Default DADA Lesson 1 - TBA

As promised, you find yourself heading to the Defense classroom bright and early the morning after the feast. Hopefully, you've made use of the hearty breakfast the elves provided because there's a good chance you'll need it. This likely went without saying as this class tends to be on the more...physical side.

When you enter the room, you find it's not any sort of room at all. On the contrary, for those who've been to this school from prior years--particularly those a little hard of hearing--the place resembles the one and very same Forbidden Forest. The sudden change to night may be a bit jarring to some while others may be pleased to return to the illusion it isn't, in fact, morning.

The Headmaster stands just inside the door, waiting for everyone to join him among the trees. An ominous full moon hangs low, seeming to touch the tops of the towering trees. A chill sweeps through the forest and in the distance, there is the sound of rustling.

Step lively, this is one class the Headmaster would rather miss.

OOC: Welcome to the first DADA lesson!! Don't forget to read the classroom rules before posting. I'll have the first question up in 24-28 hours

Please note: The students are not in the classroom, please do not RP them coming in and taking a seat. Thank you

Charlie nodded at the professor as he started the class. Of course he wanted to know what they would do if tossed into a forrest right away. Like who actually wanted to go into a deep dark forrest and possibly die. The name legitimately had Forbidden in it, what makes anyone think that they wanted to go inside of it. Sighing she tried to set that aside. She needed to take note of all the things that she needed to learn this term so if another war happened she didn't feel defenseless.

Hearing the question about large scary spiders she nope-ed right the heck out of that conversation. Would Trent realize she was missing if she just slipped out right now? Would anyone believe she had actually passed out if she dropped to the ground right now? This does not sound like a lesson she wanted any part o and she was really annoyed for taking the course this point. Glancing back at Gracelyn she wondered if she would help her escape or not.

Constant Vigilance! O_O AWAKE!

No. They were seriously going to have to learn about acromantulas? Margaret shrank a little bit. After being left to fend for themselves in the real Forbidden Forest and nearly being eaten by acromantulas in her first year, she was not looking forward to have to actually see them again. Although... well, maybe they would be less scary if Trent taught them how to defend themselves.

Hmmmm...

What made them most dangerous, though? Margaret raised a tentative hand. "Well, they have eight legs and two pincers, so they could probably grab one person and still chase down another since their legs are free. So they can hunt more people more quickly, which isn't good," she said.

curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog

Adam usually LOVED magical creatures - but that was not the case with acromantulas. For OBVIOUS reasons. Creatures were cool, but bugs? Yeah, no, Adam did NOT do bugs.

And as far as Trent's question, he paused for a moment before raising his hand. "I think they're dangerous because they're smart. At least, Aragog was. He was able to have a whole conversation with Harry Potter, which shows he was capable of human intellect and that, quite frankly, is TERRIFYING," he explained with a deep frown.

"Bet you taste like kettlecorn, Kiz," Phoebe gave Kizzy a squeeze. Comforting big sister, right? Or was it rude to suggest that her little sister might be delicious to a giant spider? No! Everyone wanted to believe they were delicious.

But no spider was ever going to eat her sister. Nope.

"Spiderwebs are the most terrifying thing about them, I think. Plus they talk. So they wrap you up in spiderwebs to save you to be a future snack, and then they TALK to you? Like what if they're philosophical? Or want to sing off-tune showtunes until they get hungry again? What if they are secretly POETS? I'd rather just get eaten."

SUMMER FOREVER

Acromantulas?? Valentina's eyes widened. Did that mean they had to get close to a giant man eating spider? In the forbidden forest? That didn't sound good at all. Maybe she should have just left the classroom when Nem did. She nervously glanced at the forest before shifting her gaze towards the headmaster again.

"They are dangerous because they can think." Like someone said. She opened her mouth to continue when she heard Phoebe say something about getting wrapped in spiderwebs.... That's scary. At least, they were going to learn to defend themselves. But, STILL. Was it just her or did it just get even more chilly?

Oooooof.

This plan, didn't go smoothly. Apparently, the Headmaster didn't appreciate Kayne's entrance in the slightest. Even though he might not have acted like it sometimes, he still did know when to politely stop with the shenanigans sometimes, and just smiled and left the room, doing as told and putting on his uniform, making it back just in time to hear the second question being asked.

His theory about what they would be dealing with was confirmed, and it was not good in the slightest. Kayne was by no means afraid of spiders, he just simply didn't like them. Especially acromantulas. Only a fool would actually think an acromantula is cute. With an outstretched hand, the fifth year spoke up "I personally think acromantulas are dangerous because they're venomous. Also, since they're larger in size, that obviously makes them a bigger threat as well."

Acromantulas. Of course. It had to be acromantulas. Heath had faced them once and had no desire to do so ever again, but he was more worried for the girlfriend than he was for himself. He instinctively looked at Claudine with concern. He knew how hard this had to be for her! Then his dark eyes suddenly burned with determined fire as he looked around the forest, as if half-expecting an acromantula to appear at any moment. And if it did, he would be ready for it! Granted, he didn’t expect to face an actual acromantula because when had Headmaster Trent ever put them against a real monster? For that matter, how would he get one to co-operate even if he was so inclined? Never mind, it didn’t matter. The acromantulas might not be real, but the trauma was.

