Default Morning with the Ministry

Morning with the Ministry might be the most unique Ministry "orientation" your department heads and Minister have thought of yet. Wanting a more laid back and quiet start to the Ministry, they have worked just as hard to bring you this quaint morning event.

As you make your way into the Atrium, the first thing you might noticed are the various stations run by your department heads and even the Minister himself. Hoping you are hungry, the Minister can be found helping make waffles and pancakes for you to enjoy. So grab a plate and get as many as you think you can eat! You may then notice a table to add whatever toppings your stomach would like; from fruit, to syrups, nuts, or candies there is something for everyone. If waffles and pancakes aren't your thing, then maybe you are craving something from the build your own smoothie bowl. Grab a bowl and away you go to the smoothie of your dreams. If you need help don't hesitate to ask a department head for some assistance.

The mug is something utilized by Ministry employees on the daily, so why not have a special customized one all of your own? The third station boasts a coffee mug decorating opportunity, the perfect place to find your new favorite mug for those hard to focus mornings or sleepy feeling afternoons. Many shape and size mugs are available to pick from, so once you have decided jump right in to do some decorating.

As you visit each of these stations or just are enjoying seeing your fellow coworkers and catching up after the holiday, we hope you enjoy the music flowing through the Atrium brought you by the WWN.

Also nice to see? The Fountain of the Magical Brethren back in all its shiny glory.

So get yourself some food and find some colleagues and new friends to mingle with. Welcome to a new year at the Ministry of Magic!

If Jake noticed anything in MacAfee's expression, it would have been discernible only in a slight raise of the eyebrows. So clearly he had indeed noticed something; two decades or so in law enforcement to thank for that, but the lad was safe from any kind of remark, other than a, "Have fun with that," as Jake huffed a subtle laugh to himself and left the new personal assistant to his introductions.

"Thanks," he said now to Penelope, checking over the mug; it did indeed seem to be able to watch him from all angles. "I think my subconscious is trying to tell me something." Not sure what though. Eyes everywhere? All-seeing eye? Like that Sauron fella? Milo might like this googly mug... or he'd hate it and not come within fifty feet of it. Kids, man. Anyway. That last was for Penelope's benefit or really anyone who happened to hear it, as the Auror was partaking in, ah, perhaps more important conversations than googly mug analysis. Speaking of, he looked at the other woman (Laurel) again. "No. Or maybe, I don't know. I was joking." Mostly. Jake's eyes flicked between the woman and the man (Aaron) who had arrived to join her, smiled at both, and turned his attention instead back to the room.

Just for a cursory look, and maybe another glance towards the entrances, and then the lifts. Still nothing. Merlin. Maybe he could just quietly duck out and go help. He doubted anyone would mind.

_____

Kaiser glanced towards the Minister after the new Senior Undersecretary's comment, his expression briefly - blink-and-you'll-miss-it - pained. ".. Yes. Sometimes." No offence to Mr Hollingberry or anything, but... yeah. The man was too warm and welcoming for his own good sometimes. And understanding. Forgiving. Kaiser wasn't stupid enough - nor familiar enough - to say it to his face, especially not so bluntly, especially not when he benefited from it too, but... yes.

It was while looking at Mr Hollingberry that Kaiser caught sight of Gunnar and Alessandro - a sight that in turn caught him entirely off guard, as he'd not expected to see either, and had missed the introductions what with being preoccupied with Elio. But he recovered quickly, and let his gaze pass over both, and back instead to those in his immediate vicinity, silently hoping they were here for Gunnar, and not for Alessandro. If so, he would speak to the former only once the latter was not present. If not... well.

As for the kid, his name was covered, and Kaiser nodded to confirm. "Elio. He's my, ah, my son. Just turned three," he said to Mrs James, tacking that last part on because it tended to be the follow-up question. He tapped the wriggling Elio lightly on the chest with an index finger, and directed his attention towards the Senior Undersecretary; almost instantly, the straining to get away became a little less pronounced. Lapped up attention, this kid. Didn't seem to care where it came from. No self-preservation skills. "He wants to see Mr Hollinberry," Kaiser added, by way of explanation, thankful it was more professional to not just outright say 'Charles', as that would be Elio's cue to pick up the heart-rending tears until he found himself in the Minister's giant grandfatherly arms.

When Candela introduced herself, however, Kaiser went suddenly quiet. Again, hard to say for sure why he. Maybe just to allow her the time and space to talk for herself, woman to woman, without his intruding. Maybe it was something to do with there being a new Senior Undersecretary - a stark betrayal and a huge relief all at once - requiring new introductions. Maybe it was mention of the battle. Maybe all of the above, and then some. He left his attention drift away, but was brought sharply back by a sudden crushing pressure on his hand. Kaiser squeezed Candela's hand back almost automatically - twice, one, two - though her grip had relaxed pretty quickly. He didn't question it, didn't linger on it, did not allow himself to fret in this moment, all things considered.

"Cześć." This was to Tomasz, and Kaiser smiled his way too, made sure to speak clearly while facing his friend head on. "Yes, this is Elio. Will you join us after the orientation? You can meet him properly." Unless Tomasz had a shift today, of course.

For a tiny three year old, Elio really was deceptively heavy, or maybe Kaiser had just been carrying him for too long; he wasn't exactly a Tomasz Łaska levels of fitness, or really anything close, and the wriggling somehow made him seem heavier. Any time Charles wanted to swoop in and take over for babysitting purposes, Kaiser was ready to let him.

Airey's arms were, in fact, still moving...but they were also kind of wafting a bit. Like a bird trying to take off and fly but really not knowing how to do it. Not any up and down flapping but more awkward lateral movements. Needless to say, a hug did not commence...but he did place a paternal hand on her shoulder. Which would have been fine and well if he had not added a couple of pats.

And then a couple to her head.

And then a couple more to her shoulder.

Yes. Good.

Just as well too, seeing as he had caught the subtle whitening of her knuckles when his Flamsteed Shuffle had begun. That made two of them walking straight on into painfully awkward territory.

"No need for such a thing, Miss Gre---Mrs. Grimm," he assured her with a smile. And ONE of these days he would call her the correct name. His students seemed to engrain themselves in his memory as he met them. So once they grew up and left the Hogwarts nest...it was hard to associate them with grown men and women. Penelope was still that little brunette first year, sitting on the stool in front of all her peers and having the Sorting Hat placed upon her head. "Rather, no thanks necessary. As many years as we are post our Hogwarts careers...it will always be my duty to protect my students."

