Default Moribund's Pub

Overlooking the small staircase on the upper level, not far from Splinter and Kreek's, you'll find Knockturn Alley's premiere establishment. Unless you have business here, you will find the door to this pub is almost always locked. If it does happen to open for you, you’ll walk inside the pub, which is dimly lit by lanterns that throw out an eerie orange light. You may feel a distinct creeping feeling up your spine and that isn’t unusual, maybe you should trust your instincts and go somewhere else? The floor in Moribund’s pub is made up of uneven slabs of stone, darkened by age and from the build up of all sorts of grime. The heavy door closes silently behind you as you enter.

In addition to the lanterns, a candlestick sits on each table. Only the candles on occupied tables are lit, though they barely provide enough illumination to see by. The bartender watches you closely, almost accusingly. Its obvious that not just anyone is welcome in Moribunds. They serve food here and it’s surprisingly good but hardly the reason most of the regulars frequent the pub. Children are not welcome in Moribunds; of age witches and wizards only.

You could always return to Knockturn Alley of course, and you might just end up flat on your bum in the street if you cross the wrong people.

Felnott was not a fan of wandering down the twisting stairs, but this summer made the journey enticing. He climbed his way onto a stool and patted a money bag in his shirt pocket.

The wandwaver "sports" event was happening. He did not understand (nor did he care to understand) the point of these wandwaver activities, but he did know the art of gold. He knew a wandwaver competition was the perfect way to finance his own pocket; wandwavers had a tendency to support something with gold and he was a smart goblin who was more than happy to help them get gold off their oddly shaped hands.

He climbed onto a chair and took out a small notepad. Inside where scribbled numbers and the occasional word or two in Gobbledegook.

Korpsit watched his brethren from the moment he entered the bar. Hard as it was to believe, not many goblins frequented the alley. They were rare and refreshing thing.

Of course, the beady eyed creature had an idea of what brought this one down here. It was likely the same thing that had many wizards stumbling through the dark streets here. Galleons. Bets. The odds could be more or less favourable depending on how weighted a goblin's hands became with the glittering treasure.

With a grunt, Korpsit took the stool by Felnott at the bar. "Any interesting news?" He didn't frequent the above alley very much and welcomed any news that could become profit.

After one or two wrong turns, Jack had found his way to the pub. As he walked in the door, he was a bit surprised that the place wasn’t busier. Perhaps he had the wrong place?

But perhaps he wasn’t. There were a few goblins in the joint. That was a good sign. Goblins loved money after all. But Jack Roller hadn’t come this far in life without knowing that asking Goblins to make a bet was like asking for your fingers to get chopped off. No. Thank. You.

He sidled up the bar. ”Beer me,” he asked the bartender as he leaned on the counter. Where were all the witches and wizards in this joint?

Felnott nodded a greeting at his fellow goblin. "Sturnik has been making more trips to the vaults to keep the counters stocked." A helpful piece of information should anyone be interested in knowing there were times when security was otherwise occupied.

He assumed his companion wasn't interested in that piece of news though. No. He said it more for the wavewander. The thing looked impressionable. Felnnott was always looking for opportunities to influence wandwavers into proving how foolish a species they were.

"Here are current odds." he said sliding the notepad over, again, speaking loud enough to be overheard.

Jack took a long drink out of his beer and nearly spat it back out. It was warm! What was wrong with these people?! Beer was supposed to be cold. And this wasn’t beer it was – something else. He made a weird face, but wasn’t about to waste money by leaving it on the bar.

He turned, so his back was against the bar and he could look out at the room. The goblin occupants seemed to be engaged in some oddly loud discussion. All his brain registered though was ‘vaults’ and ‘odds.’ Hmm…. He wondered how he could get a look at that notepad.

Packet of pork scratchings in hand, Renata settled back into a seat at the table she had been at a few minutes previous with one of her fathers connections. She pocketed the betting slip only after checking the information written on the back of it for their next meeting and tucked into her goodies.

The candlelight in Moribunds was enough for her to observe lightly the happenings around the pub. Nothing too much and nothing too little. Just observational.

It wasn't often that Willow found herself on the cobbles of their Diagon or Knockturn Alleys, for there were just more interesting places in the world to be. The Quidditch World Cup, though, had made both places rather more fascinating than usual.

