Default DADA Lesson 1 - Duelling 101

With all the windows pried open you can see the dust and grime about the arena there's a warmth that creeps into the room. It's the first lesson of the school year and the Headmaster sincerely hopes you took his advice and got a good night's rest. If not...well...the lesson still begins at 8 sharp and you'd do well to get there before then.

To either wall, the training dummies are lined up. Above them, on both walls, in large print is a warning to stay away from the dummies until told otherwise. With the writing in red, Malachi was sure it was a fair enough warning. Anything that came from that and he'd sensibly argue the students were asking for it.

As for the Headmaster, he's stood in the centre of the arena waiting for the students to begin arriving. A small yawn escapes his lips. Merlin, he needed to get back into the school schedule. The summer had been too amazing.

There are no chairs set out--of course not, it's the arena--and nothing besides the bright red sign seems out of place.

Come in, we'll be starting soon.

OOC: Welcome to the first DADA lesson!! Don't forget to read the classroom rules before posting. I'll have the first question up in 24-28 hours

The lesson hasn't started yet!

The Idea Man Kori-Kins

Tom was very nervous as he continued his bowing and he was grateful when the Professor called time but then his eyes went wide as he heard that they were going to be practicing a spell. He then heard that it was going the be the shield charm and he felt a bit of relief until he heard what they were doing.

He spent all his time, trying to learn the spell. "Protigo!" He practiced the spell did the wand movement but nothing happened, okay so maybe that wasn't right. What had the Professor said, he rattled his brain and then he tried again. "Protago!" He did the wand movement and soon the spell worked and he smiled.

He stepped over the line and bowed, trying to get the perfect 45 degree bow that most of the students seem to be able to do.

She glanced down at the line. She was over it? She was facing the thing? Did she have to bow again? Was the line like a reset button? UGH. THIS WAS SO TEDIOUS. Did the Headmaster know how tedious this was? Was this activity deliberately full of rules so that it would sap all the joy out of duelling and make them not want to duel anyone ever?

"This is tedious," Bernadette announced so that he could hear it. She stepped back over the line, shook out her hands so she'd be ready again, and then stepped back over it, this time quickly jerking her body forward at a 45 degree angle and then back up. She still held her wand at the ready, but she'd wait for the dummy to bow too before casting this time.

SINCE SHE SUPPOSED that was what they were supposed to do.

And hear her he had.

Tedious? "You're complaining is equally tedious," if not ineffective. "Yet here I stand without complaint." A gem he was. A saint. Putting up with her unnecessary comments like that. It was the teenage phase setting in. Soon, she'd be rolling her eyes at him, snapping her fingers. Full on backtalk. Yep. Any day now, then detentions for sneaking on boats would be the least of her worry--as would dummies you had to bow for.

There it was. The bow the dummy had been waiting for. It, in turn, bowed at the girl, mimicking her angle for angle. As it wasn't a savage animal, it did wait for her to straighten but the moment the girl did, spells came flying in rapid succession. A break? Time to think? What were those? The dummy was determined to disarm her and would not stop til then.

She dropped to the floor and rolled away from the cast spells. She kept rolling, popping back to her feet in a kip-up. Wand extended, Phoebe cast a weak Protego. But it was something, and would hopefully protect her until she could cast a stronger one.

It did take a moment for the dummy to re-calibrate where it was aiming but it did eventually get to shooting at the floor where the girl had dropped. The problem? She was already back on her feet and the dummy once again had to raise its aim. This time, when it did, there was a shield waiting.

A shield?

HAH! The first two spells bounced off it, but determined as the dummy was, it kept firing until the shield shattered. Time to dive again?

....Was that it?

VICTORY! With an air of elegance, the dummy bowed once again to its defeated opponent before rising and going still as it had been before the "duel". It's job had been complete. The boy was without a wand.

