Default Mid Level Corridors

*click for live version*

Ah, the smell of teen perspiration, wet dog and...is that a hint of pine? Long and wide, the mid level corridors are not as complicated as their lower level comrades but they certainly carry a unique odor. You can always tell which employees work here for they hardly seem to notice. On occasion you may find a nervous teenager standing in the hall wringing their fingers as they await to be called in for their apparition licensing examination. Also, it may be a good idea to keep a close eye on your ankles as some pests (be it creatures or plants) get a little irate when brought indoors or in close proximity to people and may just slip out of their confinements for a bit of a stroll.

The only corridors that seem immune to the various stenches are those in the immediate proximity to the Department of Magical International Cooperation, instead boasting refreshing smell of absolutely nothing. Cannot have our international visitors being greeted by the smell of dung in its various forms now.

Sniff sniff.

Was it just him or had the smells gotten worse? Probably him. It had been a couple of weeks or so since he’d specifically come this way himself so maybe his nose was playing tricks on him in his absence. It certainly marked the corridors as where they were…right smack in the middle of either creatures or environment, the former where he was currently as he walked his rounds. Mother nature and animals, each with wild scents of their own in a cacophony when coming to meet.

Good thing he wasn’t allergic.

Casting a spell against one wall for a random check of the charms there, Simon was relieved that the results came back positively. They didn’t need any more escaping creatures to contend with. Nothing seemed to be out of place in the various nooks and crannies as well.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Sachin was tired and frustrated. He’d spent the last few days in India but they were nowhere close to catching whomever was or were stealing those phoenixes. And so far, the Brits hadn’t been much help but he was hopeful that that fact would change. He was here at the Ministry on official business - to give an update, and receive one - plus since he was here, he did get to see the husband whom he missed very, very much. As the Muggle saying went: killing two birds with one stone. Only in this instance, it was three.

The Ambassador made a face as that familiar mixture of odor hit him as he chose to walk along the corridors of the other mid level departments before eventually coming to DIMC. You know… he was hoping to walk out some of his frustration. Right hand in his pants pocket, he used his left to rumple his hair, leaving it in a mess.

All he could think about were the phoenixes.

Eureka emerged from her office, and into the corridors walking briskly with a folder in her hand. It was obvious she was focused on something, and maybe MAYBE muttering some Latin names under her breath. Going back to DERP was one of her best decisions in the past few years, she quickly blended in with the group. Most of them were new faces from five years ago, but at least she got Kat in there. Another reason why she was happy was the research she had the opportunity to look at with all the resources the department offered. It was just amazing. Her friends probably got tired of hearing about it.

Today, she was reviewing one of the papers but the premise in there didn't make sense to her so she was pacing all over the place, trying to regain her focus after five hours of reading. That was why she was here with a folder, some of her hair was starting to get static-standing and she probably looked like a very confused person right now.

"Sachin!" She saw the man there and immediately walked up to him hugging the folder to her chest and smiling. "Hello. Wow, I haven't seen you in a while." Wait, was he... he seemed upset? Mad? Frustrated probably. "Are you okay?"

With the two distracting elements -the odor and the entire Phoenix situation-, Sachin was too busy to nice anyone else there. Least of all, someone with their hair somewhat frizzy. But as the fates would have it, he glanced at the person then did a double-take. Said person had a face he knew. It seemed she recognised him at the same moment too.

Sachin’s face lit up in a smile, all thoughts of phoenixes and disgusting odors vanishing. “Namaste, Eureka.’’ Oh, she had noticed? The man made an attempt to make light of the situation. “Just the occasional situations of black market sales. Not to mention the horrible smell along a few of the corridors.’’ He eyed her hair curiously. “Experimenting?’’ he asked. “Your hair looks messy, no offence.”

Namaste, Eureka bowed her head at him. He definitely was stressed out, look at his delayed recognition of her and all. "Oooh, that sounds heavy." Black market sales. She appreciated she didn't have to deal with such heavy subjects and regulations. Imagine being someone responsible to build a whole security system for endangered species. That was tough. "I agree on the corridors smelling foul," she smiled a little though. "I am quite used to weird smells. Some of the plants I work with are hybrids in-vitro, so the smells are usually anything but natural." The good news was she wasn't going to invite him over to her lab work any time soon.

Oh, oops. She laughed nervously, patting down her hair but not making it better. "Oh, yeah. Not really. I'm just reviewing some research already ongoing or shelved in the department. It's all new to me still, I need more time to wrap my head around it. Where were you going?" Or doing...

