Default Charms Lesson 2-The Graffiti Charm

Quote:
Watch Your Step!
Mind the vines and find yourself a seat. Class will be starting shortly.

Neva didn't have a green thumb, but she fancied herself a plant appreciator. At least, she had up until recently. Her classroom, once a sanctuary for spell casting, was now looking more like a scene out of the secret garden. Large vines twist their way along the floor, some working their way up the walls. And while the vine look was a pleasant enough aesthetic, it didn't exactly lend itself well to a space for practicing Charms. Distractions and tripping hazards never would.

The Charms professor stood with her hands on her hips, frowning at a vine that had worked its way right under her desk, causing it to tilt awkwardly. She'd just taken care of this matter the morning before and yet...well, to say she was frustrated would be putting things mildly. Best to tread lightly and find your seat as the board has instructed. Professor P is already in a mood and class will be starting shortly.

OOC: Welcome to another Charms lesson! As always, all SS and Classroom rules apply!

Class has ENDED! Thanks for coming!

Class Progression:
-First Questions
-Second Question
-Spell Reveal and Practice Instructions
-Main Activity
-That's a wrap!

Phoebe's mouth made a perfect little 'o' at the professor's words. Graffiti was art for everyone? That's what it was about? That was very cool, and sort of inspiring. Assuming that someone didn't get arrested in the meantime.

"I think you can memorialize a person or event in a very public way using graffiti. Maybe a community, so the art brings people closer together, or maybe someone who isn't with us anymore."

This lesson was already one of her favorites. Even though it just started, Kinsay could already tell. That's how much she liked it so far. Especially the direction they were going in. Professor P really knew what she was doing. That's why she was a favorite.

"Maybe some graffiti artists like to make stuff that their community can be really proud of - so other people can come see what makes their community so special. Street art can bring whole cities to life." That was a positive thing, right?

And once again, no questions, your honor! She was trying sooooooo hard to restrain herself.

SUMMER FOREVER

Valentina took notes as the professor spoke, finding this lesson pretty interesting. The fact that there were a lot of good sides to graffiti was something that she was learning now. She thought for a moment or two, raising her hand, deciding to answer this time around.

"Maybe.. about people who have made a lot of positive contributions to that neighborhood? It could inspire others to do the same."

Hand up. "It's a good way to attract attention, for sure, so it could mean...uh, tourism, for example. If people flock to the area, business can happen. And where there's business, there is profit. And when there is profit, livelihood happens for the community." shrug. "Profits and revenues sound good to me, professor." Noah has been thinking of doing his own business after Hogwarts, much like what the rest of his family do for a living. But first, pro Quidditch has to happen. He's got plenty of time to learn the ropes, but for starters, he thought his answer was solid. Hmm.

Positive reasons for graffitti? Evan agreed with all the answers being thrown out there, but he could also think of an even simpler one that he wasn't sure he'd yet to hear mentioned. Raising his hand, he waited for his turn, before offering anything in response. "Sometimes adding something bright and cheery can just make people in the neighborhood happy. Giving them something to enjoy looking at in the mornings, when they pass by that abandoned shop or that long open wall space. Because of the enjoyment of looking at it alone, there are some places that host 'street art' festivals where they actually just... allow people to create art for the enjoyment of the rest of the city. Even make demonstrations out of watching people use their craft."

Yes, it could attract tourists like Noah had pointed out. But Evan thought that in some scenarios, it could also just genuinely be about the people already living there.

Huh... interesting ... so were they going to get to graffiti something on the castle walls? But wasn't graffiti like a form of vandalism? Though now that Apollo thought about it, maybe it was legal vandalism? As long as people didn't draw or write anything offensive, was there much harm in it? He listened to his peers a moment, trying to sort his thoughts on the positive contributions that graffiti could mean for a community, blinking at Noah's comment about profits. It was technically accurate but that was quite the link he made!!

Eyes fixing on the vines a moment, he considered the question some more before raising his hand. "Perhaps uh , graffiti could also be used to cover up or distract from the negative aesthetics in the community. Maybe even turning it into an opportunity to take pictures against a fun mural or something. They say a picture is worth a thousand words ... so a fun drawing could be a way to transform a blank canvas into something.. remarkable."