Oh. Malachi looked to the dummy, then the Slytherin. "Shake it off, Ryan." He walked over to the boy and fetched his wand from the floor. "Try again, more focus this time. You'll get it." The Headmaster offered the boy his wand and an encouraging smile mostly because the lesson wasn't over yet and giving up wasn't an option, but also because he genuinely cared that he give it another shot in the hopes of improvement.

When at first you don't succeed, yeah?

She knew she was being ridiculous. She was a pureblood, and magic ran deep in her very own blood. She could do this.

Isla opened her eyes and stepped across the line before she could change her mind. She'd already bowed, correctly for the most part, twice to this very same dummy in their previous activity. She had this! She then completed a full ninety-degree bow in as respectful of a way as she possibly could, making sure to stand back up this time. Her wand maintained a position that said she was ready. Let's do this! Please don't kill me, dummy. Was it just her, or were the other dummies firing way too many spells at once? (Way too many in her opinion, at least.)

Way too many?? NO SUCH THING!!! In fact, after returning the 90 degree bow, this dummy was all about the rapid fire shots and it let the girl have it--them--truly. The spells were somewhat evenly spaced, but sent one behind the other without any signs of letting up.

Perhaps, with a few more years of experience and the necessary power required for such an advanced spell, it would hold up against the rapid onslaught of the dummy. Perhaps the spell would have more power if she tried one closer to her current skill range. Whatever the case, within a few more spells, the shield the girl had cast shatters and leaves her open once more. Best think of something, quickly.

She waited for the dummy again, before stepping back as per their Headmaster's directions. She appreciated Headmaster Trent. He, unlike others such as Professor Schmoe, was an incredibly well poised man who knew how to command a classroom. He was firm, but encouraged growth without being overly intimidating. His lessons were sensical unlike some of the others, such as Astronomy where they were made to do things such a rollerskating. He was in all ways incredibly sensible. It was something Nina Castillo appreciated immensely. He was also very pretty, which made listening to him all the more pleasant. It's why she was always one of the first few to settle down and turn her attention towards him after an activity. Now was no exception. He had her undivided attention, even with all the sneezing she was still doing. This dust was going to end her.

She was relieved to know that they would be practicing defensive spells rather than working on offensive ones today. It wasn't that she didn't see the value in learning offensive spellwork, but she found defensive skills were better fit for this crowd. Honestly, some of her classmates were far too eager with their wands and they did not need to learn more skills to attack one another when it already happened on the regular. She had heard of the way Alessandro had attacked Jove last year and with students like him on the loose, Nina really worried. That and Nina hated dueling. Had she mentioned that before? That she saw no point in it? Because she didn't. There was no point, not even for sport. It was a waste of time and energy that could otherwise be used in a more productive manner that did not encourage violence against one another. And that was her hot take.

Of course she felt confident in her ability to cast the shield charm, but because she was smart she would practice it anyway. First she began practicing the movement, a single horizontal line going downward. It was always a good idea to practice a movement beforehand, as it required fluid motion. Stiff wrists could make for an unfortunately inaccurate movement and she wanted everything to go well in the moment. It was like stretching before going for a run. It slowed down the process, but it saved time in the long term and made for avoidance of otherwise horrible situations. After practicing the movement on its own, she added the incantation in. "Protego," which gave her a full shield. Of course she felt the simple incantation was almost below her at this point as mere first years were using it. And so she opted to work with the other levels as well. Practicing "protego duo," next.

After all the time spent practicing, she finally stepped back up to the red line. Once again she eye contact with her dummy, before bending down into a 90 degree angle. Here she waited for her dueling partner to do the same. She had seen some of the tragic students who had been impatient, straightening their backs before their dummy had a chance to return the bow. So immature. She pitied them, honestly. They did deserve to be knocked down though. She did enjoy watching that happen.

Once again, the dummy returned her bow, pleased to know it wasn't being rushed into a bow before it was ready. Similarly, it did wait for the girl to straighten before doing so itself but when it did straighten it shot a test spell at her. Just...testing reflexes. A moment later, it shot another, at quite the even tempo. A pattern?

