Default Creative Expression!

Welcome to our Celebration of Genre Creative Expression thread!

At the start of each month, your FanFic Goblins will conclude the previous genre and announce the new genre in the Announcements thread, but we will also make a post to announce the new genre in THIS thread so that you can keep up to date.

The Goblins knew that a Celebration of Genres in the FanWorks area has to have a place for you to come to share your creative work, and this is just the place. You can write as many pieces as you want each month, but it MUST relate to Harry Potter (Canon/SS Canon etc.) and it MUST relate to the monthly genre.

No discussions in this thread, but you CAN utilize the Discussion thread.

Some suggested creative works include:
  • Drabble
  • Ficlet
  • Poetry

Genre for SEPTEMBER 2018: HISTORICAL FICTION

The Escapee – Part I
1891
A Ficlet
Swarms of dementors, like angry bees, congregated in the center of Azkaban. The diamond shaped building had a hollowed middle where the dementors could float freely while choosing their victims in the cells. Andronias Dodge, a keeper of keys at the prison, watched in curiosity and slight anxiety as the eerie creatures seemed to be angry about something.

“An escaped prisoner!” the jail-keeper proclaimed, and in that swift sentence, the entirety of the prison buzzed with feverish movement. The keepers and dementors searched both high and low for the escaped prisoner, but to avail. Andronias couldn’t get close enough to the escapee’s cell because dementors had flooded the area with their searching.

By nightfall, the prison had calmed considerably. The Minister was meeting with the jail masters, and the dementors had claimed their victims for the evening. Andronias shivered as he heard a woman’s anguished cry from the floor above as he approached the escapee’s cell.

How had the dementors missed it? Perhaps due to their lack of eyes—there were words written on the wall.

Follow me.

Andronias stepped closer to touch the letters, and that was when he fell right through the floor.

The Mysteries of a Muggle-Wizard Toddler, 2026
A Ficlet

Scott Newton had certainly been the root of some mysteries, from the time his brother Walter was born. Scott was two, and he reacted in a typical fashion; feeling neglected, unloved, begrudging the tiny infant for stealing his life.

One morning, when Melissa went to check on her eldest, she saw in alarm that his bedroom door was closed. They never closed the door. Furthermore, when she attempted to open the door, it was locked. The door didn't even have a lock!

"ORVILLE!" she shrieked, waking up baby Walter, whose cries demanded attention. Melissa was crying, and pounding on the door as Orville bound up the hallway and opened the door with a crashing BANG, shoulder versus door. There was no real harm done to the shoulder, but the handle was mangled in the process.

"Baby, oh baby," Melissa cried, holding her two-year-old. Scott seemed rather oblivious to what had happened, rubbing his eyes and looking with much surprise at the door, now flat on the ground.

"But what on earth caused it?" Melissa was asking the locksmith.
He looked as puzzled as they all did. "I don't know, ma'am. How does a door without a lock ever... well, lock?"

The Escapee – Part II

A Ficlet
Whirling downward, Andronias found himself unable to make a noise. His heart was too shocked. It was only when his body hit the ground with a THUD that he gasped for air.

Dust billowed around him like clouds. He coughed, a hacking cough, and stood up. His legs wobbled slightly, but he was glad nothing was seriously broken.

But…where was he? It didn’t make any sense! A hole in the floor of the inmate’s prison cell and now he was here? Was this the basement? Andronias never knew what might lie down here, but he was shocked dementors NOR key keepers had never noticed a GAPING HOLE from the escapee’s cell.

But as he looked upward…the hole he had fallen from had disappeared.

What in Merlin’s beard…

Andronias dusted himself off and looked around. The room he was in was dark and grey. It sounded hollow in here, and there was a small corridor leading from the room. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw it: a silvery tail disappeared from his view heading into the corridor.

What else can I do but follow? He asked himself, and he found himself pursuing what was clearly a patronus.