As Heath heard the next question, his thoughts again turned to that lesson under the fake headmaster. Honestly, the scariest thing about that day had nothing to do with the spiders. In his mind, the scariest part was the way everyone argued and were unable to agree on a strategy… but that wasn’t the question the headmaster asked. He considered the acromantulas’ size, numbers, poison, pincers, but in the end, his thoughts went in a different direction. There was one quality that he found more dangerous than all the others combined… a quality that they shared with the man who brought everyone to the Forbidden Forest that year.

“They’re dangerous because they're ruthless,” Heath said after raising his hand. “They will stop at nothing to kill you if they think it’s in their best interest, and there's no reasoning with them.” In his opinion, that was the most dangerous quality in any opponent, human, creature, or otherwise.

What's that one quality, over everything else that makes it something you don't want to run into?"

Oooooh Giant spiders. Max was afraid of spiders, he admitted. He raised his hand.
"That they are always in large groups and that they are large man eating spiders."
Okay, so the last one was kind of a "duh" answer but yeah. You wouldn't want to run into one or a few.

"Numbers, yes! It's rather uncommon to find a lone acromantula. If you see an acromantula, you can be sure there will be others to follow." As if ONE oversized spider wasn't enough. At least the little ones didn't tend to form colonies. "Good points."

He made mental note of that, as he had not pulled out any notes due to the rather strange setting they were in.

Question number two was posed, and Evan raised his hand to provide response and waited until his name was called upon before offering anything. The quality that made you most want to not stumble upon one? Outside of the fact they were... you know, giant man eating spiders. "Acromantulas are incredibly vicious creatures, they secrete a venomous poison from their pincers."

Seemed a good reason to him to stay away. Though he was beginning to wonder if the Headmaster had other ideas on that given the nature this discussion was taking...yikes.

Malachi nodded. Venom, again, as if the creatures needed more to make them vicious. "You're absolutely correct. That venom is the sort you don't want to have anything to do with." And while that wasn't something they would necessarily need to worry about today, it was something he hoped everyone was making note of.

First danger that crossed his mind though: Tripping over branches/tree stumps/his own feet/etc. Seriously. Falling could really throw one off course. Be careful of the plants. Don't be quick to cast light. Solid points that in theory worked, but sometimes theory didn't always compute into the actual world when you had to think quickly.

"Acromantulas always seem to have an appetite for lost humans." Really, he didn't want to run into a hungry spider. "They're intelligent creatures that can counter any argument with their insatiable appetites."

"It does seem that way, doesn't it?" The Headmaster replied, nodding along to the boy's words. Always the lost ones, never the ones prepared with wands ready and waiting to handle them. "Coupled with the intelligence, it's certainly a bad combination."

"Absolutely not." He may not have been there physically during the last "stint into the forest" under Rosier, but he'd heard enough to know the students were not likely to survive. Further, he'd seen them with fake Kelpies--relatively harmless creatures once you knew what you were doing. Given the...disaster that had quickly devolved into, Malachi had made the easy decision to continue simulations for now.

"There will be no real acromantulas anywhere on the school grounds so long as I have anything to do with it."

And yet, here was the third year, an evolutionary conundrum, being entirely taken by surprise by Remy when she slinked up out of the enchanted darkness and to his side into the wand light. Sort of like when you held a flashlight under your chin while telling a scary story, sort of. So there was a small jump and twitch of the shoulders, but a smile setting in soon enough along with a soft 'hey'.

Remy always knew how to stroke his ego in just the right amount which was to say any and all amount. He was always a bit of a proud peacock whenever she was around and he liked that feeling.

Soon enough, however, the headmaster had his attention and he was simply nodding at what was said in response to his question. Sometime in the future was all the third year was asking for and with four more years came four more chances for it to happen. SO. Holding you to that maybe, headmaster. Though he was also well aware that when adults promised a maybe it was really no promise at all. Still, a little Gryffindor could hope.

And speaking of stroking egos, he caught Remy's answer being about light. Yes. Thank you. Atlas Flobberworm Flamsteed was ahead of the curve while also being about 50 yards behind. But before he could appreciate the subtle back rub or even think to offer the headmaster a response to their question (which would probably be food and a water source since if he was dropped off in some forest somewhere...he was probably stuck there for a while and was gonna need something to survive), the headmaster was telling Nemesis Upstead to leave. The Gryffindor's mouth hung open and then closed and opened again. But...hadn't...what...why... Last night at the feast had been hurtful and weird...but now kicking the Slytherin out of class and denying an education on the day?! Also...isolated them again... He frowned and looked at the light on his wand and just kept quiet. And speaking of feeling ostracized and made to look stupid ... he DID catch all the jabs regarding having a lit wand in the forest and the embarrassment that came with that - no one else had a lit wand so, YA KNOW - caused his shoulders to hunch and he muttered a sheepish Nox to put the light at the tip of his wand out.

