| Election 2090 - North End Q&A Made of Awesome | Ern-la the Best-wa | TZ's Apogee Election 2090 - Candidate Q&A The fall air is crisp and clean, just perfect for a day out on Diagon Alley. Tucked in one corner of the Alley is a hastily constructed stage with several podiums set facing the street. Ribbons hang from every podium, each a different color and lined with the name and motto of one of the candidates.
Today's event is a Question and Answer session, which means that the candidates on stage are prepared to take questions from the crowd about their policies and plans if they win the election. Ask one or all, and pay careful attention to their answers - your future Minister is standing before you! North End Candidates:- Bellaire, Sophia
- Carter, Roxanne
- Culloden, Cosgrach
- De La Garza, Jorge
- Gemino, King
OOC Note: the structure of this thread is pretty free form. Ask questions, and the candidates will answer as completely as they can. Don't forget to indicate who the question is for, or everyone will answer it.

| A Poop * k8 * Ember was really cold. It was probably because she was so pregnant, but really, she could have layered a little better. Teeth chattering, she approached the podium and layout near the North end of Diagon Alley, wondering if she was one of the first to arrive.
Seriously, was there hot chocolate? She left her sunglasses on, staring around. The candidates would be starting soon yes? Or had it already started or...? She needed to think of a question, and she sort of wished Mimi was here. Rubbing her very large belly, the pregnant woman let her teeth chatter drawn out the sound of her hungry stomach.
...She had forgotten breakfast .__.

...She had forgotten breakfast .__. Fussing with the hem of her skirt as she hurried down the street, Kiera's eye lit up slightly when she was first greeted with a familiar face rather than a collective crowd of strangers like she had been expecting. It put all of her skirt fussing and finger tugging to rest - at least for now.
"Good day, Ember," she smiled shyly while tucking some of the blonde hair that had come loose from her clip behind her ear. Her eyes couldn't help but glance down at her co-worker's bulging tummy, admittedly a tinge of jealousy eating through her own vacant one. "Do you need me to perform a warming charm for you?" Her teeth were chattering something fierce.
She had come with a few inquiries, particularly to those candidates who had made blanket statements in regards to their goals as Minister, and had written them out on a piece of parchment so she could simply read from it should her nerves get the better of her. Which they certainly would. Speaking in public was terrifying, but this was for a worthy cause.

Roxanne took a deep breath, inhaling the crisp winter air as she made her way to the podium bearing her name and motto. One had to wonder rather the person who'd set this up had ever experienced a British winter. While the fresh air would be useful if anyone became overwhelmed started to feel faint, the cold certainly wasn't good for anyone and could possibly keep people away. The exact opposite of the point of this exercise.
She reached her podium and began to set up, placing both her water bottle and not-. Wait a minute......
Apparently the voters had already started to gather. Well. Roxanne was ready. Bring it.

| Frangelina || twitter addict || Music of the Sun || The Fresh Princess of Bellaire Sophia inhaled the crisp London air. Well finally, something to give her people skills and brain some exercise in her own country. She liked the fact that they were having these debates in Diagon Alley. It gave her a chance to hear from the common people, rich and poor alike.
What better way to connect to the grass root voters?
She gave the persons there an acknowledging nod before before taking her spot behind her podium.
Yep, she was ready for this.

| Puff by day, snake by night | Mj's bestie | Always UP to Something... It was time for another event. Well Jorge had been busy with is magazine, but of course was making time to do his own appearances around the alley. Plus had anyone noticed things weren't going so well for that alley? Maybe it was just his keen eye for journalism that was catching things, but that wasn't his concern at the moment. He didn't work for the Prophet anymore or anything.
As he strolled through the door with his beautiful wife on his arm he gave everyone that was already there a charming smile. "Hello, how is everyone today." To say Jorge was in a good mood was an understatement. If anyone remembered the last election and the question and answers Jorge De La Garza rocked the podium by asking the hard questions. Some were a bit shaken and got very heated and offended by them. Though he was going to be doing the answering rather then the questioning he knew the reporter in him would have to question if something didn't seem right.
Only time would tell if history would repeat itself.

