Default Kitchen

Once you've tickled the pear and turned the knob, the Hogwarts kitchen will be revealed to you. Located directly beneath the Great Hall, the kitchen is a high-ceilinged room with five identical tables to the ones in the dining room above. Unlike the room situated above however, heaped around the walls are large quantities of pots and pans. On one end of the room are shelves of plates and utensils, stoves, sinks, and a large brick fireplace.

Here numerous house-elves are working on the castle's next meal when they aren't tending to their other duties as employees of the school. The team of house-elves have specific assignments to accomplish inside the kitchen, whether it is to cook, wash the plates and cutlery, keep the pantry stocked, place more wood into the fire, or set the tables before everything is summoned to its exact replicas overhead. Though the house-elves are incredibly busy, they will surely serve you a snack ... if you aren't asking Algamus. Or you can, of course, make your own food. Just don't leave a mess behind!

OOC: Please do not role-play for the House-Elves.

Somehow, Tommy had made it to his sixth year. How was beyond him, but he was crediting skipping most meal times as part of it. Being around that many people too often was a sure fire way to ignite the fuse on his far too short temper.

A temper that was particularly short today, for no other reason than he'd woken up and someone had looked at him. He'd spent the day avoiding his classes and now that dinner was winding down he finally decided to head down to the kitchens. Having missed both breakfast and lunch (and as a result the box in his trunk needed replenishing of protein bars), his mood had only grown more foul and the eagerness of the elves did little to help it.

Throwing himself into a chair, he agreed with whatever one of them decided to serve him with an emhatic, "Whatever."

Her eldest sister had made a big deal over the summer about making visits to the kitchens (and had even sent along multiple copies of written instructions for finding it and getting inside). Sophia, therefore, was eager to go there. It was probably the only place in the castle she wasn't worried about getting lost trying to find.

She greeted the house-elves eagerly upon entering, and it didn't take long to notice there was another student in there! Figuring she better not ignore him, she took a seat nearby the older student and greeted him with a friendly smile. "Hullo!" she said brightly. She wasn't sure if it would be rude to ask what he was eating, so instead she just tried not to look too interested in his food. She would get her own when she was hungry

When he heard the entrance of an eager student, Tommy groaned. It wasn't their presence that annoyed him (well, not entirely), but rather the enthusiasm with which they'd greeted the house elves.

He groaned a second time when she sat near him, glaring in a way that he hoped would make her rethink her choice of seat and move rather than responding to her hello. Only then did he turn to the food the elves had placed on the table beside him, pulling the bowl of stew towards himself and tearing off a chunk of bread to dip into it.

At least with his mouth full, she might be less likely to try to engage him in conversation.

Poor little Toddles was hurt. “Master no like steaming bowl of stew?” Toddles’ face lowered so that it brushed his chest. He may not have been the one to have brought the stew for the Master but angry Master still made him sad. Hogwarts children usually are happy to see house elves. Toddles hardly came across any that became cross with house elves. He was sad. “Master prefers something else?” Large eyes turned to the other studentsie. “Stew, young Miss?’’ Toddles asked timidly. He’d bring her something else if she wanted.

Constant Vigilance! O_O AWAKE!

Sophia was disappointed that the older student only glared at her, but she had older siblings! She would not be deterred by a simple glare!! In fact, he was practically inviting her to turn his glare into a....whatever was the opposite of a glare. Plus, his obvious preference for the food over conversation made her even more curious what it was. It must be delicious. When one of the house-elves came over looking incredibly sad, Sophia's eyes widened. She'd never seen a house-elf look sad before. If this was the big older student's fault, he'd have her to answer to!!!

Taking a cue from Toddles on volume, Sophia nodded. "Yes please," she said quietly and as politely as she could. "Stew sounds fantastic, if it's, uh..." she gave a quick concerned glance at the older student, then back to the elf. "If it's not too much trouble."

When the elf came over, Tommy swallowed what he was chewing and tried his best not to roll his eyes. "Don't call me master," he said first, with a small shake of his head. "The food is really good." He meant it, too, even if he sounded as annoyed as he looked when he spoke. "Really good," he added, before taking a big spoonful - which he had to swallow even though it was too hot, just to make his point.

Now his throat hurt, and he was even more annoyed. Annoyed at the elf, and annoyed at himself for wanting to reassure the elf. Mentally shaking himself, he focused on the food, glancing in the younger kids direction as she looked at him.

Toddles observed Tommy through wide eyes. “Toddles is sorry, Ma-. Toddles is sorry.” He just wanted to please the studentsies. Even though Toddles was down his face broke into a toothy smile. “There is much more!’’ Toddles point in the direction of a large cauldron with a thin finger. This was his way of letting studentsie he was welcome to have all the stew he needed.

Toddles was only happy to help Sophia. He zoomed away with a happy little squeak. A short while later Toddles was back holding not one but two dishes. “Stew for the Missus. Garlic bread for the Missus.” With that toothy smile in place the dishes were placed on a table for her. “Toddles make the garlic bread himself!”

