Default Charms Lesson: Gripping Charm (Queritorto)

Today's charms lesson has been planned for the grounds today. Fortunately the time is in the afternoon so hopefully if you forgot and headed to the third floor - when you were greeted with a locked classroom door and a reminder note - you still had enough time to head to the grounds.

There are no chairs waiting for near the edge of the grounds, but wooden benches have been arranged if you need to sit. Although don't get too comfortable because you won't be sitting long. Professor Mancini is standing in the middle of the circled benches, juggling a small kickball (12.7cm size), as she awaits your arrival.

ooc: note that this is NOT your first charms lesson of the term, so your characters should be familiar with Mancini by now (and vice versa). Also, your students would have been instructed to wear comfortable clothes prior to today's lesson. We'll start in about 24 hours from now....

Lesson Progression
* Question ONE: What do you know about the gripping charm? Can be anything from uses to who/when it was invented.
* Mini activity: Incantation/wand movement practice!!
* Main Activity: Climbing trees and egg hunt!
numbers found already: 4, 38, 294, 174, 331

* Followup post

"Queritorto ... Khere-it-or-to," the Slytherin practised the incantation first, concentrating on the pronunciation of each syllable. Then the wand movement, which was a circular movement around each glove. "Queritorto!" she said, while drawing a circle around the left glove with her wand.

... Nope, still felt like a normal glove. It seemed that she needed more practice with the charm.
Leanne observed as one of the younger students practiced the incantation. It was a little tricky in pronunciation, but it seemed as though Jocelyn was getting it. Almost at least. "Looking good there. I think you'll get it in no time." She stated reassuringly.

No offense, just Alfred being Alfred. Though, his house did appear to produce some spineless people on the regular. He did sit up, however, though straddling the bench, so that he was sitting sideways.

The gripping charm? They had already covered this back at Beauxbatons, but everything he thought of about the spell was already said by someone else before it could come out of his mouth. So, he sat there silent, whacking the blue ball away quickly as it sailed in his direction. And cringing a little when that one kid got whacked in the face.

Climbing? Climbing what, the trees? Not that Alfred had a problem with that, really. Just that it was relatively easy to climb trees without a charm. Not that he would know anything about it or anything.

He got up, grabbed a pair of gloves, and returned to his bench, this time sitting on it the correct way. Of course, having already encountered the spell he didn't need to practice. "Queritorto." There, now his gloves had a better grip. And he was bored.
Leanne chose to ignore the comment about a backbone. Because even though he was a slytherin, she was well-versed enough in anatomy to know that even if people appeared spineless, unless there was some underlying pathological condition, as a homosapien, Alfred definitely had a spine. She was sure as school healer, she would have been privy to any pathological conditions students may or may not had.

She instead nodded politely when he sat up a little more and then seemed to lazily practice the spell. She best move on soon to keep any waning interest.

He withdrew his wand out to mimick the circular motion around the gloved hand, Queritorto... Queritorto... After some time he began to feel something constrict in his hand. Did it work? Hm. Interesting.
Nothing more to see here, as it seemed Caes was getting the hang of the spell. "Good, very good," She stated simply.

If only she felt confident in her ability to perform nonverbals. It'd certainly lessen any embarrassment that came with mispronunciation. But. But she just wasn't there yet. So. So yeah.

Instead, she quietly rehearsed. Khere-it-or-to. Khere-it-or-to. Khere-it-or-to. The wand movement was easy enough, so rather than practice it separately, she simply went ahead a cast the spell on each glove, circle her wand around them as she did so. "Queritorto... Queritorto..."
If she wanted help practicing non-verbals, Kinsay would only need to voice those concerns. Leanne sadly had never mastered legilmency and even if she had, it would be an invasion of privacy to use it on her students in general everyday life.

"Sounds good...." she said, when Kinsay practiced aloud.

Practicing on gloves was a good start, especially since the gloves were of the cool type. Jude grabbed a pair and pulled it on; the pair fit snugly on his hands. And yeah. He actually admired his hands for a bit because they looked rather nice with this type of gloves. It was this lesson, in fact, that influenced his love for them and in turn influenced him in using the things when he played the piano as an adult for his future concerts. As for practice, he was already repeating the incantation in his head. The Hufflepuff was worried about his spell work as lately it had been absolutely atrocious.

