Fifth Floor The Ancient Runes classroom can be found along this floor, as well you can take a gander at some fine statues and the famous Weasley swamp.

Default Weasley Swamp

The legendary portable swamp created by Fred and George Weasley was once large enough to consume the entire fifth-floor corridor. Needless to say, this greatly irritated the notorious Dolores Umbridge when there were no instructions on how to remove it and the then teachers didn't seem to mind that it was there. Today a small section of the swamp remains, roped off in tribute of the redheaded twins' historic act of protest.

When you are getting close to this reserved section of the corridor, you will know without question. The remaining swamp still smells like an authentic swamp, look like an authentic swamp, bubbles like an authentic swamp, and will indeed suck you in if you cross over the rope and step in it. Avoid the Weasley swamp with care is the best advice you should heed while on the fifth floor, especially if you're running late to class. While it must have been an impressive and humorous sight back in the mid-90's, just praise Merlin that you don't have to make your way across today.

The swamp was OKAY, except for how bad it smelled. That part was not very okay. But Kinsay was willing to put up with the smell because she was on an important mission today. If it weren't for her friendship with Adam and Lewis, she may have made it a habit to avoid the swamp all together. But not today. Today she was here in the name of friendship... and also swamp creatures. But swamp creatures could be friends too. Like her ducklings!

Kinz quickly looked around the whoooole corridor just to make sure there weren't any professors around, before ducking underneath the ropes and crawling into the swamp, knees first! Just a little bit. She was just on the edge for now, sifting through the murky, muddy water for something nice. Maybe a slug. Or a snail. Or a frog! She wouldn't turn down a snake either, Lewis would probably like a snake. If she saw anything deeper, she'd have to reach for it. A little mud wouldn't hurt, she didn't mind.

And despite the way her hands sunk down into the murky goop, Kiz hadn't yet realized that it was slowly sucking her in. She was in toooootal control of this situation. Besides, she was here for a noble cause. The swamp would hopefully sense that. She had full confidence in her plans. They were usually good ones. Better when Emmerson was involved, but sometimes Kinsay didn't mind executing plans on her own. It just wasn't the preferred method.

Okay this part of the castle was certainly interesting. She didn't realise how murky and .... she didn't have the right word to describe it right in this moment. It was just swampy and icky and weird but also incredibly awesome. If she could find a nose clip to put on her nose to stop herself from breathing in the awful smell, then she probably would prefer it MUCH better.

That being said...It wasn't her favourite part of the castle or least favourite part. It was medium on her list. She'd give the creators props though. After she read the history of why it was created, she thought it was much cooler and creative. It def was something unexpected for sure. If someone had told her that she was going to a school with a castle in it, would she have expected a swamp in it? Absolutely not!

A young girl, a little older than she, caught her attention. Her eyes narrowed as she tried to figure out what POSSIBLY she was doing wading through the waters. Was this the way to get across? Why wasn't she using the rope? "Um... hello. Do you need help?"

Not that she'd be much help at only four foot two AND GROWING!

The swamp had all of Kinsay's attention. It was kind of hard to see anything in it and every time she heard one of the bubbles pop, she thought it was an animal of some kind. Which. Made things very hard. Maybe there were better ways to go about this. She should've brought a net, except... Where would she even get one of those?

If this mission turned out to be a failure (which it wouldn't), she'd find herself a net for next time. Maybe Mr. Kazmi had nets? For, um, for catching things in the sky? It was either that or asking the house elves and no offense, but sometimes the house elves were creepy. Mr. Kazmi was way less creepy, even though he was sometimes creepy too. Most professors were, but it wasn't their fault. Kinsay knew that. They probably had to be creepy to get the job, how else would they keep students in check? HM?

These were the types of questions floating around her head when Kinsay heard someone speaking to her. Um. Usually, Kinz wouldn't accept the help (because she could do things by herself) (strong, independent woman), but with the way this mission was going right now... Help was probably needed. She'd hate to return to Lewis and Adam empty handed. Even if they didn't ask for this. "Kind of," she replied quietly with a small nod, scooting over to make some room for the girl to join her. She'd wave her over, but um. Her hands were a little stuck. That was weird. "Do you think there's snakes in here?" Kiz was hopeful.

