Default DADA Lesson 1 - Hold It Right There

The first Defense lesson of the term takes place in classroom A1. If you've hit the music hall, you've gone too far.

Today, the classroom looks well put together--as most everything at Beauxbatons seems to be. Tidy walls, organized work sections, a neat pile of books on the Headmaster's desk. The points of interest today are the box shaped objects placed on each set of desks. The desks themselves are pushed together, housing 4 seats per group and each desk has its own box, covered by a magnificent length of light blue satin cloth...very obviously borrowed.

On the board, there is a sign asking you not to touch the boxes or the satin sheets. Kindly obey said instructions and we can begin the lesson amicably.

The wide windows to the left of the classroom allow the warm mid morning sun into the room. If you haven't already somehow managed to wake up in all this time, the bright light from the outside world should do the trick.

Headmaster Trent stands by his own desk, getting in some last minute reading and prep. Occasionally, he makes a scribble or two in the book he holds but he's present enough to return greetings and keep an eye out to ensure that one rule on the board is adhered to.

OOC: Welcome to the first DADA lesson of the term!! Don't forget to read the classroom rules before posting. I'll have the first question up in 24-28 hours

The lesson hasn't started yet

Alexandre was already feeling a bit jumbled. He kept saying things in English in the middle of a French sentence, and started sentences in French when he was talking to others who exclusively spoke English. Hogwarts was much easier when he never had to worry about this language thing. Though it had given him a chance to keep up with his French, which was probably a good thing. He had been nearly fluent before, but was probably letting it slip while at Hogwarts to be honest. With Noah's help, and all the practice at home over the summer he was feeling great about it. There was just the aforementioned problem of feeling a bit jumbled sometimes.

But this was Defense Against the Dark Arts. So he could think just English for the duration of the class. He found the place just fine, mostly because he'd sort of just followed the crowd. Once inside he said a chipper "Hello Headmaster," and looked around for where to sit. First he saw a group of first years (why did it seem like there were just so MANY of them??) and then a group of older kids. Finally, somewhere in the middle, his gaze landed on Lucas. Oh hi Lucas! He started heading that way.

"Hi Lucas! Can I sit with you?" He was already starting to sit in a chair even as he said it. But it was polite to ASK, right? There was also a smaller girl getting there right before him. Alexandre smiled at her. "Hi! I'm Alexandre!" And there was a THING on the table. A thing that they weren't supposed to touch. A thing that he really wanted to touch. But he wouldn't. Because he was good at following directions. But he wanted to.

Why didn't the classrooms go in order? A1 should mean that it was the first classroom in the hallway...so why did Avalon find herself all the way down the corridor at the music hall? Thankfully, she had left plenty of time in case she got lost on her way to Defense Against the Dark Arts. But she was not about to ask one of the Beauxbatons students how to get to A1. The handful of them that she had seen so far had only sneered in her direction, obviously irritated that Hogwarts students were infiltrating their school. In a way, she couldn't blame them. She would feel a little miffed if the entire Durmstrang congregation were to make themselves right at home at Hogwarts. But they could at least pretend to be polite.

Finally finding the classroom she was looking for, Avalon entered, giving Headmaster Trent a courteous nod and smile. "Good morning, Headmaster," she said, glancing down at her wristwatch. Good, it was still morning after all. It felt much later, though, as Avalon had been up since before dawn. She usually preferred to sleep in, but the change in environment was messing with her sleeping schedule. Avalon glanced around the room, silently appreciating the tidiness of it. She chose an empty seat next to a boy that she hadn't met before (Alex), and gave him a friendly smile. "Hi! Mind if I sit here?" Well, even if he did mind, it was too late. She had already slung her bag over the chair and put her textbook down. And what could possibly be in that box on the table? Headmaster Trent always had interesting lessons. Avalon wondered what they might be learning about today.

Just the matter of finding lessons was proving to be infinitely harder than most everything else here at Beauxbatons. Carys knew where everything was at Hogwarts including the Quidditch pitch which she still hadn’t found here. Luckily it was still early, so she was hoping that meant it was more understandable if they got a bit lost right now. Not that it didn’t help that a lot of the Beauxbatons students didn’t seem very willing to help them. Or prove that they understood more than just French. She’d been tempted a few times to just say something in Welsh just to prove a point to them.

Finding the classroom for the DADA lesson wasn’t as hard as it might have been, though, considering she’d mostly had to just follow the others from the Herbology lesson that had finished before this lesson. It had given her time to quickly make sure she wasn’t too disheveled from Herbology, too, while she’d walked. And to verify she had the appropriate textbook in her bag, which was more of a cursory check than anything as she’d known she’d put it in there before she’d headed for breakfast.

The classroom itself didn’t look anything like the usual DADA classroom, either, although the smile she had given the headmaster was the same one she usually gave. “Good morning, Headmaster Trent,” she added, glancing around at the already occupied tables. Her sister wasn’t there yet, it seemed, nor a lot of her housemates, and she didn’t particularly want to claim a table all for herself so ultimately she’d headed over toward the grouping currently occupied by her cousin.

“Do you mind if I join you, Cole?,” she asked, more out of general politeness than actually feeling she needed permission before sitting down in one of the empty seats. She guessed it hadn’t exactly mattered, anyway. Seats would probably be filled soon enough.

Of course, the Beauxbatons students hadn't been of any help to her either. And the communication, or lack thereof, had only been exacerbated by her Cuban accent which she wasn't sure they really couldn't understand or were just pretending. She'd even asked in their own language (thank you, Papa Carter) to no avail. Luckily, she'd eventually found the right classroom by following a Hogwartian, one of those that hadn't gone as far as the music room.

"Hello, Headmaster Trent," Dalia greeted as she entered the classroom and took a seat at random, not even noticing the grouping of the desks.

Too much new things! So.it was a relief when Austin spotted the head master as he walked in.
"Morning head master," he said.
He took a seat in a desk, towards the front so his quiet voice would be heard and looked around. He saw thst everything was well put together and organized. .

Analiese thought it would be easy to find A1 as it sounded like it would be one of the first classes in the castle.

Wrong.