For very different reasons. But she was one-hundred percent the reason that one of the Portuguese Chasers was smiling after their defeat to England, even if she was planning on ignoring all of his owls. The Leaky, which was usually busy, was even more so, and therefore Willow took herself down to the quieter Moribunds, just in time to see Renata alone.

"Hey," she said simply, slipping into the seat opposite her.

Korpsit, for his part, was ignoring the man by the bar. His present company may have been willing and interested in pulling the wand waver's strings to make him dance like a puppet but this goblin was far more interested in the current matter taking place in England, one that would prove to be quite profitable in the end.

The goblin, reached for the notebook, but while he didn't guard it like a well kept secret, he didn't make it easily seen either. This was the sort of information he didn't need getting out.

"Not what I'd like to see. We," He looked to Felnott again, "may need to do something about this. Increase the margins if you will." Surely he was catching his drift.

Felnott was very aware of all the wandwavers in the pub. He was especially aware of the one seated close at the bar. That one was an easy target.

Felnott nodded in agreement. He adjusted some numbers in the notebook and placed the bag of money he had on him on the table. "Were these more the numbers you were looking for?"

As a bank goblin, numbers came easily. He had a good sense for what it took to get more. He also knew the best strings to pull to turn the best profit.

Since arriving in London, not a day passed where Renata hadn't consumed some pork scratchings. She wasn't particularly impressed by the packet she was currently eating from and set them aside just as Willow sat down opposite her. "Willow." She said quietly, wrists crossing on the table as she took in her new company.

"Didn't think you would come down here." Well, Renata didn't think Willow was the type of person to be found around anywhere. More so, she didn't think Willow was the type of person to find her in this place and sit down without regard for whether she had company or not.

"There isn't a player around today, Willow."

Bathes in Maple Syrup | Dancing Lobster | Mrs. Charlie Weasley | Seneca's Beard | That's So Fetch

Dante was, needless to say, over all the Quidditch hype. It wasn't the sport necessarily that was putting him in a mood, but rather the load of people that the event had brought in. His duties at the Ministry had increased due to certain folk being willynilly with magic, the guest rooms at the Zabini manor were full of family members, and everywhere he went he couldn't seem to evade someone who deemed themselves a sports fanatic. It all at this point made him want nothing more than a glass of firewhisky and some solitude.

But apparently the last desire of his was too much to ask for.

What normally was a quieter establishment, the Obliviator couldn't help but notice that there were more faces than usual. The goblins didn't phase him as he expected such a place would be ideal for their shady whisperings. For that reason, he ignored them. Though the presence of the magic-folk like him was arguably worth being curious about and did earn them each a brief look.

The man, however, didn't have a care in the world to engage any further. So he simply ordered himself the firewhisky he had shown up for and found himself a seat at the far end of the bar.

Increase the margins, Jack noted. Well, he had a few ideas about how to do that. One of which was tucked away safely in a pocket on his vest thanks to an undetectable extension charm.
SPOILER!!: Felnott the goblin

Jack nearly drooled at the site of the big bag of money that the one goblin tossed on the table, but he covered up his eagerness by taking a big swig out of his gross warm beer. Despite all of his own reservations and know-how about dealing with goblins, Jack found himself wondering if these two were perhaps the best course of action for implementing his plan. His big plan to make lots of money.

He just needed to bide his time until they were dune with their current business.

Korpsit was not a stranger to money, as such there was no urgency nor was there any eagerness as the goblin reached for the sack of coins. He weighed them a moment, having learned to distinguish by such a method whether it was worth his time or not. Finally, he nodded. “This is more in line with my desires, yes.”

He pocketed the coins, not bothering to glance at their eavesdropper this time. His voice neither rose like Felnott’s nor sank in secrecy. It remained at the same level, somewhat shrouded by the chatter floating around the room.

“With this sort of incentive, we’re looking at a wide range of possibilities. Did you have anything in mind and will you keep indulging the fool or will we take this elsewhere?” That last part he was sure to say loud enough.

Felnott grinned in a way that most definitely spread to his goblin eyes. The greed was very evident on his face. He reached over and circled a few of the teams. "These are the ones that need to be sold." As in, those were the ones that the wandwavers needed to *donate* to.

This time, the bank goblin did turn his full attention to toward the wandwaver in question. He looked the human up and down -- fool seemed an accurate description.

"Depends if it has a worthwhile offer." They could always use someone to drive up key donations.