* * * * * * * * * *

Chuckling at Sachin's whispered words and simply bowed his head as the ambassador departed to mingle elsewhere, among them the lovely Jane who he also bowed his head to in respect and admiration. Conley likewise received a playful sort of wink and cheers with the flipper before he resume his own duties on the station. Which naturally meant more pancakes for dear sweet Genevieve...

...who was scolding him and it surely must be a comical scene to some in seeing a nearly 80 year old man be rendered to the disposition of a kicked cruppy by a woman half his age and with such ease. Though only for a moment, this fire and tenacity was precisely what had made Charles adore Genevieve all the way back when he had first met her at the ripe age of 17. Truly a positive influence on how own little ray of divine sunshine's life. "True as it may be," he hummed in response, the smile easily creeping back to his lips. "I do hope it is all not causing you misery."

And please refrain from from heckling his employees and their guests with a fork, Genevieve.

Beaming at the young man, Charles served him three smiley face pancakes. Strapping young man like him required more than one pancake and surely he was just being modest in his request. "There you are, my boy," he beamed while his chest puffed out and he offered his non flipper wielding hand for a proper handshake. "A pleasure indeed, Mr. Kinsley. Of Wigtown Wanderers fame, if I am not mistaken?" The Minister offered the boy a quick wink and little tap to his own nose. "I look forward to witnessing your contributions...and not simply because you favor my pancakes." His granddaughter was the true quidditch fan, but Charles knew a thing or two and had indulged his fair share of conversations.

Moving on to some starry eyed and sunnies wearing emoji pancake making, he found his attention drawn by the appearance of two new young men - one a new employee! "Ah, a pleasure indeed," he greeted the duo in standard boisterous grandfather. The name, Toussaint, of course rang a bell and reminded him that he needed to reach out to Evangeline and Angelo to dote on yet another pseudo grandchild. "And what will you be doing in the department, Mr. McCarthy?" he inquired while taking that extended hand and giving it a gentle shake. A gesture he repeated with the young Mr. Toussaint. "And you, my boy? What is it that you do?" He paused for a moment simply to BEAM at the young love. "And a most joyous of congratulations to you both on the pending nuptials. You know, as Minister, I am ordained to perform such ceremonies...should such a service be required."

Charles Hollingberry loved weddings, in one were not aware of this.

SPEAKING of...was his grandson here yet with his delightful aspiring auror girlfriend? Charles did very much wish to see the pair of them as well, offer some further praises to Missa for what he had heard from his own daughter of the battle at Hogwarts.

And ALSO speaking of...Kaiser had finally graced the Atrium of his presence and whatever it was he was discussing with Genevieve was surely a delight. Whatever his initial thoughts had been, Charles' brain almost entirely short circuited when he saw the little darling on his hip - and he did not mean that charming rooooomaaaate of his. Someone needed to take his flipper and apron, chef's hat as well, because he had a deep hankering to request a custom mug from the budding designer known as Elio.

Though before he could remove any of his pancake accomplices, Aurora's personal assistant was complimenting his efforts. "Why thank you, Mr. Cohen," he smiled with a salute of his flipper. "Raising four children and having five grandchildren meant I needed to get a bit creative with special Sunday breakfasts." Go big or go home, right?

Speaking of going big and children, Charles removed his chef's hat and passed his flipper on over to another Minister's Office employee to carry on, the man made his way over towards Kaiser and his sweet sweet child with his arms outstretched. "Elio, my little dumpling. Come here and let me see just how big you've grown!" Could he tell that, perhaps, Kaiser was ready to unload the 3-year-old? It was possible, but Charles hardly needed an excuse to dote on the little boy. "I wonder if, with your daddy's help, after I give this very important speech you might do me the honor of decorating a mug for me? Bobo can help you too. I heard she is quite the artist." This was all, naturally, said in front of Kaiser and Candela as he jovially relieved the little boy from his daddy temporarily and gave him a bit of a 'nose nose'. "We'll both be right back," he smiled over towards the couple. "Important matter to attend do and Elio here can help me with it."

BY looking ABSOLUTELY adorable with those big eyes and perfect little curls.

Balancing the 3-year-old on his side, Charles moved to grab himself a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice and then moved over towards the small stage set up in front of the reinstated fountain. The former fountain had been curiously difficult to remove, and not because of the Gubraithian Fire which was now being safely kept on Level Four. But there had been more than a few hiccups, so he had been informed, and complicated spellwork. Cursebreakers had been called in and it was...concerning to say the least. While his office had been the ones initially in charge of the removal of the harmful décor, but had since been passed on to the capable hands of Raini and the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes.

Collecting a spoon as well and Sonorus cast, Charles gingerly tap tap tapped on the glass to draw the attention of the Atrium to his person...while also giving Elio a small squeeze to accomplish the task.

"Hello, good morning, and welcome back to our Ministry of Magic," he began, the sparkle had properly returned to his eyes and those who had been present with last year's event would find the differences between the bewitched Minister and the one before them now in the details. "We are all very fortunate to be here today to usher in a new year and one that will serve as a catalyst for change in our wizarding world. Time will be required to heal from the damage cause by the Third Wizarding War and much progress has already been made. Laws removed and rewritten by the Neo Alliance have been rectified and, as you can see, the ambiance of the Ministry mostly restored. I am truly...deeply humbled to be able to stand before you now, reinstated as your Minister for Magic, and would not be able to do so today where it not for each and every individual who believed and fought for our cause, no matter how small the contribution. There is much work to be done and lessons to be learned...and together we will prosper. Among the changes within the Ministry itself comes in the form of your leaders..." Charles paused again, taking a breath during the transition and after announcing each member of the team would also be offering pause. It was regrettable that Fletcher had resigned from his position, but Charles understood the necessity. "In the Minister's Office, we welcome Genevieve James who has previously served the Ministry as an auror for well over two decades. In Magical Law Enforcement we have Jake Upstead, a former hit wizard and auror with two decades of experience in the department and took on the role immediately following the conclusion of the war and continues to work tirelessly in effort to bring all sympathizers and those who have committed crimes against this wizarding nation and world to justice. In Magical Accidents and Catastrophes is Raini Youngbird, who also took up the position in the weeks following the end of the war and will be leading further efforts to remove the decorative traces of the Neo Alliance around the Ministry. With the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, we have Aurora Bagnold continuing the position and who helped lead a successful global retrieval mission of dragons who had escaped from various reserves around the United Kingdom. With the Department of Environmental Regulation & Protection, we welcome Forrest Roberts III. Conley Phora, who also assisted with the dragon retrieval mission as well as successfully lead his department in resolving numerous cases of identity theft, continues his tenure with the Department of International Magical Cooperation. The Department of Magical Transportation welcomes the exuberant Anna Marie Howard and Peggy Laplace continues with Magical Games and Sports. Thanks in part to the research of Unspeakable, Jane Howard, Airey Flamsteed also continues his role as department head for the Department of Mysteries."

