Default Charms Lesson 1: Remember Me

today'scharms lesson takes place on a chilly early November morning, but never fear! Professor Marchand has placed several heating charms on the classroom to keep it nice and toasty. As always, there are refreshments laid out on the table in the back of the room. Today's offerings include mini cheesecakes and hot cocoa.

The professor himself stands in his usual place at the front of the room, ready to greet the arriving students with a warm smile. Upon walking into the classroom, you may notice the setup looks a little different today. The desks are pushed together in groups of four, and at the center of each group of desks is a small maze. And that isn't the only strange thing! There is a cage sitting on Professor Marchand's desk; inside are many brightly-colored toy mice. Why does the professor have toy mice on his desk? Does it have anything to do with the lesson? You'll find out soon!

OOC: Welcome to the first OOC Charms lesson of the term! Class will officially start in ABOUT 24 HOURS (1:30 AM EST [GMT -5] Jan. 22) HAS STARTED!

It was bad when not even potions could help the situation. Just saying.

.....Oh, snacks.

Usually, Liv might've been a bit annoyed by food being present in the classroom, but it was getting colder and colder by the day, and that hot cocoa looked particularly inviting. So, yes... she was going to help herself. Dancing over to the table, Olivia resituated her bag and removed her gloves. The gloves were that thick woolen material that made it nigh impossible to carefully maneuver her fingers. In fact, she was sure she'd be making a huge unwanted mess, otherwise... Anyway, hot cocoa with added sugar and just a little bit of coffee creamer was the perfect start to the day. It was lucky she'd had some french vanilla creamer in her bag left over from breakfast. Stirring the contents of her cup, she carefully toted both cup-and-saucer over to a cluster of tables, where a Firstie (Freja) was sitting by herself. It was a familiar setup, reminding her of when she'd volunteer at muggle schools in downtown London. It was popular with kindergarten teachers. As for the multicolored rats and the mazes.... Why was Liv thinking today would be about Piertotum Locomotor?

"How are you this morning, Professor Marchand?" Sip, sip.....and to the First Year lion she'd joined, Olivia grinned especially bright. "Hello, there! I hope this is okay."

Not to worry, her wand was in fact hidden in her robe. Phew, that'd be a bit embarrassing. Freja half-snorted to herself, not allowing the full snort to come out since an old student had decided to sit with her. With... with HER?! Man, she was just so gosh darn popular already. "Hi! Sure, sure, that's cool... hi, what's your name? I'm Freja." It all just came out in such a rush since she was anxious about chatting before class had started.

SPOILER!!: Professor!!

CALLED IT.

She had SO called it. Just not out loud so it didn't really count. They were turning them into REAL mice, oh my gosh, how exciting was that?!

Freja was at the edge of her seat as she watched the professor demonstrate the activity, however her head soon lopped sideways. Was it a real mouse or not? How would they guide a FAKE mouse through a maze using cheesecake? Would it have a real sense of smell? Freja shrugged, but got up to get herself a mouse and a piece of cheesecake. It looked delicious, so she took two. (One for herself later )

Once seated, Freja idly sat for a few moments, then looked sheepishly at the seventh year next to her.

Hi. Help.

"Wanna be partners?" Of course she wouldn't... why would she want to work with a LAME first year?!?!!

Having a maze to herself would be beneficial right now anyway. That meant that she didn't have to wait for her turn. She quite liked that. It would also help her concentrate more if she didn't have to talk to anyone. The blonde smiled, standing up and going to get a small bit of cheesecake. It looked nice, and she kind of wondered if she should get herself some. But she'd had a snack before class, so she decided against it. Didn't need too much food.

She went back to her bench, putting the portion of cheesecake into a corner, before going to get herself a toy mouse. She was glad it was a toy, because she really did not like proper mice. Arriving back at her table, she sat down, and popped the mouse into another end of the maze. Now to get it going. She poked it a little, and it began going around the maze. Perfect. Now to hope it didn't get lost!

Food and drink were the best way to keep her over active self calm for a few precious moments.

So it was with her legs swinging back and forth between bites of cheesecake and sips of cocoa that she listened to the professor explain the use of the little mice mazes on their tables. They would be directing the mice through the mazes?! Awesomeness! Maybe whatever they learned today she could use to help Neptune her rat go through mazes she created for him! Wiggles.

Rylee rose to her feet and got herself a little piece of cheesecake from the table before going to get a toy mouse. A purple one of course, which she had cupped in one hand against her chest so it wouldn't get away. On the way back to her desk however she paused spotting Hattie working all alone. That didn't look like any fun at all. "Hi! Can I work with you?" Cue bright smile.

Shera's eyes briefly rested on Daehyun and she thought about joining him. But then her eyes caught sight of Rylee who she hadn't been spending that much time with lately. That in mind she sent a quick smile and wave towards Daehyun, before she skipped over to Rylee and the older girl (Harriet).

"Hey Rylee, mind if I join the both of you?" her eyes then shifted towards the older girl and beamed at her. "I don't think I've met you yet, I'm Shera, first year. Nice to meet you!"

Because if they were working together then they should at least know each others names.

Zoryn was giving her full attention to the stack of cheesecake cubes on her desk. Her full attention was a rarity, yet here it was. On cheesecake. All this really meant was that she would be stuffing her mouth every two minutes instead of looking out the door in the manner that she typically did when she arrived to class early. The habit was one she started early in her Hogwarts career, as it meant that she could quickly flag her friends down so they'd sit with her before they could see anyone else they knew. A classic trick. But also, ain't nobody got time to stack their group when they gotta stack these cheesecakes... Ja feel?