He wasn't sure if that made a whole lot of sense, but hopefully Professor Peralta would get what he was trying to say??

Being given permission to create seemed to contradict the definition of it as something that was usually done without permission. But could it make a positive impact? ”Graffiti can be used for neighborhood beautification and allowing local artists to make an impact on their community by creating a work of art that everyone can enjoy.” Was it really graffiti if it was allowed though? Perhaps some might call officially permitted graffiti simply a mural or something else that described it? Or maybe it was just the exception to the rule that graffiti was usually done without permission?

Art was subjective, and graffiti was a great example of this. While some people thought it was nothing more than an eyesore on a public space, others were able to appreciate the skill and boldness of a piece. Neva was usually the latter, especially if the graffiti in question had a purpose. It was why she wanted to focus the kids in this direction. Art was great in that it could inspire and why not have them imagine ways in which they could inspire using this medium of art? Merlin knew at a school as chaotic as this one could be, a little inspiration and positivity could go a long way.

It just seemed wrong to deface property that wasn’t hers. The thought of defacing the Blaze mansion walls briefly crossed her mind. The word ‘killers’ would work nicely on said walls.

Anyway.

Claudine’s hand went up almost immediately for the next question. “When there’s an issue that needs urgent attention. An example would be to bring attention to animals being neglected or mistreated which in turn would make the relevant authorities to look into the matter.”
"Animal rights is certainly a worthy cause to call attention to," Neva agreed. "I think a piece calling for action in this area would be hard to ignore, especially in a public setting. If the authorities didn't immediately step in, I imagine people would keep referring back to the piece and asking why. It'd keep them talking."

"Graffiti is good for when you want to remember something important, but the law doesn't want to. So if they want to erase whatever is happening in your neighborhood, they'll have to get rid of the graffiti too." Peralta might not see that as a strictly positive thing, considering it was mostly illegal, and neither did Ash to be honest. You could easily spray paint hurtful things wherever you went. But it could be good too... there were worse crimes than spray painting 'have a nice day' or 'treat muggleborns better' on a random piece of sidewalk in Diagon Alley.

"Can it still count as a positive impact if it's not allowed?"
"There are times when the rules are not necessarily in the best interest of the people that are meant to be following them." Neva couldn't help but think back to the war, to the priniples those people were trying to teach the kids... "So I'd say that if the graffiti were calling attention to an injustice or a moment in time worth being remembered so that change could happen, that would be a positive thing, yes."

"It certainly can," Neva said with a smile. "Bright colors, depictions of places or people seen in the community, and representation of the culture of a place can inspire pride and happiness." Miss James was right on.

If people come to see the art, they might stay to experience what else a place has to offer, and that's a great opportunity for a neighborhood to grow."

"Exactly. While graffiti can have a bad rep because it is seen as a way of defacing property, it can also be a way to enhance the beauty of a property. It's important to remember that it has that ability, too."

"Thank you to those who shared. My intention here was to remind you that not all graffiti is bad. Graffiti can bring beauty, pride, a sense of power, a connection to past people or events, or a call to action. It can be used for good and I hope that this is how it will be used in the next part of our lesson." Because yes, they'd be doing a little graffiti of their own today.

"The Graffiti Charm is a spell that creates a spray of paint from your wand. The paint comes out quickly, just like when using a can of spray paint. It also dries quickly, which is a benfit. Another benefit of using the spell is that there is no unpleasant smell of paint that is so often associated with spray paints." Neva had the pleasure of witnessing muggle artists working on a mural and the spray paint smell had been enough to make her walk away. She returned later to see the finish piece, of course.