Was it shocking to anyone that his marks in this class were not the best? Mastering theory and spells was not exactly how his self preservation kicked in.

Aaaaand speaking of questionable self preservation...DID THE HEADMASTED JUST SAY ACROMANTULAS?! His blue eyes were practically sparkling with excitement. Sure, they were giants that happened to have a taste for human flesh, but it wasn't like it was in their nature to go hunting down humans and eating them. If you happened into their nest and disturbed their place of residence, anyone would be a little upset about that and want to lash out. Not to mention they were a protective species as they were designed by wizarding kind to be guards.

...which brought Atlas to his answer, so cue a hand up.

"They were designed by wizardingkind and are not something found naturally. Maybe a product of hubris, thinking that witches and wizards were above nature...so kind of some karma that they like to eat us and can use human speech against us," he shared thoughtfully and almost as though he admired the irony of the twist. "They were created before the Ban on Experimental breeding, after all...and were breed to be fierce and protective...and sure, you can say that about a lot of creatures, but fewer were designed and created by wizardingkind to, potentially, serve just one purpose and that is to guard an area and rip apart any trespassers."

Spiders! YAY! He wished Araneus could talk too.

For once in his short Hogwarts career, Atlas hardly seemed to flinch nor be afraid of the topic of today's lesson.

There was...some amount of internal shuddering as this Flamsteed spoke. Yes, designed to be exactly the way they were. Someone actually went out of their way one day thinking "HoW cAn We MaKe SpIdErS sCaRiEr?"

A sobering reminder, as it always served to be.

"You're definitely right there. Engineered like they were, they're set to their task and can do it more effectively than most." Specifically because it was in their very makeup. Horrid, truly.

That.

The seventh year tried not to look too terrified as she stared at Trent. Did he not know that acromantulas were her worst fear? It was her Boggart. Oh dear Merlin. She was screwed. The last time she’d encountered the creatures, she’d totally frozen up and almost become arachnid chow. Who knows what would happen today, even if Trent brought in fake acromantulas.

Claudine had been about to mention the fact that acromantulas ripped people apart but one of the Flamsteed boys beat her to it. What other answer could she volunteer? Um… “They can be merciless,’’ she volunteered dully. “They won’t care about how much you plead of them to leave you alone.”

...

.....

"Yes." Yet another sobering reminder, this one provided by the Slytherin. "So I'd hate to see any of your classmates attempting such strategy as the lesson progresses." A not so subtle warning to any who thought crying loud enough might end the activity.

Certainly not if they were hungry. She’d surely be dinner but hopefully she’d be one of their last choices cause she’d be the disappointing meal chicken wing in the basket of food. Maybe that could be her survival technique?

Acromantulas were social creatures but scary. Though that being said, if raised by a creature or a human, it’d be possible to earn their respect like what Hagrid had done. It’d be a technique that would take a while but one that perhaps would prove invaluable over time. However, that point was moot when they were discussing casually running across an Acromantula.

I wouldn’t want to run into them cause their pincers’ venom is highly toxic.

"That it is, Nam. It's among the most deadly venom in the world." Not the sort you wanted coursing through you, not the sort you wanted anywhere near you. "Useful in certain potions, less useful inside your veins."

It was just a fact. “...are we going to meet acromantulas today, professor?” And there was only one right answer to this. And the right answer was ‘no.’ It didn’t matter that Trent wasn’t the one who abandoned her in the first forest of acromantulas. The other guy looked exactly the same!!!

He wasn't going to argue the logic of the scenario with the Ravenclaw. It didn't matter the reason for being in the forest, the focus was on strategy and defense. That she chose to nitpick and focus on the smaller details spoke volumes and he didn't want to get into it when he had an entire class to run. Instead, Malachi responded to her question.

"There won't be any real acromantulas." Suffice it to say, the Headmaster didn't trust them to not die and with the Board of Governors making a visit soon, it would be a truly terrible time for something like that to happen.

So the young Slytherin shuffled back slightly to hide just the slightest little bit behind her brother. Not completely since she didn't want to appear like she was a baby. She was just slightly scared at the prospect of facing off a giant eight-legged, furry, poisonous spider that had liking for human flesh and could talk. And everyone else's answers to the question did not make her feel any better about it.

And Ash brought up a good point about how they were never alone. They were always in colonies. "They eat their own kind once they die, regardless of their stance in their colony, and wouldn't hesitate to eat one of us alive," Maya volunteered. Which only added to how terrifying they could be - humans mourned the death of their leaders and those who they grew up with. There were creatures who did the same. But not having any attachments emotionally like that? Acromantulas were basically psychopaths.

"They certainly do and definitely wouldn't." Malachi didn't want any of his students thinking an acromantula might hesitate so it was good the Slytherin had brought it up. Much like he'd told another student, begging and crying wouldn't work. They wouldn't buy themselves time, they would only waste what little they had.

If they'd eat close ties, they wouldn't have a single qualm about making one of them dinner.

