Default The Greenhouses

{The Greenhouses}

The Greenhouses house any and all plants the Department of Environmental Regulation and Protection is currently working on, both indigenous and foreign. This is where the Botanists work their magic - literally and figuratively. A place where Potions ingredients and rare plants are being grown and where the Research and Development team conduct their experiments. After the incidents under Nickles' reign, some of the more aggressive plants have been quarantined into a separate smaller greenhouse, to be tended to only by those specifically assigned to the task.

If you do not work for the Department of Environmental Regulation and Protection, you are NOT permitted to enter any of the Greenhouses without being accompanied by a DERP-employee; unless you have been given explicit permission by the Department Head, Olly Emmons-Clarke.

Should you find any of the greenhouses to be short on supplies of any kind, please contact one of the Greenhouse Caretakers.

Just HOW the owl had managed to get into one of the Greenhouses, nobody knows but the fact of the matter is:

It was in there now.

And had been in there over night.

Locked in.

In a state of panic.

Fortunately this greenhouse was not home to any carnivorous plants; or maybe that was unfortunate, seeing as that way the owl would have been easily dealt with sooner rather than later. As it were though, in the morning the owl was still trying to get out of the greenhouse and was still holding a memo it was supposed to have delivered yesterday.

During the night it had repeatedly relieved itself on top of the plants AND had tried to eat some of them. The latter of the two leading to even more of the former.

In conclusion, it was not a pretty sight.

Lucy was ready to start her daily routine of looking after the greenhouses when she came upon the horrible sight in one of the greenhouses. Quickly unlocking the greenhouse, she rushed in and her mouth gaped open at the full extent of the damage.

Her dark brown eyes fell upon a rather panicky owl that was carrying a memo. "Ssh, it's okay. Let me unburden you with that," Lucy said calmly referring to the memo. She hoped that the owl would let her have the memo and then it would make an exit.

Lucy looked around and prepared to start some much-needed repair work. She was in need of some help and fast.

Default 2102 Ministry of Magic Greenhouse Party & Orientation Event

As a special welcome back and orientation event, the Ministry of Magic department heads thought up something really magical this year. If you’ve been to Greenhouse One on Level 4 before, you might notice quite a few things looking different tonight as you walk in through the door. While the greenhouse is still lined with a wide selection of plants, the paths leading between them have been cleared. Instead of the usual carts with botany and research supplies, small tables have been set up for people to enjoy their food and drinks and perhaps even a lovely chat with a coworker.

And of course it’s hard to miss the star of the evening, the centerpiece if you will. In case you have a green thumb or are just really into botany in theory, you might have recognized the enormous flower in the middle of the room - one that looks JUST about ready to bloom. A Corpse Flower is being showcased in the middle of the room, surrounded by some minimalistic decorations and a very big, very obnoxious DO NOT TOUCH sign. A small plaque near the flower informs you of just how rarely one gets a chance to see it in bloom. Which is why DERP, along with the rest of the department heads, have invited everyone to bear witness to this very special occasion.

Seeing as DERP are not the most trustworthy bunch (with good reason, remember that expedition to Hogwarts a few years ago? Yeah, they still weren’t fully past that), they have made sure to put up protective spells around each and every plant inside the greenhouse and have furthermore securely locked the doors leading to the other greenhouses. There will be no sneaking off or touching of any of the plants, be that magical or mundane. If you try, you will regret it.

But other than that, have fun! There’s plenty of food and drinks and the ambience is amazing. And let’s not forget the big reveal that is supposed to happen around halfway through the orientation event: watching the large flower spread its petals and thus spread joy amongst everyone lucky enough to be there. So stay, have a drink, talk to some of your coworkers. It will be a while until you’ll be allowed in here again.

Genny had been to the ministry before with Sam multiple times but he never showed her the greenhouses. So this was sort of new. After handing over their coats at the entrance, Genny led Davie inside the greenhouses. "It's kind of weird why they didn't have this at the park instead of among plants they're growing," she commented lightly, smiling widely. "But I guess the weather is not their friend this time of year." She didn't care where the party was really. This was going to be a relaxing night where she got to know Davie's new workplace and potential suitors dates.

Her eyes caught the food tables first, then the drinks then the--"Wow. Oh I'm so happy I came." The flower! She was pulled towards it, just to look and not touch. But yeah, wow. Sam was missing a lot by being a sour spirit.

Eureka felt nostalgic the minute she stepped into the atrium. It had been five years since she worked here as a ranger. The decision she made to come back here was not easy, especially after the whole drama with her parents. She was at the point in her life where she had enough confidence to be more assertive in her decisions. Just a little bit. She was as fragile and nervous-looking as ever. Eureka smiled a little at the sight of the glass case in the centre of the hall. Having come solo, she immediately decided to go check the flower out before heading for the drinks' table.

Davie dutifully followed Genny, feeling nervous as heck but not wanting to really miss anything at his FIRST big event for his FIRST real job. Plus, the event was being held in the greenhouses, which were always a second home for him, even if he wasn't going to be working on this floor. He wasn't sure about this gathering or what to do with his hands at first, but then his blue eyes caught sight of the nearly in bloom titan arum in the center of the room.

"Gennnnnny," he breathed, already geeking out just at first glance of the plant. "They couldn't house one of those in the park. They're native to Sumatra; large, tropical plants, they only bloom once every ten or so years." He had to calm himself and made a movement to fidget with glasses before he realized they weren't there on his face.

Oh. That's right. He'd been strongly discouraged from wearing them this evening. He decided to fidget instead with his shirtsleeves, rolling them up as it was rather warm in here. He wasn't sure if he was pulling Genny closer to the titan arum or if she was the one doing the pulling, but he, too, wanted a closer look. "Did you know my mum had one of these once, at Hogwarts?" Here came the fun facts, Geneva Tate; brace yourself. "It was before I was born, but apparently it was a sight---and smell---to behold." And of course, Anastasia Truebridge still mentioned it from time to time; not just anyone could grow a corpse flower, after all.