Oh? She did need help, did she? Lisa eyed her surroundings looking for something to help pull the other girl out. Maybe brute strength wasn't the best action so maybe she ought to opt for a spell or something to help levitate her... She wasn't entirely sure in her own abilities because what if she hurt the older girl...? Lisa bit her lip and then watched the older girl who looked stuck. She found a rope and tossed it out to the other girl. "Can you grab onto this? Or should I use a spell like...." She drew a blank. Would water work? "Would Augmenti work?" She didn't know how to cast that... She had read about it so she hoped the girl could grab onto the rope with her hands.... "I could give it a go... maybe..."

If not, she may need to find an older student for help on this one.

Did she think there were snakes in here? Lisa wished but she wasn't sure if the other girl would enjoy it. Then again she wagered the chances that this girl may like slime and scale covered creatures cause she was in the literal swamp. It took a certain kind of person to just jump in and just explore in such an environment. Lisa beamed, taking a chance. "I hope SNAKES and LIZARDS but do snakes live in swamps? I know Pascal would love this place!" she cried as she began to make her way towards Kiz.

............. Huh?

Kinz turned to give the younger girl a funny look. Her thick eyebrows were raised up eye and everything. "I'm not trying to get out," she shook her head and sighed quietly. This seemed to happen a lot. People never understood a worthwhile mission unless Kinsay took the time to spell it out for them. It was all very frustrating. "I'm trying to find something for my friends." Two somethings, to be exact. She wasn't sure what the somethings were yet, but when she found them she'd know.

"Me too," Kinz agreed with a tiiiiiiiny grin. The prospect of finding a snake OR lizard was all very exciting. Adam would probably like a lizard, he seemed like the type. Maybe she could find him a nice green one. "They do. Who's Pascal?" Actually, Kinsay wasn't sure that snakes lived in swamps, but it seemed very likely so she was pretty confident in the answer she gave.

And despite the stuckness, Kiz wasn't all too worried. As long as she could move her hands around inside of the muddy swamp (which she could), that was enough. Maybe the lizards were hiding underneath all the dirt. Sometimes animals were shy. Kiz could relate.

Cue absolute deadpan expression.
Error 401....
Lisa Nam not found.

She didn’t want to get out there but she looked stuck?? She shook her head momentarily, wondering who would just be in the swamp like that, but then decided to try to understand the reasoning behind the girl leaping in. “Oh.” She paused, trying to figure out what to say. She scrunched up her nose before continuing but then stopped when Kinsay explained why she was in there. Ohhhhhhh. That made more sense. “Gotcha.... I thought you may have been stuck cause swamps are marshy and mushy and.... yeah... sticky. Or so I watched on a documentary last year at home...” She shrugged her shoulders. She hadn’t paid much attention to the habitat portion of the show... she was more interested in the lizards and creatures and WHERE it was so SHE could see it one day.

Small girl had big plans and big dreams.

Sooooooo what are you looking for? Do you need help?” Lisa didn’t mind jumping in there too if the other girl needed it buuuuut she’d have to go get her trusty gum boots for this mission. In those bright pink rubber boots, the possibilities were endless. Endless, I tell you!

The tiiiny grin was good. At least this girl could smile. Positives. Oh and now she had asked about Pascal. Lisa was always more than happy to tell people about Pascal. “He’s my handsome pet chameleon!! He’s so cool. Do you have a pet?

Kinsay moved further into the swamp, on all fours, of course. If any creatures were to be living inside, they'd probably be somewhere in the middle, rather than on the edge where lot of people would walk by and disturb their peace. At least that's what Kinsay would do if she lived in a swamp. Sometimes the Gryffindor Common Room felt like a swamp. It was always musty in there; she blamed the boys. In any case, she didn't understand the younger girl's deadpan expression and decided to pay it no mind. First years were easily confused. She had met enough of them last term to know as much. Except Kinsay wasn't easily confused when she was a first year - there's always exceptions to the rules and maybe she was one of those.

