SPOILER!!: Simon and Mammy

The redhead appeared to simply listen to the conversation.

Now to play the 'It's his job card" again or at least try and act like a normal employee. "Simply observing the room for a moment." Yeah...that was more casual. "I'm Simon by the way." He had been given there names, Margaret and Hazel, but he hadn't been sure he had given his own in return. And surely last names didn't matter, at least to him. Pay no attention to the man supposedly a double agent.

He WAS in the MLE right? That... would be super awkward if he wasn't.

Hazel smiled back at her wife before grinning at Simon a little as if to say, ‘Eh, you know Mammy… what can you do.’ Or, at least… she assumed they knew each other but maybe they didn’t. Hmm. Interesting, though it WAS Mammy, so she was likely bored and trying to lighten up her day. At least she would be there to smooth things over if needed… as always. Though she wasn’t as good at it as Boo was… Boo could apologise for anything with a single look.

”It’s nice to meet you, Simon.” She smiled wide at the man. ”Oh, are you in the DMLE?” She asked, trying to remember his face from the last time that she was here. She likely would remember him better if she tried, but really she had been at University for too long to remember faces that she had only seen in passing before that. Sorry, Simon. ”Which division?” She asked… ‘cause y’know. Manners.

SPOILER!!: Rhydian

Rhydian's grin was unrestrained as the woman gave him what was possibly the best response to his question. Better than he could have even imagined. And he could imagine quite a bit. It seemed, he had found an intelligent woman.

Flipping the card about in his fingers, he held it out to her. "You can add that to the bottom, right under 'spaghetti or linguine?'."

Which unsurprisingly followed under other questions including the infamous 'cone or bowl?', fork or dessert fork?, 'sunhat or fedora?', 'why do people like cats?' and his absolute favorite, 'why did the chicken cross the road?'.

While she was doing that, he was just going to slip the card she was holding out of her hand, and start adding yet more attractive prompts. Quill was halfway to parchment when her next words drew his head up with a curious start. He was whose now? The man beside her, who presumably she was talking too, didn't much help. Attached where now?

"Uhhhhhh......." It was an unpleasant noise, highly undignified and with no food or drink in hand or mouth to give excuse to it. But it did come from him, even though he checked about to see if it might have just been someone else.

Upon his glancing about, he did happen to notice the man that had saved him from his rather embarrassing shoes-on-hands predicament during his first few days at the office. A man, he realized, he would have to repay in due course. Sometime, when he wasn't caught up in the confusing web of conversation that had started at his table.

His gaze flitted around in around of him as he looked between the two women. It was then that he spotted the second newest YATI whom he had met on the younger man's first day. Their eyes briefly met as Rhydian looked his way and Simon briefly inclined his head in a sign of acknowledgement. Plenty of time for him and his fellow department member to catch up if they so chose later on.

Simon half chuckled at the woman's sigh of relief. Was she that concerned that he wasn't doing a decent bit of mingling at this welcome shindig. "Unfortunately yes...we're still technically on the clock." Well maybe not ALL MLERs that were here. Not that he had seen many that fit that description besides his charges. He and the YATI were working though of course.

He watched the silent look of Hazel to Margaret and then to him, the younger man trying to read just what message was supposed to be passed. The security man didn't know the returning woman well enough to get a ready meaning. "Nice to meet you as well" Simon returned with a nod. "Yes I am. Security." The man briefly catching himself thinking auror mixed in as well.

With a slight feeling of dread, Gabby prepared herself for what would probably be the worst part of the day: small talk.

It wasn't that she had a problem with lunch - especially if it was Italian food - she just hated mindless chatter. If she was going to associate with anyone, give her healthy conversation any day because the other kind was just plain booooooring.

Grabbing a sandwich, some salad, and a drink she headed over to one of the tables at random. Since the only person she knew was Lucia it didn't really make much of a difference where she sat. At least there was only one person sitting here.

Now could she eat and not have to deal with small talk?

Deliah gave the woman who sat at her table a small smile and saw the envelope with conversation starters but she was just too shy to start off a conversation

Today was all about his employees, and it was his duty to make sure each and every one of them was AWARE of that fact, was it not? Never mind that his wee little old man bones were exhausted, despite the fact that his wheelchair had him sitting nonstop. He had work to do!

It was with this thought in mind that he ladled a tiny pile of fruit onto his plate, snagged a bottle of pumpkin juice, and rolled on over to the nearest isolated Ministry worker. "Hello, sir! Fancy some company? Sherman Clark, at your service." One hand still maneuvering his wheels, his other set his food down and reached out to give his new lunch buddy's fingers a hearty shake.