☆ ☆ ☆

Fletcher was proud of himself for helping to plan this thing, ya know? He'd had an exhausting December, between the promotion and the hiring new people and the wedding and everything else, but his last two weeks, spent just with his bride, had been the absolute best two weeks. Maybe even the best of all of 2101. So he was all smiles now as he walked hand in hand with her into the greenhouse to ring in the new year.

The place looked great, smelled great, and was pleasantly warm; and yet, Fletcher only had eyes for his usual favorite person AND place. "Wanna check out the food table?" he asked as he gave Jessa's hand a squeeze.

What an interesting break it had been. Christian not being home for Christmas was not something that was well received after their loss of Tad a few years ago. It brought back the feelings of loss and the holiday was a struggle for this grandmother. She was grateful for her family that she could be around and Charles, but without Christian it did feel off.

Now though it was time to get back into the thought of work, she really wasn't sure how many years she had left to put in as the top of Games and Sport, but she was going to appreciate and join the time she had left as the department head. Plus this was a very rare event and she was excited to get to have the chance to be there and see the flower bloom.

As she entered the greenhouse her eyes scanned the room looking to see who had gotten there before her. Most likely not many since she was always one of the early one and now more than ever being with the minister.

"Congratulations on your promotion Fletcher." She headed towards the new department head and wondered how he would be as a department head. She knew he had done well from what she saw last year, even with Mini when he was asked to take the feline, she now called Mini after little minister for her own amusement, to Charles' office.

For those who know Albert Morgenstern, he was a man that wasn't at all keen on partying, socializing, and mingling. He either blames his age, or his perpetual annoyance in Ministry parties that were held ever since he was employed. It just wasn't his cup of tea. This year however, he thought it was going to be a promising one. Danger was of course the wizarding world's middle name, but at least the Ministry came up with something educational...for a change. On top of that, a good friend of his has decided to join the ranks of public service, and was even more delighted at the news that he got the job.

It could only mean that a quick visit to his clinic would suffice for his routine check-ups. Leading the way, Albert entered the Greenhouse and gestured for his friends to come along where they can have a good view of the whole venue with the famed Corpse Flower at the center. "Welcome to the Ministry, Healer Reed." he said in a hushed tone, keeping an eye out for his colleagues in DMC, and his own daughter. "I have to admit that I am quite pleased that you are here with us now. We sure need your expertise," he started as he pulled his sleeve down and fixed his shirt's cuffs out of habit. "...and I sure hope you are ready for...whatever is in store for all of us this year." Albert took a deep breath and exhaled slowly as he raised his nose up in the air looking down on everyone. "Let's not die this year too, shall we?"

River Reed was back in (more) action as he walked with Albert into the Ministry and through Level 4's Greenhouse. It sure did remind him of Hogwarts with Paul and his plants, and the thought brought an instant grin on his face. It didn't take long for him to see the star of the night in the middle of the venue. "Thank you, Mr. Morgenstern. And I am honored to be of service," he said looking around hoping to see more familiar faces. He caught sight of Fletcher, gave him a well-mannered nod his way as soon as his boss saw him. "I'll take it one day at a time, sir. Otherwise, I would have not survived medical school at all...or worse, wizarding schools." Now Hogwarts and Castelobruxo were two different things compared to St. Mungo's. There simply was no middleground. Either he was blessed with a peaceful day, or he was personally accompanying an unconscious child to St. Mungo's with a head injury. Safe to say, he was ready for whatever.

Hopefully.

River grinned and shook his head as he side-eyed his companion. "That is a very good plan, Mr. Morgenstern." Good plan indeed. "We do have families to go home to and take care of."

Amongst the cacophony of excited greetings and murmurs, River was able to pickup an unmistakable excitement of a classic Ravenclaw because it did remind him of himself when he was younger. The kid definitely knows his Herbology stuff, and Paul would be proud. River too was familiar with the Indonesian flower, and he was sure he'd have a good laugh with Sokolov and Hirsch if they were there with him too making naughtyjokes.

Conley was feeling a little nervous, but he certainly hoped he wasn’t showing it. This was, after all, the first official outing that he and Sachin were attending as a couple. Charles’ seeming indifference at their relationship aside, Conley wasn’t sure how his other colleagues were going to react. Most importantly, he hoped Sachin didn’t sense his nerves and get the wrong idea. He took a small solace that the two men had agreed to continue to remain fairly professional while on Ministry grounds.

”It’s warm in here,” Conley complained, as if he’d forgotten what it was like being inside of a greenhouse. Herbology had always been Conley’s least favorite subject and in fact, had often been a pain in the roses. It was no wonder he’d blocked out the traumatizing memories. It was a good thing he’d listened to his husband about ditching the layers he usually wore to work. He turned to his husband. ”Let’s go see this flower before it gets too crowded…and then I need a drink.”

Sachin, having been working between the Indian and British Ministries for many years now, was familiar with both. Still, he had never taken the opportunity to really get to know level four of the British Ministry. Sure, he had seen the many, many plants but not up close as he was able to in this moment. The unbloomed Corpse Flower though… that definitely was taking up his attention from a distance. That and his husband, of course.

Right hand stuck in his pants pocket, he directed his gaze to Conley. “Then it’s a good thing you listened to me about your usual layers.’’ He smiled a tad triumphantly but really… The Ambassador didn’t mind Conley in all the layers. His gaze lingered a while longer, registering the nerves that radiated off of Conley and briefly wondered if the other man was having second thoughts about their attending the event. He said nothing, however, and shifted his attention partially back to the Flower. “Han, chalo ek karib dekho milata hai.’’ Yes, let's get a closer look. “Then we can get you that drink.’’ There weren't that many people there yet but there were some faces that he recognised from his frequent trips to the Ministry.

This and every other subsequent Sachin posts are dedicated to his model/face claim who died on 14th June, 2020. Rest In Peace, Sushant </3

Oh! he could tell that Sachin was pleased about being right. Conley merely gave him a look that implied that he wasn’t amused, but truthfully he didn’t mind being wrong. Still, he could see that Sachin could sense his nerves. ”I make it a point to avoid greenhouses. Have I ever told you about my experience with a chomping cabbage in school?” No, he probably hadn’t. It was a story that made Conley look incompetent and almost lost him a few fingers. Stupid cabbages.