Eventually, he began saying the words out loud but softly to himself. “Khere-it-or-to. Khere-it-or-to. Queritorto.” A circular wand movement was easy enough. No need to practice that bit.
Leanne watched as Jude put on the gloves, wondering what he was thinking when wearing them. When he eventually got to practicing the incantation, she nodded approvingly. "Sound goods, Jude."

She wasn't even disappointed any longer that they wouldn't be running!

She rushed to grab herself a set of gloves for practice, plopping herself down on the ground near the rest of the supplies as she was SO anxious to start. Wiggling a bit, she pulled out her wand and began to draw the wand movement over her gloves. "Quierototoro!" ... Wait, they didn't seem right. And she was lucky nothing seemed to happen either. "Kharetoto?" The glove just made a feeble movement at that, which she was also fairly certain she was NOT right then. One would think she would have realized by now that just because she had a wand that was good for charms, didn't mean it could make up for poor pronunciation of the booooooring incantations.

Pushing herself up, she moved closer to some other students to observe them for a moment, paying SPECIAL attention to the way they said it. After hearing it a few times from eavesdropping on her classmates, she was ready to try again. She drew the wand movement over her glove and tried again. "Queritorto. Queritorto. Queritorto." She was pretty sure she had the word right this time, and she must have since after about seven attempts it seemed like maybe she'd had some success.
Leanne should have known from the opening feast that she would need to keep an extra eye on this one. She did smile in amusement as in her overenthusiastic excitement she mispronounced it several times before back-tracking. She would have corrected her, but it seemed Vera realized it herself and took a couple steps backward to reassess. "Excellent. Sounds good this time."

Violet wished she could test it on something to be sure, before trusting it to hold her up while climbing.

She glanced over at Caes, who had returned her smile, but just barely. Had she done something to offend him somehow? Or maybe he was just tired of her; maybe he was feeling like he didn't want this friendship to go any further. Violet saw him looking eagerly toward the trees and remembered some of the stories he'd told her about recreational activities at Koldovstoretz, riding trees like they were brooms! She bet Caes would be great at climbing, gripping charm or no gripping charm. She just hoped she didn't embarrass herself in front of him today.
That was it's primary use, although not the only use as charms inventors have come to realize. She did squint at Violet's chanting because it sounded almost right, yet not quite. Maybe she could use it to do Quidditch training with a football in the summer--because yes, by next summer she'd be of age and actually able to do magic at home.

But first, practice. "Queritorto," she muttered several times on her way to get a pair of gloves. What a weird word, Queritorto. She donned a pair of gloves and pointed her wand at one hand. "Queritorto," she said firmly, ignoring her classmates' sounds as she focused on circling her wand around her gloved hand. She flexed her hand, testing the charm. Then something occurred to her.

She raised her grippy, gloved hand. "Professor, is there a special incantation to remove it or do we just use Finite?" she asked. Some spells had special opposites, like engorgio. Though she supposed that was because the action they did had an obvious opposite.
Perhaps she should have convened with Margaret for a more interesting object to use..... since she was disappointed. Not that Leanne would know that except for with reading her expression.

She considered her question a moment. "Good question. You could use finite if you wanted to remove the gripping charm as it's a universal charm for ending charms and hexes, so yes, finite would work just fine." There was other counter-charms but for all intent purposes, finite was fine for basic charms instruction.

"Queritorto....quer-it-or-to...queritorto," He murmured quietly to himself, practicing as he went up to retrieve a pair of gloves from the box. He waited until he'd returned to his spot before slipping the gloves on and considering how his wand felt in each hand. You know, before the whole charm thing came into play. It was the only way he figured he'd know that his spell had worked. Knowing the before feel and then the after. Once he was satisfied with his mini experiment, he took the gloves off and focused on the one for his right hand.