Who needed conversation starters when you were a walking, talking friendship machine?

Although he would absolutely grab one of those in a second, because it was a simply MARVELOUS idea, of course.
A nearby voice caused Dale to look round, already formulating a response along the lines of 'yes, of course, please join me'. But when he saw who it was, he just sort of sat there for a moment, blinking. He'd not really expecting to see anyone in particular, but finding himself face to face with the Minister, the boss, the big bad wolf (well... not really, but you get the idea), was the kind of thing that startled a person like Dale.

It only took a moment for him to recover from the surprise, however, and soon the young man was extending his own hand and grasping the Minister's. "I, yes... Sherman... Mr. Clark, hello," Dale replied, breaking into a smile and shaking the guy's hand. "Company would be great, thank you, yes. Please do join me. I'm Dale. Dale Upstead."

Well. This was unexpectedly awesome. *fangirls*

Edward waled around the tables, looking for where he should sit. It wasn't his normal pattern to just jump right into conversations and while his stomach told him he should be here, his heart told him it would come at a cost. Edward was always a rather introverted person upon first contact. This didn't come naturally as he'd been rather chipper growing up, but life had taught him to be weary of people he didn't know. This was quite out of his comfort zone now but he might as well work on his people skills. Working in the Department of Mysteries didn't require him to stretch that skill very much, but it was always good to be uncomfortable.

He just continued to wander around here and there, catching snippets of conversation and trying to figure out what to eat.

Maybe even less so.

She wasn't the best with languages – although she WAS living with someone who definitely was – but Olly had still somehow guessed that it was German. Just by the way it sounded. So she just nodded politely when he clarified. "Right." Interesting. Sort of. "I'm from Bristol." She gestured towards her left. Just because that's where it was on the map.

Good. Now they had that out of the way.

With a sigh she took another bite of her sandwich. "Which department?" Her tone of voice clearly suggested she didn't really care.

Bristol. The female said the name as if she was bored and didn't really want to talk. Her eyes seemed to flitter around a little too, but maybe that was just Adam's overactive imagination. Was she worried that someone was watching them? And if she was, why was she worried? He took another big bite of his sandwich, chewing thoroughly before answering the girl's second, clipped question. At least his answers didn't require much in the way of putting together crazy English sentences. Now, if only he could remember what it was he was supposed to say to people who asked....

"Records?" It came out as more of a question than an answer but he covered himself by quickly asking, "Und you?" While he waited, Adam tried to pull up a geography map in his head. He wasn't exactly sure where Bristol was, but he would have wagered somewhere south...

Edward saw a table where a man and woman were sitting having what seemed to be the opening stages of conversation. He approached the table and waited for a brief pause in the chat. When the man asked her where she was from, he spoke up probably at a lower volume than he should have. "Pardon me. Is this seat taken?" He was getting hungry and he'd not exactly had the best breakfast. A scone with tea was all he'd managed after the night he'd spent trying to decide how best to attack the problem he was working on down in the lab.

??????

Olly blinked. What? That wasn't a department. Was it? She was pretty sure it wasn't. "I'm in Environmental Protection." She replied almost automatically, eying him with her eyebrows slightly raised. Olly opened her mouth to ask him AGAIN which department he was working for (maybe he hadn't understood her question??) but never got around to it.

Because someone else was there now. At their table.

Really?!

"....only if you don't use one of those conversation starters on us." She nodded towards the little envelopes on their table.

Adam sensed the female knew he had given the wrong name. Normally, he might care that he had perhaps presented her with the wrong information, but right now his brain was fried. Normally he was pretty good at remembering details like what he was supposed to tell people when asked about work.

”Environment Projection?” Adam repeated. “Vhat does that do?” It seemed like a silly question. Didn’t the name explain it? But Adam felt the best way not to have to talk was to have the female continue to do the talking for them. After all, she was the one that seemed uneasy with just – sitting and eating lunch. Adam’s sandwich was almost gone. He wondered if he could get up and procure another one or would he get in trouble.

Still pondering the recruiting of another sandwich, Adam had taken a drink of his beverage when the man asked to join them. He motioned with his hand to sit down, swallowed and echoed the sentiment of the woman across from him. “Ja, lunch shouldn’t be directed by work…” he stated, accent pronounced more than usual as he wasn’t trying to enunciate well. His comment was funny, considering he and the female had just been explaining what departments they were in.

