Default Flourish and Blotts

About halfway down the north side of the Alley stands Flourish and Blotts, the shop noticeable by its wide picture windows displaying all sorts of gold-embossed spellbooks, any new releases warranting advertisement and the occasional sleeping cat, as the shopkeeper’s two cats occasionally decide to make the window display their chosen napping place when they aren’t underfoot. Upon entry, all that seems to be visible are bookshelves, stacked to the ceiling and absolutely filled with books of all shapes and sizes. While it may look like chaos, there is a sort of order to the shelves and various stacks of books scattered throughout the main floor in addition to those shelved. A table sits close to the door which regularly holds sets of Hogwarts’ required textbooks every summer for the ease of students who may not want to hunt them down on their own, and a staircase, even more shelves filling the space underneath, leads up to a second floor that contains shelves of the various works of fiction from the Wizarding world and beyond.

Near the center of the shop stands the counter, where the shopkeeper can usually be found and which is also the location for the occasional book-signing or other book-related event. Surrounding the counter are displays of newspapers, magazines, diaries, journals and other small items that might interest the literary-minded customer. In addition, a large, leather-bound book rests on a small stand to the left of the counter: an index of all the books sold in the shop for the use of the customers who are in a hurry or simply don’t want to search through all the shelves on their own.

Toward the back of the shop, a door leading to a storage area and the small office used for paperwork and any other business the shopkeeper needs to take care of in private, a cat-door installed as well as the cats’ food and water while they’re in shop are there. Tucked away in various corners of the shop, half hidden by shelves and very cozy, are small reading nooks containing squashy chairs and small tables for a lamp, and a larger reading area including a fireplace can be found near one of the front windows. Enjoy!

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Book shopping wasn't her favourite thing to do, not by a long shot, but it was part of the summer aesthetic~. It came with the same territory as robe shopping, stationary shopping, potion supply shopping, make Emmerson feel better shopping, y'know, the whole works. That's the only reason Emm wasn't dragging her feet as she was lead into the book shop by her mother.

They had a long list to get and if she allowed herself even an inch of room, she would admit that she was excited to see the sorts of things she'd get to learn. It was all stuff the tutor would cover, of course...once she convinced her mother that sending her off was a horrid idea. It was a work in progress. Until then, school shopping it would be.

While her mother went to find a book or another, Emm gravitated toward the charms section. Magic was what she was really interested in and now that she'd gotten her wand, she NEEDED to know what to do with it.

The little girl wandered down the aisle, reading the spines as she went. She bet her mummy would teach her some cool things once they were done being angry at each other over this silly going off to school nonsense.

She glance around wondering if maybe the shopkeeper was nearby. The shopkeeper was bound to have some recommendations, right?
Once she had made certain, or as certain as possible, that the school books were going to stay where they were in their neat stacks, Elizabeth had turned away to check on the rest of the shop. She already knew it was as clean as she could get it, what with the sheer number of pages crowding all the stacks, but there was always something she could do. Besides, keeping busy was keeping her from thinking about the graffiti that had popped up elsewhere in the Alley, wondering if it was going to spread her way. As it was, she’d requested that Bella and Chrissy try to stay clear as much as possible given they’d need to probably buy a few things before next term, and she hadn’t brought Ari to the shop lately either. Just in case it was dangerous.

Either way, the plan was to stay busy, and she smiled a little when she saw the few customers browsing the charms section. Including at least one tiny one (Emm), whom she decided she was going to keep an eye on, on the odd chance she decided she needed help. First, though, she caught the eye of the other girl who seemed to be looking for her. “Did you need any help finding something?,” she asked, walking over. As it was, the girl seemed rather familiar, but that didn’t mean she might not need assistance.

Valencia smiled. Just who she was looking for. "I'm looking for a new book. Do you have a recommendation?" she asked glancing between the books and the shopkeeper.

"I've been really interested in magical theory lately and the evolution of spells. I've read a few books but I don't have an author or exact topic in mind." Yes, she was a ridiculous nerd who read history and theory books in her free time.

Noah Fence (none taken) was still very much determined to do his school shopping alone, just because it seemed like the approach he should take. That was what his intuition was telling him, see.