As they passed Victoria and Fletcher Conley gave a wave of acknowledgement as they both seemed to engaged. He wasn’t sure why he let the orientation get to him so much, but something about these events just needled him. ”Have you ever seen one of these before?” he asked as they moved closer to the flower. The question was open to both Sachin and the young lady (Eureka) who was standing there looking at the big flower. It had to be at least 10 feet tall, if not taller.

The situation at Hogwarts had put unnecessary strain on the department which had therefore pulled the department head's attention away from his appointed task. With the Minister practically breathing down his neck these days, and after having seen entirely too many pictures of the man's grandchildren, he had bit the metaphorical bullet and allocated necessary Unspeakable energies and funding to researching the the Rehticus Vortex and sending teams from the Space Chamber out to measure the lingering traces of von energy left at the site. Magic, after all, did always leave its traces. Something he was always acutely aware of.

His attendance here was entirely out of obligation, though it did provide ample opportunity to take care of another matter all together. He felt himself treading on thin ice with him and this was one task he had every confidence of delivering on. So after grabbing himself the necessary glass of bubbly something, the lanky blonde strode towards some of the flower beds to inspect them. While eyes were cast towards the flora of the hour, he was busy looking for a few specific items off his list - knotgrass for now. He would have to come back a bit later for the rest.

As soon as his hand reached out to touch the plant in question, however, there was a terrible jolt to his hand that elicited a loud and undignified YELP. His hand retracted and looked as though he had just set it against a piping hot stove top while the magical barrier around the flower bed vibrated a warm fluorescent turquoise before fading out.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Lucy had worked incredibly hard in helping her department organise this momentous event and she was going to have fun and mingle. With a drink in her hand, Lucy started to make her way over to the crowd that was gathering when she saw Airey Flamsteed yelp and jerk his hand away in pain. She immediately knew what had happened and walked up to him.

"Did you not notice the sign saying 'Do Not Touch'?" Lucy asked as her eyes flashed dangerously. Flamsteed may be a Department Head but in her mind, that made what he did even more stupid. He should know better.

Daisy had never been to the greenhouses before so this was rather thrilling. She was about to serve herself some food when she heard someone yelp. Turning at the source of the noise, Daisy saw Airey and Lucy, the latter looking a bit upset so she headed over to them.

"What happened?"
she asked with tenderness in her voice when she saw Airey's hand.

Arabella had to make a good impression. No, not good impression - phenomenal one. Why you may ask? Well because her father was here. She and Louise had spent hours in the shops over the past few days trying to find the right work outfits as well as the right outfit for this particular event. Not too loud, not too bland. She had to look sharp, sophisticated like a true Morgenstern woman. She settled on something striking but added a blazer to make it more.. y'know professional.

Chin tilted and shoulders straight, Arabella confidently strode into the greenhouse. Her eyes scanned the area, trying to figure out who she knew. Ah yes, there was her father and River, of course, conspiring together. She smiled to herself, watching the scene unfold. Ara made her way over to the two gentlemen and offered them a signature Morgenstern smirk. "Charming flower, isn't it?" she offered, inserting herself into whatever conversation they were having. "Mr. Reed, please tell me that you're advising my father to take a vacation soon, yes?" she asked, shooting a teasing smile towards her father. Now this would be interesting to see. Two Morgensterns together... Well three - with Dylan in count. Really Arabella considered it four. She did consider River apart of the family. After all, he had been her family's personal Healer since she was seven.

Arabella was about to ask them a question about the event when she heard a YELP. She tore her gaze from her father and dear Healer to find a man holding his hand. Ooh - that didn't sound good..... She saw two women approach the man. "Are you alright?" she asked the man [Mr. Flamsteed] who was holding his hand. She wondered what he had tried to do before her eyes wandered to a particular sign that asked them not to touch the flowers.

Jake had lost track of how many of these things he'd been to, or perhaps he just preferred not to think about it. He and Becca had almost had to miss this one though, what with one of the kids getting ill again; their youngest really did seem to like scaring Jake witless... though that wasn't really a fair thing to say. Poor little guy couldn't help it.

In the end, Jake had managed to persuade himself to go; at the rate Charlie fell ill, staying by his side every time was an impossibility. He was being looked after, all the rest of the kids still at home were. Hopefully his three already at Hogwarts were in safe hands too, but... Jake had no way of knowing. Naturally, he'd turned all of his fussing and protective energy onto his younger children, but there was absolutely no need to keep apparating home to check that all was okay there.

... Already thinking about when he might be able to slip away and do just that, Jake began traversing through the greenhouses, taking stock of faces he didn't already recognise. The year hadn't even started properly and he was already feeling the stress. Sure, that... was pretty normal for his department, and even more normal for him since switching jobs, but still. Things were... not going terribly well in general, and Jake had little reason to believe they would get much better any time soon. But these new faces, they made him anxious where usually they might not have done so. That wasn't fair either, so he tried to shake it off.

Turning back at the sound of a great yelp, Jake's eyes fell on the Mysteries Department Head. A glance at his hand and the glowing (now fading) barrier around the plants told Jake all he needed to know. "Messing with DERP's plants, Flamsteed?" He spoke good-naturedly, rather than in an accusatory way, relatively certain that anything that had happened was likely accidental.

