Default Divination Lesson One: Insect Invasion

It was a cool October morning and the grass was still wet, not found of her morning class slot, Professor Euka was making the best of it by doing some lessons that went better in the morning. The fall chill made her wear her teal cloak and bring a larger coffee.

As students began to come for the lesson they will find yoga mats scattered in a semi circle waiting for someone to sit on them and even maybe meditate waiting for the lesson to begin. The morning sun did look beautiful over the lake and students could just take in the peacefulness that these types of settings bring.

Lesson Progress:
Good morning
What did you hear
Find the bugs
Predict the insects
What do insects mean

SUMMER FOREVER

Valentina had been busy staring at the beetle, kind of half asleep at this point because. this was just so boring! She watched the little creature climb onto a tiny rock nearby and just sit there for a few minutes. It definitely didn't look like it was upto anything interesting so she looked around a bit, distracted. Oooh. Wait. That butterfly looked so pretty. Maybe she should watch it instead. The blonde turned her focus towards the butterfly now, looking very curious. Maybe it was sleeping.. did butterflies sleep?? She had no idea.

Hey, Nam. WE HAVE A NAME!

Though it wasn't so much the Flamsteed name as it was the pen poking that woke him up - much more firmer than the dainty legs of the grasshopper that was settled along his hairline now. Stirring with an unpleasant groan, though thankfully poked awake before the dreams settled in, the third year's eyes fluttered lazily open and found himself looking up at the blue sky. Though there were more clouds in it than he would have liked.

"Wot?" He had heard...but also hadn't really heard and it took him a bit, along with overhearing some of his peers shuffling around, to remember that he had gone down to the grounds for Divination class and that was still where he was. "Wot?" Repeats again, sitting up and glancing around. "Class dismissed?"

His forehead feeling a little itchy, from the grasshopper, Atlas reached up to scratch it and felt his fingers brush against the insect who then launched themselves off his head and disappeared into the grass. There were other issues though...and that was the ants he had previously been aware of. His back felt itchy..and so he was reaching around and trying to scratch it but his arms couldn't quite reach the sweet spots that needed the most tending to.

follow me; everything is all right.

As students kept observing insects a few flitterby landed on a few flowers as one of the student walking around disturbed a nest full of wasps that came swarming at a few of the students.

On the other side of the lake if students were watching they might find one or two Vampyr Mosp flying around. Though a few of the frogs hanging by the lake might be taking in the sight of the insects more than the children.

1/2 of Roston ~ Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Pirate Princess ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

SPOILER!!: Question 2 catchup
Heath watched the stick insect slowly inch up his arm. He was so distracted by the creature that he completely forgot he was supposed to be listening (meditating?) until Professor Euka's voice jerked him out of his thoughts. He listened to his classmates answers to the question, thinking back to what he'd heard before the insects distracted him. It was a lot of the same things the others did… birds, wind, etc.

He had no idea how those sounds would make him a better diviner… not that he thought he was a good one in the first place! The only answer he could think of was that maybe paying attention to sounds could help them learn to tune out distractions and become more observant, which could help in divination because a lot of methods involved observing signs. Was that anywhere close to what Euka was looking for? Not feeling at all confident that it was, he kept quiet.

Entomancy? That name didn’t sound like anything to do with insects; it sounded like some obscure medical procedure! Weird name aside, the activity did sound interesting. Heath glanced at the stick insect, which had now crawled its way up his arm and perched on his shoulder. Could he keep observing this insect? It was rather cute… you know, for something that looked like a moving stick. He held out a finger, waited for the stick insect to crawl onto it, and gently set it down.

Taking care not to hurt any other insects that might still be around, he got up from the mat and followed the stick insect as it inched along the ground farther and farther away until it came to a bush. Now what was it going to do? He watched as it crawled up a branch and began munching greedily on a leaf. Heath smiled. This insect reminded him a bit of a character in a muggle children’s book… except that had been a caterpillar, not a stick insect! Eat up, little guy, he thought as he watched it chow down.

Reckon Divi wasn't the worst. He'd imagined a bunch of girls chatting in circles about howfleos and copernicuses were meant for one another because Pluto ( #vivalapluto ) was doing somersaults this season. Instead, it was bugs and fresh air. Ruari didn't think he minded it.

"Oi, Atlas... You dancing, mate?" Ruari said, running over to his brother's greatest foe and immediately mimicking his actions.

Of course, this was when a wasp the size of his fist came flying his way. "Bloody hell-" He screeched, ducking down to his knees to avoid the vicious insect. "PROFESSOR. ARE THOSE MURDER HORNETS." He loudly asked, trying to keep his voice mostly calm so as to keep the deadly insects from coming his way.