Except if it had been Lorelai able to come today, he'd have pulled her along everywhere with him, but there were other residents who needed her and that was okay (it was) and he'd just go back and tell her all about today later.

The only problem with doing the list on his own was that he still had a little bit of trouble reading things, especially a lot of words together, which was funny (apparently) because he had his notebooks with all their words. That was different though... he just didn't know how. But the point was that this made this process just a bit slower than it perhaps needed to be, but that was fine. Noah didn't mind. He sort of wished he'd brought his mask today though, except that had nothing to do with this process being slow, that was another thing entirely.

With The Stargazer's Guide to the Night Sky already under one arm, he rounded some shelves and emerged into the Charms section, ready to painstakingly seek out the next book on his list. Except then he saw someone he knew sort of, and decided to momentarily put this book business on hold.

Not one to dither about, Noah went right on over and put himself in her path. "Hello Classified." It wasn't her real name, he knew that. But it was the sort-of-name she sort-of-gave him. He remembered.

...

.....

Blink.

"Classified?" Emmerson blinked at the boy who'd approached, admittedly lost on both what he was talking about and who he was. Thankfully, after the first few seconds, she DID recognize him and once she did, she could figure out the business of privacy he was going on about.

Classified. Right.

"Emmerson." She offered this time, not wanting to be known around the castle as "Classified" before she got a chance to make a proper name for herself. Her real name. But more importantly, "Are you book shopping, too?" It was quite the surprise seeing her almost friend. They'd gone into Knockturn Alley together, an adventure more or less. It wasn't the same as nearly being eaten by acromantulas with Ezra but she could make exceptions.

Emm linked her arm with his and tugged him down the line. "Let's shop together. You can meet my mama. Which ones have you got already?"

Ashley looked around for books that she needed. She found all her school books plus a book of poetry, every book title in the healing section, Hogwarts: a history, a customized diary, customized envelope seals, a 300-pack of parchment, and some envelopes. And the Daily Prophet. She could barely see over her stack of books as she looked around for where to pay. Unless she was very mistaken, she recognized some of the other kids in here. From, everywhere? And she still had no idea who they were. But her arms hurt much too much for her to think about anything other than putting this stuff down. Too late though, because she had already dropped the stuff on her foot. Another injury. However this wasn't as painful as hitting yourself in the shin with a cauldron, so she was pretty sure she would be fine. She winced as she started to pick her stuff up, book by book.

"But why?" Kat whined as the entered the shop. "Aunt Hads has a bunch." She gestured to her Aunt, who was still waddling slowly after them as she caught up.

Mum shot Aunt Hadley an accusatory look. Aunt Hads barely noticed, at least in Kat's opinion. Her Aunt was nearing nine monthd pregnant with twins, and always looked somewhat uncomfortable in these final weeks. To Kat, as anxious as she was to meet her cousins, being pregnant didn't like fun, and definitely didn't seem like something she wanted to deal with. EVER!

"Katarina..." Mum only used her full first name like that, stretching it out eerily, when she was losing patience. "Aunt Hadley is an adult. You," she emphasized, "are eleven. You're not getting a tattoo."

But these ones do cool stuff like move and glow... Kat knew better than to argue though, and instead opted for a tactical retreat: "I'm going to look for the fiction section!" And before her Mum could respond or forbid it, she took off, disappearing into the crowd like a tiger in long grass.

Even better in terms of escaping her Mum, Kat found the fiction section on the upper floor, about as far from her increasingly surly Mum as possible. It wasn't Mum's fault really. She wasn't the best with stress, and the witching world was an unknown to her, a thing of lots of stress, and Dad got called into work so he couldn't help, which meant Aunt Hads couldn't simply nest somewhere and wait for them to finish. This was stressing Mum out even more, as she fretted more and more over Aunt Hadley and her pregnancy.

The smartest thing at these moments was to put plenty of distance between Mum and... Hello? You look interesting. Kat snatched the book, found a comfy spot to sit, and put her feet up and began reading. Always, ALWAYS try before you buy. Life advice from an eleven year old.

