Default Fountain

What might be a work of art, or is possibly what nightmares are made of, is the fountain outside the Leaky Cauldron. Large, gaudy and rather obnoxious, it is most definitely a centerpoint of the area. Built of crumbling stone, the fountain is tall and contains three tiers. Starting at the bottom, the fountain has a three-foot high wall. In the center and serving as a support beam is a water serpent that rises from the pool and to the very top. Winged cherubs with wicked looks in their eyes hang off the serpent and dragons peer from around his climbing body. If it feels like the dragons and cherubs are watching you, it’s because they probably are. One cherub has been missing his head for centuries. Cherubs and dragons alike spit water in many directions, sometimes at different intervals, creating a beautiful display when sunlight catches the dancing water.

However, the fountain is not merely a great sight. Perhaps it is haunted, or maybe cursed, for the fountain has a tendency to spit water at people. Those who loiter too long may find their faces wet. Try to sit down on the edge without dropping a coin and you may find yourself doused with water. However – do not try to outsmart the fountain. Dropping muggle money won’t buy you any time. On the contrary, those who drop muggle coins will find themselves pelted with coins.

Oh, and just a warning. Don’t try to stick your hand into the water, especially in hopes of grabbing some money from the bottom. Creepy things with tentacles would love to bathe with you.

The thirteen year did not mean to be all nosey, but curiosity got the best of him at times. He only knew of one other girl who could speak a different language, and that was Yue. It was news to him.

Oh, an extended hand. He had momentarily forgotten about manners somehow, so he took her hand and gave it a handshake, along with a crooked smile of his. Kissing any girl's hand had never crossed his mind before, though he knew it was a gentleman's gesture depicted in movies.

"I-I think it's r-really convenient... t-to have one," he offered, if that was anything to sway her decision. Drew was glad to have one of his own, so he didn't have to panic every time he needed to befriend another owl to courier for him. But the question she had asked right after that was something he was hoping to avoid. "Uh... I have g-great friends... so... th-there's that." Hogwarts did him good on that aspect, but he was not about to speak of it in terms of safety. He considered the other question, though, and he chuckled a little bit just thinking of reasons behind the name. "I... I have n-no idea." It never bothered him enough to question it.
Dizzy nodded. "Yep! I'm from the Netherlands. Amsterdam. But just moved here a few weeks ago." She didn't mention why she moved, or that she'd been basically forced to transfer from Beauxbatons. She'd already learned today that bringing that up lead to questions, and it was all an awkward mess she didn't want to get into, yet also wasn't super comfortable making up a lie instead. Thus, Dizzy's new approach was to be vague and undramatic about it.

Oh yes. "I imagine you're right. Having your own owl, and knowing him or her well, would be very convenient." Which was why Runa and she planned on getting one to share next summer. Er...hopefully. Hopefully next summer. "Are the school owls good at least?"

Um....Huh. "Having great friends is a plus." She waited for him to continue but....was that really all there was to say?Oh...he has no...idea? Alright, well, um... Oh! No wait. That was him answering her about why it was called Hogwarts, not a continuation of what the school was like. "Uh, okay?"

Maybe it was her? It definitely wasn't her veela side, thankfully. He wasn't acting like an idiot to impress her or drooling or anything like that, which was a major relief. He was just acting painfully shy to the point he couldn't answer her about what Hogwarts was like. Was there some other reason? Was it her? "I don't make you nervous, do I? I'm really friendly. Honest! Ask Solstice!"

I trust she's well prepared for the year." The woman looked like a responsible parent and he was pleased they were obtaining necessary supplies.

If his heart hadn't been so horribly broken, he would have noticed her beauty when she looked at him. Her long dark hair blowing in the wind and those beautiful eyes, full of love for her child. "I am here alone. I have yet to be blessed with a child." His tone was a bit strained, slightly tripping over the word. He quickly shook off the thought of what should have been and refocused on the woman before him. "I, too, am out shopping for supplies. My luggage had an unfortunate detour and is still unaccounted for." He tapped the large brown paper wrapped package with a Madam Malkins logo. "Goodness, where are my manors. I'm Foster. Foster Davis. It's a pleasure to meet you, Mrs?"