It certainly would have been more helpful had he stayed to make sure the sleeping students actually awakened, and then he would have seen Atlas' confusion and been able to explain they were not actually done with class yet. But as it was, he was far more preoccupied now with observing his new beetle friend.

Though truth be told, he knew nothing about beetles. So when the remark was stated to take note if they were doing something specific to type of bug.... he had no idea. It was sitting there. With a leaf. Was that snacking? Was that beetle observing Evan as he observed it? Was it maybe napping? He wasn't even sure where to look for it's eyes to confirm if it was even awake. But he wrote it down anyways, jotting a quick Beetle - leaf observation. And he would have written more but...

His attention was otherwise drawn by a swarm of WASPS around him now. Which despite the fact he was usually fairly calm and collected, this did earn a small "ahhhh!" from him. Because calm or not, he wasn't particularly keen on being stung.

Had he or the beetle disturbed them? This was probably them saying Get off my lawn.

The more she stared at the moth, the more colours she seemed to notice. Along with dark brown there was a hint of red. Not blood red but brick red, maybe. Claudine moved a bit closer to the tree but not too close so as to startle the little winged creature. It just seemed to be resting there on the leaf. Was it eating? Was it possible that she could go even closer without causing disturbance?

Claudine decided to press her luck and had only taken two steps forward when there was a loud mention of murder hornets. The girl froze for a second but then spun around looking for hornets. What she saw was a Vampyr Mosp which she recognised quickly. Oh no.

Claudine knew that Mosps cared not whom they attacked. She instinctively reached for her wand should a Mosp get too close.

Bella went around at a slow pace, letting the insects come to her. It was hard not to freak out when some bees flittered by a little too close to her head or some beetles. She kept calm though until a horde of waps came swarming out of nowhere right towards her face. Immediatly she threw her hand's up to protect her face as she the wasps started to circle around her head. Bella tried to jump and duck to get away from the wasps, but to no avail.

The wasps kept buzzing around her head, and one or two even stung her hands, so it hurt. "Ouch!" Panicking Bella called out "Can somebody help me with these wasps?" The frogs hanging by the lake might have interested the snakette if she hadn't been preoccupied with the wasps.

The little cricket continued leaping through the grass. Lia very carefully making note of where it was going and following it slowly, taking special care of where she stepped so as not to accidentally step on any other bugs. She followed it through the grass, onto someone else's yoga mat, than near the edge of the lake. This is where it seemed to stop now. Perhaps it was finally tired from all of that hopping and now it was going to rest?

Or not. Lia heard a very distinct chirping that was clearly coming from her new little friend and she smiled. "Well, hello there. I'm Lia and I'm just going to be right here listening so you continue to do your thing and don't mind me," she hummed quietly, at least until her happy little bubble was broken by someone's shouts of 'Murder Hornets'.

Immediately the Ravenclaw was on high alert. Lia remained frozen right where she was, close to the lake. Bright blue eyes scanning the surrounding area for the source of danger and what she saw was a whole lot of bugs including, several bees, hornets which she didn't want to be stung by and.. were those.. ohh, no no no, no no.. those things could stay right over there where they were please and thank you..

Vampyr Mosp.

Yes, she saw them. And yes, she didn't want them coming anywhere near her.

Violet had been quietly watching her bee, which had paused at the edge of some shrubberies and was now in the process of doing what looked like some sort of odd dance in the air. She could sense other students walking behind her near the flowers and suddenly was startled to find a number of bees swarming around in the air, coming toward her. She covered her face with her arms and tried to hold still, hoping they would pass by her if she didn't bother them.

Meda was really enjoying this lesson, it was a quiet relaxing lesson and she hoped the students were enjoying it as well. What a lovely time it was to just follow the insects and be one with nature, that was until the nature started to come at the children. "oh me, no, there aren't any murder hornets here. Just a few little wasps. No worries, just stop moving and they will find their way back to the nest." She hadn't brought any wasps so she was hoping they would be on their way.

With her wand in hand she thought maybe it would be just better if she took care of the wasps so students wouldn't be so frightened. With a little wand movement the wasps had vanished off to somewhere else. For now she would leave the rest of the insects fluttering around, they were all behaving at the moment.

"Alright students lets gather back to our mats and tell me what did you observe and what do you think it might mean?" She loved to hear guesses before they found out the truth, it was always so much fun to predict things.