This was the safety line. Fortunately there would be time to continue practicing the bowing but now they were also adding in offensive spells.

The shield charm was one that the fifth year could confidently cast in her sleep. Which was why even though on some level she knew she should be casting a stronger shield charm, the most basic shield charm was one that she could do well enough. It was forceful on its own because of the confidence that she had with it.

Deep breath. Taking a step over the red line. And she repeated her forty-five degree bow, while simultaneously casting a "Protego" because she didn't need to be disarmed mid-bow.

The dummy didn't attack--with spells.

It was AGHAST at the fact she would choose to start casting spells before it even had the chance to return the bow. THE VERY BASIC OF COURTESY!! The NeRvE. One did not cast before both opponents had gotten into position.

Rather than throw magic her way, the dummy reacted in much the same way the others had when they were offended. It rammed into the girl with full force (the brunt of the blow absorbed thankfully by her padding--but the force was such that it would've knocked her back beyond the line. Next time, maybe she'd take the duel one stage at a time instead of jumping the wand. Hmph.

Will these dummies reallllllyyyy give up? Guess she just have to wait and see.

Her feet planted on behind the red line, she looked at the dummy closely, casting the shield charm on her "Protego Duo" she said under her breath and repeated the same bow she did earlier. Hopefully she can think fast on her feet with all the spells she will be using today.

She could think as fast as she wanted, but while she stood behind that red line, the dummy would not react. It was equivalent to her doing nothing at all as it was outside the dummy's range of reactions.

Perhaps if she moved forward, as she'd done the first time back during practice.

The bow was acceptable and this saved the boy an unpleasant tumble with the dummy. What it didn't save him, however, was the sudden rapid firing of spells after the dummy, too, bowed. Of course, it had waited for the boy to straighten but once he did, there was no hope of an end.

Tom was happy when the dummy gave him a bow back, that was one thing done at least, he would have been sad if he hadn't even managed to learn how to bow properly. He smiled as he stood up straight and WHAT THE? This wasn't fair, the dummy was firing way to many spells at him, "Protago!" He shouted as he did the wand movement. This dummy should at least slow the pace down, he eyes were begging the dummy to slow down a bit.

She was glad the dummy took her new bow as acceptable because even if her bottom could handle another blow her ego could not. She didn't need to look like a first-year in front of people in this class. Though she didn't have too much time to think about it because the dummy started quickly with its attack.

Glad that her wand was up and ready she had no struggle to do the movement and say with very assertive tone, "Protego" and moved slightly to her left, though there wasn't just one spell coming for her she hoped that one protego should do the trick, but if it didn't she needed to be ready, "Protego duo" her wand was moving quickly and easily into its motions for the spell.

Blake letting some of the color drain from his cheeks. Took his wand back from the Headmaster. "Thank you." He added since the headmaster had taken the trouble to pick his wand up for him. "I let me guard down, I wasn't ready." Blake admitted. "I won't let it happen again." Blake was determined, or at least felt determined.

Taking his stance once again in front of the dummy and took a bow with his wand at the ready, and waiting for the dummy to return the bow and fire a spell at him.

No, it was whenever she was ready to start the "duel". This time around, the girl didn't seem as observant as some of her other classmates who had managed to get their dummies started.

Her dummy didn't move an inch, silently waiting for her to do what needed to be done.
Claudine stared blankly at the dummy for a moment, expecting it to start throwing the Disarming Spell at her. It wasn't until jets of light started to cast a glow around the room that Trent's earlier words echoed in her head. Oh, right. She was supposed to get things started. Slightly flustered, Claudine stepped forward then repeated her bow exactly as that time before. She maintained her eyes on the dummy, clutched her wand tightly and prepared herself to cast the incantation to defend herself. She started to straighten up.

