Default Divination Lesson

The divination tower might be a long walk for most and climbing the ladder can be somewhat problematic, but once you are there you will see that the classroom is set up and ready to go.

Divination is typically a place that involves open minds and Euka hopes you brought that today. The room is set up with circle tables all around the room and four chairs to each table. In the center of the tables sits a candle burning bright. The room is lit mostly by these candles, but there are some burning on the walls to bring more light, especially near the board so that students can see easily. Euka is at her desk waiting to greet students as the come in and a message on the board that states not to touch the candles and please find a seat.

The Divination classroom was a long, long way from the dungeons, so Violet set of trudging up the staircases early toward one of her least favorite classes. Technically, since she would not be taking a N.E.W.T. in it, she didn't really have to come, but she just couldn't bear the thought that this time they just might learn some useful bit of information that she needed to know, and so here she was anyway.

"Good morning, Professor Euka," she said with as much enthusiasm as she could muster, then plopped herself and her bag down at a table, where her attention was immediately mesmerized by the candle flame in the center.

It was a long walk for Aria, all right. But she didn’t mind. She never did. Up the ladder she went and emerged through the trap door where she paused for a bit as she quickly surveyed the setting for the lesson. Tables with four chairs each, a candle at each table and around the rest of the room and the professor. Nothing out of the ordinary unless you count the lack of soothing music.

“Hello, professor! It’s lovely to see your pretty face today!” The Slytherin offered Euka a bright smile then turned to find herself a seat. Her attention almost immediately went to Violet, and Aria briefly debated whether she should sit with the girl or not. Eventually deciding that she would, she trudged over to Violet’s table. “The flame really can’t be THAT interesting,’’ the fifth year said by way of greeting. She flopped down on a random chair.

Candles at the centre of the tables? Did it remind her of a certain romantic scene from a book that she was currently in the midst of devouring? Yes. Was Lisa currently imagining herself as the young heroine of the tale? Absolutely. All she needed was to trade her school robes and change into a beautiful lilac day dress paired with white gloves. Walking further into the room, the greetings to Professor Euka brought her back to reality.

Hi Professor Euka. How are you?” she asked with a grin before heading towards one of the tables where Violet and Aria were seated. “Romantic candlelight meal for three?” she joked, wiggling her eyebrows a little sillily at the older girls.

Edric wandered into Divination, gave a small nod to the professor, and then immediately put his head down on a stack of books. He was here, on time/early. And he was tired. He was already so tired of school. His poor brain was exhausted by it all.

"Hmmm??" Violet replied, looking up from the candle at her fellow Slytherin. "Oh, uh, no, I was just...you know, looking into space. Waiting for class to begin." Because Violet P. Blackthorne was not interested in Divination and was certainly NOT about to go into some kind of trance or something...

Caes didn't expect to find himself heading up the towers for another lesson in Divination. He didn't have much luck in the subject at his previous school, what good would it be here? Well, he was told that he was having too much fun in the halls and sure enough he was expected to be here.

"Professor.. hello," He nodded in greeting, the other words of affirmation couldn't escape his lips resulting in his half-attempt of a greeting. Where could he sit now?

Caes' face contorted in a way where a smile was about to show but it didn't. Perhaps he was tired from the heat? Looking at his sis (Aria) and the older pretty Snake (Violet) talking with (Lisa). It was amusing. Shame they couldn't have 3 per table. If they glanced his way they'd see him giving a two finger salute.

So instead, he dropped his bag next to the nearest table occupied by a sleeping Snake (Edric) before sitting down and slouching in the chair. He wanted to put his feet up, but the table wasn't large enough for his legs and he didn't feel like kicking a kid in the attempt today.

Milo was quiet as he ascended the latter and entered through the trapdoor, quiet as he settled in at the first entirely empty table he came to, quiet as he stretched out his feet to rest on the chair next to his own - at least until such a time as someone acceptable claimed it. He maintained his silence even once he was situated - as he always did upon arrival to a lesson - apparently deep in thought.

Serious and solemn as his expression was, it might have seemed mysterious, like perhaps Milo was pondering the mysteries of the known and/or unknown universe (a recurrent area of interest), or maybe as though some kind of deep personal rumination was underway. In actuality, he was trying to figure out if all the wands in the school, stood end to end, would reach from the lake's deepest point to its surface. Simple enough to estimate, but for the fact that Milo was not all that good with numbers. Not naturally, anyway, which made this one of those questions which kept him quiet and occupied (and therefore out of trouble) for a while.