Her reply to all the swamp talk was immediate. "I know." And simple. She knew enough about swamps to know they were mushy and sticky. It was preeeetty obvious. Either way, she wasn't terribly concerned about the swampy consistency. She was big worried about finding things and that was just about it! So she continued to dig her hands around all the mushy dirt.

"Um. Something friendly," she replied simply, not knowing exactly what it was she was looking for yet. "And you can help if you want. It feels good in here." Very swampy. Kinsay would definitely be taking a shower afterwards, but for now... She was a happy Kiz. Hopefully once she found a snake or two for Lewis and Adam, they'd be happy too. It was the least she could do for her friends.

"Oh. We have a dog called Ogden, but he's not mine. He's my family's and he's so old and so lazy." So he didn't really count. "And six ducklings - Zack, Jack, Mac, Dac, Quack, and George!" Except she couldn't bring them to Hogwarts, which was really sad. "My boyfriend, Matty, has a blue tongued Skink named Cricket." Kinsay alwaaaaaays giggled when she thought about him.

Remy walked around the castle for a while trying to think of places to put her pumpkins for Transfiguration, especially for her sad pumpkin. It had to be somewhere discreet so no one would see it. Perfect - the Weasley Swamp. It would fit right in here.

URGGGHH - it stank here.

The Gryffindor quickly tiptoed closer to it, as if she wasn't supposed to be here, or something. She popped her sad pumpkin under the rope, being careful not to touch the swamp with her hands.

There - it looked perfect here. Remy beamed and then skipped off to find a place for her rainbow pumpkin. Somewhere really obvious - maybe the Great Hall.

She still wore the deadpan expression as she looked at Kinsay. Lisa was completely unsure what the girl was onto and just nodded. Uh huh...... Lisa did notice that the older girl didn’t seem too bothered by the swamp and being physically in the swamp. Aaand her eyebrows raised when the older girl said the swamp felt good. Good wasn’t a word that she’d used for it.... “Good but stinky....” she commented as she walked a little further towards the swamp. She sat at the edge, watching the murky swampy-ness with narrowed eyes.

SHE HAD SIX DUCKLINGS?!?

Lisa’s family had a family dog too. Mr. Bennett was his name. Benny for short. And then Noah’s cat, Jinx, had become a quick family favourite after Noah had brought her home after his first trip to the menagerie. As much as Lisa liked dogs and cats, she had always found her drawn to different types of creatures like lizards and birds. They were MUCH more interesting though she did have a soft spot for goldendoodles and huskies. DUCKS sounded VERY cool so she had to hear more! “Ducklings! WOW! Where did you get them from?” she asked with wide, curious eyes. She wanted to hear all about these ducklings.

Ohohoho.... another mention fo a special friend!! First was Ash, then Claudine, and now Kinsay. “Does Matty go to Hogwarts?” AND DID EVERYONE HAVE A SPECIAL FRIEND? Lisa gulped as an awful thought hit her. Oh dear Merlin. What if V and Daniel were “special” friends one day? She shuddered at the thought. That very thought was what got her to hop into the swamp and make her way over to Kinsey.

"True." The swamp was stinky, yes, but Kinsay didn't mind too much. It was a small price to pay for what she was here to accomplish. And if she found a snake inside the swamp, then it'd all be well worth it. That's what she kept telling herself, at least. So long as she could find something to gift Adam and Lewis, the stink would be a temporary sac
sacrifice in the name of friendship.

It also helped that Lisa was keeping her distracted from all the stinky swamp smells. Talking to people she didn't know well was usually such a chore, but talking about her ducks was easy (even though it did make her a little bit sad). "They were at the river by my house," she explained. "All abandoned, without a mum!" That's why Kinsay had to take them under her wing. They were obviously orphaned. They needed her.

Something else she could talk about loads and loads? Her friends. "Mhm, he's a third year too. But he's in Slytherin." Come to think of it, a lot of her friends were in Slytherin House. It made things terribly inconvenient that they were all so far away. If Kinsay could reconstruct the castle she'd put Slytherin on the seventh floor too, next to Gryffindor and Ravenclaw. Then all her people would be in the same place.