He could hear someone else ask for assistance with wasps, but he was currently indisposed as well and unable to do so. Thankfully, no stings for him though - by some slight miracle. And then Professor Euka, well he assumed anyways, had done something to make them carry on their way so he was MORE than happy to scurry back to his mat and away from them before the insect invasion became the insects invaded.

Finding his mat, Evan folded himself into a seated position - pulling his notebook back towards him to also mark down his assumption on what had happened with the wasps. Which then at the question, he raised his hand to answer on. He really didn't know what the beetle eating a leaf had to do with anything, but the others seemed easy enough. "I think we were all so busy watching the insects we had zoned in on, that we didn't notice causing any offense to the others. So the couple of swarms was really just the bees and wasps being defensive, not malicious."

Murder hornets? Bella's eyes widened with fright as she looked around her, worried to be stung by something nastier than wasps if Rurari's call out held any truth. She heaved a big sigh of relief when Professor Euka ressured everyone that there we're only wasps here, no hornets. Bella relaxed slightly, despite the throbbing pain in her hands when Professor Euka made the waps go back to their nests.

Walking back to sit down on her yoga mat Bella asked with a look up at Professor Euka. "Can you give me something against these throbbing wasp bites?" Showing her hands that we're getting more swollen around the bites by each passing minute. She could try a healing spell, but she didn't want to risk doing it wrong. Raising her hand to answer the question she said "I had ants walking up my legs as one example. They might have done that because I was sitting in the middle of ant path to their stack? I don't think they climbed my legs to be evil, they probably just wondered if I was something/or had something they could bring to increase the height of their stack or eat." Bella didn't say anything about the centipede's or wasps or beetle.

So she happily went back to the mats and plopped down on the pink one she had been sitting on. Her eyes widened again as the Professor said they weren’t murder hornets. “Murder hornets exist?!? Where are they from?” She needed to know WHERE so she could AVOID them LIKE THE PLAGUE!

I followed a bumblebee. It was very relaxing to see him or her floating through the air,” she smiled dreamily. “It made me feel sleepy and zen.

So...not dismissed.

Though Atlas was presently distracted by whatever it was that was causing this awful itch (spoiler alert, it was ants) on his back. When Ruari came over and asked if he was DANCING, he couldn't quite decide if he was amused or insulted. "No, I'm not dancing," he retorted with a bit of a huff before coming to the logical conclusion that he ought to just take off his shirt so Lucky's little brother could inspect his back. So he did and it took awhile since there were all these buttons and a tie to deal with. Hugging his shirt to his chest, Atlas attempted to turn his head around enough to see over his broadening shoulders...but no dice. "Do you see anything?"

All chaos about wasps and Vampyr Mosp aside (and he did not have time to point out that those hornets the little Claw spoke of were not native to this region and were unlikely to have made their way over and survived considering the more hostile magical insects at Hogwarts), Atlas had absolutely no idea what was going on at the moment and clearly he had missed instruction on how to interpret...uh...whatever it was they were meant to be interpreting today.

So...uh...back down on his yoga mat it was. He figured offering the response of 'I observed the inside of my eyelids' would not be an appreciated response, thus leaving the Gryffindor quite while he started slipping his shirt back on and dealing with the buttons - his tie was around his head for safe keeping as a headband.

Fortunately, the swarm of bees around her head flew off just as quickly as they had come. In fact, they seemed to have followed the bee Violet had been watching, which had now flown off toward some herbs growing beyond the shrubberies.

Relieved to hear the teacher calling them back, though, Violet headed back to her mat. "I followed and watched a bumblebee," she said when it was her turn. "It seemed to be almost doing a strange kind of dance over there in the shrubberies. Then a swarm of bees flew over from somewhere behind me and wound up following it off. So I'm thinking, that dance was meant as a message for the other bees, not for me." Which was fine with Violet--she preferred a rational explanation for things.

Just a few little wasps?

Claudine stared at Euka suspiciously. Was she trying to hurt them using certain insects? Given all that at Hogwarts over the years, anything was possible. Her gaze moved back to the Mosp but it had gone off in another direction. She breathed a sigh of relief as she headed back to her mat. Once seated, the girl looked around for her ladybug friend but it seemed to have gone its own way.

Her thoughts shifted back to the moth she’d seen on a leaf. Closer inspection had told her it had not been eating said leaf. Up went a hand. “I saw a moth resting on a leaf. I mean… he didn’t seem to be eating it, just casually hanging out there. It might mean relaxing days are ahead?’’ The Snakette didn't see how though, since NEWTs were around the corner for her.