Divination, however, was another matter. That was something he had covered even when most of Milo's attention was, say, many fathoms deep in the lake with a trunk of wands in tow, or wondering how feasible it might be to engineer the experiment in the physical realm.

SUMMER FOREVER

"Hello, professor."

Matilda paused for a moment after entering through the trapdoor, noticing the candles immediately. What an interesting setup.. but she did quite like the ambience but wasn't sure if she was going to feel the same way about the lesson. She quietly walked over to the nearest table and sat down, running a hand though her red hair a little nervously.

Apollo's only wish for divination was that it was in the same tower as the Gryffindor Common Room. LIKE, why did Hogwarts have to have soooo many different towers because it meant that he had to go downstairs to go back up??? HOW did that even make sense????

At least divination was always set up in such a cozy manner, though he did find himself blushing at Lisa Nam's comment about romantic candlelit dinner. What did she know about that anyway?

"Hi Professor Euka, my birthday is actually in April," He offered, as a gateway to a different comment from Lisa's. Also, candles = for birthday wishes. Because he didn't particularly want to talk about romantic-anythings with Maya's sister, even if she was only a year younger. Did he sit down at Lisa's table regardless of her interest in romantic dinners? Yes, absolutely. Was he also secretly hoping it was a different Nam seated there? This too.

Christian poked his head through the door. Trying to determine if he should run or not. Candles? Well well…. this should be an interesting lesson. It was really easy for him to climb the ladder, a few steps up and he was already poking his head in the door. It wasn’t too late to turn back now was it?

Nah. Of course he wasn’t going to leave now. The seventh year had always been drawn to the divination arts. (It was mostly because it was a guaranteed good or at least decent grade) also it was a fairly easy class too. Walking the rest of the way up the ladder he entered the candle lit room. “Good day, Professor.” As he coolly headed over to an empty table. You know so whoever wanted sit with him could…

"Good Day Christian, I hope you are doing well." She gave the boy a smile and even if not trying watched which seat he picked knowing her niece always spoke so highly of him and many times he was part of her topics.

Looking at the time she decided they should get started and if anyone joined late they could jump in. "Again good morning class, if you are a new student I am Professor Euka and this is Divination." She moved her arms around as into show them the room. "It may look different at each lesson, but we will be learning many different forms of divination this school year. Divination is a wonderful love of many different things and I hope you come to each of my classes with an open mind so that you can see how amazing this art truly is."

If nothing else she was passionate about this subject, she had a family line of diviners, seers, and it showed through her love. "I must remind you to not touch the candles that are burning on the tables, we will be working with them, but a bit later. The first thing I would like to discuss is just candles. What is the purpose of them, how have you seen them used in any setting, but specifically divination if you have seen them used before. What purpose does a candle hold?"

Was Violet daydreaming of Caes? Great Merlin! Aria HOPED NOT. “Um… look away into space then?” Unlike her Housemate, Aria was not enthralled by the candles but she did admire the flickering shadows the flames made on various objects across the room. These shadows were what held her attention when Lisa joined the present party of two. Aria wrinkled her nose. “Ew to most romantic stuff.” In fact, gaaag. She did, however, wiggle her brows back. “It’s more like a party for three!” Hearing that allllll too familiar voice that was Caes’, Aria looked around to see him taking a seat at a nearby table. She wiggled her fingers at him, a reply to his salute.

The fifth year rested her elbows on the table then leaned her delicate chin on her linked fingers. The possibilities were so endless with what they could do with these candles. Also, was it possible for her to snag one just for the fun of it at some point during the lesson? Hmmm.

While Aria had not seen much candle work in Divination, she vaguely recalled that there was a process involving molten candle wax and cold water. The exact process and name of that Divination form were what she could not recall no matter how hard she tried. Up went an enthusiastic hand. “Wellll, they can be used to create a perfectly eerie but soothing environment when one does a reading.”

Cass was here all along, having chosen to conveniently sit in a place that she hoped didn't draw too much attention. That was hard, considering the circular setup of the tables but she just wasn't a hundred percent here today. She stared into the flame of the candle in front of her, in hopes of not fully dozing off.

She'd only shifted her gaze to the professor once class was announced to start and the first question was raised. Cass always figured it was best to participate early in the lesson when the questions were easy and didn't require much brain. And the Gryffindor was right. There was her opportunity, and she raised her hand casually. "The scented ones make rooms smell nice." Or horrible. Depending on how ridiculous one's sense of smell was. But that was her contribution to today's class, thanks.

