Default Ministry of Magic Gala 2104

OOC: this event is set on January 11, 2104 - the SAME day as the Dragon Reservation field trip.
All Creatures employees would have been ordered to fall back and return to the Ministry
for this mandatory event

With the start of the new year comes the annual Ministry orientation event, arranged by the Department Heads; an opportunity for you to mix with your colleagues, the Ministry's brand new or returning employees. Though this year's event comes a bit later than usual after an extended break while an elite skeleton crew tied off a few loose ends and finished some much needed refurbishments. The atmosphere of this year's event, a suave and sophisticated gala, is not unlike that of a grand opening. Your invitation required that you adhere to the formal and elegant dress code.

Upon entering the Atrium, you will find that a table has been set up with party favours: small bags and boxes of varying quality. All bags at least contain lapel pins and name tags with each employee's job title, name, and blood status in fancy silver font. After passing through security and into the party proper, each Ministry employee will be able to find their own personal party favour thanks to the accompanying name tags, which also display blood status. The observant among you may note that the party favours are of the most supreme quality when destined for a pureblood, and diminish in this regard as they become intended for half-bloods, those who consort with muggle-borns and muggles, and muggle-borns themselves. Be sure to put those name tags on.

Chairs and tables are spaced throughout the Atrium, itself bedecked with white, silver, and black décor, leaving spaces all around for mixing and mingling. In one corner of the room, an orchestra of unmanned and enchanted musical instruments provide constant but subtle chamber music. If you pay attention, you may notice that only works by magical composers will be heard all evening. Along one side of the room, buffet tables hold a vast array of canapés and other hors d'oeuvres, and a range of beverages.

In spite of the opulence of the event, one significant change is likely to command your attention more than the rest. In the centre of the Atrium, where the Fountain of Magic Brethren once stood, a new towering marble structure now dominates the space. The Fountain for the Greater Good consists of a colossal levitating hand above a rippling pool of water, wielding a wand, and topped with Gubraithian Fire that nearly licks the ceiling. At its base, the Sign of the Deathly Hallows is engraved above the immortal words of Gellert Grindelwald: For the Greater Good.

Perhaps now it's starting to seem all too clear that the Ministry of Magic is not only ushering in a new year, but a new dawn.

In any case, he was too busy staring in horror at the statue he and Conley had come across. His only other reaction was gripping Conley’s hand so that his fingernails bit into the man’s skin. Sachin would tell Conley his thoughts when they were back home.

The Ambassador was grateful to be led in another direction. Still, the memory of what he had just seen was freshly etched in his brain. Food! Just the perfect distraction! Conley knew him well. Now… where were all the sweet foods? And who was this pretty lady? Conley was right; her dress was lovely. Sachin was glad to be introduced. After all, he was somewhat of a social butterfly. “Hello, Ms. Bagnold. Pleasure to meet you.’’ Sachin arched an eyebrow in Conley’s direction. Was his husband going to be possessive and protective throughout the event? “Are you looking forward to the challenges of being Department Head?” Because… you know, some persons took challenges in stride. “Ambassador to India,’’ Sachin answered, a hint of pride in his accent. “I have been since 2091.’’ Goodness! Had it been that long already?

Absently, since his mind was still on this mind blowing fact, Sachin followed his husband’s gaze to see Nykto and Jane. He raised his free hand to them in acknowledgement. Sometime after, the loud tapping of glass grabbed his attention. No surprise that it was time for the Minister’s speech. The only thing was, Sachin was not impressed by it.

Focusing back on Conley she smiled "It's a wonderful evening, you should really try the shrimp canapeés at the buffet tables, they are delicious." She said with a gesture to the entree dishees. "Got any mingling tips for a newbie department head?" She knew that Conley was an exprienced department head with many years under his belt.
Conley's husband Sachin more easy-going and social than his counterpart which was nice Aurora decided. Nodding, she beamed brightly "Yes, I'm very much looking forward to all the challenges that comes with my new position. I hope my department head role will make me grow as a leader and a person." But she was going to take it step by step and not rush into anything. That she had a personal assistant was going to make things a lot easier to organize. Aurora had never been one to shy away from a good challenge. She usually went in with both feet.

"India, I see. It's a very beautiful country, I've heard? Anyway Sachin if you have some free time could you mayhaps translate some creature documents for me? I can't read the text so for all I know it can be a request for a fwooper breeding licence or a zouwu gone missing." India had way too many languages.

Yes, Conley was going to be possessive all night long. Had the man not seen the statue? The Banners? How about the nametag Conley was wearing labeled “Half Blood?” Or the one Sachin was wearing that read “Muggle born?” Which wasn’t true by the way. Well, not entirely. Because it was possible that Sachin was muggle born. But it was also possible that the man was a pure blood. Between the two of them, someone had to worry- Ouch! Sachin had a grip on him for sure. Clearly despite his external calm his husband was just as upset at he was. Thing was, Sachin had always been a darn sight better at hiding it then Conley. That’s why Sachin was so good at his job.

It was also why Sachin was better at socializing then him. He tried to give Aurora his best smile. ”Alcohol,” he joked as he toasted her with his recently refilled glass. It was only a half-truth though, because he honestly did find alcohol to be very helpful at these events. ”A big smile and nimble feet help too. Keeps those who might cause trouble from cornering you.” His eyes lingered on Bain as he said it. And he hoped that Aurora caught his meaning. ”Also makes it a bit easier for your employees to find you.” He brought his attention back to Aurora and this time he did really smile. ”Also, repeating names. Helps you remember them.”

As Aurora and Sachin chatted, Conley let his attention rove over the crowd of people. He caught sight of Louise looking his way. She seemed concerned and he gave her just the slightest shake of his head, hoping she understood to keep her thoughts to herself and to come see him tomorrow at work. Especially once the Minster started talking. He really hoped she understood because Louise was one of his best employees and a very nice young lady.

His gaze shifted then to Jane and the man who had been passing out drinks. By the time he noticed Bain heading their way it was too late. Conley’s fingernails dug into Sachin’s hand as he squeezed his husband’s hand. He did not have a good feeling about this. ’Don’t,” he whispered softly to Aurora just in case she was planning on doing something. He on the other hand, let go of Sachin’s hand and took a step forward. He needed to go stop Jane from doing anything stupid.

And thankfully Fletcher was closer and stepped in. Conley changed his direction and snatched up the first thing in front of him, which happened to be one of the shrimp canapeés Aurora had mentioned earlier. ”You’re right,” he said as if nothing had happened because he could do more good in the long term by not making a scene right now. ”These are quite good. Sachin you should try one…” If anyone was looking closely at Conley face, he looked like he was about to throw up.

It was a private matter, even if Adam was her BFF in the workplace. Taking a second closer look at Adam's glasses Laurel affirmed ignoring the Zita part. "I like the glasses. Will they aid your sight better than the other ones?" Hopefully or maybe they could be charmed to be better.

Turning to the lady by Adam's side Laurel smiled brightly in greeting after overhearing Airey's response. "It's nice to meet you Ms Wright!" Thinking she asked "Did i perhaps teach you Divination at Hogwarts?" Or did she mix her up with someone else?