Flourish and Blotts was by far Heath’s favorite shop in Diagon Alley. It had books and cats; what’s not to like? Shopping list in hand, the dark-haired Ravenclaw beelined for the table of Hogwarts textbooks near the door. He consulted his list; it looked like the only new textbook he needed this year was for charms. Well, that was easy! Should he get his quills, ink, and parchment here too? He thought for a minute. No, he decided he’d get those at Scribbulus instead. They had a better selection, and he had to go there anyway to get pens and paper for Muggle Studies.

Tucking a copy of The Standard Book of Spells, Grade 4 under his arm, Heath made his way up the staircase to his favorite area of the store, the fiction section. Casually perusing the stacks, he stopped when a particular title caught his eye. He pulled the book out of its place and began reading as he walked to the nearest reading nook, looking up every so often as he went so as not to bump into anyone or anything. Maybe if he stayed long enough, he’d see the shopkeeper’s cats!

Lukas had been talked into coming in here while he was visiting DA with his older sister Hady and youngest niece Bryony. Okay, so it wasn't completely true that he had to actually be talked into going to the book shop. Reading was something he rather enjoyed, when it was about what he wanted, anyhow.

Pushing the door to the shop open, the twelve year old held the door open for his sister who was carrying Bry in her arms, the two and a half year old looking about ready for a nap.

"You go ahead and get all the books on your list and THEN you can get something extra for yourself, alright?" Hady cast a knowing look at her doe-eyed little brother. "I'll be in the children's area with Bry looking at some books with her. If you need any help come get me." She knew the chances of Lukas needing her help or even getting his school books first were very slim to none.

"I know, I know. I can handle it. Don't worry, Hady," Lukas grinned up at her, ruffled Bryony's hair gentle and turned on his heels to head to the upper level of the shop. Blue-gray eyes almost instantly spotting a very familiar face. Quietly he walked right over to her, flopping down in the spot beside her, lightly nudging her with his elbow. "Meow," he greeted as per usual for him. Obviously with a name such as 'Kat' it made sense.

He pulled the book out of its place and began reading as he walked to the nearest reading nook, looking up every so often as he went so as not to bump into anyone or anything. Maybe if he stayed long enough, he’d see the shopkeeper’s cats!
7th year. Cole was a bundle of mixed emotions as he headed into Flourish and Blotts to buy new school books for his last year at Hogwarts. He had grown a few inches over the summer so he had to make sure he didn’t dunk his head into any shelves or similar. Cole didn’t want to get in trouble with the shopkeeper. Pulling out his list, blue eyes scanned over the new titles. He needed new books in practically every subject. Seeing no sign of anyone he knew and knowing that he had almost an hour until he had to meet his mother in the clothing store Cole took the stairs in a few quick strides to look at the books in the fiction section. He had enough money to buy some books that he wanted to read just for fun and leisure.

Browsing the shelves Cole soon found two thick and heavy books by two authors he had read before plus a comic magazine about his favourite quidditch character. Not being able to contain his excitement he began reading the comic as he walked towards the general direction of the reading area, balancing the other heavy books in his arms. His eyes were on the text and not on where he was going, and soon he felt how he bumped into someone with some force, which made him lose control of his books that fell towards the floor.

Ashley glanced at the other occupants of the store. It appeared that someone else had dropped their books too. But they weren't looking where they were going and bumped into someone, whereas Ashley just clumsily dropped her book on her foot. Which one was worse? She wasn't sure. But she did know that it was polite to help other people when they dropped stuff. She limped over to the boy who had dropped his stuff. "Would you like some help picking up your stuff?" she said, setting down her giant stack of books. And bags of clothes. And bags of other school supplies. Ashley wished she had like three extra arms to carry all this stuff (and maybe buy a few more bestiaries and books on herbology. And also maybe the entire children's book section.). It was VERY heavy. "Also are you okay?" she asked to the kid who the boy bumped into. Books are very heavy when they fall on you. She had already hurt her foot by book shopping today.

