On a fairly chilly post-breakfast morning of the sixteenth of October, you might find yourself heading towards the first floor for another Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson. At this point, it might not be surprising to find that the classroom looks rather empty but you don't have to have a keen eye to notice that the classroom is covered in something you wouldn't even find in the castle itself, forget a Defence room.

Snow.

Looking around, you notice that every inch of the floor in the well-lit room is covered in soft, fluffy snow, causing you to leave footprints as you head further inside. There are no signs or explanations as to why that is and there certainly aren't any cushions to suggest that this is the right place to be. Confused? You might be.

Apart from the snow, there's something else in the room that might help to suggest that this is a Defence room. Lifeless and motionless, an array of dummies can be seen standing along the edges of the room instead of their usual spot in some of the other defence rooms. Maybe they could give you an inclination as to what you're going to be doing today?

Those who are observant enough might notice that along with the usual classroom decor, Professor Hirsch seems to be missing as well. Where could the man be and why wasn't he here yet? And, most importantly, did that mean that this was the right room or not?

While you're left pondering - or just enjoying the sight of the snow - come in and make yourselves as comfortable as possible...

Natalie hadn't really been very excited or even curious about the upcoming Defense class until she had arrived. First, the snow was noted. It was odd, but it was cool. Literally, heh. Second, the dummies were noted. So they would be practicing some defense spells, probably. In the snow? Interesting. Third, the lack of presence from the professor was noted and that was probably why Zoryn was doing snow angels.

Interesting. Silently speculating, Natalie stood amidst her classmates and just waited.

Juni had really been in improving in both DADA and Dueling club. It wasn’t her strongest subject but it wasn’t her weakest either. There was room for improvement it ever thing for her. Obviously she liked the linguistic of doing the spells. She always liked that part. Plus Hirsch was a good professor and that helped a lot.

Any time she could make a reference to something she liked, like last term with the Indiana Jones and the temple of doom lesson. Now that was a fun lesson. Really you never knew what you were going to walk in too.

Speaking of never knowing what you would walk into.... Juniper was heading into the classroom, and the first thing she seen was SNOW. Holy Hoth. The classroom was covered in snow. Since there wasn’t a Professor Hirsch anywhere in sight, Juni went a grabbed a... yeah there wasn't any seats.

With more people beginning to stream into the snowy classroom, Olivia shuffled off the the side a bit; trying to free up some space. Considering there were no desks, she didn't really see how they were supposed to be making themselves comfortable...? It was impossible to know whether or not Professor Hirsch was aware, but....standing didn't exactly feel that great. Especially for a tall girl like herself with achy joints. Frigid temperatures were murder on the bones, you know.

Professor Hirsch, do better.

Shifting in place to keep warm, she smiled as Zoryn dropped to the ground to start making snow angels. Liv liked the spunky girl a lot. She was fearless, and it honestly reminded her so much of herself.... Hm?

DEFENSE.....that had birthed the duelling club. The only thing that rivaled it was Herbology, to be quite honest. "I'm confident your week with start looking up!" Okay, maybe not SUPER confident, but...she wasn't going to be a negative nancy. That was really unhelpful.

....and Cassie!!!! Liv hadn't really spoken to her Ravenclaw friend in a while. They'd clearly missed each other on the Hogwarts Express and the feast had been super overwhelming for a plethora of other reasons. And lessons.... Olivia had obviously been so caught up in trying to get back on the Hoggie routine (with quidditch thrown into the mix) that it hadn't left loads of time for social interactions.

"Hey, lady." Her smile was bright and inviting. "....How've you been?"

Snow angels were going quite swimmingly, actually. Hopefully Professor Hirsch would take his time showing up so that she could make a few more before he got here. The Gryffindor was having a baaaalllllllllllll. Also, it looked like she was slowly accumulating an army of others to join her in the endeavor, like this tiny person (Skylar) “Yo.”

She hadn’t noticed the presence of other friends of hers who had just entered the room, on account of her making angels and all. But she did somewhat pay attention when someone (Night) approached. “‘Course! It’s TONS of fun,” she gave the young girl a thumbs up before throwing her head back in the snow.