'Airey repaired all the orbs.' Laurel speechlessly just stared at Airey for a moment totally baffled, not being able to respond to his cold response. Why was he so weird and changed? Laurel stole a glance over at Adam to see if he had taken note of what Airey had just said too and his off demenour. She was very well aware of who had done what in the Prophecy hall and Airey had repaired one or two orbs, but not all thousands of them. Keeping a straight face since Laurel had a feeling that protesting wouldn't be seen well upon she replied simply. "Whatever you say boss, of course you fixed all the orbs." Then the Minister went up on the stage and spoke about the Neo-Alliance and For the greater good and Laurel instinctively got a bad feeling about what this new era meant for the whole of the wizarding world and not just the ministry.

And then the man’s head was inclined towards another voice who had joined them, one of the Unspeakables from the department. One who was on the short list of potential liabilities who would need to be dealt with. “Gerulf. Good evening.

Then they were joined by yet another of Flamsteed’s former pupils and there was yet another moment of processing the words spoken to him before a response returned. “Live long and prosper, Miss Wright.” Verbal greeting only

When yet another joined the growing group, the man’s jaw clenched and the corner of his mouth twitched uncontrollably for a few counts...though this muscle spasm too soon was dealt with. “Airey Flamsteed repaired all the orbs,” he corrected her somewhat coldly. There was only one reason the orbs had been repaired at all that day and that reason was now in the hands of another at Hogwarts now. His throat felt dry and scratchy and deep down he wished to reach up and fiddle with the knot of his tie, but he couldn’t. He could only continue to stare ahead or cae cursory glances at those who had decided to speak with him. “I would not care for cider.” Words that came around as an after thought of sorts.

It was not words but the utterly absurd movement of another Unspeakable as they approached that drew the department head’s attention next. Two Unspeakables, for that matter. Though one he could forgive due to the phial in his pocket of her creation. He had not yet made an attempt to examine nor test it out, however, and was waiting for the opportune moment to do so. His icy forget-me-not-blues looked the offerings up and down, though made no effort to accept either. Those were not among his commands for the evening. “I can only assume you have had your share partaking in them,” he replied coolly. It would explain the erratic walking. “I believe Bain would like to take you up on the invitation. Your efforts would be best guided in that direction.

”Vell, ve kan be alone togezzer tonight zen,” he said with a smile that he didn’t really feel. He almost might be basically blind, but he could tell that Laurel didn’t want to talk about her husband or the kids and so he dropped the subject.

Would they help with his eyesight? Well, that was sort of a loaded question wasn’t it? ”Zey help wit glares but ze healers do nicht zink mein sight vill efer be like it vas before.” He didn’t elaborate on what he meant by before, since Laurel already knew about the exploding star that almost tried to eat him. In fact, Laurel knew things about him that nobody else did. Like he harbored a feeling that this place was going to be the death of him.

Airey didn’t want his cider? Well, Adam would take it. He reached out for it since he had offered his to the young lady whose name he still didn’t know but with whom everyone else seemed to be familiar. Since when did his boss call him Gerulf…nobody did that. No, the man’s behavior did not go unnoticed. He might not have been able to see the man’s particular physical quirks, but he certainly could hear the strangeness in his voice and the oddity of his comments. He reached out and put a hand on Laurel’s arm oddly just as the Minster started talking. He didn’t remove it.

At least not until the man was done talking. ”Laurel,” he offered up once the Minister was done talking.” Can you help me to ze buffet?” He wasn’t really hungry, but he hoped it would give them a moment along to discuss Airey. And perhaps what to do about it.

Oceanus gave a slight incline of his head in greeting. "Nice to meet you too, Oliver." Being new to the job, he was going to be meeting a lot of people. He had a strong feeling this was going to be much easier said than done. "Thank you, goodnight to you as well." Ocean had bid the man well, watching him for a moment until he had disappeared into the crowd.

With his full attention back on Stella, letting the speech sink in fully. His mind was still reeling from what he had heard and clearly from the looks and sounds of it, he wasn't the only one in the room. "You okay? What's on your mind?" Ocean whispered, tightening his arm around the girlfriends waist. The question itself was silly, he knew that but he'd rather have her talk to him than not voice her opinions at all.

Pardon him if he seemed a little, well not quite himself. The young man was still trying to fully process the happenings himself. He took a long drink from the glass he still had in his hand, this might just be the first of many tonight.

As far as Charles could tell, all the glasses were raised in the room and there was a resounding echo of ‘for the greater good’ and it brought tears to the man’s eyes. Proper tears. Though with one blink and a little trickle of a tear down his cheek...something shifted. For a brief moment it felt as though there were duelling visions, his eyes in competition with one another with overlapping but conflicting imagery. Taking a deep breath, the Minister descended from the small stage just as Victoria chastised and stripped away some of the veil that had covered his eyes.

Her concern felt lost on him despite the fear in her eyes resonating rather poignantly, cutting right into his chest and carving a hole there as she turned and walked away. “Victoria? Victoria I---” He took a stride towards her, his feet feeling considerably heavier and almost as though his cane would be unable to support his weight. But he was trying to follow her and would have continued his pursuit were it not for one of her former employees cam storming towards him - and Charles had only begun hearing him somewhere in the middle of his tirade. No...no they were mistaken. They just were not listening properly. These were all good things and he was just doing what was best for their people. His people. He was protecting them, all of them. They, he, just needed to understand.

And yet...the man’s mind was reeling and he felt a painful throbbing in both his temples, his complexion paleing.

Another voice joined in with Kendra’s brother and his insides twisted terribly as he felt the anguish in their voices. They just needed time...they all needed time...they would see, surely they would see, that the greater good was…

Charles wobbled in place and his hand gripped his cane more fervently as he attempted to stabilize himself as his body turned away from the chaos unfolding around him. He could hear Bain barking out orders for the Primeaux boy to be detained and the Minister’s own eyes fell on his head of Magical Law Enforcement escorting another employee from the Atrium. Kendra’s brother was somewhere in his periphery and he felt a duty to speak to the young man and offer kind words of reasoning, but he could find none. He felt as though he were wading through thick and murky water and suddenly the bank upon which he was treading had given out...and now he was drowning. The man stumbled a bit and caught himself on the end of a table with his other hand and, for the first time since Yukie’s passing, he felt as though he could not carry on. Little beads of perspiration forming on his brow, the Minister lifted his head and found his gaze falling on Kaiser...who seemed to be approaching with a real sense of urgency. He did manage to offer the young man somewhat of a knowing twitch of a smile and a flicker of a glance towards the nametag which...was entirely too far away to make out at the moment, but a certain affection was found on his face. An affection that turned strained, pained when he saw his grandson and Missa in the crowd.

His throat felt dry, terribly dry, and his head felt as though trolls were now using it for drumming practice.