Bring it, dummy.

Okay, what had she done wrong? She hadn't gotten too close, that much was obvious. If she had, she would've found herself on her butt like so many of her classmates. Nor had she done the bow wrong, because again, she wasn't on her butt. So, what was it?

Whitney took a look around, to see what her classmates were doing.

Oh. She was supposed to stand in front of the line. She moved to just in front of the line and bowed again (a perfect 90 degrees again).

Isla barely had time for her eyes to grow as wide as quaffles, when the dummy started rapid fire shots right toward her. See, this was why she didn't want to cross that line in the first place. This dummy had clearly not been schooled on the rules of etiquette. That entire line of thinking took her about one second, because in the very next second, she was moving her wand in the horizontal movement Trent had taught them. "PROTEGO!" she called out.

She'd heard that spells were more powerful when you put intent behind them, so she tried her best to focus on a shield protecting her from the insane rapid firing coming toward her. As hard as she tried, though, she still fumbled around a little bit and ending up stumbling back behind the line. She stopped to catch her breath, and when she did, she looked at the headmaster. "THAT," she said, pointing toward the insane dummy, "is why we need dueling etiquette."

Her dummy had obviously not been paying attention to the first part of the lesson.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Minjae was a little frustrated that the dummy had not bowed down immediately. But when it did eventually on the first try as well, he brightened up again. Getting up slowly, the Hufflepuff looked to the side to look at the Headmaster before he walked back over the red line like instructed.

Shield charm…. this really was NOT the lesson he had hoped they’d get. The Shield charm was his specialty! He did not want to review it again by practicing for ten minutes!

Still, with a detention already been given out , Minjae did not want to risk faking his practicing so he found a place, made sure he could not hurt anyone and took out his wand from his wrist holster and began to practice. It had been a while and the fourth year was secretly glad that he did not step over the red line without practicing first but eventually the Hufflepuff had it by making a shield in front of him.

Ten minutes was a very long time when you were BORED so when the Headmaster called them back and they were told to duel the dummies, the teenager became more alert. Finally something he wanted to do!

He still held his wand in his hand as he stepped over the red line, feeling a rush of energy as this was the best part of the lesson so far. DUELING YAS. Well, kind of…not really BUT STILL!

Like before, the Hufflepuff bowed again and waited for the dummy to start as he was the one defending today.

”Bring it on!”

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

It seems that Fiona had been a tad overconfident. She gritted her teeth in frustration as her Shield Charm was broken, leaving her vulnerable. Quickly, she made the specific wand movement as she clearly yelled, "Protego!!" Hopefully, this time would be an improvement.

Lucas stared at the dummy in confusion as it........ did nothing?! Uh? Was that a good thing? Because he couldn’t really tell right now. He looked around him, silently hoping that he wasn’t the only one with a still dummy but all he could see were attacks being made and, uh.......

Oh Merlin oh no.

Before his brain could think any further, Trent had started speaking and so, he turned his attention to him, instead. Defence? Protego? The fifth year couldn’t help but steal a glance at the dummy he was working with. If he was being honest, he felt a little better at the idea of only working with a defensive spell, but only a little. There was still a large part of him that didn’t like this at all.

Didn’t Trent say that he would enjoy this lesson? Merlin, that was....... wrong.

Practising was something he could do so he decided to focus on that. For ten minutes. In fact, he tried to focus on a stronger version of Protego in the hopes that it might make him feel a little better prepared. Kind of like having a better sword before you go into battle. Kind of.

And then the ten minutes were up.

Was it time to start panicking?

Oh merlin oh merlin oh merlin

This was...... fine. He guessed. Taking some deep breaths, Lucas shuffled forwards, his green eyes set on the dummy in front of him. "Uh, hey!" Should he introduce himself? Probably not, right? Instead, he gave the dummy a 90 degree bow, just as he had done previously.

Let the battle commence?

This was not his kind of lesson.