Seeing Lisa jump into the murky swamp water, Kiz flashed her a brief smile. Didn't it feel so nice?

The swamp felt much better than thinking about Daniel and V being “special” friends? Surely the very world as she knew it would explode! And she didn’t want to be around for the world to be set on fire. So she waded over to Kinsay, holding her breath as she moved closer and ignoring how gross her clothes were going to be. She was embracing the unknown and trying something that she’d never do.

Abandoned? Without a mum?!” repeated Lisa before adding her own two cents. “HOW AWFUL!” Lisa did wonder how they ended up all by themselves. Maybe the mother duck was hit by a car or eaten by a terrible cat. At least the ducklings had found Kinsay. “I’m glad the ducklings found you. Are you their new mama Duck?” she asked, tilting her head at the older girl.

Speaking of caring for ducks as a mama duck, Lisa did have a question for Kinsay. And it was a serious one. “What do you feed ducklings by the way? Is it worms and fish? And don’t mother ducks or birds at least have to chew the food to make it soft enough for the babies to eat.” Lisa scrunched her nose. “Did you have to chew the ‘food’ yourself and then feed them?

"Mhm, they were orphans." Could Lisa BELIEVE that?! It was so tragic. Kinsay nodded sadly. So it really was a good thing that she found them. Kiz was glad that Lisa thought so too. "Me too," she agreed. "Yup, we had so much fun together." They were such good listeners and never told her she was incessant or got mad at her when she needed to cry. Her ducklings were so patient and gentle and everything good.

Hopefully they were doing okay with Tavie. Kiz made a mental note to write them a letter when she got back to the common room and showered all the goopy swamp mess away. They'd have loved the swamp, she was sure of it.

The ducklings loved lots of things. Especially feeding time, so Kizzy grinned big when Lisa asked about it. "I mashed up pears and bananas for them at first when they were real little, but when they grew a little bigger I started feeding them veggies too and sweet corn." They especially liked kale. Kins liked to sneak it from the fridge whenever her parents weren't looking. So in short, no. She did not have to chew the food for them. She just had to prepare it special at first.

"Do you see any swamp creatures yet?" Because as far as Kinsay could tell, this swamp was pretty much a dead-zone. Which .... was a real shame because she REALLY needed to find something for her friends.

She couldn’t imagine being orphaned.
Well… she could.

But it was an awful thing to imagine or wish upon another person. She supposed. A storyline popped it’s way into her mind and she could visually see the scene. Kinsay and her were living at an orphanage happy as clams and all that jazz. And of course, Emerson and Jasper were there. And Daniel and V fighting in the corner with Alfie simply shaking his head at the two. Serena and Remy were plotting away with Ollie in tow. And Nem was just Nem… looking out the window like Lisa often found him. Somehow Schmoe and Flamsteed were the two caretakers. All of a sudden one day, Headmaster Trent appeared telling the children he was here with some news from the capital. Then tragedy struck! Headmaster Trent was not who he claimed to be… instead he was the Sorcerer Assassin sent by the evil Overlord (who happened to be Kinsay and Lisa’s father- somehow they were related- it was a stretch but the plot was too gripping). Mamie came to help her. She was like this sorceress and Ash was beside her. Ash could control FIRE. And then the Flamsteed twins were with Quinn and Lisa STILL couldn’t tell them apart. And Noah was flirting with Misa…. And Lisa was confused. But then there was a fight and she had to flee with Scarlett Mordaunt of all people until they met up with their friends. Then the group of students had to make it back home and…….and Jasper and V were engaged and Lisa was so confused and then HE OFFERED HER HIS JACKET…. And and…

She sat down in the swamp, fully submerging herself in the muddy water as she sighed LOUDLY and dramatically. “Sorry…” she said as an apology more to V than anyone else but V wasn’t here. And Lisa hadn’t done anything wrong save be jealous of two of her friends…. Lisa hadn’t realized that she’d gotten carried away with the fairies at that point in time until she heard the pause. Oops.