Beauxbatons had everything in order except the classrooms. For some weird reason, it was on the second floor and not the first. At first, she had somehow landed in front of the music hall. Then, the portrait gallery. And finally, the actual classroom. She simply greeted the Headmaster as she walked in. "Good morning, sir." She walked over to the table housing Avalon and a boy she didn't know. "Hi Avalon.", she plainly said as she sat down next to her. Out of her politeness, she greeted the boy with a 'hello'.

It wasn't his first choice for classroom but with the French Defense Professor currently running his own lesson, there was nothing to do but pick another. Mind you, this wasn't a BAD classroom, just...the other would have been perfect.

This one, he did what he could with without changing too much. Too much of course being a subjective measure. For now, perfectly normal classroom and it would remain that way while the door remained open.

Grey eyes glanced up from his book toward the door. Even before he could see the students, he could hear the footsteps coming down the corridor. Right on time. Naturally, there was one in particular he was looking out for.

He made his way through the fancy castle to the classroom, his bag slumped sideways on his shoulder, his hair was normally blonde today but his eyes kept changing from blue to silver. He gave up hope on having them stable. Girls seem to like that he can change their colours anyway.

"Morning!" Ilya beamed at the headmaster without stopping but conveniently walking closely to his desk (trying to see what the man was reading perhaps), and onwards towards one of the set desks with the interesting boxes. What were they? Ilya placed his bag on the floor by his chair and leaned forward on his elbows to take a closer look at the box. WithOUT touching. yeh, yeh.

Ah and there was the first of them. Malachi lowered his book, watching the boy make a beeline for the desk and the covered box atop it. The Headmaster had hoped he wouldn't have to say anything and was pleasantly surprised to see the young boy knew how to look with his eyes rather than his hands.

You'd never believe how long it took some kids to learn that lesson.

"Good morning.......Ravenclaw." Names on the first day of school were unlikely among the first years. The others, he'd already had history with, but the little ones...well....they just got there. It would take him atleast a month. Give or take how obnoxious they turned out to be.

And another of the little people. One who, perhaps predictably, also made a beeline for the desk and the box. It seemed quite natural to him for her to take a seat next to...Ravenclaw over there (them both being first years and new and all). The man gave her a nod in return greeting. "Morning." Casually removing the need to say her name.

As of the start of this class, he didn't know it.

Freyr pulled up his copy of The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection by Quentin Trimble.

After he threw a careful glance at the box next to the desk group, Freyr said "Hi, I am Freyr" to the boy and extended his hand.

This was quickly becoming a trend. Was he surprised it was the bright eyed and bushy tailed ones who were the earliest for class? Hardly. First day of school, the first years tended to be....for lack of a better word....eager. Endearing for a certainty, but also dangerous if not properly contained. This one, thankfully, seemed well contained.

"Morning."

"Good morning!" she chirped, plopping a big fat juicy red apple on top of his stack of books. Surely wizards had this tradition too, no? She'd nicked the apple from the LOVELY, HEALTHY breakfast they were still being served and thought the Headmaster might need it for their first day. Apples had caffeine, after all, and most adults appreciated a caffeine boost when working with Bernadette.

Bernie continued smiling and skipping as she made her way to the desk BEHIND Ilya, who received a bright, "HELLO," whispered loudly at him. Now she had a box all to herself.... What's in the box? She was VERY tempted to open this present.

Speaking of bright eyed, bushy tailed and eager...

Malachi blinked at this one as she literally skipped into the classroom dripping sunshine and rainbows all over the floor and anything she touched. The Headmaster raised a brow at her as she approached, openly concerned about the apple in her hand when the rules clearly stated no food in the classroom. Were apples on the list? Didn't matter, he'd said the list was non-exhaustive.

Trent lowered his book further when she plopped it atop his books. Right...... Very casually, Malachi moved the apple from atop his books to its own spot atop his desk. "Thank you....Gryffindor." Don't worry, he'd get the names soon enough. More importantly. "How did you manage to get hold of any sugar with the breakfast we had?" Serious question. She was on something. He wouldn't believe otherwise.

Even her auntie Lou at the Leaky Cauldron didn't really use magic much. But she, and her grandparents, had all refused to allow her to stay at home and be muggle schooled. So, here she was. In France. About to learn Defence Against the Dark Arts.

She took in the sights of the classroom, heading in. "Hello Prof-uh... H-Headmaster Trent." She wasn't entirely sure what she should call him. He was the Headmaster of Hogwarts, but he was also the Professor of DADA. "What do you like being called?" she asked in a rather quiet voice.

The first precious bean of the morning. Every year, there was a good enough chance of running into at least one of them. Last term it was Keller. This term was...this one here with a name that he would obviously learn at some point.

Yes.

There was the faintest remnants of a smile tugging at his lips. The question wasn't at all strange. At least one kid asked each year. He'd have been more concerned if the question never came up at all. "Inside the classroom, either is fine. Outside, "Headmaster" will do." Kept things simple. Inside here, he'd be the only Professor. Outside, it was likely there would be more at any given time making the distinction more necessary.

Everyone was given a light nod and smile in greeting. "Good morning, Headmaster Trent." Her voice was loud enough to be heard but not enough so to be distracting as he had seen he was writing something down when she entered the room.

Selecting a seat at a group of tables near the center of the room she removed the materials needed for the lesson, laying each one down nicely on the desk. Placing her bag beneath her chair she than sat down, her eyes falling upon the light blue satin covered box.

"Morning, Prichard." Finally a name he knew. It'd been one first year after the other and as adorable as they tended to be, there were only so many times he'd be able to get away with referring to these kids by their houses. The first month was always the roughest where that was concerned. All the bright, new faces he knew nothing about.

For a moment, the Headmaster watched her set out her materials for the lesson. Very organized that one. Well behaved, too. Nothing like her brother and thank Merlin for that. One had been enough and now he was someone else's headache, wherever he was. This Prichard, he was glad to keep.

Not a bouncer, this one. It was fine, always a mixed bag. "Morning."

Malachi watched her pulled out her sketch book....as opposed to the materials required for the lesson. "It would be more prudent of you to take out your defense materials." Wand, textbooks, parchment, inkwell, y'know, the things she would actually need. "We'll be beginning in a moment. There's time enough for whatever that is later. For now, put it away." Seeing the items on the desk made her wonder even more what they would be up to. Time would tell.

