Noltie's Botanical Novelties is a peculiar little shop which looks as though humanity has abandoned it entirely and nature is trying its best to take over. While the storefront is similar in appearance to the stores on either side, tendrils of plants have broken through and weaved in and out of the brickwork and there are strange and beautiful flowers seemingly growing right out of the mortar.
Inside the store its generally humid like a greenhouse and it smells fresh and loamy - definitely heaven for anyone with the proverbial green thumb. The plants are organised by their geographic origins, and as you approach certain areas you might notice temperature changes and weather charms expertly in place to best serve the plants in question.
Noltie's prides itself on acquiring and stocking only the best magical and mundane herbology supplies. Even those plants which are not on the permanent inventory can be acquired on request, so too can almost any non-magical plant, for a price. Nothing illegal is stocked here. Noltie's will not sell dangerous plants to minors, or anything that requires a license without the appropriate paperwork, everything in this store is above board, though we have heard there is a shop in Knockturn Alley that takes care of that sort of thing...

Her words were something that he heard all too often and this vague notion of 'someday' always amused him. Nothing more than fancy without any real intention, though his opinions were kept to himself. "What's stopping you from doing it now?" he inquired, moving the potted plant from being tucked under one arm to the other. Which encouraged it to sing out rather loudly with delight. "No darts?"
And they could get into a debate on logomachies later. She was hardly talking his ear off, as she put it.
That was the beauty and tragedy of the world, wasn't it? So much to see and experience but not enough time and freedom to do so. She wished she could just leave the expectations behind sometimes, but she couldn't. Her family needed her.
The brunette laughed and shook her head, offering a small smile. "I wish darts were the only thing stopping me." Merlin did she wish that was all. "Money has more to do with it." She'd been supporting herself and sending money to her parents, more so now that her dad was battling an illness. It was hard to put anything aside for fun.
"Tell me, if you had to recommend one place to go, which would it be? You know, in case I ever do get out of London."

This part of town during this time of the day felt crowded. He was more reluctant to do his chores at around this hour but he had no choice. It was urgent. He needed to pick up a few things so that he can complete most of his chores right away..... well that until he passed by the botanical store, Jonathan found the place rather comforting. Familiar, rather. He visits this place once or twice back years ago but then stopped. Today, is a good day to visit it. It wouldn't hurt right?
Of course not. So without any hesitation he made his way inside. He walked towards a couple of plants as if he is planning to buy anything. Coming here was not part of his itinerary but it was something he surely missed. He let out a soft sight and touched the leaf ever so lightly.

Hmm...
Perhaps he should make a purchase.
Still looking for a new home a few of the Bowtruckles moved into a place that didn't seem to have many humans, but had plenty of plants and a feeling of safety for the little creatures. As the two made their way in they saw a human and hurried to hide into the plants.

Browsing through the plants made Jonathan think of potions. He eyed Shrivelfig in one of the shelves and went in closer to inspect it. Hmmm..... OR it could be his imagination too.
Could be. He best carry on then.
Moving as quietly as possible one of the little bowtruckles had found a plant that he wanted to get close to, but the plant was closer to the human. He felt he could keep himself hidden as he moved about the shelf, his little feet silently gliding forward as he reached the leaf of the plant he was walking towards.

After spending an entire week with his kiddos, Gus had dropped them back off to their mother for a few days. She had a family event and the kids needed to be there and honestly... Gus was over arguing with the woman about changing his plans. The agreement had been for him to have them for all but one week of summer and she'd already broken that three times. What she'd also done was shoot down his idea of formally adopting the older two children that he'd been bringing up as his own and giving them his surname.
But it didn't show on his face how much his heart hurt about it all. In fact, he had gotten up and left the house for the whole day to keep himself busy.
FIRST he was going to get some resources to practice things on before teaching started up again in September. He'd also promised to help out some more at Stemp House this summer with Herbology for the younger residents. He wasn't sure that Lorelai knew what she was getting into with fifteen new residents moving in across the summer, but he knew if anyone could handle it... it was Mrs. Stemp.
Gus trailed the shelves with his basket and his notebook of ideas.

