Default Level 10 Courtrooms

Primarily used by the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, the courtrooms on level 10 vary size capacity as well as the severity of the trials held within them.

In courtroom one, trials regarding blood status, minor misdemeanors, or smaller gatherings of Wizengamot members, in particular those who serve on some of the various subcommittees, tend to find themselves in here. With seating for approximately 20, it is one of the courtrooms with a (dare we say it?) homey vibes.

Moving up in the numbers, courtroom seven is one of the more sleekly designed. There is a fully equipped press box up in the back and the high dais, which usually seats the chief Warlock, the Minister of Magic, the Senior Undersecretary and the Head of Magical Law Enforcement as required, is very shiny and modern.

At the end of the long corridor is courtroom 10.The largest of the Ministry of Magic courtrooms, it is big enough to seat the entire Wizengamot. It is very grand with high ceilings and stadium-type seating. There is a lot of history in this room; some of the greatest trials of Wizarding History have happened in here. When the room isn't full, it echoes quite a bit. Some of the Wizengamot seats here have comfortable cushions, but there are less cushions than there are seats, so sometimes there is a bit of a rush to get one, especially if the trial is to be a long one.

The urge to pinch the bridge of his nose and groan was absurd, but the Minister refrained out of respect for the court as well as Mr. Roller. "Mr. Roller, you denounced your right to further representation in front of myself and other members of this Wizengamot as well as Magical Law Enforcement when you were first brought in to custody...." From the day in Knockturn Alley "...and since that day forth you have never once mentioned the want to representation during you detainment." It was a piece of information he did not foresee them needing during this trial but Charles nonetheless nodded towards Fletcher to find the signed document from Roller himself to put the jury's minds at ease that this Ministry had not pulled the wool over anyone's eyes. "My Senior Undersecretary will provide signed proof of this agreement in which the accused used the Quill of Veracity, meaning forgery is impossible, now. Mr. Roller, can you confirm that this is indeed your signature?" Of course the jury would have their turn to look at it as well.

The Minister's eyes glazed over the charges once more and sighed. "Let the record reflect that the accused as not denied the counts of theft during the Quidditch World Cup, illegal tempering of a bludger during the Quidditch World Cup final match, illegal gambling, selling stolen goods, identity theft from the Department of International Magical Cooperation including passports and visas, nor the distribution of personal identifying information for unlawful purpose with Azkaban escapees." His gaze lifted back towards Roller, the need to clarify on the tip of his tongue that this man was not on trial for homicide but that these deaths were correlated with the actions he was accused of, but something was pushing him to summon Alexa Cambridge in to testify...to drill this involvement home. It was an unprecedented desire he could not quite understand but another glance around the courtroom and his tired blue eyes meeting the brown eyes of another pushed him onward. "This court would like to call Alexa Cambridge in to testify," he declared as his eyes met with one of the security to escort the former Law Enforcement head in.

He had waived his right to a lawyer? This surprised Conley. His experience with most delinquents had led him to believe most crooks like Roller were smarter than that. Their first act was usually to lawyer up. Worse, MACUSA was surely not going to like the fact that Roller didn’t have a lawyer. They would probably protest that the British Ministry was setting Roller up. Setting him up for what? Well, that was the big question wasn’t it? They wanted to try him for crimes in his own country, not watch him get shipped off to Azkaban for life.

Still…This Roller character is a pretty good actor, Conley was thinking as he watched the man’s reaction to the litany of crimes that Charles read off. He wasn’t sure if the jury would buy the act however, the Ministry had complied a pretty big case against Roller. Conley hadn’t talked to the man personally, but he had been required to file a statement about his watch before he had been able to reclaim it from Level 2. In a fit of antipathy, Conley had spent a good two hours cleaning and making sure his precious watch was properly sanitized and didn’t have any jinxes or other magic embedded. Sure, Law Enforcement should have checked the watch out themselves, but still, as the old adage went, if you want something done right, do it yourself.

Conley had been subconsciously fiddling with the (new) straps on his watch when he heard Sachin’s whisper. ”Hmm? No, not hiding. Just trying to stay out of the way,” he answered back just as quietly. He glanced at Sachin, then scooted over so that his husband could join him. He hadn’t bothered to put his wand away after summoning his own cushion and so, he quickly summoned another for Sachin. ”I thought you were busy?”