Wizarding is the New Noir
The tiny office crammed over the back end of a broom shop had seen its share of horrors since Garrick Gillespie hung up his shingle. The incident with the exploding nifflers in a duffle came to mind, which was not the darkest day but was by far the messiest. It seemed to Gillespie that he’d only seen the dark side of Wizarding society. The worst of the worst, that was who he dealt with every day.

He tugged a fedora over his eyes to shut out the sunlight poking through the window slats and directly into his brain. On the streets, Gillespie never wore a fedora, but it was necessary in his office. Not only did he find that his clients came to expect a certain look to their private investigator, but it was vital for keeping the sun from his eyes. Stupid blinds were useless.

The door opened and shut, but Gillespie didn’t move. Didn’t have to. It wasn’t like a paying customer had shown up.

It was just Colson, the annoying kid Gillespie had hired on in a moment of weakness. Needed himself an admin, but what he’d gotten for his trouble was a baby-face who was too keen to do the work properly. And it wasn’t as if Gillespie could really afford to pay him, which he’d explained more than once, but Colson wasn’t having any of it. Said he’d work for free until they got on their feet.

Idiot kid.

Said idiot kid was blathering on about something or other, but Gillespie just sat stock still and hoped maybe he’d believe the older man had fallen asleep. Not that he could sleep, not with the amount of Pepper Up pumping through his system, but the kid didn’t have to know that. Maybe he’d just take the hint and wander out into traffic. First time for everything.

“… and I know you said to leave the Christmas case alone for now, but I thought I could just drop by again and follow up with some questions of my own. And I closed it!”

Gillespie roused himself, tipping the fedora back off his eyes and squinting at Colson through the halo of sunlight surrounding him. “What’s that? You closed it?” Impossible. The Christmas case had come in just yesterday, and Gillespie hadn’t even hit the pavement on it yet, and here the kid was claiming he’d closed it?

Holliday Christmas was a bright-as-new-sickles dame with legs for years. She’d shown up on their door step right as Colson was unlocking the door, and both he and Gillespie had wondered if she wasn’t a bit lost.

Turned out she was right where she meant to be. Her mother Eve had gone missing that very morning, and Holliday found her way to the first Wizarding P.I. in the book. Lucky them. Most families of the missing waited a few days, or longer, before they thought to ask for help. Most daughters didn’t even know to go looking for a P.I. And here Holliday had found them herself only hours after her mother disappeared.

“How’d you do it, Colson?”

“Call me Mikey. I told you!” Gillespie grunted. Bad enough to have a cherub-faced adolescent working for him, but he wasn’t going to call him Mikey. “Anyway, I just dropped round today to ask more questions, and there she was. Plain as day. Eve Christmas, in the flesh. She offered me tea.”

“Where was she?”

“She just popped round the corner for a cuppa and then stopped in to visit her mother. Holliday forgot about apparition, apparently…” He blushed, the idiot, and Gillespie growled under his breath.

Everyone always forgot about apparition. It was a hard living, being a Wizarding P.I.

The Stolen Diadem
Year 998
"No, Helena. Don't do it!" Hissed Marigold as she chased Helena down the corridor.
"Leave me alone."
Marigold reached out to grab her best friend's arm. Helena spun around with such fury in her eyes that Marigold let go immediately, backing up two paces.
"I have made up my mind. Do not stand against me as I feel so many others have. Professor Ravenclaw has everything she wanted, and what about me? To live in the shadow of that woman is not something that I want."
"T-that... woman is your mother." Utterly shocked at the wrath Helena was displaying, tears welled up in her eyes.
"And as my mother, I shall have it one day. Why not today?"
Marigold's lips trembled. "What are you going to do when she catches you?"
Helena narrowed her eyes. "Nobody will catch me. My cleverness will be far superior to that of my mother's. I shall run where nobody will find me."
"B-but you can't just steal it and run away Helena. You can't."
"Why?" She hissed.
Marigold was speechless. Turning swiftly on her heel, Helena re-commenced her mission.