Violet had sat up straight by now, shaking herself awake inwardly, anxious that Aria and Lisa not think her odd. As she looked she noticed Caes standing in the front of the room, lowering his arm. Had he been waving? Violet kind of hoped he would join their table (hey, there are FOUR seats!), but was disappointed to see him sit down at another with Edric, a younger Slytherin. Oh well, class goes on.

Raising her hand, she commented, "I had a great-aunt who used to use candles for scrying--she claimed that the smoke would part like a pair of theatre curtains and then she would see things in the middle." Of course the same great-aunt used to claim that the ghost of Albus Dumbledore would come to her on Halloween and share knitting patterns with her, so Violet had never put much stock in anything she said.

Dot had been there the entire time. She just hadn’t been all that chatty save for when she had greeted Professor Euka. The first year tilted her head when she greeted everyone and commented that divinations looked different for each lesson. Well, that was a relief it would be a shame if they learned the same thing day in and day out like robotic little mice in a maze now wouldn’t it? Still, as she pondered mice for a moment her mind went to the mechanical bugs her classmate had made.

They were so cool.

Her blonde frowned to herself when they were asked not to touch the candles. Did that also include her hair – because she was tempted to drop a little touch of cat hair onto the candle to see what happened. Hair burning had to be a divination form right?

Still she slumped a little in her seat out of boredom and tucked her chin against her shoulder before raising her hand. Merlin she didn’t want to wait around to be called on. She just wanted to yell out her ideas like she had at the feast. ”burning things ... i mean, i’m sure you could watch how things burn using candles? Like ... like hairs or fabric ... starting little tiny fires to make readings” seeee she had ideas. She wasn’t totally out of it.

Caes didn't know how long (Edric) would be sleeping on the table. It gave him a chance to glance over at the table with Aria, Lisa, and Violet. Violet got a sly wink from him before turning his head to Professor Euka who addressed the class now.

"Candles.. are also used to make the room smell nice and remove any odors." As for divination purpose, he had no clue. "Guess it depends on the size and shape of the candle. If it's the big thick round ones, maybe how they're burned away could form a shape that can be read a certain way." Yeah, he was spitballing here.

Vera had been uncharaceristically quiet as she had entered the classroom and found a seat with Dot. The reason for the silence was primarily she'd been entranced by the flame. Flame was SO pretty, wasn't it? It just made you want to touch it because who didn't want to touch pretty things!? She was resisting the urge to do just that, when the PRofessor's reminder to not rang clear.

Phooey.

So what could someone do with candles? People were already saying scent, which was one of the first ideas to pop into her mind. When Scoot had been little and had a particularly stinky nappy, she used to beeeeeeg Papa to light a candle. Or use air freshener or SOMETHING. Burning stuff, like Dot said, also sounded like a lot of fun and Vera found herself straightening in her chair to look over towards Euka. Could they burn stuff please Professor? That sounded like a LOT of fun. But before they did that... use for candles... Vera raised her hand and waited to be called on. "If you combine two long candles by the wick, they can make excellent numb chucks!" She did a couple of hand gestures to emphasize her point, before beaming.

Could they do that too with any leftovers?

For better or worse...Atlas was here. Here and with his arms folded atop the circular table with his chin resting on the back of his left hand (left over right, always). He hadn't entirely been paying attention to who else he was sharing a table with when he had flopped into it, instead his gaze focused on the little dancing flame and the break down the hydrocarbons into molecules of hydrogen and carbon and their vaporization. He really liked candles, you see, and playing with hot wax had been a pastime for as long as he could remember. The best part of candles was dipping your finger into the melted wax and building up the layers...which unfortunately meant that the professor's double warning translated as a challenge to the Gryffindor.

A challenge he gladly accepted.

So, with his wand out and leaned against the table mostly out of view, his bright blue eyes glanced up as Professor Euka began the class and her attention turned to those answering the question. Which was not to say that Atlas did not have an opinion, he almost always did, on candles or their context within Divination...he just had more pressing itches to scratch for now. So, with a softly muttered Levitation Charm, the fifth year focused on the candle nearest him and eeeeeeeeeeeeeeever so slightly guided it to lean...and lean just enough to tip wax off the top and he reached out with his other hand to catch it on his palm.

Technically speaking...he was NOT touching the candles.

Little pool of wax accumulated in his hand and quickly hardening, Atlas continued to hold his breath and guided the candle back into place.