How long had it been since she set foot in this courtroom—in the ministry for that matter? Months. Her perception of time was still a little hazy but it was a long time. Too long perhaps. Her father thought it was too soon for her to be getting back into everything, but this was the first step to getting back into full work making it something she needed to do. Add to that the fact this was her chance to get Jack put away for all he did and it became something she was willing to push through.

She would consider it a necessary step for stopping the nightmares.

Lex followed her escort into the room, back straight, hazel eyes locked forward. She’d practiced for days and knew how she wanted to come across today. There would be no weakness. She would show she was as strong as ever and would not be intimidated.

At the front of the courtroom, Alexa took her seat at the witness stand and went through the swearing in process. She was very matter of fact in the way she carried herself. When she laid eyes on the lowlife, she forced herself to take a few deep breaths.

This was fine. This many competent people in one room, surely they wouldn’t allow her to get taken again. Nothing to worry about. This...it would be alright. Breeeeathe.

Right, the paper Roller had signed, where was the paper... er, the affidavit...where was it... aha, here it was. Senior Undersecretary Fletcher produced the signed statement from within his tidy black attaché case with a flourish. He quickly tapped his wand on it to duplicate the document, and then sent the signed copies floating gently toward the jury, one for each member. The Minister, of course, received the original in his hand, and then one copy went floating toward Roller too. All of this was a good show of the honesty and thorough investigative work of the British Ministry of Magic, and, obviously, proof that Roller was lying.

Fletcher stood up when Alexa Cambridge came in, partly out of respect for the victim, and partly because he had to ask her a few questions now. He wore a somber but concerned expression on his handsome face as he watched her take her seat.

"Ms. Cambridge," he greeted the former head of law enforcement gently, after the swearing in bit, "thank you for joining us today. Can you please describe for the Court the events of the 24th of September 2101, including anything you remember regarding your... abduction, and naming anyone involved in your subsequent imprisonment until the 23rd of December 2101?"

Was kidnapping an insensitive word to use here? He thought so. It didn't seem severe enough. He waited patiently for her answer, the perfect picture of a concerned listener.

Alexa must've had her dad ask her that question 100 times in the last week alone. This was too important to come and reel off the top of her head. There was too much at stake and too wide a margin for error should her mind begin to be less than cooperative. Even now, it threatened to derail itself with flashes of the incidents in question.

Lex squeezed the stress ball she'd brought in with her, kneading it in her palm to expel the excess energy currently coursing through her.

"It was during the Azkaban breakout--September 24th. Didn't realize at the time, but a few of our Aurors had been replaced by polyjuiced duplicates. They got me alone when we went looking for the warden." She gave a particularly hard squeeze to the ball, feeling like she'd once again been grabbed and transported--but logically she knew she hadn't. Everyone was still present, she was still sitting in the witness box, nothing had changed.

"Didn't see who it was at first, but when we got to the little hideout of sorts, it was him--Jack Roller." To keep the record straight, she needed to say his name.

"In the months that followed, he tried extracting vital but sensitive information from me, regarding the department of magical law enforcement." And another hard squeeze. "He wasn't successful but that didn't stop him from trying." If nothing else, Alexa could say that she hadn't bent to his torture tactics. "When he realized the crucio-ing wouldn't work, he was set to get rid of me--to kill me." Again, to keep the record as straight as possible. "But I managed to escape shortly after our arrival down in Knockturn Alley. That's when I was rescued. December 23, 2101."

Ziggy had, weirdly enough, not ever sat on a jury before. Even with the very few muggle movies and television shows she had seen, it was still nothing like being here in person. Her empathy went out for Roller. He seemed ill informed and fro unfortunate circumstances, and he clearly hadn't understood what had happened when he had signed for not wanting a lawyer. However, the charges mounting against him were momentous! Ziggy pursed her lips as Alexa Cambridge was called to the stand and...listened to her story.

Roller seemed to think he hadn't done these things. Cambridge clearly had her experience outlined very well.