The dummy was determined to disarm her and would not stop til then.
oh, OKAY Headmaster.... he was acting like her dad or something. Bernie did NOT roll her eyes, though she thought about it, and just turned back to her dummy.

Um, WHOA WHOA WHOA WHOA. Whoa. Whoa. Why was it moving so fast?! Bernie tried the horizontal wand movement as many times as she could, yelling, "Protego! Protego! Protego! PRO-TEG-O!" but she wasn't sure if it worked, or if a shield went up before the spells did.

Didn't this dummy come in a slower speed, like for second years?!???!

No no no no. The dummy was too fast, and Phoebe had to scramble after her wand when her shield spell broke and her wand skittered across the floor. She grabbed it and rolled over to cast again, but again her wand went flying. NOT FAIR. She was a second year up against a sixth year dummy!

"DUMB DUMMY!" Phoebe grabbed for her wand again, and when it went flying a THIRD time, she screamed in frustration and kicked the dummy in the shin. "How am I supposed to learn anything if you won't let me CAST A SPELL?"

After Naya executed her bow, she waited. Finally, she got a response. The dummy returned her bow and didn’t seem to be offended. That was good. She guessed that she had done okay, for now anyway. Then hearing the Headmaster’s voice, she stepped back behind the red line and listened to the next directions.

They were moving on and Naya made sure to give the Headmaster her full attention. It was time to practice the shield charm because it was all about defense today. The fifth year had her wand ready. She copied the wand movement several times before adding the incantation to the movement. “Protego”, she said, as she repeated the spell. Naya wondered whether or not she should up her game and try the harder level of the spell. She decided to stick with the basic Protego, for now.

After going over the spell, Naya heard that it was now time to try it for real. She didn’t fancy getting her wand knocked out of her hand, so she really needed to do this thing right. Taking a deep breath, Naya stepped back in front of the red line and faced her dummy. He was kind to her before, but this time would be very different. She locked her eyes on the dummy and slowly bent forward until she was in the 90 degree position like before. She knew what she had to do and tried very hard to maintain her focus. “Alright Mr. Dummy”, she thought. “Let’s do this.”

Was he supposed to bow again? Alexandre hadn't even thought of that. But then he kept waiting and waiting and nothing was happening when he thought it would. He glanced around, and it seemed as if the others were bowing again. That made sense, he supposed. The first bow was just a practice one and now it was the real one before the real duel. Right. Okay. He bowed again, the same 45 degree angle as the first, and waited for the dummy to bow as well.

A moment later, it shot another, at quite the even tempo. A pattern?
Of course Nina was practicing patience with an agenda. There were only a few rigid rules for this activity. The first obviously being that they were only to use defensive magic. The second, however, had everything to do with what they had spoken about in terms of etiquette. Opponents in a duel had to bow to one another and were not to begin dueling until the gesture was made. As such, Nina was quite aware that the dummy was bound to these particular set of rules and decided to make the very best use of it.

So she would take it slowly. Staying in her 90 degree stance until she felt properly ready to immediately fire back at the dummy who would surely waste no time in beginning to fire spells. She wasn't daft. She could see how hard they were firing at the other students, her peripheral vision was very useful. Gripping her wand in hand, Nina readied herself and planned to count the seconds before its first attack. When she straightened her back she did not waste a single moment in time, immediately ducking to dodge the first spell that came only four seconds later and lifting her wand to cast her own in response to the second, also four seconds after the first. "Protego duo!"

Might this be a pattern? She knew not to grow comfortable in it, knowing Professor Trent to be very clever in his methodology. Though she did keep the count of four in mind. It was best to be vigilant.

Relief hit Kaiser like a wave. He had by now donned the protective padding, and faced his dummy from behind the line, though had managed to delay his bowing for long enough that Trent had addressed them again. And that was where said relief had come in. There hadn't actually been any real need to dawdle; the bowing was only leading up to practicing a shield charm. No going on the offensive, even to defend. That was... that was good.

