It was like a repeat of her Third Year, being cornered by a Dementor up in the Gryffindor Common Room, only now it was a maze and she wasn't clinging desperately to one Alice Fischer thinking it wasn't the way she wanted to go.

Granted, she was currently thinking this was not the way she wanted to go but the circumstances were very much different. The feelings associated with it? Those were old.

There was a certain heaviness in the air; a sinking feeling of despair building up inside her. Of course she knew the only thing to do was cast a patronus to make it leave but her partner who was clearly a little quicker in thinking this time around than she was had already gotten to that. Happy thoughts weren't the easiest to come by right now but she found something; happiest memory she could conjure and cast at the Dementor sending a silvery blue cheetah darting from her wand and to the aid of the raven. Seemingly the less patient of the two, it snarled and made advances, forcing the creature further and further back.

"Come on, we'll take this way." Lex said, yanking at Rhydian's hand to pull him down the aisle in the direction opposite the Dementor. No need to stick around. Those patronuses knew what they were doing.

He'd never seen Lex's patronus before, and needless to say he was impressed. Impressed at how well the raven and cheetah worked together, and slightly unsurprised that it was, indeed, a cat. The impressedness was about to take vocal form in the sound of a low-key whistle, when Lex all but jerked him sideways.

He ate the whistle, nearly choked on it and stumbled after her. A brief glance was given over his shoulder at the patronus combo having it out with the dementor. Quite impressive really. A grin took hold, even as they ran away from the coldness and back into milder air. "Quite the lunge you've got there, Miss Cambridge."

Though, admittedly running from a dementor was more of a saving grace than running from pixies.

Once they were a good distance away, and a few more turns lost, Rhydian slowed them to a walk, giving his partner a once-over. "You alright?"

Not gonna stop just yet, had to put as much distance between them and the creature as possible. Hopefully someone else would run into it and pull it further off their tail. No offense or anything but when it came to Dementors it was ALWAYS better the next guy than her. She still had a life to live and there was no telling what kind of life the other guy was living anyway. Plainly she was a safe bet.

For now Lex, chose to ignore his comment, taking corners blindly, choosing paths without really thinking about them until she could swear they were going in circles. Only thing to prove her right would be running into her patronus and the dementor again but that didn't happen and soon she could feel herself being drawn into a walk.

Funny how you never really notice the need for air until after the fact. "I'm fine." Alexa glanced behind them, ignoring the fact that if in truth it had followed they would be able to feel it.

"Saw my former Groundskeeper get his soul sucked. Don't reckon I wanted either of us to be next." The thing about that was, no matter how much she'd told the man to get up, insisted he shake it off, he never did. He never did anything again and she had WAY too much to do to have that happen. "Should be fine now, if you don't count the fact that we're possibly more lost than even the organizers of this thing intended us to be."

Fine didn't involve running for countless minutes around countless corners. Fine didn't involve being so out of breath that even saying you were fine took effort. And fine most certainly wasn't followed up by such an explanation.

For a moment, Rhydian just watched her from the corner of his eyes. There wasn't much that one could say to a statement like that, and knowing Lex she most certainly didn't want a hug or hand-squeeze, things that might be taken as degrading to her strength. And he most certainly was not going to ask if that's why she wasn't a huge fan of kisses.

Bad timing brain. Simply bad timing.

Pursing his lips, he let the silence between them reign for a few moments. Not a bad thing, silence. Especially in light of such news. It was almost a respectful tribute to the dead groundskeeper, though he wasn't sure exactly what a groundskeeper was or what said person had to with Lex. Or why there was a dementor near Lex.

"Never seen a dementor before myself," but death was an old friend, "just heard about them." He couldn't resist giving her some sort of assurance, and settled for giving her hand a brief, understanding squeeze as he turned them around another corner. "So, thank you for hauling us out of there."

Patronuses or not.

He also tried for a light-hearted smile. "Being lost is half of the fun." Provided there were no more dementors to come calling. What the other half was? He was still working on that, in case she asked.