What was his stomach telling him right now? To be fair, he hadn't thought about it a whole lot. Logan just knew that it was nearly time for elevenses, which meant that he was due for another visit to the kitchens. Now that Keighley was her and that door had been taking its sweet old time to appear, he supposed he might as well make a plan of action. "Those all do sound good. Maybe a sandwich might be good. And take some cookies to go."

"Nice." He gave the portrait-door a push inward, revealing the kitchens within. "Well, ladies first then." He was feeling gentlemanly today.
There was only a seconds consideration on Keighley's part on Logan's reply. Now that made perfect sense. Even for him. "Smart thinking, no sense in overeating and making yourself sick." Food was great but there always needed to be some sort of limit put into place. It was sad.. but true.

"A sandwich and cookies? I can handle that so we don't have to bother any of the house elves." She offered right away. Anytime she could do something for herself, she did. Not that it always worked out that way, those house elves were pretty much almost always at the very top of their game and came to the rescue with food and drinks. "Do you have a favorite kind of sandwich or anything you really don't like on it?"

Well, well, look at her cousin growing up and being a gentleman! Keigh smiled at him. "Thanks," she hummed happily, slipping past him and stepping into the kitchen to have a look around.

The third year smiled and shook his head in agreement. Yes, that definitely was smart thinking. He could admit (to anyone but Vera) that he was not the smartest when it came to most things. But when it came to matters concerning food, he definitely knew what he was talking about.

An eyebrow rose. She could handle that? Was she offering to put everything together and he could just hang out? If that was the case, then there would be no complaints from him. Though he did have to stifle a laugh. They wouldn't need to bother the house-elves? Well, maybe she didn't need to. He always bothered chatted with the elves, tested whatever they were cooking, and so on. They were pretty much besties at this point (at least in his opinion).

"Oh, come on, Keigh. You know I'll eat practically anything that's put in front of me," Logan stated as he followed her inside the high-ceilinged room. "Buuuuuuut a club sandwich sounds good right now. A thick one."

Studentsies!! More studentsies come to visit Toddles and his friends! The friendly little elf was practically at their sides from the time his huge ears heard the words cookies and sandwich. “It’s no bother, Missus. It’s no bother to Toddles.” Toddles nodded his head so vigorously that his huge ears flapped about. “Master Paton. Come to sample more garlic bread?” Garlic bread was a specialty of Toddles. “We be making a fresh batch soon.”

Perhaps she should consider having more meals throughout the day. Lots of little meals. It would give her even more of a reason to visit to the kitchen. Not that she really needed that.

The eyebrow raise earned a smile from her. What? She was the nice one of the bunch. If preparing some sandwiches herself helped gave the house elves one less thing to do she considered that a win. Also it meant that Logan wouldn't be making a mess. If the house elves wanted to tend to them, she wouldn't say no but she was simply trying to be helpful.

"Yeah, I know." Her cousin would probably eat a plate of rocks if it was set in front of him. Well maybe not but the point was there. "Uhhhhh-huh, I'll see what I can do." Keigh was already looking around the kitchen to see what she could find.

Her search didn't last very long for barely had she gotten anywhere then a house elf was at her side, one she knew right away. "Hello, Toddles. If you're sure it's not bother... we were hoping to get a quick snack. Whatever you like is perfectly fine." She smiled warmly. Sandwiches, cookies, garlic bread. It all sounded wonderful to her!

"Thank you, Toddles," she said. "You don't have to call me missus, either, Sophia is just fine." She wasn't sure if that was usual for the elves, but if the older student said that Toddles didn't have to call him Master, the same went for her.

Scooting closer to the dishes, she took a big sniff. It smelled fantastic. She took a small scoop of stew, blowing gently on it in case it was still hot from the cauldron. She closed her eyes and sighed happily. "It tastes even better than my big sister's cooking!" she said. In her opinion, that was the best compliment one could give a cook. Carefully (she didn't want to burn her mouth), she ate some more stew.

Maybe he would have eaten a plate of rocks, if he was absolutely starving of course. Otherwise, he wouldn't -- believe it or not, Logan had standards. Usually. But in his mind, food was food; he'd give everything a taste at the very least before determining if it was worthy of travelling down to his stomach.

A club sandwich was at the forefront of his mind since Keighley had so graciously offered to make one for him. The Gryffindor was interested to see what she would do with it. Would she stick to the standard ingredients, or would she, like he would if he were making his own, improvise and add more ingredients than were needed? Only time would tell.

Did someone say garlic bread? Hearing a very different voice, Logan quickly looked down to take in the sight of the floppy-eared house-elf. A friendly smile was given to the little creature, pleased to see that he was there rather than a certain other elf. "I can never say no to your garlic bread, Toddles," the boy told him. He wondered if a sanchwich could be made with it...

And the blond still wanted that club sandwich. He'd save it for later.

Missus Anders was the nicest of Hufflepuffs. Toddles nodded vigorously again. No bother. No bother at all. “Garlic bread!’’ Toddles declared loudly. “Perhaps a hot beverage to go along with it? Whatever Missus liked. Whatever Master Paton liked too. “Chicken sandwich? Cheese sandwich?” Enormous green eyes peered at Master Paton. “Turkey and ham?” Toddles knew Master Paton had an enormous appetite. It was best to make him two of whatever sandwich was chosen.