Hearing that they were going to be learning about acromantulas, the Hufflepuff snapped his head back to the Headmaster. Was he serious? Giant spiders?! He wasn’t afraid of spiders but those? A shiver came over him as he thought about acromantulas coming after them.

”Uhm. My answer was their poison but others had already mentioned that so I’m going to say that they’re also capable of human speech so they can pretend to be hurt somewhere in the forest. Most humans would help someone in danger so they’ll be lured into a trap” that was what he would do if he was a giant spider. ”….We’re not REALLY going to see them, right Professor? They’re just…illusions like the rest of this room …right?”

Not that he was nervous. HA HA he was

A lot of them, it seemed, really thought he was going to unleash real life acromantulas on them. Whether they felt he had enough confidence in their abilities, or that they considered him negligent, he didn't know but it was certainly not on the agenda for the day.

"Only an illusion." Said loud enough for everyone to hear. The Headmaster didn't want to have to deal with a bunch of screaming children with genuine fears of death. "Nothing to really worry about. But, you've raised a good point. Being able to speak, it wouldn't be tremendously difficult for one to lure you into it's lair." Again, constant vigilance children.

She supposed that it was better to face them in a class situation, to be prepared and hopefully never have to encounter one in real life.

When the second question was asked, Jordyn raised her hand. ”There are spells that you can use to fight off acromantulas…….but since they tend to travel in large packs, it’s pretty unlikely that you can get them all before they get you. That would make them super dangerous in my book.” All the more reason not to travel alone in the forest, or any other dangerous location for that matter.

"Right you are. There does happen to be a spell to repel these creatures and we'll be touching on that in another moment. Unfortunately, as you've stated, there are often so many of them that you'll have to have back up of you're own if you want to have a prayer at escape."

Hopefully that was sinking in to those gathered. He didn't want any of them slipping into the forest thinking they could handle whatever came at them. It was...definitely not the case and his days of being a forest hero were at a near end.

Not only did she read about it but she lived it, learned about it all up close. So why was she standing so close to Tadhg she probably looked like a frightened little child? Well how could she not, when this place had the word 'Forbidden' already in its name.

Yes, that made her want to explore and know all that she could about the forest but is also made her know better than to do what she wanted to do. She had heard the stories. Knew of all the horrors that happened in there.. erm in here? Whatever. Lia stepped closer to Tadhg as the question about what to do in an unknown forest came up. Obviously she could've answered, listed every single thing her peers had and likely than some but they were already moving on.

Acromantula.

That's all she heard. Immediately she found herself slowly glancing around for any sight of them. For sight of anything really. As interested as she was about any and all creatures even one that towered over her with eight long legs, poisonous pincers and a hunger for humans, she wasn't in a rush to go off finding one. Slowly she raised her hand. "The female can lay up to a hundred eggs at a time.. each being about the size of a beach ball." That's a ton of really large babies!

"Their reproduction does make them problematic, yes." Wasn't bad enough they could reproduce at all. They reproduced with A LOT of offspring in one sitting and that was a whole lot more man eating spiders than the world every needed. Not a thought he wanted to dwell on...at all.

I'd use a map if the forest has one to not get lost amongst the trees and paths. Also casting Protego for instance is good if you want to protect yourself against dangerous creatures that inhabit the forest. I'd have my wand near by." Especially if she went into a forest like the forbidden forest alone.

No! Why did they have to look at spiders? Shuddering, but trying to hide her fear of them Bella raised her hand to answer the next question. "I think the acromantulas are XXXXX rated because they unlike few other creatures are so cannibalistic. They have no qualms about eating their own dead or human flesh." She could have added about the human speech, hunting in packs of thousands and highly toxic venom, but Headmaster Trent had said to just name one quality so she had fulfilled the question. Seeing Apollo nearby Bella quietly moved over to stand near him. If they were going to face acromantulas she wanted to be with her BFF for the activity.

"yes, they are rather opportunistic eaters. Having no qualms about what they eat opens up their dinner menu a lot wider than it has any right to be." There was no distracting them, no trying to convince them you wouldn't make a good meal.

As if he needed more reasons to avoid them.

Yet she stood up straighter as the Headsman continued on speaking, a definite gleam of excitement in darkly-lined eyes. Acromantulas were xxxxx-lethal, and (probably as a result of their wizard-killing nature) their venom went for over 100 galleons a pint.

"Acromantulas live in huge, relatively sophisticated colonies with an established hierarchy. They're organized." And wicked smart, poisonous, angry. Taller than her, most likely. She looked around the not-room as if expecting one to pop out.

"An important word you've just mentioned, Tilly. Not only are they capable of speech and intelligence but they can also coordinate their attacks. When you think you're doing the hunting, you could become the hunted." Not a position he would recommend any of them to be in. "Just as well, you could think you were making your way through the forest safely without every realising you've won their attention." Yet another reason why constant vigilance was so crucial.