"Queritorto," He said firmly, brow furrowed as he circled his wand around the glove. Had it worked? He hesitated for a moment before actually slipping the glove on, clenching and unclenching his now gloved hand before holding the wand with it. It felt a bit stronger. His grip, that is. But it wasn't the sort of life saving climbing glove miracle he'd hoped for. Maybe he needed to try again..
Leanne was sure she noticed the relief on Luca's expression as she explained the task on hand. She observed him trying on the gloves and then with practicing the spell. "Excellent. Good work."

Once it seemed as though everyone had obtained a pair of gloves and practiced a fair amount, Leanne figured it was time to move on. The strange thing with holding a lesson outside was that it was definitely easy to lose track of time. Fortunately she was aware of no lessons immediately following today's charm lesson so it offered her some flexibility. And yet she didn't want to keep them for a five hour lesson either not that it had been five hours

"Okay let's continue, shall we? If you haven't yet been able to cast the gripping charm successfully, let me know and i can cast it for you. You can test it out on the blue ball here to see if you're able to grip the ball easily." Since the red ball had the gripping charm on it.

"As you progress in your charms studies you might learn another variant of the gripping charm. The Queritorto Charm is used for more solid objects, such as quaffle balls or brooms or even pencils and quills. There's another variant that can be utilized if the object if the object is slippery, usually objects composed of metal. But we're not here to focus on that today. If you wish to learn that one too, you can schedule a meeting with me during my office hours."

Moving on. "As I mentioned we'll be using this to climb today, specifically trees. The gripping charm on the gloves will enable you to easily climb the trees without fear of slipping down. It creates a sort of traction between your hands and the tree. I've taken the liberty of marking the trees you are to climb with a red string, so you are NOT to climb any trees not marked or venture further into the forest than indicated. Unless you wish to spend your next couple weekends with me in detention." She gave a stern look around them all.

"You can cast the gripping charm on your shoes and your gloves to aide your ascent. At the top of the trees you'll find coloured plastic eggs hidden among the branches and leaves. Your job is to collect two or three eggs each. And once you climb down, inside the plastic egg you'll find a number. Depending on your number it will correlate to a prize. Good luck."

ooc: sorry for the delay in getting a post again. I've been lost in mental health feels :3 but should be back to wrap things up with a fun activity!!! Your job is to find no more than three eggs each ... you can use a random number generator to determine a number between 1-300 (no there's not 300 eggs hidden, but it's randomly numbered pieces of paper up to 300). The number will correlate to prizes, which i'll reveal in a day or so.... but ummm you have until Sunday June 12th to complete the activity. Any questions, ask either IC in here or OOC via PM/VM. OH and have fun !!! Don't stress about the random number because you get a prize no matter if high or low number, but try not to reuse a number. So if someone before you gets 15 and you randomly generate 15 as well, please try to be conscious and generate a new number. I'll try to update the first post with numbers drawn as i see them.

“Thank you, professor.” It was always nice to be encouraged, especially when one was having a difficult time with their spell work. Jude went about muttering the incantation a bit more and also in the hope of getting himself well prepped and motivated for the activity, whatever it was going to be. Not that there was much waiting to be done to find out.

Ah. Climbing trees, not walls. Well, in this Hufflepuff’s opinion, that was practically the same thing that Spiderman did. They were only to climb the trees with the red string. Got it, professor. Um… he didn’t need to worry about falling, right? Professors usually took care of the ground when the activity involved heights. He moved close to a tree marked with the string.

“Queritorto.” The circular movement around his footwear was done. But did it work? Lifting his left foot, he felt no sort of resistance from the ground below which told him that the spell was unsuccessful. Repeatedly he tried until finally, the spell finally worked.

Jude turned his attention to the gloves. “Queritorto.” Once again, the wand movement was repeated, and once again there was epic failure. It actually took him about four more tries to get it right {a test was done by him touching the trunk of the tree}. See? His spellwork was still completely off. At least the Hufflepuff was now all set to get started on the activity.

That was it's primary use, although not the only use as charms inventors have come to realize. She did squint at Violet's chanting because it sounded almost right, yet not quite. "Queritorto", it seemed she missed the the first t, so Leanne only hoped Violet would hear it when she emphasized upon it this time.