"Morning." Malachi replied. An older new student. There were a few of those each term. The ones who inevitably fell into the same category as the first years when it came to names. First day of school problems. Although, could it really be described as a problem? If you showed up to the first day of lessons with your professor already knowing you name despite it being your very first time, you were likely doing something very right or very wrong. Only the latter was a problem.

But feeling nervous was something he was used to. Especially during DADA lessons. The only difference was that after six years he was getting good at hiding it. The classroom looked ...perfect... as he entered the room. Everything at Beauxbaton looked perfect really. And he liked it. "Good morning, Headmaster Trent" he greeted and curiously looked down at the book he was reading and taking notes in. When he couldn't see what was written, he turned away to find a seat when he spotted Rylee.

"Hey Rosie, did you get permission to bring your kneazle yet?" he asked as he sat down at an empty desk in the group.
The Head Boy himself.

Malachi watched with mild concern as Katharos entered the classroom. He'd gotten lost. It was an easy deduction to make. There was no need to ask if he was alright. Experience had taught him that the boy typically was. Usually, Katharos looked like that when he was at risk of being late and had done something to remedy the situation. Before the morning was up, the man imagined quite a few of them would be lost on the way here.

"Morning, Katharos. Nifty badge you've got there." He trusted he understood the great responsibility that came with it.

Not that she minded per se. This was all very exciting. She wondered how long they'd be staying here. Would they be allowed to return to Hogwarts after the school year? Or maybe Christmas? Or they all stay here? Forever???

All those questions roaming around in her head, it was no wonder really that she'd missed the entrance to the DADA classroom the first time. After turning around at the end of the corridor, however, she quickly noticed the students filing into the room and joined them.

"Good morning, Headmaster!" She said cheerfully. Yes, good morning. Siobhán O'Shea was now also here. She'd arrived.

After a quick look around, Shivvy, to her disappointment, noticed that none of her friends had arrived yet. Were they lost too? Or maybe they'd just STAYED in that music room. Maybe she should have, too? But no, DADA was fun. Usually. Plus, it was important. Her dad had told her so. Repeatedly. Probably more often than she'd paid attention enough to remember.

So, seeing as she was, so far, friendless in this classroom, Siobhán simply dropped into the nearest available seat. By a girl who was also wearing Gryffindor robes. "Hii, who are you?" She asked with a grin, her gaze already drifting away to the items on the table. Why were they hidden from view? Were they dangerous?

What if she poked the cloth with her wand?

Poking the cloth with her wand would likely result in the Headmaster poking her with the one at his side. But she hadn't and there was no need and this wasn't at all a thing.

"Morning, O'Shea. Let's stay out of back alleys this term, yeah?" Because no, he hadn't forgotten the nearly unfortunate mishap in the back alley of Hogsmeade just the term before. A whole village with sweets and games and those kids decided a dark alleyway was the place to be. Merlin's beard, it made no sense.

Of course, there weren't necessarily any dark alleys this year but the warning still stood. As a Gryffindor, he was confident she'd find one somehow.

The Headmaster glanced over at the clock, just trying to keep track of the time. Yes, he knew the lesson would be starting soon, but it helped to know the exact time because yes, new castle or not, that door was closing on the hour. New castle and people were lost, you say? In the end, it wasn't difficult to find, but he'd still needed to wander around for a bit to work out the vague direction he had needed to go to find it. It didn't help that he was still operating on no sleep at all (as was probably clear from the dark circles under his eyes), Herbology not really being the best place to have a quick nap even if he had been able to, so Kaiser wasn't really functioning on all cylinders.

But here he was. Kaiser wondered if it was possible that Headmaster Trent knew yet about his OWL grade in this subject. He had the mist situation to deal with, after all, as well as the move to Beauxbatons, and there was the fact that Kaiser hadn't taken his exams until late in the summer and so had only received his results two days prior. Also, maybe Trent wouldn't care about his grades; Kaiser wouldn't have held it against him at all.

But an E. Exceeds Expectations. Kaiser had been absolutely floored to see he had managed the second highest possible grade in not just Defence Against the Dark Arts, but Potions as well, seeing as the most he ever usually managed were Acceptables. Yes, he had failed five of his other exams, but that wasn't the point. He would never admit it, but part of Kaiser really yearned for some sort of approval, starved of it as he was in the absence of any, you know, parents, and in this situation he kind of wanted it to come from Trent himself. But Kaiser wasn't allowing himself to expect it; Trent was a busy man, hundreds of students, a school to run, disaster at every turn, etcetera, etcetera.

Kaiser also didn't want to be obvious about the whole thing either, didn't want anyone to even suspect that he craved that acknowledgement, especially as it really was extremely un-Kaiser-like. So, when he entered the classroom, he simply greeted Trent with a (very tired sounding), "Morning," and looked for somewhere to sit.

Hmm. Groups. Well, the large majority of students present were a lot younger than he was, though Rylee and Dorian were there already. They were probably hoping for friends to sit with them though, and Kaiser wouldn't deny that he'd have liked to sit with people he was slightly more familiar with too. Nodding at the two in greeting nevertheless, Kaiser went ahead and claimed one of the rapidly declining number of free tables while he still could. Not having any desire to go poking around mysterious objects, especially in this lesson, Kaiser let the box and the sheet well enough alone.

Coming in right behind the latest firstie, young Kaiser. It was the oddest thing. When the results were turned over from the Ministry, his hadn't been on the list. Seeing that had concerned the man more than anything. Had the boy not taken the exams? They were a fair bit important to his future depending on what he ultimately decided to do with his life.

"Morning, Kaiser. Mind stopping by my office later?" Despite it being a question, it didn't entirely sound like one. Rather, it was a set of instructions that simply had a question mark at the end by pure coincidence. He would need to get to the bottom of things. Worst case, they'd have to see about rescheduling or something of the sort.

It would be fine, everything would be fine, all his kids would be fine.

After taking a few many wrong turns and yes ending up in the music hall too, he found the right classroom. It was a relief. If there was one thing he disliked it was not being on time. "Good morning Headmaster Trent!" Cole chirped cheerily as he passed the adult man on his way to a desk. Where to sit was always hard to pick. He saw that Sihoban and Naya we’re seated together in one group and Claudine and Dorian he also spotted as well as some others.

