Kitchen

Once you've tickled the pear and turned the knob, the Hogwarts kitchen will be revealed to you. Located directly beneath the Great Hall, the kitchen is a high-ceilinged room with five identical tables to the ones in the dining room above. Unlike the room situated above however, heaped around the walls are large quantities of pots and pans. On one end of the room are shelves of plates and utensils, stoves, sinks, and a large brick fireplace.

Here numerous house-elves are working on the castle's next meal when they aren't tending to their other duties as employees of the school. The team of house-elves have specific assignments to accomplish inside the kitchen, whether it is to cook, wash the plates and cutlery, keep the pantry stocked, place more wood into the fire, or set the tables before everything is summoned to its exact replicas overhead. Though the house-elves are incredibly busy, they will surely serve you a snack ... if you aren't asking Algamus. Or you can, of course, make your own food. Just don't leave a mess behind!

OOC: Please do not role-play for the House-Elves.

For Chells & Jude's BFF! <3

“I hope you know that I’ll just be throwing back while you do all the cooking,’’ Jude remarked, trying his best to hold back a laugh. He turned the freshly- appeared knob and gestured Evan into the kitchen. Only then did he enter, shutting the door behind him. Ah, the Hogwarts kitchen! It was so warm and the air was filled with all sorts of tantalising smells. It reminded him of the Anders’ and the many baking/cooking sessions he had had and continued to have with his mother.

Jude waved an enthusiastic hello to the adorable little elves before turning his attention back to Evan. After finding out that he and the other boy shared the same favourite food, he had offered to teach the Ravenclaw to make it. Jude figured that when Evan was out in the world after graduation, he could make his own Shepherd’s pie whenever he wanted. And maybe Evan wouldn't forget about him this way. “I’ll teach you the recipe my mom taught me. We usually use corn, carrots and peas but are there any other vegetables you might want to substitute, Ev?” While waiting on the reply, the sixth year made himself useful by locating the necessary utensils they’d need.

"I would expect nothing less from you." A soft snort from the seventh year as he grinned at his best friend, before pushing himself from the table he'd been relaxing against while Jude got things ready. Evan didn't mind being in the kitchens, a past time he'd actually always loved with Halmeoni, but this was a recipe he had not yet learned. He probably should have asked Appa or someone earlier to teach him how to make it, but like a typical offspring he'd just usually allowed his parents to make it for him. You know, the easy way of doing things.

Truthfully, Evan would probably not have much opportunity to cook for himself after school - nothing beyond basic minimal meals. The cooking equipment would be limited while he was on the boat. And for the first few months after summer, he was planning on living on it solely - with potentially Blake's company if the former Gryffindor decided to take the gap year to travel as well. But it didn't hurt to know how to make some of his favorite things for later. Odds were, he would end up at university at some point. "No, those actually sound perfect. I can't think of anything else that might be a good addition." He briefly considered kimchi for some spice, but he could add that on the side if it was something he was truly interested in trying. Not knowing quite where to start while Jude bustled around, Evan just got them each a glass of water. Hydration was important.

“Rude!” It was Jude’s reply {along with a chuckle} to Evan’s word and that snort of his. Of course he knew Evan’s comment had been in jest but the Hufflepuff did sort of mean it when he said that Evan would be doing most of the work. How else was Evan going to learn, right? It was really nice they could have these lighthearted moments. Actually, it just wasn’t the moments anymore but rather EVAN. There was something about him that had been changing bit by bit for a while now; something for the better. Jude had been observing it all the while and it had made him so very happy to see these changes.

In this moment, Jude just felt grateful to his mother for teaching him to cook and bake because this meant he would always be able to share his knowledge with anyone who wanted it. ALSO he got to make what his Hufflepuff heart craved while at Hogwarts. “Awesome!” the sixth year exclaimed happily before going off to find the veggies. “Got your eight glasses of water in, then?” came his question as he came back to the table, carefully laying out the packs of fresh veggies. “Because those potatoes sure aren’t about to peel themselves without some help.” His lips twitched because he was having a good time troubling the bestie. “I’ve decided to take pity on you so I’ll help with the onion.” Not that it would be hard work since Jude was more than capable of using magic to assist him out in the kitchen.