Merlin.

Her tummy rolled with anxiety, and she remembered to breathe as she waited for the next step of the process.

"That's my signature," he agreed, but he shook the paper at Minister Blowhard so hard it ripped a little. "But I didn't sign this! Just like I didn't waive my right to a lawyer!"

Jack was so caught up on the fact that he had supposedly killed someone and/or kidnapped someone, that he didn't even realize that Cambridge had taken the witness stand. His face continued to contort in odd ways as he turned in small circles to look around the courtroom. How come nobody would believe him? He tried making eye contact with a few people, but they didn't seem to care. ”Azkaban?! I’m not nearly dumb enough to go anywhere near - ” He paused as his eyes landed on a face near Minister Windbag that seemed familiar. Why did the clerk look familiar?!

”September 24th? No no no… I was in Knockturn Alley that day!” At least he thought he had been. There seemed to be a few gaps in his memory. In the past yer, he’d woken up more than once in places he didn’t remember traveling to or remember why he had gone to in the first place. There was one thing he did remember: a face. The pretty face of the person who had hired him to buy some potion ingredients. He narrowed his eyes as he stared at the clerk. She certainly did look familiar. If only she’d stop scribbling and look up. Maybe…maybe he could get her attention? He glanced around at the Jury as if trying to get their sympathies and then his gaze locked back on the clerk lady. He balled up the piece of paper with his signature on it and threw it in her direction. ”I didn’t kidnap her,” he yelled. ”Do I look smart enough to kidnap the head of a law enforcement agency?!”

Soon enough first Evangeline entered the courtroom and finally the minister and the court scribe joined Fletcher in the Wizengamot signally even before Charles Hollingberry spoke up that the trial was about to begin. The jurors were sworn in and Simon glanced over each of them in turn, hoping all would be well. As Jack Roller was called forward, he looked to the door for the officers he himself had assigned to keep this watch of him, the team dutifully bringing him into the courtroom and where he was to stand as the trial proceeded.

Simon listened to the introduction even though he was aware of the charges already. The breakout of Azkaban had been a disaster. The kidnapping of Lex had been a hit at the time, though she was back and they were working on the missing persons. But the death of the young YATI was a blow at the end. The man on trial was believed to have done some serious actions and one only hoped the full affect of justice would prevail. They didn’t need more of that sort of drama over their heads and the guilty parties remaining free.

Of course the man in question denied his refusal of a lawyer and his guilt…at least to certain things. That didn’t say it was true innocence. Simon listened as the Minister spoke once more, awaiting further reaction, his gaze switching in search of Alexa when she was called forth as the first witness. The young woman someone he hadn’t seen at all lately and he couldn’t help but wonder how she was holding up despite how she was presenting herself. He knew her to be a tough cookie, but that didn’t mean at least part of that façade was an act.

The security man tried to give a look of encouragement her way in case she caught his eyes while she was on the stand before returning to his observations of the courtroom. Fletcher stepping forward to begin the questioning before Roller once more denied.

Leo felt ill-suited for this. The more the trial proceeded the more it made him anxious. He had never taken part in a jury before this one and he wasn't sure what his role really was. Minister Hollingberry had put it plainly enough. So he just had to man-up and do his part. Shouldn't be so difficult right? Sigh. Leo took the signed paper that floated up to him, reading over the affidavit where Roller waived his right to a lawyer. Roller claimed it was his signature on the paper, but that he hadn't signed it. It made no sense. Confused Leo pulled his focus away from Roller, that did his best to deny things in a very loud mouthed manner. He instead looked over at the witness stand, listening to Ms Cambridge story. Poor woman. Nobody should have to be forced to endure torture of any kind neither magical or muggle. It left scars.

As the trial got under way, Ronan found himself subconsciously leaning forward slightly. Something wasn't sitting right with him about this whole thing. First off, just how stupid would one have to be to waive their right to a lawyer? Something that the man in front of them was denying doing, by the way. And he was finding himself believing Roller, despite the fact he was confirming that it was in fact his signature on the paperwork. Something just wasn't adding up.....