"To perform the spell, you simply say Pingaerosol followed by the color of paint you wish to create. Pin-gaer-o-sol. So, for example, you might say Pingaerosol Blue. After saying the incantation, you flick the wrist of your wand hand and the paint will start to spray. You want to give a little space between your wand and the canvas you're working on to prevent the paint from dripping and give you more control. You also want to focus, as your intention will control the force of the spray. To end the spell or switch colors, you say finite and then start again when you're ready." Easy enough, yes? "It is possible to be more specific with the shades of your colors, but it takes practice and the ability to picture that exact shade clearly in your mind before casting the spell. It's okay if you don't master that today, but it is something to think about if you're interested in using this spell to create art in the future."

"The paint produced by this spell will remain unless certain cleaning spells are used to remove it, so the artwork you're about to create as you practice will be something you can keep." She moved behind her desk, producing a ridiculously large box of canvases. As she continued to talk, she levitated them to the desks of the students so that each had one. "I would like you to prop your canvas up somewhere in the classroom-please be careful around the vines-and practice this spell. Get a feel for it. Switch colors. Try from different distances. You don't have to produce a picture or word just yet if you don't want." That would come later. "If you have any questions, please raise your hand and ask, but otherwise, you can get started."

OOC: It's practice time! Please have your charrie grab a canvas and practice the spell! Once comfortable, they're welcome to try out different colors! If anyone has a question for Neva, please put 'Professor' in the title of your post! You'll have about 48 hours before class moves on!

After quickly jotting down the spell and what it does, Noah chucked his notes away in his bag, and grabbed the canvas that floated in front of him. To be honest, he didn't mind the Arts. The Mordaunts kept paintings in their private collection, and it was expected of them to know a thing or two about it. Who's who. Who did what. What the painting was about, blahblahblah. Noah had no trouble appreciating it, but to make one? Nah. He did not possess that kind of talent. It was more of Catherine's vibe, even if it was far from watercolour.

Anyway, he was here to learn the spell. It didn't matter if he doesn't have the creative acuity to make a masterpiece. Those kinds of people were pretty rare, anyway. Just behind his desk, he found a blank wall and fixated his canvass on it. "Pingaerosol." Noah carefully enunciated the spell first, and then carving it into his brain, while visualizing what the spell did. Moving away from his canvass, he muttered the spell again under his breath, this time drawing his wand from his arm holster and pointing it at the blank slate before him. "Pingaerosol Teal...Finite...Pingaerosol Yellow...".

PSSSCCCHHHHTTTTTT!!!

"Finite!" hmm. Not bad.

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Ash was a FAN of this lesson. And most art-related charms lessons, actually. She knew exactly what she wanted to make in the end. A phoenix! But first, she figured she ought to get familiar with the spell. she practiced the wand movements(flick of the wrist), and then the words("Pin-gaer-o-sol, Pin-gaero-sol, Pingaerosol? Pingaerosol... blue. No, sky blue. Pingaerosol sky blue. Pingaerosol Pingaerosol Pingaerosol."), and then she dragged a canvas over and tried both together. And then she started spray painting random shapes with random different shades. Black. Navy. Scarlet. Royal purple. Royal blue. The ocean at night. Baby blue. Lavender. White, like a clean bandage. Green like a budding plant. Green like an evergreen. Orange... yellow... ALL THE COLORS THAT ASH COULD IMAGINE. Which was a lot.

Ash raised her hand. "Can we keep these at the end?" For reasons.

Okay, THAT might take her mind off the silly vines!! Scarlett was READY to PAINT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Immediately hopping up, she picked up her canvas and moved to the side, placing it in front of her at eye level. The vines did come in handy in the end, as she used part of it to prop it up. WHAT was the incantation again? "Aerosol. Pingaerosol." Got it.

"Pingaerosol PINK!" Scarlett jumped RIGHT IN and waved her wand dramatically towards the canvas without ANY practice WHATSOEVER. Who needed THAT when they were just GRAFFITI-ING anyWAY. That was the whole ESSENCE of the thing, WASN'T ITTTTTT.

Not really and she knew that, but it was kind of c-- PSSSSSHHHHLRKJGHDLRKJGHKG "WHOAAA!!!!" Scarlett exclaimed as she lost control of the strength of the spray paint coming out of her wand, moving the aim OUTWARDS and AWAY from her canvas.