Evan just grinned at him in response - not at all minding that he would be actually doing the majority of the work. Wasn't that the point anyways? He was supposed to be the one learning, which would mean hands on practice. Ev had noticed the change in himself as well, and it was entirely welcomed. He felt... lighter at Hogwarts, this year in particular. And after years of chipping away at it, he no longer felt the resentment about the magical part of his life. There had been enough good now between him and the room that'd he'd been able to separate his anger and fear and realize there was benefits to this part of his life as well.

Glancing at the water glasses at the question, Evan took his and downed it before looking back at the Hufflepuff. "Do you?" Before pointedly looking at the other glass as well. Potato peeling? The bane of his existence. But at least there was spells for that. Grabbing a large bowl, Evan filled it with water so he could rinse all the potatoes off before dividing them into a handful for him to complete by hand, and casting a spell to have the others working automatically. Naturally, the first thing he had made sure to master over the summer with the trace no longer on him was things to make life at home easier. If he was going to have magic, might as well capitalize on it. "A generous soul you are." It was said teasing, but also meant it. The sting of onions was not one of Evan's favorite things.

At least they were on the same page about Evan doing the majority of the work. Jude wouldn’t put it past the other boy to use that Ravenclaw brain of his to memorise the ingredients and instructions anyway. Truthfully, Jude wasn’t sure why he hadn’t mentioned those changes to Evan as yet. He supposed he didn’t want to make things weird between them by getting too sentimental. He knew though that he wouldn’t be able to keep the words he wanted to say too much longer to himself; keeping something positive about someone else quiet was not something he could do. Especially when it came to Evan. If his best friend only knew how long he had been waiting to see this side of him… And while Jude had loved that solemn, reserved version of Evan, he knew he would grow to love this more relaxed version. He had meant what he had told Evan two summers ago, he had loved him at his worst. Therefore, he would love him at his best too. Jude was here for Evan being the best version of himself.

Um… “No, I didn’t.” Chuckling, Jude grabbed the glass. “Thanks for looking out for me.” He downed half of the glass since it was all he could manage at that point; the rest would be downed sometime shortly. He then watched for a bit as Evan used magic to get things going with the potatoes. Really, the bestie was not bad with the spells; Jude was impressed. “So, they have to be cut in quarters when they’re done being peeled.” Waving his own wand and muttering an incantation, the Hufflepuff got another knife working on peeling and chopping the onion. “I know,’’ he commented brightly. Yes, this guy knew his worth. While all those things were being done, he filled a pot with enough water that would cover the potatoes and set a flame under it. Sometime after, when the water was heated, a teaspoon of salt was added and dissolved. Jude explained all of this to Evan carefully as they worked. “Think that big brain of yours got all that information? Who am I kidding? I bet it did!” He pretended to be grumpy now. “You should have lent it to me for OWLs. I would have scored all Os like you did!”

Chelliephone 09-11-2022 12:23 AM

When it was your favorite food on the line, knowing the ingredients themselves was pretty easy - maybe outside of the spices. And while his mind was probably decently okay with memorization of instructions too, much like in potions there's no way he'd ever be comfortable free forming it. There was a great comfort in having the steps written down before you. It was assurance of doing what you were supposed to. Wouldn't it have been nice if life had one of those too?

Evan smiled at the thanks and gave a nod of his head. "Making sure you drink a glass of water is like.. the bare minimum of repayment I could do for how much you've had to look out for me." It was a small smile, but fully sincere. Evan wasn't blind to the fact he had to have been difficult to be a friend too, with how hard of a time he'd always had letting people in. Jude had always gotten the farthest, and Evan was most comfortable with him. But he wasn't a fool, and the more relaxed he felt this term and had an easier time with others, he also realized how difficult of a time it must have been for Jude. As the next instruction was given, Evan nodded his head in understanding, abandoning his manual peeling to let the spellwork take over while he cut those that were finished into the instructed quarters. "Like this?" He looked for clarification a couple of potatoes in, just in case. He continued on with his work, chuckling softly at Jude's tease before shaking his head. "My brain only was successful with OWLs because I ate, slept and breathed studying. It wasn't healthy and I probably would not recommend to anyone." Nor was he planning on replicating the performance for NEWTs, even if that meant less than perfect scores. "Besides, you did really well on your OWLs as it is."