She flushed pink and nodded when she heard Kinsay. She assumed that Kinsay was referring to the ducklings. Remaining quiet, she continued to listen. So the ducklings ate fruit and veggies. “Do they have a favourite food?” Mashed up bananas didn’t sound appetizing to her but she knew babies liked them. The mushy food eliminated the need for Kinsay to mash up their dinner. “Gotcha… more sanitary then…” And less cooties.

No..” sighed Lisa before she turned to the right and saw the water move a few yards away from her. “MAYBE OVER THERE WHERE THE WATER IS MOVING!” she suddenly blurted out arms a flailing (not caring if she sprayed muddy water EVERYWHERE).

Please don’t be a mouse!!!!!

While Lisa was using her vivid imagination, Kinz was on the hunt for swamp creatures - preferably one good enough for Adam. The goal was to find something for both Adam and Lewis, but with the luck they were having at the moment, it seemed unlikely that she'd find TWO swamp creatures. Even one seemed like a stretch at this point. Unaware of Lisa's inner turmoil, Kiz only looked back over when she apologized.

.....? "You don't have to be sorry," she replied naively, thinking maybe Lisa felt bad that they hadn't found anything yet.

As for faaaavorites, Kiz nodded lots. They did have a favorite. Kinz had figured it out real early on because she was a responsible duckling momma. "They like sweet corn the best." Except not when the corn was frozen. That made things a little difficult sometimes. Meant Kiz had to keep them entertained while the corn thawed enough. Man. She really, really missed her ducklings. So much.

She would have voiced this had it not been for Lisa's sudden movements. MeeEEEEEP! Kinz jumped into action immediately, pouncing towards the spot with the moving water and subsequently splashing muddy swap water EVERYWHERE in the process. "GOT IT!" And in her fist, she held...
A tail?

Where was the rest of the lizard? "............" Uh. "Oops.

She flushed when she had gotten a response from Kinsay on her ‘sorry’. Lisa didn’t question it. She kept on rolling with it.

Sweet corn? Ooh. That sounded good. Lisa LOVED sweet corn. “Thats one of my fave veggies too! They have good taste!” smiled Lisa. Seriously she had to meet these ducklings… maybe she could pretend to be a duckling and wait no- better yet she could TRANSFORM into one and then have Kinsay take care of her for the rest of her days. That sounded just ducky to her.

Her arms were stained a darker brown with the muddy water as she splashed. The house elves would HAAAATE her now for getting her uniform all muddy and yucky. She made a note to clean her own uniform later or at least pre-clean it.

But anyway- Kinsay had something and Lisa wanted to see what it was. She walk-swam over to her because the swamp was getting a little deeper. She squealed when she saw that it was just the tail. “Did we just….. ” She blurted before pausing and coaching herself to be logical. Lizards lost their tails all the time as a flight tactic. They probably just have the thing a poor fright. “I think we scared that lizard….” She gasped. She loved lizards. What if this had happened to HER PASCAL. Panic set in.

Oh no! Maybe he’s hurt. We have to find him!!!

Kins thought nothing more of the apology, instead shifting her attention to the topic of corn. "Mine too," she agreed with a small smile. If Lisa did turn herself into a duck, Kinz would take the BEST care of her. Kizzy was such a good mother, she had all the practice from last summer to prove it!

If only she were as good at catching lizards.

........ "Um." She stared at the tail with wide eyes, dangling it in front of her face. This was so weird. She couldn't give Adam a TAIL! Where was the rest of the lizard??? Her whole demeanor shifted to a frantic sort of way, only heightening when Lisa suggested the lizard was maybe HURT.

O___________O

This had not gone according to plan at all whatsoever. "We have to!" She agreed, plugging her nose and digging through the muddy swamp liked her life depended on it. "Lizard... Liiiiiizaaaaard? Where are you???" This was so bad. Did Lisa know how bad this was? It was really, really bad. Kins was freaking out.