The silence passed unnoticed while Lex tried catching her bearings. They had taken a couple left turns to be sure and possibly half as many right. Had they been moving further in or closer to the entrance they'd just come from? Might help if all these shrubs didn't look alike. It was just an endless wall of green that stretched in all directions.

His statement got an intrigued raise of her brow. "Never? Not even from a far?" She didn't know if she thought he was lucky or not. Thing is, as terrifying as they were, they were also fascinating and Lex liked knowing she'd done something at least once. Problem with the dementors that term was that their appearance wasn't a one time deal, they were everywhere.

"They took over Hogwarts during my Third Year. It was alright til they got into our Common Rooms and eventually tried making a feast out of us." And she meant that. The day they crashed the Quidditch match, nearly outing Odessa and Kinsley was amusing, the way they clung to each other and Theo was bawling, priceless....then they got inside the Gryffindor Common Room and the roles changed and SHE was the one near tears but naturally feeling better knowing that she didn't cry when Theodore Kinsley most certainly HAD. Ahem.

"Hauling's almost second nature now when it comes to those things." Experience did that.

"And I'm guessing we're having the time of our lives then." If being lost was half the fun and Lex didn't even know where to start looking for the exit, it was safe to say they MUST have been having a blast. Funny how it seemed to be getting darker though. Not cold, just dark which automatically ruled out a second round with the Dementor but it didn't change the fact that something was up.

Lex continued on, figuring if it wasn't a dementor it was perfectly manageable even in the now very very dim ligh--

"Rhydian..." Her eyes widened considerably as she felt something at her bare feet. The ground here was damp. She didn't mind it at first because it felt nice but now there was something wrapping around her ankle and making it's way up. "I think...I think there's something at my feet." Seconds later the same coiling motion worked at her other ankle and up. What the kneazle??

"Never." He shook his head once. "Never had any reason or opportunity to." Place and time and all that jazz. Which meant bonus points for her; he'd never been to Azkaban.

But Hogwarts? As in the school Hogwarts? The infamous school? She got a look for that one. "You're telling me....you had dementors in your common room." Yes, that was what she had just said, but he felt the need to repeat it just to make sure he'd pieced together his hearing right. And if he hadn't seen how she had just reacted to the dementor, he would have said her pants were on fire too.

"The schools new security or something?" Place had a knack for trouble, as he'd heard it. Dementors might be a solution, were they not so well...dark and dangerous. Funny how that worked. Except, not really.

A cheeky grin replaced his befuddlement and he was about to agree to her latest statement when she went and said that. In that spine-tingling tone. It was the closest thing to fear he'd ever heard from his partner, besides the silent expression of running blindly.

Taking a step back, because it was the logical response to when someone said they'd just stepped somewhere they shouldn't have, Rhydian tightened his grip on her hand and gave his wand a good, hard flick. Light bloomed on the tip of his wand, and the brief movement in the darkness halted. With it, his stomach dropped somewhere within his nice shoes, which, were unfortunately surrounded by the vines.

"Well, this I've seen before." Holding the light closer to her legs, Rhydian couldn't help but watch in fascination as the vine tightened and froze, like muscle coiling to stillness. Squatting (because it was such a brilliant idea in a nest of devil's snare vines), Rhydian moved his face closer to her ankles, being careful to keep the light bright and focused where his gaze was. "You think they've got brains somewhere? Or is it all chemical reaction driven?"

It was decided, he wasn't lucky at all. Never. No opportunity. Not even once. Didn't seem like something he should be happy about given this was the same guy that wanted to see a Nundu even once despite her clear cut warnings. "Not new security, they were there to take us out. Someone spiked the food with happy potions and you know how they react to positive emotions. Just wanna suck 'em all out of you and leave you hollow." Whiiiich they had actually done to Firth so....

Did anyone ever find out who was behind that? It was in the past but that didn't mean she had any fewer words for the bloke. Right now though, she didn't have words for anyone outside of her partner and whatever the hell had decided to attach itself to her feet.

Thankfully he brought some light into the place because not seeing was only making her squirmy. Glancing down, the young woman's face fell into a sort of deadpan expression. A plant? A bloody plant? Someone get this thing off her before she got off to a bad start with that Enviro Department Head because Lex was two seconds away from torching this thing and this bloody maze.