Jude was surprised, and a little thrown. It was often… okay fine, there hadn’t been instances where Evan had expressed himself so candidly. At least not with the Hufflepuff. It also hit him that Evan really did realise how much Jude had been looking out for him. It was… gratifying, heartwarming. Yes, there had been so many times when he felt as though he was losing his best friend to all the things that consumed him, or when Jude felt as though he was never doing enough to help Evan. The memory that stuck to him the most was their talk in the Aviary a few terms ago, when Jude had first suggested that Evan have a talk with his parents. “It’s what best friends do,’’ Jude replied, returning the smile with one of his own. It was then that Jude understood what was happening: Evan was changing - for the better. The realisation stunned him because he knew with all his heart that the old Evan - the version he knew - would not have said something like that. FINALLY. IT. WAS. HAPPENING. Jude had been waiting for this, wanting the bestie to be the best, happiest version of himself. Being the empath that he was, Jude wanted to tear up. Out of sheer happiness, of course.

The Hufflepuff hastily turned away, swiping at his eyes to get rid of the tears that had been pooling there before they could spill over. Yeah, he didn’t want to ruin the good time he and Evan were having because he couldn’t keep himself from getting overemotional as always. He blinked rapidly before turning back to the Ravenclaw. “Yup, you got it, Ev! Once they’re all done, you can add them to the water.” Jude headed over to the nearest oven, where he proceeded to do the necessary to get it preheated. “That’s true. Gosh, you’re such a nerd.’’ He was still teasing because there was nothing wrong with being a nerd. “I’m awfully proud of your grades. I mean, it’s not everyone who gets to say their bestie got perfect grades at a major exam!” Now his attention was on a pan as he lit a flame beneath it. It was time to saute those veggies! “Thanks! I did my best!” Given all that he had had going on in his life at the time.

With a wooden spoon, the sixth year melted some butter in the pan then added the onions.

And just for the fun of it…

While waiting for those onions to cook, Jude casually used his want to fling a piece of chopped carrot at Evan’s head. This was followed a single pea. Hoping that Evan hadn’t noticed his actions, he turned back to the stove, pretending as though he hadn’t just assaulted the seventh year in the head with two pieces of veggies.

Chelliephone 09-17-2022 04:18 AM

Expressing himself had always been a difficulty for Evan, showing gratitude or emotion to others even more so. The people who'd always gotten the most candor from him, were his siblings. Perhaps his parents when he'd been younger and awestruck of them in their infinite wisdom. He'd thought he'd been healing from his past traumas, and while he'd made steps... it was only now that the Ravenclaw could tell he truly was getting past all the scars and changing into a more light hearted version of himself. Studies were important, books and memorization had been easy. But at the end of the day, where was that truly going to get him if he couldn't tell the people who mattered that they did? Or he couldn't really openly people to get to know him? The important of experiences and social relations was even more impressed upon him given the fact he was a mere months away from the end of his Hogwarts career and what did he currently have to show for it? Perfect OWL scores.

But with no idea on his future and if those would even matter.

So while he knew Jude's words were right and it was just something friends did for each other. The fact of the matter was Jude never had to be Evan's friend and put away with his shenanigans. He just cared and had done so. And it was something Evan had a vast amount of unshared gratitude regard. "Sure, but you still didn't have to. I appreciate you. And everything you've done." He smiled at the Hufflepuff, before going back to his potatoes as Jude had turned away for a moment to busy himself with prepping the rest of the kitchen.