Indeed it was heavy. But it was not the first time he had dealt with smuggling and it definitely would not be the last. All in a day’s work of being an Ambassador. But Sachin was not going to let his issues come in between him and Eureka having a conversation. As usual, he was quite intrigued about her work. “What’s the weirdest smells you’ve ever come across?’’ And as always, he was curious about her present assignments. “Working on anything exciting?”

Sachin grinned. “So catching up then? How’s that going?’’ The man knew that Eureka was still fairly new and that sometimes taking in everything about a job could be stressful. Maybe that had been why her hair had been a mess. “On my way to see Conley to give him an update on the Phoenix situation.” Sachin lowered his voice. “It’s the perfect excuse to see him too.’' But really, he and Conley kept things professional while at the Ministry.

One of the many things that sucked about having your eyesight ruined by an imploding star was how easy it was to get lost. Another? Mismatched socks. Worst? The horrible coke-bottle glasses he now wore that made him look incredibly hot dorky and did very little to actually help him see. All three were plaguing Adam this afternoon, along with an itchy scalp, but that wasn’t the imploding star’s fault. No, he was quite certain the itchy scalp was courtesy of the new shampoo his girlfriend had insisted he try.

He had been trying to find Level 5 again. He had encountered difficulties of a different nature that last time he had attempted to go home for a visit and he had a feeling it was something with his VISA paperwork. He had attempted to update it a month ago, but the lady who had helped in DIMC had seemed a little off…why? He hadn’t been able to place why, but she sure had talked about him smelling funny.

And speaking of smelling funny – why yes, Adam did actually smell funny today. Perhaps to you it smelt like burnt toasted marshmallows? Or a sugary-Carmel flavor? To Adam, he smelt normal. It was hard to sniff yourself after all. He scratched at his hair line as he tried to read the sign in front of him. While the itch was from the shampoo, the smell was from the mild love potion that was dotting his shirt. He’d cleaned up most of it, but some still lingered.

And the sign? Yeah, that he couldn’t make out. Stupid glasses/eyes.

Refreshed from her afternoon coffee and chitchat at the DERP cafe, Grae felt like she could take on the world. So what that she had to help rush a young wizard to St. Mungo's after a dreadful splinching incident during his apparition exam earlier today? So what that she had to apparate all the way to Mojave Desert to pick up a student who took the exam question "How would you go about apparating to someplace warm?" a bit too literally. So what that she would probably be at the office until midnight tonight, sifting through the piles of exam results? (After all, summer was the busiest time of year for apparition licensing.) None of it mattered, because she was caffeinated and socialized - her favorite combination.

Her heels click-clacked on the floor as she made her way through the corridor, rifling through a folder of upcoming exam appointments. But the witch stopped in front of Level 5 at the sight of a man wearing a pair of very....well, interesting glasses. The spectacles didn't seem to be doing the man much of a service, as he was still squinting at the DIMC sign. "Can I help you find something?" Perhaps he was lost. Maybe he was a late bloomer waiting to take his apparition test? Grae did recall seeing a non-teenager on the schedule for today.

The man's identity didn't click until he reached up to scratch his hair. "Adam?!" Grae exclaimed as she finally recognized the unspeakable. "I'm so sorry, I didn't recognize you with your new glasses! What are you doing all the way up here?" It seemed rare whenever DoM employees made their way to the middle or upper levels. Grae imagined they were just holed up in their secret chambers all day. She tucked her folder under her arm, wrinkling her nose at an unusual smell. The hallways always had a distinct odor, but was that....baked goods she detected?

He heard the click-clack of heels and wondered if he should try and stop the person and ask for help. Sigh. He really was tired of being dependent on the kindness of strangers, but sadly that was his life. He also thought he smelt coffee. Maybe the person walking was carrying a cup? No…the smell didn’t get much stronger as the person approached. Still, maybe he’d just let the person go by and try to make his way to DIMC by himself. Or, maybe he’d just slink back to level nine (aka get lost somewhere else).

Bah! Too late. Someone was asking if he needed help. Well, at least that saved him the awkwardness of having to ask for help. But still…. Magnus’s pointy hat he missed being independent. ”Vell,” he started to say as she scratched vigorously at his hairline.