| ¼ of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pls With his best, dark blue suit on; grey hair combed so carefully that not even one strand stood out; with JUST enough perfume for people to smell but not suffocate (being a potions master definitely helped); Cosgrach Culloden was ready.
He and his wife had spent the last night (or rather, several nights) preparing for this. Having run a campaign previously, she knew more or less what the people could ask; and he had an answer for all. Or so he hoped. He was a little bit nervous, of course, but that only made him think sharper. A little bit of adrenaline was always good...
Taking a deep breath, he approached the area. 3 opponents were already there, plus two possible voters. He made sure to make eye contact with all. "Good day," he greeted them all, and took his place behind his podium.
Let's get going, then. |

| astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf As the candidates began filing in, each recognizable from her Ministry materials covering the election, Kiera fished into her pockets for her note parchment and gave Ember an almost pleading look. Maybe SHE could just read from it for her?
No?
She wished Atticus were here...or even Daphne. Although Daphne would just be spitting fire at each of them to see who could handle the heat. "I..um..." she began, tucking a few strands of her blonde hair behind her ear and keeping her eyes glued to the parchment. A piece of parchment that she now had held so close to her face it was covering her features and making her already gentle voice even softer. "W-What form does your patronus take a-and why do you think it has that form?"
Nontraditional and certainly seeming to have little to do with any of their campaigns, but as was with all Flamsteed actions...a reason to the madness.

Nontraditional and certainly seeming to have little to do with any of their campaigns, but as was with all Flamsteed actions...a reason to the madness. Questions. Cosgrach came here to answer those, so he was extra-attentive to the two ladies here to question them. He watched the street briefly, before he saw out of the corner of his eye a parchment in the hands of one of them. The woman was getting ready to ask a question... he wondered who it would be directed at...
QUITE an unusual question, wasn't it? He liked it, though. He paused only briefly and looked at the other candidates to see if anyone was getting ready to answer - but they didn't seem to be, so he cleared his throat to indicate HE was going to answer first... since it was directed at no one. "My patronus is a crow," he said with a hint of a smile, "and I believe, that's because even though no one expects them to be incredibly clever and apt; they are. They can take care of themselves by constructing tools." So, he considered himself to be cleverer than he looked, and he could solve problems. "Plus they can fly, so they are free. However, they do defend their area if it comes to that."
That was enough reasoning, hopefully? |

Which they certainly would. Speaking in public was terrifying, but this was for a worthy cause. Ember saw the candidates getting ready to start asking for questions. They all looked so nice today, and it made her smile. She hoped they weren't nervous, and she honestly wished them all the best of luck. She had...inklings of who she wanted to vote for, but she honestly could be swayed by some of their answers. Who knew.
Kiera was here, though, and Ember smiled over at her colleague and friend. "Hello, Keira," she replied, nodding her head in the other woman's direction. At her question, she nodded. "Yes, please. I know it's not TOO cold out, but I'm freezing. And I think it's because of my little bugger--" she joked, her hands on her tummy. Was his name Grigory? Alexei? They hadn't decided yet, but Ember didn't mind either one. "Taking all my warmth!" she smiled. Keira seemed to have written down her questions, and Ember normally would have, but with everything being chaotic lately...and Mitya driving her up a wall with his overprotection, she just...had forgotten.
Sigh.
Kiera's question, though, was very interesting. And honestly, Ember wanted to hear more answers. Cosgrach Culloden's have been interesting, for sure. A crow. Hmm. Could she envision a crow for Minister? "What are your feelings on pest experimentation?" she suddenly asked. A question from her own heart, and had to do directly with her life. Any or all of them SHOULD answer.