Finishing up his cutting of the growing pile of peeled potatoes, he tossed them into the water pot as instructed. "Done. Then what?" A laugh at the teasing, because it was... 100% spot on. He WAS a nerd, and he was fully aware of it. "You're not wrong. I'm not really living up to that expectation so far this term. It's kind of nice." Was the homework a little more stressful because he waited so long? Yes. But then it wasn't so bad because he reminded himself it didn't have to be perfect. "Perfect scores are only important if you need them for your degree." Which... who knew if he would. "You're the more impressive one. You got good scores AND you still managed to have a life." Best of both worlds.

Ev was scrapping up all of the potato peelings when he felt a few things bounce off the back of his neck. Considering his wand was no longer moving, unless it was raining veggies there could only be one perpetrator in the room. With a bemused expression, Evan turned to face Jude again, lifting the offending carrot in the air. "Was this yours?"

Education and studies were important, yes. That’s why Jude would always be proud of Evan and those perfect OWL scores of his, and whatever academic merits he achieved after. But what he was going to be prouder of was the fact that Evan was making progress on himself. Jude was now thinking about his conversation with Kimmie, he remembered her words about him being himself had helped Evan. He remembered telling her that if it were indeed the case, then he would never know because Evan was not one to talk of sentimental things such as this. How wrong Jude had been, and he made a mental note to write to his newest friend to let her know that she had been right.

It was true. Jude didn’t have to be Evan’s friend when he found out just how affected the Ravenclaw had been because of the trauma. Jude could have walked, his feelings could have been diminished. Clearly none of those things had happened. If anything, his feelings had intensified. Said feelings, of course, would now remain hidden since he was determined not to bother Evan again about them; especially since Evan had been clear on his own feelings {or lack of}. Oh, there was still some hope in Jude but he quickly pushed the thought away because there had been a pang of guilt then. Him thinking like this wasn’t fair to Davet.

Was Evan trying to make him dissolve into a full out cry fest? The Hufflepuff was determined not to do so, at least not right now. He couldn’t help but smile, his heart and soul happy as can be. “Thank you, Ev. It means a whole lot to hear this. And you’re welcome. You know I’ll always have your back.” Even when Evan was away figuring things out, even when he had things figured out. “Great! Turn them on occasion to ensure they get boiled equally. They’ll take about twenty minutes to boil.”

Jude snorted. “It’s nice to not live up to expectations at all times indeed. That sort of pressure… it’s daunting. We’d love you the same even if you got a T. Anyway, there will be plenty of time for studies and you know I’ll be around to help you with that.” It would be the last time they studied together at Hogwarts, after all. “In that case, you’ve got them. Perfect NEWTs or not, you’ll still be able to do your degree if that’s what you want." Jude bat his eyelashes playfully. “Oh, stop it, you!’’ He laughed. “It wasn’t easy. Hmm… I think it’s all about time management and prioritisation.” Which would be something else he would be willing to help Evan do should th indeed arise.

The sixth year pretended to be tending to the onions which were coming along quite nicely. He turned away from the stove to meet Evan’s eyes, pulling a puzzled expression on his face at the question. “Uh… I own no carrots, sorry.” Biting the inside of his cheek, he tried not to laugh. “It probably came from the pack here? But how ever did THAT happen?” Such a mystery!

Chelliephone 10-02-2022 09:21 PM

Evan just nodded his head, knowing full well that Jude did always have his back - and hoping the Hufflepuff knew the sentiment was reciprocated. He was then distracted by the instruction provided, and turned a couple of the potatoes before setting a time near the stove top for 10 minutes. He'd turn them all again halfway through to ensure the boiling had been sufficient.

"You might have. But I certainly would not have forgiven myself for a T." He wrinkled his nose at the idea of it, before shaking his head as if to chase it away. He'd studied so hard for so long, even with only the average student effort this term he was expecting to at least get all A's and above. And while an A wasn't his favorite idea... welll, it would do. He didn't really want to sacrifice anymore of his Hogwarts experience on being stuck in the library for longer than necessary. Even if he DID love the library. "I'm sure I won't get perfect this time around. But I'm pretty confident I'll get what's necessary." And not much was necessary at all to go sailing next year. "How do you usually figure your prioritization? Where's the line on how much time to spend with people vs how much time to spend on schoolwork?"