Flamsteed was already starting to draw quite the crowd though, so Jake hung back, and looked out for anyone else he might know.

~~~
What in the world was he doing here?
Okay. Yes. He'd applied for a job and ended up getting one, all totally legitimate, and yet... Kaiser couldn't shake the feeling that he simply didn't belong here. And specifically that he didn't belong in the job he'd been placed in, working among very important people. One very important person, in particular. How had he managed that?
Not to mention, Kaiser was still reeling from the events of... not even two weeks ago. He was doing his best to not think about it or any of that other stuff right now - even though part of it was the whole reason he'd decided to go ahead with the job - and to focus instead on mingling and socialising as best he could.
Tugging the cuffs of his shirt sleeves down over his hands as far as they would go, Kaiser entered the greenhouses on level four - sans plus one, because... well - and immediately headed for the refreshments. He wasn't really sure he'd be able to stomach much, as none of it looked appetising to him, but it was better than just lingering at the edge of the room, which was what he absolutely wanted to do.
He was, however, intending to keep his distance from that flower. Kaiser had not long ago learnt about the corpse flower at Hogwarts, and was not keen to get up close and personal with one. Um... thanks for the opportunity, though.
Jonathan was kind of excited to be here. Ever since his daughter didn't come back from Hogwarts, his December was pretty much boring. At that moment he knew he needed new hobbies or at least participate in gatherings like these. Keeps his mind from being an overprotective father.
He stopped to look at the flower his brain instantly telling him to touch it but of course he saw the sign. It was a big one- enough for every adult in this room would see. He chuckled under his breath before turning to join the crowd.
His eyes spotted Fletcher the moment he stepped inside greenhouses- interesting they placed the welcoming party here. This was a better set up. Jonathan likes the ambience. "Welcome back, boss" he chuckled as he got near the newly promoted Department Head with 2 glasses of drink in his hand, obviously offering the other one to Fletcher.
UGH. How did she talk herself into this?
Kiko hates being in crowds but since this was a ministry gathering she knew it would be best (as an adult) for her to mingle and share Christmas stories to other adults. Taking a deep breath and composing herself before stepping inside the place her eyes wandered around the area.
Did she know anyone? Perhaps, not. Mingling wasn't something she's best at, she was a shy person and often really quiet. She opted standing near the wall like she usually does and tried her best to smile at the others when they meet eyes.
Kiko made her way towards the refreshments, drinks would calm her down and maybe stare at that large flower with its ridiculous sign that says not to touch it. "Looks, cool" she said under her breath, staring at the centerpiece flower.
He wasn't sure about this gathering or what to do with his hands at first, but then his blue eyes caught sight of the nearly in bloom titan arum in the center of the room.
"Gennnnnny," he breathed, already geeking out just at first glance of the plant. "They couldn't house one of those in the park. They're native to Sumatra; large, tropical plants, they only bloom once every ten or so years." He had to calm himself and made a movement to fidget with glasses before he realized they weren't there on his face.
Oh. That's right. He'd been strongly discouraged from wearing them this evening. He decided to fidget instead with his shirtsleeves, rolling them up as it was rather warm in here. He wasn't sure if he was pulling Genny closer to the titan arum or if she was the one doing the pulling, but he, too, wanted a closer look. "Did you know my mum had one of these once, at Hogwarts?" Here came the fun facts, Geneva Tate; brace yourself. "It was before I was born, but apparently it was a sight---and smell---to behold." And of course, Anastasia Truebridge still mentioned it from time to time; not just anyone could grow a corpse flower, after all.
Genny always forgets how Davie basically grew up with plants as siblings instead of real flesh and blood ones. She resisted the urge to roll her eyes when he ridiculed her VERY PLAUSIBLE critique of the venue choice. "Right. I knew that." Sumatra? What? "It is a large flower, I'll give it that." And a very cool idea for a ministry opening party. She was pleased.
Where were the drinks?
Oh, he wasn't finished with the plants' conversation. Genny, not wanting to be mean to Davie on his first day at a real job, smiled politely and nodded. His mother owning a flower like this made perfect sense, to be honest, but she was not about to comment on it today. "Fascinating. Do you want a drink?" Someone yelped from--the astronomy professor at school! Oh wow. Genny grinned at the blonde man, remembering him from school for sure. Either because he taught her or because his face was found around in photographs in journals and stuff rper can't remmeber. "Oh Merlin, look, it's professor Flamsteed. Bless him, we'll definitely have a good party if he's around," she giggled having leaned in towards David while she said that to avoid any eavesdroppers. He smelled good! "You smell nice today," she trolled with the same grin she gave Flamsteed earlier. That totally didn't count as being mean!!!!!
Maybe even the best of all of 2101. So he was all smiles now as he walked hand in hand with her into the greenhouse to ring in the new year.
The place looked great, smelled great, and was pleasantly warm; and yet, Fletcher only had eyes for his usual favorite person AND place. "Wanna check out the food table?" he asked as he gave Jessa's hand a squeeze.
Jessa tried her best not to be over the top with her white dress and black headdress. It was so hard when you're a former dramatic arts enthusiast and professional. It was very important that people here understood that they were now a married couple. She didn't know why it was important, but it was!
Anyway.
Jessa had a smile on while she held on to her husband's hand. "I don't think we can just yet," she said quickly when Victoria approached them. Oh yeah, Fletcher also got a huge job promotion. Jessa didn't forget, this wasn't the priority for her right now. She smiled at Victoria, anyway, having known the head of Sports briefly through Fletcher. Actually, she smiled and nodded at all the others who approached. She wasn't familiar with the last gentleman who called Fletcher boss (Jonathan) but her smile widened at that.
Her eyes moved to Fletcher's face taking in his handsome cute face and feeling the proudest she ever felt since Dunk took his first step six years ago.
It was a story that made Conley look incompetent and almost lost him a few fingers. Stupid cabbages.
As they passed Victoria and Fletcher Conley gave a wave of acknowledgement as they both seemed to engaged. He wasn’t sure why he let the orientation get to him so much, but something about these events just needled him. ”Have you ever seen one of these before?” he asked as they moved closer to the flower. The question was open to both Sachin and the young lady (Eureka) who was standing there looking at the big flower. It had to be at least 10 feet tall, if not taller.