Al-phon-sine,” he mouthed, a couple of breaths coming out as more of a wheeze, as a weary and wrinkly hand reached out into the air towards her. He managed to straighten his posture, a wide but strained smile spreading across his face as he found the balance to lift a hand to calm the crowd and other rising tempers. I implore everyone to please remain calm, he spoke kindly despite the less than kind happenings around him. Tonight is an evening of celebration of the freedom of wizardingkind and unity. Let us all not lose sight of that. So, please, I implore you...continue to enjoy your evening and I thank you for your continued cooperation.

*********************

Most of the surrounding conversation, pleasantries between former professor and former students or Unspeakable to Unspeakable were not affairs the man engaged with. There was no need for him to. Though his fingers did twitch and almost seemed to be reaching out towards someone...but not enough to draw any real attention seeing as his arms were still held firmly against his sides.

The Minister’s speech as well required no response...save for the cheers at the end to which Airey clasped his hands behind his back, puffed out his chest, and louded echoed ‘for the greater good’ along with the crowd.

Stoic and almost robotic, the department head hardly even flinched as the Unspeakable threatened him. Even under other circumstances, Airey Flamsteed was not one for most bubblies and would have declined regardless. Tonight was different...very different...and accepting drinks was not on the agenda. Whatever it was Nykto had left unsaid was not important, the line had already been drawn and Bain had been swift to move in. Something that made the astronomer’s left eye twitch severely for a few seconds...and then the same eerie stillness resumed.

To his former pupil, however, he simply inclined his head and nodded somewhat harshly. Yes, they all would soon see.

And somewhere deep inside Airey Flamsteed withered a little.

*********************

Smiling appreciatively as Kaiser fixed her nametag (so much better and less suffocating like this and she almost entirely forgot everything else that was causing her discomfort this evening), Candi carefully pinned it to her dress and brushed her curls aside to make sure that it was situated as it should be. It seemed somewhat pointless for her to have it on in the first place, however, since her hair thoroughly covered while she was standing still. “Looks like that gift bag of yours is the new dinner roll,” she teased with a playful poke to his shoulder. “Unless you want to shrink it to fit in my clutch.” She lifted up the little black clutch she had also made earlier in the day to go with her outfit.

Still not all out. Scraps and recycling of materials did not count as all out. She hadn’t even used a bust or any patterns!

...and by join you mean dancing, sim?

But it seemed she was destined to not know the answer to that (she knew what the answer would be anyway) as Kaiser’s attention was shifting once again to their name tags and this time she took a moment to examine them more properly as well. Without the horrible family name, her eyes more readily fell on the label of ‘muggleborn’ to her own and then the ‘pureblood’ on his. They had had numerous discussions about their past and where they came from, which had turned into a deeply philosophical conversation about the blank canvas of being born and if we all truly were born with a blank canvas or if there was paint already smeared on it and the art of life, but one thing had been clear about their upbringing: that neither of them truly knew where it was they came from. Which meant she was finally catching up to where she assumed his thoughts were spinning off to. How did they… she murmured, her voice trailing off as Kaiser laced his fingers with hers. Her eyes widening just a bit, Candi immediately glanced down at his pale fingers that were now draped over her tanner skin and it was impossible to not sense the protective quality to the touch. This...this was serious. Suddenly the knots were back in her stomach and her heart pounded painfully in her chest, threatening to leap out of it perhaps, as he started moving.

...Kaiser...what’s going on? Which was not an answer to his question at all (but for the record, no...she was not exactly okay and she would much rather leave now). It was even more unnerving that he seemed to know something as his behavior and tone were much more than his usual fight or flight instincts, which she usually had a decent read on. Kaiser right now felt unpredictable and as the Minister’s toast came to a close she found herself feeling a little nauseous, the hand squeeze both helping and not helping in the same breath. ...Kaiser…? What she was pleading for...she was not entirely sure, but she knew how fond he was of the Minister and the Minister left no doubt how fond he was of her best friend...so she understood his need to get close to him, personal assistant duties aside. Seeing the man being verbally attacked like this could not be easy to stomach.

Then there were flashes of light and the brunette was squeaking in frightful surprise while squeezing and tugging on his hand to instinctively pull him away from the on-going fray. This...this did not feel like diplomacy and she was reluctant to put to words what it felt like.

*********************

Three drinks and one dance. That was precisely three drinks and one dance too long. Maybe more like one drink and one dance too long considering they now had a glass apiece. Considering what had happened the last time he had consumed anything at this Ministry, Cox was not interested in giving them the opportunity to ruin his life again and it was for that reason that the champagne in his hand would be poured out into the fountain once they were close enough to it. “One...yours makes two and that leaves us with just one more.” She had not specified it had to be three drinks apiece and negotiations were closed on that front. “Someone I used to tutor and their roommate,” he shrugged nonchalantly while walking towards this new fountain to dispose of his drink. “I’d rather not.” There would be questions and small talk and he was already miserable being back here as it was. Enough torture.

...and speaking of…

He gave the Atrium another look over, his brow quirking at the tapestries in particular and then the scenes of protest taking place around the Minister (who was not coming across as any more competent than the last one Cox had any experience with). “...you done with your drink yet?

*********************

He did not want to be here. It was his final days before he needed to head back to Japan for his next semester of university and the last person he wanted to see was the man he formerly considered a grandfather. Perhaps Missa was hoping that tonight would smooth things over, but the moment they had stepped into the Atrium essentially assured that was not happening. What kind of dragon dung was this? Already feeling uncomfortable in his white suit and slicked back hair, Eiji stayed close to his girl friend and struggled to acknowledge anyone else (sorry, Nina. It wasn’t on purpose). Loosening his tie a bit with his free hand that had been previously shoved into his pocket, he had never felt more relieved to not bear the Hollingberry name than right now.

What...the bloody hell was wrong with this man? Eiji even found the tears insulting as the man got down from his stupid soapbox. “I don’t know anything about that man,” the former Slytherin spat under his breath. “They say politics and power can change you...guess it has taken its toll.

The man wasn’t even stopping the people being taken away or having spells cast at them? What...what kind of rubbish was this?!

So deep had he gone into his ruminating that he hadn’t even noticed anyone else approaching. Not a good look for an auror, he had to admit. But he didn’t let on that the woman had surprised him. ”Quite the statement, indeed,” he replied in an also neutral tone. ”Debuting tonight, in fact.” As was this new ministry.

No, Ronan absolutely would not be making sure he had kool-aid bubbly in his hand, thank you very much. He was pretty sure most people who knew him well enough knew his policy on drinking or eating anything that came straight from the ministry (anything that wasn’t that pre-packaged processed stuff, that is) and that was still in place tonight. Thankfully too, as he was not liking what he was hearing, though he hid it better than a lot of people. Namely, that Milo person and……Saul?! Really?! What if those rumors bouncing around the department about their head were true? Goldwasser pretty much had free reign to make a meal out of him and a whole department in which to hide the body. Not a smooth move. ”Excuse me, miss,” he said to the woman he’d been talking to (Kazane). He had some situations to defuse.