Then Alexa was testifying and.... well, he didn't really know their former head all that well but he'd never thought of her as a liar. Yet, Roller was quite adamant that he had not, in fact, been the one to abduct her. And he found himself still believing the guy. Roller seemed quite confused, in fact. So now Ronan's mind was churning over the facts quickly. Someone had signed that waiver. Someone looking exactly like Roller had abducted Alexa. Now, the chances that someone had forged Roller's signature well enough to fool even the man himself, well, they were there but extremely unlikely. Adding in the confusion....

"He was Imperioed...." he breathed out just loud enough to be heard by those in his direct vicinity. It all added up.

Now, what to do with his theory? If he stood up and said it now, it was entirely possible that would be viewed as a betrayal by the rest of the department, seeing how many of their own had been affected by all the events surrounding the Azkaban breakout and all that had happened since then. But, when would he have such an opportunity to stop an injustice in motion again? It would definitely be too late if the jury found the man guilty.

Making his decision, he stood and stepped over to the minister. "Minister Hollingberry, in light of some new information, we need to stop this trial. The MLE needs to investigate further." It was incredibly likely, in fact almost certain, the man in question would say no, but he had to try.

Alphonsine gave the Minister a soft, sweet smile as he addressed her and her record keeping. Why yes, of course she would let the record show that the corrupt Mr. Roller waived his right to representation as well as his very long list of charges. And Merlin, wasn't he dramatic? She shook her head lightly at his antics as she scribbled away.

But she did lift her eyes briefly as Ms. Cambridge was escorted in. It really was such a harrowing account, wasn't it, with an almost tragic end. And yes, she confirmed that was indeed Mr. Roller who kidnapped and tortured her. A nearly imperceptible quirk tugged at the corner of her lips as Alphonsine nodded to herself and jotted down that very important confirmation as well in her recording.

She continued scribbling details of the trial, until she was hit in the arm with the balled up piece of parchment thrown by Mr. Roller just at the moment of his loud outburst. Slowly, Alphonsine lifted her eyes to the defendant and... it was only for the briefest of moments as she affixed him with her soft, sweet smile.

But it was the man approaching the Minister, whom she was sitting next to, who drew her attention and she raised an eyebrow as she heard his whisper. Stop the trial?

Noises were coming down the hallway outside of Courtroom 10. At first, the ruckus likely only drew the attention of those sitting closest to the doors. It sounded like angry footsteps and muffled orders. Who could possibly be making such a racket while an important trial was going on?

Just after the piece of paper hit Rosier in the arm, the doors to the courtroom burst open and the lights in the room went out!

A green light split the room, accompanied by a rushing sound that muffled a dull thud.

Darkness swallowed up the green light and just as suddenly as the lights went out, they flickered back to life.

In the middle of the courtroom Jack Roller lay crumbled on the floor like a discarded rag doll.

The loud noises from outside the courtroom caught Simon’s attention and he moved along the perimeter of the room from where he had been perching to investigate the disturbance. What in Merlin’s beard was going on out there? No one from his team had sent any alerts. He was almost at the door when they burst open, the sudden absence of light only adding to the surprise that made him immediately raise his wand.

The familiar green flash right past him kept the security head from rushing out but once the lights came back on the next moment, Simon was ready to push through. His wand at the ready to defend against any spells other than the killing curse as he carefully moved out, or to shoot anything that proved to be a threat and likely cause of the spell.

Things had just gotten terribly worse!

Adi’s gaze moved from the Minister to Roller, though it sat on Roller for longer periods as he studied the accused. He wasn’t buying anything but he had to admit, if Roller was lying then the man was doing a mighty fine job of it. The copy of the signed document floated his way and Adi plucked it out of air to study it. Like the Minister had said, since the Quill of Veracity had been used then there was no way that forgery was involved. All seemed to be in order there. But there was still something about the way at which Roller was fiercely defending himself that got to Adi. True, criminals did defend themselves to heights that were often surprising… but still.