Eureka wasn't paying attention to the growing crowd around her just yet. Her eyes were busy taking the majestic plant in front of her. This has got to be the best ministry opening she ever came to. She turned gently to her right when a couple seemed to come closer to the centrepiece as well.
"Me?" That was stupid, he was looking at her so he must be talking to her. "Yeah. Not here, though. I came across a herbologist in Norway who kept one in his greenhouse." She tucked a lock of hair behind her ear nervously. "I'm Eureka, by the way. I just came back to DERP this year again as a researcher." Should she stick her hand out to shake?? Very nervous.
Luther walked into the greenhouses not knowing what to expect from a ministry opening party. His first impression was an uptight people crammed in a space forced to network and exchange niceties. He wasn't wrong... for like five seconds before his new head of the department was seen get electrocuted or something?? That got a small lopsided smile out of the twenty-five-year-old.
Oh, look, there was David with a date, too. Luther briefly squinted at the couple thinking he knew that girl from somewhere. He definitely was not going to say hi when he joined a party solo while his cousin was there flaunting his charm with a brooding look.
He decided to go grab a drink for himself when he passed by a lady in a navy suit muttering something to herself. "Sorry?" Did she say something to him? Probably not since they didn't know each other? But if she did, it was rude to ignore it, so he better check.
Ah, Victoria! Fletcher grinned at her and nodded in faux humble appreciation. "Thank you... You know, I think babysitting your kneazle really made me look like the right choice for the job..." Besides the obvious fact that a junior undersecretary SHOULD be promoted to senior. Heh. His brown eyes were twinkling as he looked around at who to talk to next, besides Jessa of course. He caught the nod from the new Healer, River, and nodded back.
And speaking of junior undersecretaries... there was his new BFF Jonathan now. "Thank you!!!" Fletcher laughed easily and accepted the drink with his free hand, toasting to Jonathan before he took a sip. "Congrats to you too, of course. I think we have a great team on Level One." And with three dudes in charge and one lady secretary to rein them all in, what could go wrong?
He was still all smiles as they wandered in further, his good mood only faltering slightly when Jessa said no food yet. SIGH. Did everyone notice his beautiful new wife, by the way? Did they? Did they? Oh hey, "Conley, how are ya," he greeted the head of International Cooperation as he breezed past him. Seemed like the other man's mood wasn't cooperating at the moment, but at least he had a... friend? with him? Huh.
Then they passed the Mysteries head, who was already causing a stir with some plants. "SOME people just NEVER learn to look and NOT touch," Fletcher tsk tsk'd to the wifey with a wink at her lovely face. Obviously 'looking not touching' did not include him; he was perfect.
Davie definitely preferred plants to people and did, in fact, consider several of his mother's massive achievements in Herbology as something like siblings. But could Genny really complain about his being an only child? She was one too, basically! "Yeah," was all he said for now. Clearly huge; that could go without saying.
Wait, was she tuning him and his fun plant facts out already?! "Okay, I'll take a drink," he agreed, just because it might make him less nervous and more inclined to talk about something besides plants all evening. His eyes wandered around, and thank Merlin for contacts (or not) because he noticed more than one familiar person here. "For the love of Dumbledore's lemon drops," Davie swore lightly under his breath. "My cousin works here now?!" Or second cousin, or whatever relation he was? Great. Fantastic. That bushy-beared bro had BETTER not be in the same department as him.... which, speaking of Flamsteed....
"Admiral Airey!" Davie did smile a little at the sight of him, though he also didn't approach him just yet. "Seems like he's as popular as ever. He's my new boss, did you know?" He was proud of this; proud to be working with the former Astronomy professor. Oh! Oh! Genny was leaning into him now and Davie was turning the same color as the leaves of the titan arum. "Th-thank you," he mumbled, too embarrassed now to think about what she meant by today. Did he smell worse on other days?!?
For those who know Albert Morgenstern, he was a man that wasn't at all keen on partying, socializing, and mingling. He either blames his age, or his perpetual annoyance in Ministry parties that were held ever since he was employed. It just wasn't his cup of tea. This year however, he thought it was going to be a promising one. Danger was of course the wizarding world's middle name, but at least the Ministry came up with something educational...for a change. On top of that, a good friend of his has decided to join the ranks of public service, and was even more delighted at the news that he got the job.
It could only mean that a quick visit to his clinic would suffice for his routine check-ups. Leading the way, Albert entered the Greenhouse and gestured for his friends to come along where they can have a good view of the whole venue with the famed Corpse Flower at the center. "Welcome to the Ministry, Healer Reed." he said in a hushed tone, keeping an eye out for his colleagues in DMC, and his own daughter. "I have to admit that I am quite pleased that you are here with us now. We sure need your expertise," he started as he pulled his sleeve down and fixed his shirt's cuffs out of habit. "...and I sure hope you are ready for...whatever is in store for all of us this year." Albert took a deep breath and exhaled slowly as he raised his nose up in the air looking down on everyone. "Let's not die this year too, shall we?"
River Reed was back in (more) action as he walked with Albert into the Ministry and through Level 4's Greenhouse. It sure did remind him of Hogwarts with Paul and his plants, and the thought brought an instant grin on his face. It didn't take long for him to see the star of the night in the middle of the venue. "Thank you, Mr. Morgenstern. And I am honored to be of service," he said looking around hoping to see more familiar faces. He caught sight of Fletcher, gave him a well-mannered nod his way as soon as his boss saw him. "I'll take it one day at a time, sir. Otherwise, I would have not survived medical school at all...or worse, wizarding schools." Now Hogwarts and Castelobruxo were two different things compared to St. Mungo's. There simply was no middleground. Either he was blessed with a peaceful day, or he was personally accompanying an unconscious child to St. Mungo's with a head injury. Safe to say, he was ready for whatever.
Hopefully.
River grinned and shook his head as he side-eyed his companion. "That is a very good plan, Mr. Morgenstern." Good plan indeed. "We do have families to go home to and take care of."
Amongst the cacophony of excited greetings and murmurs, River was able to pickup an unmistakable excitement of a classic Ravenclaw because it did remind him of himself when he was younger. The kid definitely knows his Herbology stuff, and Paul would be proud. River too was familiar with the Indonesian flower, and he was sure he'd have a good laugh with Sokolov and Hirsch if they were there with him too making naughtyjokes.