Ignoring the fact that his possibly vampiric boss was taking off the weird ‘doctor’ (he could stand to be scared some sense into), he approached Jordan with wand in hand, silently removed the spells Goldwasser had placed on him and hooked his arm through the other man’s, starting to lead him away, hissing a warning/plea as he did, ”Don’t say anything else. Just come along with me, before you get us both killed.” Dramatic? Possibly, but hopefully Milo would listen so that they could catch up to Ferguson and Saul before the former did anything stupid. Well, stupider than he already had. The latter too, for that matter.

Fools, the lot of them. As was the Minister, who seemed perfectly content to ignore the chaos his speech was causing.

Some toast.

Sure, the Gubraithian fire was a pretty impressive feat, that did not make her a fan of the message the new additions to the ministry were sending. And with the lack of communications from Hogwarts, she was worried even sans school-age children.

She spotted Victoria heading off after the speech and almost went after her, but then Milo started making a scene. Peggy sighed. This was not the place to make a scene. She thought her Gobstones Division Head would have more sense than that. It’s not like he was some fresh-from-Hogwarts new hire with something to prove. But at least the man had backup, she thought as she turned back.

Aegis. She had seen him earlier, best to continue her original plan of greeting those in her department. She made her way over, then nodded to the man and the three women with him, taking care to avoid the broken champagne glass on the floor. She paused to Accio the name tag from the floor and offer it to the man. Had it fallen?

“Evening, Aegis,” she said briskly, purposefully putting herself between the man and the minister. He looked so defensive, she felt like she needed to diffuse some tension. One of her employees making a scene at the gala was one thing, but two? At her first gala in charge? It would reflect badly on her. Anyway, she needed to distract from the topic of the toast and the champagne on the floor was an obvious target. “Need a refill?” She gestured at the mess on the floor. Her first attempt at a joke.
Aegis still stood defensively and ready to go at a moments notice if things went south real fast for them over here. His arm went down as soon as a lady walked in between him and the commotion. Breaking his line of sight from them, and from them to him Was she trying to keep him in line? After everything the Minister had just said? After he basically just announced they were going to abandon everything the Wizarding World stood for for thousands of years before now.

"Oh?" The Blonded-Bearded-Man said slightly surprised by her actions to calm him. "No, I'll be fine." He said looking at the glass on the floor then waving his wand to reform the shatter pieces back into it's champagne glass form. He picked it up off the ground. Then took his name tag back from her too. He did not put it back on. "Seems you know who I am." He pocketed it instead.

"You have me at a disadvantage." He said with a slight shrug mostly to loosen himself up out of his tense state and to be a bit less imposing to the lady before him. He gestured behind him. "This is my Wife, Arabella, her Sister-In-Law, Dylan, her her best friend, Louise." Aegis felt like a different man than just a few seconds ago. Lingering doubts about the night still were there. But if this woman came to keep him in check then fine. He'll stay in check.

SPOILER!!: Bain, and Scotty

Excellent the good Doctor wasn’t going to give him any trouble. It didn’t appear, however that his companion was going to be as agreeable. He was about to reply when Fletcher appeared. It was nice to see the man was good for something. ”If you will excuse us Ms. Howard.” That was all he was going to say on the matter. ”Fletcher,” he nodded at the man a small smile playing his lips. It was good to see his warning from last year had stuck.

He began frogmarching Dr. Nykto towards the exit.

But they hadn’t gone far when Jordan began speaking out. Still pulling the Doctor along, Bain made his way towards the Minster. Jordan’s rhetoric would not be tolerated in this new era. It was for the Greater Good that everyone here tonight understood this. He raised his wand. ”Immobulus.” And in case the man had thoughts about continuing to make a scene, Bain cast a silent Silencio the man's way as well.
Text Cut: Saul & Genevieve

With one hand still holding onto the dear doctor, his other busy detaining Jordan, Bain merely gave Primeaux a glare. He didn’t respond to his questions or accusations. Instead he yelled, FERGUSON!” The man had been lurking around all evening, if he really wanted to make himself useful, now would be the time. ”If you would please…take Mr. Primeaux to the holding cells.”

And don’t think you went unnoticed (aRogueOne) ”I wouldn’t Miss, unless you care to join Mr. Primeaux in the holding cells.”

Right right right.

Ferguson sounded familiar. Someone was yelling his name. HA. How funny. When his own surname was the exact same name -

....

HE WAS BEING YELLED AT?! TO DETAIN SOMEONE.

"YES SIR!" he splashed his glass of ~whatever everywhere as he WILDLY set his glass down, ready to spring into action, clearly. *BLINK BLINK* Primeaux...right. That bloke. "Incarcerous!" with a gentle flick of his wand he sent the unnecessary???? spell the man's way, hoping that it would help with the whole...not fighting the whoooooole way down to the holding cell. "I'll need your wand, Mr. Primeaux. If you...can manage it. Or I'll just take it myself." Scottie almost sounded cheerful, and he managed a sheepish grin in the man's direction. "I... wouldn't recommend fighting me on this. My bite's louder than my bark."

Who was suspect p-p-p-pooooor st-stuttering little Scottie to be hella good at magic? No one? He was Wes Ferguson's son. Ruff ruff. Grrrr.
Whoa hey now!? Saul definitely knew they'd retaliate but so quickly and so fiercely!? Bain's spells landed on Milo and the Games & Sports employee froze in place. pretty sure that silencing charm hit him too. Can't really dodge once you're stuck. "Is that really Necessa..."

...Ferguson? Who Did he mean, Scott? Where?! Had Scott not announced his location a second later after being called on, Saul would have not been prepared in time sliding his wand out from his wrist holster. "Protego Duo!" He felt some force behind the younger MLE colleague's spell's bindings even shoved him back a few inches. With his years and years of practicing and perfecting shield charms Saul managed to deflect it back at the flinchy young man.

The likely now former IUMO Chief Inspector took that free moment to look behind him and saw Milo was being apprehended by Ronan. How many traitors in the DMLE?! Saul tossed his wand to the ground and toward Ferguson who he didn't much care now if his spell had made contact or not. "Force isn't necessary." He finally finished. "I'll go quietly. Less fuss for the new regime." He kept himself still if they still wanted to lead him out similar to with Milo.

Ocean had bid the man well, watching him for a moment until he had disappeared into the crowd.

Letting everything sink in, Stella bit her lip wondering who these Neo Alliance people were, she had a bad feeling about this. Whoever they were, she didn't think they were good news from everything that's going on. Were they the ones who made all this nonsense blood status thing up? She didn't understand why did blood matter? Half the world was half or less, and some of the greatest witches and wizards were half blood or less. Blood didn't matter, it was who they were as a person that mattered.

Feeling his arm around her waist pulling her closer to him, she felt herself calm down at his touch. "These Neo Alliance people don't sound friendly Ocean, do you think they're who did all this?" She didn’t mean to grimace at the offer for coffee as it was something she’d happily do; it was more to the idea that they couldn’t speak freely at the moment. “A coffee sounds lovely. I don’t know about you but my paper work will still be there when I get back” or would it? Chances are the howlers from the parents may end up destroying her desk but well…that wouldn’t be a sad moment. “Just send me memo when you’re free. Something tells me you schedule as an auror is a little more busier than mine” before this whole situation anyway. Now she had parents wanting to speak to her day in day out.