His attention switched to Alexa as she went through the usual procedure. It had been a while since Adi had seen her but to him, she still looked as determined as ever. And so the questioning began, to which he paid careful attention to even though he was slightly distracted by one of the Ministry officials {Ronan}. Such was the force of the man’s focus on these happenings, he failed to register the noises outside until the lights in the room went out. There was hardly time to register the green light before that vanished and was replaced with the usual lights. Adi blinked rapidly as he practically forced his eyes to readjust to the sudden changes. Roller on the floor was the first thing he noted.

Sachin noted how much Conley was playing around with the watch straps. Yes, he knew how much that watch meant to his husband. The Ambassador made himself as comfortable as he could {not that he found the seats uncomfortable but since they might be here for a while…}. “Cleared my schedule,’’ he whispered. It just seemed so important that he be there for Conley, at least. Sachin turned his complete attention to the events, his heart going out to Ms. Cambridge. The horrors that she had been through… he wouldn’t wish that for anyone. Occasionally, he’d throw a look at Conley: a skeptical one, a puzzled one; it just depended on the narrative that was happening at the said time.

When the lights went out though and the green light flashed, Sachin automatically and protectively reached for Conley’s hand closest and he held on tightly. He even leaned into the man’s side {ooc: permission granted by Krellie on both counts}, for Sachin knew what that light meant. He had never seen it before but he knew too by that thud. That was why when the lights came back on, he was not surprised but horrified to see Roller on the floor.

Straightening up but still holding onto Conley’s hand, Sachin tore his eyes from Roller’s body to find Eureka. He was protective of his friend too and he wasn’t sure how she’d react to what had just happened.

Rula looked between the copy of the affidavit and the man with puzzled grey eyes. So he had waived his right to a lawyer with a signature and everything...but also insisted he hadn't? And he only protested against a few among the long list of charges. Either he was an excellent actor...or he really was confused. Or both, somehow? She...was unsure.

But then Alexa Cambridge was called in to testify, and Rula's heart went out to the woman. She had been through so much, as she proceeded to describe, and she clearly stated that it was Roller who had...who had done those things.

Yet he remained just as confused, even insisting he had been somewhere else entirely? He had to be lying, surely, because no one could argue that Ms. Cambridge had gone through all that she said she had. So...hm...

A man stepped forward to speak to the Minister - and then the doors burst open and the lights went out.

A flash of green light that was almost blinding from the sudden appearance in the dark.

Then the lights were back on.

And Roller was on the ground, silent and unmoving.

Inhaling sharply, Rula covered her mouth with both hands, eyes wide and unable to look away from the body.

The United States Ambassador always seemed to be running around. She had worked at the British ministry for quite a few years now, but she still seemed to get lost. She had tried to find Conley when she had gotten the owls for the orders to get Roller brought to America for all his crimes so that they could get things situated before the trial had even begun, but it seemed the owl had taken his good old time and the papers came just a tad to late.

No worries though Hill figured she could just get to the court room and get things straightened out, she was just hoping that charming minister wouldn't be too upset that she interrupted his court room. As she hurried towards the towards she thought it was odd they were open, but either way Hill figured she wasn't too late if it hadn't even started yet.

Hurrying in she was holding up the papers, "Minister, excuse me minister. I have some papers to take Roller..... " She stopped without finishing the sentence, because her eyes noticed the criminal she was to gather on the floor and the others looks very off. "What is going on?"

Charles felt a deep hankering to slouch in his seat and just rest his brow against his palm for a few sweet moments, but those were moments he could not afford. Least of all in this setting. So he instead busied himself with looking over the documents and other pieces of evidence in front of him while his Senior Undersecretary took over the proceedings for a bit. He had heard these testaments from Alexa already but they made them no easier to stomach.

As did Roller's continued outbursts.

There was absolutely no way that the man before them had not been the one to sign the waiver and Charles was struggling to make sense of the rest of the man's statements. Statements that were unfortunately not welcomed at this time. Rising a bit from his seat to inform the man of this, the Minister's eyes wandered around the courtroom and fell on darling Alphonsine once again which then assisted in his voice becoming firmer and steadier as he addressed Roller. "You will contain yourself, Mr. Roller, or this court will have no choice but to hold you in contempt. You will have your turn to address the court in due time." A deep and assertive tone that was rare for the former Gryffindor to dip into.