She wasn't sure if that was usual for the elves, but if the older student said that Toddles didn't have to call him Master, the same went for her.

“Sophia.” Little Toddles tried out the name. It was unusual that Toddles called anyone by their name. It wasn’t unheard of though. Toddles smile a wide and toothy grin. “Sophia is welcome!” It was with anticipation that Toddles hovered as Sophia tried out the food. “Toddles is happy that you do! There’s plenty more where that came from. Don’t be shy to let Toddles know if you need more.”

Keighley really didn't have any problems with making Logan and herself something to eat but there wasn't any need for her to be doing that. Which she didn't mind at all at the insistence of the house elf. "Thank you, Toddles. Garlic bread would be lovely.. and perhaps a cup of hot cocoa?" Even she couldn't deny that Toddles made the very best garlic bread and as for hot cocoa it was her absolute favorite drink. Was it possible to drink it all day? No, that might not be the best idea.. surely it would start to upset her stomach after awhile.

The talk of sandwiches remained. "If you're asking Logan's opinion, Toddles, he might want all of those," Keigh laughed jokingly. She also knew of her cousins very large appetite. "Turkey and cheese is always a really nice combination though." Just a suggestion!

All that was on his mind right now was food, which really was starting to make his stomach rumble even though he had eaten breakfast a few hours ago. What could he say? All of the learning he was doing really made him hungry, and there was no way he was going to make it through another class -- Merlin, what class was next? Was it his mum's? -- before lunch. Or was the insane amount of eating a sign of another growth spurt? Perhaps it was a bit of both.

When Toddles rattled off all the options, the Gryffindor thought all of them sounded excellent. The garlic bread was a must, considering it was the elf's specialty. His cousin's suggestion of hot cocoa was not a surprise to him, but that actually did sound quite nice with it being the winter season. As for the sandwiches, how in the world was he supposed to choose?

"She's not wrong," he agreed to Keigh's statement about him wanting all of the sandwiches that had been mentioned. "Club sandwiches were mentioned outside, but I'll take what she's having." Logan grinned. When it came to food, he was not picky at all. "And I'll take some to-go for later. Those can be whatever you'd like, Toddles. It'll be a nice surprise."

Toddles had a great memory. Little Toddles really did. This was how all those requests were made possible. Studentsies never had to complain about them. “Garlic Bread. Hot Cocoa.” Toddles violently nodded his head again. “True. Master Paton has big appetite.” Possibly the hugest. “Toddles be right back with all the foodsies for studentsies!”

True to those words Toddles came back minutes later carrying a silver platter filled so much that there wasn’t space to actually see the silver beneath. “Cups of hot cocoa! Ham and Turkey sandwiches! Garlic Bread!’’ Toddles was quite delighted to be serving such a spread today.

“Toddles will have those sandwiches fixed for taking.” A few of each would be just right for the studentsies. [/COLOR]

This Hufflepuff right here really liked Toddles. She knew that when it came to garlic bread, they were going to be getting the best there was. Not to mention sandwiches and hot cocoa too. This was snack heaven and she was such to be stuffed afterwards but wasn't that the point?

Keighley sat down at one of the tables as they waited for Toddles to return (not that the adorable little house elf would take long). "I really don't know where you put it all, Logan. If I ate even close to the amount of food that you ate.. I'd be sick all of the time." His daily consumption of food was likely how much food she ate in three days. Yes, yes, she got that he was a 'growing boy' and all that.. but still!

When Toddles returned with a large platter piled high with food, Keigh smiled thankfully at him. "This is amazing, Toddles! Thank you so much!" Were they really meant to eat all of this? Okay, they would eat it all but that was only because she had her cousin with her.

Seconds after the words were spoken, the blond watched the little elf disappear to make the necessary snack preparations. Logan was always a fan of how speedy the school elves were, but Toddles in particular was probably his favourite elf. No questions were asked whenever he wandered into the kitchen with a food request, and he was always given more than what was needed.

The third year joined his cousin and sat down at the table, chuckling at her comment. "You and everyone else have the same thoughts," he responded with a shrug. "Even I don't know how I do it. Maybe it's the result of an Undetectable Extension Charm of some sort." The odds of that were unlikely, but his stomach seemingly being a bottomless pit may lead one to briefly consider such a thing.

In no time at all (How long had that been? Just a few minutes?), a feast was placed before them. The boy's blue eyes widened with glee and both hands instantly inched toward the platter, one hand grabbing a piece of garlic bread and the other a sandwich. "Mmm. You're the best, Toddles," Logan managed to thank the house-elf with his mouth full of food.

Toddles beamed toothily. “Welcomes welcomes!” Toddles bowed. Such praise and gratitude! Toddles found this rewarding. He bent his upper half in a low bow. “Toddles will be over there baking chocolate muffins should master and missus need anything else.” Nodding furiously so that his ears flapped once more Toddles trotted away before Logan could object to being called master yet again.