Sighing a little, the blonde turned to grab another drink, which may not have been advisable as she hadn’t eat all day, but it did not matter as her eyes fell on some of the other party guests it seemed couldn’t keep their distaste under control. It was true that Delyth wasn’t familiar with the gentleman from Games and Sports (Milo) but she certainly agreed with what he was saying. But did he have to be so loud about it? So obviously against their current predicament? It was much better to work in the shadows. But it seemed he wasn’t the only one as another person stepped forward!

Was it time for her to step forward? Sure, shadows worked but…no. She shouldn’t shadows. Hesitantly, she took a step away from Genevieve towards the Milo from games and sports as if she were actually thinking of doing something.

"The paperwork will live on long past my retirement," Vivi murmured into the top of her cup, one of those polite things that means almost nothing. Just words to fill in the awkward space around them as they watched the world fall apart around them. What a nice gala, the better to watch the tyrants at play and her colleagues act as fodder. Max shouldn't have let her come alone tonight, because she was much more likely to get into trouble without his stabilizing influence.

When her boss barked at Delyth's subtle movement, Vivi reached out and grabbed hold of the other woman's wrist. "It's not worth it. Not the moment. There will be a moment, but this isn't it."

The events unfolding around them, had the young man shaking his head. Was this what working at the Ministry was going to be like? If so, he might seriously have to reconsider what he had just gotten himself into. Oceanus was going to keep all of his current thoughts and opinions to himself for the foreseeable future. What was going through his mind was very clearly on everyone else's from what he could see.

"That wouldn't at all surprise me," he muttered, taking another sip of his drink. A quick glance at the blonde beside him and he already knew that they might have to cut this night short. If everyone was already getting worked up and they had all the right to be!.. things could go downhill quickly. "It doesn't, Stell. You and I both know that but not everyone feels that way." There was always going to be things like this. It was sad but true.

"So, Mr. Fletcher," she said, turning her attention to her new companion and allowing him to guide her off at last, "what was it you wanted to know? And it's Howard, Jane Howard."
Fletcher was just as determined as Bain was but for completely opposite reasons. He would NOT allow Jane to get involved in Bain's mess, and in fact, actively ignored the old man he was leading away. Some people simply wouldn't allow themselves to be helped, huh.

Fortunately, Jane was not one of those people.

"Ah, Miss Howard." Fletcher was trying his best to turn on his charm, but he felt himself falling a bit flat. Maybe if Jessa were here and if he weren't being smothered by this scarf he'd be his brighter self. Or maybe if they weren't all wearing pins with their blood status on them... actually, he hadn't even put his on. Why bother? He came late to the party for a reason. He knew full well what was in the stupid gift bags.

Fletcher tore himself from his thoughts to glance briefly at the commotion going on up ahead with Scotty and the DMLE. His brown eyes landed on them for just a moment before returning to Jane. "Did I miss the Minister's speech? I was just curious... about what he had said?"

He was careful to keep his tone light, though that same lightness did not extend to his tired expression. Come on, Jane, his dark eyes seemed to say again. Keep playing along.

Alphonsine's eyes finally found Bain soon after Jordan's public outcry. And just in time too, as Saul Primeaux made the poor choice in joining in to speak out. This would never do. She would not have this magnificent gala ruined by the several outspoken who did not have the foresight to see how beneficial this new era would be to their entire community.

But she was pleased to see that the MLE department head was swiftly taking care of the situation and she turned towards the Minister just as he was calling for her. She quickly rushed over to him and reached for his arm in an attempt to steady him while he tried to reassure the party-goers.

"They will understand, Charles," she spoke softly near his ear and in soothing tones. "But perhaps we should sit down and catch our breath. So much excitement for one night." Maybe they could even partake in a nice cup of tea. All the excitement was clearly taking a toll on the older man and she would see to it that he remained the figurehead he needed to be.

And just as she began to lead the Minister away from the party, she caught sight of Ronan Carter approaching Jordan. She did not dwell too long on what he thought he was doing because she knew Bain could easily take care of any traitors.

With her back to the commotion, Peggy was blissfully unaware of people being ushered away and the spells being traded among the DMLE personnel. Not her department, not her problem. Her problem was Aegis here, who thankfully was calming down very quickly. And...didn't know who she was. Oops. Peggy had made flash cards of all her employees, so she could learn their faces more effectively, but...well, obviously Aegis hadn't done the same. And frankly, could not be expected to. She smiled again, an actual genuine smile this time. "Oh! My apologies," she said, gesturing to her own name tag. "Peggy Laplace, I'm your new Games and Sports department head." Hopefully there would be no judgment for the fact that it also said Pureblood.

She nodded politely to each of the women as he introduced them. "A pleasure," she said, still smiling, a little awkwardly now. Certainly, meeting them was a pleasure, but having to diffuse the tension of the situation was not. That speech really had everyone riled up. She resisted the urge to glance over her shoulder at the minister as he spoke again. She let a tiny sigh escape. This department head job was not going to be easy.

Jane had been distracted by noting the events going on around them--people being led away, spells being fired off, even. In her opinion, this was not much of a party. She was very concerned, too--though she didn't show it openly--about Dr. Nykto. Where were they taking him, and what did they intend to do with him? Granted, he had been behaving a bit badly, and she very much hoped a reprimand of some sort would be the worst thing to happen to him. She had been thinking of trying to recruit his efforts, but if he couldn't control himself better than that, perhaps that would not be advisable.

Turning back to Fletcher, she nudged him in the direction of the food tables, to get further from the crowd that had formed around the scene of the disruptions (and also because she realized she hadn't had a chance to eat anything yet). "Ah, the speech," she began conversing with him, "yes, I'm afraid you did miss it. It was the usual sort of first of the year thing, encouraging us in our work, some remarks on the new ... improvements, to the Atrium, as you can see," and her she gestured around them with her arm. "And finishing with a toast to a new era of freedom to be ourselves as wizards and witches....and our support of the Neo-Alliance," she finally finished in a lower tone of voice. And as they were nearing one of the tables, she reached out and snagged the first piece of food she came to--she was going to need to keep up her strength this year.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Ah, Sachin would have loved it if Aurora had mentioned her observation out loud. Yes, he certainly was more relaxed than Conley. They balanced each other out in that way. He was intrigued to hear that the lady was up for the challenge. “Just don’t go overworking yourself too much,’’ came his bit of advice. “Speaking from experience…’’ Here, he threw his husband a teasing glance. “Anyone who cares about you will worry.’’ Naturally, the Ambassador wasn’t about to pass up any time to speak of his beloved India. “It is! You definitely should make the visit there sometime. It makes for a nice vacation spot.’’ Documents to translate? Sachin was all in. “Not a problem. I’d be happy to take a look. When would you like me to come by?” The younger man’s gaze followed Conley’s to Bain. Yes, Sachin had stayed away from the man as Conley asked. Not that he needed telling twice. There was something about Bain that unsettled him.