He was still eying him suspiciously, before reaching over and taking a small chopped piece of onion and flicking it towards Jude. "Hmm, I think the onions might be having the same type of problem. Must be Peeves." Their resident scapegoat.

“You’re always too hard on yourself,’’ Jude remarked gently. “Having a bad grade doesn’t define you.” But he sort of understood Evan’s worry; being such a studious person, it would be devastating to Evan receiving a fail grade. “Maybe you won’t but you certainly will pass each subject!’’ The Hufflepuff was confident of this much. He doubted Evan would ever flunk anything, anyway. That was so impossible! The question was considered. “Honestly? I’m not sure. I suppose it depends on how much time I spend studying. Three hours of studying is the most I can do at once so after that, I’d hang out with someone for about half an hour? Forty five minutes? It also depends on who the person is. You, Keighley and Reagan get more of my time, for example. Plus it helps that you three are always willing to help me study so… you guys get all of my time practically.” Jude laughed in amusement because he had never realised just how much his time gets occupied between the people he cared about and studies.

The sixth year instinctively shielded his face as the onion piece zoomed his way. “Hey!” Then he was laughing again as it hit his elbow. “Better watch out that he doesn’t start a food fight. I doubt the elves would be happy with us.” He threw Evan a grin as he discarded the onion.

Now that the onions in the pan were almost done, Jude added the carrots, peas and corn. After that had cooked a bit, the beef was added to the mix and then the pan was covered so that the beef could properly cook. “Okay, you can use a fork to check the potatoes, Ev. If they’re tender enough, add them to this bowl here…” He indicated to a large bowl with some butter at the bottom. “Then just mash them all together. Don’t forget the salt and pepper!”

They were in the homestretch now which was a good thing because this Puff was working up an appetite!

"Maybe not define me but... a T? That would require me having not paid attention at all." He hoped he'd pass everything. He was still paying attention in class, and his homework DID still get done and turned in. He just was enjoying life instead of sticking his nose into a book 24/7. Ahh, well... combining the social and study time certainly did seem to make the most sense - which Evan find himself nodding too. A good portion of his friends outside of Jude were in the same year, perhaps he should have been utilizing study groups like he had in the past. And even for those he'd never been particularly close to... an hour here or there with his year mates before they were all scattered and probably not seeing each other again could be good. "That's a good plan. It just sounds exhausting too to study for so long, and then spend time with someone, and then there's not much time for just you to fit in before sleep and... doing it all over again." At least until weekends.

Ahh, that was a fair point. He turned after his small onion attack, giving a smile to the house elves bustling around in apology. "Yeah, you're probably right. But I still think you started it." He teased.

Picking up a fork, he stabbed at one of the potatoes as instructed - finding the utensil to cut in smoothly and not experience any resistance. He put down the fork, then moving the spuds into the indicated bowl and grabbing the potato masher tool. He started mashing, pushing up his sweater sleeves to do so, and tried to get the bowl looking at least half way clumped before throwing in some salt and pepper and mashing all over again. It took some time to get them the right consistency he wanted, but they were starting to look pretty good. "Do you add any milk to this?" He knew his Appa usually added some dairy to make the potatoes creamier when they were having mashed potatoes - but he was also planning to follow Jude's recipe to a T.

“It would. And I know that’s not you but I’m just trying to let you know that we’d love you all the same no matter your grades.” Jude paused then offered an afterthought, his head tilted a bit as he usually did it. “Grades don’t define you. What matters is your heart, I suppose. How good you are to others.” He bobbed his head a bit, a grin slowly spreading across his face. “I think we need more hours in the day just for socialising. I mean, it’s a crime having to study this much. Imagine what it’ll be like when we have our careers. We might end up not seeing much of each other.” As it had over the summer when he had been talking with Kimmie, there was a panicked voice in his head when Jude thought of him and Evan drifting away. This time, the voice was slightly louder but he smothered it and shoved it in a box. That was something he wasn’t keen on dealing with right now.