They had an entire snow angel crew now thanks to all the first years and the Ravenclaw dude (Finn).

By this time, Skyler had moved on and was working hsrd at building a small snowman. Of course she could usr magic but thia way was a lot more fun. Well that and she didn't know very many spells exceot the simple ones her mum taught her like repero to fix things. When she heard Zoryn say yo, she smiled at her.
"Wanna help?" She asked already starting on a second ball for the head.

DADA. Not a class Emmlayn looked forward to. She didn't look forward to anything that had the possibility of hurting someone or something else, even if it meant protecting herself. But the DADA classroom was were she found herself, yet again, after eating far too much for breakfast.

To make matters worse, there was snow. Sure, most kids liked the fluffy white flakes of misery. She wasn't sure why. All snow ever did was make her cold. She glanced around at all of the dummies along the wall and wondered where Professor Hirsch was.

While CoMC was still probably technically her favorite subject, there was absolutely no question who Stasya’s favorite professor was. And therefore, why she basically counted DADA as her second favorite subject, after also going through two terms of dueling club doing relatively well, her statement to Professor Hirsch about wanting to make her papa, her parents, proud. Except Gobstones was more her way of making her mama proud. Either way, she’d headed down to the DADA classroom excitedly, realizing only after she’d stepped inside the room that she’d definitely not been prepared for this. Not when she’d been dressed more for the October weather than snow, and she’d quickly tried to cast a heating charm on herself before she’d walked any further into the snowy landscape formerly known as the DADA classroom. At least, she was pretty sure it was the DADA classroom. There were the usual dummies lined up along the walls. Maybe they were practicing dueling spells that worked better in the cold? Or maybe they were learning spells for survival.

Either way, she was freezing, so seeing as she didn’t see Professor Hirsch anywhere, she’d made a beeline for where Liv was standing, sliding between Ronan and Cassie who were standing nearby talking to the seventh year to immediately give her a hug. “Hi!” She didn’t mind if she just stayed there, right? Plus, she waved at Ronan and Cassie, for good measure. Not being rude, just trying to stay warm. Yep.

Defense Against the Dark Arts.

EVER since last term and the restricted section incident, Derf's mind had been unable to let go of one simple fact. THE FACT THAT A BOOK WAS MISSING FROM THE RESTRICTED SECTION WITH INFORMATION ON HOW TO CREATE A HORCRUX AMONG OTHER DARK ART DEALINGS. It was a hard pill to swallow, know that was floating around but the librarian and Professor Hirsch seemed to be...kinda unfazed. In fact...MOST of the staff seemed to be and Derf wasn't sure if it was them pretending to be fine so as not to freak students out and stuff...but it kinda did the opposite, you know?

At least to this Hufflepuff.

WHICH was why he had every intention of bringing the book front and center right at the start of the lesson where he COULD NOT BE IGNORED! Cause, you know, as he had told a few people with regards to how he felt about his badge...it felt like he had a voice now.

"PROFESSOR HIRSH! HAS THERE BEEN ANY NEWS ABOUT THE MISSING SECRETS OF THE DARKEST ART BOOK!?" he shouted unceremoniously as he entered the classroom without giving a proper glance around. Which he did almost immediately after and then felt figurative crickets chirping since...er...he had shouted at someone who wasn't here. Or was Disillusioned and pretending not to be here.

........was he even in the right place?

Bright blues quickly gave the scene a proper look and then he had to check the door to make sure he WAS in the right place since, well, people were making snow angels. "Those are neat and stuff....but personally I'm hoping for a snowball fight," he mused as he knelt down and piled up some snow into a ball with his hands....which meant OF COURSE he needed to lob it at someone and who BETTER to do that than Zoryn?

Snow....

Emptiness.

Vi turned to glance at her surroundings, taking in the room filled with dummies. It was also sans a Hershey Hirsch. Hmm... As she took a few steps further into the room, she noted the presence of the other students. "Hello! Interesting set up, huh?" she asked the group as she took a few steps into the room, keeping an eye on the fellow students. As Prefect, it was her responsibility to watch out for danger not only to her fellow Lions but also to all students.