So, when Trent had told them all to get going, Kaiser - his demeanour now a little clearer of the preoccupation that had been clouding it - had confidently stepped forward over the line. He didn't see much need to practice, and anyway, time was running short, and he still had to bow before the dummy would throw a Disarming Spell at him.

Maths had never been Kaiser's strong point, and even after a few years of Astronomy lessons, all that stuff about degrees and angles made him totally glaze over, but Trent's examples - and all the other students he had watched since - had been enough to tell him exactly what the bow should look like. He faced off against his so-far-inactive dummy, and bowed.

The 45 degree one, or his best attempt, because the idea of bowing the full 90 degrees made him nervous in a way he couldn't really comprehend, let alone explain.

She straightened up as well after the dummy bowed back to her. And ... it was firing spells at her! Quick, she had to defend herself. "Protego Duo!" She said, pointing her wand at the dummy. An invisible shield appeared between Jina and her opponent. It didn't look like the dummy was planning to give up soon ... she wondered how long her shield was going to last. It was stronger than Protego, but it certainly was not invincible.

Hmph.
Whatttt theeee ???

Even though Carsyn usually had quick reflexes, they were taken off guard by the blow of the dummy, knocking her back across the line. Had she done something wrong? She wasn't supposed to cast spells yet? Peering down the line at some of her peers, she frowned in confusion. They were casting. They were bowing. Oh.

She hadn't actually bowed within limits of the dummy yet. Apparently vigilance should be reserved for ACTUAL duels, yes? Maybe? Or was this a test of dueling etiquette too? Smoothing her uniform out, the fifth year took a deep breath before taking another step forward to cross the line. And bowed. Forty-five degrees, whilst keeping her eyes on the dummy all the same in case for any sudden movements once more. Apparently couldn't be too sure ?? Maybe her dummy was broken? Only time would tell as she awaited with bated breath, holding the bow ...

Holy Hippogriffs!

These dummies were NOT playing around and Cecelia hit the deck, so to speak, when HER opponent dummy started firing spells at her. It was fast, waaaaay faster than the second year had anticipated, and she wasn't sure she'd be winning THIS duel.

UH. UM.

"Protego!" She spoke clearly and forcefully as she cast the spell, hoping it'd do SOMETHING. Otherwise this girl needed HELP.

Headmaster Trent had to be out of his mind. She didn't even get a chance to fully stand and swipe her arm in the downward movement giving a slightly panicked and nervous "Protego" She felt her wand sputter a bit as she moved the wand. Well she supposed here went nothing. She gave another stern "Protego!" Good night, her stubborn wand she was not prepared for the sass back from a wand of all things. Sure she expected to see Peeves around sassing everyone, even some of the students.... but her wand?

She took a deep breath again, "Protego!" This time she watched as her wand did as it was supposed to do and send up a shield... okay it wasn't the best shield, but she just hoped that it actually did the job. especially because she was pretty sure the protective armor Headmaster Trent forced them to wear wasn't going to do much.

The eyes of the first year did nothing to appease nor dissuade the dummy. It was now on a war path and intended to send that wand flying one way or another. That being the case, the dummy didn’t stop. Many spells pelted against the boy’s shield charm, hammering away at its magic. How long would it last was anyone’s guess but the dummy was patient and kept at it.

Here, the spells hammered against shield as well. The dummy showed no signs of ceasing but instead ramped things up a bit.

It didn’t take long for the first shield she’d cast to shatter but by then, the second, stronger shield was in place and it seemed to be deflecting the spells well. For now. How long could the girl’s shield last? Longer than the dummy’s determination? They would have to see.

Taking his stance once again in front of the dummy and took a bow with his wand at the ready, and waiting for the dummy to return the bow and fire a spell at him.

Once again, the dummy returned the boy’s bow and waited for him to rise. It was, afterall, good etiquette but make no mistake, the moment Ryan straightened, he would find himself once more under hard attack.