The tiny one had acquired yet another tiny one, and yet Elizabeth hadn’t quite abandoned her decision to keep an eye on them. Nor was she about to stop trying to keep an eye on everyone in the shop, as she noticed several more people had started to browse the stacks. Only the mother of several children could likely manage that task, but then there was also magic. And Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer roaming the shop as usual, although the cats weren’t actually there to be her eyes. First, though, she’d help those who directly needed her.

“I’m sure I could come up with something,” she had replied with a smile. Obviously there was a reason she was being asked, and a reason the girl was in the shop and not just selecting her schoolbooks.

And there it was. “Which ones have you already read?,” she asked, conversationally, as she turned toward the magical theory section of the shop. Besides, knowing that would help her narrow down the possibilities. Hopefully. In any case she was getting the clear idea that she needed to go for the titles that weren’t necessarily for students.

The work of a shopkeeper never ended, especially over the summers when there were all the younger customers roaming around. The sound of a crash hadn’t escaped her notice, either, and it had sent Elizabeth over to investigate the source.

Something told her there was going to be no question where this little girl was going to end up sorted. Although the question of exactly how she’d be able to pay for it all crossed her mind as she knelt to help her collect all her books. “Perhaps it would be safer to just keep all these over at the counter until you’re ready to head out?,” she suggested gently, already prepared to levitate anything over to the counter for safety’s sake. Both of the books and the poor girl’s feet.

"oh sure thanks!" Ashley said gratefully. At least someone here could help her out. "I was about to pay anyway. Figured I couldn't possibly get more books than this without a couple extra arms. Maybe next year." She shrugged. Next year she was going to go for the bestiaries and plant section. She limped over to the counter and pulled out some money to pay. Of course it was a lot of money, but she was prepared and had more than enough. Like she always did. Ashley was 100% prepared for anything at this point. She had even picked out all the books in the healing section so that when she was older and dropped books on her feet she could stop herself from breaking anything. Unfortunately, that was a long time from now. Sooo, she was just going to have to deal until she could actually use spells. Also, how was she going to carry all of these books to school? She figured she would need an extension charmed chest, but had no clue where to get one. Maybe Wiseacre's wizarding equipment? That seemed like a likely choice. If only she could get all her stuff over there.

Valencia smiled. Oh good. She knew asking would be the best.

"I've read the ones that I could find on charms." she said. She began reciting the titles. "Achievements in Charming, An Anthology of Eighteenth Century Charms, Olde and Forgotten Bewitchments and Charms..." Which all seemed pretty basic to her. "I've also read a book specific to Mayan history." She had a very broad interest.

The more Heath read, the more absorbed in the story he became, to the point that he forgot to look where he was going. He continued walking aimlessly until he crashed into something (or someone) solid. “Ow! Sorry,” he mumbled, unsure whether he bumped into the other person or they bumped into him. The book he was reading slipped out of his hands upon impact. He tried to make a grab for it but only wound up dropping his charms textbook in the process also. He winced as something heavy landed on his foot. Weird, he didn’t think his books were that heavy!

As Heath bent to pick up the book that fell on his foot, he noticed that it wasn’t one of his books. It was only then that he saw who it was that he ran into. Cole Vance, blond, blue-eyed, Gryffindor… everything Heath’s own family wanted him to be that he wasn’t. Heath knew of him, having seen him in lessons at school, but he couldn’t remember ever actually speaking to him before. That wasn’t unusual, though; he had never spoken to most of the students at Hogwarts. “Here, I think this is yours,” he said, handing the book back to Cole.

He bent to help Cole with the rest of his books and pick up the few of his own that had fallen when he overheard a young girl (Ashley) asking Cole if he needed help with his stuff. The thing that struck Heath most was the amount of stuff she had! Probably a first year, if the bags were any indication. Oh, wait… was she talking to him now? “Yeah, I’m fine, thanks,” he replied. So this was probably his cue to do the polite thing and introduce himself, right? “I’m Heath, by the way.”

Nova always hated going shopping for school supplies. Mostly because...well...she didn't have a family to do it with. But, she was determined to not think about it today. She was finally free from the Children's Home she had been living in for the past 10 years and she was determined to make her life better.

Though the look on her face said otherwise. She couldn't help it...it was just her face.