Alexa watched him leaning over, not a care in the world while he examined the plant. Despite having been named the Herbology Champion that one year Lex did NOT, in fact, possess the knowledge to identify them on spot. This was a plant. It did plant things. It burned like every other plant and needed to remember that. Curious how it stopped moving when the light got closer though. And there he went being a Ravenclaw again. Asking questions instead of blasting. "I'll let you know when I start to care." She kicked one leg but quickly stopped when it suddenly tightened again.

Finding she didn't have much in the way of patience for this but that she couldn't set her own leg on fire, Alexa pulled for the severing charm to hack her way free. Hacking, she could do, it was what she did back in her Herbology classes before ending up having to hide the plants to avoid point loss. Cutting herself free, she stood just behind Rhydian and watched.

"What is this?" He seemed to know more than she did.

Rhydian made a face. A very disapproving face. "Seriously, how does one justify, or find any benefit in, attacking children?" Oh wait, he had an answer to that one. Didn't make him feel any better though. In fact, it put him in a right sour mood. "They should just close that school. Too many incidents over the years. More dangerous than....." Well, really he didn't have a good comparison. So he left the rest to grumbling.

Grumbling as Lex decided to sever each vine about her, causing those portions not in the light to coil and tighten and twist. Like those around his shoes. Thanks for that ----- HOLD THE OWL. Rhydian blinked at up at Lex from where he was squatted.

"You're kidding right?' His brand new shoes were going to get crushed and wrecked by vine slime because she had no clue what they were dealing with. "Devil's snare?" Maybe she just had a hard time with visual comprehension. "Twists tighter as you tug, devil's snare?" Any of this ringing a bell.

His frown deepened, and then a thought struck him. And a grin. "Only cure is a good dousing of fire......."

She liked fire didn't she? Blowing things up? Setting things aflame? Blasting curses and stinging hexes and all that good stuff? As long as she didn't scorch his lovely loafers......

Hazel eyes shot to Rhydian with immediacy. Close Hogwarts? "On what grounds? They've had worse, way worse. The school's perfectly safe--or well it's not but they know what they're doing over there. No one ever dies 'cept idiots and overly Gryffindor people." That was Firth. Alexa was a Gryffindor, die hard and all that loyal chivalry but she'd be damned if she threw herself in the way of a Dementor for Ivy Knox when it was a proven fact that Mr. Vinteren would never let anything happen to her.

Nope, she'd have high tailed it OUT of there; let him handle it like she knew he could.

"Met all my favourite people there and all my favourite people are still alive." Which was justification enough in her book.

Also, did he notice the vines creeping up his leg? She did. Now that they were off hers, they found a closer target and it happened to be him. Shame that, even more a shame, cutting seemed to deter it very little. Wait did he just say Devil's Snare? She'd been forced to read about that for her NEWTs! "Well why didn't you say so in the first place?" Lex straightened with the sort of grin that ought not be trusted. The kind that promised a level of recklessness and a thirst for destruction. As it turned out, she WOULD get to torch this thing afterall.

Her caution extended only far enough to see to it she didn't step in the way of the vines before Alexa lit up the aisle they stood in--literally. Cast after cast soon had flames rising high while seeing to it that the vines of the plant either withered or withdrew in it's wake. Even the ones attached to Rhydian had sought shelter elsewhere until they were left alone in a burning walkway, and her more fascinated with the flames than the idea of putting out her handiwork. Brilliant, wasn't it?

There was a time when undignified noises, like snorts, were acceptable. This, was clearly one of those times. So he didn't feel bad when, albiet only for a moment, he ended up sounding more like a hay-fevered horse than anything else.

Shaking his head, Rhydian wiggled his toes in his shoes as he looked down at the vine on his leg. Fascinating. The pair of them. The shoes and the vines. And of course, his partner. His lovely, forgetful partner. "Didn't meet me there."

Matter of fact. To the point. Undeniably true.