Fortunately for Zor, it looked like she'd end up with a stacked group anyway! HA. Good things come to those who don't wait to eat cheesecake, it seemed. "Hi Jessa," the Gryffindor greeted the Prefect with a HUGE smile. Like no offense to anyone else, but Jessa Cambridge was probably the smartest person in the ENTIRE school. Which means Zoryn was VERY excited to have the opportunity to mooch off work with her this lesson. Ahem. "Mine too," she agreed. Cheesecake and hot cocoa. That's all Zoryn saw, really.

They didn't have to wait much longer for their table to fill up, as Junia shortly followed Jessa's arrival and Abey came hurdling over soon after. "Hi Abey!" Teammates 'till they DIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEE !!!!!!!!!

And for the record, Zoryn would vote for Abey if he ran for minister. Mostly 'cause she didn't like mornings either... But also because he was good people.

Anyways.

Zoryn didn't even look up when Professor Marchand ultimately decided that it was time to begin the lesson. She was much too invested in the desserts. The best part about Hogwarts was that there were no parents to give you looks of disappointment for spoiling your lunch. Life was too short, y'know?

As for the explanation of the activity, Zoryn heard moooooost of it. Maybe. She did hear the part about getting a cheesecake cube, though! And fortunately for the rest of the team, she had already come in clutch. "I've got a cheesecake!" she lifted a cube into the air before setting it down in their maze. There. That would most likely be her only helpful contribution. But at least it came early on, right?

He was glad, so glad, that his Head of House had chosen to use toy mice instead of real ones, and watched in awe as they all came to life, taking note to practice that spell after class. Letting the instructions sink in, he scurried to the back of the class to fetch a piece of cheesecake, eyeing the rest longingly, already thinking of ways to sneak another bite when the professor wasn't looking. But maybe later on in class. Once back at his seat, he placed the cheesecake in the bottom right corner, and turned to Hanna. "What colour do you like most?" he asked, nodding at the mice. He was also silently suggesting that he would fetch the mouse if she wasn't particularly fond of them.

He would cuddle basically any creature. Even though they weren't true mice. Their squeaking seemed real enough.
Hanna listened to Professor Marchand explain the class for today. They weren't real mice, Hanna could see that, but they would be charmed to behave like real mice!? That was so cool. Every day, she was amazed by SOMETHING. And in one moment, they WERE moving. Animated toy mice. That was so amazing. Hanna's face showed clearly how amazed she was, too. She thought the aim of the task was pretty simple, never having directed a mouse around a maze before... she wasn't sure how well she'd go.

Wait, what? The cheesecake was for the mice? Oops. Hanna had already eaten HALF of hers. But there was a little bit left, and the answer of how to get the mice around the maze seemed obvious. They'd cheesecake them around! After watching Professor Marchand demonstrate what they'd be doing, she thought she understood.

"Uhmmm..." she said to Daniel, thinking. "I don't mind. Maybe purple! It's red and blue mixed together." Because he was a lion and she was an eagle. They were quite cute, weren't they? "I'll get some more cheesecake," she offered, and went to grab two more. Too bad they weren't ALL for the students.

"I guess I'll go get us a mouse and some cheesecake," Maxton said to the group at his table apprehensively. Group work wasn't his cup of tea but he didn't want to be completely anti-social either.

He picked a bright pink mouse and a healthy sized portion of cheesecake -maybe there would be some leftover- before returning to the desk. Hopefully none of them were scared of rodents... The Professor confirmed they weren't real but you never know.

Max set the mouse and dessert down on the desk and peered around at his desk-mates. "Anyone wanna go first?"
Starting with an activity? Well, that was good. Her attention was piqued and Natalie paid attention to the instructions given by the professore. The mice weren't real - that was good because they probably would have freaked her out otherwise. Natalie didn't like... furry things.

Natalie nodded at Maxton as he got up and got the supplies. She watched him come back with the pink mouse and the cheesecake.

"Maybe we should move the cheesecake through the maze first so the mouse can follow the scent," she suggested, moving to kneel on her chair so she could see the maze better.

Abey's arrival rounded out their group and truth be told, the sixth year was pleased he'd joined them. He received a hand squeeze in greeting and then directions were being given, ones that confirmed her suspicions. It made sense that repetition and a good incentive would allow the mouse to make it through the maze time and time again. What that had to do with charms, she didn't know. Not yet, at least.

The cheesecake actually looked pretty good and Junia found that she was hungry just thinking about it, though she couldn't do much about that now. Instead she gave Zoryn a smile for being on the ball and moved to get up. "I'll get the mouse, then. You guys talk strategy." Something told her Jessa would have a plan. She seemed the type.

...

She returned a few minutes later with a purple mouse, one that was squirming in her hands. "What's the plan for this little guy or girl?" And should they give it a name?

While this seat was just a plain old normal seat it was comfortable enough to almost make Théo close his eyes. But nah he didn't want to get in trouble right now. Also, where did this maze come from that was on his desk.

He smiled back at Magnolia as she joins this half a group.

"Hey Magnolia"

Oh class was starting and well he felt that was more what was the word where it asked but you aren't supposed to answer the question because he was so not ready to learn. Wait there was mice at his desk too. Whoa nevermind he did even see that there was a maze in front of him so he was losing it.