Turning back to Nina, Theodore’s face has adjusted back to normality once he was ready to respond. “Mostly just a surprise. Still delicious.” That was indeed the truth.

Theodore eyed the burnt pancake that Conley placed onto Alexander’s plate. Uhhh… he thought the ministers pancakes looked much better. Still, he offered the man an encouraging smile.

"Ya I have heard of them, I use to go and watch them with my parents when I was younger" Alexanxder told him as he took a bite of the pancake, it didnt't taste too bad as he noticed the look on Theodore's face. He smiled and nodded back politely to Kat.

Jane was regretting her impulse to come greet Conley as she watched Minister Hollingberry dish out pancakes--his efforts looked vastly superior to the one she had on her plate. But she didn't want to hurt Conley's feelings by asking someone else. Anyway, it was the coffee that really mattered (maybe she could grab a muffin off the table on her way out).

She noticed her boss, Airey Flamsteed as she turned to look at the crowd--well, it was hard to miss him when he was flapping his arms like that. She started to catch his attention, but the man seemed busy talking to a woman who'd come up to him. Good Merlin, was he going to hug her?!? No, false alarm. Jane thought perhaps her portkey-lag was making her see things. She wondered if Airey would notice that she'd brought his cup with her to the gathering.

Before she could move away, though, the Minister began his opening remarks, so Jane stood aside and listened respectfully. She looked around with interest at the new department heads. She was a little surprised to see Jake Upstead was the head of Magical Law Enforcement. Wasn't he the father of that student, Nem, that Violet had told her such stories about at the end of the last Hogwarts term? If so, Jane thought that maybe law enforcement should begin at home with that one.

With his voracious hunger sated by the plate of banana pancakes, Damian was now seeking to quench his thirst. His ever-standing cane in hand, he rose once more to his feet. That right leg of his had good days and bad days, and this was one of the rough ones.

Moving steadily through the throngs of people gathered at the various tables, one of the first he recognized was Jane. Damian wanted to tell his fellow dweller of the death chamber about how hard he worked over the holidays. He wanted to prove to her that he was more than just some washed up minor celebrity. He wanted her to be proud of him. Why?

Venturing further, the unspeakable overheard Oceanus and Stella. Not to be dropping eaves, but Damian couldn't help but smile at the mention of babies. Perhaps the shadow of war was fading, and life was finding it's way again. As tired and exhausted as he was, his heart was bolstered by hope.

Finally, he reached Dottie. She looked nervous, and was eating pancakes with her hands. If she was trying to be another strange unspeakable, like himself, the young woman was doing a great job. "I assure you, she comes highly recommended. Something of a prodigy, I hear." Damian said to Gabriel, while beaming proudly.

And now it seemed time for the Minister's opening remarks. There was so much going on, he could barely keep up.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Sachin really had no idea why Jane kept referring to Conley by his surname. Weren’t the two friends? He caught the look from Conley and sent the man an amused half smile. Maybe Conley still wasn’t used to hearing their names together? “Namaste, Jane.’’ Sachin gave her a warm smile, which faltered a bit as Conley made a mess with the pancake batter. Honestly, his husband was terrible at this sort of thing. “Couldn’t have asked for life to be any better,’’ Sachin replied brightly to Jane. “It’s just regular, boring domestic life-” He shot a look at his husband before chuckling. “Just joking!” Back to Jane. “Seriously, I’m content. How about you? Looking forward to another year at the Ministry?”

And there was another burnt pancake on his plate. “Thanks, Con. Two’s enough, I think.’’ Again… Sachin would be needing a lot of syrup. As for the potential morning tradition? Well, the Ambassador was more than willing to let Conley have das lakh {a million} chances at practicing before Sachin let him fly solo. He briefly rolled his eyes, amused smile in place at the mention of grilled cheese. Yes, Sachin knew what you were implying, Con.

Speech time. Sachin took a welcomed break in eating those burnt pancakes to give his attention to Charles.

Jane noticed that both Sachin and Conley seemed a little taken aback by her use of Conley's surname. She had meant it as wry humour and had thought it would be obvious, but apparently not. She sighed inwardly--she had had this problem all her life; no one seemed to get her sense of humour. Oh well.

Was she looking forward to another year at the Ministry? she pondered to herself as the Minister continued his speech. She wasn't sure. She was excited to be beginning a new phase of her research, but she also felt some anxiety about it, for she knew that it would not be easy. Not easy at all.

But that wouldn't stop her from going on with the Work.

Who Am I? Ern's 2460FUN

Ministry events were all rather the same, Alessandro mused, as he watched people awkwardly attempt small-talk. The one notable exception was the event last year where there had been an entire coup. Tragic, naturally. But thrilling. And certainly broke up the monotony of pancakes.

Still Al was in attendance to be arm candy and arm candy did not have opinions on how thrilling or not thrilling soirees were. No, arm candy stood proudly on their future husband's arm and made small talk with all kinds of ministry people, including the Minister for Magic.

He turned on the Toussaint charm, aptly named as he was both a Toussaint and charming, and shook the Minister's outstretched hand. "Delighted, sir." He pressed his hand into Gunnar's back and added, "We'll keep that in mind, Minister." If he didn't get into the specifics of what he did, well, it must have been because Alessandro didn't hear the question. Surely.

The brunette raised a hand in brief hello to both Nina and Calyx. Belatedly, he whispered to Gunnar, "We ought to have them over soon. Nina will no doubt be missing you." And she was a delight, too.