She had read about the spider-like thing before and ran through her brain to pick a fitting answer. It seemed that every answer she landed on was already pointed out (i.e. pincers, the colony and organization of the spider, etc.) so she decided just to agree with a classmate. “I agree with Eden. The way they are so organized is very scary because it shows how smart they really are. And on top of that the way they are like three times the size of us doesn’t make them any less scary. It’s like they’re a very strategic giant who is also poisonous… ”

A little chill ran down her spine. She was definitely more scared of encountering one now that she remembered all the facts about the Acromantulas. Was it too late to join Nem and get kicked out? Wait, no. She was way braver (er, more brave?) than that.

"Strategic poisonous giant is right." A terrible combination he didn't want to deal with--especially given their...arachnid nature, but it was in the curriculum and the students would need to get it covered so here he was. Atlas had a whole lot to say that V wasn't familiar with, and his description made her...swallow. Ugh. Would they have to meet one of these giant spiders? Oh, she would positively scream!

She didn't even notice Daniel Yoon's slightly tremble to his voice. She was too busy inwardly FREAKING OUT. "Um......I think they're scary because spiderwebs humansized are scary. "You know what? You're absolutely right. Small webs are a nuisance enough. Ones large enough you've got no hope of getting out of? Best left alone, best kept far away from." That those creatures could MAKE such large structures and hold you captive until they could devour you made them truly terrifying.

Kinsay had missed it. Fortunately.

What she didn't miss, however, was the tone with which the Headmaster answered her questions. It made her feel really silly. And super embarrassed. And all sorts of small. She always felt small around Headmaster Trent. But especially when he spoke to her like this.

So she had even less desire to answer the second question. But she also didn't want to get into trouble and she also, also didn't want to be spoken to in that condescending way again. So. Um. Kinsay James was once again at a crossroads. Timidly, she half-raised her hand, almost hoping that their Headmaster would miss it and skip her turn. "They almost ate my best friend one time." That was enough reason for Kins to AVOID at all costs. It was when they were really little, but sometimes Kins still had nightmares about Emm getting snatched up by giant spiders. Also. She had another question. It was a relevant one though, if that helped. "Do kids taste better to them than adults?" Because if they did, then that was another reason to avoid them. Kins didn't want to end up being spider dinner.

Was it odd that the reason he found her prior statement odd was because he couldn't imagine Thing 1 without Thing 2? If Cambridge had really been eaten, would that have left James with more thinking ability? The man obviously didn't wish either girl harm, it just happened to pop into his head when she spoke.

Another think to pop into his head? Acromantula appetites. "I'm actually not sure." He admitted. "Never had the chance to ask." Malachi wasn't trying to be in the same room as common house spiders. Acromantulas were clearly nowhere in his ball park.

She raised her hand. "I think their size is one of the things that makes them so dangerous. Even small venomous creatures can be deadly, but when it's something bigger than you that can overpower you, that makes it even scarier."

"Very good, yes. If the venom wasn't bad enough, they have the ability to overpower you, hold you down and make sure you've got a good dose of it." Size mattered. "As well, you'll need to take their size into account when casting on them."

In the dim light, with so many other students answering, Malachi actually missed the silence of this particular Gryffindor. It was for the best, of course. The man didn't like to feel like he was talking to himself and liked to have his questions answered. Call it the setting, or maybe his own unease about the lesson, but he glossed right over her.

What made them most dangerous, though? Margaret raised a tentative hand. "Well, they have eight legs and two pincers, so they could probably grab one person and still chase down another since their legs are free. So they can hunt more people more quickly, which isn't good," she said.

Shudder.

The Headmaster absolutely hated how right Turov was and it likely showed in the small grimace--or would have were the lighting any better. "You're right about that so I don't recommend everyone rushing at once." Between the creature's intelligence and its many appendages, they would need strategy.

That was much better. Properly attired in school robes and looking sharp as the others. Malachi gave the boy the briefest glances over to be sure everything was in order.

Satisfied, he listened to his response. Yet another for the venom. "Indeed. Large creatures with venom are not the sort you want to find yourself facing." For obvious reason.

"Yes, exactly that. They cannot be reasoned with." This was perhaps the second time he'd said this and he sincerely hoped the students were listening. It was...of some importance and would only serve to see them exiting the class in better standing.

"Just a quick recap." A recap specifically because they would need this information. "Acromantulas are giant, talking, intelligent, man-eating spiders. There's a colony in the real Forbidden Forest--one of MANY reasons why it's forbidden. Now as was mentioned, there are many things that make them dangerous. They've got venom, size, intelligence--they cannot be reasoned with unless they already have allegiance to you, bred over a long span of many years." Did he need to say that part again? He probably should but felt by now it was ingrained.

"They are organised and strategic so it would certainly help if you were, too. That said, as was also mentioned, there is a spell used to repel acromantulas and other large spiders. The incantation is "Arania Exumai". The wand movement..." He paused to demonstrate. If they looked carefully, they would see it sort of resembled a spider.

"I don't think I need to tell you that you'll be facing some acromantulas today." That likely went without saying. "For those of you present for that...rather infamous kelpie lesson, consider this your moment of redemption. Here is a map that contains information on three sets of acromantula lairs. you'll break into three teams. No matter the path you take through the forest, you'll end up going by a lair. Before any of you move from this spot, I need you to come up with sensible strategy for how you plan to survive that." It was a must.