"Uh ill go get the cheesecake if you want to get the toy mice??"

Less walking for both of them. Tho he was kind of being unfair since right after he said that he went and picked up two cheesecake cube things.

All Good!

Skylar may have side-eyed Vivian a moment at the sweater she was wearing over her uniform. Because of course she knew who's sweater it was, which is what amused the snake captain so much. Not that she would object or complain she actually probably still had one of Brent's old sweaters buried in the bottom of her trunk that she couldn't bear to part with, along with the bracelet he gave her for Valentine's Day, so. Anyway, Head Boy was certainly enjoying the cheesecake, to which Skylar might have been about to pick up and sample some when Professor Marchand was starting the lesson.

And when Marchand started the lesson, Skylar was just about grateful she HADN'T taken a bite of the Head Boy's cheesecake, because it seemed it had other purposes than for them to indulge in. But apparently he hadn't cared if they did consume it, it was just really meant for the fake mice it seemed. Watching as he demonstrated, it seemed as if it was a simple enough task to manage. Flicking her wand with a non-verbal summoning charm because it was one of the charms she'd mastered non-verbally for another cheesecake from the refreshment table, she set it at the top right corner, as demonstrated. And used the tip of her wand to sort of guide the mouse toward the cheesecake.

Okay, that was actually kind of confusing; she was getting confused with the maze so she couldn't imagine the mouse. "Huh, maybe we should have planned out the maze first....." she said thoughtfully to her tablemates. Was it too late?

Did real mice eat cheesecake? Night knew they liked sugary stuff, so she thought it might make sense. She sat down next to Emmalyn and Daisy, happy to be included.

Quote:
“Want to work together?” She asked Daisy and Night. “I’ll start first, if that’s okay with you.” Emmalyn placed her cheesecake at the end of the maze and gently dropped her little pink mouse at the start. “I’ll call you Rose. Now, you need to run this maze as quickly as you can, Miss Rose. No stopping. There is a special treat for you at the end.” She wondered how much the spell Professor Marchand put on the mice would make them behave like real mice.
Night immediately liked the way Emmalyn interacted with the mouse. "Go, Emmalyn!" She cheered. "Go Rose!"

I'm dreaming with my eyes wide open

What a fun mini activity! Garreth had watched intently as the professor explained and demonstrated the first task of the day, and without hesitation collected his mouse and cheesecake. Returning to his table, he glanced around the classroom and made note of the fact that he was one of the few students sitting alone. Considering what the professor had said about sharing mazes, he thought it best to try to seem as inviting as possible, just in case anybody wanted to join him at the table. He let out a sigh and wondered what his old friend Azura was up to. It was only the sensation of his little, green mouse squirming gently in his hand that brought him back into the class. Shooting a glace down at the tiny enchanted creature, he adjusted his tie and took his seat.

The task seemed simple enough, even without magic, but the unpredictable nature of a mouse's attention span and the less than cooperative attitude it seemed to be taking to his instructions made the whole ordeal considerably less simple. Despite these difficulties, Garreth was slowly beginning to get the hang of nudging his rodentious colleague in the right direction using the tip of his wand. Before long, he'd managed to lead the mouse all the way to the cheesecake! Time to reset and try again.

Once more, he gently placed the mouse at the beginning of the maze, stealing a cheeky nibble of cheesecake while he was at it. "Let's hope you catch on a little quicker the second time around." he smirked at the mouse and began the second attempt.

This was practically charitable of her, right? "Hullo, all. Ready to take on the world? Or at least... a small mousy world?" She dropped into the open chair.

Take on the world? No way. "Too tired for the whole world, Katy." That was the best reply he could muster, unfortunately. He sipped some of his cocoa. Maybe the sugar would kick in and wake him up.

Gaston stood near his desk at the front of the room, doing one last quick count of the toy mice before the students arrived. Good, it looked like he had more than enough. He finished counting just as Miss Macindoe arrived and smiled at her. “Good morning, Miss Macindoe,” he returned her greeting.

Ah, here was the Head Boy! Gaston beamed, returning Mr. Salander’s wave. “Good morning, Mr. Salander.” He inwardly chuckled as he watched him make a beeline for the refreshments, but what the boy said next had him laughing out loud. “Well, maybe they’ll find out what they’re missing soon,” he said with a wink.

Mr. Yoon was next to arrive, and he too received a beam from the professor. “Hello, Mr. Yoon,” he replied, his bright blue eyes following him to the refreshment table. Somehow he had a feeling the kids would enjoy today’s menu!

And here was Miss Diggory, early as usual. Not that Gaston minded, of course; quite the opposite. He admired her punctuality. Her enthusiastic greeting never failed to make him smile! “Good morning, Miss Diggory!”

Oh, here was Rose’s little cousin Hanna! Gaston had been wondering when she might show up. He beamed at her, but his expression turned slightly concerned when he saw all the layers she had on. Was the classroom too cold? He was about to ask her about it but saw she was taking some of the layers off. It looked like she was warm enough after all. Good! “Hello, Miss Newton,” he greeted, giving her an extra beam for getting through his name without stuttering.

Miss Atwater was next to arrive. Gaston smiled as he watched her enter the class, and his smile grew even wider as she thanked him for the snacks. “Good morning, Miss Atwater,” he replied. “You’re very welcome; glad you like them!”