Default Hi, Scarlett hehe
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Claudine had no hard feelings against graffiti. As far as she saw it, graffiti was fun, creative and expressive. As long as the property being defaced wasn't hers. And she was eager to learn this Charm but first… there were notes to be made which included the advantages and incantation. As for materialising the exact shade of colour she wanted, Claudine aimed to master that difficult aspect someday. And she would. You could bet on that.

Knowing that she was right in her element and this spell was going to be something, Claudine set up her canvas beside Ash. No doubt her little friend was going to enjoy this as much as she was. “Do you mean the canvas or the stuff we crea-” Oh, heck no. This was not happening.

Paint was being splattered on her uniform and in her hair. “Cut that out!’’ Whoever it was doing this had better stop. Claudine had thrown her hands up in defense, the first thing that had come to mind. UGH. When she found out who that incapable student was...

The best part of the graffiti lesson was that it was a much more relaxed medium; he didn't have to worry about his mediocre art skills this time around given the fact that sometimes the point of the art could be messy. Spray paint was harder to control, so tagging usually had a more hap hazardous look to it - at least the casual street art he'd seen around before. The festivals he'd previously mentioned were far more experienced and honed in their craft but... Evan was fine looking like a newbie.

Considering he was one.

Once his canvas had settled on his desk, he picked it up to better settle it in order to start. Hmm. What to do? Random splatters could be fun enough. And then he could experiment more with the spell and how close he'd need to have his wand and everything. He eyed the canvas for a minute longer, before taking a breath and raising his wand. "Pin-gaer-o-sol black!" A small stream of black started coming out, but the result on canvas was... messy. He was clearly standing to close as Professor Peralta had warned, so he took a step back and could immediately see the difference.

But wait... he also must have done something wrong, because was that now PINK on his painting?? "Finite." He glanced at his wand, before turning when he heard Claudine and... blinking. Why was the Slytherin... pink?

Violet had despaired of finding a spot that was completely vine-free and so had set up her canvas in a relatively empty corner and began to try the spell out. "Pingaerosol green!" she called and a fine spray of leaf-green paint came out of her wand. She directed it onto the canvas in a loopy pattern, feeling rather artistic, until she noticed that her pattern was looking suspiciously like the vines surrounding the walls. She abruptly broke of the spell and looked around her to see if anyone else had noticed. Were these plants hypnotizing her? No, surely it was just a coincidence.

Deciding to try another color, something nothing like the vines, she tried again. "Pingaerosol yellow!!" As Violet was working to add the yellow on top of her green, she heard a commotion behind her and turned her head to see Claudine getting sprayed with pink paint by a younger student near her. Not paying attention, Violet didn't notice at first that her wand hand had wandered and she was getting yellow paint on some of the vines next to her canvas.

SUMMER FOREVER

Valentina listened intently to what the professor said. YAAAAY, this sounded like a super fun activity!! She couldn't help but smile brightly as she propped the canvas on her desk excitedly. The professor did say they didn't have to actually create any artwork yet.. which was a relief. Her artistic skills were just.. yeah, no. She did practice saying the incantation a few times before pulling out her wand. Now, let's see how this goes. She took a couple of steps back and pointed it towards the canvas.

"Pingaerosol orange!" She watched in awe as orange paint splattered on the canvas. WOAH. She said, "Finite" a few seconds later, the happiest smile on her face! THIS WAS SO MUCH FUN!!! Now, to try another colour. WOOOOOOT!!

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

”I mean the things we-“

So. Ash was very very confused about why her left arm was pink when she was painting with her left arm. And about why the canvas was turning pink when the color coming out of her wand was blue. But. She didn’t need to be confused to be upset. Claudine looked unhappy —-> Ash looked unhappy too. Her big sister had spray paint in her hair! This was a crisis. She peeked around Claudine to see what was going on... just in time for paint to come for HER. No thanks. No spray paint to the face, please. She moved her hands up just in time to block.

“Finite?” Ash pointed in the direction of wherever the pink was coming from. Did finite work on other people? Ash had never had reason to try.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

UGH.