That best friend of his was smart, even if Jude was the only likely source of abusing him with bits of food. “Pfffft! Show me your proof, Ev!’’ Ugh! He really adored that Ravenclaw! It was difficult not to be teasing him so often. At least Evan was a good sport with putting up with all of that.

While Evan continued working on the potatoes, Jude returned his attention to the cooking meat and vegetables. He added careful measurements of seasonings, Worcestershire sauce and beef broth then let it finish up simmering. “We don’t. There’s enough… uh… juices? from the meat and veggie mix so that the pie’s not dry.” The Hufflepuff dished a tiny amount of the mix out, gave a quick puff on it then popped it into his mouth. “Hey, Ev? Come here for a bit, please.” Using a fork, another small amount of the mix was speared out. “Any seasonings you want to add?” Jude knew that the Ravenclaw knew a thing or two about that. He held the fork up, leaving it to Evan to decide if he actually wanted to take the fork or simply eat right off it while it was held.

Evan knew it was his friend just trying to be helpful, and his arguments were inconsequential anyways which was why he just settled on a grateful smile instead of pointing out that grades DID in some ways offer definition. At least they would in the ways that after school might come to matter - careers primarily which could affect a lot of other different areas of life. But even thinking on it too much might have got him panicking and thinking his plan to sail and take time (and even his plan of being here currently and not in a book) was a bad one. So instead, he just focused on the words that seemed the only really necessary to say. "We'll figure out times to hang out as well, I'm sure. Even next year I'll probably try to come for your Hogsmeade visit." Both to see Jude and his sisters. "And after that there will be a lot of responsibility but we'll figure it out, I'm sure." Besides... if he still didn't have things figured out, it would probably be Jude who would be the one who was far too busy.

Cue the suspicious eyes here, because Ev was sure Jude knew just as well as he did he HAD no proof. So instead, he childishly just stuck his tongue out at him. So... there.

"Oh, that makes a lot of sense." He responded, watching for a moment all the ingredients being added into the pot Jude was working on. Pushing his bowl of potatoes to the side, he moved towards the Hufflepuff at the request, glancing into the bowl and feeling his stomach growl in appreciation. Mm. It all did look good. He considered seasonings for a moment, not even thinking twice about just eating the bite from the pro-offered fork as he did so. "Hmm. Do you think there are any fresh herbs lying around in here? A sprig of rosemary and thyme might be good."

Why was Evan so stubborn? He just didn’t see what Jude meant. Grades were important in some manner, yes, but overall? Not as much because life was so much more. Maybe his friend would see that in the future. Or maybe Jude would see how important grades were for further studies. He knew it was his talent that mattered and that it was said talent that would mainly determine his entry to WADA. “We’ll figure it out,’’ the hufflepuff repeated. It was more for himself so that he could push that panicky feeling away. “I’d like that. It’ll be the first year I’ll be at Hogwarts without you. The same for Lisa and Maya too.” So yes, Evan. A visit would be great. His brain kept repeating ‘we’ll figure it out’ which is oddly soothing to him. Not for once had it ever occurred to him that he might be the busier one. Why? Because in his mind, Jude always knew he would make time for the relationships that mattered to him.

The sixth year wanted to collapse out of sheer mirth and laughter at Evan’s reaction. Merlin! This side of his bestie was SO refreshing! May there be many, many more good days like this for the Ravenclaw.

That was completely true! It all DID look good! Not to mention the aroma! Quite the little feast awaited these two. Jude too didn’t think too much of Evan eating right off the fork. They were close with each other so this sort of thing was more than okay. He, however, could not help but be attentive to Evan’s handsome face while he tasted the mix. See, this was why another opinion was important! “I saw some earlier. Hang on…” A minute later, Jude was back, a grin on his face and a sprig each of rosemary and thyme. “As recommended. One sprig of rosemary.” Into the pan it went. “One sprig of thyme.” That followed in as well. “This should be done soon. In the meanwhile, can you find us a deep baking dish, Ev? Please and thanks.” Then they could get to layering the potatoes and meat/veggie mix!