Miss Swann came in moments later, and she received a beam from the professor. “Good morning, Miss Swann,” Gaston replied brightly. He watched as she found a seat, slightly surprised that she hadn’t gone for the refreshments. Oh well, maybe she just wasn’t hungry this morning…

Here was the Slytherin prefect! Gaston returned Miss Fairfield’s smile with a warm one of his own as she arrived. “Good morning, Miss Fairfield,” he greeted.

Was it just him, or did Miss Salim look a little… tired? Or at least, Gaston hoped that was all it was. Not that he could blame her. He wasn’t exactly a morning person himself, but teaching and schedules and all that good stuff. “Good morning, Miss Salim,” he said with a warm smile.

Miss Simm came in next, and Gaston couldn’t help but beam at the sight of her smile and confident strides. That was the kind of attitude he liked to see! Blink, blink. Professor Sir? That was a new one for him, but he wasn’t fussed about the greeting. He’d been called much worse! “Hello, Miss Simm,” he replied.

Another one of his Lions arrived, and Gaston smiled at Mr. Montmorency. His expression changed slightly at the sight of the boy’s yawn. Sorry about the early class time! Maybe the cocoa would wake him up a bit? “Good morning, Mr. Montmorency,” he greeted.

Here was another student immediately drawn to the refreshments. Gaston was not at all surprised but still pleased. Miss McLaughlin’s bright smile earned her an equally bright smile in return. “Hello, Miss McLaughlin,” he replied.

Another smiling student arrived; Gaston was pleased. It did his heart good to see his students in a good mood! He was a tad concerned when he saw how bundled up Miss Paton was, though. Were his heating charms wearing off already? “Good morning, Miss Paton,” he greeted. “Are you warm enough?”

Mr. Carden was next to show up, and Gaston eagerly returned his smile and nod. “Hello, Mr. Carden,” he said. He noticed the boy looking at the maze. Well, he’d find out what it was for soon enough!

Gaston returned Mr. Meriwether’s wave as he arrived and, in typical fashion, headed straight for the refreshments. “Hello, Mr. Meriwether,” he greeted with a smile. He chuckled to himself as he watched the boy piling cheesecakes on his arms. Was he going to save any for the rest of the class? “You’re most welcome,” he replied upon being thanked for the snacks. “Nice use of the levitation charm, by the way!”

Miss Phillips was the next to appear, and she received a bright smile from the professor. He was a little surprised she opted for some cocoa but wasn’t bothered by it at all. That was what it was there for, after all! “Good morning, Miss Phillips,” he replied. “I’m quite well, thank you for asking. How are you?”

Here was another Gryffindor! Gaston half-expected Miss Spinnet to make a beeline for the food but was pleasantly surprised when she greeted him first. “Good morning, Miss Spinnet,” he said, beaming at the quidditch captain.

So the Gryffindor parade continued! Gaston smiled at Mr. Carter as he arrived. His eyes followed the boy as he helped himself to a cheesecake and cocoa. “Hello, Mr. Carter,” he returned the greeting.

Gaston wondered if the next person to arrive was going to be yet another Gryffindor. Nope, Miss Cararro broke the Gyrffindor streak. Not that the professor minded at all; he was glad to see her. He smiled, returning the girl’s nod. “Good morning, Miss Cararro,” he replied. “You’re most welcome; glad you like them!”

Gaston’s bright blue eyes followed Miss Valla as she entered the room. Blink, blink. He was somewhat used to compliments on the refreshments, but he wasn’t expecting a compliment on the mice. That was a pleasant surprise! “Hello, Miss Valla,” he greeted her. “Thank you.” He watched the waves and hair flips she was giving people, unsure whether to be amused or appalled. They weren’t going to have a repeat of the Hufflepuff table incident, were they?

Miss Primeaux received a beam from the professor as she arrived. “Hello, Miss Primeaux,” Gaston replied, returning her wave. His smile grew as he watched her head for the refreshments.

Gaston eyed Miss Cambridge with slight concern as she appeared. She looked tired, even more so than normal for a morning class. He immediately wondered if she was alright, but he chose not to draw attention to her by asking. “Good morning, Miss Cambridge,” he greeted her with a small smile. He couldn’t help but overhear the comment she made to Miss Spinnet, and his mood instantly brightened. He hoped this lesson would hold her interest!

Miss Botros came in next and appeared to be interested in the mazes on the desks, so much so that for a moment, Gaston thought she might forget to say hello to him. He was pleased to see that didn’t happen! “Good morning, Miss Botros,” he replied, smiling as he returned her curtsey with a deep bow.

Gaston beamed at Miss Velasquez upon her arrival. Was it just him or did she seem… excitable today? “Hello, Miss Velasquez,” he greeted, his eyes following her to the refreshment table. Hopefully the sugar wouldn’t prove problematic for her…

And here was another student heading for the snacks. Gaston was sensing a pattern here. He chuckled a little to himself. He was beginning to think these kids only liked him for his snacks! He smiled as he saw Mr. Dooley holding up a cheesecake. “Good morning, Mr. Dooley,” he replied. “Thank you; I’m glad you like them.”

Here was Mr. Botros! Gaston beamed at the boy, but his face soon fell. He couldn’t help but notice that he seemed a bit… fearful. He watched as he made a beeline across the room, and for one wild moment, he half-expected him to head for the refreshments. That didn’t happen; instead he went for Junia. Gaston sent him a sympathetic look, and the thought crossed his mind to rush to the boy’s side and try to comfort him. But he decided against it. The last time he did that, it didn’t end well. Instead, he returned the boy’s greeting with an encouraging smile, “Good morning, Mr. Botros.”