Claudine was not impressed. Even more so when she realised that her hands as a defense were not doing much. She quickly stepped out of the way and stared down at her uniform. Even though pink was her favourite colour, she didn’t particularly fancy the colour being applied to her uniform this way. Nor her hair. The Snakette glared at the culprit. “Can’t you aim properly?’’ she asked Scarlett quite crossly. A glare was thrown in before she turned her back on the other girl and began to make an attempt to clean the paint off of herself.

“Hopefully she knows how to even use Finite,’’ Claudine remarked to Ash distractedly. “What was it Peralta said? Cleaning spells worked on this stuff?" She tried Tergeo and Scourgify, muttering the incantations softly. There was a hint of anger in her voice; the anger she felt towards Scarlett. “How is my hair, Ash? Can you see any paint anywhere?” As far as Claudine could see, her uniform was okay. If there was any residual paint in her hair, then she would have to take care of it later when she stood in front of a mirror.

“Alright. Let’s get this show on the road.” What was the incantation again? “Pingaerosol… Pingaerosol.” And that flicking motion? That was easy enough. “Here goes nothing. Pingaerosol black.” Claudine did the flick of her right wrist thing and there it was: black paint began spattering on her blank canvas.

It was a beautiful sight.

Post She won't (doesn't want to,I should say) learn...spraying canvas but it might splash?
Arts TRANSPONSTER!

UUUUMMMMMMM.

ALTHOUGH Scarlett had not meant to get paint evvvvvvverywhere, she was NOT done with her artwork, ALRIGHT???

So she sent Ashley a long, hard look because HEY. That was HER spell to 'finite', thank you very MUCH!!!!!!!!!

But fine, whatever. She'd move on, totally ignoring Claudine's angry look. She was used to frowns and bad moods in general, seeing as half her family was like that basically all DAY. Unfazed, she was.

"It's a nice colour." She remarked matter-of-factly to no one in particular. It WAS her favourite colour, and she wouldn't mind having it all over the place for a change. BUT admittedly, she was ready to use a different colour now.

Her second favourite colour.

"Piangero aerosol--" No wait. "Pingaerosol GREEN!!" She said emphatically, with a dramatic wand flourish which, obviously, caused the spray paint to come out of her wand much more forcefully than it should.

Again.

Hehehehe.

Violet snapped out of her momentary distraction, now that the pink paint situation on the other side of the room seemed to be under control, and turned back to her own work. She was momentarily alarmed to see she had sprayed some of the vines with yellow paint, but after watching them anxiously for a few minutes, she decided that it hadn't seemed to affect them any (for now, at any rate...)

She surveyed her work for a minute--it did not look at all like the great artwork she had admired on the sides of train cars or abandoned buildings or fences. In fact, she thought it looked a bit like a mangled sun had fallen into a tropical rain forest. Oh well, art had never been one of her strong points. The important thing was, she had accomplished the spell correctly!

She decided to stop while she was ahead, but decided to add her initials, like she'd seen on graffiti before. "Pingerasol Black!" she announced firmly, and began to trace out the monogram she'd designed for herself years ago, when she'd decided to be an author and wanted something distinctive to write on book signings, someday. A "V" for Violet, and the capital letter "B" coming out of the right hand side of the "V', so that the two letters were joined. She stood back to survey her work--not bad. She was obviously much better at writing letters than she was at trying to draw things. Though now it looked like her initials were so large that they were overwhelming the artwork.

Ash ignored Scarlett's look. As far as she was concerned, she had saved the day and fulfilled her duty to society, sooooo... Scarlett was welcome. Claudine was welcome. Everybody was very, very welcome. Ash didn't bother to clean off her own robes... she didn't mind the pink... she'd just wash it later. "Um, I think your hair is fine, Claudine, except for that spot right by your ear. You'd probably have to look in the mirror to get it." It didn't look bad, to be honest. But it probably felt sticky and gross. "I can get it for you if you'd like." But she certainly wouldn't be doing anything with anyone's hair without permission, considering how she felt about her own hair(nobody better mess with it, ever).