Delyth always found the botanical shop with the vines and tendrils weaving its way through the front of the shop brick work, giving it an almost shabby, natural look. Not that she was a particular expert however. No, far from it in reality but that didn’t bother the curly blonde. She didn’t need to know the difference between a Shrivelfig or Bubotuber, all she needed today was a nice, innocent little plant to accentuate her small apartment. Nothing more. Nothing less. Despite this, she still wanted to explore the shop, taking in the variety of plants and all of their splendid colours. It really was something to behold when they were all in bloom.
The question was though, what plant could she get that would suit the yellow theme that she had going in her small flat? It couldn’t be too big or too small and the colours had to contrast well with yellow. With a small sigh, she closed her eyes and pinched the bridge of her nose. Not because of the plants. It was her work at the ministry. With another year of Hogwarts students coming soon, applications were coming thick and fast at the ministry with more and more parents seeking support for their children. This led to many late nights and early morning and it was only the start of the summer.
With a small sigh, she opened her eyes again, finally deciding to ask for a little help. Walking around with no staff members in sight, she decided, albeit reluctantly to ask a stranger who, by all accounts, looked like he could have worked there with his glasses and notebook in hand. Sidling over, she gave him a soft tap, tap, tap on the shoulder “Excuse me, I was wondering if you could help me” Pausing briefly now because she couldn’t well say she wanted a plant that looked good with yellow could she? That would make her sound stupid! Thinking quickly, she continued “Do you happen to know where the dittany is by any chance?” That sounded smart, right?

Gus was THRILLED at the selection of honking daffodils and if it were possible, his eyes would be full of hearts right now. There was something so wonderful about a normal daffodil, but a HONKER was something else. It warmed his heart, okay? The honk of it all. He almost missed the first tap on his shoulder, but picked up that it was happening after the third one. For some reason, he expected it to be a PLANT tapping him. But it wasn't! It was a HUMAN.
A human with a head of hair that reminded him of something in the greenhouses back at Hogwarts. Hm.
"Hello! Help? OH! Of course!" Gus closed up his notebook and set it into his basket. He was always happy to help out in here - he knew the layout of the shop almost as well as he knew his personal greenhouse. "It's your lucky day, love. I DO know where it is!" Did... she want him to show her?

"Catherine, just LOOK at this place," Cecelia whispered excitedly as she moved into Noltie's, taking in the significant change in atmosphere from the sunny, crowded street just outside the door. It was amazing! Something about the place felt wild and secretive and she wanted to explore. Actually, need was probably a better word for what she was feeling right now. She needed to explore this place right this instant!
"I bet they have all SORTS of cool plants in here. I bet they even have some dangerous ones. Let's have a look at THOSE!" She promised not to stick her fingers too close or anything. She JUST wanted to look.

Oh, Catherine was looking. It was the kind of place her grandmother would love. In fact, Catherine was certain the older witch had already been there multiple times. Maybe she was even one of the people who sold plants to that shop. Now, that was a fact Catherine didn't know, but she made a mental note to ask her the next time they visited.
"It's nice." The brunette said truthfully, looking around as well but not looking as eager to explore as her best friend was. The weather charms weer also noticed by her, but just about, as that was also something she was used to. She didn't think it was odd since she had grown up in such environments. Not that shop, though, obviously. In fact, it was the first time Catherine had ever been in there, hence her interest which was no match to Cecelia's, but it was still some interest.
As they walked past some plants, Catherine recognised a few that she used a lot in Potions and she wondered if it would be useful to own some of those. Using fresh ingredients would definitely make some Potions better, she was sure. Besides, she'd only need to get it once and harvest the same plant several times, perhaps even through the year and for many years in a row, depending on how she managed to keep the plant alive. Not that Herbology was exactly her main interest - far from it - but it wasn't like she was a brown thumb either.
It was then that Cecelia made the comment about dangerous plants and right on cue the Ravenclaw spotted one. "There's a Snargaluff. The Dwarf kind." She said, gesturing towards the right at a small tentacle-y bush. "My grandmother has one of those." Not particularly exciting to just sit and watch, in Catherine's opinion, but definitely dangerous, she knew that much. "They're very hard to handle, even the little ones." She knew that for a fact because she had seen it. Her grandmother had a lot of strong muscles - that was what happened to people who spent a lot of time working outdoors, she supposed - but she wasn't able to do anything to the plant on her own. "So don't touch it." She advised the Gryffindor solely for the fact she was a Gryffindor.