SUMMER FOREVER

WASPS. O___O

Valentina just wanted this lesson to be over already. She was tired and sleepy ( also, super hungry ), observing insects didn't make her feel any better. She internally groaned when they had to answer, still looking around to make sure there wasn't any insect around her.

"I was observing a beetle. He - or she - seemed to just crawl about randomly before settling on a rock. I got bored so I turned to look a butterfly instead."

1/2 of Roston ~ Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Pirate Princess ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

Heath was so absorbed in watching the little stick insect eat that it took him a moment to register the buzzing in his ears, He looked up to see a swarm of wasps a little ways away from him and froze in place. Maybe if he kept still, they’d leave him alone. Don’t bother them, and they won’t bother you, right? Or so he hoped! Before he had to worry about it, Professor Euka had sent the wasps somewhere else and called the class back to the mats.

Reluctantly tearing his gaze away from the stick insect, which had now stopped eating and climbed to perch on a higher leaf, he returned to the dark blue mat. As he heard the next question, his thoughts once again turned to the hungry stick insect. What could an eating insect possibly mean? His hand went up, and he said, "I followed a stick insect and saw it eating a leaf. Maybe that's a good omen, like a sign of something fulfilling to come?" He didn't know, but that was the best guess he had!

" That is fine to zone out and concentrate on one insect. I'm glad you were super focused."

"Oh my goodness, yes, yes, go ahead and head to the hospital wing to get that. You can be excused." How had she missed someone being stung.

This was a fun answer and Meda smiled, "It can be very relaxing to watch insects move around."

She was still eyeing him and hoping he would catch up soon.

"A dance is very interesting observations. Maybe that is some sort of sign for something." She pondered as she moved to the next person.

"That is a great observation and a good prediction." She liked how she was thinking.

"I was observing a beetle. He - or she - seemed to just crawl about randomly before settling on a rock. I got bored so I turned to look a butterfly instead."
"Very intersting that you were observing one and something caught your eye to change. Remember that thought as we move on."

"That could be, very good thoughts.

"These were all great observations. These insects are some of my friends that have been with me or at least their family has been with me for some time. My late husband was very big on researching and protecting all living creatures so we have what you could call a sanctuary for many creatures including insects. So I thought I'd bring some with me to help us out today." She would carefully gather them back up once the lesson is over. Now I hope you have had fun observing them, of course a true reading would mean finding them in the wild or them specifically coming to you so these readings will be a little altered since we have had to bring the bugs to us." She always liked when things were more natural, but at times she had to be creative.

"Now I want you to come up and get this paper. Look over the observations and do a reading based on what your bug was doing or what you observed from the activity today." Starting to pass them out she noticed a few lady bugs coming down toward the brightly colored mats and walking around.

SPOILER!!: bugs behavior

Entomancy is divination through insects. Below is a short list of interpretations.
Ant

To be bitten by an Ant warns of quarrels. If ants make their nest near to your home's threshold, prosperity is promised.
A Central African tribe uses ants for yes/no divination. Two long leaves are inserted into an ant hill. If the ants eat the left leaf first, the answer is yes, and if on the right is eaten first, the answer is no.

Bee

If a Bee flies into a house, it brings good luck to the residents, but killing a bee will bring bad luck. In some areas, fishermen believe that a a bee flying in the same direction as the boat will help bring them a good catch. According to the Romans however, a flight of bees is an ill omen. It is said that in 48 BC, the defeat of the army of Pompeii at Pharsalus was foretold when a swarm of bees settled on the sacred altar. The humming of bees foretells good news, but if their humming sounds angry, trouble is coming.
Beetles

Among the ancient Egyptians, the scarab and other Beetles have acquired a fortunate significance. If a beetle runs across your path while out on a country walk, it signifies good luck. The bigger the beetle, the better your good fortune.
In Polynesia, a murder may be solved by allowing a beetle to crawl over the grave of the victim. The tracks made by the insect will reveal the murderer's identity, possibly even the name.

Cockaroach

It is no surprise that the Cockaroach is regarded universally with repulsion. If it appears where it is not generally seen, it foretells of death.
Cricket

The Cricket is regarded as lucky in all parts of the world. They foretell peace, prosperity, and domestic contentment. If crickets mysteriously abandon a house which they have inhabited for a long time, illness or death will follow.
Grosshopper

The Grosshopper foretells good news and travel.

Ladybug

The Ladybug has been viewed as a bearer of good news since the Middle Ages. One bearing seven spots on its back is considered especially lucky.
In Britain, a young woman could tell which direction her lover would arrive from if she cupped a ladybug (with spotted wings) in her hand then watched where it flew off to when released.