Edward got the impression the lady wasn't exactly keen on company. He wasn't sure if he'd interrupted something or not until she mentioned the conversation starters. Maybe she just didn't like to talk to strangers. Of course he knew how that felt since it had kept him from sitting down more quickly. He was a rather introverted type who struggled to meet new people, unless of course it was in the context of work (which this was in a strange sort of way).

He took the seat in front of him. "I promise, I won't use the conversation starters. I'm not exactly the most chatty person." He looked at the envelope and did wonder what was in it. Maybe there were some interesting questions he could use to start other conversations when he was feeling awkward and uncomfortable.

SPOILER!!: Adam

As he sat, he heard some more speaking from the gentleman. The accent was certainly not from around the islands. Edward was familiar with it in his interactions with Krel at some of her official events. At the man's comment, Edward looked at him and wondered what sort of chap this was. "I'm not sure that they are directing our conversations. I think it's just a way to get to know new people. There's loads of new ones after every summer when there's been a graduation for the wizarding schools. You're accent is not local. May I ask where you're from?" Edward reached for a tumbler to put some water in and grabbed a couple sandwiches from the tray.

She would pull her hands away, but then it would bring attention to the fact that they were half-holding hands, so she just pretended she didn't even notice. Completely nonchalant. They weren't even her hands, obviously.

She focused back on what William was saying. She unfortunately had been tuning out at the start of his sentence, so she just heard the end of his question. The wedding. Should she describe it? "It was a beautiful wedding, all my extended family was there, the groom looked amazing, too." If she had heard what he was actually asking, she would've mentioned that it was the first time she met her cousin's husband, and maybe elaborated on how it WASN'T HER WEDDING, but she didn't, and so she continued the miscommunication.

Oh. Hand squeeze. Bhuvana tried to keep the wrinkle out of her nose as she lightly squeezed back (she wasn't the most affectionate person ever - actually, she wasn't affectionate at all). "Minister's Office, actually. It's a good thing - I have lots of opinions about the government, and he better listen to what I'm saying if he wants to be smart."
Wow, all of her family came, extended family too. William's eyes again darted to Bhuvana's empty ring finger and then up to her face. "So do you, do you not like wearing rings or something? I mean, CONGRATULATIONS and all but wow, I wouldn't have guessed you were the type to elope--- well, I mean, it's not probably eloping if your whole family goes....that's really more of a destination wedding, then?"

What was he saying. He was rambling. Willy shook his head and let her hands go, since she seemed so reluctant to hand-hug squeeze back. "I see," he nearly laughed at her. Minister's Office. Hah. It did fit. "What makes you think the Minister isn't already smart? I mean, he has these comment cards on all the tables," he picked up his and wafted it at her, "so that was a smart move, trying to get us to solve all the Ministry's problems at a party."

Remember when these things used to just have loads of food and dancing? He did. He liked not having to dress up as much though.

"No." Olly couldn't quite keep herself from smirking slightly, somewhat amused by this interaction. "Protection." She wasn't making fun of him or anything. It was just funny how he would mix up those two words. "I work with plants." She concluded that topic of conversation (sort of) before finishing off her sandwich.

"Good." Her attention was on the new guy now. Good that he wasn't the most chatty person. Then he fit right in at their table. Although somehow she was doing quite a lot of talking (for her). But that was the point of this exercise right? She poured herself some of the water she'd gotten and leaned back a little.

At least there was three of them now. Which meant less talking for her. Hopefully.

Something in the man’s tone made Adam feel foolish. If anyone had been standing behind him, they might have noticed his neck turn a little pink. He finished off this sandwich, deciding against a second one (even if he did look like he could use two or three more). He was certain he used the wrong verb or something in his last comment, but he was just so tired of trying to speak English he wasn’t sure he cared anymore today. It was clearly what he had done with something said to the female as she was politely correcting him. “Wittlich,” he responded. “Germany,” he added as usual. There was something in the man’s accent that wasn’t the same as the girl’s, even if they were quite similar. It was clearly British but seemed to be lilting differently. “Und you?” he asked.

“Plants?” he asked curious and even a little excitedly. Adam had quite the green thumb. “Vhat type of plants do you verk vith?” He wondered if she tended more magical, potion ingredient producing plants or more of the mundane plants. Adam wasn’t so dumb that he didn’t see a good networking opportunity when it presented itself. Knowing someone who might have access to a potion ingredients or a rare seedling or even seed/spores/cuttings he could regrow something from in his now, very very empty and cold studio apartment.

