Default Remembering Them - Sa13+

I made a mistake before so I've posted it again.

Okay, so this is basically more of a character story than anything, as it doesn't really have much romance, or much comedy (I'm feeling morbid today), or very much of anything except Teddy Lupin. So, I'm going to say it is -

Genre - Character Story, a tad of Romance when I carry it on. It can go to either of these two, really.

Remembering Them

The last day of the summer. Teddy Lupin used to dislike this day, because it meant he would have to start his lessons with his grandmother again. He had longed to be able to attend a real primary school, even if it was with Muggles, but it was impossible. As little as Teddy wanted to, he couldn't help blaming it on his mother.

Of course it wasn't her fault - she couldn't help being born a rare type of witch called a Metamorphmagus, and then passing on her skills to her only son - but if she hadn't, then Teddy would be able to go to the primary school in the village without having to worry about a sudden spark of emotion sending his hair bright turquoise.

Still, with Teddy having these powers (which he liked, really, because he could scare his Nan, Andromeda), it was safer for him to be at home and to be taught there. Just like both of his parents, if Teddy fell, he would fall hard. Rejection hurt him, and it knocked him down so low it did not feel as though he could ever get up again.

But when most children feel unhappy or left out, they can count on their parents to help them back up again - but not Teddy. Because Teddy's parents had died for him, something that did nothing for his self esteem. In his eyes, his parents died because they didn't want him. No matter how many times his grandmother had tried to tell him that they died because they loved him, and wanted him to lead a happy life, Teddy still felt that death had seemed the easy way out for an unsteady couple who didn't like their newborn son.

And so, after growing up with a dislike for the parents he knew nothing about, Teddy had decided he didn't want to learn about them. But over the years, he had found himself becoming intrigued by some of the pictures on the wall - of a pretty girl around his age, sitting on her father, two teenagers dressed in Quidditch robes (the girl wearing yellow and black for Hufflepuff, the boy with red and gold for Gryffindor), laughing and joking together, of two adults, a young woman and an older man with greying brown hair and a scarred face, gazing at each other on their wedding day, full of love for each other.

And so, tonight was the night before Teddy's first ever day at Hogwarts. He was extremely nervous, despite his godfather, the famous Harry Potter, assuring him that everything was brilliant there. Harry had been disappointed to learn that Teddy didn't wish to know much about his parents, especially Remus.

But now, Teddy realised that he did want to learn. He knew that both of his parents had been students at Hogwarts - not at the same time, of course, because Remus was twelve years old when Tonks was born - and also that their names would be on the large memorial that Harry had described, in the grounds of Hogwarts. Of course, they were buried there too.

And so, with a yearning to know more about Remus and Nymphadora Lupin, he came downstairs from his bedroom on the night of August 31st, with a question for his grandmother.

'Nan?' he asked, sitting down next to Andromeda. 'Can you tell me about - about my Mum and Dad?'. Andromeda looked surprised, but her expression was quickly replaced with a smile, as she thought about how much he resembled her daughter and her son in law. Teddy had Tonks' pale, heart shaped face and dark, twinkling eyes in his natural apppearance, which he usually wore - and he had his father's brown hair, intelligent smile and slightly pointed nose.

'Of course I can, Teddy. Who would you like to hear about first?' Andromeda asked. Teddy considered. There were more pictures of his mother in the house, so Andromeda would know more about Tonks...but Teddy had heard many people mention the name of his father, so he decided he wanted to hear about his father first.

'Dad, please,' Teddy said, snuggling into Andromeda's cardigan. Andromeda smiled, gave him a small kiss on the cheek, and began.