She got herself a new canvas and... "Pingerasol Crimson." It was obvious what was coming next(a phoenix). Nobody better get random paint on this.

Minus a little bit of pink, his work had remained fairly unharmed from the young Hufflepuff, but as an extra safety precaution... he levitated his now wet canvas a little bit further away in order to continue. Once set up at his new area, he looked at the black with pink splatters, before reaching into his bag for a piece and paper and quickly folding into a triangle. Holding it up to his canvas, he lifted his wand again in the opposite and focused on it.

"Pingerasol lime". He was probably being pretty hopeful in trying something so specific, but he was hoping to go for a neon color scheme for his geometric piece. Remembering to have his wand back further this time, lime green sprayed from the ends over the triangular piece of paper. "Finite."

So far so good.

While the students worked on mastering the spell, Neva worked on the classroom walls around them, diligently moving around the pesky vines and grumbling to herself all the while. With each flourish of her wand, the walls began to transform into white brick, creating the perfect place to create art on a larger scale. Go big or go home, right? It was time to use the spell they were practicing to create something positive.

If I could have everyone's attention up here for a moment, please. I know some of you are still getting the hang of this, but for those of you who are ready to move on, I'd like to share what we'll be doing for the remainder of class." Neva gestured to the walls around them, a hint of a smile on her lips.

"With a small group, a partner, or on your own, I'd like you to create a positive message for your classmates to enjoy right here on one of these walls. It can be a word, a phrase, or a picture. My only rule is that whatever you create, it should inspire in some way." She paused, considering. "And I've just decided that I'll leave these creations up for the rest of term, so I'd like you to put some real thought into them before you get going, okay?" She was trusting them.

"If you need a little more time to practice, keep at it, but everyone else is welcome to start figuring out what they're going to make." They could begin.

OOC: Your final assignment is up! Have your charrie (on their own or with a friend(s)) come up with a positive piece to create (word, phrase, or picture) and then put it up somewhere on one of the classroom walls. You'll have until October 28th to play, so have fun! Can't wait to see what the kids come up with!

Claudine shut her eyes and inhaled sharply as though praying for Hufflepuff-like patience lest she jinx Scarlett into oblivion. Seeking patience was exactly what she was doing. “Thank you for your opinion,’’ she remarked, the sarcasm very pronounced in each of her words. True, pink was quite the lovely colour but Scarlett didn't need to know that Claudine agreed. She turned back to Ash, turning her head this way and that so that her little friend and sister could see better. “Behind my ear. Got you. I’ll stop by the washroom after class.”

The seventh year admired the black paint on the canvas. The paint took over the entire thing {obviously the spell had been ended with Finite} and now she pictured blue. Her aim? To create an image of a galaxy. “Pingaerosol blue.” Flick. Blue paint came forward and Claudine quickly moved her wand in a circular motion. Some red paint in there next and it would look near perfect.

Unfortunately, that was as far as she got for Peralta was giving them new instructions. Claudine’s eyes shone when she heard what the next task was. “Want to work on something together, Ash? Got any ideas if you do?”

Class went by insanely fast when one was having so much fun. Glancing up when Professor Peralta asked for their attention, he ended his latest spell and let his wand drop to his side. The most amazing part of this to him was the lack of residue on the wand following what should have been a rather messy spell. It was just interesting how it worked - so much like a spray paint can and yet so entirely different.

Wait. Did she just say they were going to decorate the classroom?? That was entirely fun. But with something motivational? He was... not good at pep talks or being encouraging. But he supposed it wouldn't hurt to do a quote; those he had an arsenal of. In fact, there was one that came to mind from Winston Churchill that seemed rather fitting for Hogwarts. He pulled out a piece of paper to jot it down quickly, to make sure he didn't misspell anything while he was putting it on the wall.

Success is not final.
Failure is not fatal.
It is the courage to continue that counts.

He'd probably want to play around a bit with the way the words looked but... part of him also just wanted to free hand it and see how it came out. It didn't hurt to be spontaneous and just... do things sometimes, did it?

But what colors to work with? Greens, reds and yellows, similar to that of a stop light, seemed fitting to him for it.