Cecelia giggled, moving closer to the plant Catherine had identified-no surprise there. "Snargaluff is a funny word, don't you think? Who names these plants anyway? That'd be a cool job. Professional plant namer. Sign me up." The blonde didn't have any of these plants at her own house, but she was sure she'd spotted one in the greenhouses at school. "I bet we could handle it. We're strong." She offered her best friend a grin and was JUST about to reach out towards the plant when she was warned about touching it.
OOPS!
Heh.
Pulling her hand back, she smiled sheepishly and backed away. "Okay, no touching. I promise."

OOPS!
Heh.
Pulling her hand back, she smiled sheepishly and backed away. "Okay, no touching. I promise."
Catherine had never stopped to consider that Snargaluff was a funny word. She supposed it was somewhat amusing, but it was a common word in her mind. Probably because she grew up listening to strange spells, plant and animal names, perhaps. Then again, so had Cecelia. But probably not as much plant names as Catherine, by the looks of it. "I suppose." She said unenthusiastically because, really, she didn't exactly find it funny. Professional plant namer? "You can be, but you'd need to know Latin too because they all have a Latin name as well as an English name. And they have to make sense." She gave her friend a firm nod while still looking at the plant that they were now standing closer to.
Her eyebrows shot up when Cecelia nearly touched the plant and Catherine almost sighed a sigh of relief when her best friend actually listened to her and didn't touch the Dwarf Snargaluff. Good. She was way better at heeding Catherine's advice than any of her siblings. Probably one of the main reasons they were best friends. "I bet we can't." Was her comment back. Seriously, if her grandmother couldn't handle it on her own, then for sure Catherine and Cecelia couldn't do it. She knew it for a fact. "We'll eventually study them at school anyway, so you... we might be able to handle it when we're older." Catherine hoped it was only when they were a bit older, because she wasn't particularly keen on getting seriously injured doing that any time soon. But whenever they did do it, she'd make sure to pair up with a few Gryffindors. That way they could handle it while she observed. But maybe that'd be a terrible idea because Gryffindors were more prone to make a mess and do things wrong, so maybe she wouldn't partner up with any of them when the time came. She'd have to consider her options well.
Although she didn't have to think about it now, Catherine's thoughts went immediately to all of her classmates and she started categorising them to decide whom she'd team up with for that particular task. It'd be easier to have an idea already for when they had to do it in class.
"Were you thinking of getting a plant today?" As the words left her mouth, Catherine frowned because that sounded like she was the shopkeeper and for some reason that really annoyed her. "I mean, are you going to give anyone a gift and thought they'd like a plant?" Urgh, what on Earth? There was probably a less silly way of getting Cecelia away from the dangerous plants than saying those stupid things. Then again, Catherine's brain was on high alert because they were still standing pretty close to the Snargaluff and as long as they stayed there, there was always a chance Cecelia would Gryffindor away. "I might get a..." She looked towards the more mundane, non-dangerous plants. "...belladonna." ...No, not just because it was the first one she saw it was. She approached the plant, hoping Cecelia would follow along. "Look, they have two types. See, the Latin names tell you which is which." She pointed at the labels and how one was a Atropa belladonna and another a Amaryllis belladonna. "Plant namers would need to know these things." She repeated just to make sure her friend was following along. She took a look at the plants before adding: "This is the one we use in Potions. I don't think I've seen that one before." Hmm. It looked like it was just a flower. She'd have to look it up later to see why she hadn't seen the second type before.

After all, it wasn’t everyday a flower honks in your face.
It all happened very quickly, but the second the woman got honked at, Gus burst into fits of laughter. You know, the kind of laughter that took your breath away and left tears streaming down your face? Well, that kind of laughter was a staple in the life of this Rainwater man, but this woman need not know that. All she needed to think was that she had caused such a delight in his life that he found it so funny that he was ALMOST doubled over. Hee hee hah HAH.