Speaking of fellow students.... Some of them were mingling and others were just... Her eyes landed on Zoryn who was busy in the snow... focused on other things. A small smile graced her lips. Whilst she was happy that they were enjoying themselves, she was worried about what was coming next. Something felt... off. Thus Vi made her way over to Matt Solo and folded her arms. "Solo, I have a bad feeling about this..." she muttered. It felt like some sort of...test, per sey?

Professor missing. Dummies in the room. Covered in snow. Were they going to be facing off dummies at the moment? Dummies that represented some kind of snow creature? She gripped her wand a little tighter.

It was too quiet.

It was another DEFENCE class! Hanna SKIPPED to the lesson, walked into the room, was mid-inhale, ready to greet her Head of House and DaDa Professor when she realised he wasn't there. And... there was snow everywhere.

It was a bit cool already, but in here of course, she was nice and rugged up. She didn't need to remove her scarf or robes or cardigan. She decided to play, though. Like some of her classmates. Yes, that sounded like fun.

She dropped her bag in the snow, which was okay because it wouldn't break anything, and she sat cross-legged, playing with the snow. She made a baby snowman, and then a slightly bigger one. Although both were QUITE small. Maybe Professor Hirsch was having a sicky, or an actual sick day. Maybe this was their lesson - recreation!

Bel stopped short as soon as she walked into the room and shivered violently. Even if it was just the sight of snow it was instantly colder, even knowing she was indoors. The Australian girl looked around the room accusingly, expecting the professor probably would jump out from somewhere as professors did, and then she hugged herself and trudged through the snow to one side of.... well. The room. Or the space. Or whatever it was. She was interested seeing kids start making snowballs, but wasn't inclined to roll around in the stuff either. She pulled her robes around herself more and eyed the dummies too.

Snowball fight?

Or were they going to make a bonfire out of the dummies in order to warm up?

THERE WAS ACTUAL SNOW. WOOOW.

Mara stared all around in amazement. In Portugal, there was practically no snow, and yet... There she had it, a quite decent amount of snow. Her eyes immediately spotted her classmates having fun.... Making snowmen?
She immediately addressed one of the girls playing in the snow, who looked about her size.
"We can really do this?! Wow! I never made a snowman before!" Mara, the oversharer. Not that she minded, particularly. not yet, anyway. She pointed at her classmate's two snowmen "Those look really nice. I like the... erm.. baby one? So cool!"

Okay.

Class canceled on the account of snow? Doubtful. Kye raised an eyebrow, but by now she had gotten used to the weird. Read as: Magic School. ‘Nuff said.
As she looked around, Kye noticed that there was no Professor Hirsch.
Uhm… Marco?

Unsure of what the professor had up his sleeves or what he wanted them to do, Kye picked up a bit of snow and started packing it into a snowball. Not that she was going to throw it at someone!! Although, that might be pretty funny… If Professor Hirsch was spying on them and decided to jumped out, GUESS WHO WOULD HAVE A FACE FULL OF SNOW.

Wet.

Her feet were wet. And cold. Cold and wet and Rylee had no idea why. At least not until she looked down to see the fluffy white substance that covered the entire room. Snow. There was SNOW EVERYWHERE! Her feet may have been wet and cold and she didn't have her gloves on but that didn't stop her from kneeling down and scooping up the snow into her hands. Where was her brother when she needed him, they could be playing in the snow right now if he were here.

Bright blue eyes scanned around the room quickly in order to greet Professor Hirsch and tell him how epic this was but he was nowhere to be seen. Well that was curious... very curious. Her fingers twitched slightly nearly going for her wand as her big sisters words played over again in her head 'Keep yourself prepared and ALWAYS be aware of everything, just because you can't see something doesn't mean it's not there...'

Rylee turned in a slow circle looking for anything else out of the ordinary, well beside the snow and everyone playing in it. There were dummies in the corners of the room and a missing professor. That didn't give away to much honestly... least not to her. All she really wanted to do was play in the snow... but this was supposed to be a lesson. It was taking a real lot to remain were she was and not run off and join the others. While bouncing on her heels she molded the snow in her hand into a ball, still glancing around.