Camilla Reed was here. Obviously she was her husbands plus one and wouldn't have him attending a ministry party without her by his side. She couldn't be more proud of him and his decision to work in the ministry.
Despite entering the ministry greenhouse on level four several minutes after River and Albert, Cami had indeed arrived with the men. However she had politely slipped away to the powder room upon arrival. There was no way she would be entering such a gathering without ensuring she didn't look a mess. And she may have made a very quick check-in with their sitter. Sorry not sorry.
Brown eyes very quickly located River and she headed straight for him. A warm smile on her face and polite greetings of 'hello' and 'how are you?' given to those she had passed. "Gentleman," she greeted with a soft laugh, taking her place at River's left side. It didn't appear that she had missed anything important so that was a good thing.
A Poop * k8 *
Jessica had arrived with her brother, Bryant, at the employee orientation. Had she anyone that she'd be bringing as a date? No. So Bryant it was. At least her brother would keep her entertained, and if she felt too awkward socializing (a rarity, really, since she was formerly PAID to socialize, really) she would at least have his cheerfulness to keep her company. She didn't think she would need to rely on him in that way, but he was there anyway. And perhaps he could need a nice girl who was ACTUALLY cool, unlike that EX of his.
But enough holding grudges. The newly minted IMC employee was dressed professionally chic, as usual, and was watching everything with wide, interested eyes. Her brother may not appreciate what an exquisite and rare event it was to see the Corpse Flower unfurl itself, but Jessica thought it was so lovely and appropriate. Plus, the vibes of the greenhouse were nice. Mellow and colorful, wasn't it? While she didn't have an affinity for plants, she would certainly be respectful.
It was only once she was a little ways in, nodding at strangers here and there (and where had Bryant gone?!) when she noticed a VERY familiar face, one that made her lips curl into the delicious of smirks.
David Truebridge.
Her Beauty and the Brains partner was here, at the ministry? Was he new, too? He looked as awkward as she would think he would, but he was with a girl....she wondered if it were his date. Well, fat chance it was an actual date. The poor bloke had nearly choked when she asked him for drinks once they had finished their gameshow debut, but she demurely glided over towards the man.
"David....how lovely to see you. Are you..did you just start here as well?" she asked with a wicked glint to her eye. She also held out her hand for the woman with him [Genny]. "Hi. Jessica Tomás. Foreign Relations Officer. Lovely to meet you as well. David and I go waaaaay back. A whole...four months," she teased, hoping to get a rise from him.
Was bothering David Truebridge going to be a new work-time hobby? SHh. No one tell her nearby boss, who Jessica made a mental note to speak with in a second. She wanted to formally say hello and all!
She heard a yelp and glanced round, wondering if someone had been hurt - or CAUSED DAMAGE - to a plant. Weren't they all trained adults here?
If you'd asked Kodee Chosen after his internship whether he saw any real future in the Ministry, the boy may have told you
a few choice words to make a sailor blush then gone off to snog his girlfriend.
If you'd also told him things after Hogwarts would be wild in ways he could barely handle and force him to the ministry in an attempt to do better--well....he'd still have said a few unmentionables. The point was, how did he get here? The immediate here, he understood and arriving with Kenzie had done some good at calming his nerves but for the most part he felt like a Slytherin at an underground Gryffindor rumble--WHICH was strange, y'know? Usually he was leading those rumbles, one of the guys, floating around like the life of the party.
Here....here he was reminded of threats to remain on Level 6 and looks that said people thought he was a dumb kid. Where was the minister? How did he avoid him? Where was his boss? How did he ask to avoid the minister on the first night?
Speaking off the boss man, Kodee nodded toward the man--respectful as you like--before a certain someone else caught his attention.
"KAISER!!!"
Neither volume nor level of surprise were as intentional as they appeared. Kodee hadn't seen his friend...friend? Friend. He hadn't seen his friend since he'd disappeared from Hogwarts. Running into him here, at this orientation of all places. The former Gryffindor quickly crossed the room, with only minor shoving at people in his way before pulling the boy into a hug. A proper hug. He WAS mad at him but also...also....also....he'd really missed his friend.
Grae couldn't believe that she had been working for the ministry for almost three whole years now without ever stepping foot in the Greenhouses. And they were only two floors above her department! After entering the room, she spent the first few minutes admiring the ambience and scenery. There were quite a few plants that she'd never seen before. She grabbed a glass of champagne - because what was a Ministry party without some bubbly - and headed over to the centerpiece, where quite the crowd seemed to be gathering. Grae decided to jump in on the first conversation she overheard: an unfamiliar woman (Eureka) talking to Conley and someone that looked to be his guest.
She tucked a lock of hair behind her ear nervously. "I'm Eureka, by the way. I just came back to DERP this year again as a researcher." Should she stick her hand out to shake?? Very nervous.
Ah, a herbologist! "Welcome back," Grae chimed in, giving the woman a friendly smile. She wondered how long it had been since she worked here. The girl didn't look familiar, but maybe they had run into each other during Grae's first year at some point? "So you probably know all about this plant then." She gestured grandly to the odd-looking centerpiece in front of them. "Anything special about it?" There was most definitely something special about it, or else they wouldn't be having the annual party in the greenhouses. She was sure that the DERP had something exciting up their sleeves. Grae wondered what it was.
Another year, another Ministry party that he felt obligated to attend. Ryder made his way into the greenhouse, straightening his tie and thoroughly dreading the impending socialization. He didn't notice too many familiar faces yet, which was even more disappointing. It was one thing to chat with people he already knew - but making small talk with strangers was downright miserable. He was about to take up a spot at the corner of the room when he noticed a fellow DMLE employee observing the centerpiece.
Kiko hates being in crowds but since this was a ministry gathering she knew it would be best (as an adult) for her to mingle and share Christmas stories to other adults. Taking a deep breath and composing herself before stepping inside the place her eyes wandered around the area.
Did she know anyone? Perhaps, not. Mingling wasn't something she's best at, she was a shy person and often really quiet. She opted standing near the wall like she usually does and tried her best to smile at the others when they meet eyes.
Kiko made her way towards the refreshments, drinks would calm her down and maybe stare at that large flower with its ridiculous sign that says not to touch it. "Looks, cool" she said under her breath, staring at the centerpiece flower.