Nova wasn't just here for school supplies, she was also here to find books for reading as well. Despite her rough exterior, she was a massive book worm and extremely smart. She hoped to one day be a writer, whether it was novels or for the Daily Prophet, she didn't care.

She made her way down the fiction isle, brushing her fingertips along the book ends, hoping to find adventure, romance, and maybe even a little tragedy in their pages.

Cole didn’t at first notice the girl he just saw a lot of BAGS. Blinking bewildered, he looked around and down at the heap of books now lying on the floor and feeling his arm throb a little. Had he just bumped into someone or been bumped into? Regardless, he had lost control of his books that we’re now on the floor except for the comic that he was still holding, and he had a bit of a sore arm. Turning his blue eyes to the other boy he apologized sincerely at almost the same minute as the other boy did. "I’m sorry for bumping into you. Are you okay? Heath right? I’m Cole."

Glancing over at the girl who was the owner of all these bags. Probably a first year if Cole had to guess. He smiled at her as he rubbed his arm. "I’m okay, just got a slightly sore arm. Nothing to worry about." Gesturing around to all her bags he said "Thanks for offering to help me. Are you by any chance starting your first year at school?" Turning to Heath he nodded as he accepted the heavy book. "Yes it’s mine. Thanks. Maybe i should have chosen a lighter volume." He mumbled with a grin as he bent to retrieve the rest of his books from off the floor alongside Heath. Looking over at the girl as she introduced herself Cole interjected after Heath. "It’s a pleasure to meet you Ashley. I’m Cole."

"Yes I am starting school," Ashley said smilingly. She didn't even know about this school two weeks ago, but she was still proud to be going there. "Nice to meet you also Cole." She would have extended her hand, but nobody, including her, had any hands anyway, so that would have been kinda dumb. Instead she nodded and made a very polite face. "If you're both okay, I should probably continue my school shopping," she said very reluctantly.

"Meow," Kat responded. It was sorta their thing. Her meow, of course, sounded much more realistic than his. She was never one to refuse showing him up with her ability to 'meow.'

"I can't decide if I like this book or not..." Kat read a few more lines on the page, then plopped the open book into his lap with a sigh. "Here. Tell me what you think about it." She sat quietly for just a moment, before eyeing his belongings. The boy was a candy addict. He had to have some chocolate frogs on him somewhere, and with his hands full of book, and hers free, now was the perfect moment to attempt a raid. Which is exactly what she attempted.

Noah was patient. Sort of. He could wait, and he did. He waited for the girl to reply and say hello back, or to tell him to go away and stop bothering her. Fortunately, she didn't do the latter, but then she didn't do the former either. But the point was that she didn't want him to go away.

"Emmerson," he repeated back to her. That was her real name; he had been wondering, and it had been making him slightly twitchy not having it in his notebook, but only when he happened to think about the girl who had shown him back to Knockturn Alley. The name was going into the pages as soon as he was done with these pre-written books, but he knew already there was no way he'd be able to spell it right.

Emmerson Classified. Except he knew that wasn't her last name either, he just thought it sounded... something. It definitely sounded something.

"Yeah-huh. I'm allowed to do all the shops by myself, so that's what I'm doing, but the books are taking ages and ages. Why can't they just have a shop which is only the books we need?" It would make it much easier. And faster. And then maybe he wouldn't have a headache starting to creep in.

Noah didn't really complain when Emmerson linked arms with him, because maybe she'd be better at this than him. He showed her the cover of the book he'd found already as they set off. "The stars one. Is she in here too?" Her mama, of course.

A small grin tugged at his lips. Lukas didn't at all mind that as always, Kat had to upstage him with her performance of a cats meow. Now it wasn't that he was bad at creature sounds, on the contrary he was rather good at imitating most of them, courtesy of his big sister and his father. Being around creatures pretty much his entire life he had learned quite a lot. Letting her win this little game of theirs wasn't at all a big deal to him.

Before Lukas could even get a glimpse of the book Kat wasn't sure she wanted or not, it was plopped down onto his lap. Without hesitation he picked it up off his lap to look at the cover and title. Even with his full attention on the book as he flipped it back open and read a few lines he knew what she was doing. Kat always was on the hunt for the sweets that he always had with him. "If you're looking for chocolate frogs there's one left... Bryony opened the other one on the way here." Hence the half eaten one that was missing its front legs and part of its head. What his niece wanted, she always got and what she had wanted earlier was candy.