"I'm quite sure. She's a brave girl,'' Kay replied, quite happy to gush about Emmalyn. "And rather brilliant too as she does well at the subjects taught at Hogwarts.'' Despite what the Hufflepuff may have thought about being behind the other students.

''I have yet to be blessed with a child.''

That could mean a lot of things, Kay observed. Either he and his wife or girlfriend were trying to get pregnant or it had happened but a tragedy had occurred and the baby was lost. The latter was quite a horrible thought and she hoped that wasn't the case. "When the time's perfect, you'll experience that joys of having a child.'' She gave him an encouraging smile. Yes, even though Emmalyn was technically not hers, she felt otherwise.

"Goodness! That's a inconvenient affair. I hope you get it quickly. It must be a nuisance to have to buy clothing when you actually have.'' That was a waste of money and time. "You're from the States, yes?'' The accent was a giveaway. "It's wonderful to meet you, Mr. Davis. Actually, it's Miss Stewart but call me Kaysha.''

Sitting and staring at her reflection in the foutain water, Philippa pulled out the mirror from her pocket with every intention of calling Alanna. And Mercy. And Emma. Not Noah though, because she wasn't sure if Noah even had a mirror, and she didn't want to get to his father by accident. The fourteen year old looked around to check that the setting behind her didn't have anything embarrassing in it when she noticed someone familiar.

Philippa squinted. He looked like he went to Hogwarts, but Philippa couldn't place him from there. And, she made it a point to know all the names of the pretty people at Hogwarts, boys and girls alike. So he definitely didn't go to Hogwarts. Perhaps... Durmstrang? She sighed. She hated meeting people from Durmstrang, they always annoyed her. With a shrug of her shoulders, the brunette was about to turn away again when the older boy stuck his foot out and tripped over some little kid.

What.

She gasped quietly at the (hashtag) utterly barbaric (hand to chest) trick, sparing one glance at the boy on the ground and openly staring at the tripper. Who didn't seem regretful at all. Philippa was confused for a moment before she found herself utterly delighted without the slightest clue as to why. Crossing one leg over the other, she adjusted her dark tinted designer shades and continued to watch him with a grin.

Would he trip someone else up now? Or start a fight! Philippa was ready for a fight, yes please.

Brave and brilliant. Qualities he liked in a student. He made a mental note of the name, filing it away under promising students. It pleased him to be doing so. Thus far, he'd noted far more potential trouble makers than those with the qualities to impress him.

"Yes, you are quite right." He gently nodded, knowing full well that only people with whole hearts spoke in such a manor. The type of heartbreak he experienced had forever changed him and he envied those who were ignorant to the pain.

He waved off the concern. "Although inconvenient, the matter has quickly been rectified and the shipping company has agreed to cover all expenses. I believe I've come out on top in the matter." He had been due for a new wardrobe, but the loss of his dress robes, handed down from his father, could never be replaced. He was also pleased with himself that he was able to have new winter gear included in the reimbursement.

"You are a very observant woman, Miss Stewart, I am from the States." He conveniently ignored the suggestion that he call the woman by her given name. He did not know her well enough to be so informal and she was the mother of a child, which further deserved respect. "Have you ever traveled to the States? The East coast fall foliage is quite a site to see." It wouldn't be much longer before the vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows painted the hills. It was one of his favorite times of the year to walk the ground and lose himself in thought.

Amsterdam. The thought being so far away from home would have been very scary to Drewett, and he was well aware that there were bodies of water separating the Netherlands from England. He only knew little about the place, from what geography and history books could offer and from his lessons with his tutors prior to attending Hogwarts. "Is it... is it d-different? Here and y-your home?" He was curious, and that was a question that textbooks could provide an answer for. Besides, he feared change. He could not imagine himself leaving the UK.

He offered a half-crooked smile at Dizzy. "Depends..." That was the most he can offer. "Some are v-very eager. There are al-also the... n-not so eager ones." Drew can remember that one time Pietro wasn't feeling too well, and he had approached an owl that just stared at him. It was a weird encounter, that's for sure.