"That's our first goal. Think it through carefully, take the time to practice the spell if you need to--practice your aim if you have to. Remember everything we've said about these spiders, and no, turning and exiting is not an option." For those who may have been wondering. "Let's get on it.

OOC: Time for the mini activity!! Before we move to the big bad spiders, Malachi wants to know the students won't be going in blind and that they'll actually put thought into it. You'll have 72 hrs for this activity (give or take). In that time, please join a group and get a strategy going. Please label your post with your group (spindly path, open clearing, riverside) for ease and let's try to keep the groups even. I will try to make a list of who's in what group but it may not be up to the second so still give a little glance around. If you'd like, your group can come up with a graphic for their strategy map but this isn't necessary, just clear thinking that hopefully won't get anyone hurt

Claudine met Heath’s gaze nervously. Though never one to back down from a challenge, given her experience of almost being ripped apart by an actual acromantula, please excuse her if she was terrified for whatever was to come next. The stronger side of her though, was determined that she face her fear even if she did not get over it at the end of the lesson. Then Claudine was scanning the ‘Forest’ again, hoping that no spider would come jumping out at her. All the while, she was of course, doing her best to focus on Trent’s words.

Arania Exumai. Yes. Immediately after her little adventure years ago, the Slytherin had made it her goal to master this spell. During her third year, she met that goal. A lair?! Merlin. This was quite the activity Trent had put together.

Claudine raised her hand. “Creating a distraction. Acromantulas would eat humans or even their own dead. An imitation of one of those could be put together to get the spiders’ attention. Once that’s done, the group takes them on.” That was her plan. The element of surprise. She looked around randomly at those students nearby. If anyone wanted to add anything or provided a different idea, now would be a great time.

Acromantulas? That was the Forbidden Forest surprise? Well this was going to be interesting. Jordyn was not particularly happy that they were going to tackle the humongous spiders, but figured that the professor wouldn’t let any harm come to them. At least that was what she hoped.

Jordyn listened as her classmate, (Claudine)gave her idea of a plan. Distraction, yes, that sounded good. She raised her hand to add her thoughts. “I think that distracting the acromantulas is a good idea, but they are smart, so we have to be even smarter. They wont be easily fooled.”

Having said that, she decided to join the older girl because she sounded like she had good ideas. Besides, she was older and older meant more experienced. She approached the Slytherin and made her pitch. Hi, I’m Jordyn. I like the way you think. Can I be in your group?”

In the meantime, she figured that practicing the spell would be a good idea. So, Jordyn proceeded to repeat “Arania Exumai” several times, followed by the wand movement. You could never be too prepared.

Default riverside?
Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Hmmm, which path to choose? What was the best place to be abandoned to get eaten by spiders? The open clearing probably meant she'd be surrounded. The path probably meant she'd be flanked OR surrounded. The riverside... she'd probably be attacked from there too, but it seemed to safest to her. Plus she liked water. She picked the riverside.

Now for preparation time. Ash didn't see any people in her group yet, so she took a deep breath and headed over to Trent. To be honest, she'd rather be near the acromantulas than him. Surely it showed. "Sir?" She only called people that when she was afraid of them. "I have some questions to prepare for this. Can acromantulas swim? Also, are their eyes more vulnerable than the rest of them? Also... are you planning on facing any fake acromantulas yourself?" He said to prepare, and the first step was to read up on the creatures and make sure you trusted who you were with. So he couldn't get upset that she had questions- she had no reason to trust him, and she wasn't that knowledgeable about acromantulas. That meant she couldn't be prepared. And she wasn't going to fight 'fake' acromantulas without being prepared. Constant vigilance, or whatever.

He continued to make mental note of all the answers his peers were offering regarding reasons to fear the Acromantula, noticing his sister step a little closer towards him as the conversation progressed. He had relaxed when the Headmaster told Remy they would not be meeting a real acromantula but... that was also still the lesson for today. He wondered what that meant for whatever they were facing was going to ACTUALLY be, he had no idea but he was curious and made note to ask the Professor later.

For now, it was time to group and create a plan for how to face an acromantula.

Turning towards his sister, Maya first, "Do you want to go the same path?" As had been proven last year, Lisa had a lot of people who cared and wanted to keep her safe. And while Evan was sure that was true for Maya too, he also wanted her to be comfortable so if going with him would accomplish that goal - he was all for it. Spotting a first year who also looked lost, Max, while the Ravenclaw had been unimpressed with the sass shown towards Ollie, he still offered him a smile as well. "Want to go with us?" Or just him in the chance his sister wanted to try her own group - which he would also hold no ill will about.

Alright. So plan. "As we covered, acromantulas are really smart so there's no way we could talk our way out of it with one," a shame really, "but maybe if we could lure one of the smaller ones and take it out that way? And then maybe use it to distract the others long enough to get by?" He usually believed the best offense was the best defense and yet... if they already knew they were GOING to encounter one, perhaps it was best to be the offense and not be taken unaware.