Cole opted eventually to sit down at an empty desk in a so far unoccupied group of four near the front. He wanted to put up a sign that said 'Boys come join me' but thought the headmaster might object strongly to that. Instead he took out his DADA book and flipped it open and started to read about a dark creature to pass the time until class started. He wondered about the content of the boxes and the sheets purposes obviously, who wouldn't, but he kept his fingers to himself.

Oh look, it was barf boy. Er....Vance. Vance....yeah...that's who that one was. After the feast, Trent had gone to check in with Carmine on the boy who'd been sick during the feast. Rotten luck that was, starting the year being known as the boy who threw up on everyone at the table before the food even arrived. Idly, the man wondered how long it would take him to live that one down.

"Morning, Vance. Feeling better today, I hope." The boy certainly sounded better. Hell, he almost sounded like he was on the same thing that one first year was. Pretty sure there.

She made an unspoken promise to not follow anyone after the lesson so they would not be upset with her.

The badger smiled immediately however when she made her way into the classroom for her FIRST lesson in Defense Against the Dark Arts! Her eyes settled on the Headmaster as he waited for everyone's arrival, with a note not to touch the items on their desk. Faye's smile never faltering as she bowed her head politely towards the Headmaster before she spoke, "Good morning Headmaster.." She had no idea he would be teaching these classes!

She took a quick scan around the room looking as the desks were grouped together in fours. Seeing some of them quickly filling up, she made a beeline for the first available sit she could find which happened to be with a really pretty older Slyhtherin girl (Jillian). "Hi there, I'm Faye...Would it alright if I sit with you?" Soon setting her things down on the desk across from her before getting comfortable.

Faye's eyes settled on the box in front of her, quizzically staring at it, NOT touching it at all as instructed. Of course curious to know what was inside, but feeling no temptation to touch it because surely they'd be touching it eventually. It was all about patience until the lesson began.

A bow? Well that was a new one. Another precious little bean, as it were. Two in the space of one lesson. What a delight.

"Morning to you, too." And a small bow of his head in return just because. Was it the whole Beauxbatons thing? Had all the fanciness seeped in? If they got to go home in the next term or so, would she still bow in greeting? These were the obviously important questions running through the Headmaster's mind in the moment.

Morning Headmaster," Gemma smiled at Headmaster Trent as she quickly scooped out a place to sit. Not liking drawing attention to herself, sitting near the back was her best option.

Gemma spotted Faye sitting at a table with another Slytherin student. As she passed she gave the Hufflepuff a smile and mouthed hello. She made her way towards a girl sketching near the back.

"Mind if I join you? Without really waiting for a reply she sat down, pulling out her book and something to write with. "I'm Gemma Black, by the way." She politely introduced herself to her fellow housemate. She didn't really want to bother her so she flipped to a random page in the book and idly read.

"Good morning." Why some of the shortest students in the room opted to sit in the back was beyond him. Were he having a theory lesson that involved a lot of note taking, he may have suggested they move up to at least the middle (she and her housemate), but the nature of the lesson made it less of a necessity.

It would be fine. Soon enough, they wouldn't even be at the desks anyway.

Whew... she wasn't late and made it here on time, what a relief!

Walking into the classroom the now 4th year lioness made her way into the classroom. She was excited and couldn't wait until she found out what they were learning about. "Good Morning Headmaster Trent, hope you're well. " She said it loud enough for him to hear her but not to scare him from what he was doing if she did. Her bag slung over her shoulder she smiled warmly at the firsties before seeing Rylee. "Hiya Rylee." she said sitting down beside her.

Getting her supplies and everything she needed for class, her eyes caught a glimp of Cole smiled and gave him a friendly wave. Her eyes looking around she noticed the satin sheet that covered a box. Hm... interesting, very interesting indeed.

"Morning Starson." Trent happened to already be looking in the direction of the door when this one entered. "I'm doing pretty well, all things considered. Hope you didn't have too much trouble finding this room."

"Too much" because the man was fairly sure that 8 in every 10 students would be lost before finding this room. For many of them, being in a new castle was something they hadn't done in years. Back at Hogwarts, they knew where all the classrooms were and with the exception of the first years and transfers, they now suddenly didn't. He imagined it must have been strange.

Wrong.

Lucas wasn't sure where he'd taken a wrong turn - and was sure he was just following the general crowd - but he, somehow, ended up closer to the Music Hall? How????? There were a few seconds where he stood and stared at the hall in confusion before deciding that even Trent's weirdest classes wouldn't take place HERE.

And he would know, the man had held lessons in padded rooms with creepy creatures that stalked your nightmares.

It wasn't until he decided to turn and walk further along the corridor that he noticed people - people in Hogwarts robes, that is - walking into a different classroom and decided to follow them. It wasn't until he saw Trent himself at the front of the room that he let out a sigh of relief. "Hey, Headmaster!" Smile. He almost wanted to ask about the book but this didn't seem like a good time.

Instead, he turned and made his way towards an empty, uh, table. Not just a seat, a table with four seats. Uh????? Did this mean group work? Please, no. No no no. Oh no. He could be his own group, right? A group of four but of one? It meant extra work on his part but to him, that didn't sound like a bad idea at all.

Taking a seat towards the middle of his empty table, he frowned at the box in front of him and then looked up. Don't touch? ........ Well. The urge was there. It was all mysterious and he was itching to take a look at what was underneath the cloth and inside the box but....... Trent. Again, lessons with the man taught him that he probably should do what he said.

So, he crossed his arms across his chest. Not touching. Not even looking.

This one he had no worries about when it came to following the rules. Oh no, for a certainty, the man was sure Dakest would have seen "don't touch the box" and opted to then not touch the box. Of this he was sure.

"Morning, Dakest." There was an obvious look of relief on the boy's face that brought the faintest of amused smirks to the man's lips. Another one that had likely gotten lost then. Yeah, yeah he wasn't surprised. Not because it was Dakest, but because this was very much anticipated.

But was it him or did he look apprehensive? This was possibly the least intimidating classroom set up the man had had in a while. Nothing dangerous here. La la la.

"Morning." She greeted the Headmaster as she entered the room. The right room, mind you. Thanks, grumpy French student.