Both hands went up at the sound of his name. ”Ja?” He conceded slowly. He didn’t know why admitted his name made him feel as if he was afraid he was going to get yelled at for something he didn’t do, but he certainly felt like a little kid who had gotten caught trying to steal a cookie. And while the voice sounded familiar, he wasn’t 100% sure who was talking to him. Gale, or Grail or something like that if he remembered. He was pretty sure they met at an Orientation event sometime. He’d been in the Ministry so long he didn’t remember everyone’s name, although he was pretty sure she worked in Transportation. He apparently really needed to get out of the Love Chamber more often. At the mention of his glasses, he sheepishly adjusted them with his right hand. He might have, also, you know might be looking a bit too far to the left while he talked with Grae. ” I zink somezzing vas filled out vrong on mein FISA.” He said simply. ”I vas trying to find International Kooperation.” Quick. He thought. Ask her something about her day and maybe he could figure out her name again. ”Undt you? How is your day going?”

Grae attempted to suppress a smile as the man put his hands up at the sound of his name, as if he was in trouble or something. Perhaps he was used to following strict rules of where you could and couldn't go down in the lower levels. Security was much more tight there. Fortunately, mid-level employees were allowed to roam around (mostly) wherever they pleased.

She was also glad to hear his unmistakable accent. Now she remembered - Adam was the bloke from Germany. Grae was quite skilled with remembering names, faces, and job titles of the people she met at orientation, but life stories? Not so much. She was also quite oblivious to the fact that others might not be so adept at recalling names. "Well, you're in the right place! I was just taking the long way back to my office," Grae said, gesturing to the DIMC sign. While she worked on the sixth floor, she often enjoyed taking the stairs, stopping at each floor for a quick meander. Short walks and chitchats with coworkers helped keep her energized throughout the day.

"I'm doing well, save for a few apparition emergencies this morning. But nothing a quick trip to St. Mungo's couldn't fix," she replied, thinking back to the nasty splinching incident earlier today. Thank Merlin, the healer reassured them that the boy was going to be just fine. "How about yourself? Working on anything interesting lately?" Grae was perfectly aware that unspeakables weren't really allowed to talk about their work outside of their department, but she enjoyed teasing them a bit nevertheless.

In-the-right-place…was the woman sincere or was she being facetious? He couldn’t really tell. Because this area looked nothing like how he remembered DMIC to look. And he was pretty certain (despite not remembering her name) that she didn’t work in international relations. He leaned in closer to the sign.

Annnnddd promptly realized he had been staring at the DIMC sign for the past 10 minutes. Man, did he feel stupid. He certainly wasn’t going to tell Zita about this when he talked to her later. Not happening. Then again, she would probably find it funny and he did enjoy making her laugh. He realized he was lost in thoughts as Grace or Graines continued chatting about apparition emergencies. Ah, yes, now he remembered. Grae was her name. Hey, he was close wasn’t he? Nope – not at all. He pulled his glasses off and rubbed at his eyes with back of his hand. ”Sound busy. Hope you vere not ze one seeking healzz help.” He had no idea what her normal work-day entailed. For all he knew, St. Mungo’s was a normal stop on her daily checklist of things to do. As for him? Well, he’d spent the morning working on a love potion –only to have it blow up in his face. Luckily, he kept a supply of antidote for the potion on hand, or else he’d probably be down in his office trying to kiss a fish. Or worse – Laurel. He shuddered at the thought.

He of course, couldn’t tell Grae about the love potion, so instead he popped his glasses back on his face and then (looking in the wrong direction) said, ”Schtill trying to simple ze volfsbane potion.” It was his go-to conversational topic. It wasn’t work related so it was fair game, yet still let people know he was a potioneer. Some people didn’t like to discuss Lycanthropy, but Adam was raised, despite his family history, to think of those infected as victims, not threats. Therefore it was a topic he didn’t shy away from. Also, it was his life’s goal to make the potion more accessible to those who needed it. He’d determined that in order to do so, the potion needed to be easier to brew and, well, tasting better wouldn’t hurt right?

"It wasn't me, thank Merlin!" she replied with a shake of her head. "I just had to accompany a young wizard who left his right foot in the Atrium. And on his first try! I felt bad for him." He had been so excited to get his apparition license, but he couldn't even make it past the first practical test. And why was it that they seemed to be leaving parts of their lower appendages behind lately? When Grae first started at the Ministry, the most common splinching happened with little parts of the face like eyebrows or earlobes. But in the past month, she'd seen a toenail, a shin, and now an entire foot. Strange indeed.

She raised her eyebrows at Adam's mention of the wolfsbane potion. "A very fascinating cause," Grae said, although she was fairly certain he was lying. Wouldn't it be exciting to sneak into the DoM one day to find out what they were working on down there? Of course, she'd never actually do anything like that - she treasured her job too much. But it was an entertaining idea. "Rumors were swirling about a werewolf attack a few months ago at Primrose Hill, which I thought was odd, because what in the world was a werewolf doing in the middle of London? Although it could have been those gossipy old witches in my building just stirring up drama again." Thankfully, Grae had never encountered a real werewolf before, and she hoped to keep it that way. Nevertheless, the news about a werewolf roaming the city unnerved her.