People who were not a delight and not acknowledged were also in attendance, it seemed. Al didn't pretend he didn't see Kaiser, but he didn't make any significant moves to bury the hatchet, as it were. He liked the hatchet right where it was-- in Kaiser's back.

Around the time that Minster Hollingberry began discussing the members of his senior staff, the Fountain of Magical Brethren made an odd burbling sound. It was followed by popping sparks that emanated from the tip of the Wizard’s wand. The Witch’s wand followed with encore sparks and the water spurting from both the tips of the Witch and the Wizard’s wands started forming the shape of the Deathly Hallows.

Was it your imagination or was the water also turning a deep dark shade of red?

By the time Hollingberry stopped talking the entire pool was a deep crimson color and the Deathly Hallows shapes jetting from the tips of both wands certainly did not look like they had any intention of going away.

Theodore had never been this happy in his entire life. He felt important, he felt like he had purpose. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly here, especially the minister for magic. Yes, he was a little bit of a fangirl, but honestly, he didn’t think he’d get the ministers time of day today. But wait - Charles KNEW who he was already??! The man blinked a few times in response, suddenly doubting his own history of being on the professional team. Theodore extended his hand and offered a firm handshake.

That’s right, sir.” His eyes were wide and full of wonder. “A fan of the sport, then?” I mean, who wasn’t a fan of Quidditch in this world? It was a dumb question, really, but he was a little flustered.

Thank you very much.” For the pancakes, and his time. Theodore took the plate of three pancakes and started to tuck in. It was the goooood stuff.

Also, what?! Alexander also knew of his past sporting career?! Theodore couldn’t believe it, mostly because it was a very long time ago now, and he wasn’t really relevant anymore. “Wow, that’s awesome, thanks, mate.” Thanks for taking the time to watch, he meant. Theodore grinned at him, just another fan to add to the list.

He piped down when Charles started his speech, bowing his head a little when he discussed the happenings of last year during the wizarding war. Theodore was lucky to have kept a low profile during the events and wasn’t so affected, however he felt an immense sense of guilt for not playing his part in the wizarding community. Still, he was here now, to hopefully give back.

Theodore looked to each of the names being mentioned in the senior staff, since it’s good to keep track of important people. And then… what was that bubbling sound?

Uhhhh… was this a special trick of the fountain? A bit like how fireworks are often used to celebrate an occasion. This was Theo’s thinking at first, so he smiled at the display. It wasn’t until the water started to turn a shade of red that his smile disappeared. That was an… interesting choice of colour. Suddenly he felt really uneasy, his eyes darting towards all of those important people just mentioned.

Was it your imagination or was the water also turning a deep dark shade of red?

By the time Hollingberry stopped talking the entire pool was a deep crimson color and the Deathly Hallows shapes jetting from the tips of both wands certainly did not look like they had any intention of going away.
Having finally chosen a place along the wall out of the way of all the ridiculous fawning over faded sports stars (hey, he was every bit as handsome as Kinsley and some would say more so and an auror to boot, which was WAY more impressive than a washed-up Quidditch player) and hungry people grabbing food (did people need reminding that this was still the Ministry?), Ronan leaned against the wall with his arms crossed, watching the events unfold. Bored out of his mind, if anyone cared. And wondering who the harebrained idiots were that brought their kids to this thing. Yes, it was advertised as a breakfast event, but definitely not a 'bring your children to work' thing.

He still had his eyes scanning the atrium while the minister gave his speech, so he noticed the moment it started its weirdness. Definitely didn't improve the looks of the ridiculous thing. In fact, now it reminded him of something one would see in one of those disaster/doomsday films some people liked so much. Still, the auror stepped over to the fountain to investigate, casting various wordless revealing spells and hoping to unveil whatever or whomever had caused the sudden change in the thing.

Okay, so apparently she was, like, invisible or something. Cool, cool. Thankfully she wasn't feeling hangry or anything. Seriously, she'd had cereal for breakfast just in case. So she was all set, thanks anyway. It did make her wonder about her decision to come to work here, though. Maybe she should've found a job in muggle London? But then she'd be stuck working as a waitress or something and she'd heard things about those jobs. About how people were rude and such. No thank you. But if people were going to be rude here too....

It was this that Whitney was contemplating as the minister began his speech. And what she kept contemplating as he went on. At least until the fountain did its thing. "Um...is it supposed to do that?" she asked the crowd as a whole, even as someone approached the fountain.

And yes, he did catch that look from you Mr. Fancy Beard (Theordore). Not everyone was a top chief, alright? And not everyone could grow a beard like that. Conley found himself wondering if he could and more importantly if Sachin would like it. He stole another pancake from Charles and tossed it on Mr. Fancy Beard’s plate. ”Enjoy!”

It was a nice outing before I start on my new project this year. And how about our friend from the Pet and Plant Cafe?" she continued, looking from Conley to Sachin and back again. "Was he allowed to come home with you?" Jane, for some reason, really wished for that cat to have found a home. He didn't seem that taken with her, or she would have adopted him herself.

Jane looked down at her plate and contemplated the partial pancake, which managed to be both burnt and underdone all at once--it did not look like it would help her portkey-lag. Perhaps if she put some jam in it and rolled it up like a German pancake.

He briefly rolled his eyes, amused smile in place at the mention of grilled cheese. Yes, Sachin knew what you were implying, Con.

Speech time. Sachin took a welcomed break in eating those burnt pancakes to give his attention to Charles.

It seemed he’d have to catch up with Jane about her travels at another time if he wanted more specific details. That was fine. He was certain he could find time for a cup of tea with her again sometime soon. ”I haven’t traveled much around the holidays,” he admitted. The exception would be to their home in India, but that was more of a second home then a vacation. Perhaps they should try it some year. Pick a local and just go. He knew Nuremberg had quite the Christkindlesmarkt. Perhaps he would suggest it next year. As for the cat? Well, ”I haven’t really had the chance to talk to Sachin about it.” Was he turning a little pink in embarrassment. And yes, he felt a little bad about the cat still being in the café without a home when he could have brough him home a few weeks ago. ”A cat took a liking to me the other day on Level 4. He was rather sweet, but you take care of enough creatures at home. But perhaps we’ll go see if he takes to you,” he said to Sachin. ”When we’re done here?”