And then her question, rehetorical as it was, was lost to that look she got. The flames were second concern, the vines no longer of consequence. For a moment, Rhydian just blinked at Lex as she all but oogled her handi-work. Truth be told, in that moment he was tempted to retreat with the vines, back into the safety of the uh....burning wall?

Kicking the notion soundly out of his head, he instead took Lex's hand, pulled them through the fiery corridor and abruptly cast a good dousing of water behind and around them to put out the inferno. His now-questionable partner got an unreadable look. "You...concern me, sometimes. You know that?"

Never met him where? What was Rhydian going on about?

Lex was trying to pay attention to him but the flames were quite the distraction. Just look at the way they danced across the walkway...could you hear the plant crackling in places that couldn't escape the flames fast enough? It was wonderful. The satisfaction almost as good as a well place explosion. How was he NOT taken in by this right now??

And then they were leaving?? What? Whaaat? But the flames hadn't gone out yet, there was a still a show!

Reluctantly, she let herself be dragged along, somewhat put off by the fact he was steadily getting rid of her fire as they went along. In truth, it was for the best. They were surrounded by plants for walls and that could go wrong any minute. Still sad though.

Her attention turned from the last of the flames dying out to him and the look his was giving her. Might have asked 'what?' but his statement proved enough. "How am I only now concerning you?" Honest question, they'd known each other for all of 7 months or so. "In any case there's nothing wrong with a little harmless fire. Didn't you think it was brilliant? The way it blazed like that?"

No? Just her?

No? Just her?

Her questions did nothing to quell or pacify that look. Only a surviving flame served to distract him, for the whole two seconds it took him to put it out.

"Probably because I've never seen you cast fire before." Did that make more sense? "Nothing wrong at all, with fire. Nope. Fire is wonderful." Kept people warm and vines at bay. Good things. That look on the other hand? Yeah, there was something wrong there.

Tugging on her hand, Rhydian kept them moving, desperately hoping they wouldn't come across any more devil's snares. "Never took you for a pyromaniac."

She could add it to her resume list. Someone somewhere had to have a need for such a talent. Heck, even the MLE would. Time and place was all. Though, he couldn't deny that it had done the job.

Stopping at a four-way intersection, Rhydian pursed his lips. Which way now? Left, right or forward? Suddenly, it was tempting to let Lex light the whole maze on fire. Would certainly make getting out of this place easier. Unless that was the point?

"Think they intend to loose a few new employees in here?" Definitely a good way of culling the herd. Except, of course, when two of their best hires were still trapped inside.

What did that honestly have to do with anything? She didn't think she was any different around fire than how she normally was, leaving her to think Rhydian was making no sense--especially after he agreed that there was nothing wrong with fire--wait what? Lex tilted her head up at him, brows crinkling as she stared. "Who said I was a pyromaniac? I just happen to be able to appreciate fire more than the next guy is all."

No need to go making entire diagnoses Dr. Rhydian.

And could someone tell her why it felt like they'd been walking for miles? Just how big was this maze? WHY did it need to be so extensive? Must have been why they called it a 'diligence' exercise. Well, sorry to burst a couple bubbles but she wasn't diligent and didn't want to be inside this thing much longer. All these walls were starting to bother her; the monotony (save the times they actually ran into things) was starting to bother her so by the time they hit the intersection she was nodding her agreement.

"Yup. Decided the Ministry budget can't pay us all so they're hoping some of us don't make it out. Has to be it. No other reason." With that she pulled him forward, ignoring the paths to the left and right. She...had had enough of lefts and rights for one day thank you very much.

Lex was also decidedly hungry which was even more reason to leave the maze....and even less reason to believe what she was seeing as they got further down the path. Mazes didn't typically have little blonde girls standing in them, least of all one that looked EXACTLY like her sister, nor did they typically have her father who was meant to be at his own job. That being the case, there was one explanation and only one thing to do. "We have to go. Now. Now." Lex spun this way and that trying to find another path they could walk down. It wasn't a dead end by any means but the only way of advancing was the way she didn't want to go.

