Accidents & Catastrophes: Office of Maddox Quigley, Department Head
Charles Hollingberry EraAll historical records pertaining to Ministry of Magic RPG under Minister for Magic, Charles Hollingberry [IC March 2097 - present; OOC November 2018 - present]
Once you've been invited inside the Department Head's Office, feel feel to take a seat either at the chair opposite his desk or any of the two long couches fixed about the room. Either's fine as he isn't usually bothered by most things.
Whatever the case, he's likely to make himself comfortable so you might as well do the same.
To the far corner of the room, you'll notice a large, fluffy cushion on the floor by a little cabinet that is always closed. You'll do best to leave that where it is. The scratching post, as it so happens, is also none of your concern.
The bookshelves all around the room are filled with various subjects ranging from Charms to Dragon taming, from curse breaking to cooking. It's not certain he's read them all but Maddox likes surrounding himself with as wide an array as possible, in the event he this job somehow provides him a chance to have a sit down but doesn't fancy a nap to while away his afternoon.
On his desk, you'll notice a picture of a woman with a wide smile and another more crowded subject consisting of five young children ranging from 6-10 years old with two sets of twins in the mix. It's best you not touch those; he's not very keen on others leaving their scent on them.
Due to his sensitive sense of smell the Professor has also charmed the office, leaving it rather neutral if not with the faintest hint of lavender.

OOC: Please read the thread description before posting here! This isn't strictly a public thread, but anyone is welcome to have their character knock on the door, assuming they come through the reception first. The office can be used, with permission from the Department Head, for division meetings if the conference room is in use, or if a smaller, more intimate setting is required.

But it was fine, because they would probably be beating away a line of guys who wanted to get with this single mother of two and Maddox would only get heartbroken. That was obviously the reason for him turning them down. "Your loss!" She grinned, adjusting herself in the seat.
"Apples? Sure! Red? Green? Pink lady? Granny Smith?" She hoped he knew that he was probably going to get more than apples. Coffee and licorice wands and a framed picture of she and Ursula shopping for him. Match made in heaven -- she and Ursy, that was. Maddox was just her work husband, obvy. She was DATING. Or trying to. Men really did run away as soon as they found out she had two children, and that was something she was trying to come to terms with. Being undesirable.
Man, life in her thirties was a pain.
ANY-HOOOOOOO.
Hands clasped together, Eli gave her best sigh. "I think I'm going to move on at the end of this year. Since 2084 I have had the exact same position in this department. Clearly, there is a limit on my progression, whether you and Aron did it purposely to keep me around to brighten your days or not. Briar-Rose is going to school come September and I need to be doing more." See. She had said it was serious.
"All of them." That was allowed, right? She wouldn't just go listing them all unless she was capable of getting her hands on all and if she could...then why not get them all for him? It was all making a world of sense to him, unfortunately. "But I suppose if you run out of time you could just stick to the green ones." Ahem. Yes. He was trying that whole gracious thing but really he'd be through the roof if she actually DID get him all that.
The man slipped into his seat, feet up on his desk as he waited for her to get into the serious matter that she'd come to discuss. While he waited, he thought of several silly little scenarios she could have mentioned, most of which would have made his day but he had to say, he wasn't prepared for that....
"Oh..." Maddox straightened in his seat, noticeably taken aback by her announcement. Suffice to say the man was already trying to imagine an office without Eliora in it and it was...oddly quiet and not quite the same, if that made sense. "I see." He'd only been in charge of the Department for a year and some, it never occurred to him just how long she may have been settled in her role. Huh.
"I don't suppose this is up for negotiation? You're a brilliant employee, Eliora, I'd hate to see you go without any fair attempts at keeping you."