She could have fun while paying attention to her surrounds. It was just like an adventure outdoors in the forest at home... only inside and with snow.

Man, some people were SOOOO uptight!! Why were they all just standing around!? They basically had a FREE period with INDOOR SNOW since their Professor was no where to be found! Like, no offense, but Zoryn was incredibly disappointed in her peers. She did, however, appreciate Skylar’s enthusiasm for the snowman she was building, but before the Gryffindor could respond to her question………

Right in the gut too!!

Zoryn didn’t waste even a moment hopping up and taking a look around to see who the perpetrator was. She found Derf immediately and quickly fell to the ground to make her own snowball and threw it right back his way….

READY..... AIM..... FIYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!

Only she missed.

Defense Against the Dark Arts was a class that Zita wasn't horrible at nor did she truly care about it. Maybe she'd put it on her list of need to find someone to do her homework in exchange for snogs. Yes, this was working out pretty well for her actually. She looked around for a person that might be willing when she froze. What was going on here?

Her lips turned into a huge childlike smile, snow! She loved snow and everything about it and seeing it in the classroom made her excited and want winter and Christmas that much more. Trying to remind herself that it was still only October and her favorite holiday was coming up first she moved more into the room. Bright eyes scanning the area she gave finger wiggles to all.

Since there wasn't really seats per say she couldn't give a lucky person her presence but she did linger in the front part of the room and in the center, exactly where she should be for all to see her beauty in the snow.

Skyler winced at the sudden yelling as a yelling student not realizing what was going on, ran into the room. And really? Can you guys not see the snowball fight going on?
Snow! Snow everywhere!! Skyler swirved out of the way of a flying ball aimed at Zoryn barely missing the snow man that Skyler was building. She grinned and packed some snow into her hands the snow man quickly forgoten as she threw the ball back at the one who threw it at Zoryn. Who was it again???

Now, this was a class that could go one of two ways. It wasn't a guaranteed disaster like Potions was, but there were often features and activities that could - put simply - set Abra off. But, unlike all the other lessons in which that seemed to be a common problem, in Defence Against the Dark Arts there was plenty of good reason for it. They were meant to learn about unsettling things in order to know how to deal with them; it was sort of the whole point.

Which was why Abra was always on his guard right before a Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson. He almost always attended them too, because, perhaps for obvious reasons, he felt like he needed to.

But despite trying to prepare himself for anything, once Abra reached the classroom he was taken by surprise. What he'd expected, if not a normal classroom, was some kind of terrifying set-up. But this was... snow?

... Though, having said that, snow was pretty awful too. Because it was COLD, and Abra was NOT PREPARED for the cold, and even when he was, he despised it. For this reason, he lingered outside the room a few feet from the doorway, unsure about going in just yet, in case it wasn't magical snow and actually felt as cold as it looked (not quite realising that he probably would have been able to feel the chill from where he stood if that was the case, and that Professor Hirsch would have had the decency to forewarn them). Did he had time to run back to his dormitory and grab, like, seven sweaters?

SNOOOOOOOOW. THERE WAS SNOW ON THE CLASSROOM.

THIS WAS SO BEYOND COOL.

Emma was SO excited that she didn't even pay attention to the dummies, or the confused looks from kids who weren't excited about the snow (HOW could you not be excited about SNOW??), or even wonder WHY there was snow in the classroom. The second year ran past Abey and PLOWED through the snow with an EXCITED yell. "SNOOOOOOW." A million and one ideas about what to do first ran through her head, but it was the snow ball flying across the room at Theo that had ONE sticking in her head.

"BARRAGGGGGE!" She shouted in the ultimate surprise attack mode, scooping up a handful of snow and tossing a hastily made snowball at THEO.

But the dummies raised their arms in unison and pointed their makeshift wands at a random direction around the room and directly at the students. Light burst out of the wands as Stunning Spells, Babbling Curses, Tarantallegras and many other duelling spells were shot out. Some ricocheted off of the walls, others made their way to the students but one thing was for sure: the atmosphere in the classroom was completely different now.

Constant vigilance, anyone?