There was a lot happening. Sachin, of course, hadn’t had any bubbly in his glass. Not that that was his focus. The Minister's speech was. And then there was an outburst from an employee whom he believed worked in Level seven. All Sachin could do was watch in shock, and slight fear, for the man, who of course had a point about the particular phrase being thrown around. Okay, now he was starting to feel uncomfortable and uneasy. But he wasn’t uneasy for himself. The feeling was for Conley and for their daughter. Suddenly, he understood why Conley was being overprotective of him.

Brody reached for another sandwich as he mulled over Mariana’s response. “Things certainly have changed since the last time I’ve been here. I interned a few summers ago.’’ Then he smiled in apology. “Sorry. I don’t think I remember you from back then. Practically everyone I’ve encountered so far is unfamiliar.” His attention was drawn to a particularly loud woman {Sian} and he found her entertaining to watch. “The new… statue is interesting. That’s perhaps the biggest change. Physically, at least.” Oh, plant talk? Brody was not a botanist himself though he was fascinated, and possibly obsessed, with fireworks. “Mini topiary trees are certainly nice to look at, Joseph.’’ He didn’t find it strange the topic had veered off in a totally unexpected direction. Nope, Brody went with the flow. Observing a frown and a shake of the head from Gabriel, he asked, “Alright there?”

And then came the speech. The new employee couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow. He did not like it one bit, the sound of what the Minister was indicating and only half heartedly raised his glass.

If Milo hadn't been so angry after a year of built-up frustrations and injustices, he'd have probably felt pretty badly about how he spoke to the Minister. He knew him to be a nice man, or at least he thought he was. After the WWN broadcasts and keeping parents from their children, he wasn't so sure anymore. And this whole setup tonight, along with the speech he'd just given, really was the icing on the cake.

He caught Saul Primeaux in his peripheral vision as he spoke up as well. Good, it was nice to know that there were others just as outraged and willing to take a stand as he was. He was starting to worry that the Ministry was full of a bunch of cowards or blood purists now feeling emboldened. He heard the shouts behind him and had just opened his mouth to say something else when he realized he could no longer move and no longer speak. He was seriously being silenced for speaking out against the Minister and the Ministry? He thought this was a free country, for Merlin's sake!

But just as quickly as he'd been immobilized, the spells were lifted and someone from MLE was attempting to escort him away. "Get your hands off me," he demanded, pulling his arm from the other man's grasp. "I'm not going anywhere with you." From where he stood, it seemed as if Carter was trying to detain him. And since he hadn't seen where the spells were coming from, it could have very well been him who had cast upon him to shut him up before escorting him to the holding cells.

"I said what I needed to say and I'm simply looking for answers." The urgency and maybe a little anger was in his voice, but he was simply talking, not throwing spells or hands. "That is not a crime." Neither should Primeaux be punished for agreeing with him. What was happening here?! And look, the Minister was leaving. How convenient.

...Ferguson?

He was so focused on Saul that he hadn't yet noticed Ronan and that Milo fellow. Instead, he glowered at Saul's successful attempt to protect himself from his spells. How irritating. Go quietly, Saul. Please. No need to cause a scene here and now. He slide out of the way of the deflected spells and gritted his teeth.

He did, however, summon the wand to him before holding his own up to Saul's nose as he stepped closer. "Good man, sir. I thank you for that. I'd hate for things to get messy...in front of all these people," he kept his voice low. "You should know the way to the holding cells. Go first." He gestured with Saul's wand toward the gala's exit. "And...while we're at it, I'd like you to hand over any second or third wands you've got on your person." He raised an eyebrow. Part of the MLE himself, he wasn't stupid even if young and naïve.

It was only now that he saw his superior, Ronan, getting at Milo. So Ronan was on Bain's side........that was......interesting. The thought hadn't crossed his mind that Ronan could be saving his own skin. He assumed the worst of people lately.

Oh so she was his new Department Head? "It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance then Ms. Leplace" He took her hand into his and gave it a gentle shake. The old Aegis would have held it out and gave the back of her hand a kiss, same as what his Uncle would have done. But New Aegis with a Wife and Kids so he was loyal to the Lady behind him.

His free hand took a tighter grip on his wand watching the commotion behind Peggy. He wanted to take action same as Milo. Jealous that his colleague hogged the glory. But once again his want to protect kept him in his place and his New Department Head whether she knew what she had done or not. Calmed his nerves. "Should I be expecting many changes to our department as well?" He spoke politely, but in all fairness witnessing the other man speak up about his division's sudden change in policies....(Wasn't that Arabella's boss?! He turned around quickly wondering just how she was reacting) Aegis was curious to see what this new Ministry meant for the Games and Sports Department.

Saul scowled right back as Ferguson got all up into his face. The wand basically poking into his nose really started to anger him and regret that he surrendered so easily. "Right, so glad you didn't have to clean up a Mess you caused." His protest was no different from Milo's he wanted straight answers. Why were they allowing a bunch of Grindlewald Enthusiasts to so easily take over the Ministry?! How did this happen so silently under their noses. There was some shame the DMLE (himself included) should be feeling for letting it come to this.

The IUMO Chief Inspector begun to move in the direction of the exit just instructed by his younger rather strange mannerism-ed pier. Then stopped once more as he was told he should also hand over any spare wands he carried on him as well. Dammit. Dammit. This Lapdog of Bain's was rather smart. Saul reached into the inner-lining of his jacket and pulled out what looked to be an older looking wand. It was his Father's, and he felt that shame wash over him again. His father would be rolling in his grave knowing how easily Saul was giving up here. He turned and held out this wand as well but that anger was showing clear in his eyes right at Ferguson. "Don't lose it. If you lose it..." You know what, he was done talking. He placed the wand into the Pup's hand and made for the exit as instructed as before toward the Holding Cells.

Scottie caused? He thought he hadn't caused anything at all. But he wasn't about to argue with Saul. His colleague seemed angry. Rightly so, too, but Scottie kept his face blank. He would agree with his sentiment that yes, this all had happened under their noses. And Scottie felt that same shame for it.

But now was not the time to dwell on the past. He had a job to do.

"It'll be safe with me." He said as he took the second wand. "Both of them will be. Now let's go going, Mr. Primeaux," he started following behind the man, his wand almost touching his back. Where was Goldy? Had he led that...Doctor person away? He tried not to catch anyone's eye as they left.

Despite the obvious atmosphere, despite the fact that he was often highly attuned to any changes in Candela's usual disposition (too attuned, actually, to the point of reading into the most innocuous things), and despite the fact that he was supposed to be keeping his head down, Kaiser suddenly found himself caught up in a moment of complete tunnel vision, of needing to reach the Minister.

When he managed to catch Mr Hollingberry's eye, Kaiser's heart gave a sudden leap with a vague sort of hope. It instantly crashed and burned, however; the Minister was not in a good way, Kaiser could tell that even from here, and it almost hurt to look at him. He caught the smile, the glance, the expression, but didn't automatically register any of its meaning, likely wouldn't until he had the opportunity to pick apart the event later that evening, detail by excruciating detail.