Violet heard the professor's voice drifting in through her singleminded focus. Oh. Queritorto. Yes. Feeling stupid for not catching it earlier, Violet cast the revised charm several time and immediately noticed that the feeling on her glove was different. Testing it out, she found that now it did indeed grip in a satisfactory manner. But that had been a stupid mistake for a Seventh Year to make. ("Get it together, Violet!" she mentally told herself.)

And now--tree climbing. Which, despite Violet's lack of athletic ability and her (slight and never publicly acknowledged) fear of heights, was actually a skill Violet was rather good at. As long as she didn't have to climb too high. Which, unfortunately, it seemed that she would for this exercise. This would not be as easy as climbing up far enough to hide between the leaves and eavesdrop on her uncles conversations at home.

But, okay. She was trying for a N.E.W.T. in charms, so she had to get this down. "QueriTORto!" Violet cast, making sure to get it right this time. She cast it on her gloved hands and on her feet and then began climbing the first marked tree she came to. Wow! This gripping charm really made a difference. This made tree-climbing amazingly easy! Violet was making it up to the top of this tree in record time! Glancing down to see how far she had come, she immediately realized she had made a mistake there, because the bottom of her stomach suddenly seemed to shoot up into the top. Looking quickly back up to where she was going, Violet tried to put what she'd just seen firmly out of her mind, and vowed not to look down again for the rest of this activity. A few firm swallows cleared up the uneasiness in her stomach and at last, she was at the top. And there, among the small top branches, as promised, was a bright green egg! Violet grabbed it, easily, in one hand and shoved it inside her robe pocket, and then carefully made her way back down, not thinking about how high she had climbed.

Finally she was back on solid earth. Stopping to open her egg, she read: 'Number 4'.

And now it was time to climb. Was it just him, or did it seem that Professor Mancini had only marked the shorter trees? Still, Alfred cast "Queritorto." on his shoes and slipped his hands into the already charmed gloves before looking around for the tallest marked tree. Which was......this one.

Approaching the tree, he looked for the lowest branch first. Seeing that he could easily reach said branch, he grabbed it and wrapped the rest of his limbs around the trunk. Pulling himself up, he straddled the branch and started looking for the next branch. Once he found it, he grabbed it and repeated the process. And yes, he did notice that the charm did seem to be helping. His feet and hands didn't seem to be slipping as much as they normally would be.

This process went on until he was near the top of the tree, where he found one of the plastic eggs-a red one. He shoved it in his pocket and started his descent. Once he was back to the beginning branch, he maneuvered until he was hanging from it and let himself drop. Now safely back on the ground, he pulled out the egg, opened it and read the little slip of paper inside: Number 38.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

And so he began the ascent to the tree. It was actually rather fun, even if Jude started off apprehensively at first. See, Jude was only having second thoughts because he didn’t really trust his magical abilities right now so it came as a very pleasant surprise that he didn’t slide down the tree. Slowly the apprehensiveness disappeared and he padded along quite easily, marveling at the effects of the spell. Out of his peripheral vision, he noted a few fellow students had also gotten start on the activity.

Up, up, up the Hufflepuff went. Soon enough, he came to the top. Light brown eyes scanned around for an egg. There it was! Jude stretched out his left hand to take it. Task accomplished, he descended - slowly because… you know - and once back on the ground, opened up the plastic egg to find the number.

294.

Phoenix hadn't been able to cast the gripping charm successfully in all his practice and not only was it frustrating, but it was also embarrassing. Perhaps he shouldn't have been embarrassed since it was a combined class today with a lot of older students who had more experience, but he was. He felt like the only one who wasn't able to do it yet. Or at least it didn't seem like it. He'd tried to cast the charm on the gloves, over and over, but they didn't seem any different when he tried picking up his books with them.

He had half a mind to just pretend like he'd done it right so as not to draw attention to the fact that he couldn't do it. He could probably climb the tree fine and no one would be the wiser. But it would be even more embarrassing if he fell because he didn't have the charm..

The first year watched some of the older students get started climbing the trees for a moment. He tried on his shoes one more time. "Queritorto!" He lifted his foot to check... and no difference. Sighing, he raised his hand. "Professor, could I have some help?"