OMG...what was that?

Everyone else saw that right? She wasn't seeing things....that dummy totally moved..... Magnolia looked around to see if anyone else was as freaked out as she was by the twitching dummies...

Maybe one of the students were trying to be funny, and if they were she was definitely not in the mood to deal with that right now.

Ugh...where was Hirsch?

Before she could even react, Magz was hit with a spell. She opened her mouth to scream but nothing but gibberish came out...

Huh....She looked around wildly to see if anyone else was hit too. She needed help....

Once again the fourth year opened her mouth to ask for help but....crap load of gibberish.

It had took her a few moments but Magnolia realized soon what was happening and dropped to the ground, then cast a shield charm to protect herself from anymore spells hitting her.

Ugh..so cold.

WHO WHAT WHERE WHEN

WHY was Théo hit with a snowball and another one hit him. He was just about to help Skyler and listen to the answer to Kit's question but nope now it was on like donkey kong. He shook his head and Skyler and gathered up his own snowball and chaser aims and shoots it right at Zoryn. One down. He went about gathering another one up and shot it at Emma since Emma pls.

He was just about reading to get some more ready and well something happened to get his attention and well the Dummies werent being Dumb right now.

DUCK AND COVER.

Uh, well where can he go for cover.

Nowhere so protection spell it. Théo cast one immediately as a spell ricocheted towards him. Well this was fun. Complete chaos but fun

Constant vigilance, anyone?

Natalie was still positioned near the back of the classroom as more students filtered in. Her attention was turned drastically when Derf entered the room, shouting a question to the professor that wasn't even there. She smiled a little bit and then watched the mini snowball fight that ensued.

It was amusing.. until other things than snowballs were flying.

Natalie thought she saw a flash of light, but wasn't quite sure... until one flew right over her head. A scream escaped her lips and Natalie dropped to the floor, covering her head with her arms as the Dummies along the wall started shooting out spells at random. What the-?!?!

Supposing she should do more than just cower in fear, Natalie fumbled for her wand in her robes and put up a spotty shield charm, which was the best she could produce at the moment.

The dummies lining the outer edges of the wall twitched in unison. This happened just once and anyone watching might be led to believe that they were seeing things.

But the dummies raised their arms in unison and pointed their makeshift wands at a random direction around the room and directly at the students. Light burst out of the wands as Stunning Spells, Babbling Curses, Tarantallegras and many other duelling spells were shot out. Some ricocheted off of the walls, others made their way to the students but one thing was for sure: the atmosphere in the classroom was completely different now.

Bel saw the dummies raise their arms before anything happened thanks to two things: one being that she just happened to be looking, and two being that she was right next to one of them on the edge of the room. She ducked behind the dummy and used it as a shield as spells went everywhere.

WAAAAAT.

Bel did not have her wand out or anything. She wrestled with her trouser pocket to try and get the thing out of it. WERE THEY BEING GRADED ON THIS?

HER WAND WAS STUCK IN HER POCKET LINING.

She put her fists up and backed against the wall, still behind one of the dummies. Never mind her, Mr Dummy. She was just gonna mind her own business and use you as a shield.

Emma GIGGLED quite happily as her snowball hit Theo, bouncing around like one of her pet rabbits while she made yet another snowball to throw at him when he retaliated! She shielded with her arm, and moved to throw back when a force hit her square in the chest, knocking her flat on her back in the snow and with a sharp pain in her chest. "Owww." She clutched at her chest and rubbed at the pain to bring herself some ease.

WHO HIT HER WITH A SPELL????

AND WITH NO PROFESSOR HERE????

It took her a moment, but she then noticed that everywhere spells were flying around and from the DUMMIES no less. Forcing herself to push past the dissipating ache, she rooooolled on her stomach and kept low since she didn't know what spells were being sent around (though she did recognize some of them she thought by their colors). She had to defend herself, but the best defense was a good offence, right? But she also needed a shield, and Emma couldn't cast a shield AND send off spells. The second year had an IDEA. While still lying flat in the snow, she wiggled enough from under her while also using her arms to gather up snow, and making up a makeshift snow wall big enough to shield herself.