| Puff by day, snake by night | Mj's bestie | Always UP to Something... Jorge took his time to get with the rest of the candidates and he made sure to greet them all. Oh look there was Cossy he got a friendly hello and Jorge was about to make some small talk, but it looked like they were getting ready quickly as a question, a very interesting question had hit them. Now his curiosity really wanted to ask her a question about why she pick this question, but he knew he wasn't the one asking. He needed to be the one to answer.
Allowing his fellow candidates to answer he waited his turn. "My patronous is a cheetah. The cheetah is fast, smart, and with their flexible spine they can adapt to get what they want. I feel these strong characteristics is what gave me the cheetah as my patronous. I've always been quick to problem solve, figure out what's going on. My abilities as a journalist has proven my skills. I am flexible and can find my target and get what I want." Right now what he wanted was to become the minister and he was planning on not stopping until he got there.
Looking at the next lady who had a question, the woman seemed a bit familiar, like he had seen her around the ministry before. "It depends on what you mean. Creatures in general or actual pest? I don't feel creatures should ever be experimented on. We have other options to experiment potions and products. People every day volunteer to try new things out. If we can do volunteer things, why use creatures that really can't tell us how the product is effecting them. We base all the research on what they look like, brain waves, but we don't truly know, they can't fully tell us." So to him that was pointless. "If you are talking about pest that harm our crops, carry diseases that magic can't even get rid of them I do think we should keep working on things to block their carrying gene or rid the population of the pest to help us. For example, mosquitos carry tons and tons of diseases, they are not a primary food source for anything. Creatures that eat them eat them just as a snack. They carry less nutritional value then a moth, which most creatures eat over them. There really isn't a true value of them being around so ridding ourselves of them would actually help the world as a whole. So experimenting on those types of pest to better protect from their problems I do not see a problem in."

Nontraditional and certainly seeming to have little to do with any of their campaigns, but as was with all Flamsteed actions...a reason to the madness. The first question.....was an odd one. Though it was good, definitely, whether it was asked to throw them off or get a better insight into their personalities. "My Patronus is an alley cat." As for why.....well. "I think it took that form because, like me, alley cats are scrappy and smart. They are able to adapt, using their smarts to survive using only what is around them. Also, they tend to stand their ground when challenged. But they also tend to be either underestimated, overlooked or even seen as ultimately undesirable to those unwilling to see their smarts or beauty." Yes, alley cats were beautiful. One just had to be willing to see it. Quote:

Honestly, she had never thought about it. Did people really even do that? Beats her. "Um.......it depends on rather you mean testing new products on them or testing new ways to be rid of them. If it's testing new products on them, that should definitely not be done. I'm reminded of the break out from that London facility several years ago and how mutated the creatures were. What if those had been pests instead of formerly cute creatures? What if those experiments had created some kind of 'super pest' that was resistant to any attempts to rid the country of them?" The thought made her shiver. "However, I have nothing against testing new ways to be rid of them, as long as they are tested in a lab. Pest repellents and exterminates need to be tested to be sure they are safe to be released to the general public."

Sophia nodded as he former colleague also joined the other candidates at the podium. It was interesting how you ran into pillow from your past even when you take a completely new route in life.
But finally, questions....and a very uncommon one to boot. "My patronus takes the form of a hippocampus." Something she was very proud of mind you. It was nothing mundane and something seeped in magical history and lore. "I think my patronus is a representation of my purpose in life, which is 'bringing seemingly different things and ideas together to create a perfect whole. I don't think any of us, could imagine should an amazing being as a hippocampus, had we been tasked to create life and populate our planet. But somehow what appears to be the half of a land mammal and the half of a sea creature comes together to create a completely functional and majestic creature. Which is what I've always strove to do..bring together two separate entities to create a majestic whole." Quote:

That she had never thought about before really. She had worked in the creatures department for a short stint years ago but her job was not related to pest control. "Well that would depend on entirely on what creatures we're talking about, wouldn't it? Some people view rats as pest and even frogs..for some of us, they are pets..part of our families and some would take complete offense to magical experimentation of these creatures. I therefore thing experimentation should be looked on, on a case by case basis."