Default for natethegreat

Ash never said it out loud, but the Weasley Swamp was one of her favorite places at Hogwarts. It was an obstacle, and nothing more. And yet, to her it symbolized defiance. It was a swamp that only existed because a couple of children wanted to annoy someone. It only remained in order to annoy people. And it was still there. That was something Ash could respect. So she hung out here a lot, claiming it was because she 'wanted to be alone' or 'needed inspiration for more art.' Nah. She just appreciated the place. It was cool.

On this particular day, Ash was getting inspiration for her art. She scanned the swamp, taking in every detail, trying to capture the moment in her brain. She ran her fingers through her hair, careful not to pull it and give herself a flashback.

This was peaceful, wasn't it? Just a girl and her mind and a swamp. And art and history and memories. All just chilling. Nobody was dying, nobody was fighting, there was nobody trying to hurt someone else. One girl, and one swamp, and one moment.

It was calm. Real calm. Not the false kind of calm that gave her a headache and made her feel sick and panicky. Just calm. For now, anyway.

The eye of the storm?

The eye of the storm?
Ahhh yes, the Weasley Swamp. A place of notoriety, infamy, and by far, one of the greatest pranks the twins have ever concocted while spending their time here at Hogwarts. It was rather extraordinary that they managed to fit a full swamp inside the castle itself, on the fifth floor of all places, but that was the amazing part about magic; you could do pretty much anything that you had set your mind to. Just like a moth to a flame, Kayne was lured to the place by a siren song shrouded in mysterious and mischievous intention. Anything that caused some form of commotion had the fourth year's name written all over it.

A few minutes into his little stroll through the bog, Kayne had come across a girl about his age. Maybe she was up for a little bit of mischief too perhaps? Just the pure curiosity of what brought this other person here intrigued Kayne. However, he wanted to have some fun with his greeting. Just walking up to her like a normal person was just way too dull for his taste. So, a plan came to his mind. It wasn't gonna be anything groundbreaking or revolutionary, but still this plan was a classic; he decided he would attempt to sneak up and startle the girl for a good laugh.

So, plan in mind, he took off his sneakers to make his movements as silent as possible. Sneakily, Kayne snaked his way behind the other student, and stood there for a second, just to revel in what would soon become a hilarious situation. Also, because anyone who knows anything about scaring someone knows you have to wait for the perfect moment. That moment when you know the other person is completely unaware of what's about to happen. After that brief pause, that's when he made his move.

"Whatcha doing here?" Kayne exclaimed, standing only about 3 feet behind her.

Everyone knew that the eye of the storm was the middle. Sure, it was calm, but it was surrounded on all sides by storm. High waves. High winds. Etcetera.

Maybe that was a good analogy.

It was lucky that Ash was *actually* calm today. Any other version of her might have done regrettable things in this moment without even... thinking. But the calm she had been feeling gave her a brief moment to think. So Ash did NOT hit the dude behind her in the face with the sharp part of her elbow. Instead, she paused. An inch away from doing that. Thank goodness for that split second she had to register what was going on.

She moved her elbow away.
She took a step back.
She raised one eyebrow, trying to resume being calm despite the anger she was feeling.

"Rude to try and sneak up on people, wouldn't you agree?" Especially after what had happened. Ash crossed her arms, as if expecting an explanation. "I'm getting inspiration for art." And she was doing it all by herself, and had been feeling much better before he showed up. But alas, Ash was not the type of person to tell people where they could or could not hang out (that would be hypocritical). It seemed she'd just have to deal with a very inconsiderate person for a while. But she would not start screaming. She would not fight anyone. She would not be passive-aggressive. SHE WAS CALM. And she was going to act calm. Nobody would ruin her composure (RIP to her mood tho).

One minute, Kayne was expecting to cackle hoping to see her jump in fright, the next, the back of her elbow is an inch away from his face. It was a good thing that she didn't actually hit him, whether it would have been accidental or on purpose, Kayne's skin was simply way too nice to be bruised like that. He was impressed though with how the stranger kept their composure. Most people would have definitely flipped out, or screamed, or something along those lines. But she was different. Kayne liked that.