Kaiser suddenly stopped in his tracks, still clutching Candela's hand, as Alphonsine Rosier appeared by Mr Hollingberry's side. Suddenly, he dared not take another step - her having merely re-entered his field of view was enough to remind him of the potential danger all around. And what did Kaiser do in times such as these? What did he always, always do, whenever the going got tough? Automatically, instinctively, he let self-interest take over, saved himself at the expense of others. It was Alphonsine that the Minister had asked for anyway, Kaiser was sure of it, and it was Alphonsine who had reached his side first. Already she was leading him away, and Kaiser didn't try to stop her, and maybe it was not only self-preservation that stopped him, but hurt as well - in spite of what he suspected, in spite of what he was almost sure of.

All of the urgency went out of him, all of the determination to keep moving forward. Kaiser tore his eyes away from the Minister at last, and took stock of everything happening in the immediate vicinity, namely the men being led away, and another who seemed to be getting increasingly upset... and Candela. It only registered, only just now, that she'd been pulling on his hand even as he'd been pulling on hers, that she was frightened.

The reality of the situation suddenly came crashing down on him at the same time that something inside him crumbled, and Kaiser just... wilted. He looked blankly at Candi for a moment, blinked hard, and then again. What had he dragged her into? Literally, and figuratively. "I'm so sorry, Candela," he murmured, wanting to pull her in close and hold her tight, in the same instant that he felt the urge to snatch his hand away, demand that she, nor anybody, never touch him again. The compromise was to do nothing, to not let go. "I'm not feeling... ah... is it okay with you if we leave?" Kaiser was sure he could sense such a need from Candi now, but couldn't be sure if he was simply projecting. Regardless, it was definitely time to go.

He should have set a tongue locking curse on the old man he was currently holding, but as he was a little preoccupied with Jordan, and while the good doctor’s comments did strike a cord with the MLE Head and made him want to bite the man's head off, he chose not to reply. Dr. Nykto would get what was coming to him soon enough.

There seemed to be a small insurrection going on in his department. How interesting. He would have to deal with that directly. Perhaps it would be Zabini’s first task as head of the Genealogical Investigations Team. At least Ferguson seemed to be doing his job by handling Primeaux. Perhaps the man would be useful after all.

And while he might have appreciated Carter’s assistance under different circumstances, this was not one. No, especially when someone had clearly undermined him by lifting the spells he had cast. The rabble needed to be shown that defiance would not be tolerated. Mutineers would be punished. It was for the Greater Good that people fell in line.

So before anyone else could try to play the hero (and before the good Doctor could make anymore comments), Bain reached into his pocket and produced a handful of Peruvian Instant Darkness Powder. Which he tossed into the air.

A complete and utter blackness so dark no light charms could penetrate it filled the Atrium.

It lasted only a few minutes and when it faded, Goldwasser, Dr. Nykto, and Jordan were no-where to be found.

"There are my bosses!" Calyx said to Nina, waving at Ms Bowman in response to her smile and indicating Ms Emmons-Clarke as well when Bertie joined her. They were both nice very nice ladies and of course plant people, which was even better!

Oh a toast! They had come just in time then. Calyx grabbed a couple of champagne glasses from a passing waiter with an appreciative smile, and handed one to Nina. He listened obligingly to the Minister's speech then leaned in to whisper to Nina, utterly clueless, "What is the Neo Alliance? What are they allied against?"

"Mhm... Neat," Nina agreed uncomfortably through a forced smile. She, of course, found nothing about it to be neat. In her time at Hogwarts, Nina excelled in History of Magic and she had the NEWT scores to prove it. So the words inscribed at the fountain's base made her skin crawl. But she also knew better than to explain its significance to Calyx here and now, so instead, she wore a rehearsed smile, pleased that Calyx seemed to be distracted by the other guests.

Ever-so-politely, Nina waved to the two women (Olly and Bertie), though her wave was far less enthusiastic when compared to her fiancé's. It was his enthusiasm that kept her from spiraling entirely. Maybe she was just overthinking it. Everything was fine. As long as she had Calyx by her side, she would be safe.

Even with this in mind, however, Nina looked around the atrium again, hoping to gauge whether or not others felt the same way she did. Briefly, she noticed Missa and Eiji (the latter of whom looked to be quite unhappy). She was just about to suggest to Calyx that they go say hello because Nina needed Eiji to confirm her worries, when she heard the loud ting ting and the beginnings of a toast. Still uncomfortable, Nina inched even closer to Calyx (if there were even any remaining space between them at this point).

"Thank you," she whispered, taking the glass he offered. Aside from this, however, she stood very still and listened carefully, dissecting each and every word spoken by the Minister.

Our contributions to the Neo Alliance with which we stand. New era. Greater good.

...........

"Calyx they-" but what they were, she did not have the chance to say, for just then an employee began loudly protesting, only to be joined by another. This, in it of itself, was enough to frighten Nina, who had no Gryffindor bone in her entire body, but when the lights shut off, she SHRIEKED.

And when the darkness finally lifted, Nina was clinging onto her fiancé's arm. "Calyx, we need to go." Hi. Nina was scared. She didn't feel safe here. Could they please leave? Before anyone else started aiming spells at one another? Before terrible things happened? She couldn't run in heels!!!

SPOILER!!: Jake

Except who even knew if that was the vibe he got across; he couldn't see his face to check, and was not about to go hunting down a shiny spoon just to make sure.

Tomasz' immediate reaction, the shrinking and head-ducking, did not go unnoticed, and Jake felt a pang of guilt without entirely knowing why. He had a look at the name tag, and thought at first that maybe Tomasz didn't want to wear it in such an environment because it proclaimed him a muggle-born, but... "Right..." That was strange. (Was it? Maybe.) "I don't know, but maybe some records got mixed up. I can have a word with Goldwasser and... see." Or, also, maybe not. Or maybe just without mentioning the lad specifically. "Put it on though, Tomasz, just for now, and we'll try to get it sorted. You might end up drawing more attention to yourself without one." And that, for some reason, seemed like a very bad idea.

The fountain though. Jake had been planning to pretend that he hadn't seen exactly what was engraved at the base of it - painful for someone who had always been good at noticing even the smallest details. That plan soon went out the window, however, when the phrase was spoken aloud.

"It's impressive," Jake said to Kevin - whether or not he was the intended recipient of that question - as he looked up at the towering monument. He wasn't lying, it just worked out that the statement was sort of diplomatic too; the fountain was objectively grand and imposing and it left an impression. And the fire was pretty cool. Uh. Striking. Was he too old to call things cool now? He'd have to get Jonah and Jackson's input on that one. "I mean, it's definitely a statement." A really horrible, unfortunate statement. Something he needed to convey to Tomasz, though not in so many words. "It's a slogan, used by the Alliance, years and years back. The symbol too. I can catch you up on it later, if you-"

The ting-ing interrupted him then, and Jake stopped mid-sentence to look around for its source. Ah, the Minister, looking... uh. Old. Maybe? Jake didn't see a lot of Minister Hollingberry in his day-to-day life, so it was hard to make that call. He passed on picking up a glass, and instead paid attention to the speech and...