She could blame that one student for her own mood, but that would be forcing it. It wasn't like she had been particularly cheery prior to their encounter anyway.

Whatever.

"Morning, Meriwether." She was one of the students who worried about in the wake of the missing students. Last term had been an entire mess that still hadn't been sorted out and while it was overall a hard thing to deal with, he could only imagine how much harder it would have been for their closest friends.

"Oh Merlin, there's a third one of you." Malachi nearly gushed. Only nearly. Perfectly professional and composed. But internally, he melted a little. There were officially THREE precious beans in his class (not including his own precious son who he still felt awful about). Three of them and it was the sweetest thing ever. He'd have to try to learn their names. It was only right. Maybe learn the name of that energizer bunny, too for different reasons but y'know.

He wistfully thought of Durmstrang.

With a respectful nod at Trent, Alessandro said, "Good morning, Headmaster." The sixth year did not linger. The headmaster looked preoccupied with his reading.

The Hufflepuff looked around the room, considering where to sit, when he spotted Kaiser. He didn't exactly look welcoming, which is precisely why Alessandro took a silent seat beside him. And he didn't bother saying 'hello'. Kaiser could see he had joined him. Silence was perfectly fine.

"Morning, Toussaint." One of the more responsible of his students. Not one precious bean #3 would have to teach about manners and behaviour and that was how he preferred them to be. Not much of a talker, true, but attentive at the very least. Polite, too. Sometimes it was all you could ask for.

Of course, his son (precious bean #4) wouldn't have been needing those lessons in manners either, but there was something about the Hufflepuff. All that discipline that most of his peers and a small portion of the friends he hung out with lacked.

Be still his heart. "Another one." Just how many precious beans did this batch of first years have??? This one curtsied for Circe sake. A full on curtsy. "I like that you like my "aura of mystery"." He replied, a grin in place. "Can't say I've ever been told that before." No...when the students usually walked in, it was more of a "gawd we're gonna die. Today's finally the day he decides to end us all"--unnecessarily mind you. She really wanted to know that brunet’s name so that she could jinx his shoes. Mean.

Huffing slightly from the emotions she was trying to suppress, she looked around the room that was rapidly filling up and made a slight face whoops when she noted that a lot of the tables were filling up; most of them down to a few seats free. Guess she should have been here earlier if she had warned to pick her table and her workmates.

Giving Lucas and Kaiser a small head nod, she decided to emulate that helpful older student vibe and sit next to one of the newly sorted Slytherin girls. Maybe she could repay one of the many favours the current Seventh Years and already Graduated students had shown her by helping this girl in class if she needed it. Standing at one of the chairs, she gave the girl [FearlessLeader19] who was sketching a smile.

“Hey.” Holly started, before pulling out her chair and taking a seat as she got organised for the class. “I’m Holly.” There, she was being nice already. Hopefully, they would get started soon and she could find out what was under that satin because she was curious. Very curious about what he was hiding from them.

Malachi watched Tamesis walk in, head for the back and pick up a conversation with one of the two first years seated there without so much as a "good morning". The man raised a brow at the spectacle, knowing she knew better and honestly a little surprised by the action or lack thereof.

For now, he said nothing. He would--for this first day--chalk it up to her still being in summer mode and adjusting to a new environment. The man hoped this wouldn't become a habit.

He found a seat towards the middle, not too far up front nor too far back. Placement was everything or so he had managed to convince himself, in any case.

And another to walk in without offering up any sort of greeting to the Headmaster. Was this quickly becoming a trend?

This one also got a raise of the man's brow in his direction before Malachi decided to simply go back to his book. He was almost done and it was almost time for the lesson to begin but he would be keeping an eye on this one, in case it was an indication of further behavioural problems.

Having gone back to his book, the Headmaster was slightly startled by the sudden and quite chipper greeting of the Ravenclaw. Grey eyes rose immediately, looking for the source of the latest greeting.

"Morning, Pascal. You're in a good mood." If that greeting was anything to go off of.

Good to know some were keeping in good spirits despite all the changes.

"Morning, Sinclair." To say he was pleased so many of them managed to be early for the lesson despite all the change ups and the new environment would have been a slight understatement. Yes, this was something they all went through regardless during their first year at Hogwarts but this was an ENTIRELY new environment with a different language and a whole other school of children hanging about.

"Good morning, Rose." He greeted the Hufflepuff as she entered. By now, it was beginning to make sense for the latter set of students to find their way. When you thought about it, all they had to do was follow the ones who came before them.

Hopefully, it would be smooth sailings for those yet to arrive. The lesson would be beginning soon.

"Morning Al--Anderson." His records had indicated the name change. It would just take him a bit of time to acclimatize to it after spending the previous term referring to her by her previous name.

The good thing was, he at least already knew who she was. The adjustment wouldn't have been too difficult.

At the stroke of twelve, Malachi drew his wand and the door slammed shut as it always did before he began his lessons. The returning students, at the very least, would not be surprised by the gesture. It was what happened. It was what being late got you.

"Good morning and welcome! For those of you who don't know, my name is Malachi Trent, your Headmaster--though I confess I do hope you know I'm the Headmaster even if you know nothing else." If not...that was concerning in itself. "As you can very clearly see, the door is locked. Be on time for class, or risk being on the wrong side of the door and having an unnecessary meeting with me after for skipping." Unnecessary because all they had to do to avoid it was be on time. It helped to start heading for the class before the expected time, just in case. There were any number of things that could always go wrong. Constant vigilance was a real thing.

"We'll be starting the term off with some light fun. Nothing dangerous, but practical all the same." Here's to looking at you kids who liked to freak out the moment the classroom looked a little darker than usual or a few creatures with slightly terrifying teeth and claws and massive sizes just happened to be present and chained to the walls.

Sheesh.

"For now, pay no attention to the covered boxes. We'll get to that in a bit. Let's start off with an easy question. One that won't require you to crack open your textbook but will require you to put some extra effort into thinking." Thinking and teenagers didn't always go hand in hand but he was willing to believe in them for the purpose of getting things started.

"What are some intuitive and effective ways to evade someone or something that's chasing you? What methods would you employ?" How would they handle it? And no, Dakest, running and or screaming was not the answer.