Well, talking to Kiko wouldn't be totally atrocious. At least they had met before and had a department in common. Not that he spent much time talking to his coworkers - he was usually stuck at his desk or busy in the courtroom. Sighing, he strode over to Kiko, accepting the fact that he needed to be somewhat social this evening. "Koline," he said with a nod as he approached her. Ryder glanced up at the plant in amusement, letting out a chuckle as he recognized the corpse flower. "Nothing to liven up a party quite like a plant that smells like a dead body when it blooms." Hopefully the DERP had a plan in mind to cover up the odor. That plant looked like it could bloom at any moment.
She and Louise had spent hours in the shops over the past few days trying to find the right work outfits as well as the right outfit for this particular event. Not too loud, not too bland. She had to look sharp, sophisticated like a true Morgenstern woman. She settled on something striking but added a blazer to make it more.. y'know professional.
Chin tilted and shoulders straight, Arabella confidently strode into the greenhouse. Her eyes scanned the area, trying to figure out who she knew. Ah yes, there was her father and River, of course, conspiring together. She smiled to herself, watching the scene unfold. Ara made her way over to the two gentlemen and offered them a signature Morgenstern smirk. "Charming flower, isn't it?" she offered, inserting herself into whatever conversation they were having. "Mr. Reed, please tell me that you're advising my father to take a vacation soon, yes?" she asked, shooting a teasing smile towards her father. Now this would be interesting to see. Two Morgensterns together... Well three - with Dylan in count. Really Arabella considered it four. She did consider River apart of the family. After all, he had been her family's personal Healer since she was seven.
Arabella was about to ask them a question about the event when she heard a YELP. She tore her gaze from her father and dear Healer to find a man holding his hand. Ooh - that didn't sound good..... She saw two women approach the man. "Are you alright?" she asked the man [Mr. Flamsteed] who was holding his hand. She wondered what he had tried to do before her eyes wandered to a particular sign that asked them not to touch the flowers.
From the last orientation until this one had been a truly whirlwind of travels. Well, technically only ONE travel as she was dispatched to a foreign country up until just a week ago when she arrived back in London again and MAN it felt good to be home. She wasn't even that jet-legged anymore, thanks to coffee and late nights and early mornings with the best friend updating her on what information she could reveal. But also shopping because Arabella had informed her she'd be joining her at the ministry!!
Louise wasted no time in coming up behind the young woman, linking her arm with hers. "Bella," she greeted, as she caught sight of the man Arabella was asking if he was alright with. Which it seemed he'd touched what was clearly marked DO NOT TOUCH. She leaned over and whispered at her, "Pretty sure you can do better than him in finding a man who can actually read." Nevermind that the man was married and much older, but Louise knew none of that. Heck, they both did have their affinities for older men anyway. "Have I told you how grateful I am to have you here as a wingwoman?" She giggled. Because of course they discussed that.
Besides the obvious fact that a junior undersecretary SHOULD be promoted to senior. Heh. His brown eyes were twinkling as he looked around at who to talk to next, besides Jessa of course. He caught the nod from the new Healer, River, and nodded back.
And speaking of junior undersecretaries... there was his new BFF Jonathan now. "Thank you!!!" Fletcher laughed easily and accepted the drink with his free hand, toasting to Jonathan before he took a sip. "Congrats to you too, of course. I think we have a great team on Level One." And with three dudes in charge and one lady secretary to rein them all in, what could go wrong?
He was still all smiles as they wandered in further, his good mood only faltering slightly when Jessa said no food yet. SIGH. Did everyone notice his beautiful new wife, by the way? Did they? Did they? Oh hey, "Conley, how are ya," he greeted the head of International Cooperation as he breezed past him. Seemed like the other man's mood wasn't cooperating at the moment, but at least he had a... friend? with him? Huh.
Then they passed the Mysteries head, who was already causing a stir with some plants. "SOME people just NEVER learn to look and NOT touch," Fletcher tsk tsk'd to the wifey with a wink at her lovely face. Obviously 'looking not touching' did not include him; he was perfect.
Davie definitely preferred plants to people and did, in fact, consider several of his mother's massive achievements in Herbology as something like siblings. But could Genny really complain about his being an only child? She was one too, basically! "Yeah," was all he said for now. Clearly huge; that could go without saying.
Wait, was she tuning him and his fun plant facts out already?! "Okay, I'll take a drink," he agreed, just because it might make him less nervous and more inclined to talk about something besides plants all evening. His eyes wandered around, and thank Merlin for contacts (or not) because he noticed more than one familiar person here. "For the love of Dumbledore's lemon drops," Davie swore lightly under his breath. "My cousin works here now?!" Or second cousin, or whatever relation he was? Great. Fantastic. That bushy-beared bro had BETTER not be in the same department as him.... which, speaking of Flamsteed....
"Admiral Airey!" Davie did smile a little at the sight of him, though he also didn't approach him just yet. "Seems like he's as popular as ever. He's my new boss, did you know?" He was proud of this; proud to be working with the former Astronomy professor. Oh! Oh! Genny was leaning into him now and Davie was turning the same color as the leaves of the titan arum. "Th-thank you," he mumbled, too embarrassed now to think about what she meant by today. Did he smell worse on other days?!?
At least her brother would keep her entertained, and if she felt too awkward socializing (a rarity, really, since she was formerly PAID to socialize, really) she would at least have his cheerfulness to keep her company. She didn't think she would need to rely on him in that way, but he was there anyway. And perhaps he could need a nice girl who was ACTUALLY cool, unlike that EX of his.
But enough holding grudges. The newly minted IMC employee was dressed professionally chic, as usual, and was watching everything with wide, interested eyes. Her brother may not appreciate what an exquisite and rare event it was to see the Corpse Flower unfurl itself, but Jessica thought it was so lovely and appropriate. Plus, the vibes of the greenhouse were nice. Mellow and colorful, wasn't it? While she didn't have an affinity for plants, she would certainly be respectful.
It was only once she was a little ways in, nodding at strangers here and there (and where had Bryant gone?!) when she noticed a VERY familiar face, one that made her lips curl into the delicious of smirks.
David Truebridge.
Her Beauty and the Brains partner was here, at the ministry? Was he new, too? He looked as awkward as she would think he would, but he was with a girl....she wondered if it were his date. Well, fat chance it was an actual date. The poor bloke had nearly choked when she asked him for drinks once they had finished their gameshow debut, but she demurely glided over towards the man.