... oh.

And...

... oh no.

It was not exactly chaos, but things were... happening. That old bloke being escorted away. Protests being voiced. Jake's initial impulse was to join in, demand to know what the deal was, having been separated from three of his own kids even if it had initially been almost a relief but the urge was soon tempered. With the way things were looking, the (increasingly more insistent) sensible side of Jake told him it would not benefit anyone to make waves until more of the situation became clear.

For the moment, he glanced discreetly over at Tomasz, to make sure he wore the name tag.

Though still feeling uncomfortable, Tomasz did feel calmer with Jake's presence. The older auror was good company. Better than Kevin, who made Tomasz feel increasingly uneasy. "Yyy...," he nodded, though he was not sure if he believed the explanation. Tomasz did not understand why the badges had blood status. It was not something that made sense to him, but he was not sure that Jake would know the answer. He bowed his head though, grateful for Jake's offer to speak to Goldwasser. It made him uncomfortable to ask, but Tomasz did want to know. Maybe he would ask himself. He had not yet decided, but he nodded anyway.

As Jake commented on the fountain, Tomasz moved to pin the nametag to his person. Wearing it made him more uneasy than holding it. He had an urge to take it off. He did not do this, but he did think about it for a moment before looking back up to Jake. Alliance? Tomasz did not understand. He tilted his head to convey that-

What he meant to convey, however, went on pause for the speech and the series of events that followed it. Tomasz instinctively reached for his wand, looking around the room with concern. "I do not understand." He admitted honestly, uncertain of whether or not he was meant to do anything. And when darkness took over, his confusion grew tenfold. "What was that?" he asked, looking around the atrium with worry. Only then did he notice that Mr. Goldwasser was no longer present.

Had Ronan really expected Jordan to corporate? No, no he hadn’t. But the man had a point. ”Which is why I removed the spells my boss placed on you,” he hissed back. And there went Ferguson with Saul, ruining his admittedly half-baked idea. In his defense, he was working on the fly here. So, half-baked schemes were all he had. So, sue him. ”There is a time and a place for such questions, this is not the place and now…”

But before he could finish his anger-tinged response, the room suddenly went dark. Peruvian Instant Darkness Powder, had to have been, judging by the way none of his light spells were working. Which only served to cause the Auror to start cursing loudly in a language he hadn’t slipped into in months years: French. Hey, it was his go-to when his emotions were up.

When the smoke powder cleared, his boss, that ridiculous doctor and Jordan were gone. Invoking another round of French from one Ronan Carter. Apologies to anyone who understood him.

In her younger years, especially her fresh out of Hogwarts years, Penelope would have joined Milo Jordan and Saul Primeaux without a second thought. And a part of her definitely still wanted to. But there were also several years between then and now, and fortunately, those years as an Auror had restrained the reckless part of her nature. It was still there, but she held herself back right now, taking to observing instead of acting for the next few minutes.

Observing the way Goldwasser conducted himself. The way Ferguson readily jumped in to arrest Primeaux. The way Carter seemingly did as well. The way Jordan understandably resisted.

Then darkness.

Her wand had already been in her hand, so she instantly cast a silent Protego around herself, just in case. Peruvian Instant Darkness Powder was a pain to deal with, with the way it allowed no light to be seen at all, so she remained alert, listening for any signs of attack or foul play. There was a shriek, but no sounds of fighting... And as the darkness slowly dissipated, it appeared that everything was the same as before.

Except that Goldwasser, Nykto, and Jordan had vanished.

There was a lot to unpack here. What had the MLE become? Who could be trusted? Perhaps Carter was safe, since he was still over there and swearing in French. Understandable. She had a few words for all this herself.

But perhaps it was too soon to classify anyone as safe yet. She had far more questions than answers right now.

And so her attention finally returned to Flamsteed. He had mentioned this so-called new era even before Minister Hollingberry's speech, so he clearly knew things. How much he would reveal...well, maybe it was worth trying. "What do you know about this Neo Alliance?"

Constant Vigilance! O_O AWAKE!

Gabriel dropped his glass as the atrium plunged into darkness. His wand was out before he even thought about it. Peruvian instant darkness powder was not something somebody used for any good reason. Yes, the man knew what it was immediately. He was born in Peru, remember. One didn’t spend 80% of his life in South America without being able to recognize the stuff, and develop a healthy suspicion of those who used it.

But then the darkness cleared, and Gabriel looked around at Joseph, Brody, and Mariana. “Is anybody hurt?” he asked the little group by the buffet table, keeping his wand at the ready.

Then he checked for Mister Goldwasser, his department head, or Mister Upstead, the head auror. Surely they’d tell him what to do?! But Goldwasser was nowhere to be seen. That was worrying. Who would protect everyone from whomever had used the darkness powder? Gabriel felt immensely unqualified to be in law enforcement at this moment. And immensely grateful his sister had declined to be his guest tonight. At least he didn’t have to worry about her getting in the way or reminding their mother how dangerous his job really could be when she went home. He didn’t know most of the aurors or security folks by sight, given he was mostly offsite for training rather than in the office, but still he looked for anyone he recognized. What did they need him to do?

********

Peggy shook her head as Aegis referred to her as “Ms. Laplace”. Really, it was far too formal for her liking. She was not that old, despite having two adult children. She was ready to reassure the man that there would be no sweeping changes in their department -- blood status had no place in sports, after all -- when suddenly she could see...absolutely nothing.

Might be for the best, she thought as she drew her wand, though she did not intend to actually cast without being able to see. Best not to make promises she wasn’t sure she could keep.

She did finally turn around when the darkness cleared, and noted Milo had left. As had Goldwasser and some of the rest of those previously gathered in that area, and someone was cursing in French as well. And based on the choice words she heard, nothing good had happened. “I think...we should probably clear out the area,” Peggy said nervously, looking for any of the other department heads who might have been closer to the action. What was even going on? This gala was quite the disaster, even worse than she’d anticipated, given the renovations and party favours. She lowered her wand, now that she could see, and there was no obvious immediate threat.

Default Still with Fletcher, mention of Conley and Sachin

Jane had only had time to pop one puffed something-or-other into her mouth when suddenly everything went totally black. What was going on? The only thing Jane could think of that would create such an intense lack of light so quickly over a large area was Peruvian Darkness Powder (a favorite prank of schoolchildren). But these were not children and Jane was uneasy about what the darkness had been created to hide.

Fletcher, who still had her arm, had still not responded to her comment, but Jane stopped in her tracks, hoping he would stop with her. She didn't feel it advisable to stumble around in the dark, not knowing who--or what--they might stumble into. Pity, too, because she had been hoping to say a word to Conley and Sachin before the event was over. Did all Ministry events end so suddenly, and unpleasantly?