Jo smiled when Professor Mancini reassured her that she would get the charm in no time, but the smile faltered when she moved away. The twelve-year-old was nowhere close to casting the gripping charm successfully, even though she felt that she was saying the incantation and doing the wand movement correctly. Perhaps she lacked the magical power that only older and more experienced witches and wizards had?

Anyway, the lesson was moving on and they were about to climb trees - whaaat? - so she decided to ask for help. "Professor, can you cast the charm for me as well? I'll make sure to work on it in my own time."

Default Egg 2: No. 174
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Pocketing the first egg, Jude gingerly tested that the Charm was still strong enough for him to climb the next tree. Since there was resistance from both his feet and hands as he tested them, the Hufflepuff was confident enough to get going once more. He selected another red stringed tree and began the climb.

The movements reminded him a lot of creeping that toddlers do except obvious they were on the ground. Jude shifted here and there to avoid those branches that extended longer than their counterparts; those particular ones got in his face. Not as much as his hair though. Jude was, for the zillionth time, staring through strands that were all over his face. He was quite used to it by this point in life.

After a trek that seemed shorter than the previous, Jude reached the top and quickly scanned around for the plastic egg. After locating it, his steps were reversed until he was on the ground. What number egg did he have?

174.

Leanne watched observantly as Jude and Violet seemed to get the hang of the spell, with Violet finding the first egg that was a number 4. Also, no Alfred she marked taller trees too. BUT what was correct was that she only marked trees that were at the edge of the forest. She didn't anyone having encounters with acromantulas today. So they were getting a variety of numbered eggs, good. But Leanne also knew that there were still many more to be found which was only a matter of time. And the students so far were behaving themselves which was good.

Her attention was drawn to two first years still on the ground though

"Oh, of course. Do you want me to cast it for you this time? Or just talk you through it again?" She asked because he hadn't specifically said he wanted her to cast it. And she knew some students wouldn't want her to do their work for them, while others might have been more than pleased to get out of spellwork.

Oh, maybe Phoenix did want her to cast the spell? Since Jocelyn asked about casting it. "Of course, Jocelyn. I'd also be more than happy to schedule some time to help you in the practice room adjacent to the charms classroom." Without any further hesitation, she swiftly cast "Queritorto" the girl's gloves and shoes.

Just as Jude had returned to the ground with a second egg. "Still got another five minutes or so..." She called out to the class.

ooc: got about 36 hours more to complete the activity.... and we'll reveal what sort of prize your character won Just a reminder that we're using the gripping charm to climb trees and find plastic eggs that have a number from 1-300 to in them. You can find up to three eggs. Any further questions just ask =)

Okay, that actually made him feel a little better that another first year was asking for help. At least he wasn't the only one and wouldn't feel singled out! But when the professor asked him to clarify, Phoenix hesitated. He'd like to be able to do it himself right now, but he was frustrated and felt like he was running out of class time to do the activity that everyone else was doing.

"You can just cast it for me," he answered, after a very brief consideration. "I'll practice it on my own some more after class." And he did mean that. He felt very foolish not being able to cast the spell when nearly everyone else could (even if most of them were older and more experienced than him). But he would practice it till he got it right on his own. For now, he'd appreciate it if the professor could do it for him so he could finish up before the end of class.

Default 2nd Egg: No.331

Violet felt a lot more confident after having made it up and down her first tree without accident--this Gripping Charm really seemed to work! She walked on a bit further until she found a free tree with a marker around it, right on the edge of the boundaries of the class area. Casting another round of the "Queritorto" charm on her hands and feet (sure, it had worked, but can't be too careful), Violet began to climb with more confidence. But when she was about 2/3 of the way up, she suddenly encountered her pet magpie, Machiavelli, escaped from his sanctuary and gadding about the campus without permission, as usual. And now here he was, interfering in her class. "Go away! Go home!" she hissed at the bird under her breath, not wanting to draw the attention of the other students or, particularly, the teacher. Mack's response was to step casually onto Violet's forearm and proceed to walk up the arm, around her neck, and down the other side to a different branch, before giving her a look that clearly said, 'I do as I please, human!' and then flying off. "Argh, why couldn't I have gotten a cat!" Violet said in frustration.