Perhaps it was obvious that he was dodging all the direct questions about school. Drew did not want to scare her away before she could even have first-hand experiences with the horrors of Hogwarts. He could suggest that her parents read the Daily Prophet, but decided against it. Maybe the Prophet wasn't a big thing at Amsterdam as compared here. "Yeah," he shrugged a bit, an awkward smile on his face.

........What? "N-no... no, you d-don't," Drew assured, eyes widened a little as he shook his head. "I'm... I'm just... I-it's just me...." He let out a light nervous chuckle. It was probably too early for her to figure out that Drewett Slinkhard was one of the awkwardest students at Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. It really had nothing to do with her, or the half-veela blood lineage that he was unaware of. She was pretty, that was a mere fact he was not going to deny.

And so was everyone else at school, he realised. They were all starting to look pretty to him. Why were they all pretty now?

An enthusiastic nod answered Drew. "Soooo different. Everything is different. Language, culture, customs, food...." Everything. Even, she was beginning to notice, the personalities of the people...Well, maybe personalities was the right word. It was just...it was becoming clear that people here and people back home were raised on different values. That wasn't a judgement, just fact. They weren't better values, or worse, just different. And still a bit foreign to Dizzy.

Well...that's true of all animals, really. I think you just need to know how to approach them and be patient." Then again, she was far from an animal expert, so, maybe she was completely wrong about it.

Oh, good. Dizzy wasn't making him nervous. Nope, he was just nervous in general! That was a relief, at least. Well, for her. For him...well, if it had been her, he could just avoid her be fine, right? It would be good for him, but kinda bum her out. But being just nervous in general, well, you can't really avoid that. "Good. I'm glad I don't make you nervous. Um..." Huh. Dizzy was uncharacteristically unsure of what to say or talk about. He was still reluctant to talk about Hogwarts, for some reason, and well, she could try asking him about Quidditch, and try to get a little insight about trying out for a team at school, but judging by his nervousness, she quite doubted he played with any frequency, or tried out.

Oh! That's good a topic, then. "What do you do for fun here?" You know, her being new to London and all, it seemed like a perfect line of conversation.

If Mr. Foster only knew that Kay had also experienced heartbreak years earlier, twice too, he would have understood that she chose to be an optimistic person when certain situations arose. Her first heartbreak happened when she found out she could not have children and the second when her fiance died.

"As they should,'' Kay said, tucking the stray strand of hair behind an ear. "I would not use that shipping company anymore if I were you.'' She grinned now. "It pays to be observant but I can't say that I have ever been to the States though I have seen pictures of the beautiful foliage you speak of.'' Memories of the Ilvermorny members visiting Hogwarts washed up, especially those of Melanie and Duncan Williams and how they had caused her to be possessed. "I'm not too keen on travelling there at present. I've always wanted to visit New Zealand and Australia.''

I hope you enjoy your stay here.''

It wasn't often that he enjoyed conversation with a stranger, especially a female stranger, but Miss Stewart had a way about her that seemed to draw him in. It wasn't her beauty, though she was beautiful, it was more of the way she lit up when she talked of her daughter and the kindness in her voice. His usual anxiety around strangers hand't come into play and he felt almost disappointed that their conversation would all too soon come to an end.

"No, I will not be using that shipping company again." Hopefully he wouldn't be in need of another shipping company ever again. The move was far more stressful than he had anticipated and it would please him to never have to do again. He completely understood why she wouldn't want to travel to the States. "I spent some time in Australia years ago. Beautiful country and interesting people. I believe I would return for a visit."

He looked down and caught site of the time on his watch. "It looks as if it's time for me to go. I have an appointment that I must not be tardy for." He picked up his Madam Malkin's package and stood, never taking his eyes off Miss Stewart. "It truly was a pleasure meeting you, Miss Stewart. Please tell your...little human I wish her all the best for her third year at Hogwarts." Stewart. He would need to remember the name and find the young lady after the term started, or better yet, she would be taking Arithmancy and be in his class.

He paused for several moments before giving one last nod, turning, and walking away. He listened to the sounds of the fountain, letting their encounter roll over in is mind, until he could no longer hear it in the distance. The busy sounds of the street took over and the earlier calmness within was overtake by the chaos of Diagon Alley.