"I'll get you your apples, Maddy. Don't you worry about it!" It just meant that she'd take a little bit longer for lunch, but it was okay because she was technically going to be doing a job for her boss and therefore it was normal. She would be paid to shop for apples and give boss man his fruitful energy. Honestly, she would want to marry herself if she could. Why hadn't Maddox binned off his wife and got Dodderidged yet? What. A. SHAME. Eliora even made a note of the kinds of apples she had mentioned so that she would be able to give him everything she had promiseD. BESIDES HER HAND IN MARRIAGE BECAUSE HE DIDN'T EVEN WANT THAT.
But as the chat got serious, she realised that being married to her boss would have definitely been less helpful than she would have wanted. And even less fun. Marriage took away the element of flirting, so said her sister. Eli had no encounters with that sort of serious relationshipping and doubted she would again. Nathan Prince had been enough of a lesson.
She noticed his confusion with what was being said, and made sure that she looked as serious as she had when she started as she carried on. "I'm just making you aware now, instead of me handing in my resignation later this year and leaving you in the lurch." She hadn't thought about there being attempts at keeping her or negotiation. There had been years for that already. "It would be rude of me to not tell you my thoughts on it." And to just leave. Like Aron had. Like Rusty had. Like Briar-Rose's father had. Like everyone had.

Ah yes, he'd be getting his apples. Good good. Did he care it might keep her out of the office a little longer than necessary...and even worse...on business that was less than official? NOPE. Apples were life, almost in the same way naps were. This was happening and the man was perfectly willing to have her clocked for those hours and paid accordingly. Come to think of it, why hadn't a job position of that sort opened up? The man would gladly pay out of pocket if the new Minister for Magic didn't think it a prudent investment.
But right, this wasn't about apples. This was about him losing one of his more competent and capable employees by the end of the year and whatever he may or may not have been able to do about it. "I certainly do appreciate you drawing it to my attention this early on." He continued on, albeit a little more cautiously than a moment ago.
"I'd like to hear your thoughts on that, yes. It's always a tragedy losing an employee like you. I'm all ears." Literally, as a result of the sensitive hearing, and figuratively.

The seriousness of the conversation had almost knocked the caffeine high out of her system and Eliora was regretting it already. Perhaps she should have waited until later on in the year to do this. Not..leaving it until last minute, but not so many months ahead of the game. As she settled back against her seat, the blonde shrugged a hand through her hair and considered her relationship with her boss. Her friendship, because there wasn't anything more than that with Maddox. She jested and people assumed. But it had been the same way with Aron, and that was how she was an an employee. In fact, Eliora put her full efforts into her every day work and she knew that Maddox appreciated that. Hence why she was telling him face to face and why she was giving room for a chat and not just deciding to leave.
"You have children, Maddox. You understand the need to better yourself for their sake. Am I showing them to reach for the stars if I keep the exact same position for almost a decade? Or am I showing them that when you feel comfortable with something, to stick at it and not expand your capability?" She maybe regretted her wording there, because being comfortable could be taken as she was getting complacent with her job, which was nothing like the reality.
"There are an unlimited number of spells to research, I understand that. My job is always new, and being Department Liaison is wonderful and it was an absolute honour to receive that position also.. But... I don't know what more there is for me to give to advance."

So she had a point there, no denying that. He himself had gone through several jobs and positions in his lifetime and liked to think his children saw that the world was yours and you could do whatever you decided--with some work of course. Maddox nodded along as she explained, no matter how much he didn't want to admit she was right.
There was only so much further to climb in this particular division within the Ministry. "And there's nothing else you'd like to try your hand at before you abandon me?" His lips parted in a playful grin, an indication he wouldn't be taking this resignation personally. Sometimes you just wanted to move on. It happened. People, by nature were restless.
"Where do you see yourself going from here? I may have a contact here or there you could send an owl to." If she wanted. "I'm not gonna lie. My meetings will be on the more quiet side now." The smile turned somewhat rueful. Eliora was a keeper, which was probably why it was best she left. SO much potential, too much to be stifled.

Mirroring his grin, Eliora shrugged. "We could always run away, get married, have five more children and live happily ever after. I'm not getting any younger, you know. I can't wait another decade for someone in this place to realise I'm the love of their life." Here's looking at every male she had ever rated that had gone on to get serious with other flings and boring bores that weren't her. Had she mentioned that they were all obviously boring because they weren't her? And then it struck her.. "You could always let me run the department for a week. Under your supervision, of course." And with Ursy on half-hourly coffee runs as opposed to being the best man lady at their wedding.
She expected her ideas to be shot down or brushed off as jokes, as they all were. But part of her was intrigued to see how much her boss trusted her. She was after all going to buy him apples after this.
With his next question, she frowned. The downturn wasn't something that frequented her features, especially not in the company of Maddy, but it was clearly a problem. "I don't know. That's why...I decided to give myself the year to find something, I suppose. This is all I know, really. I was a personal assistant before, you know." Which of course he knew. He had her file.