Gaston couldn’t help but notice Miss McKinley’s lack of a greeting and was slightly taken aback. That wasn’t like her! Was something wrong? Maybe she was just distracted… Nonetheless he greeted her with a warm smile, “Good morning, Miss McKinley.”

Here was another sleepy-looking student! Gaston smiled sympathetically. He should probably think about scheduling his lessons a bit later in the day! “Hello, Mr. Muir,” he returned the Ravenclaw’s greeting; the boy’s next words earned him a beam. “I’m glad to hear it!”

Oh, goodness! Another sleepy person! That was it! Gaston had made up his mind to avoid morning classes whenever possible from now on, but for now, they’d just have to make the best of things. Hopefully the students would wake up soon… He smiled at Miss Dixon as she spoke to him. “Good morning, Miss Dixon,” he replied.

Miss Toussaint arrived, and Gaston was pleased to see that she seemed interested in the maze and toy mice. He beamed, returning her wave. “Good morning, Miss Toussaint,” he said. The compliment took him a bit by surprise but was no less appreciated. “Thank you!”

Miss Dalgaard-Volkova also received a beam from the professor when she arrived. He was slightly shocked when she opted for some cocoa – he knew she didn’t often take food from professors. “Good morning, Miss Dalgaard-Volkova,” he greeted her with a big smile of his own. “You’re quite welcome!”

Gaston glanced at his watch; almost time for class to start. He decided to give the students another moment or two to arrive… and he was very glad he did, as Miss McNally came in. “Good morning, Miss McNally,” he replied, smiling. His eyes followed her to her seat, and he noticed her looking at the cat toys on the desk. Good, he was pleased that she appeared curious.

Miss Walsh appeared soon after, and Gaston eagerly returned her smile. “Hello, Miss Walsh,” he said, watching as she took a seat. He noticed she too appeared interested in the maze and mice. It would only be a matter of time before all would be revealed!

Here was Mr. Toussaint – just in time! Gaston couldn’t help but notice that the boy’s smile looked a little tight, and he was immediately worried. Was something wrong? He’d have to ask later… he’d have to start the class soon! For now, he returned the boy’s smile with a sympathetic one of his own and said, “Good morning, Mr. Toussaint.”

Mr. Tamesis arrived right in the nick of time, and Gaston gave him a warm smile upon his arrival. "Good morning, Mr. Tamesis," he greeted.

Was Mr. Tamesis the last to arrive? It appeared so, but just in case, Gaston gave the class a few moments to talk amongst themselves as he waited for more stragglers. A quick check of his watch showed it was 9:00 on the dot. He aimed his wand at the door and it closed with a quiet click.

Taking his usual place at the front of the room, Gaston addressed the class, "Good morning, everyone! I hope you're all ready to learn..." He waited a minute for the students' attention to turn to him before continuing, "Today we'll be doing things a little differently and starting with a mini activity."

He moved over to the cage of toy mice on his desk. "As you saw when you came in, these are not real mice," he said. "They will be enchanted to behave like real mice for use in today's lesson, but I've waited until now to do so so you can see for yourselves that there will be no creatures harmed in the activity." He knew many of his students cared about creatures - and he was something of an animal lover himself - so he didn't want them to worry!

He pointed his wand at the cat toys and cast a nonverbal Piertotum Locomotor; the brightly-colored mice began squeaking and scurrying around in the cage. "We will, as some of you may have already guessed, be using these mice in the mazes on your desks," he explained. "For now, your task is to guide a mouse through the maze without magic. That part will come into play a bit later on, but it's important that the mice run the maze on their own first. Otherwise, the spells we're learning won't be effective."

He gave a few moments for the information to sink in before going on, "First, collect a mini cheesecake from the refreshment table - this is for the mouse, not yourselves -" he added for those who were wary about taking food from the professors. "- and place it somewhere in the maze. Then come up to the front and pick out a mouse. You can pick any color you want, but please try to be careful not to let it escape. Place your mouse at the opposite end of the maze, and guide it through to the cake like so..."

Gaston gently picked up a blue mouse and moved over to the Head Boy's group. "Mind if I borrow your maze for a minute?" he asked Ace, Skylar, and Vivian. He summoned a cheesecake and placed it at the top right end of the maze; then he turned the mouse loose in the bottom left end, gently coaxing it along when it got lost or confused. It eventually found the cheesecake and nibbled away contentedly.

While the mouse was eating, he addressed the class again, "If your mouse finishes the maze before time is up, run it through again, and make sure you put the cheesecake in the same place each time. It's important that the mouse remember the maze and where the cake is. Run your mouse through the maze as many times as you can, but I'd like everyone to complete it at least once." He paused a moment. Had he forgotten anything? Oh yes! "You may work in your group or alone, if you prefer, but you may have to take turns using the maze in that case."

He removed the blue mouse from the maze and waved his wand to clear any cheesecake crumbs that may have been left behind before returning it to the cage. "If you need help or have questions, just raise your hand and I'll come to you. You have about twenty minutes to do the mini activity, starting... NOW!"

OOC: Sorry for the delay in updating! My laptop wouldn't cooperate while I was typing this. Class has now OFFICIALLY STARTED. Feel free to jump in any time; just act like your charrie's been here all along. Late arrivals will lose points. As Gaston said, all you have to do is guide one of the mice through the maze to find a piece of cheesecake as many times as you can WITHOUT using magic. He and I will be checking in periodically. If you have a question, please indicate in the title of your post. You have ABOUT 72 HOURS (6:00 AM EST Jan. 25) to do the mini activity.