A quick scan of the area also showed people already happily engaged in conversation... hard to foist the woman onto them, too.

So, with that, Emmalee slipped into a chair and picked up the envelope. "Well.. let's see what we have." Emmalee had helped to write the prompts and, well, there were certainly some that she hoped were not in the envelope.

Turning the card over in her hands, Emmalee smiled a little. Not as bad as it could have been.

"Brainstorm two new initiatives that all of the departments represented at your table."
She'd been doing her best not to be rude and now she'd dug herself a little hole, an Emmalee filled hole. A little part of her was saying that she could have said no, but Tala knew it just wasn't in her to be unkind to the older woman. So, there she was... Doing this... Communication exercise with Emmalee and she was determined to speak well and put her best foot forward... Because, whether she admitted it or not, Taladona felt a need to prove herself to the redhead.

Brainstorm initiatives. Tala inwardly sighed, this was not as hard as the others, but it was still not easy considering she hardly knew what Em's department properly did. "That's just our two then." She smiled softly as she thought. "It can't a joint initiative, right?" Tala could actually see a co-mingling of their departments being a good thing, in fact the more she thought of it, the more ideas she began to have.

"Hm.. "

Edward looked to the man as he waited for a response. Then he noticed the sandwiches again and decided to pull the platter closer. He took a couple and then offered some more to the man beside him. The woman didn't seem too interested in them. Maybe she was and maybe she wasn't. At the man's response, Edward smiled. "Wittlich?" and then the gentleman continued. "Germany. Lovely place. I've taken a couple of holidays there myself. I'm rather fond of Bavaria. I'm a horrid skier, but I love the hiking found that way. Beautiful country."

Edward took a bite of the first sandwich, which seemed to be cucumbers and heard the question of his origins. Swallowing quickly, Edward waited for the bite to go down and answered. "I'm from Wales. At least my family is. I live here in London now. Not sure I'll ever lose the Welsh in my accent though."

What TYPE of plants?

That was a weird question. "All kinds of plants." Was this a language problem again? Or did he think they only worked with one type of plant? "Both Muggle and magical." Was that the question? "We do experiments." Or WOULD be doing. Once she'd actually started working, you know. Honestly, she was pretty excited about the whole thing.

When the two men talked, Olly just sort of, kind of listened, not particularly interested in what they were saying. When the new guy offered the German guy the sandwiches, she just raised her eyebrows at him. That was...rude. Not offering her any. There was definitely some staring going on. Rude Welsh person. Was he deliberately trying to be rude?

"I'll have one." And with that she just took one off the plate.

Someone who knew where Wittlich was? ?How unusual. It sparked interest in Adam, purely from the fact that usually nobody knew anything about the dumpy old town, despite all the legends surrounding it. Maybe the legends only traveled in German circles though…

He took another sandwich, now that they were offered to him. This time it appeared to be cheese and while Adam was not a huge fan of cheese (he preferred meat) he took a bite at the male explained where he was from. Adam had been unaware that Wales spoke differently, but it did explain the different tilt in the man’s voice. The girl spoke up again and grabbed for a sandwich herself. She explained more about her job with plants. So she was going to be experimenting on plants. “Is that not dangerous for the environment?” Adam asked. Introducing a man-developed plant into a ecosystem could have really bad consequences. Then again, thought the potioneer and herbologist in Adam, they could produce something new that would help develop new potions nobody would ever think of. “Do you,” he asked, unaware she was as new as he was. “Cross-breed non-magical with magical plants?”

Edward was a little surprised that the woman took a sandwich. Perhaps he was being a bit rude, but the woman wasn't exactly warm and welcoming. "Sorry. I should have offered you as well."

He began to listen to the other two discuss her job as he ate the sandwiches before him. She seemed to be involved in herbology work. It had it's uses but the German man raised an interesting question. What sort of interplay did wizards have between magical and non-magical plants? Did it have some sort of negative impact on either eco-system?

"You think?" Yes, he should've offered her one too.

Olly was tempted to leave – not because he had offended her or anything but because she was slowly getting bored – but couldn't. Because effort. Getting up. Finding a new table. Eh. She was just going to stay here and eat her sandwich and hope they wouldn't talk to her too much about boring stuff.

Although that one guy was allowed to talk to her. Since he was asking about her job.

Even if he was asking weird questions. "We're trying to protect the environment. Not destroy it." Hence Environmental PROTECTION. Olly gave him an unimpressed look. Yes she was totally already identifying with her department. Even though she hadn't even technically worked there yet. "Among other things, yes." At least that's what it had said in the job description. That's what she'd been doing the past year.

