Default Boris the Bewildered

Not far from the entrance of the fifth-floor corridor stands a statue of Boris the Bewildered. Even though there is a statue present in dedication to the man, not much is known about him these days. Just by looking at his expression, it appears that he is either very lost or someone just Confunded him. Though, perhaps, this observation will not come as a surprise to you. After all, the old man is wearing his gloves on the wrong hands.

Hopefully you are faring significantly better than the statue standing before you. In general the statue is used as a landmark for prefects and Quidditch captains, serving as a gentle reminder that their exclusive bathroom is just a few doors down. If you are not a student leader, however, the statue might be viewed as yet another of those silly things that reside inside the castle and be deemed as something not worth investigating further. Though, if you ever need a casual meeting place, Boris will always be there to help you out even if he hasn't got a clue who you even are.

Nancy wasn't sure why she'd decided to sit at this statue and do her homework. Maybe it's just because there was no one else around, so it seemed as good a place as any to set up camp and get some work done in peace and quiet. Plus, she hadn't had a chance to really sit here and examine this statue yet. Why did they call him Boris the Bewildered? Sure, he clearly was confused, with his gloves on the wrong hands and all that, but he looked more...thoughtful to Nancy.

Not confused or bewildered. Just like he was thinking. It wasn't nice to assume someone was confused just because their face looked like that when they were deep in thought!

Hmmm. She made a mental note to read more on him when she got a chance. Maybe she'd ask Moe about it. That seemed like something he'd know about.

Why was Nora roaming around near the fifth floor corridor? It was for no other reason than she was just on her way up. The nearby statue was pretty much lost to her, as she really had nothing on her mind but getting back to the common room to relax after a long day of classes. It was the person she caught sight of out of the corner of her eye that got her attention. "Nancy!" she said, looking down and giving her fellow firstie a smile. Nancy was one of the very first people Nora had met in the magical world, and she was still bummed about the fact they hadn't ended up in the same house.

She noticed Nancy was doing her homework, so she guessed she wouldn't stick around for too much longer. Anybody doing their homework next to a statue in a quiet part of the castle was probably just wanting to be left alone. "You have way more dedication than I do. I'm avoiding homework like the plague right now," she commented. She wasn't even sure she really understood what the plague was. She'd just heard a lot of people use that phrase before. Nora made good grades, but homework after hours just wasn't her thing. She sat down next to her friend, figuring she'd stay for just a little bit.

Nancy looked up as someone called out to her and grinned when she saw it was Nora. She laughed and looked down at her homework with a shrug. "Well, it has to get done at some point and I didn't want to fight for a table in the library, so..." she explained as she trailed off with a chuckle. She scooted over to make some room by the statue, in case she wanted to sit with her.

"Oh, your common room is around here, isn't it?" she asked. Gryffindor was up near the fat lady portrait, if she recalled - it was the one house she wasn't super sure on, just because she hadn't had any family there yet to tell her all about the common room and all that jazz.

Nora just shrugged along with Nancy. Homework was something Nora had to get better at. She always managed to turn it in on time but she only did it once she had a mountain of it all due at the last minute. There was probably something she should be working on right this minute, come to think about it. She pushed that thought out of her mind, though.

"Well, sort of," she said, answering Nancy's question about her common room. "It's two floors up. When I first got here and heard I'd be living on the seventh floor...and that my only option was to walk up there, I thought they were joking. Turns out they were most definitely not." In this aspect, she envied the Slytherins and Hufflepuffs.

"So, how's your school year going?" she asked. Nancy, like Nora, was a first year after all. "I'm...somewhat used to this place now. I mean, on a scale of one to ten, I've made it to a three." She laughed. It was true, but it was still progress, which was saying a lot.

"How ELSE would you get up there?" Nancy asked, blinking at her in confusion. Surely Nora hadn't expected to FLY up there? She just smiled at her and tried to give her an encouraging look. "You'll get used to it! My brother is Ravenclaw and he said he had to adjust to climbing all those stairs too," she assured her.

"Pretty good. I think, at least. I seem to be doing well in classes," she said with a shrug. "And a three is good! That's progress!" she beamed at her. "I bet we'll get you to a ten by the end of the year! If not...at LEAST an eight!"

"What's your favorite class?" she asked, truly wondering what it must be like to be in an all-magic curriculum after having been in muggle school all her life. She knew they mostly focused on all the basics - maths, science, geography, that kind of stuff. A far cry from what they were learning day to day NOW.

Nora blinked in a half-confused, half-shocked kind of way. "Please don't tell me elevators are only a muggle thing?" she replied. Honestly, taking stairs seemed like such an ancient thing to do. When were elevators invented anyway? "In the muggle world, we really only took the stairs if we needed a fire exit or something." Trekking up seven floors of stairs had been unheard of, but yet here she was.

She laughed when Nancy congratulated her for 'being at a three'. "I hope so. An 8 would be a dream at this point," she commented. "I think the worst part of it is having no background about magic at all. I mean, nobody's told me anything about, well everything." Muggleborns seemed few and far between here. At least, that'd been what she experienced.

A few silent seconds passed as she thought about her favorite class. "I think right now it's Charms. That might change later, but waving a wand and having actual things happen is surreal. To be honest, that kind of thing is what muggle kids do when they play make-believe," she said. She'd done it when she was little. "And that's what I've thought all this was up until now." She didn't mean that in a bad way. It was just how she'd experienced magic for the very first time.

Elevators?

Fire exits?

Nora may as well have been speaking another language.

That was until she realized..."OH! You mean lifts! Yeah, we have those, but not here. Mostly in the Ministry and the newer buildings," she explained. "Hogwarts is like, SUPER old. Over a thousand years at least," she added. Her gran would have known the exact date, of course, but she wasn't nearly as good as history as her grandmother. Or her father, for that matter.

"I can't imagine how that would be," Nancy admitted with a small frown when Nora told her how it felt to be in her shoes. A completely new world, that you had no knowledge on, and no guidance on WHERE to start with it all? It sounded like a nightmare, honestly. "Well if you have any questions, ever, about anything, you know you can ask me!" she said with a grin. "I'd be happy to help."

It was true. She was sure if she told her brother to look out for her too, he would, because he was nice like that. Not Joseph, Moritz, of course.

"I like Charms too! And Defense. I think it's cool learning about dark magic - and how to counter it," she explained, because she realized that might make her sound like she LIKED dark magic and wanted to TRY it which she definitely didn't.