If there was anything that gave Evan a high dose of anxiety, it was constantly remembering that next year would be the first year for the girls without him there. He remembered being younger and the fear of not having Noah there anymore to look after him. Leaving the girls behind made him even more fearful, and he had a whole new appreciation for the eldest Nam sibling. He'd been leaving all three of them, and they'd all been much younger than Maya's 17 and Lisa's 16. How had they all gotten so old already? "I'll definitely be around. And... even on the water, I'll still have my mirrors." Letters... he wasn't sure how easily owls would find them while on the water, but... it wouldn't be impossible. Right?

Evan had to resist the urge to steal another bite when Jude's back turned to find the herbs, but somehow he was able to conjure the very little self restraint he had before the Hufflepuff came back over and added them in. That seemed a good reason to steal another, so using the fork he did just that - tasting again and giving a nod of approval. "Perfect." And even more so when the herbs had time to marinate and really add flavor. Hearing the request, he did some digging around - locating a pan and pulling it out and bringing over. "This one good?"

Jude got that; he really did. Hogwarts wasn’t always the safest of places and that knowledge was bound to make anyone who cared nervous and anxious. It made sense that Evan be worried that much about his sisters since the Ravenclaw had suffered so much thanks to the Neo Alliance. Jude himself was not thrilled to be leaving Keighley behind when the time came. He and Evan would still be able to communicate; it felt reassuring to be reminded of that. He nodded, smiling a bit. “Then I’ll check it at times with you and you can tell me all about your adventures.” Maybe he wouldn’t bother Evan regularly because he wanted his friend to be out there living his life without much interruptions. However, Jude did have a brainwave at that moment: he’d get Evan a scrapbook so that all the memories in the year post - Hogwarts could be documented. Yes! That was THE perfect idea!

The boys were one step closer finishing this meal! By now, Jude was feeling rather ravenous and was quite certain that he alone could consume at least half the pie by himself. “That's just the right one! Now we get to the layering.” After quickly lining the bottom of the dish with parchment paper, the first layer of meat and veggie mixture was added. “You can add the first bit of potatoes now. After you’re done, I’ll do this mix again and so on until we’re done.” Afterwards, it all would be popped into the oven!

There would probably be plenty to say, and yet at the same time it might be boring at moments. There might be moments of his seventh years friends, the limited group that it was, joining him and that would probably be more... eventful. But for the most part, Evan really was just expecting to have some time to himself to figure out what came next. The sailboat was just one of the best ways he could think of to be a hermit. And truly, considering it had been previously lived in - it was truly made to be comfortable. "I'll send pictures." When there was anything to send a photo of.

The Ravenclaw stood by and waited while Jude began the layering, before reaching for a spoon in order to put a generous layer of potatoes on top of the meat mixture before stepping back to let Jude take over again. "My stomach is definitely excited that we are near the end of finishing this up." As if on cue, it gave a large rumble which he attempted to calm by reaching for his glass of water to take a large gulp.

Jude simply nodded. Even if Evan didn’t get to send pictures often, then a scrapbook would be perfect for showing all the memories when Evan returned and whenever he felt like reconnecting with Jude. The Hufflepuff didn’t doubt for a second that there would be lots to photograph: some rare bird, another boat, funnily shaped clouds, not to mention selfies of Evan… yes, there would be lots.

The pair really did make an excellent team, not just during lessons it seemed for this dynamic duo managed to finish layering up the Shepherd’s Pie in no time! “Just half an hour more,’’ the younger boy remarked happily. “Thank Merlin, otherwise I would collapse from hunger.” Just joking! He was only being dramatic. The dish was stuck in the preheated oven and the door was shut. “No snacking in the meanwhile, Ev. Water’s fine but you’re saving your appetite.” There was a bit of playful finger wagging on his part before the most annoying part of cooking began - cleaning up.