Charles was just about to resume his seat when the young Auror stood an began to approach the Wizengamot, something unheard of and well above the level of authorization for court proceedings and, quite frankly, insulting. "You forget yourself, Mr. Carter," Charles warned the lad gravely. Normally he would have place a hand on the young man's shoulder but such paternal gestures were inappropriate for the setting. Charles would not be stopping any trial based purely on he said she said folly. "You will return to your seat or I will be forced to have yo-----"

But it was a warning that was loss to the darkness. Literally.

The courtroom covered in a menacing blanket of black, Charles was reaching for his wand when there came a flash of blinding green light. "DOWN!" he barked, himself immediately ducking beneath the wooden rounded table before him...but not before his forehead struck
edge of the surface with such force that he bled from the brow. Charles drew his wand from its holster as he popped back up, one eye closed as the blood dripped over it, and prepared himself to confront whoever had made the assassination attempt on his life. He was the Minister, after all.

The scene that greeted him was not what he had expected. Yes, there had been an assassination attempt but not on the Minister. A successful one at that.

Jack Roller lay on the ground. Dead.

"Bennett. Have your team secure the perimeter. Make sure no one without questioning and having their wands inspected," he immediately ordered of his head of security. Thankfully all, including himself, had had their wands weighed prior to entering the courtroom so that should make for quick work with the efficient team Simon lead. "You may use the jury room to proceed." His eyes darted over to Evangeline and gave her a firm nod...perhaps too firm a nod as the whole room began to spin and Charles nearly collapsed, and would have had his hands not mercifully gripped the very rounded edge with which he had stuck his forehead against.

The Minister looked wobbly...and dreadfully pale and his eyes could hardly focus on the arrival of the American ambassador, though he did manage to look towards Conley with an pained exhale to hopefully indicated that Charles needed him to handle that.

With Kaiser on errand elsewhere, he was next beckoning Alphonsine nearer to assist himself.

Eureka was focusing on Jack's reactions to what the Wizengamot were explaining to him, and to be honest it seemed that he was either slow (like she originally thought) or seemed to have amnesia? Or... something. It was confusing, the whole exchange. In fact, Jack didn't seem at all the way she imagined a criminal would be, he was too flustered and loud. They were supposed to be menacing and eerily quiet, right?? She really didn't know what to make of all of this.

Except maybe someone was using him? Or just his face. But she wasn't one to invest in conspiracy theories...

Before she looked around to her fellow jurors to see if they had the same confused look on their faces, the lights went out. Her heart started beating so fast and so hard just as she heard the minister yell 'down'. As the green flashlight sped through the room, she bent down and covered her head. She was so scared she could feel the blood drain from her body and leave her shaking and pale.

Raising her head when the lights came on, the courtroom looked like an aftermath of an assault. Jack was lying on the ground seemingly lifeless, and the MLE were rushing to act by the minister's orders--who did not look his best. Who was that coming in after all this? She had no energy to think or move, so she just swallowed and sat on the edge of her chair waiting to see if they were to go home now...?? Please...???

Roller couldn't just interrupt the trial like this! Fletcher raised a hand in a shhh-ing motion at the man, then sternly nodded along as Charles corrected the criminal. He had more questions for Alexa, and glanced down at his notes...

But of course, of course, all hell had to break loose then. First there was the auror, or whoever he was, approaching the bench. Did no one here have respect for the trial proceedings?! Then the lights went out, and Fletcher, thank Merlin, had the good instinct to duck down with Charles. He was primarily concerned for the Minister's safety! This was obviously an attack intended for the head of government! The senior undersecretary also whipped out his wand, just in case, and was about to cast Lumos when suddenly a green light illuminated the room.

"Oh noooooooo," he groaned quietly. Everyone knew what that green light meant. Fletcher peeked up over the edge of the railing once the lights came back on. Who had been the target, if not Charles?! The Minister was secure beside him, here, and peeking up further, Fletcher saw the victim lying crumpled on the ground.

Roller.