Slightly flustered, Claudine stepped forward then repeated her bow exactly as that time before. She maintained her eyes on the dummy, clutched her wand tightly and prepared herself to cast the incantation to defend herself. She started to straighten up.

Bring it, dummy.

Her exact bow was returned with a brisk, exact bow from the dummy. Courtesies taken care of, the dummy waited for her to straightened before anything else, but once she did, she would find that the dummy did...nothing. How...curious. Constant vigilance, yeah?

Whitney took a look around, to see what her classmates were doing.

Oh. She was supposed to stand in front of the line. She moved to just in front of the line and bowed again (a perfect 90 degrees again).

She wasn't going to be the one to start the duel, obviously. Nope, she was going to let the dummy start, whenever it was ready.

The dummy was ready the moment the bow had been offered. Once the girl straightened, she would find herself in the same position as several of her classmates—under rapid fire. Reflexes would surely come in handy here, as would a good shield charm.

On the floor or on her feet, it made no difference to the dummy that just kept hammering away at her shield. It would break, surely, it was simply a matter of when and of how much it could take before it was no longer effective at protecting her. Then the wand would be lost.

Malachi inclined his head toward the First Year, conceding easily to her statement. Yes. It was one of the reasons they needed etiquette during duels. Merlin knew it was hard enough without people going crazy.

Well observed.

Bring it on??

That it would! Once the dummy returned the boy’s bow and the pair had straightened, the dummy unloaded everything it had been holding in. Several spells shot toward the boy at once, barely a second’s pause between each. It intended to dislodge that wand and it would be giving it its all.

This time, the shield seemed to put up more of a fight. Even while her first shield shattered, the spells did not stop coming but it appeared the girl was quick on her feet. The only question now was how long a shield of that scale could survive an unyielding assault. The dummy had no intention of stopping. They would have to see.

Commencing was a good idea. How else would they get to the activity? The dummy returned the boy’s bow easily enough but once the pair straightened meeeeeerlin this kid was in for it. Several spells were shot, all together, all coming from a slightly different angle in an attempt to dislodge the Gryffindor’s wand. Had he been ready?

She knew what she had to do and tried very hard to maintain her focus. “Alright Mr. Dummy”, she thought. “Let’s do this.”

The dummy, polite as it was, returned the 90 degree bow well enough. It did of course wait for the girl to straighten but once she did, there was likely nothing to stop the dummy as it would begin the same rapid assault many of her classmates were now under. Hopefully she was ready.

He bowed again, the same 45 degree angle as the first, and waited for the dummy to bow as well.

The dummy did bow, yes it did and it waited there for the boy to straighten.

As it turned out, however, the dummy wouldn’t begin this attack so soon. It stared at the boy, as if...waiting...and waiting....but it wasn’t truly waiting and second later spells began flying in rapid succession. It would remove that wand.

Best to be vigilant indeed while the dummy continued to test her shield. It felt sturdy. Unlike to break with these evenly spaced attacks and so, quite without warning, the dummy fell into the same pattern many others had. Rapid spells. One right behind the other. It would attempt to wear the shield down. Break it with shear force.

How long could it hold up?

Oh look, the boy who had done nothing earlier had now returned. The dummy appraised him then his bow. In turn, it bowed too.

Was he ready? The moment they both straightened, the boy would find himself under rapid fire attack not unlike that of several of his classmates. Be prepared! It was happening and the dummy had no thoughts to stop. In fact, it had no thoughts at all.

It was stronger than Protego, but it certainly was not invincible.

The dummy wondered the same. A few more spells? Several more? What would it take for the shield to break? It was prepared to find out, so the dummy kept at it, increasing both the speed and force with which it cast. Surely something had to give one way or another.