OOC: Hello everyone! Thanks for your patience while I got this post up. The lesson has officially begun. Please note the classroom door is physically closed. If your character is late, they would have to get it open and there tend to be consequences for the late ones. If you're just joining in, feel free to pretend your character's been here all along! I'll be moving this class again in another 24 hours <3

Cole had finished reading about lethifolds and was about to flip to another page when a shadow came over his book page. Looking up at his cousin he nodded and gestured. "No, of course not. Please sit. Did you enjoy herbology class Carys?" He wondered. He knew that Carsyn wouldn't be far behind so his hope of sitting with some manly company probably went up in flames. Oh well, maybe in the next class he could choose to sit down next to one of the guys in class. He didn't know that many very well so maybe he should take action and do something about that. Hearing Headmaster Trent's concerned question about his wellbeing made him remember the events of the previous night. Cole really wanted to forget the whole barfing episode, but he probably had to endure a few days of gleeful remarks from his peers still before something else became the talk of the halls. Looking up at the headman he nodded slowly. "Yes, headmaster Trent I feel much better today. Thank you for asking. Healer Beryl cured me fully of my ailment." He didn't want to say barfing. It'd just remind everyone else of his little spectacle and he didn't want that.

Soon enough thankfully Headmaster Trent closed the classroom door and got the lesson started asking them about effective ways or methods to employ if you we're being chased. Cole thought about his answer for a long while not wanting to be first. He eventually raised his hand though and said "If i was chased by a stranger then I'd find somewhere to hide from the stranger and then if they passed my hiding place then find help from someone in authority/security to aid me. Also a good way to shake someone off that is chasing you is running in circles and back and forth to make them loose track of you."

No back alleys for her? "Of course not, Sir." The Headmaster didn't have to know she'd crossed her fingers behind her back when she said that, right? Because honestly, there was no way she could guarantee that she wouldn't be hanging out in any dark alleys this term. Which, actually, reminded her that maybe she should be looking for ones. So far she hadn't found one yet. Not really. Maybe she'd ask Cora for help.

ANYWAY, moving on for now.

'For now, pay no attention to the covered boxes.'

Lol, very funny, Headmaster. Shivvy's eyes were still trained on said covered box and the urge to peek under the cloth became more and more unbearable by the second. But she couldn't. Or maybe she could? Just a tiny little...

No, she had to stay strong. She was strong.

Sort of.

Placing her wand in her lap for now, Siobhán tried to focus on the lesson and the professor's questions for some much needed distraction. "I'd hide, probably. Or run. Fast. Depends on what was chasing me. Or who." Pause. "I mean maybe it's someone or something nice that's chasing me. Then I wouldn't try to evade them at all..."

Cecelia wasn't sure what the headmaster meant when he said she was the third one of something, but she figured it MUST be good by the way he was looking at her. She stood up just a LITTLE straighter and grinned her toothy grin, nodding along to his question. "Sure can, Headmaster. Mum's always asking me to be a good influence on my little brother, so I'm SUPER capable of being a role model." It was practically her JOB.

Did Cecelia feel really cool sitting with two older boys? Why yes, yes she did! It was EXTREMELY beneficial 'cause it meant she could learn from what they ALREADY knew and maybe even make some friends in the process, especially the one that was in her house. He probably had all KINDS of tips and tricks for her ALREADY and they were just WAITING to be uncovered! "Hi Alexandre, 'm Cecelia, but you can call me Cece if you want!" The blonde offered both boys a smile and then added, "You can call me Cece, too." To the original boy. The one who was a lion like her. She didn't know HIS name just yet, but she would.

You know what Cecelia liked? Easy questions. She liked hard ones, too, 'cause they made her THINK, but the easy ones meant she could offer the first thing that came to mind and there was a GOOD chance it wasn't going to come out sounding TOO silly. That's what she hoped, anyway. "Bet you could evade someone by going into a big crowd of people, 'specially if you're small like me. You could hide from them that way and give yourself more time to put distance between you and them."

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Claudine was quite happy to spend her time sketching... and alone. That is, until she was joined by a fellow first year and Slytherin. Great. Just great. Still, Claudine wasn’t exactly rude, even if the other girl had taken a seat without waiting for her to respond. “Hi, Gemma. I’ve seen you in our broom closet of a common room.’’ There was disapproval in her voice for the way the Slytherins were housed. “I’m Claudine.” It was at that moment she realised that Trent was speaking to her. He what? Why was he cramping her style like that? Was he really trying to stamp on her creative moment like that? Some professor he was. Wasn’t there enough time for her to get her materials for the lesson out? Claudine said nothing but her eyes bored into Trent’s before she closed the sketch pad and returned it to her bag. Since her head was down, she rolled her eyes so that the no- fun Headmaster could not see. Adults. They didn’t know how to have fun.

The Snakette now had all her necessary materials for the lesson on the desk. Door shutting seemed to be what all the Professors did when the class was starting and frankly, she agreed with them. Stragglers hardly deserved to be there. Now, she fixed Trent with her serious gaze as she listened. Without thinking too much on the question, her hand went up. “Running.’’

Oh! Claudine was her name. Gemma couldn't agree more when her fellow first year was complaining about the broom closet they had been stuck in. "Still kinda hoping its all dream and we'll all wake up in a mist free Hogwarts." Gemma couldn't help but be curious about what was in Claudine's sketchbook. Maybe she'd ask her after class or something. Or was that too friendly without really knowing the girl?

She closed her book once Headmaster Trent started speaking. Why was everything suggesting running and hiding? This is Defense Against the Dark Arts, right? "We can use magic, right?" Oops. She had just blurted that out without thinking. She quickly put her hand in the air to recover. "I mean, running and hiding are all good measures to take but if you can throw in a few spells to stun the person or people you're running from than that's better... For example run away but look back to cast 'Stupefy' or 'Petrificus Totalus.' Sure it''ll be hard to hit the target while running but it's some defense."

Beauxbâtons WAS very confusing though. She'd only just got the hang of making her way through Hogwarts this past year - mostly. And now she had to get used to yet another castle.