A glance down at her watch told her that she should get back to her office soon, as she had a few appointments this afternoon that she needed to prepare for. But she would much rather make small talk than return to her looming pile of apparition exams, so she figured she'd hang around for a few more minutes. "So I'm assuming you're fixing your VISA because you have some exciting travels coming up? Where to?" She wondered if he was heading home to Germany or somewhere else completely. Grae really wasn't trying to be nosy, even though it often came across that way - she just never got the chance to travel herself, so she liked to live vicariously through other people.

Grae really wasn't trying to be nosy, even though it often came across that way - she just never got the chance to travel herself, so she liked to live vicariously through other people.

Grae’s relief was a little contagious and he found himself nodding and sharing her concern about the failed apparition attempt. ”I remember mein own try.” He rubbed an ear. ”Zankfully, I only lost an ear once.” But hearing it was common made him feel a little better about his own failed attempts. Still, it was concerning to hear that more people were having trouble than usual. Maybe it had something to do with the failed lifts and memos and some of the problems that had happened on Level 9. Could there be a magic inhibitor on the building? ”Do ze problems only happen inside ze buildingk?” he asked, unable to stop his train of thought.

”Werewolfe life up in all type uff places.” he replied, completely unworried about one possibly being in London. In fact, there were likely more in town than anyone really wanted to admit. The thing it, they were often still feared and persecuted so much that Adam was sure most of them tried to keep their conditions secret. He’d also completely missed her facial que of not believing him. If he had, he might have thought she was teasing him. As it was, he thought she was sincere. ”Some day I vill figure it out.” After all, every failure was a success in it’s own way.

Travel plans? Him? No…not really. He just liked to be able to go home to visit his father when he could. Still., the idea of traveling did sound good. Perhaps he could talk Zita into a short trip someplace warm. ”Chust to Vittlich. Mein family iss schtill zere. But a trip does sound good. Any suggestions?”

Simone had been busy since she joined the ministry and her biggest accomplishment so far was just keeping a low profile it seemed, but what she wanted to get done was fixing a few things, so it seemed she was being a great and amazing department head. So to the lifts she went with a few employees.

"So I have read some reports but could anyone get me up to speed on how these broke, when, and what have you actually tried to do about fixing them." She truly hoped that it was just broke and left like that, but from what she had heard fixing was not really going to happen at the time.

Her lips played in a small amused smile at her own thoughts while she waited for someone to answer.

Chloe wasn't typically involved with transport matters that didn't involve portkeys, but she also wasn't one to shy away from the opportunity to kiss up to the new department head. Even if she didn't entirely trust her, which was all the more reason for the 32 year old to volunteer for this mission. She'd glanced over the reports only just before volunteering, and so honestly she probably didn't know much more than Simone.

"A freak incident, I believe. Nothing really has been done about fixing them. They were de-prioritized." Actually she had no idea about that, but it sounded legit and that the ministry would put forward other cases that were higher in concerns.

"De-prioritized?" Her eyebrow raised at that comment, because in a ministry, especially one that had this many departments a lift would be the key thing to have fixed or at least she would think, but she held back the smirk she wanted to have on her lips to look very confused and annoyed. Tapping her tongue to the roof of her mouth she just looked towards the lifts.

"These need fixed now, no more excuses. I'm not sure what the other department head was focused on, but to have a smooth running ministry you need to have transportation working, not just set aside for someone else to do it." Her eyes moved back towards the lifts, she figured she knew what to do, but she needed to have employees doing their jobs as well.

"What has been tried, what can we try."

"What has been tried, what can we try."
Chloe merely shrugged at that. "I guess there were other more pressing matters. There were other ways to get up and down to the different floors."

What has been tried, she honestly didn't know if anything tried, but she found herself following the woman's gaze over to the lifts. Honestly, no one had really put anyone in charge of fixing them. They weren't hired as engineers. Technically the job description said to handle portkeys, and none of the areas within transportation really dealt with internal transportation of the lifts. Perhaps they needed to establish another division to work on that, but who was she to judge or suggest anything of the matter.