| Unforgivably Cursed | adultescent Being the first election she could legally vote in, Brynn was rather interested in the whole electoral process and what the candidates had to say. Was it her, or were there a lot of people running for Minister? The 19 year old didn't really know for sure, but it seemed like a lot and she had no idea who might be the best. This Q&A session might be a good way to find out. And.. was that Professor Bellaire?? She didn't realize her former teacher was running.
She found the question about patronuses to be rather interesting, especially how the candidates interpreted what the animals represented. Though she did wonder if casting a patronus was a requirement of running, knowing that not everyone could. But maybe it wasn't a good sign for a Minister candidate to not be able to cast a patronus. And it sure would be embarrassing to admit that publicly.
The WADA student had a few thoughts and questions of her own and once there was a lull, she raised her hand a bit to get the candidates' attention. "Hello. As it's an issue very important to me, I was wondering what your thoughts are on Squib rights and what you would intend to do not only in terms of support, but to facilitate inclusion within the Wizarding community?" Because as far as she was concerned, there was still so much bias against them and much more could be done for that minority.

| A Poop * k8 * Ember thought they all gave......interesting answers.
Interesting being a mild word.
Honestly, Jorge could do with trimming down his answers, in Ember's opinion, because he answered the question in the very beginning of his statement. That's all she cared about, really. And she agreed with him, though the next candidate got GLARY eyes from this pest control advisor. RID of them? Was this woman under the impression Ember was getting RID of pests? Ever? She scoffed at Roxanne Carter's response as her lavender eyes went to the next candidate. She was in no place to argue with them, merely to listen. Ask questions, listen. Plus she was still freezing her small butt off.
Bellaire woman got an eyebrow raise, and Ember regretted asking her question because her FAITH in the candidates was going down down DOOOWWWWWWN, but she reminded herself there were things she liked from each of their platforms so far.
A young girl nearby asked something EMBER had been wondering about as well. She glanced at the redhead and then back up at the candidates. "To piggy-back off of that--I know some of you wanted to create more jobs for squibs--and I wanted to know how you plan on implementing these jobs, and ALSO how you plan on implementing any policies you might pass making it illegal to disregard squibs for employment?"

As it's an issue very important to me, I was wondering what your thoughts are on Squib rights and what you would intend to do not only in terms of support, but to facilitate inclusion within the Wizarding community?" Because as far as she was concerned, there was still so much bias against them and much more could be done for that minority. Seeing but ignoring the younger woman's glare, Roxanne moved on to listen to the next young woman's question. Little Miss Creatures Employee was going to have to learn to be okay with the fact that not everyone shared her view on pests.
Ah, squibs. Something that Roxanne had given a little more thought to, not that such thoughts had lead to any workable solutions. "That is an issue with no easy answer. Though, I do share your feeling that that particular bias does need to be worked on. Do we look to our Muggle counterparts' history and simply pass laws banning discrimination against Squibs? Do we take the more subtle approach and create community discussions on discrimination? Either way, I do think that we have a long road ahead of us there, as deeply rooted as that particular bias is." They were talking centuries of bias, of families actually disowning Squib family members. It something that would have to be worked on carefully and probably for several decades.
And jobs? Um, yeah, there was tons of work to be done before jobs in the magical world could even be considered for Squibs.

| Puff by day, snake by night | Mj's bestie | Always UP to Something... Listening to the other candidates talk about their patronous Jorge started thinking about how this could be an interesting piece, but soon was distracted by a familiar young lady. He was sure he had seen her around with Victoria's son and glanced at Cossy. When she brought up squibs another side glance might have happened to two of his family friends. He knew what had been going on and that this was a delicate topic for even his family since his wife's goddaughter was a possible one. Then the pest fanatic spoke with an extension question.
Before he could answer the famous Roxanne took the stand. He nodded as she spoke and then took his turn, "Well miss I think these are great questions.I think squibs have been wrong for long enough. We live in a world that more and more beings are being excepted into our society, but yet squibs are still discriminated against. I can't say I agree with my opponent on her stance of we have a long way to go. There is a primary school in our wizarding world that now has classes to help young squibs adapt. They are taking the steps that we all need to take. Our bias has changed more and more." "Further more if I'm elected I feel we could help squibs not be so disconnected to our world. They were born in our world and shouldn't be casted out because their magic didn't come. They should feel a part of our society not outcasted and I will do everything in my power to make sure that happens." This is one of the topics he was already considering so it was great it was brought up.
Looking and giving his signature smile towards the creatures fan, "I think there are positions in the ministry that could easily be done by a squib. There are many departments that do not fully use wands or magic so it could be a place for them to work. I also feel that goes for shops in our community as well as restaurants. Segregation laws and discrimination laws for employment should be put into place if a person is qualified and can handle the position then they should be hired not turned way because they can't work a wand."
He had this in the bag, he could feel it.