Uh...perhaps looking a little incriminating, he should probably...er...offer something. And he did have a something, thank you very much. "Candle flames are useful for the sterilization of metallic objects. Also softening certain kinds of pieces to make them a little more malleable or flexible... stronger too." There was a whole bunch of jargon he could throw out there right now annealing, forging, quenching...so on and so on...but a simple candle wouldn't really be applicable to most of those and he could say with confidence that they would be doing nothing of the sort today in class.

Edric would have liked to sleep for a long time, thanks but no thanks to the elder Slytherin (Caes) there. He groaned and popped open an eyeball because honestly, who COULD SLEEP with everyone TALKING right NEXT TO HIM.

"Candles?" Candles? Candles. Apparently he was answering the question now. "Candles are used for light, duhhhh. Like all the ones floating around the Great Hall."

Honestly, the teachers at this school, bruh.

So far so good with settling in, ma’am,” she said with a wide grin. Nothing too too dramatic and occurred so she considered things were.. well decent.

Turning back to her table mates, she crinkled her nose and giggled at Aria’s response. “Fair enough.” She shrugged her shoulders in response before noticing that an older boy (Caes) was looking over at the table. Oooooh…. who was he looking at?!? Violet? Aria?

Lisa brought her attention to the candle and ignored a few of the answers as she focused in on the candle in front of her. A memory of… stranger times flitted in her mind as she had flashbacks of the play her first year at Hogwarts. Healer Poppy. The bread. The candles. She didn’t even notice her heartbeat and breath increasing as she remembered more and more.

And then calmness.

When she got to Serena stepping in. That party of her memory always calmed her.

Lisa kept her head down, hiding her face but shot her hand up into the air with the other hand over her heart, feeling it’s pulse. “While the scent of candles can be pleasant, I’ve seen them entrance others.. and have… experienced it…They can carry potions… It can be like the candles that… erm… Healer Poppy and the house elves replace… the ones that made you sleepy.

She shivered before folding her arms across her chest.

Violet started and jerked her head over toward Lisa. Healer Poppy and her candles!! Why hadn't Violet remembered that?!! That term had been a horrible haze of headaches and brain fog, the latter of which had lasted well into the next term. And here she'd been, staring at this candle like she was in a trance! Had her experience with Poppy's potions made her susceptible to such things?! How horrid!! Violet turned back, determined to resist at all costs the temptation to stare into that candle again.

Karleigh had to admit that the ambiance in the room from all the lit candles was pretty cool. Sure, they often used candles for lighting, but there was something about having so many in the room and the way that the flames flickered that created a really interesting mood. She stared at the flickering flame at her table a moment, soon snapping out of her thoughts as Professor Euka spoke.

Questions about candles. Karleigh had seen them used in Divination as well as just in general, had used them herself even, but she listened to the other answers before offering her own. "I think they are use a lot in Divination and in certain rituals even. But you can read how the flame dances or how the wax drips for divining purposes. You can use the smoke too and burn paper." Lots of different uses and she wondered if they'd be using candles in their divining practice today.

"We do use candles to set a tone whether it be eerie, peaceful, or romantic." As she heard someone say earlier.

"That is very true, I rather enjoy the lilac ones. They remind me of a spring day."

"Your great aunt seems like a knowledgeable diviner. You can use the candle to read by looking at it's smoke." They wouldn't be doing that today, but it is something they could do.

"Yes, you can use candles in many ways during divination, but you have hit the exact one we are using today when you mentioned the wax."

"As Karleigh mentioned, there are so many ways to use candles, the smoke, the flame, how things burn, but that when she mentioned the wax she hit exactly what we are going to use today for our readings. The form is Ceromancy and it is the reading of wax. We will each be getting a candle to use of our own very soon. What I have up here on the table you will need for the readings later on. I have a candle that you will use, but please do not light the candle until I say, you will have a bowl, and you will need your wand. Now you are all teenagers or very close to being teenagers. I should not have to remind and repeat on being careful with candles. If you follow directions nothing will happen. If you get wax on you it doesn't typically hurt, just feel warm, but cools quickly. Some even use it to soften their skin." So there shouldn't be any dramatics that are unnecessary she hoped.

"While you are coming up to gather your materials, can anyone tell me if you have used candles in any divination lessons or even in general lessons at all?"

Violet paused halfway up to gather supplies. Had they used candles before? She couldn't remember, but in six-going on-seven years at Hogwarts, surely they had...somewhere. "Uh, yes, didn't we use it before in...that Divination class the other year?" Violet was guessing, but hoped Professor Euka might fill in the blanks for her.