Well that was nice of Maxton, because Finn totally wasn't going to put the effort in to actually get up and walk to those places. He was going to Summon them or bust. "Thanks, dude," he said to Maxton's back. And did he want to go first? Eh.. not really? But actually, Natalie had a decent idea. "Er... is that cheating? I mean I think it's a great idea.. does that count as guiding the mouse through? I vote it's fine." And of course he didn't wait for the others' opinions.

He grabbed the cheesecake bite and started sliding it around the maze. Left, right, left again, straight... until finally it came to rest on the other side. He left it there and looked at the others. "Mouse time, I reckon." He grabbed the pink toy and set it in the place where he'd started the cheesecake, then sat back in his chair. Your turn, guys.

"That's a clever thought," Katy came up on her knees as well, leaning in over the maze to see if she could spot the path through it for herself. How could they expect a mouse to do it if they couldn't do it themselves? Finally, she spotted the path she thought they should direct the mouse.

But who would do it? "If you set up the mouse, Max, and you drag the cheesecake, Natalie, I'll do the nudging along." Since she had a clear path in mind. "I'm Katy, by the way, and I'm sorry if I seem bossy." But it was just that she knew how she thought things ought to go.

Zae was like is this a game of the muggle board game called mouse trap except they were using real mice? Yup it seemed like it. Not that she minded it, it was a cool activity all in all. It was clever really. After Zarina ate her two cheesecakes she was full and would now share with her fellow mouse. After the professor ended his explanation of the lesson, she went up and got her cheesecake and then went to the other desk to pick up her companion. Which color to choose? She saw a black mouse and grinned. "Your the one.." she told him and picked him up gingerly yet careful he wouldn't slip away.

The slytherin walked back to her desk and began to think of ideas. How was she going to get this mouse through the maze? It is not like the cheesecake had a strong scent. Did it? She lifted the cheesecake to her nose and sniffed it. Nahh not really. "Hmm how am I gonna get you across that maze?" she talked to her fellow furry friend. All excellent questions.

Silently giggling at Hanna's suggestion for the colour of their mouse, he nodded in agreement and stood up once again to walk to the cage of squeaky mice, catching sight of Shera waving at him, to whom he'd waved back before picking up a purple mouse. He was careful not to drop it or let any others out, and even cradled the purple one carefully in his hands as if it were real. It looked real - well, minus the colour - so he was going to treat it as such.

Once they were back at their seats, Daehyun with the mouse and Hanna with more cheesecake, he looked at her with a whatever happens, happens face, before releasing the purple mouse at an entrance in the top part of the maze, opposite from the corner he'd previously dropped the cheesecake, and the mouse took off.

He was anxious. How were they going to lead the mouse if it didn't find the cheesecake on its own?

Junia's approach at the table earned her a sleepy smile from the Ravenclaw. "Not at all." Why would she mind? Junia had two things going for her being Abra's cousin and Astrea's friend. Jessa had no reason to not want to work with her and from what she'd seen, the girl seemed nice enough. Seconds later, speaking of the devil, Abra busted over to the table looking like there was a nundu on his tail. The young girl rubbed at her eye, snickering just a bit but he too got a smile.

If you asked her, this was a pretty good group. No complaints here.

Jessa rested her head against the table, trying her best to listen to the Professor as he began the lesson. He was using....a lot of words and half of them had come in through one ear and exited through the next. Occasionally her eyes drooped in an attempt at closing until the Professor got far enough into the gist of whatever he was saying to peak her interest. This WAS going to be like an experiment!

The Prefect forced herself back up into a sitting position, rubbing restlessly at her face in an attempt to become more wakeful. They needed to get a rat through a maze. Alright then. As it so happened, Jessa had a lot of experience with test subject manipulation thanks to all the experiments she ever ran up in her lab. Oh look! Zoryn already had the cheese thingie and Junia was getting them the rat. In the mean time, she looked to the maze again, forcing herself to be more alert so she could figure a plan. That charm he'd used, much like the animation charm, the subjects actions were based on intent...--

"I got it." Jessa reached into her bag for a marker, holding it out to the group before taking the rat from Junia. The incantation already on it? She took it off with a simple, non-verbal "finite". "We'll need this little guy doing our bidding, not his." She explained. "One of you draw a line from here," A finger reached into the maze, pointing to the spot they would start the mouse at, "to here." Where she expected the cheesecake to be placed. Basically, someone was now in charge of figuring out the maze. "Then," She continued. By now, it sounded more like she was talking to herself than to them but it was audible all the same. She cast a silent 'excito animans' to get it moving again. It was the spell she was much more accustomed to and did it really matter which she used if the Professor didn't hear it anyway? "We rig it to follow the colour. When we put it into the maze, it'll follow the marking all the way." That was the intent she'd focused on when re-animating it.

"Just get the line big and noticeable so it can't miss it." Technically, this wasn't using anymore magic than he'd used. The rat would be doing all the work.

Patrick looked at the three empty desks in his cluster, shrugged his shoulder all before realizing it wasn’t so bad. He could easily run the maze a few times with his pretend mouse while the others had to share. Rising, he went to grab a mouse that he could put in the maze with his cheese cake pieces that he had left on the table. Setting the mouse inside he set the cheese cake on the other side of the maze in a little nook.