V nodded. For some reason, she wasn't zoning out. She wasn't like, completely ignoring the class or the lecture or anything Trent was saying. It all made SENSE. And she didn't feel LOST. Maybe it was because she was a big bad SECOND YEAR now. When they had to separate into groups, she found herself gesturing for Ollie to follow her, but really if Ollie wanted to switch - whatever.

Where would Lisa and Remy go? And Daniel?

"Ash!" she said as she approached the older girl. "I say we try to SET THEM ON FIRE. They can't survive fire. And the fire spell is easy enough...right?" she looked at Trent for his approval, because suuuuurely this was a FOOLPROOF PLAN!

Okay, planning a strategy was a good idea. Especially if they wanted this to go better than the kelpie lesson. Heh. Ivy was pretty sure she hadn't done anything too off-the-rails in that lesson. She'd only been a first year at the time, so...whoa. That...felt like such a long time ago all of a sudden. She was a fifth year now. To think of all the things that had happened between then and now, how much had changed...

Um, well, this wasn't the time to dwell on all that. Even if the forest and the Acromantulas were an illusion, she still needed to be present and focused. So she needed a group to join.

The riverside path seemed like a good one, so she walked over to join Ash and V. Ash had some good questions, and V...well, fire could be a good option as well. "Depending on how deep the river is and how strong the current is, we could knock some of them into the water the Arania Exumai spell and let them get washed away," she suggested. Even better if they couldn't swim. They didn't really look like they were built for swimming, but if the water level was really shallow then it probably wouldn't matter. There were probably other ways they could use the river to their advantage in that case.

Trent with the mic drop. This is just going to show that she should not have signed up for this course this term. Seriously what good is it doin her, aside from stressing her out. Merlin. Hearing they were in teams that was good. She could kind of stand out yet not die first. She'd leave that to one of the other students. hehehe.

Glancing at the groups forming she for sure did not want to be in the open clearing group, hello open clearing. Looking at the group forming by the riverside she wasn't so sure that was a good option either. Well guess that only leaves spindly path. "Care if I join you Claudine and Jordyn" Because she really did not want to join the open field. But that should be implied right? "Sounds like you have a good plan going too. I think diversion is smart."

Eden briefly considered her three options for invading acromantula lairs.

The riverside path seemed like an easy choice - they'd have the advantage of water. The choice was made even easier once she heard Ash come through with a trusty Ravenclaw game of 20 questions. God, she loved her house. Skepticism included.

Except. WAIT. Now she had questions to add too, and she slipped next to Ash to bombard Professor Headmaster with her own curiosity. "Wait, sir, are the acromantulas FAKE?"

It was obvious that this prospect disappointed Eden. Fake acromantulas wouldn't have real venom!

And now there was that loud little Slytherin joining their cohort. And Ivy! Fire was always fun, especially if the spiders could swim. Eden wasn't interested in blowing up REAL acromantulas, however. The waste of precious resources would give her nightmares. "Does accio work on spider brains?" And spider pincers..."Or if they're fake, we could just do what she says and fire-bomb the nest. Or we could make the ground sticky, if anyone knows how to do that."

She NEEDED to know if they were fake. Her approach depended on it.

Phoebe bopped along to the smallest group and eyed their way forward. It actually seemed safest, so that was pretty much certain death, right? It was always the safest path that was the most deadly. Maybe she should pick a different path... although now that she knew these little babies were gonna die, she needed to stick with them to be the tough seventh year that got them out alive.

"Hey! I heard your plan. Or, like, I heard the rough draft of the plan. Should we really engage with a giant spider on purpose? Even if it's a small one? But your idea of a distraction is totally boss. What about a very small fire? Or an explosion? OR BUBBLES! I think spiders would be very distracted by bubbles. Or what if we transfigured something into prey? Bunnies! Bushes into bunnies!"

Lisa cast her gaze to her siblings who had grouped together and considered joining them but ultimately she saw V and Ash head down the same path so she opted to go with them. “Hey! Wait up!” she called over to the Riverside group which now consisted of V, Ash, Ivy, and Eden. “Can I join?” She waited a moment to get caught up on their ideas.

Ash had some good questions. If they could swim, then that would be something to watch for…. If they were real, well…..

Surely Headmaster Trent wouldn’t send real Acromantulas after them right?

Well if they are alive and we take one out… dibs on the venom.” She’d have to share that with Serena. She knew her friend would LOVE it because she loved potions. “I think we should scare them or make them SUPER mad with fire so much so that the only place they can run is the river and then we use that spell that Ivy mentioned.

Her eyes widened as her mind raced, excited by all the ideas. Her imagination was running wild now. “We could make the path slippery so they have no traction and if they can’t swim then badabing badadoom! Bye bye!

Before anyone else could respond, one of Eden's favorite first years from last term joined their group. Favorite second year, now. The two hadn't interacted much, but the redhead liked her none the less.

Her joining their group made Eden smile...until the child opened her mouth.