"This book is pretty decent. Not one that I own myself but Hady might already have it." Closing the book he plopped it back down onto Kat's lap. "We can ask her if you want, she's with Bry in the children's area."

A smile crossed Elizabeth’s face as the young girl had responded to her. “Of course,” she replied, already in the process of levitating the large stack over to the counter. “Are you planning on conjuring more arms, or just planning on getting stronger?” Either question was meant with a sense of whimsy, not to be taken entirely seriously. “The books aren’t going anywhere any time soon, so you could pace yourself.”

The cost was going to take a bit to figure out, anyhow, but she took a moment to cast a few charms on the bag she took out first either way. An undetectable extension charm for sure, and one meant to relieve some of the weight. Only then did she start working on figuring out the amount. “It looks as if you’re going to owe 48 galleons, six sickles,” she concluded, still unsure if the girl truly had understood how much she’d picked out. Even if she knew there was still plenty of stock left.

"Achievements in Charming, An Anthology of Eighteenth Century Charms, Olde and Forgotten Bewitchments and Charms..." Which all seemed pretty basic to her. "I've also read a book specific to Mayan history." She had a very broad interest.
Elizabeth had returned the smile easily. A girl after her own heart, in ways. Not to mention it reminded her of her eldest daughter. “I see. Definitely a broad spectrum of topics, but there are so many other avenues we could go down.” Definitely not anywhere close to the basic subjects, title wise, but it did bring a thought to mind. “I did get a couple of new books on experimental charms and potions, if that sounds intriguing,” she continued, veering down a slightly narrower corridor between stacks. She hadn’t decided quite yet to put them out where the general public could find them, knowing there were plenty of customers who would use the information in the wrong way. Not only whoever was currently defacing areas in the Alley.

Ashley smiled. "Actually, next year I will be a second year, so I think I will only need one new book, which means that I will have more space for books!" she said excitedly. "But I am going to pace myself by only buying one new type of books at a time, like 3 of a section or something." She passed exactly 48 galleons and six sickles to the shopkeeper. "Here you go." It was very nice of the shopkeeper to get her and undetectable extension charmed bag. She was going to put it in her extension charmed trunk full of school supplies.

Then he could help her carry stuff. But no, he was too busy, so here she was doing everything by herself. Which in her opinion was the least enjoyable way of doing things.

I’m Cole."

"If you're both okay, I should probably continue my school shopping," she said very reluctantly.

Heath blinked confusedly. Wait, so Cole ran into him, not the other way around? Not that it mattered much… He wasn’t going to get angry about it when it was clearly an accident. Mostly he was relieved that his own clumsiness hadn’t caused it! His dark eyes peered out from behind a veil of long dark hair as Cole spoke to him. Oh? Cole knew his name too? That was a surprise! Heath didn’t think many people noticed him. “Yeah,” he said, the word meant to answer both of Cole’s questions. “It’s fine. Serves us both right for trying to read and walk at the same time, right?”

Ugh, why did he say that? Now Cole probably thought he was an idiot! Heath nervously ran a hand through his hair, searching for a distraction before he could say the wrong thing again. He bent to pick up his charms book and the novel he’d been reading, only looking up when Ashley spoke. He smiled slightly, but before he could think of anything else to say to her, Cole was already talking to her. Heath blinked. How was it that people like Cole and Ariel and Fiyero and… practically everybody else in Heath’s family always knew what to say? He wished he could be more like them! They made conversation look so easy.

Heath stood back, silently observing the exchange between Cole and Ashley. This was why he hated social situations! The more people there were, the more difficult it was to read each person, and if he couldn’t read them, he couldn’t become something they would like. It was taking every bit of restraint he had not to make his exit while they were talking to each other. Instead, he distracted himself by perusing the titles on the nearest shelf. As he did, he noticed a girl (Nova). “Excuse me,” he said quietly, stepping aside. Was he in her way?