And since Sachin didn’t want another pancake he tossed it onto the plate of someone walking by. ”Go enjoy your breakfast Sach,” he said, finally shooing the man with his pancake flipper. He was certain his husband would likely find something better to eat then his half-cooked and burnt pancakes. Conley wasn’t stupid, he knew people were just taking them to make him feel better. ”Chai is over that way. Oh and decorate a mug for me.” He waved over to the drink station and then to the decorate your own mug station as he blew Sachin a kiss.

Conley looked up from the batter he was stirring around in an attempt to get the lumps out of at the sound of his name during Charles’ speech. He waved a shy hand as he felt eyes around the room turning towards him. Thankfully, Charles didn’t talk about him for long. Only…

That popping noise didn’t sound good, but maybe Charles had a surprise up his sleeves. Suddenly the water from the wizard and witches wand burst forth into that symbol he hoped he’d never see again. ”Um….” he waved his spatula at Youngbird ”Rani?” He motioned to the fountain just as the water started turning a deep shade of red. Could they ever just have an orientation that didn’t go wrong?

Adam had been here for a while. He’d just been busy stuffing his face with the cinnamon buns and orange juice he’d sniffed out. Last time he’d had cinnamon buns was at the Ski-outing the Ministry had sponsored a quite a few years ago. He still had a half-eaten one in his hand and was about to try his luck at the mug decorating. When he heard the popping noise. Even to a mostly blind man, he could tell that something was wrong. ”Nien,” he said upon hearing a young lady’s question. ” I do not zink so,” he said in his heavy German Accent. And something smelled funny. He sniffed his cinnamon bun, but that wasn’t it. He was half tempted to sniff the lady, but that would likely lead to him being beat up. Either by the lady or by his girlfriend.

Scottie had kept a low profile.

SO low in fact that he wasn't even sure he would show up to breakfast. And maybe he had shown up very late, looking frazzled at his last minute decision to come, but it seemed he either:

A. Should have stayed away due to the fountain suddenly doing THAT and making his stomach swell with bubbling and near crippling anxiety

or

B. DEFINITELY should have come because of the fountain suddenly doing THAT and he needed to STEP IN because Merlin forbid ANY remaining Alliance stuff continued to happen here at the ministry.

His wand drawn in the direction of the fountain, he looked around for, well, Fletchy.....but he had grown used to not seeing the man around. But it was his first instinct, always. His new instinct, now, was to look for Jake Upstead, his bossman.

He approached the fountain, wondering if the red......was, you know, blood.

Goldy was a vampire, after all.

And Scottie was not daft enough to stick anything iN the fountain.

Jane would rather have like Conley to steal her one of the fancy pancakes, too, but no such luck. She couldn't help smiling at the way he sneaked away the Minister's creations. Oh well, she would find something to eat if she couldn't make this half a half-burnt pancake do with a little jam. And hearing him shoo away his husband, Jane thought that she would follow his advice and go find a place to sit herself. She had seen her new colleague, Damian Pendragon walk by a little while ago and thought she might go find him and say hello.

As she turned away from the pancake station to look for her colleague Jane suddenly noticed the strange behavior of the Fountain and her blood ran cold. There was no question in her mind that this was not planned, nor was it meant for any good. She turned her head back to see if Conley or Minister Hollingberry had noticed it.

Genevieve didn't mind the mild tone the Minister used when talking to her. It was funny that they got along so well, considering they were vastly different people. But they did get along, and aside from that, she took her job very seriously. She would take an Unforgivable for the man.

It might not be an Unforgivable, but at the sight of the fountain spewing dark symbols and red water, Vivi was on her feet, her pancakes forgotten. She stepped in front of the Minister quickly, wand at her side. Was there danger to the Minister, or was this a moment to play down the scene as a prank? Get people out of there before they started to get unsettled...? "Minister? Perhaps you should give Elio back to his mother? We need to return to your office so Mr. Upstead can handle this breach with his staff."

Which hey, dealing with other college kids who didn't really want to be studying muggle studies but needed a gen-ed class wasn't exactly easy! So yes that counted in her book anyway.

"I've been hired in the Department of Mysteries." Which make her an unspeakable she thought. "But even if I knew things, which I don't since it's my first day and all, I couldn't tell you." Jeez!! Why was she babbling like a crazy person??

"What about you? Are you new to? Which department are you in." Okay ... deep breaths Dottie ... stop acting so strange!! Give the man a chance to reply. She always that the tendency to talk fast and ALOT when nervous... maybe she she start stuffing her face with pancakes then she couldn't talk .... she took a bite of one with her hands ... no syrup yet, so it wasn't messy.

Gabriel smiled when Dottie confirmed that, yes, she was new. It was reassuring to know he had good newbie senses. Especially because how embarrassing would it be if he asked someone if they were new, when in fact they'd been working at the Ministry for years or something? It would be very embarrassing.

He was so glad that wasn't the case.

"Department of Mysteries? That sounds...mysterious," he said. He'd never met someone from that department, what with it being...many many floors away, and also very secretive, or whatever. "I'm not new, no...I'm a...a third year YATI now, up in Magical Law Enforcement." It was surreal to be in his final year of the training program. If all went well, he'd be an Auror by this time next year. He paused, then asked, "What sort of student teaching did you do?"

Suddenly the Minister was speaking, though, and he redirected his attention to the old man. Blah blah, Mr. Upstead was the offial new head, other departments had new heads, okay, okay... he got distracted halfway through the speech by something seriously weird at the new fountain. Sparks? OH MERLIN. He grimaced at the Deathly Hallows shape the water started taking because hadn't they caught everybody yet? Apparently not. And when the water turned red, he pulled out his wand. Was Hollingberry done talking? He was done talking. "Uhhh...excuse me, Dottie, I should try to help," he said to his new acquaintance, before making his way toward the fountain to see if he could help investigate or something.

Sure, there were probably plenty of Real Aurors around, but maybe he could...usher people away? Keep space around the fountain? He glanced around, looking both for Mr. Upstead or even one of the Aurors, to see if there was anybody who could tell him what to do. There was a young guy from his department that he didn't know, and oh good, one of the Aurors. He didn't want to get in the way, but he was two thirds done with his training! Surely he could be useful.

"Can I help... get some of the people away from the fountain? Create a perimeter? Mr. Ronan?" he asked the Auror and other law enforcement folks who'd gathered around the fountain, spreading his arms to indicate how useful he could be.