Naya was trying to figure out what the mysterious item on her table might be, when she was joined by another student. She was a fellow Gryffindor by the looks of things. That was good. The newbie was still trying to meet more of her housemates and classmates in general. Apparently this girl didn’t mince any words. With a chuckle, she said, “Hello to you too.” “I’m Naya......and who might you be?”

Ahh, but it was time for class to begin. Naya turned her attention to the Headmaster/Professor. The first assignment would be difficult. Pay no attention to the boxes. That was not easy for someone who was naturally curious. For now though, Naya tried to focus on the question that was being presented. How to evade someone or something chasing you. Well to her, the answer would depend on a number of factors. Was she being chased by a someone or a something? Someones could think, plan and change their plan based on your response. Somethings were all about catching their prey, no matter what. Was she a fourth year or a fully grown witch with lots of experience? Ok maybe she was overthinking things.

After giving the question a little more thought, Naya raised her hand. “Well if it happened to me today, I would probably try to hide. But......if I was a more accomplished witch, I would use a spell to conceal myself more effectively. Maybe I could use a spell that would make the chaser think he was seeing something other than me.”. Was that even a thing? Well if it wasn’t, it should be.

Anna had to refrain from pulling a face when the Headmaster asked her if she was 'alright'. "No." She said plainly, simply shrugging instead. "But I'll survive. Thanks for asking." She added not in a nasty tone, but not in a particularly warm one either.

As for his question, she couldn't help but raise one eyebrow and inhale deeply as lots of her classmates kept repeating 'running' and 'hiding'. Really? Hiding was okay, but how was just running going to evade a pursuer? Unless they had taken a stamina Potion that would keep them going for much longer than a normal person. "Knockback Jinx," was her short and sweet answer.

Alessandro raised his hand and offered, "If you're seventeen, you could apparate, sir." He knew that tactic did not apply to most of the people in this room. However, Al wasn't exactly certain most eleven year olds were going to be chased by attackers. They weren't Harry Potter. And if these eleven year olds were being attacked, it was far more likely they would be pursued by someone their own age, which, in that case, was a sound reason to get all kids trained in combat.

Durmstrang had the right of it.

Not like the French with all of their useless art programs.

The Toussaint had some other ideas about how to engage with an attacker, but that list did not feel relevant to this lesson.

Lucas's thoughts about being his own group didn't last long because soon enough, he was joined by a talkative - and very energetic, mind you - first year (Cecelia). He....... wasn't prepared for this? What was he supposed to do if something terrible happened? Was he supposed to PROTECT her? Did this mean he had RESPONSIBILITY????

Oh Merlin. Oh no oh no.

He was NOT cut out for this.

But all thoughts about that drifted away once she started talking about what's in the box and how she thought it might be something cool. Uh. No. He wasn't breaking a first year's heart. He thought it was going to be something scary or, at the very least, disgusting. Whatever was on the agenda for today's lesson, breaking a first year's heart wasn't up there.

"I bet it is. I bet it's something extra exciting otherwise it wouldn't be hidden." He wasn't sure what he would say if Trent's plans for the lesson turned out to be something less than cool in the girl's opinion but his mouth was talking and his brain was....... not thinking. " OR, I bet it's something we have to solve, or defeat, together. As a team." She didn't have to know that he wasn't, uh, the best at this subject. That was all Emma.

Lucas was relieved when someone else joined their table, someone who turned out to be a familiar face. "Hey, Alexandre! Yeah, of course. Spot's all clear." Smile. Could he tell he was relieved? Because he was. Even if Alexandre was still younger than him and that still left him the oldest and definitely the most responsible.

He hadn't signed up for this.

Cece. Her name was Cece. "Welcome to Gryffindor! I'm Lucas." There was a smile for her, too. And one for Holly who'd walked on by.

Light fun?!

Lucas's attention found Trent when he started speaking and he...... stared. Light fun. Light fun. Was he supposed to believe that? He wasn't sure. That was the problem with Trent: the man was a mystery, even if he had a way of making you feel comfortable in even the most dangerous of situations. But it was a slight relief to hear that they wouldn't be doing anything dangerous. He was going to believe you on that, Trent.

How would he evade someone that was chasing him? Easy. Trent probably expected this answer and he was going to make sure he going to stick to that. The only problem? A lot of people had mentioned running and hiding, which meant that he probably couldn't say it, right? Yeah? But it also meant that his usual option for a situation like this was probably the best option. He hoped.

His hand went up in the air. "Well, I mean, running and hiding is an option, yeah?" His usual answer for everything. "If you had time," Which was a BIG IF. "could you use the Disillusionment Charm on yourself? You know, appear to almost disappear. Throw them off your track completely while hiding in plain sight?"

As Holly tried to get comfortable, she watched one girl read and the other girl draw and wondered if she maybe should have just sat somewhere else… but no bother, class would be starting soon. Her gaze pulled away from the first year’s to look around the room - she noted that smile, Lucas - and caught the look that the Headmaster was giving her.

….. What ha- Oh. Whoops.

Looking slightly embarrassed, she made a ‘sorry’ face and mouthed ‘Hi, Headmaster back at him, not as loud as she would have spoken to him if she’d said it as she’d walked into the room - but loud enough that he should have been able to hear her. Especially since he’d been looking in her direction. Whoops. Where had her manners gone? Had they disappeared over Summer? >.> Apparently.

Looking at the two girls [Claudine & Gemma] as they mentioned their broom closet, she gave them both a smile. “Think about it this way, at least we don’t need to try and decipher the other languages to figure out if they are talking about us behind our backs.” Personally, Holly was glad to not be sharing. She’d have been incredibly paranoid before the year was out.

As others started to speak up first, she looked over at the two girls on her table as they both gave their responses. While running wasn’t something she’d like to say she’d do now that she was a bit older, three years ago it definitely would have been her answer. That, or get Cameron. That could even still be an option now.. However, she nodded almost to herself at the idea of stupefying or body-locking whoever was trying to chase you.

Her own hand raised as she continued that thought in her head. “Professor, continuing Gemma’s thread of thought, something to impede their movement like incarcerous or even a jelly-legs jinx? Anything that would stop them from chasing you.” She asked, lowering her own hand as she went back to taking notes from everyone’s suggestions.

And she was still looking at that covered box.