Nope. "Sorry, Lisa, but the venom is spoken for." By her. Sorry group. Eden was prepared to put her life on the line for that stuff. "Maybe we can share." Ha. Ha. Ha. HA. Remain calm, Eden. Weren't the Nams RICH? It was hard to keep track of whose family had money at Hogwarts - Eden wasn't great at distinguishing that kind of thing among wizards yet. They could buy their own venom if they were, though. That was the point. Eye twitch.

A strategy. Yes, that made sense. At least they would be well prepared before facing a giant spider, even if a tiny part of her was still really scared. She watched people grouping up so she joined the closest one because Evan was a familiar face and Pheobe was there too - having an older student around is always better, right? She noticed the younger girl, wondering if she was Evan's sister because they looked really similar.

"But, what if the smaller ones are super dangerous too?" She asked, turning to look at Evan. Phoebe had a point, though. Bubbles could be a good distraction, it was better than engaging with an acromantula at least.

Ollie originally started to follow V’s gesture to join her and Ash in heading to the riverside. Then something pulled her in the other direction. Something about being in a group with two of the smartest people she knew, Evan and Maya, just made sense to her. Well, Max would be in that group to, but Ollie was sure she could look over it for now, well for a good grade. She walked over just in time to hear a question regarding the smaller spiders. “Hey! Do you mind if I join?”She smiled at the people she was familiar with. She turned to the girl who had just asked about the smaller acromantulas. “Of course they’re super dangerous. I think it would make sense to have designated people dealing with them, while others deal with the rest.”

It wasn't until he chose a path that it occurred to Evan that he had chosen probably the most vulnerable path. Riverside could offer protection with the water, maybe, assuming that would do anything with the acromantulas. The winding path would probably have more tree coverage that at least they could attempt to hide, but what would that do too? But even if the others had downfalls, at least they had something that could be used for benefit. Instead of an open clearing.

Where one could be a sitting duck.

This Ravenclaw was not at all feeling very smart. And when an older student, a seventh year and Kinsay's sister at that, offered to join their group he gave an actual smile in relief at the girl. "Very rough draft." Because at that point he was just hoping to get the conversation going. And while no, he very much did not want to deal with a giant man eating spider, there appeared to be no way out of that. "Fire sounds promising." Bubbles... did not. And would they want bunnies? When the human children would be large and much heartier of a meal? but mention of transfiguration did give him somewhat of an idea. "Isn't the basilisk the thing an acromantula fears the most? What about other snakes? There's Serpensortia or maybe there's something else we could use to transfigure something to look like a basilisk?"

Make the thing they feared more fearful of them.

Looking over at Val when she joined their group too, he offered a small smile and a nod because... yes, all of them were dangerous. "the smaller ones would be too. All of them are." And thinking more clearly about it, the smaller might be even MORE so since poison secreted when they were excited and babies were usually more excitable. And then Ollie approached too and Evan smiled at her as well. "Of course you can join."

Kayne was extremely thankful that this was a spell that he at least knew of. He's never actually used it, or practiced it really, but he still read about it once. However, since he was never really one to just think with a narrow mind, he allowed it to open to other possibilities of tactics to beat these spiders, whether they're fake or not.

Looking around, his eyes looked towards Ash's direction and the small group that has now formed up with her. Making his way over there, Kayne listened carefully and closely as each person in the group spoke up, contributing to the overall idea of utilizing the river in their favor instead of the spiders. Chiming in, the Mordrake boy calmly noted "I do exceedingly well in Charms, more specifically defensive charms." He then proceeded to squat on the ground, and started to draw upon the dirt. "We can position ourselves, here." And he made an x right on the bank of the river, in front of the lair. "Me and anyone else who thinks they are skilled enough to do so, can team up to cast Protego Maxima, thus." His finger then proceeded to form a circle around the previously marked x. "Preventing us from getting in any serious damage. The only thing we would have to then worry about, is actually facing the spiders."

What Kayne didn't add, to make sure to not demoralize anyone after what was just spoken, defeating them might not be the easiest task. But who knows? Only time will tell now.

Acromantulas. Gracelyn wasn’t afraid of them, not by the loosest definition, but anything that couldn’t be reasoned with wasn’t exactly her cup of tea. Stars and wandlore were much more comfortable for her, subject-wise. The Hufflepuff wasn’t one to back down, though, either. Maybe it was osmosis from all the Lions she counted as her friends. Including Charlie. That glance hadn’t gone past unseen, and she sympathized with the other girl.

Which also likely explained why she had followed her to the small group contemplating the spindly path. Just in case anyone passed out. Since they’d been warned they couldn’t skive off from the lesson at this point, not that she had planned on trying to leave. She wouldn’t learn defensive skills if she skipped the subject, after all, and there was something to be said about practical applications being better for learning than purely theoretical? Maybe. So far Headmaster Trent hadn’t hurt anyone too badly in their lessons, not counting when he wasn’t himself, and the stress of the board visit probably wasn’t helping.

“What kind of diversion do we think would work best?,” she mused, stopping alongside the other girls. Plus, odds were they’d need to utilize Arania Exumai in order to get through the activity as well. Spells that were explicitly mentioned rarely were entirely offhand.