Did she not understand that was the very definition of a pyromaniac? Probably not. And trying to argue it would be like a dog chasing his own tail. He did that enough on his own, thank-you-very-much.

The reasons behind the maze were much more intriguing, and a point they could both agree upon. He was nodding, and thinking along the tangents such a proposition could have, when Lex suddenly turned into a caged creature. It took him a moment to figure out what had spooked her, and even when he did see it, he didn't understand.

So, despite her tugging and pulling, he stopped. Stopped and stared and tried to discern who he was seeing. No one he knew. Definitely someone she knew. "Lex....."

And then, in an all-too-clear moment, he understood. It was when he had turned to look at her, that he had seen the third addition to the maze from the corner of his eye. The man hadn't aged a day, hadn't changed a bit. The clothes, the shadow of facial hair, the dark crease to his brow, the deep set eyes and the stains dribbled everywhere over him. Dark. Freshly wet.

The only reason he knew the first spell that came to mind wouldn't work, was for the same reason that Lex wanted to run. Memories, in the flesh. Pictures of people they'd rather not see. Images they couldn't battle. The images that made the heart stop in a single, dead beat. Like a drop of rain on a drum.

Why she couldn't handle a man and a young girl, he didn't know. He didn't ask. It didn't matter.

The hole was blown in the hedge wall with little more than a thought, Lex grabbed and shoved through it ahead of him. She liked blowing things up. Perhaps she could do them both a favor and blow them all the way out of the maze. There were no pathways either of them wanted to take. As she said, it was time to go.

Why was he not budging despite her insistence? Sure the only way to go was forward but they didn't have to conform. The only rule was to make it out. At this point, Alexa had every intention to get out and would not be lingering another minute.

Lex all but ignored him saying her name while she tried for an exit. Going back the wrong way could easily have them running into a dementor but going forward.....

Who was that?

She stared for a moment at the newest addition to the maze. A man. He looked a little worse for wear....and actually like he'd just gone through one hell of a thing but that was all she could discern before a hole was blown through the wall and she was being shoved through. The now giggling little girl was all the incentive she needed to put some speed into it. Her wand was raised the moment her feet hit the ground on the other side. "Bombarda!" Another lovely hole.

In the moment, it didn't occur to her that the Boggart could follow them out if it was so inclined, they were just leaving. There was another hole and another until finally she was out in the atrium again, relief and exhaution plain across her features. She waited for Rhydian to make his exit then magicked the hedges to regrow with that one spell she'd been taught a few years back. "I think...we should just get some food." Didn't matter that she'd collected him from the food table earlier, she was hungry now and in no mood to think about or talk about what they'd just seen. Sure she was curious about the man but common sense said not to ask so...food?

Whatever, whoever, it was that had Lex running had his temporary thanks. It meant that he could go nearly full speed at his run and not bowl her over with his long-legged strides. And it meant he didn't have to explain the necessity of just cutting their way out. She understood. No words were needed.

Not until they were out, and even then, it was questionable as to the wisety of such a thing.

Stopping beside her, Rhydian watched the vines regrow over the latest hole, half expecting to see those dark eyes watching out from the growing twigs and leaves. He could imagine them there, though he didn't actually see anything. The memory was potent enough.

His stomach did a flip of protest at Lex's suggestion, forcing him to swallow a fresh bought of bile. How could she think of eating after such an ordeal?

Which made him wonder, who was it? That little girl? That man? The questions prodded him among the assuage of visual images from the maze, from the past. It was starting to make his head hurt. He squinted at her, finding her features a little blurry around the edges.

"Alright." He hoped his voice didn't sound as small as he felt. Hoped his hands would stop shaking soon, but just in case, he stuffed them in his pockets. "Good...job on getting us out...."

He didn't look so good, not at all. Whatever he saw, that man, it must have really had him spooked. Boggarts did that, they showed you the thing you feared the most. For her it was a little different, she was in relatively regular contact with the thing she feared most. It was usually a constant hum in the back of her mind unless she found something to distract her. Work. Wandering. Didn't matter.