It interested her that Renata didn't think Willow would be the type of person to come to Moribunds, for she was curious as to why other people saw her the way they did. She wasn't about to ask, though. "I live to surprise," she said quietly instead, one eyebrow raised. "What brings you down here?"

At Renata's next comment, Willows eyes rolled playfully in her pale, slender face. "Doesn't mean they won't be."

Korpsit sneered in disdain at the man that walked over, not surprised by his unintelligent greeting. “He may be worthless.” He informed his companion. “Walking up, not seeing figures but assuming he can triple it. How do you triple what you don’t know? If this parchment said 3 galleons? Why would I be interested in your 9? That’s still child’s play and we’re in the big leagues.”

The very big leagues.

The goblin pocketed the list of teams that needed “support” a plan already setting in motion to accomplish as much.

“Go on then. Say something to have made your interruption worth more than flobberworm dung to my ears.” Could he?

Felnott matched Korpsit's sneer with a loud laugh of his own. Foolish wandwaver was clearly unfamiliar with Korpsit. Felnott, however, preferred to be anonymous. It was easier to maintain certain useful connections that way.

His dark eyes scanned the wandwaver. A slight twitch of the nose indicated he was searching for any hidden gold. It didn't take him long to estimate how much could be hidden in pockets.

Go on and speak then, wandwaver. They were vaguely listening.

Taking the book from Renata and flicking briefly through it, Willow's eyebrows lifted towards her (very short) very statement fringe. "The World Cup seems to bring them all out," she said as she slid the book back across the table. She was impressed, but knew she should have expected as much from the other woman. Personally, her betting was pretty limited to hustling a stupid man who thought a woman as tiny as herself couldn't play pool, or darts.... etcetera.

If she was surprised, she didn't show it. Or, at least, her eyebrows remained in their normal place. "Absolutely delicious. Even when they're disappointed." It wasn't an emotion she generally found attractive, but it did indeed make them very accessible.

SPOILER!!: Goblins Gallore

The very big leagues.

The goblin pocketed the list of teams that needed “support” a plan already setting in motion to accomplish as much.

“Go on then. Say something to have made your interruption worth more than flobberworm dung to my ears.” Could he?

His dark eyes scanned the wandwaver. A slight twitch of the nose indicated he was searching for any hidden gold. It didn't take him long to estimate how much could be hidden in pockets.

Go on and speak then, wandwaver. They were vaguely listening.

Well, weren't they rude? Jack resisted the urge to snort. It wasn't like he had never dealt with Goblins before, but apparently American Goblins weren't as graceless as their European counterparts. But rudeness or not, now was the time to put his venture out on the table. Besides, he was running out of time.

"I know a guy, who knows a guy, who can fix the game," he offered up. Who the guy was didn't matter. How the guy did it might matter. But all that mattered to Jack was he wanted a part of the profits if the Goblins were going to use his inside information on the final match. He had planned on running his own betting ring, but since the Goblins had one established already - why not just dip in?

"For, say....30% of your profits, I will let you in on the details."

Ren returned the book to her bag when it was back in her possession and nodded. "Sports. The weakness of every idiot." In her experience, anyway. It was her easiest way in and was always where her best work happened. "You know where I am if you need extra money." And it wasn't just the betting that she had her hands in. Renata had eggs in all of the baskets, as her cousin would have said before her untimely demise. She always had done.

Clasping her hands together, she glanced around the pub again. Not concerned. Just... aware. "Don't you love a needy and disappointed man? They're always so giving and forgiving." And they were so easy to guess the safe codes for.

Willow acknowledged that with a nod and a tap of her red nails against the table. She was fine for money at the moment, but she knew that work could always disappear from under her and it was always handy to know that Renata was around to.. guide her, in such a way. Not that she saw the gifts drying up any time soon, at least.

The blonde laughed, low and throaty. "And so... unassuming," she agreed. Of course, they would never in a million years blame little old her for anything, would they?

Alphonsine could feel the eyes on her as she entered the pub, even with the hood of her cloak up to shroud her appearance. It wasn't so much that she didn't want to be recognized, but she was well accustomed to fitting in where she needed to, and these types of establishments were suited for being discreet.

Her eyes scanned the pub for any sign of recognition, eventually landing on the bartender before she approached him for a drink. Once she ordered two glasses of elderberry wine, she took them to an empty table and slid into a seat in a dark corner of the pub where she would wait. He wasn't here yet, but he soon would be. No one stood up Alphonsine Rosier, least of all the man she was waiting for.