Could Jake's mug of eyes be a subconscious message? "Maybe. Or maybe you just really like googly eyes." Could go either way really. Or maybe even both. Who really knew? If the mug was saying anything, it probably wasn't anything they didn't already know though. Keep an eye on things. Stay watchful. Constant vigilance. Etc.

The pats from Flamsteed were certainly...something. The tension gradually left her body with each one, now that her mind had registered the movements weren't toward her neck. An amused smile tugged at her lips.

"Well, I'm thanking you anyway." Didn't matter if it was necessary or not. And with that, she threw her arms around his neck. A hug was much less unsettling when she was the one to initiate it. And she preferred to not dwell on what-if's, but it wasn't hard to recognize that it was entirely possible she wouldn't be standing here now if he hadn't come to the right place at the right time. Duty or not, she was grateful, and gratitude wasn't enough to repay him, especially when she considered the ways she felt like she had failed him. There were certain what-if's that were harder for her to ignore. But this would have to do for now.

After a few seconds, she pulled away, quietly clearing her throat.

And then soon came the Minister's speech. Vivi had switched to the Minister's Office? Interesting.

Also interesting, but with far more sinister implications, was the fountain's sudden change. Her wand was in her hand immediately, instinctively stepping a bit in front of Professor Flamsteed, her eyes quickly scanning the room. Carter, Ferguson, and Melo were near the fountain, James had the Minister...and so far she had spotted no suspicious movement around the room. At least not yet.

---

After grabbing a smoothie, Regina had found a place off to the side and out of the way. She probably should try to mingle, but she was feeling just a little bit on edge. Everything looked fine, or at least calm, but she was still feeling uneasy. Not that that was an uncommon thing for her to feel just about anywhere though. And maybe she was just hungry anyway. Maybe she'd feel better after finishing her smoothie.

She turned to listen to the Minister when he stepped up to give his speech, pleased to see that he was looking fully recovered. Though she was also disappointed to hear Fletcher wasn't Senior Undersecretary now. She liked him. Not that she had anything against Genevieve James, since she didn't actually know her personally. But that anxious feeling was back again. Aurors were...kind of intimidating and scary, but hopefully everything would be fine.

...You know, until the fountain had a mind of its own. Um??? Regina did not like the scarlet color of that...water. That was not...a good sign. And even though it was part of his job and he was fully capable of taking care of himself, it made her even more nervous seeing Scott over there investigating the fountain. Merlin, please be careful.

”I’ll have to take your word for it,” she smiled politely, still silently judging him (Theodore) for the face he pulled. Nina wouldn’t ever dream of biting into something without knowing exactly what it was. This was one of the few life lessons she had learned while attending Hogwarts. Not caring to continue conversing with him, Nina shifted her attention to the perky Muffin Attendant (Peggy) again. ”Thank you,” she smiled politely, speaking on behalf of herself and her fiancé.

Of course, Neen likely wouldn’t be eating any muffins, but she still picked out the fluffiest one for Calyx to enjoy after he was done with the two he already had in hand. How he managed to eat so much was a mystery far beyond anything Nina could ever hope to understand - but it was just as much endearing as it was concerning, so Nina tried her best not to question it. Instead, she nuzzled her head against him, only looking up when she heard her name.

Calloway!” Did he know how happy it made her that he said hello to Calyx too? ”You two and your love of food, honestly,” she shook her head as she laughed quietly. There was a whole lot of second hand embarrassment being felt at the moment, but it helped to remind herself that this wasn’t her own place of work. It was a casual event. Even though the Minister for Magic was right there. This was fine. He probably liked bacon too. This was Calyx's day and Nina wouldn't be ruining it with intrusive thoughts.

Still, Nina squeezed Calyx’s arm, hoping to help ground him in the present moment. Did he see that Alessandro had waved in their direction? They really must make their way over to say hello soon, but for now, Nina settled for a smile. One that she hoped Ethan noticed as well, if he were to look in her direction.

Nina was just about to suggest to both Calyx and Calloway, that they work their way towards another one of the breakfast stations, but stopped herself short just as the Minister gave his speech. Though Nina was listening attentively, popping sparks emitted from the fountain gave Nina enough of a spook that she gasped rather loudly, pulling Calyx close as a reflex. Needless to say, she was no longer listening to any part of the Minister's speech. Her preoccupation with the fountain took precedence. If sparks came flying in her direction, she'd be ducking behind her boys. Thanks.

"I thought they did away with the neo-alliance."

Hi. Worried fiancé over here. Was it safe for Calyx and Calloway to be working at the Ministry?

Mr. Ronan? Under different circumstances, that would've brought an amused smile to his face. But the current circumstances required seriousness, unfortunately. "Yes, please Gabriel. Make sure only MLE get through." Just in case something really bad happened next.

"Ferguson!" Ronan called, spotting the man just standing there with his wand out. "Collect some of this water for testing." He summoned an empty vial (and its cork) and a pair of gloves (dragonhide, he wasn't stupid) and tossed them to Scottie. Think fast!

He wasn't spotting anything else suspicious yet either, but it could only be a matter of time. Hopefully. This soiree had been getting rather boring and he was ready for some action.

She put one more piece of glitter on the mugs ear before she asked. "And you are? You work on level 2 right?" Her precious Inner Eye had warned her that she’d encounter at least one MLE employee at the orientation event. "Three mugs?" she asked bewildered. "You want to make 3 mugs i thought you said two?"Laurel supposed the man in charge would put a stop to the man’s excessive mug decorating if he felt it necessary.

With the smile of someone who clearly noticed nothing at all, Jude simply nodded at the blonde and grinned without a care in the world. Well, almost. Laurel. Level 9. Now that he had a name to put to the face, he may actually stand a chance of remembering this woman. It was true that his memory was something of a sieve but if he really, really tried, there was a chance. Was he going to really try though? “Level 9? That’s uhh…the mystery place? Yeah? I think I’ve heard of that place.”

The wanderings of his mind were distracted when she mentioned him wanting to make three mugs instead of two. Was that really an issue? It was after all, only one more. “Oh, I mean…I want to? I don’t know if I should though. I want one and well, I wanted to make one for my brother too. And my parents… I’m not in their good books if ya can believe that, so I should get them one too,” the smile on his face now a little sheepish. Somehow, he always seemed to find himself in trouble. It was both a gift and a curse.