Well, this was certainly a twist he hadn't been expecting. Fletcher swallowed a dry lump of fear in his throat, his free hand rubbing at his brow as he tried to decide what they should do next. "Charles..." he glanced toward the man and saw his forehead was bleeding, but Alphonsine was already there to help him. Alright, good job, then. Thankfully, Simon was here to run security, and presumably, Evangeline would start leading the new investigation that would be conducted... Fletcher nodded to her. With the Minister needing to be moved to a secure location immediately, Fletcher supposed he should help restore some order here. Obviously, they would not be calling any other witnesses in today. He cast sonorous on himself so he could be heard over the flurry of activity now.

"Jurors... please form a line to be escorted through security and out of the Ministry. You are dismissed for today." And he would need to speak to the Minister to decide in what capacity (if any) they would be needed after today. The defendent was, after all, now deceased.

"Ministry employees, please remain calm and cooperate with the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. Do not approach the body." There, and to be sensitive to the deceased party... Fletcher conjured up a white sheet that floated down to cover Jack Roller.

What a mess. His first Wizengamot trial, and it had just descended into chaos.

Default Hillary, Sachin and lots of name drops
*randomly tagged* | Norbert(a) | The Wandmaker (tm)

”Hmmm,” Conley acknowledged Sachin quietly. Despite the solemnness of the situation, a small smile tugged at the corner of his lips. He knew his husband had been working hard on the black-market phoenix issues and therefore Conley hadn’t really been expecting him to be here. The fact that the man had made time, made Conley feel appreciated. Sachin really did seem to understand him, and for that he’d always be grateful. Normally, he would have said thank you to Sachin, but Cambridge was now talking and he really wanted to hear what she had to say. Besides, Conley was certain that Sachin knew how much he was appreciated.

His right hand was tapping his wand gently on his thigh as he listened. It was a subconscious tick, (although usually it was a pen or his fingers that tapped) that indicated he was focusing deeply. He caught Sachin‘s looks and returned a few, all the while wondering if there was more to this proceeding than met the eye. As much as he felt for Cambridge, Roller sure was convincing about his innocence and he certainly didn’t look smart enough to orchestrate a mass breakout at Azkaban, let alone a kneazle farm. As for kidnapping? it really didn’t fit the persona of a pick-pocket. Conley had seen MACUSA’s file on the man and well, his litany of crimes there were more in line with petty thievery, a few cases of grand larceny, and black-market dealings. Roller was more shady menace than anarchist.

He was distracted by the sound of footsteps out in the corridor. Perhaps sitting by the doors had been a bad idea. Surely it was a clerk running errands? He glanced over his shoulder at the door. He turned back to the trial in time to watch Roller throw something at the clerk. Shortly after someone got up to approach Charles. This trial was turning into a circus. Was that Roller’s plan?

The footsteps seemed to be getting louder. It was distracting. Conley wondered if he should get up to see what the problem was. He leaned towards Sachin, whispering, ”Maybe I should-" Only he didn’t finish because the doors opened and the lights went out. As the green light flashed. Sachin’s hand grabbed his. Charles barked out ‘down!’ It felt like he had no time to react! The green light flashed and then the lights were back. Conley blinked a few times, his eyes struggling to adjust. And then he heard the worst possible thing that could happen right now (at least in regards to International Cooperation). Hillary Pen, the MACUSA Ambassador had just walked into the courtroom! He didn’t even had time to take in the body lying on the floor as his brain told him to get to work.

He stood up, tugging on Sachin’s hand which he didn’t realize he was still holding onto. ”Hillary!” He let go of Sachin’s hand and held both of his hands (his right still holding onto his wand) out in front of him in the universal sign of ‘stop.’ He didn’t need to see Charles' look to know to handle this. The minister had enough to deal with on his plate. ”There’s been a- “ he paused. Accident didn’t seem to be the right word. Complication seemed to imply there was something to correct. ”Murder.” He finally settled on. Because what else was the Killing Curse if not a form murder?

And then Fletcher’s voice was booming around the courtroom. Conley winced. Could the new department head be any more eager louder?! It wasn’t like people were screaming and losing their minds. In fact, most people just seem shocked. He glanced around the courtroom. Hillary and Sachin seemed to be the only people from his department here. He motioned for Hillary to move out of the isle and join him and Sachin in the seats. ”I think Law Enforcement is going to want to talk with everyone." He said to both of them. But her especially; she had been out in the hallway after all.