For that reason alone recovery wasn't such a hard road for her. It was all a matter of distraction so she wouldn't think about it. That was where the food would come in, even if it didn't look like her partner would be able to stomach much of anything...

Really, was he alright? "Thanks....explosions are kinda my thing..."

With his pockets stuck deep into his pockets, Lex contented herself with folding her arms and nodding back toward the table filled with boring conversation. It was safe there and that was where they were heading.

"Right."

Taking a few steps forward, Olly finally walked into the maze with her wand in her hand. She glanced over her shoulder and raised her eyebrows at the guy. "You're coming, yeah?" Olly could definitely use some backup here.

It wasn't until immediately after Dale had said it that he realised his manners or... whatever they were... might be viewed as something slightly more suspicious. Were they not going straight into a diligence exercise, after all? It occurred to him that suggesting someone else enter first and basically turn their back to him might seem a little dubious.

A year of work being surrounded by Aurors and Hit Wizards had not, as he'd expected, made him as paranoid as them. Instead, Dale found him expecting suspicion from everyone he interacted with. He decided he preferred it.

All those thoughts ran through Dale's head when the young woman stared at him, and he felt... a little awkward. And also like a bit of an idiot, but mostly awkward. But... whew. Okay. "Of course," he replied, giving a nod and stepping into the maze, too.

He was silent for a moment, stepping cautiously ahead, but it had not escaped his notice that Dale didn't know this girl's name or anything. Seemed like something that needed rectifying if they were maze-ing it up together. "I'm Dale, by the way. Dale Upstead. MLE." Just throwing that out there.

Okay good. Because Olly could really use some help there.

Nodding she made sure that they were walking next to each other. So he wouldn't have the chance to hide behind her in case they ran into something dangerous. His next words however earned him an unimpressed look. "You're law enforcement and made me go in first?!" Seriously?

Survival definitely trumped chivalry.

"I'm Olly. Olly Clarke." She glanced at him briefly before focusing on their surroundings again. They weren't too far into the maze yet so it seemed like getting lost was their biggest obstacle. So far.

Dale blinked, deadpan. In his head, there was a silent battle between the two major reactions of 'well that was rude' and 'well actually... she has a point'. He thought about pointing out that it had only been an offer, but, having more than just a modicum of self-restraint, decided against it.

"I'm not one of those Auror types," was what he did say. "I'm more of a desk jockey. Less hero stuff. Tad more selfish, I'm afraid." That last part was a joke. Sort of. Well... it wasn't exactly a lie; he had a tendency to watch his own back, even if it hadn't been his attention walking in here.

"Olly," Dale repeated, so he'd remember it. "Got it." He nodded his head, then craned it, the better to see what was up ahead. He was just opening his mouth to say something else, but suddenly felt something snake around his ankle. He jumped in surprise, tried to leap away from whatever it was (failing, because it had hold of him so tight), and fell face first, SMACK, right on the floor. And that was when he saw the many weird tentacle things of what looked like could be... Devil's Snare. "Uh-huh. Right. Well. Might want to mind your feet, Olly."

Wow... this plant worked FAST. Already had hold of his free hand. But Dale kept his cool and non-verbally light up his wand, brandishing it at the vines and sending the telepathic message that he wasn't above conjuring bluebell flames, either.

At least he was being honest.

Olly definitely liked that about him. So she smirked a little, shaking her head. "You don't really look like the hero-type anyway." But he better be good with his wand or else she'd definitely chosen the wrong guy for this exercise. Not that she had CHOSEN him, it was more out of convenience, you know. But whatever. He was Law Enforcement so he better at least KNOW about things.

Moving further into the maze she tried to make sure that she was aware of-

OUCH!

That had looked painful. Sounded like it, too. Olly tried to turn around to see if Dale was dead hurt but had to realize she couldn't. Her legs were being bound together by Devils Snare too. "Too late." Unlike him she held completely still however - and in turn did not face plant.

Pointing her wand at the spot right next to her feet (she didn't want to accidentally set herself on fire after all) Olly cast the Bluebell Flames charm. Once the plant had released her, she shook out her feet a little before moving over to Dale. "You alright?"