Speaking of said curse, Jude couldn’t help but cast a quick glance at his boss and grimace a little at the slight eyebrow raise. Luckily though, his new boss didn’t seem to have too much of a problem because he up and left. A sure sign that he was in the clear. Win. Turning his attention back to the task at hand and most specifically the mugs at hand, Jude continued to decorate them, adding more glitter and marker. Truth be told, he was lost in his own little world, something that often happened when he was actually busy with something that enthralled his mind. He couldn’t sit still to save his life but if he was truly interested in something and busy, he could be lost to the world for hours at a time. Another gift. It wasn’t at all surprising to those who knew him even the slightest at all that the long-haired teen didn’t turn at the sound of the clinking of the glasses and most certainly didn’t pay attention to the minister’s new speech. Although, that may have been intentional. Those sorts of speeches were always long winded and slightly tedious.

Was it your imagination or was the water also turning a deep dark shade of red?

By the time Hollingberry stopped talking the entire pool was a deep crimson color and the Deathly Hallows shapes jetting from the tips of both wands certainly did not look like they had any intention of going away.

Was he being a tad loud? Maybe just a little bit but it was his first proper day back after all and how would everyone know that his pancakes were the best if he did not flaunt them and sell them with his booming voice? Clearly his tactics had worked because one of his fellow Head of Departments had noticed his fresh produce. “Of course. Of course. Are you a sweet or savoury type of person Aurora? Or would you like a surprise? I’ve been told I’m an excellent judge of these things you know.” That wasn’t strictly true. Well, he said it about himself but Aurora didn’t need to know that, did she?

Just as he was about to whip something up however, the older gentleman heard the gentle tapping that signified the start of a speech and moved his hands politely behind his back as if to symbolise that he was intently listening, which he was of course. All in all, he was somewhat happy with the direction of the speech. Having only watched on from a distance as the world seemed to succumb to madness last summer, it was pleasing that the wrongs that had been done were slowly being undone.

When his ears heard the word leaders, he stood a little straighter. As name after name was introduced, he waited with baited breath. Would he have to give a speech? Sure, he’d planned to give one to his own department but not to the whole ministry! This would have taken days to plan and then he’d need his wife to check it for errors because he sure couldn’t craft a masterpiece alone.

Luckily however, there seemed to be no need for a speech. Instead, he simply raised his hand and give a small wave followed by a stern, fatherly look that he usually kept for his children when they’d attempt something stupid. The look that clearly said Are you sure you want to do that?’ but in a caring sort of way.

Just as he was about to turn back to his valued customers, his eyes began roaming the room for a weird gurgling sound. They quickly moved to the sparks that came flitting out of the Fountain of Magical Brotheren. Was it supposed to do that? He hadn’t been made aware but that was hardly a surprise. It became apparently clear however that this wasn’t planned at all when the wizards’ wands started to form a somewhat familiar shape.

Doing his best not to lose track of the speech, Forrest’s eyes continued to move around the room in search of the source of this magic. The endearing look that had previously been on his face now completely gone only to be replaced by that of a steely glare. His wife would not be happy when she found out. Noticing that others in the room had also spotted the fountain, he eyed them suspiciously, moving his gaze from person to person in search of a hint of mischief. He found none. It was like looking for a specific tentacular on.

It took him a moment for him to actually spot the red that was slowly spreading across the pool but when he did, a small sigh whistled through his lips and, with a resigned look, he undid his apron and threw it over the shoulder of his blue chequered shirt and made towards the minister, ready to offer a helping hand for whatever it was that was about to happen next. Jules really wouldn’t be happy if he returned home from work late after the first day but it was what it was. He’d agreed to come back and sometimes, you have to get your hands deep in the dirt.

Scottie heard his name and caught the vial without second thought. He hadn't noticed Regina here, and he supposed they could have arrived together if he had thought about it....but he hadn't even known if he was coming. Yikes. What if she hated him forever now?

Regardless, he had MLE stuff to do now. Using his wand, he magicked some of the red liquid into the vial. You know, after putting on the gloves. He had his own on him, but Ronan had very nicely thrown him some so...he wasn't going to decline. Also, he was doing this without much thinking because it had to be SWIFT. FAST. COOL. CALM. COLLECTED.

Collected, much like the red liquid.

"Where's Mr. Upstead?" he asked, looking around.

"Ah, of course. Sounds quite lovely," Raini told Alexander as the young man informed him about his trip to Australia. "My daughter visited Australia not long ago. Can't say I've ever been though." Perhaps it was something to put on his bucket list. And then he gave him a short nod as the young man informed him that he was indeed fine on his own. Very good then as his queue was beginning to fill up and he had other smoothies to make, it would seem.

"Have I?" Raini looked over at Forrest with the hint of an amused smile while he tended to more fruit. "You'll forgive me then. Just enthusiastic to share your garden spoils then?" He continued to joke lightly in his deadpan way. But he was genuine in the sentiment that he would like to try some later. He really did expect his produce to be superb.

Raini thought over Aurora's ideas and he certainly wanted to encourage her creativity. "Vegan technically includes fruit as well, though no dairy, so that could be a good idea. Though we could do one that is only vegetables." Didn't sound all that appetizing to him though as smoothies tended to need the sweetness of fruits to taste good. "Those are good ideas though. Do you want to prepare a menu board?" Or maybe when the crowd died down a little.

The Department Head gave the young woman (Bette) a kind smile as she thanked him for the smoothie. "You are quite welcome. And welcome to the Ministry. I'm fairly new myself, I've only been here since middle of last year. Raini Youngbird, department head of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes," he added an introduction in kind. Spirits, he was talking a lot, wasn't he?

And the next person in line was a familiar one, one of his employees in fact. "Good morning, Penelope," he pleasantly returned the greeting to the young woman. "Would you like any help making a smoothie?" he asked, noticing her bowl of fruit. Of course she could handle it on her own if she wanted, or just take the bowl of fruit instead. It was just then that the Minister called for attention and he silently turned his eyes to the older man as he spoke. Oh.. he hadn't been expecting to be singled out and introduced that way, but he supposed he should have. He did quietly join the team in the middle of the year and it was likely that many people would not be familiar with him, save his own employees. When attention was directed to him, he simply bowed his head in recognition.