Oh! That's good a topic, then. "What do you do for fun here?" You know, her being new to London and all, it seemed like a perfect line of conversation.
That was a tad bit scary. Drew found himself intrigued by what Dizzy had shared, about how entirely different it was to be so far away from a place considered as home. At the same time, he knew he would never ever know what that would feel. He liked to keep to himself and inside his comfort zone. Perhaps he can pretend to live vicariously through the experiences of others. Close enough. "B-but you ssspeak good English... so y-you'll be okay," he shared. Survival seemed to be influenced by one's social skills, he decided, though Drew clearly wasn't doing well in that aspect.

Patience wasn't Drew's problem when it came to dealing with animals. In fact, if he wanted to, he could easily befriend any creature. The thing about dealing with them is that he always worried about worst case scenarios. But nevertheless, he smiled a tiny bit and nodded at Dizzy. She was right, either way. "Until... th-they decide your g-good meat." Now, that was worth worrying about.

Drew could have pretended he did not hear her speak to him when he involuntarily wheezed in her presence. However, he felt that would have been rude, and he wouldn't have wanted that to be his lasting first impression to anyone. It was definitely just him. He was very much socially awkward. Nothing to do with her. "For... fun?" Drew thought about this question a little bit. He was almost sure that they both had very different definitions of fun. He could spend an entire afternoon with a book, his Rubik's cube, and his pet owl... and that would be fun for him. But he decided to think more like his cooler and more sociable friends, which was almost all of them as compared to him.

"Lots of nice ssshops here in D-Diagon Alley. Th-there's a joke shop, an ice c-cream shop, a b-bowling alley too..." He could go on and on but even when he was familiar with the nice places here, Drew didn't visit them as much as he would spend time at Flourish and Blotts or the sweetshop. "Quidditch is a b-big sport here too..." Though that probably wasn't surprising, given the sport's huge fan following for various teams. He personally wasn't a fan, but he would watch matches at Hogwarts to support his friends... and that only.

Was Foster someone who was well travelled? Kaysha was intrigued by this mysterious man before her. It was a pity that their conversation could not last for too long of a time as they each apparently had their own ways to be. “I wish there was more time so that we could talk about your visit. It must have been exciting.’’ She watched him stand, much disappointment enveloping her. Never the less, she beamed. “It has been for me as well, Mr. Davis.’’ It was only fair that she return the favour in calling him by his last name. “I will certainly tell her. Thank you for the encouragement.’’

Kay was somewhat bewildered by the lengthy pause and she wondered what was going through his mind. When he seemingly came back to earth Kay gave Foster another smile in reply to the nod. Her blue eyes fixed on his retreating figure until he was out of her sight. There was the thought of if she would see him again that lingered in her mind.

She really hoped that she would.

Little did she know she was in for a surprise in a few weeks time.

Dizzy shrugged, but was still smiling and a light blush could be seen on her cheeks from the compliment. It was always nice to have someone compliment her English. "Well...no one really speaks Dutch but the Dutch, so knowing English is a bit of a necessity for dealing with the rest of the world. We get taught it early. Same is true for Icelandic." That was the thing about small countries with their own languages. Not really big enough for anyone outside that country to bother with the language.

Wait....huh? Dizzy raised an eyebrow at Drew. Until they decided you were good meat? Who? Solstice? The owls? "I'm not....I don't....Um..." The statement just seemed to come from no where and Dizzy was having trouble forming any sort of reply. "Are...are you scared of animals? Because I can assure you, owls don't eat people. And neither do....house cats." Big cats tended to if you let them, and house cats have been known to eat someone that was already dead...but they were dead already so that doesn't count. She wasn't about to point that out to Drew though, for obvious reasons. "Honestly, I'm pretty sure the number of animals that would decide you're good meat is quite a few, and really most aren't even around here." And those that were, like the Welsh Green, well...a dragon is rather obviously going to. There wasn't much need, in her mind, to worry about being eaten by any animals because the ones that would were very obvious.

"Oh." To say she was a bit disappointed in what there was to do around here would be a slight understatement. Sure, bowling and shopping could be fun, but you couldn't really spend the whole summer just doing those. London just seemed so...empty, compared to Amsterdam if that was really all there was. Amsterdam was so packed with things. For the first time, Dizzy was truly feeling homesick. "Quidditch is big in the Netherlands too." The fact he brought it up as something to do caught her attention. Maybe she'd been wrong. "Do you play Quidditch?"