Yes, he knew what he was doing now was highly irregular. He had been raised by a former prosecutor, after all. But such a thing as his sudden realization was important. The warning from the minister, however, went unfinished as the lights went out and that sickening green light filled the air. Ronan, of course, ducked, cursing as he did so. One didn't have to be an auror to know what that light meant. And as soon as the lights came back on, he saw who had been hit. Roller. Which meant two things: 1) they would never know if Roller had been under the influence of Imperio and 2) they would never know who was responsible if he had been. Also, now they had this whole new thing to investigate.

Feeling the need to do something, he made his way over to guard the body. Just in case.

A Poop * k8 *

There was someone mumbling next to Minister Hollingberry that had Ziggy twitching her ear. She couldn't properly pay attention to what was happening! Roller seemed outraged, confused, and to be honest, he DID seem too dumb to have done all of this. There was nothing wrong with being.... well, dumb, and Ziggy's eyebrows were so furrowed until there was a noise - the lights went OUT -

And she ducked. Hollingsberry had said to get down, and with her kids in her head, she did without even thinking. You have to make it home to the kids..... was the only thought echoing throughout her body, and it wasn't with panic, but with a determined calmness. It was only when the lights flickered back on and Ziggy straightened up that she gasped, her hands indeed over her mouth. The green made sense; Jack Roller, the man in question...was.....dead.

She blinked a lot, a little shock, until she heard a man with a booming voice tell the jury they were no longer needed.....they had ALL just witnessed a MURDER. She had always thought her involvement in a murder would go much differently than this - MUUUUUCH differently - and what a useless witness she was in this moment, for the lights had been out, and she had seen nothing...had been solely paying attention to Roller and the mumbling man beforehand.

Absolute chaos. If someone had asked her, that was how Alphonsine would have described the courtroom as the lights went off. Or perhaps a controlled chaos. As soon as the lights came back on, her eyes found the vacant ones of the defendant as he lay crumpled on the floor. Pity.

She kept her eyes on him for just a beat, then let out an audible gasp as she drew a delicate hand to her mouth. "He's dead!" she cried out, displaying the same shock as everyone else in the room.

Alphonsine looked around the courtroom, assessing the situation, and soon caught sight of the Minister beckoning her over. She hadn't been too far from him, but she rushed over as she saw his state. "Minister, are you alright? You're bleeding." She reached a hand to his arm and looked up at him, a concerned expression on her face.

Hillary was just blinking at everything going on around her. She was trying to process and take in everything she had just found. Papers were still clutched in her hand. The first thing she noticed was the minister and then Conley was in front of her.

Murder?

Her eyes widened even more when all the pieces were going into place and she stepped around him to look at Roller on the floor. "Skies, he's dead?" Was she really going to have to contact the American ministry to tell them that the criminal they wanted was dead in a courtroom here at this ministry? That wasn't going to go well.

"I will need to get an owl out." Even though she said it she did move and take a seat. Her legs were feeling a little shaky now that she could process what was in front of her.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

There was a raw anger bubbling up at Jack’s denials. As if she didn’t know what she’d seen. As if she wasn’t the one who’d been there. Lex may have said as much, but she’d been to enough hearings and knew how to conduct herself. .

Everything had been fine, truly, probably mostly—until the sounds and the lights going out and the flash of green that sent Alexa crouching behind the witness stand, shield up in a flash. It was all she could do as her mind went blank and everything around her began to run at super speed.

The lights were back, there was mention of a murder, jurors being moved and law enforcement needing to step up. In short, there was work to be down. Alexa mentally kicked herself for crouching and hiding in the face of the threat. It was not how she was trained and yet it was the only thing her body wanted to do. She couldn’t let it happen again and chaos was the perfect cover for the worst things.

She needed to get up, assess the situation and begin investigating, but it didn’t take long to realize the fear she denied was crippling all the same. Try as she might, Lex couldn’t bring herself back to her feet. She could scarcely utter a word.

Who was securing the scene? Had far was the lockdown? Someone needed to figure this all out.

If only she could move. If only she could breathe.