He was on his way back to the office, having spent a portion of the morning down in the Courtrooms listening in on the ridiculous trials that Zabini and Goldwasser’s Geological Investigation squad were conducting. It was as giant witch-hunt, which in and of itself was ironic since they were trying to accuse witches and wizards of not really belonging here in the magical community. Still, he wanted to be prepared (and to give Ferguson a little back up should he need it) in case he or worse, his husband were called down there for investigation. So far, Sachin had managed to keep a low profile and for that, Conley was sincerely grateful.

He was paying more attention to the correspondence he was reading then to where he was going. It seemed things were not going any better in France than here in the UK and that was alarming. The French Ambassador, Valentin Roux, had been spending most of his time in Paris instead of in London and this correspondence had been sent to his home and not the ministry. Despite that, Conley hadn’t had time to read it that morning, not with getting Radhika ready to go to her grandparents. He sometimes missed dropping her off at the daycare downstairs, but there was no way he as trusting the Ministry with his possibly muggle-daughter.

Like Roux, he hadn’t seen much of the ambassadors that usually spent a good deal of time operating inside of the Ministry. So it was perhaps a good thing that Conley had managed to slip a few of the longer-serving and Conley-trusted ambassadors pins before they were recalled to the respective countries. If action was needed, then at least a few people in varying countries would be ready to answer the call. He stepped into the Mid-level corridor from the stairs, since Conley didn’t take the Lifts if he could manage it (he still didn’t trust them after they had trapped his husband and Roux together) as he rolled up the parchment in his hands.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Lucille needed to keep her mind right to prevent putting herself in too much danger so she had exited the greenhouse on level four and was collecting her thoughts in the corridor. It was unusual on her part but for some reason, her "Only Purebloods are superior" way of thinking wasn't sitting entirely right. That had to be rectified but how?

Inhaling a breath in, Lucille spotted Conley. "Hello," she greeted him rather cooly. After all, he was of mixed blood hence her tone.

It was really starting to get tiresome. And by that he meant the tone people were taking with him. He could only guess it was because of blood status on is name tag. How those who were muggle-born were handling this with any semblance of saniety was beyond him. It took all he had to fight the urge to snap back at the lady. Perhaps she was just having a bad day. Because not everyone was drinking the Kool-Aid here. Right?

Funny, usually Conley was the paranoid one and now he was busy trying to justify people’s actions. He slipped the rolled up piece of parchment into his inner jacket pocket as he fixed one of his more chipper smiles to his face. ”Afternoon,” he replied, in chipper manner as if he hadn’t heard the tone. ”Busy day?” Might as well ask and get this over with right? If she was going to snub him for his nametag, then so be it. She could be on her way and he could go on his.

Oh how he longed for the days people when people didn’t realize who he was.

Restless.

That was the only word to describe how Sachin felt today. He couldn’t quite understand why today of all days he felt intensely so. There was a quick stop he needed to make in India but he wanted to see Conley before he left. Maybe it was him being sentimental but he went with his gut feelings and headed over to the Ministry.

At least their daughter was in the safety of her grandparents’ company. That was one less worry for him. These were his thoughts as he stepped off the lift, his feet taking him to the appropriate corridor. Speaking of the husband… Sachin recognised the form of Conley immediately. The woman was also familiar though she wasn’t on a buddy-buddy level with her.

“Excuse me,’’ the Ambassador told the duo politely by means of interruption. “Good afternoon.’’ he added to the woman. “Hi, Con,’’ Conley might be surprised to see him there right now. And more surprising was Sachin saying Conley's nickname when Sachin usually used the man's full first name while at the Ministry in an effort to keep things somewhat professional in the setting.

"What are you doing here?" he asked as his eyes landed on his husband. Did he sound upset? Maybe. But he was mostly surprised. Sachin was not supposed be anywhere near the Ministry today. Had something gone wrong? Was their daughter alright? The familiar use of his nickname had him alarmed. Sachin and he were usually very careful about maintaining professionalism while inside the Ministry walls.

But before Sachin could answer his questions, the pin on Conley's lapel flashed. He glanced down at it and then over at Sachin's. His too was glowing and a soft cry filled his ears. Conley's wand was in his hand, a fast draw the Department Head hadn't needed to use in years. He pointed it towards Lucille in case she had any inclination of pulling it on him or his husband.

Lucille watched as the pins that the two gentlemen were wearing glowed and formed into the shape of a phoenix. She instantly had a sneaking suspicion as to what was happening but was distracted by Conley aiming his wand at her. Lucille looked him squarely in the eyes and said cooly, "I need to make sure my cousin Fiona is okay. I am heading for Hogwarts and I will make sure she is safe."

She was now in a moral dilemma.