| We're running just a bit late, but Reagan couldn't help herself. >.< Zombie Apocalypse Team Leader ★ ★ in a crown of pepperoni and artisan cheese Hmmmmm, what was this she'd read about a Minister for Magic Q & A session? Reagan Penrose might have been away from England for a few years now, having gone off to complete her education in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, but she simply could not pass up the opportunity to ask these potential Ministers some very important questions of her own. Mainly concerning creature mistreatment, the protection and cultivation of rare and exotic magical plants, and moving forward with the elimination of prejudices against squibs and all beings currently subjugated (i.e. werewolves). See, studying in a country that has faced crisis such as famine and creature overpopulation, it really opened one's eyes to more worldly issues and how they should all be helping one another. Decidedly political, yes, but it couldn't (AND SHOULDN'T) be ignored.
Kindness and loving one another made the world go 'round!
So, grabbing a pamphlet with the names of all the candidates listed in both areas of the alley, Reagan slipped a stolen press badge around her neck, prepared to pose as an international news journalist if everyday citizens weren't allowed to ask questions. Ahem, by any means necessary, you see. This was crucial business! And it was no harm done, anyway, as it had only been borrowed. Meaning it would be returned, gosh.
Gently nudging her way to the front of the gathering crowd, Rea adjusted her glasses and looked upon those currently speaking. They were a wonderfully lovely looking group. Also, one of her focal points was being discussed! Eeeeep, digging down into her bag, she produced a tape recorder; quickly pressing the REC button. Hehe, old writing habits. Couldn't be helped, you understand.
AHEM. "Excuse me, candidates ..." Rea had her big girl voice on! It was like being back on her school's newspaper all over again! Oh, how she missed Professor Myers. " ... but in regards to regulations, I feel this could also apply to both bitten and born werewolves, especially of a prepubescent age. What steps do you plan to take on their behalf? Especially those that have been orphaned?"
Possibly not the best segue, but she had other issues to inquire about and this one made the most sense for right now.

Possibly not the best segue, but she had other issues to inquire about and this one made the most sense for right now. Well what an ambitious young woman the next asker seemed to be! As she listened to the question, though, Roxanne felt irritation bubbling up. Jeez, what was with the sudden obsession with creatures? There were other more pressing issues to deal with. Like health care for the mentally ill, wages, or higher education. Even more of the off the wall questions would have been better!
She hid her irritation with the creatures bonkers population, though, and answered the question. "You know, I prefer leaving anything involving werewolves to the professionals, of which I am definitely not." She preferred not having angry werewolves after her, thank you very much.
Cheese and crackers.