His Mama had talked about students doin this kind of thing at college, he wondered what results they got. As he watched the mouse run into the wall he rolled his eyes, this was going to be a long twenty minutes. As he got to thinking about it he started to wonder what did mice and mazes have to do with Charms? He shook his head and watched the mouse finally start to head in the direction of the cheese cake, which surprised Patrick.

Ahhh now thats the "live" mice the Professor was talking about, the Curly Top watched with great interest as Marchand animated the once-still figures. That spell was something that held his interest and was still trying to cast one that wouldnt just bog down after a few seconds. He nodded as the man asked for their maze to demo, although he was a bit crestfallen when the Professor cleaned up their maze after. Dang, wouldve been nice to get half the work done for them innit?

Ok so they had to do this themselves now? Ace volunteered to get them their ickle mice up front, then went to the back to get a few mugs and a plate. Makeshift mice cages see? Now they can focus more fully on the maze and not getting distracted in keeping the squirmy little things from escaping.

By the time he got that all done, Skylar has started working on the maze. He leaned forward as he regarded the maze thoughtfully. Finally he spoke "You know, creatures use all of their senses when hunting for food. Most of the time they smell for it before they can see it." He took a cheesecake-- which was perfectly edible for humans, its just for the paranoid ones that the Professor had to sell the idea a bit more-- and placed it at the corner of the maze then started to reverse hop it throughout the path, leading to where the mice would be placed at the start. "There should be some cheesecake essence on that path now that the mice should find it easier to detect, easier to make them follow and repetition should make it routine." Makes sense yeah? At least to real mice it would.

He replaced the cheesecake back to one corner and Skylar's mouse at the starting point "Try it now?"

Olivia Holden had been having an off day. When she had entered the room prior to the start of the class, she had simply smiled at Professor Marchand and tilted her head in greeting. She was exhausted. So so so exhausted. Anyone could see it from the dark bags under her eyes.

Fortunately she hadn't fallen asleep yet thanks to her filled coffee mug.

Vi saw Zarina speaking to her mouse. Was the Slytherin trying to comfort said creature? wondered Vi as she, intrigued, watched the interaction between the black mouse and the She-snake. Hmm.. She continued to watch the girl for another minute before deciding to join her. "Mind if I join you?" she asked, offering a small smile. She could def help with setting up the maze for Zarina's mouse friend to go through.

Out of the corner of her eye (and past the Ace, Vivi, and Skylar trio), Vi spotted Patrick by himself. She waved to him. "Hey! Want to come join us?" she asked with a grin. Perhaps they three of them could work together?

Once Daniel was back it was time to put the purple mouse into the maze. "Aww it's so cute," Hanna said. It really was. Even though it wasn't real, but even toys could be cute. Hanna watched as the mouse ran around, but it didn't quite go towards the cheesecake. It looked like it was SNIFFING around, like it knew there was cheesecake, it just didn't know how to get it. Hanna looked up at Daniel and then back to the mouse. She gave it a little directional prod towards a little gap that would lead it to the cheesecake. If it kept taking the right turns, that was.

Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

Gaston wandered between the groups of desks as the students started working on the activity. Most of them had already started, but he noticed a few people (Hattie, Sheraand Rylee; Theo and Magnolia; Olivia and Freja; Diandra, Bel,Alessandro, and Cameron) still forming groups and dividing the work. That was fine, they still had plenty of time. He noticed Mr. Dooley struggling to guide a mouse on his own, but before he could offer help, Miss Holden was inviting him to join her and Miss Cararro. He gave the Gryffindor prefect a very appreciative beam.

He couldn't help but smile at the name one group (Emmalyn, Night, and Daisy) gave their mouse, and for a brief moment, he wondered if they'd deliberately chosen that name to remind him of his wife. "I like the way you're handling your mouse," he said. "Nice name you picked for her, too!"

Mr. Yoon and Miss Newton were also being very gentle with their mouse, which Gaston was very pleased to see. "Great start, you two! I'm sure it'll catch on soon."

His head suddenly whipped around as one of the mice went flying across the room... and was caught by Mr. Meriwether. Gaston grinned a little. Well, that was one way to get a mouse, and he technically didn't say they couldn't use magic to get the mouse, just not to guide it with magic.

It was interesting to see the methods the students came up with to guide the mice through the maze! One group (Natalie, Maxton, Finn, and Katy) had come up with the idea to move the cheesecake through the maze and create a scent trail to follow. He beamed as he passed. "Nice teamwork! I like your strategy!"

It seemed another group (Ace, Skylar, and Vivian) had the same idea, and Gaston smiled as he saw the Head Boy moving cake through the maze. "Good thinking!"

He looked around the room and saw Mr. Kenway having success in guiding his mouse, but he was a little concerned when he saw the boy's wand. He wasn't using a spell to guide it through so quickly, was he? For now, he'd give him the benefit of the doubt. Well done, Mr. Kenway!" he said, his mind searching for a nonconfrontational way to ask why he was using his wand. "What method are you using to guide your mouse?"

Then Gaston's attention turned to another group (Zoryn, Abra, Junia, and Jessa). It looked like they were off to a promising start, but then he overheard Miss Cambridge's comment about needing the mouse to do their bidding. He had a strong suspicion she was using magic on the mouse, but he was unsure how to react. The rules of the activity needed to be followed, but he didn't want to discourage outside-the-box thinking. He decided he needed to learn what exactly she had in mind first. "Good start, you four!" he said in a calm, nonconfrontational time. "How do you plan to get your mouse through the maze?"