What she would give for it to be summer again. She was glad to be back learning magic, but she was a bit uncomfortable in her new surroundings. Not to mention the fact that she was already immensely sleep deprived.

She gave Analiese a friendly wave. "Hey Analiese!" she said, stifling a yawn. Adjusting to her sleeping arrangements in the Ombrelune Common Room was probably the most difficult part of coming to Beauxbatons so far. She had gotten quite used to her accommodations at Hogwarts, and it was always odd to be in new surroundings. The unfamiliarity was definitely taking a toll on her energy level.

Avalon's head snapped up as soon as Headmaster Trent slammed the classroom door. She knew that was how he signaled the beginning of the lesson, but the noise startled her nonetheless. She supposed that she would have to catch up with Analiese and get to know Alex more after class. At least the Headmaster was starting out with a relatively simple question. The second year raised her hand. "I would just want to be faster than whatever it was that was chasing me. So if the person running after me was on foot, I would try to find a way to fly or speed up somehow." But how likely was it that she would be able to find a broom mid-chase? Perhaps she could use some sort of acceleration charm. But she didn't know any yet. "I also agree that stunning the chaser could be helpful." Not that she knew any stunning spells yet, either.

Analiese jumped as Headmaster Trent slammed the door. She knew it indicated that the lesson had started as she had gotten used to it, but it was still surprising if you were taken off guard. She heard his question and raised her hand. "You can distract them by throwing something at them." She was actually going to say 'at their face' instead of 'at them', but didn't because it sounded too specific. And she wasn't exactly sure why any of them would be likely to get chased. Unless... Never mind. That idea was way too stupid to be true. She was way too much of an overthinker.

When she was referring to aura of mystery, Phoebe specifically meant the MYSTERY of the boxes, but she had to admit that the professor was pretty mysterious himself. He needed an eye patch to really pull it off, though.

Speaking of... Phoebe raised her hand. "Disguises, sir. Fake mustaches, capes, eye patches, maybe a good floppy hat."

She was here. And on time. Just before the door had closed and locked, thank you very much. Seated with Carys and Cole, of course. She was still getting used to the locations of classes and such. If it was Hogwarts, she could have made it to classes in five minutes or less, but even though Beauxbatons was a much smaller castle it seemed as if there were way more corridors and such. Or maybe it was just her attention span and wanting to explore it all. Vast contrast to a month ago when she was legitimately freaking out going to a new castle. But have you SEEN the French and Spanish boys?!? Seriously, it was as if they'd been artistically crafted as much as the tapestries on the wall.

Carsyn paid no mind to the Headmaster's introduction because she was well aware of who he was and what he taught. Her mind and gaze did wander to the covered boxes because of course. Listen, you tell someone to NOT pay attention to something, it's a natural human reflex to want to pay attention to it. It wasn't her fault. Her attention did snap back to the Headmaster when mentioned an easy question, to which most people seemed to suggest hiding.

Interesting and yet ... Carsyn raised her hand, "Hiding would be expected. Wouldn't you want to go for the unexpected? What I mean is that perhaps coming to a halt quite suddenly. Take quick turns. Summon a broom. Turn around and cast them with a stunning charm to slow them down or a tripping jinx." Okay, that was a lot of thoughts, but offensive tactics to employ seemed plausible.

Oh, hm? That was interesting. Kaiser was naturally curious about Trent's probably-not-a-mere-request, but his expression remained the same. Not that he was trying to hide it or anything, he just... wasn't all that capable of looking anything other than tired right now.

"I will be there," he replied, not a trace of worry in his voice. It would not have made sense to be worried when he knew he had broken no rules yet, at least not since term had started. There was a pause, before he remembered to tack on the, "... Sir."

Kaiser knew that, sooner or later, someone would join him at his table, and it wasn't such a long time before he was proved right. He didn't really expect that someone to be Alessandro, not without Kodee or Gunnar or someone like that already present too. But Alessandro it was, and he received a brief glance for his trouble. Kaiser could also appreciate silence.

He also just about caught the nod from fellow Slytherin, Holly, who was a few years below him, and returned it only slightly distractedly.

The slamming of the classroom door to indicate the start of class was something Kaiser was, by now, extremely used to. Though he absolutely detested being locked inside a room, he knew better than to show that particular weakness. Kaiser didn't even bother looking towards the door, instead focusing his attention on Trent again.

Okay, well, see? SEE? Questions like that were exactly the reason Kaiser tended to do well in this subject. It was just the sort of stuff he knew. Not that he'd, you know, lived certain aspects of it or anything. No, certainly not.

His hand went up. "I would..." Ah... well, yes, he had to be careful here. It wouldn't do to give his methods away to everyone in the room, would it? Just in case. "... climb." He left it at that.

In the context of fleeing a pursuer, giving this information away to Trent wasn't such a big deal. However, if the man realised one of his students had a propensity for climbing, and scaled school buildings on a sometimes daily (or nightly) basis, that... might not have such a good outcome, even if it wasn't technically against any rules (Kaiser didn't actually know if it was or not, he deliberately hadn't looked into it). Trent might even already know - Kodee knew, and that boy certainly had a way of talking without thinking to anyone who crossed his path, so was it really such a stretch to think the topic might have come up with the Headmaster one day? Kaiser would rather not risk it.

Anyway, he didn't need Trent to tell him if his answer was correct or not. He knew. He knew it worked. You just had to be good at it.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Fiona was struggling as she heard the others give their answers. She shrugged her shoulders and raised her hand to answer. "Er..what's it called? The Smokescreen spell, I think. You could cast it then apparate."

Either is fine. Abra nodded. It made sense to her to call him Professor inside class, and Headmaster outside of class. And if he was okay with that, then that was what she would do. As class started in a manner that Abra more or less expected, she was not expecting the locking of the door. Well, that just meant she couldn't be late. Or... well, perhaps she would just turn around and study in the library rather than face his wrath.

The question led immediately to the thought of hiding, finding someplace to squeeze into whilst the thing chasing her headed on, or disguise herself as something else. Something bigger and bullier. But they were already being spoken about by most of the class. What else would she do? Raising her hand she said "Professor perhaps if I were older and had a Phoenix I could summon it to come to me and then we could both disappear." Abra loved animals, and really wanted a Phoenix. But also, having a companion with her would be comforting.