Adam may have a hard time understanding English, but he didn’t have a problem understanding tone. Something had set the paranoid girl off, although he wasn’t sure if it was the sandwiches or the questions he was asking. They seemed legitimate questions to Adam. He didn’t know what her department did. Even if it did have the word “protection” in it, experiments often went wrong. He would know. He had lost count of how many potions had blown up in his face. One careless or uncalculated move could do way more damage than one would think. He was living proof of that in more than one way.

He glanced to the male sitting next to him, not for solidarity but to see if he could provide insight into the female’s issue. He got nothing. “I vas not saying you vere,” he said finally. “I am how you say….” He paused trying to wrack his over-used brain for the correct word. “Curious? Herb-botony is my second love.” He took another bite out of his sandwich chewing quietly. He had been trying to grown Yellow Parilla for a year now. He had come to the conclusion that even with the weather change, it was the fact the plant didn’t like pots. He really needed to find a place with a garden plot so he could grow it and not have to keep searching apothecaries for moonseed.

Edward raised an eyebrow at the woman's response. She was a bit on the rude side herself. Of course perhaps it was a response to his own, though he got the idea she was a little prickly. Might work well in herbology. As he listened to the conversation, he noted the gentleman look his way as if he was seeking Edward's support, but Edward was content to let the woman be rude. No need to stir things up more.

He decided to speak after the man mentioned plants. "Always good to have hobbies and curiousity is a good thing. Helps us learn the world better." He turned to the lady. "How long have you worked in Environmental Protection? Seems like an interesting division. Can't say I've met any others in that division."

Okay good. He better not be saying that.

She took a bite from her sandwich, just looking at the German guy for a moment. "You're into plants?" Or, as he'd said, he was curious about them. That was certainly interesting. Out of the two men he was DEFINITELY the more interesting one. The other one was just rude. And somewhat annoying.

Although he HADN'T used the conversation starters. Which was good.

"Just started." There was literally no reason to lie about this. Olly didn't care enough to do so. Also she was still quite young so it was alright for her to only start working at the Ministry now right? Even if, say, Lex and Penelope had started here before her. Didn't mean she wasn't just as qualified as they were.

Her comment about just starting struck Adam as odd. Wouldn’t everyone who was in orientation be new? He finished off his second sandwich, refilled his drink then passed the pitcher to his left, and therefore Olly received it first. As he took a drink of his beverage, he glanced at the man to his right. He didn’t appear new. He was too calm, collected, and, well, seasoned looking to be new. Adam wasn’t describing the man as old, no, he just had that “traveled the world” look about him. Adam himself had done quite a bit of traveling, but he didn’t have that “look.” At least he didn’t’ think he did….

And if felt like it was his turn to share something. He decided to stick to the plant subject. After all, it was safe and if he could manage to keep the topic there, the girl might not ask him more questions about the department he worked in. Yes, Adam was quite afraid of the secrecy clauses he had to sign. “Ja,” he said simply. “Herb-botony and potioning go together like rabbit and stew.” Now that he thought about it, maybe this girl would have a suggestion about his Yellow Parilla. “I have been trying to grow Yellow Parilla for a year now. It seems to not like pots.”

"What?????"

Bhuvana was utterly confused. What was he saying? Why was he talking about destination weddings, and eloping, and the fact she wasn't wearing a ring? Of course she wasn't wearing a ring, it wasn't her wedding -

Oh. Oh Merlin. Bhuvana couldn't help herself - she threw her head back and laughed. She stopped after a few seconds, recomposed herself, and said (still smiling), "No, it wasn't my wedding, not at all! Merlin, I'm SINGLE, there's NO way I am even CLOSE to getting married." She was having a hard time saying everything through her giggles - she was acting so uncharacteristically, but it was BECAUSE William's assumption was so uncharacteristic of herself. Oh, dear. Oh, Merlin. She caught her breath and turned, her cheeks tinged red from laughing, back to William.

Oh. His hand was gone. As much as Bhuvana didn't like affection, his hand was nice. Or something. Not that she was paying attention to that. "In general, the Minister for Magic is a high power job, and power corrupts and all. I'm not saying I have anything against the minister, but I also have ideas he should pay attention or bring attention to." Simple as that.

And the comment cards. "I mean, we're adults. We should be able to have a conversation by ourselves, not with a conversation starter."