'I met Remus John Lupin, your father, around twelve years ago. I had heard him mentioned plenty of times, by my cousin Sirius, who was one of his best friends at school, but I only saw him in person when Dora introduced him to me. He seemed shy, intelligent and quite calming, which I thought would be good for Tonks, because she was very exciteable and active. He was a good house guest, complimenting my cooking and my jumper, which I was surprised about, because it was a really hideous jumper - but anyway, he was very nice. Dora was besotted with him, which I was pleased about - he had her smiling for the first time in a year, because she'd been feeling very down. And then, a month later, I got a phone call (bless Dora, she may have been raised with a Muggleborn father but she was still holding the receiver the wrong way around), and Dora told me I was invited to their wedding! Well, Ted, your grandfather, and I were ecstatic - we couldn't believe our only daughter was getting married! But the problem was, Remus didn't seem very happy. He adored Tonks, because he had been the one that proposed to her, but everything came out in a conversation with Harry - yes, that Harry - a couple of months later. Remus feared he had made your mother an outcast by marrying her, because prejudice was high against werewolves back then - yes, your father was a werewolf,' Andromeda said, looking at Teddy's gaping mouth. 'Don't look so disgusted, Theodore Remus Lupin, I would have thought you were above petty things like discrimination. But a new problem had arisen by then - at least, it was a problem in your father's eyes. Dora was pregnant with you, and Remus was worried that you would inherit his lycanthropy - the official term for "werewolfism", you know - although there was really only a twenty-five percent chance - you'd either be a lycan, a metamorphmagus, both or neither. Of course, you turned out to be the second one, but Remus was very worried at the time. He considered walking out on Tonks...but after his talk with Harry, he came back to her. And in April, you were born! Remus was over the moon - I'd never seen a face like his when he was told that he had a son. They named Harry as your godfather immediately, and so they had two fantastic months of living with you. And then, there was a battle, the Battle of Hogwarts. And they died fighting, both of them. Fighting for you to have a better life. They wanted to come home and live a peaceful and fun life as a family, have more children and to grow old together. But war is a cruel thing - it has no sympathy for families, for love, for children. Over fifty people were killed - and your parents were two of them. Remus was killed by a man called Antonin Dolohov - but he was killed too. And Dora was murdered by a woman who is unbearably, undescribably evil - and she was also my sister, and your great aunt, Bellatrix Lestrange. She was also killed, but do you know the reason your mother was killed?'. When Teddy shook his head, Andromeda pulled her grandson closer. 'Tonks was murdered because she married your father, and because I married your grandfather. She was intent on making the family tree "pure" again - but she hasn't managed, because you're still here, and that isn't going to change. I won't let it. Now then, your Mum. You know about her marriage and everything now, but her childhood. It was happy, mostly. Of course, she had to endure her aunts bragging about pure blood being the best, and how anyone else deserved to die - yes, she had to listen to that! - and more than a couple of broken bones - through her whole life she shared your clumsiness, see - but yes, it was happy. Before her cousin Sirius went to Azkaban, he would come and see her every day, and he had dozens of nicknames for her - Nymphadorable, because Nymphadora was her first name - even though she despised it, and insisted on Tonks or Dora -, and then there was a month when she refused to be called anything except Nymphanoodle, because she thought it was what Sirius had called her. It was actually Nympha-Doo-Doo, not for any particular reason, but Dora was only three, so we had to call her Nymphanoodle for a month. She loved flying, and Sirius' Christmas present to her when she was two was a tiny toy broomstick, which she adored. She joined the Hufflepuff Quidditch Team at Hogwarts, as their seeker, and they actually won the cup in her seventh year. She was so pleased, as she had been made the Captain that year, and she caught the winning Snitch. Her best friend was a Gryffindor, Charlie Weasley. Yes, the red-head in the picture. She was popular at school, mainly because she was friendly and hard-working and a real livewire, but her Metamorphmagus skills helped too. That wasn't the only place they came in handy - Auror training. Your mother, Teddy Remus, was an Auror, and a very good one at that,'.

Andromeda noticed that her "audience" was falling asleep, his eyes closing every so often, so she stopped. But before she did, she had one last thing to say.

'With a Quidditch Captain and an Auror as your mother and a very brave and friendly Prefect as your father, you'll go far, Teddy Remus Lupin. I promised your parents that if they died, I would make sure you made them proud and remembered them. I'm sure you will - and already have - made them proud of you, so please....remember them....'.

Teddy was now asleep, with dozens of happy thoughts and dreams bouncing around in his head. He most certainly was going to make his parents proud - because he owed it to them.
His favourite people in the world.
His Mum and Dad.

Fifty miles away, Harry lay in his bed, thinking of Teddy. He wondered how the little boy felt. He thought of how Teddy was just like him - losing his parents at such a young age. One thing Teddy did have that Harry hadn't was loving family and friends, from the moment his parents had died. And one thing Harry was eternally grateful for, was the thing that he did have and Teddy didn't. Teddy Lupin and Harry Potter were alike in many ways - but they differed in the fact that Teddy, thankfully, didn't have a lightning bolt shaped scar.

Note: If you'd like to see what happens to Teddy as his life goes on, this fanfiction has become a one-shot, so you should check out "In The Name of Teddy Remus Lupin", which is, like this, an Sa13+.