Holding the bow was smart. Waiting for the opponent to return the courtesy was equally smart. It saved the girl another ramming and meant they could begin. In turn, the dummy would wait for her to straighten but once she did, the girl was sure to find herself under rapid and unrelenting fire.

Hopefully those eager reflexes will kick in in time.

UH. UM.

"Protego!" She spoke clearly and forcefully as she cast the spell, hoping it'd do SOMETHING. Otherwise this girl needed HELP.

Oh, it did something. Of course it did. A shield did appear and the spells the dummy shot bombarded it with everything they had. Unrelenting as they were, it took little time for the shield to shatter. Perhaps it was time for another? Or she could stand there and await her fate. Truly, the dummy wouldn’t have minded. Give in now and they could have peace. Those were the dummy’s terms.

The dummy was indifferent to the shield that was cast. It had a duty and it would carry it out. As a result, the spells began coming in harder, making near visible dents in the girl’s shield until they were no more. Without protection, it was surely time to get some more. Regardless of her choice, the dummy took aim at her wand. It was on a mission and wouldn’t be stopped.

Malachi inclined his head toward the First Year, conceding easily to her statement. Yes. It was one of the reasons they needed etiquette during duels. Merlin knew it was hard enough without people going crazy.

Well observed.
Isla suddenly had a sinking feeling that no matter how hard they tried, they would all fail. The dummies were charmed to keep going until they had the wands, and no shield charm anybody could produce would stop that. Trent more than likely had a point he was trying to make with this, and Isla only had an idea about what that point might be.

For now, though, it was time to go back in for a second round, which she really didn't want to do but pretty much had to. At least she wasn't as terrified of the dummy as she was before. She knew what to expect--insane, rapid firing. HOW RUDE.

The first year turned away from Trent, who she'd been talking to, and looked back at the dummy. She increased her grip on her wand and stepped back across the line. This time, she did a forty-five degree bow. It made her feel like she was paying more attention to her surroundings. A second later, she'd stood back to her full height. Alright, you insane, etiquette-ignoring dummy. Bring it on.

Naya did not have to wait long. The dummy returned her bow and it was on. The spells came at her fast. Since she knew what was coming, Naya was ready.....at least she thought she was ready. She made a quick wand movement and yelled, “Protego”. The Gryffindor was happy to see that a her shield appeared and not a moment too soon. The spells kept coming and Naya wasn’t sure how long she could keep her shield intact.

This was hard. Maybe Naya should have gone with the Protego Duo. Maybe that would have held up a little longer, but she hadn’t practiced that spell. For now she was trying hard to concentrate and maintain her focus. The dummy was relentless. Spells kept coming and coming. Naya wondered how long the dummy could keep up the attack. Unfortunately, she was thinking about that and for a brief second, not about maintaining her shield. Big mistake. The shield was down. She tried to get herself back together and start again. “Protego”, Naya said again.

Who would run out of juice sooner? The Gryffindor or the dummy?
Why couldn't spells work like Muggle paintball, where every time you fired one off, a SPLAT of paint alerted you as to where the spell had gone? Or if it had fired at all? Why was this game more like.... Laser Tag?! Bernie had used to like laser tag, even though all the boys always spelled like B.O. before and after the games.

This, this dummy though? Trent could KEEP IT.

"STAAAAAHP," the second year yelped, still trying to throw up, "PROTEGO! PROTEGO! PROTEGOPROTEGOPROTEGO!" against the dummy. It was just becoming TOO MUCH. She couldn't say a three syllable spell as quickly as the dummy could fire off disarming ones! It wasn't fair, and with every cast of the stupid thing, she started to lose her grip on her wand.

She could tell. This was the dummy's fault. Her fingers were getting sweaty from all this spellcasting, and and and plus the dummy was trying to disarm her, and after one, "PROTEGO!" too slow, she full on dropped her wand as though it were a magnet and the floor was a Muggle refrigerator.

Bernadette FUMED. She should throw a Phoebe James and KICK THE DARN THING.