OOC: You still have JUST UNDER 50 HOURS to do the mini activity.

Kye had to admit, she didn't know what method would work best for getting an enchanted toy mouse through the maze, but maybe she'd have an epiphany partway through? Or Cassie would?

"I don't mind trying first," she offered. She put a piece of cheesecake at one part of their maze and dabbed her finger in a bit of it. Placing the purple mouse on a different end, she put her finger by its nose so that it could get the scent.

"I wonder if that will be enough to get him through... C'mon little guy... C'mon..." she thought aloud. She let him sniff for a little, moved her finger along the path to get it started, and withdrew. She dabbed a little of the cheesecake on her finger again, and moved it along in the correct direction. The mouse was a little slow to catch on, but at least he was moving! And if they could get it to find the cheesecake this first time, maybe it would get easier with repetition?

Kye decided to stick with her current idea, even though it was kind of slow, and kept coercing the mouse with her cheesecake-y finger.

"Well at least he's kind of doing it..." she commented, slightly amused.

Was she good at charms? "Uh... I guess so."She mused, not wanting to brag or anything. The badger noticed a first year joined them and introduced himself as Alessandro. Ah, she might see him around due to the same house. And then not long after that Cameron came and decided to take the last seat. Yes, Diandra knew his name because he's also a fourth year and she had seen him around. "Hi.... and nice to meet you all." She smiled and slightly nodded as Bel introduced her to the boys.

As the professor spoke up to start the lesson, Diandra paid attention to him and listened to the mini activity instruction. So they're going to guide the toy mouse passing through the maze... And what's the cheesecake for? Because you know... they were not using the real mouse so it wouldn't be eaten by the fake one, right? Also, the real animal would use the smell of cheesecake as a guide or something. But alas, she would just follow his instruction. "So... who wants to try first?" She offered to her desk mates.

So..... guide a toy mouse through a maze to eat a mini cheesecake? Bel looked around and spotted said cheesecakes. Why cheesecakes? Well, she supposed them not being real mice meant it didn't matter what they were coaxed with. Mini activity? If this was the mini, Bel was excited to see the maxi. Or er.... whatever it was going to be called.

She smiled at Diandra when she spoke up.

"I'll go get a mouse for us!, someone else get a cheesecake!"
She got up and headed to the front to get said mouse. Which one? Which color? Did it matter? She put her hand in and picked one out randomly, coming out with a bright yellowy-orange one. Well! Three of her tablemates (including herself) were Hufflepuffs, so that was fitting! And the fourth wouldn't care either way anyhow. She headed back to the desk with the mouse, holding it up as if it was, well, a snitch actually. Had someone got the cheesecake?

Humming in agreement to Hanna's statement, he couldn't help but adore the purple mouse, too. Would professor Marchand mind lending him one to practice the spell that animated all the toys? He made a mental note to ask the man after class, and instead focused back on their mouse, who looked a little lost. Hanna had prodded it slightly towards the right direction, and he also helped it by blocking its way towards the wrong direction and, eventually, the mouse found the cheesecake.

"Enjoy, little guy," he told the mouse as it munched happily on the cake, and he wished he could relate to that as he glanced at the extra pieces that Hanna had brought. "You think professor Marchand would mind if we had one more piece to ourselves?" he said, lowering his voice. Since they were going to try again to lead the mouse to the same direction, maybe he'd be able to smuggle two extra pieces for the two of them.

... he was hungry. And weak for cheesecake.

"Hey Rylee, mind if I join the both of you?" her eyes then shifted towards the older girl and beamed at her. "I don't think I've met you yet, I'm Shera, first year. Nice to meet you!"

Because if they were working together then they should at least know each others names.

Hattie tilted her head as she tried to get her little mouse to go off towards the cheesecake. It was harder than it looked, and she was surprised. She'd have thought the mouse smelling the cheesecake would have made it go towards it. But apparently not. She had to coax it along a little, tapping the edges of the maze so that the mouse would go around, and try and find the cheesecake. Though, maybe she she should have been glad it was taking a while. If it was doing it quickly, it would get lots of cake, and nobody wanted a fat mouse. They were good for nothing. Eventually, after a lot of coaxing the mouse did find the cheesecake. "Great!" She beamed, just as she heard a few voices.

The sixth year looked up and smiled. "Hi!" People wanted to join her and that as great. "I'm Harriet"" She explained, knowing it was easier when everyone knew each others names. "Feel free to join. do one of you wanna go next? My mouse just found the cheesecake. It was harder than I thought it would be!"

Moving the cheesecake through the maze seemed to be a good plan of action. Even the Professor agreed! Maxton leaned forward in his seat so he could get a better view as he watched Finn manoeuvre the dessert through the maze, creating a scent trail.

The fourth year looked up and sent the hint of a smile in Katy's direction when she apologised for being bossy. Someone had to be the boss when it came to group work, and it certainly wasn't going to be him so he didn't mind.

The mouse was walking around in circles near the start of the maze so Max picked him up and moved him a little further ahead. "I'm not sure if he's got the scent..." It wasn't a real mouse. Did it even have a sense of smell?

But then...! "There he goes!" The pink mouse started following the little path they had created for him. "Get ready to nudge him along!" Ooooh, this was fun!
