’t necessarily need to. Walking was way more healthy, right? Plus, it was a nightmare trying to get Jake into any large metal contraption, and the boy would kick and scream and make a right fuss until they got wherever they needed to be, and of course by then, he’d be in no state to carry on.

“C’mon Jake,” Brooke called over her shoulder. Normally she’d have a tight hold of the boy’s hand, but she had her hands literally full with shopping. When she heard no more footsteps, Brooke glanced back over her shoulder. Jake was standing in the middle of the road.

A three year old… in the middle of the road.

Thankfully there were no cars around, as most people were at work, and this was a fairly quiet road at the worst of times, but that didn’t stop Brooke from panicking. “JACOB!” she screamed, dropping the plastic carrier bags of food and dashing out to meet her son, who hadn’t even acknowledged her. When Brooke got to Jake, she looked down and realised what the boy had been looking at. And it wasn’t pretty. Some poor badger had got on the wrong end of a car.

Without a moment’s hesitation, Brooke reached out and took hold of Jake’s hand, guiding him back so they were on the way home again. Stopping briefly to pick up the shopping bags with her free hand, Brooke glanced over at her son. He was doing that staring thing again, where he appeared to zone out.

GAHHHH!!!!! You couldn’t talk to him when he did that. Seriously, it was like talking to a brick wall.

Immediately, as always, Brooke began rearranging her schedule for the rest of the day. Most things always depended on how Jake was… what he was feeling… what side he was facing when he woke up in the morning. What he saw…

“What was that?” came Jake’s small voice from Brooke’s side. He wasn’t looking at her, just staring straight ahead, seemingly uninterested. In fact… Brooke wasn’t too sure if it was him who’d spoken. She carried on walking as she replied.

“A badger.”

“Badgers don’t look like that.”

It was said with such clarity, that most people wouldn’t have believed Jake was only three years old. But he was… his speech was only slightly advanced… but most of the time he was heard in dialogue was… well… when he screamed.

“It’s a different kind of badger,” the woman replied, an uncertain tone edging her voice this time.

“What kind?” Jake asked, still staring straight ahead.

Sighing, Brooke paused in front of a bench. Sure, they weren’t that far from home now… but still. This discussion was sure to be an uncomfortable one… discussing mortality with a three year old. That couldn’t be right, could it?

“It was dead, Jake,” Brooke explained, sitting her son next to her on the bench.

“What’s dead mean?”

And so it went on. From that moment, Jake had an idea of what death was, and things weren’t quite the same. He would never experience a death until he was eleven years old… and yet again, it was more badger road kill.

Jake: Liiiiike 11 years aaaaaand 4 months

Hogwarts. S’alright, I guess. I mean, I don’t have my room, I don’t have my books, I don’t have my computer, I don’t have my own bed, I don’t have my games console and the one game I play on it. Heck, I don’t even have a ball point pen. Do you KNOW how INFURIATING that gets?! Seriously… all these subjects are totally wackadee too.

Oh and hey, get a load of this. I was sorted into the same house as Dominic Denton. Great, huh? Well… actually it ain’t all bad… Kayla Winters is there too. So… I dunno, it’s alright.

BUT there is this total PSYCHO who I have to share a dormitory with. Jack Mosier… he has a twin brother as well, who isn’t as evil, but yeah.

PSYCHO!

Seriously, it’s, what December now? And I already got punched in the eye by Jack… and he got detention and lost points… but like, because he hit this other girl. Nice, huh? Don’t worry about Jake.

Not that I’m bitter.

Anyway… I had my fair share of drama, you know? My friend, Allie… she went and dislocated my shoulder. Nice girl, that Allie…

She was trying to take me to see Professor Morgan… who is okay, but like, we didn’t want to go… I tried to run… she tugged, and then POP! Goes the shoulder. Oh, and that also sucks because I’m on the quidditch team… for my house, that is. I’m the Hufflepuff seeker… with a duff arm.

Greeaaaaatttttt.

Not.

Oh… oh yeah.

I saw this kid die in the library the other day. How messed up is that? My brain hasn’t been working properly since I saw it…

One minute I was watching, the next minute this kid, Set Avis, just slumps on the floor. I totally thought he was messing about, so I went over there and like, poked him. Prodded… maybe shoved him.

But he was dead.

Urgh… makes me shudder just thinking about it… he shared my dormitory too. First year hufflepuff male.

Anyway… I suppose I’d better go now… get some homework done or something.

Cheerio.