"Well that all depends on what you think is rude." Kayne replied, a sly little smirk making it's way across his face. He moved his hands through his mullet, before shaking it a bit. Trying to stifle his laughter, he said "Ah, yes. Art inspiration. Gotta love it." Brows now also raised in even more curiosity now though. A swamp was a weird inspiration for art, but hey. Who was he too judge? Art is in the eyes of the beholder after all.

Drawing his wand, he pointed at his shoes on the ground and confidently casted "Accio." Thankfully, one of his boots made it's way to his hand. The other one...not so much. Forgetting he only had one free hand, the other one went past him and right into...

The swamp...

Welp...that's karma I guess.

Gaze turning back and forth from the shoe, the girl, and the swamp, Kayne couldn't help but burst out in laughter now. "Well, shoot. This is really awkward now." Oh dear, was the fourth year really about to do what he was thinking of doing. Hopefully, no. However, how deep could that swamp be? "The name's Kayne by the way, care to go for a swim to help me find my other boot..." Waiting for her response, he began to set his other shoe on the ground, next to them this time so that way he wouldn't make that same mistake again.

Ash was also glad that she hadn't hit this dude (whoever he was, anyway). While she thought she could maybe win in a fight with him, she didn't want trouble. She was just planning on chilling. Not getting detention, or making enemies, or anything like that. She had PRIORITIES.

And then her other eyebrow went up. "Well I happen to think it's rude." It was a quiet warning, easy to miss. One attempt to sneak up on her was a mistake. Two was a sign of cruelty. Mistakes could be forgiven. Cruelty couldn't.

There was palpable tension in the air, pressing in on her and making it hard to breathe. She tugged at her collar, as if it was too tight. Her cheeks got redder and her neck got paler. And the only thing that diffused the tension that she felt, made it go away, was the stranger throwing his shoe into the swamp. She could have reached out and caught it. She had two free hands. Oops.

Ash snorted. Idiot.

"I'm not particularly inclined to help, but if you can't find it after a few minutes I can look." She did not mention that she had seen where it landed, her eye tracking the shoe as it flew through the air like a football. He had snuck up on her- it was his fault. She'd help him once she got bored, but for now, she'd like to have a laugh at his expense. It was only fair.

"I'm Ash, if you wanted to know." Everything was in harmony. He had said his name, she had said hers. He had laughed at her, now she would laugh at him.

This girl just kept on getting more and more interesting. Kayne respected people who stood up for themselves, and while sometimes it ruined his fun a bit, it still meant that most of the time they can be an extremely fierce friend to have. Which is just what he needed. But, wait a second...was...was she blushing...? That was hilarious to him. I really hope she doesn't think this is some weird flirty type of thing Kayne had thought to himself. If she did though, that would give Kayne the perfect opportunity to riff off of that.

Regardless, the more time Kayne spent on the path, the longer his boot was wading in some nasty swamp water. I'm gonna need like 500 showers after this, but oh well. He thought. As the girl responded, politely declining his request, Kayne shrugged. "Suit yourself then." Taking off his socks he sort of lazily pointed at the single shoe now left next to them, and looked up at Ash. "Would you at least do the honors of watching over my other shoe Queen Ash, lover of swamp art?" To add a bit of flair and dramatics, he did an over the top bow towards her. Regardless of what her answer was though, the Slytherin boy was expecting, and actually kind of hoping, that she might also try to pull a little bit of shenanigans while he took a dip in the swamp.

Thankfully, Kayne was pretty athletic so moving around through the muck wouldn't be too hard. It was just holding his breath underwater that was gonna be the tricky part. This is something where the bubble head charm would do all the right tricks right now, but unfortunately, he didn't know it. So, that was gonna be something to try to work around.

Sighing, he turned to Ash. "Did you at least see where it went." And this is the moment that Kayne pulled out his puppy dog eyes. Hopefully, this way Kayne could at least get that much information out of the fellow student. He would try all his little cunning maneuvers to attempt to gain some knowledge as to where his shoe went. If not, then yikes. The two, well, Kayne at least, could be there for a while. The swamp was still a decent size after all.