Spider

Killing a Spider, especially at night, is very unfortunate. A spider in the evening foretells of money loss, while one in the morning is a warning of grief. If you see one at noon, it tells of trouble and anxiety. If you find one spinning a web, it means that a plot is being formed against you. Finding one upon your clothes or person is an omen of prosperity however. Tiny spiders bring easy money, while large spiders also bring money -if you're willing to work for it.

Wasp

If you are stung by a wasp, it is a warning to be on your guard against jealousy and deception. The hum of wasps augur an unwelcome and unexpected guest or slander.

Butterfly

If you come across a butterfly and it is on a flower it means luck ahead and possibly money in the future.

Violet had been hoping the teacher would explain what the bee had actually been doing, but all she said was 'it might be a sign of something.' Everything in divination might be a sign of something, usually, that was the trouble with it; why couldn't things have a clear cause and effect, like in potions? Violet sighed and went to get one of the papers, then walked back to her mat reading it (and nearly stepping on a few of her fellow students in the process).

Bees--there was nothing here about dancing bees at all! Hmm..."a flight of bees is an ill omen....The humming of bees foretells good news, but if their humming sounds angry, trouble is coming." Well, if a flight of bees suddenly swarms around you head, that is definitely an ill omen, and one that doesn't need explaining! And their humming did sound angry, which means trouble is coming. Violet felt that the main trouble was that someone kicked up a swarm of bees behind her and she got caught in the crossfire. Then the bees swarmed off again after the dancing bee--Violet didn't believe that was a sign of anything, at least not for her. She thought the bee's dance was some sort of communication to the other bees, and that they had gotten the message and gone off after it. At least that made sense--more sense than divination did.

Violet wrote these observations down (minus the unflattering comments about divination, of course).

Oh. It turned out her response wasn’t such a bad one. That was twice in one lesson, and since this lesson was Divination {a lesson which was not necessarily her strongest}, Claudine would take the wins. She eyed Euka with renewed interest, and a hint of admiration. It was awfully nice of the woman to care for the insects like that.

The seventh year made her way to Euka to collect the paper. Even before she was back to her mat she was reading through the predictions. A quick scan told her that there was no prediction for the moth. Professor, what if the insect I saw is not on this? It was a moth… should it be classified under the butterfly category?” Or was there an actual prediction for moths not printed on the paper?

Lisa was starting to feel sleepy. Calm buzzing of the bee, comfy yoga mat, lack of sleep, and nice breeze was the perfect combinations for the young Ravenclaw to almost slump forward. That was until she had to get up to grab the piece of paper. She got up, went to fetch it, and returned to sit cross cross apple sauce once more on her map. Right…..

Let’s look at bees….. Her eyebrows raised at one particular sentence of the text that seemed to apply.

The humming of bees foretells good news, but if their humming sounds angry, trouble is coming.

The bee I saw was bumbling and humming along so that means good news! Maybe things will all work out and I shouldn’t be worried about things?” Maybe HE had feelings for her too??

SUMMER FOREVER

.... Oh, they weren't done yet? Valentina yawned as she got up to get the paper, unable to keep her eyes open. She was so sleepy. All she wanted to lay down on the mats, close her eyes...but ugh, no. She sat down, reading the observations. OOH. If a beetle runs across your path while out on a country walk, it signifies good luck. Wait, it HAD run across her path sooo GOOD LUCK?? But she had seen a butterfly too so what did that mean? If you come across a butterfly and it is on a flower it means luck ahead and possibly money in the future. The butterfly had not been sitting on a flower sooooo.. well, that's disappointing. She set the paper down on the mat and started to scribble them down.

Upon instruction, Evan collected a piece of paper for himself and re-situated himself to be more comfortable on his mat, scanning over the contents. Who knew there was so much that could be gathered just from observing some bugs? Technically as he'd observed two different insects, he looked at the meaning for the wasps and the beetle.

The wasps... was certainly interesting, because either meaning he could see how it could apply. He was doing his best to not be jealous about certain things - but there were times it still came unbidden. But also... unwelcome guests? Well, that had already come to fruition for him had it not? The Board of Governors was certainly not something he'd considered welcomed. He was pretty over their meddling, even if he was doing his best to try not to show it.

And then the Beetle... good fortune, huh? He raised his hand. "I saw wasps and a beetle. So my interpretation," he guessed, "would be that there are unwelcomed presences in my life, but perhaps the beetle means I'll have the good fortune of them... not being soon?" With divination it really was all a guessing game for him. He usually just tried to find some of the things they touched on and then research into the muggle psychology of it, merely because it was of great interest to him.