"It's a honking daffodil, love!" AND IT HONKED.
And so did Gus!
The shock? That went away very quickly but the embarrassment of the situation she found herself in? That would end up lingering around for the rest of the day. It was just her luck that the flowers that would look perfect in her little flat just so happened to honk at you when you got close to them!
And then there was the stranger. Sure, he initially seemed kind but now he was almost of the floor in tears of laughter. “You could have warned me, you know” she replied, unsure if she wanted to laugh at the guffawing man in front of her or cry out of embarrassment. Instead, she settled for a look of befuddlement.
Finally deciding that she’d take some of the little honking menaces, she reached past the man with the glasses, grabbing a few of the daffodils delicately. “Well, I think it’s safe to say they won’t be scaring me again any time soon”.
Leave it to Catherine to take ALL the fun out of this. Cecelia gave her a pained look as she started going on about Latin and their inability to handle a little old plant, which was discouraging to say the least. Sometimes, not ALWAYS, but sometimes she wished that her friend could turn her brain off for just a little while and simply enjoy things.
Looking around, the blonde considered Cat's question. Truthfully, she'd really just wanted to check out this shop because it looked a bit like a jungle inside and she liked the idea of that and the way her imagination could run wild in such an atmosphere. Cappi really liked plants, though, and Cecelia was now realizing it could be REALLY nice to surprise him with something she'd picked out for him. "If you were picking a plant for a friend, what kind of plant would you pick?" Catherine would NEVER let Cece walk out of the shop with something FUN so she'd have to settle on a plant that had some sort of cool function, she guessed. At the VERY least, she wanted to get one that looked cool.
"But belladonna is boring." She sighed, moving closer to the brunette and taking her arm. "There has to be something around here that is a little bit more exciting than that, right?" Like, something that they could BOTH agree was awesome? "Help me find something like that, Catherine."

While he seemed to have developed a well-stocked garden of his own already, with our without his father’s help (potioner’s habit) it didn’t stop Gideon from being on the look out for anything that might catch his attention and potential need. It’s why when this peculiar shop had first opened at the other end of Diagon Alley a few years back, the shopkeeper had been drawn to investigate. He’d have luck a few times, even if one or two had been for gifts for his mother and sister, but he didn’t give up. The former lion knew better than most that the unexpected was bound to happen at some point.
Today was a break from the potions shop and a venture into seeing what green things were present as the winter months were finally giving way to the new growths of spring. Stepping inside the little shop, the air that hit him was definitely leaning towards the warmer months. Gideon moved towards one side of the area, meandering a little as he debated if there was a particular region or item he was looking for on this venture.

Adam had been headed to the bookstore - in the wrong direction, of course - when he got distracted and paused outside one of the shops he had never stopped at before. He mouthed the name of the shop to himself as he stared up at it - Noltie's Botanical Novelties - what was a botanical novelty? Obviously, he was now curious.
Sticking his face right up to the glass, he peered inside and let out an "OOOOOOH" of realization as he saw what was inside. It was PLANTS! Well that was rather boring. He'd have plenty of time to check out magical plants once he got to school.

Wow, I never thought I’d wind up here! Heath thought as he approached Noltie’s Botanical Novelties. This wasn’t the type of shop he normally frequented - a budding (no pun intended) herbologist, he was not! - but it was where Claudine wanted to go. That was all that mattered. He was happy to be anywhere with her! He looked back at her with a smile as he held the door open. “After you,” he said, giving her an exaggerated bow as the actor side of him took over.
He followed her into the shop, his dark eyes scanning the selection of plants before darting back to Claudine. Did she see anything she liked yet? Who knows, maybe shopping here would give him an idea for the perfect birthday gift for her?

Claudine too had not frequented Noltie’s in a while. As a matter of fact, it might have been since before the start of her first year that she had been there getting her dragonhide gloves. As it was, she needed a new pair and her old one had become quite worn. She doubted that Flamsteed would approve of her using worn out gloves during Herbology lessons.
Naturally, her gentleman of a boyfriend reached the door first and held it open. His dramatics made her laugh happily. “Why, thank you, kind Sir,’’ she told him then made her way into Noltie’s. The earthy scents hit her first. What hit second was the amount of plants there. “Were there always this many plants?’’ she rhetorically asked Heath. Oh. That reminded her: Heath didn’t know why she was here. “I need a new pair of dragonhide gloves but maybe we can explore first?’’ That is, if Heath wasn’t in a hurry to be somewhere else.

That laugh… There was no way Heath could hear Claudine's laugh and not laugh along with her! He smiled, gazing at her adoringly as he followed her into the shop. Was he looking at her too long? Oops! He dropped his gaze, allowing his hair to fall forward to hide the blush rising to his cheeks. "You're most welcome, my lady," he replied, going back into actor mode to hide his awkwardness.
Understanding dawned in his eyes at the mention of dragonhide gloves. Oh, so that's what she needed here! He should've guessed… Somehow he thought she was in the market for plants; she was a much better herbologist than him, after all! A small smile played upon his lips. "I'm up for some exploration," he said. "Lead the way."
He stepped aside to allow her to pass, watching to see which direction she would go and which plants would catch her eye… hopefully without making it obvious that he was watching. He couldn't have her guessing her birthday surprise before he even thought of it!