"David....how lovely to see you. Are you..did you just start here as well?" she asked with a wicked glint to her eye. She also held out her hand for the woman with him [Genny]. "Hi. Jessica Tomás. Foreign Relations Officer. Lovely to meet you as well. David and I go waaaaay back. A whole...four months," she teased, hoping to get a rise from him.
Was bothering David Truebridge going to be a new work-time hobby? SHh. No one tell her nearby boss, who Jessica made a mental note to speak with in a second. She wanted to formally say hello and all!
She heard a yelp and glanced round, wondering if someone had been hurt - or CAUSED DAMAGE - to a plant. Weren't they all trained adults here?
Chloe arrived solo, as per usual although she was half tempted to bring a nine year old as a date, but decided against it. The redhead hadn't been sure what to even wear to a greenhouse party, as creatures and herbology had never been her forté, so she settled on a floral printed dress and boots.
Not seeing anyone from her department in immediate vicinity, Chloe instead headed toward a cluster of familiar faces in time to overhear the woman telling the other woman about her and David. "Jessica! David! I didn't know you two were coming to work at the Ministry!" Ah this was going to be a great new year, Chloe could just feel it. "And Jessica and I go back a whole day further than that," she grinned, before realizing she ought to introduce herself to the woman (Genny) she didn't know yet. "Chloe Adara. Master Portkey General."
In the very recent past, Evangeline had come to appreciate Alexa Cambridge even more than she had before. She always had appreciated and looked up to her, but now that she had stepped into her shoes and was trying desperately to fill them, she felt a bit lost and very overwhelmed.
Not to mention, she had always rather disliked these social gatherings. Usually she'd hang around the back or the doors with Angelo, but now she felt obligated to socialize and make small talk and she just... wasn't a fan of that. At least she still had Angelo by her side.
Out of habit, and constant suspicion, the former Auror's eyes scanned the perimeters of the room and then its participants, uncharacteristically nervous as she toyed with the pendant she wore around her neck.
She was proud of her promotion. Just... very nervous.
A commotion caught Conley’s attention and he turned, looking past Sachin’s shoulder. There was a turquoise ripple around Airey. How odd. Even odder was the fact that Airey didn’t seem his usual chipper neurotic self. Perhaps it was family trouble, the man always seemed a little harried by his children. Whatever the problem was, there should be plenty of DERP people around to deal with it. Just then Fletcher’s hello caught his attention. Conley noted the lovely lady with Fletcher and made a mental note to ask for an introduction and congratulations regarding the man's promotion later. ”Evening Fletcher,” he gave the man a wave and a smile. In doing so, he saw one of his employees, Jessica, walk in. Conley gave her a wave as well.
Eureka’s voice pulled his attention back. ”Was it blooming?” he asked about the one she had seen before. ”I heard they can be quite potent.” He noticed the nervous tick as she tucked hair behind her, but continued talking anyways. His own nerves were starting to settle, although he was still uncomfortable being around so many plants. Thankfully, making small talk was rather soothing, not to mention his bread and butter. ”Well, welcome back Ms. Eureka. Do you have a specialty that you research?" He offered a hand for her to shake. ”Conley, International Magical Cooperation.” He motioned to Sachin. "May I introduce Ambassador Singh.” While they chatted, another young lady (Grae) had joined them. He waited to see what Eureka had to say.
The only reason he was here, was because he had been bugged by Alba. And by bugged he meant, she might have mentioned it once and then asked him about it outright a week later. And yes, to Valentin that was akin to bugging. Still, as his only real friend in London, he agreed to meet her here. After all, one of the few things that the British Ministry was good at was throwing a party.
And what was the cardinal rule of parties? Never let your glass get too empty. In order to do that, one needed a drink. He made a beeline for the refreshment table, passing both Louise, Arabella, and another gentleman (Airey)who looked familiar, but at the moment, Valentin couldn’t place. As it was, his attention was set on getting his hands around something bubbly.
Tomasz was not typically one to place himself in circumstances with a large crowd. Due to the largely unresolved recent events, however, he did not have much of a choice. Security was not so much of a negotiable position. It brought him some comfort to know that his brother, Quentin, would be here soon.
Still, Tomasz made his way into the greenhouse with hesitance. He did not want to find himself in the middle of the crowd though the flower in the center of the room did draw his attention. Instead he stood with his back against the wall, scanning the room. When he noticed his new boss (Evangeline), he politely waved in her direction. Hopefully she could notice that he was already taking his role seriously.
It was not until he heard someone (Kodee Chosen) shout Kaiser's name that he jerked his head around to look in that direction. He immediately felt an overwhelming emotion overtake his body. Was it surprise? Disbelief? Tomasz was not certain. He stared from his corner of the room, his head tilting and brows furrowing in confusion as he tried to process.
Yasmin was thrilled to be back. Her break was busy and filled with appointments. She had promised herself she would take the time to recharge, but had found herself committing to one too many things. She preferred it this way, to be busy. She enjoyed being of use. She was grateful, however, to be back to work with the Ministry being at the top of her list of priorities for now. She had lesson plans to create and she had missed her colleagues terribly.
With a bright smile, she made her way into the greenhouse. She waved at Chloe joon (dear), who was busy in conversation. Yassi did not want to be a bother and opted against interrupting their current moment. She would surely have the time to chat with her friend later. And time to chat was very much needed as Yassi wanted to hear all about everyone's holidays.
As she continued to float around in the large greenhouse, she smiled at all who so much as glanced in her direction. If time would have allowed, she would have liked to stop by and chat with everyone.
She found herself admiring the vibrant color of Lucy's dress when she heard someone shouting. Yassi immediately looked around with concern in her eyes, but when she saw the two young men (Kaiser and Kodee) hugging, she was no longer concerned. Instead, she smiled to herself. They must be good friends. She laughed softly to herself as she continued her way towards the center of the room to admire the centerpiece.
Settling near two others whom she did not know (Luther and Kiko), she smiled warmly. She nodded, having caught Kikos' exclamation of awe just as she had stopped. "I am sure it will be even more beautiful once it blooms." It looked just about ready to do so as well.