Yes, she'd heard of Maddox Quigley. Although she didn't formally know him. But it wasn't like she'd fallen out of touch with the Hogwarts Professors when she left in 2085, which meant she was fully aware that her new department head had replaced Pierson Fuller as Charms professor in the year after she left. She was also aware - thanks to certain former students - of his apple fetish, something she would NOT be condoning his obsession by providing him one. For starters, she knew she was way older than her, and even though he was her boss, she had vast more experience than him. But she was curious as to who he was, because despite not wanting to contribute to his apple obsession, she DID want to meet him officially. Introduce herself. Clear any preconceived notions she had about him.
Easily navigating her way to his office, the brunette raised her hand to knock.

Sweet Circe where was it?
Maddox hopped from his desk, landing with a soft thud on padded paws and made his way under it. The file jacket had been dropped on there before he'd stepped out to lunch but by some odd happenstance, it wasn't there now? Ugh, he didn't have time for this. It shouldn't have been right for a man--cat for the moment--to go on a hunt when his stomach was still trying to figure out what to do with all he'd fit in there.
Realizing it wasn't down there, the man hopped up onto the bookshelves, nimbly moving from section to section, trying to sort through things as best he could with clawed paws.
It was the knock on the door that had yellow eyes moving to the wooden structure. A visitor? An employee? Someone coming to replace the file and explain they'd simply borrowed it? Was it bad he hoped it was the last? He didn't fancy having to ask Lynley for another copy. The woman would probably give him an earful.
Maddox leapt from the shelf he currently occupied, taking a moment to stretch back into the shape of the often scraggly looking man that he was before opening the door. Oh. Hadley. "What can I do for you, Josephina?"

ELIORA WAS ENRAGED.
FULL OF ANGER.
BUBBLING.
THIS. WAS. AN. EMERGENCY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Eliora was READY to talk with her fists and it was the VERY reason she removed herself from her desk and was now HAMMERING (HAM HAM HAMMERING) on the office door. And she was not going to wait at this door for LONGER than TEN SECONDS. So Maddox has LESS than that to open it and greet her and pet her HAIR until she calmed down.

OI vey.
He didn't remember ordering a headache. WHY was there banging at his door?? Who DIDN'T know by now just how much he hated loud noises? Maddox scowled in the direction of the door and the loud, irritating banging. Ignoring it would only make his ears and head throb. As much as he wasn't in the mood for visitors, he wasn't in the mood for this either.
U G H.
Reluctantly, Maddox flicked his wand toward the door, not caring to ask who it was. Oh no, he'd get to that in a moment. Right now his only concern was making the painful knocking end. His sensitive hearing couldn't take it.
The scowled deepened involuntarily once the door swung open. "Eliora." He said, hoping her name would be enough to have her cease. Seeing her, he had a feeling this wasn't likely to get any quieter any time soon.
Oi.
Vey.

When the door swung open, Eliora FELL through it with a wail and landed on the floor where she lay flat on her back and burst into tears.
"ThIS iZZZ the WORST THING IN THE WORRRRRRRRRLD MADDY"
Another wail.
"THE WERRRRRRRST."
The sobbing noises took over anything she was trying to say now and the tears rolled down the sides of her face and into the hair that she had been so proud of this morning.
Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite
Maddox cringed when the wailing began, now wishing he'd left the door closed to cushion some of that. For the briefest moment, the man considered a silencing charm--just until she calmed down enough--but something told him that would only make her louder in other ways and he wasn't prepared to open that can of worms.
The next option was his hands over his ears.
"Eilora, Love, what's the worst?" He tried calmly, doubting that in fact anything was as grave as this lying on the ground in a 2 year old's fit warranted. His main concern was getting her to stop crying. Once he got that under control, maybe they could discuss appropriate ways to get his attention. Ones that were less......loud.
"No tears, let's not have tears." His hands remained firmly clamped over his ears. "Tell Maddox what happened and he'll try to fix it for you." Try being the operative word. You never really knew with this woman and he wasn't ready to commit to a solution that could potentially require a whole lot more effort than he was willing to extend.