That... was information that Drew did not know about. He had always had the notion that people from specific countries would only speak their language, aside from English which was very much universal. However, given how he's only ever been in England, he didn't really know much about how it worked outside of Hogwarts and the Stemp House. He had always found himself caught off guard when the multilingual people of Hogwarts spoke in any tongue aside from his own. "I... d-did know that," he said. He was grateful for this brand new piece of information, at least.

He had, however, noticed that sort of confused look at her face. Oh... oh. Drew ruffled his hair again. He figured he should have clarified that bit. This was embarrassing. "I... Uh... Sssome of them... They m-make me..." He mentally searched for a word to describe his relationship with certain creatures. Drew could only ever handle owls, a few mundane animals, and creatures ranked XX and below. It was a short scale, he was aware of that. But, hey, flobberworms were pretty nice pets. "...Nervous." He settled for that word instead, because they did make him slightly panicky. He was also aware that, at times, it was just his active imagination making things up whenever he saw creatures with teeth. He would face his fear eventually...but not any time soon.

And then the confusion was clouded by disappointment. Drew twiddled his thumbs at that. He was overthinking again. Perhaps, to her, he was boring. But let's be real, Drew knew he kind of was. He was nothing like his extroverted friends. He had long since decided that he would try to enjoy life the way a good stage friend would. "I-I don't go out much... I'm not the best p-person to ask a-about such things..." he said, all honesty. "I don't p-play, though. I just watch m-my friends.... b-but we have Quidditch t-teams at Hogwarts." The most he can handle was hover on a broom for a few moments before his anxiety caught up with him overstepping his comfort zone.

Poor Drew. He just seemed so woefully shy and scared of...well, she was starting to imagine it was everything now. She hadn't really thought much of it at first, but now, she was sure he had cast a few nervous and worried glances to the water in the fountain. "Really. Most animals are really great and lovable, as long as you don't like hit them or anything." Then you were asking for it, and deserved it, and Dizzy would not feel any sadness over what the animals did. So as long as you didn't abuse them, you were fine.

She nodded along, comprehending, even if not exactly understanding Drew. To Dizzy, the world was so big, and so amazing and so full of things to do and adventures to be had, she was rather concerned about not being able to do even half of what there was. And Drew, well Drew seemed the exact opposite, and to nervous or scared to try anything. Dizzy was sure she could help Drew break out of his shell a bit. Oh, yeah. Sure of it. In fact, Dizzy planned on doing just that this year at Hogwarts!

She was about to hint at just that, when she spotted Runa and Mama making her way up the street. "Oh, I have to go. But it was great meeting you and we should hang out at Hogwarts sometime!"

In one way or another, all the assumptions Dizzy made were accurate. Shy, scared, nervous. Those were exactly the kinds of adjectives that anyone who knew of Drew would describe him as. And yes, he was very skeptical of the water a little bit. One does not simply forget life-threatening incidents involving grindylows, but not like he had any first-hand experience. He just knew his friends were hurt because of that activity last term. "I-I don't... hurt animals..." He pointed out quietly. He wasn't the type to hurt anyone or anything, not even flobberworms. His safety precaution was simple: avoid scary creatures as much as possible, and that was necessary for survival if your name happened to be Drewett P. Slinkhard.

If only Drew could read her mind and understand her thought process there, he would have politely told her that he was very much contented with what the world of literature could offer to him. Physically, he wasn't going anywhere. He was aware of that, but between him and his books, all he needed was his imagination and appreciation for knowledge. Perhaps that probably seemed boring to her. He remained oblivious to her possible agenda, though.

"I-I'd hate to keep th-them waiting... It was n-nice meeting you t-too, Dizzy," Drew replied, totally fine that Dizzy had to leave. If anything, he should be heading back to the Stemp House too. He had his new quills and inks with him now. "...Uh, yeah, sure!" He didn't see anything wrong with them hanging out more, not at all. And she seemed nice. He made a mental note to be around to watch her during the sorting ceremony. "Sssee you around..." He ruffled his hair, a habit that wasn't going away any time soon, before waving a little at her.