Now her concentration was broken (but fortunately not her grip, thanks to the spell). Pausing another minute to regroup, Violet began the last part of her ascent and finally reached a branch near the top, where she found another egg, this time a deep purple one. "Gotcha," she said as she grabbed it, using a bit too much vigor, because she nearly lost her balance. Fortunately, she was able to grab hold of the tree again, but the egg nearly slipped away. Violet managed to grab it just in time, tuck it away, and then straighten her grip properly, before she carefully climbed back down the tree. Eagerly, she drew out the egg to examine it. "Number 331!" she exclaimed with satisfaction. Only one more to go.

"Of course," She smiled reassuringly at Phoenix. She had no doubt that him and Jocelyn would both get it in no time. But for now they were still young and there was plenty of time for practice in the future. "Queritorto" she cast swiftly at his gloves and shoes so that he get to the activity.

It was just after her casting of the gripping spell for Phoenix that her attention was drawn to a frustrated voice about a cat. And she saw a creature flying off. Huh? She wasn't terribly disturbed because they were having lessons outdoors and so there were all kinds of creatures as a result. But there seemed something familiar about Violet with this particular creature. Perhaps she was just good with animals?

Maybe that was it and it didn't seem to be bothering anything as Violet clamored down with her second egg. So Leanne did the only next logical thing as she hadn't been 100% sure what she saw; she ignored it. And instead smiled reassuringly at Violet. "Nice!"

Default Egg 3: No. 284
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

As with the previous egg, Jude pocketed number two. He then proceeded to check the strength of the Charm, to see that it was still strong or if it needed replenishing. Much to his surprise and delight, it seemed to be enough for one more climb. And climbing again he did.

The third tree he selected was the one on the immediate right of the one he had just descended. His movements obviously mirrored the ones from earlier because one could not manually climb a tree any other way… right? Remember how he thought that the Charm was still strong enough? It turns out Jude was wrong for he could feel his hands sticking less to the tree just as he reached the top. This made him grab the egg hurriedly then commence his descent. Even as he did, he felt his feet not sticking as securely as before. Thankfully the ground wasn’t much farther and he arrived there without drama.

As for the egg’s number? 284.

"Thank you, Professor," she said, thinking that Monday evenings would be a good time for extra charms practice.

Now that she had the gripping charm on her gloves and shoes, Jo could join in the activity. She did not ordinarily enjoy climbing trees - she wasn't a nine-year-old boy, duh - but she agreed that the exercise was an interesting way to test the effects of the charm they learned today. She began to climb the tree closest to her that was marked with a red string, meaning that it had Professor Mancini's prize eggs hidden on top. Her charmed gloves and shoes held on to the trunk of the tree strongly, and helped her to climb up even though she clearly did not have the strength to do so non-magically. She soon found a colourful plastic egg nestled between two branches, and another one hidden below a leaf. Aha!

Depositing both eggs safely in her pockets, the Slytherin climbed back down and opened the eggs greedily. The numbers were ... 84 and 97. So what were her prizes, hmmmMMMmmm?

Phoenix pulled his gloves onto his hands before allowing Mancini to cast the spell onto them as well as his shoes. "Thanks, Professor," he said, grateful that he could get going now. And he would be sure to practice to get it down himself soon enough. Maybe Jocelyn would want to practice with him later.

He paused a moment to consider the trees before him before choosing one designated with a red string. Reaching for one of the lower limbs, Phoenix hoisted himself up, his feet easily climbing up the trunk. It had been a couple years since he climbed a tree, but he noticed how remarkably easier this was with the charm on his hands and feet. This was actually pretty cool.

He slowly reached higher and higher, keeping his eyes peeled for eggs hidden within the branches and leaves. Oh! There was one! Phoenix inched a bit higher then reached for an egg nestled between a fork in one of the branches. With the egg secure in his hand, the first year made his way back down to the ground and opened it up. Hmm... 101. Wonder what prize that would be... and did he have enough time to look for another egg?