WHY WAS HE NOT PETTING HER HAIR?!
Eliora wasn't even creating tears anymore... just noise. And she wasn't showing signs of shutting up any time soon. She wailed and wailed and wailed for a few more seconds before rolling onto her side and snuggling her arms whilst she whimpered the last few cries out.
Her HEART was broken.
Her sanity was SHATTERED.
Her LIFE WAS OBLITERATED.

Circe sake, Eliora.
Maddox pinched at the bridge of his nose, taking a breath to remind himself that, as an employee, she got her job done and was quite efficient. In that moment he also reminded himself of how empty the level felt when she'd quit.
Happy thoughts Quigley.
"Eliora....Eliora calm down. I'll get you more coffee. Would you like that, hm? Special coffee from the boss?" Yes? No more of that obscene wailing that felt just as disastrous as nails on chalkboard to his overly sensitive ears. He glanced down at his watch. His next meeting wasn't until 3. "What's say we go grab a cup across the street and you cuss and tell me all the mean things about the jerks who did it?"

SNIFFLE.
SNUFFLE.
She patted the floor and pouted at Maddox. "Come lay with meEEE." Please and thank you. Actually, no. The floor hurt. So Eliora crawled closer to his desk before climbing up and laying ON it. SORRY PAPERWORK.
"I'm stay here. You get coffee." She'd be right here when he got back.

Maybe still next week.
With her? Lay? Lay with her? On the floor without a cushion? His nose wrinkled at the thought but he had no time for further reaction, not when she was already climbing onto his table. Merlin was he glad his wife never sprung surprise visits in the middle of the day. His other employees however....well...this needed to be addressed before one wandered over.
Maddox eased away from his desk, putting enough space between them to prevent himself from being slapped with any office suits for misconduct.
He'd been about to insist once more that she get off the table and allow them to act like adults but figured in the end...this may be a good chance at escape.
The cat man rose from his seat and started for the door. "I'll......I'll be back......"
Maybe. He'd have to think about it first.

Maybe. He'd have to think about it first.
Eliora pouted over her shoulder as her man Maddox moved towards the door. "Don't take too long. I get lonely when you're not here." But also it was very rare that she was going to be left in his office alone and she may have been able to find a spare key or something so on the nights she was working past midnight (thank merlin for her babysitter) she had somewhere to nap.
Method to her mad(dox)ness.
"Maddddddddy? Can I have a pay rise, too? It might make me happier." You couldn't blame her for trying, right?
Oh wait, wasn't she supposed to be upset? YUP. So with a LONG sigh, Eliora slipped into Maddox's chair and curled up with a sniffle. Maddox was missing out on this candy.

He had enough common sense to know that even though he VERY MUCH planned to take a while with this little coffee run, he wasn't about to say it. "Of course. Won't be long."er than two hours...is what he meant. No longer than two hours. He still had a department to run and an afternoon meeting that he needed to get her out of his office before its commencement.
Maddox grabbed the knob of his door, ready to yank it open and make his escape but it seemed she wasn't done talking.
"I..." Was it clear that he wasn't prepared for this when he came into work today? Granted, on any day of the week, he wasn't entirely equipped to handle Eliora but her coffee-less days seem to be the worst.
"How about we talk it over when I get back with the coffee and you've calmed down? Hmm? Sounds like a plan." But before she could protest--or wail--he high tailed it out of there.

Feet now up on Maddox's desk, Eliora smiled wide. "Good. We have catching up to do. Also, I want your opinion on my dates for this weekend." Because friends did that, right? And Ursy just wanted Eliora to date her family members which hadn't gone too well in the past so.... Maddox was now her go to person. He was welcome.
"Get me three cups, please." Because she wanted enough to LAST their chat and ALSO to make up for the one that had been stolen.
STOLEN.
SHE WAS GOING TO YELL AT SOMEONE FOR IT. YEP. STILL ANNOYED.
Not at Maddy though. "Mmmmmmmmmmmmkay, Maddy baby. Miss you already."