But soon noises from the fountain caught Raini's attention and he looked up, wondering if this was some sort of last minute fireworks display that he'd not been told about. But when the sparks began to form the deathly hallows symbol and the water began to run red, he was certain that this had not been in their plans. He glanced over at Conley when he heard him call his name and he gave him a solemn nod before stepping out from behind his station.

"Stay calm, everyone," he called out to the immediate vicinity in his tranquil, yet powerful voice. Certainly people were concerned, but hopefully they could keep any chaos at bay. "Penelope, come with me," he asked of his employee who was still near the smoothies. "Let's stay out of the way of Law Enforcement as they do their jobs, but we must investigate the nature of this magic." And he could certainly use one of his Spell Researchers to assist with that. Expecting her to follow, he headed over towards the fountain and silently began casting spell-revealing charms to investigate just what they were dealing with.

__________

Gunnar knew how to be charming when the situation called for it and he smiled widely as he shook the Minister's hand. "Good to meet you, sir. I'll be working in Magical Creatures as a Beast Protection Officer." He glanced to Alessandro, then back to the Minister with a nod. "Yes, thank you, Minister. We will definitely keep that in mind." No real plans had been made yet, but it was very kind of Hollingberry to offer to marry them. Meanwhile, could they grab a plate of these smiley face pancakes? They were...fun. But he wasn't sure with that woman (Vivi) waving her fork at him. He gave her a careful side-eye, then took a plate of pancakes for himself.

He leaned closer to his fiancé as he whispered to him, his eyes finding Nina and Calyx in the crowd again. He, too, offered them a wave, then nodded to Alessandro. "Sure, that'll be nice. We have the room to entertain." And he quite liked their new house. Hearing his name, Gunnar turned to look at the man next to him line, apparently a co-worker, Jasper. Immediately, he gave him a polite smile. "Yes, Gunnar. McCarthy. Good to meet you." He extended a hand for him to shake, glad to meet another in his department. Noting his look towards the next station, he added, "We're actually headed over there as well." He did want to speak to his boss while here and make a good impression.

Before they did head anywhere else, Gunnar noticed who all was coming over to speak with the Minister near where they stood. "Hello, Candela.. Tomasz.. Kaiser.." He gave them a collective nod in greeting - it would have been quite rude not to acknowledge them at all standing so close to them - but they were moving on now... Or maybe not, since the Minister was now starting his speech.

It was the same sort of leadership platitudes that he would expect, but Gunnar stood by quietly and respectfully as the man spoke, offering his polite applause when he finished. And then his attention was drawn to the popping and sparks from the fountain, expecting some sort of show. But he furrowed his brow when the sparks turned to the deathly hallows symbol and the water turned red. Surely that wasn't blood, but clearly someone was trying to send a message. "I'm not sure I like the looks of that," he mentioned quietly to his fiancé next to him.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Lucille had been listening to the Minister's speech when her attention was diverted thanks to the Fountain of Magical Brethren's rather sinister display. It was as if the fountain was against the changes to the Ministry.

Evidence collection was needed but she wasn't too sure what to collect. Should she collect some of the crimson "water" as Scottie had done? Lucille turned the pair of mittens she had in her coat pocket into a pair of dragon-hide gloves and put them on as quick as she could. "Has anyone got an empty vial so I can collect some evidence?"

Penelope softly smiled as she exchanged pleasantries with her department head. ”I’m good with just a fruit bowl for now, thank you.” Penelope turned her attention to the Minister as he started speaking, eating her fruit while she listened to his speech. Naturally she was already familiar with her own department head who had of course joined them after she had played a role in the apprehension of her former department head. She had never liked Sian much before the woman had been exposed as a Neo-Alliance member anyway, and the change in department leadership was a welcome one.

What was going on? Was that blood in the fountain? Or if not, perhaps something that was supposed to threaten bloodshed. Combined with the symbol the water had formed, she was fairly sure it was some type of warning or threat. Perhaps there were surviving members of the Neo-Alliance determined to make a comeback? For now though, all hunches would have to be set aside because looking for something to confirm her assumption would only lead to a biased result or even lead her to the wrong conclusion. It was one of the principles of good research. She needed to leave her mind open to other possibilities. The use of logic and reasoning would allow her to deduce the facts of the situation. Everything had to be backed up by solid evidence.

”Yes sir. I’m on it.” Penelope followed her boss as instructed, at the ready to fulfill her duty and figure out what they were up against. With a wave of her wand, Penelope’s formal wear was gone and was replaced by an outfit that would be much more practical for working in. Time to get down and dirty doing some real investigative work. On one hand, this was a worrying incident that needed to be treated with caution and a thorough investigation because it was entirely possible this was a warning from a dangerous person who was out for blood, or that the fountain could be dangerous. On the other hand, Penelope was excited for the opportunity to work on a real case. It was like a puzzle that needed to be solved. She loved a good intellectually stimulating problem. Really she couldn’t ask for a better job than one that paid her to solve interesting problems. As bad as it was to have such a thing happen, it was a relief to be handed real work to do. This was far more interesting than having to make small talk with strangers.

Penelope summoned a crystal phial and a pair of dragonhide work gloves so she could collect a sample from the fountain for analysis. There were others collecting samples of the liquid as well but she would need her own sample for her department to test in the toxicology and analysis lab. After putting on the gloves, Penelope opened the phial and used her wand to carefully fill it with liquid from the fountain, making sure not even a single drop could touch her skin. Capping the phial, Penelope gently pocketed it and moved on to casting spells around the fountain that could reveal clues as to what sort of magical activity had taken place. ”Appare vestigium.” That one would show traces of magical activity. ”Apenbarria.” And that one would show her if any dark magic had been used. She continued with her wand work, casting spells that could help her in the investigation of what magic they were dealing with, determined to find something that would give her a clue as to what kind of magic had been used here.

For an alchemist, that was like saying, does an apple tree have apples? Jane had been about to try to collect a sample herself, but she noticed that Ministry employees were already taking samples right and left. This should really be coordinated, there shouldn't be that many sample floating around. Still, she handed one of the empty phials she always had about her to the Law Enforcement employee who'd asked as she walked past her on her way toward Scott Ferguson.

Jane appeared at Scott's elbow and, hoping he remembered her from the Order meetings last year, said to him in a low voice, "I'd really like to analyze some of that in the lab, if you have enough."