"Thanks, Professor," Violet beamed, pushing a stray lock of hair out of her eyes. Good, Professor Mancini hadn't noticed Mack's misbehaviour. That bird had better be heading back to the animal sanctuary and not off to do some new mischief, but somehow Violet doubted it. If she managed to graduate without that bird getting her expelled, or at least detention, it would be a miracle.

But now--one more egg. Violet tried to pick an easy tree for the last one, because she was tired of climbing. She found a likely target, one not too tall (or at least so it appeared from the ground), recast the gripping charm one last time for good measure, and headed up. But although it wasn't as tall as the others, the tree's bark was really quite rough and its trunk was full of bumps and knotholes and jagged broken stubs where limbs had broken off in past storms, so it was really not such a good choice after all. However, it was her last one and she was halfway up already, so Violet thought it best to continue on. "Ouch!" she exclaimed as she grasped a particularly sharp stump, which hurt a bit even through the gloves. But finally she had reached the egg in the top branches--a nice robin's-egg blue coloured one this time. Pocketing the egg, Violet climbed carefully down, trying to avoid any more hazards and eventually reached the ground. Opening the egg, a slip of parchment with the number 119 floated out of it and into her waiting hand. "Done!" she said happily, glad to be finished, and went over to turn in her gloves and display her eggs to the teacher.

As Jude and Violet were finishing up with their egg hunt, Professor Mancini mused about the prizes. Jocelyn and Phoenix managed to effectively use her gripping charm to find two and one egg respectively. To be honest, it wasn't so much about finding the egg as it was about the activity and participation. Even if they didn't find anything but still participated, it would have been sufficient.

Sticking two fingers in her mouth, Professor Mancini let out a whistle to call to their attention.

"Unfortunately class time has come to a close. As far as prizes, if your numbered piece of paper is from 200 to 300, you get a piece of honeyduke's fudge. If your numbered piece is from 100-200, you get a choice of one of honeyduke's handmade candies, if your number. If your number is from 10 to 100, you get a choice of a specialty candy. And lastly, if your number is 1 to 10, you get a Giant Gumball AND one free homework pass." She beamed around this.

"Come get your prizes and then you may go if you have no further questions."

ooc: for easy reference
handmade candies: Nougat (several flavors each day), Coconut Ice, Toffee, Cherry-center Truffle, Dark Chocolate Truffle, Chocoballs
specialty characters Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans, Chocolate Frogs, Licorice Wands, Peppermint Humbugs, Fizzing Whizbees, Ice Mice, Sugar Quills

you'll have about 15 hours to post any catchup posts or departing posts/getting your prize, before i close the thread. Thanks for coming and your patience <3

Jude was pleased with himself and it was enough to lift his spirit somewhat. You know what else helped? Sweets that served at prizes. He looked over the number in the eggs he had collected: 294, 174 and 284. If he understood Mancini correctly, he seemed to be entitled to a piece of Honeydukes fudge and handmade candy. But did he get both? And two pieces of fudge?

He didn't really mind; he just wanted at least one piece of fudge. So the Hufflepuff went to collect his prize then depart.

Just when Jo was about to climb up another tree, she heard the whistle which meant that class was coming to a close. While her competitiveness made her feel disappointed that she could not continue the treasure hunt, she also looked forward to getting a rest. It wasn't just the difficulty in practising the gripping charm, but being around so many people for a long time also exhausted her. She seemed to have won two specialty candies, which cheered her up very much. Collecting two chocolate frogs for herself, she stopped before Professor Mancini to ask her a question. "Professor, you mentioned the practice room earlier, may I use it on Monday evenings?"

Violet was happy enough with her piece of fudge and the dark chocolate truffle candy she selected, but the last one--she wasn't fond of gumballs (too undignified for a seventh year!) and she didn't really want to skip any of her Charms homework this year, either, not with N.E.W.T.s coming up. Still, she reminded herself, she now had more than she'd come in with--maybe she could barter the gumball to someone in the Slytherin Common Room later, for something she really wanted. And even better, there was no more climbing expected of her today! Ending the gripping charm on the gloves and returning them to their place, she bid the Charms professor a cordial, "Goodbye, Professor!"