Because as far as she was concerned, there was still so much bias against them and much more could be done for that minority. Never mind, the discussion moved on too quickly for him to even open his mouth........... to the issue of squibs. His face fell slightly, although to everyone else it would look like he was merely contemplating the question. He was contemplating his precious daughter's future, actually, his squib daughter. If the next minister, whoever that would be, didn't ensure the safety of squibs' future -
He got out of his mini-trance as his opponent began talking. He listened even more closely, for anyone here could be elected and he wanted to hear what they promised to do. Mrs. Carter clearly didn't even have a plan, she just beat the bush around by asking pointless rhetorical questions. Jorge, on the other hand, had a better plan - he had a plan, and Cosgrach was grateful for that. Did he think of Alayna as he came up with it?
It was his turn to anwer. "Well, Mr. de la Garza made an excellent point about primary school," he said, "and I think an equivalent of Hogwarts should be set up for squibs that covers both some of the magical lessons, and muggle ones. Therefore, when they graduate, they will be equipped for both of the worlds and might have a chance to pick where to work.
"As for ensuring they do get work in our world, setting up squib quotas at both ministry and private sector might help. Or, as Mr. de la Garza has already said, there are lots of jobs they can do. At the very least, the Ministry can also set up specific positions for them. If I am elected, I'll discuss it with professionals which method might be the best to ensure employment." He paused, then added as an afterthought, "The anti-discrimination laws will also be made stronger and specific anti-discrimination discussion - for every different minority, actually, like the werewolves, giants, vampires etc. can be held both at primary school and Hogwarts - should the education professionals recommend." He wasn't an expert on child development, see, so he WOULD work with professionals on the matter. Quote:

Possibly not the best segue, but she had other issues to inquire about and this one made the most sense for right now. Another young girl was trying to ask a question, so Cosgrach turned towards her.
Oh, werewolves. He remembered that combined lesson, when the whole class (tried to) brewed Wolfsbane Potion. It was... 4 years ago or so. Time did fly away... "Free Wolfsbane Potions will be supplied if I am elected," he said, after his opponent finished talking, "I am also a potions master, so I'll personally set up the system." Because he was promising better health care, and it certainly included that. "As for the orphaned werewolf children, I promise more funding as a whole to orphanages. Health professionals will also have discussions with werewolf children to explain them correctly what to expect and how to manage it. Then, as I've explained in my previous answer," which the young lady might not have heard of, so he was repeating again, "after discussing it with education professionals, we might implement a class or discussion sessions about different minorities within our community at wizarding schools; so that the children learn about them through a secure and correct medium, not through prejudiced rumours and lies."
As long as the families didn't fill their heads with stupid prejudice. |

Beverly was here to see her former Potions Professor in action. She knew he was already brilliant, but it was quite something else seeing him in action outside of the walls of Hogwarts.
Sat near the front, Mrs. Wayne-Walker watched the candidates duke it out. Her aristocratic features remained neutral, though her mind was half already made up. Cosgrach wanted a better, clearer future for the wizard population, and Beverly had faith in him. He could get them there.
Unlike her brother's choice. This was partly why she was also here. To collect enough information on candidates and then duke it out with her brother during dinner. She knew he was doing the same, and being a Wayne, they weren't going down until they've proved their point.
So far Cosgrach was winning her over. There was a smug little smile on her lips. That's her professor. You go, Cosgrach!

The questions had stopped completely. As for why, that was a mystery. She hated not being able answer any questions about her platform specifically. Could she kind of go off script here and talk about it anyway? Or did she have to wait until someone asked a question?
Roxanne decided to be proactive in this situation. "Does anyone else have any questions for anyone up here before we have to leave? Maybe something about our platforms......?" Why the Ministry hadn't hired a moderator for this was something she would never figure out. It was lazy and sloppy work at best.

Strange. Its probably nothing. Nothing went unnoticed by Roxanne, especially not rumbling underfoot. Thing was, Britain wasn't really known for earthquakes. Which meant that something more sinister was going on. But she was also trained not to cause a panic when she wasn't really sure what was going on and no lives seemed to be in danger. And that was exactly the case here. There seemed to be no immediate danger, so she kept silent but kept her eyes and feet and ears peeled for anything else out of the ordinary.

| A Poop * k8 * Ember has been listening, taking mental notes in her head, thinking of more questions to ask, when....she was SHAKEN. Not heavily or a LOT, but she felt the ground-- "Did ANYONE else feel that?" she asked suddenly, her hands resting protectively on her stomach. Being pregnant made her more paranoid, more cautious, than she had ever been before. She saw one of the candidates (Roxanne) look around as if she felt it, too--but it was so suddenly and quick and NOT that bad that she was probably overreacting.
So, she decided to ask another question. "Well, I've read about most of your platforms already--but if you'd like to share it, that's fine as well." Since others might not have done research on the candidates.