Valerie needed out of the flat. Jerry's homeless apartment chic aesthetic was beginning to irritate her in the worst way and she felt like a ticking dung bomb around him. She probably should start looking for a place of her own soon and that may be entirely feasible once the film was released. Perhaps even then she could stop taking on so many additional odd jobs to help pay the bills and finally sustain a higher standard of living.
To her family back in Canada, however, everything was just fine and she was flourishing. Absolutely no regrets about moving to the United Kingdom upon graduating from Ilvermorny. None.
...none.
Noltie's Botanical Novelties was one of her comfort locations, which were very few and far between. It reminded of the greenhouses a Ilvermorny and then eventually those of London WU. Those days seemed like forever ago, a student with structure and knowing where she needed to be and when and why. She had been adrift for a while now...and it had not struck her until recently just how much shouldering that burden had been pushing her down and holding her back.
She had meandered over into the flesh-eating plants area of the shop, her attention specifically drawn towards the fanged geraniums for the time being...and remarkably, as content smiles were a rarity for one Valerie Gray. But there it was.

Claudine had received enough of those fond looks from Heath to recognise them now without a doubt. Was she used to them? No quite. Yes, they made her feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside but she still found it difficult that another human didn’t find her annoying or unfriendly so much that he wanted to date her. In reply, she too blushed also, knowing that Heath was doing the same behind those long hairs of his.
Lead the way she did. Claudine tried to decide where to explore first. Wizarding plants were easily recognised and since she had spent practically all of her life exposed to most of them, she made a beeline for the Muggle plants. Being among the pants reminded her of Professor Rainwater. How she missed him; his bubbly spirit and abundant enthusiasm always put her in a good mood. He had been one of those few humans whose presence she thoroughly enjoyed.
Absently, the girl paused by some foxgloves. “Pretty, aren’t they?’’ she asked Heath. “Maybe if I buy some for Ariel, she won’t hate me as much.’’ It was possible that Heath’s sister didn’t hate her but Claudine couldn’t shake the feeling that Ariel at least did not like her very much.

Heath peeked through the strands of hair covering his face to see Claudine blushing too, and his heart skipped a beat. Did she have any idea how adorable that was? For a moment, he was so overwhelmed with love for her that he forgot everything else. What were they doing again? He blinked dumbly. Oh, right, exploring the shop. Grateful for the distraction from his awkwardness, he followed Claudine. He was surprised to see her beeline for the muggle plants; he’d half-expected her to go for the wizard ones instead. He smiled a little to himself. That girl was full of surprises, wasn’t she?
He stopped alongside her, eyeing the foxgloves she pointed out. So she thought foxgloves were pretty? He filed that bit of information away in his brain for use later as a possible birthday gift idea. He nodded in reply, though his expression changed slightly at the mention of his sister. “I don’t think she hates you,” he replied with a reassuring smile. “She’s just a bit…” What word should he use? “...overprotective of me because of what I went through in muggle school.” He shot her a knowing look, sure she would understand what he was talking about, and he suddenly realized that with Ariel graduated, Claudine was now the only person at Hogwarts who knew about the bullying he endured.
He shook his head, keeping his eyes locked on the foxglove plants to distract his thoughts from wandering back to that time. “Still, it couldn’t hurt to give her something,” he mused out loud. If he knew his sister, she’d love any kind of gift!

Claudine would have laughed had she known what Heath was thinking. Yes, she was full of surprises. One never knew what she was going to say or do next. This might be a good thing as this could mean Heath would hardly be able to predict her and was less likely to be bored of her.
Looking at him again, she wasn’t sure how he felt about her remark about Ariel. Suddenly, she wished she had kept her mouth shut. But she also knew that she could trust him with anything, even her opinions that were different from his. “I suppose she’s looking out for you. Still… she should know by now that I’m not intentionally going to hurt you.’’ Claudine was slightly indignant at that moment, her dark eyes flashing slightly. She knew all too well why Ariel was protective but the older girl wasn’t going to be around every moment of Heath’s life to look out for him, was she?
“We can both buy a plant for her then. Just don’t tell her I contributed to the purchase.’’ The last thing Claudine needed was Ariel to think that she was a suck up. “What about something for your mother too?”