Oh no. Ash wasn't blushing because he was flirting(?) with her (she wouldn't have noticed if he was, and she wasn't even single), she was turning red because he was trying to scare her. And she didn't LIKE being scared!!! Important distinction between blushing and turning red.

She slid down the wall into a sitting position on the edge of the swamp. Queen Ash, lover of swamp art. Queen Ash, destroyer of worlds. Queen Ash, the notorious surfer and arsonist. Queen Ash, a broken thirteen-year-old sitting next to a swamp and trying to stay sane. Queen Ash, a volatile but somehow predictable human being.

She was glad she said no. Drawing a swamp? Sure. Wading through a swamp trying to find somebody else's shoe that they had lost while being stupid? No thanks.

"I'll watch your shoe." Ash smiled. She had a nice smile, at least when it was genuine. This time, it was genuine, although it may have been hiding something. Namely, that while she would faithfully watch his shoe and make sure it didn't end up in the swamp, she wasn't above levitating it out of his reach when he came back. haha.

Ash laughed. She had a rough laugh. It spilled out messily into the silence of the universe. "I saw where it went." She debated whether to tell him or not, but kindness won out in the end. "It's over there." She pointed directly at the spot. Not far out, in a murky patch where light met darkness, there was a little ripple. Movement of the water. That was where the shoe went.

Ash thought about Kayne as she waited for him to get his shoe or whatever. She compiled a list in her brain, listing out pros and cons of being his friend until she decided that they could be good friends. She folded up the imaginary paper the list was on and filed it away in an imaginary filing cabinet of conscious, tolerable, not-painful thoughts. It was a very small filing cabinet.

Ash watched Kayne amusedly. She would like to see him have to wade through a swamp in punishment for scaring her. Yes please. Bonus points if he narrated getting his shoe. Extra bonus points if he tripped.

Perfect. So Ash did have a soft spot after all. This was perfect for Kayne. Not because he was gonna exploit it, but simply due to the fact that he didn't really like people who were so similar to him that they could be twins. Mainly, cocky people because he was the best (obviously) and other people who were also mischievous 24/7 because that was his job. And no one stole Kayne's thunder. Absolutely, no one.

"A thousand thanks, your highness." He stated with yet another, even more over dramatic bow.

Kayne's eyes scanned the area until it had reached the spot that Ash had pointed out to him. Low and behold, there was a slight ripple that could be vaguely seen. And it was in this moment, that Kayne was truly grateful for a few things.

First, was the fact that he didn't have nails painted this day. Cause he wouldn't have wanted to get murky swamp water on his nails. He hardly wanted to get it on his basically flawless skin, let alone something that he held more close to him than that. Which, is saying a lot, because Kayne cared a lot about his skin. There hasn't been a day in his life that he had experienced acne problems or blackheads or other blemishes like that. Not even like that awkward stubble that some guys get around this age.

Secondly, the area where his boot went under the water wasn't too far off from the edge. This was good in case he had to make a mad dash back out of the water because he wasn't exactly too sure on whether or not he was allowed to go in or not. I mean, surely a professor would still be at least somewhat understanding, right? It's not like he wanted to go in. It's because he couldn't just leave his shoe in there even though he had several other pairs.

Lastly, and most importantly, Kayne was thankful that it wasn't in an area of complete and total darkness. That would have been the only thing that would have kept him out of this water from retrieving his other boot. Due to an incident when he was younger where he accidentally got locked in his friends basement during a game of hide and seek when the power was out, Kayne was now afraid of...you guessed it...the dark.

"Alright, it's show time." The young troublemaker said in his cheesiest action movie narrator voice. "Can this totally awesome Slytherin best the Bayou Princess, or will his shoe be lost in her territory forever?" Dramatic pause for some flair. "Who knows." Before stepping into the swamp, Kayne started to make guitar noises to this really old song called Bad to the Bone. Then, with his best slow-mo walk, he made his way in. Even on the edge of the swamp though, the water still went up to his thighs. Hopefully, it wouldn't go too much deeper.
