Default Duties and Training Information

In here you will find information on what each division within the DMLE does and is in charge of. It's meant to provide an idea of what you can expect your characters to be up to during a typical work period and help spark ideas if you'd like to develop little mini plots for your characters that you'd love to see being played out.

It involves training information and information on moving up in ranks should that be something of interest for your character.

MLES & Aurors

Hit Wizard

Local crimes that do not require special attention are handled by specially trained Hit Wizards, called Magistrates, that are assigned to police a given region. For instance, there is a Magistrate that has jurisdiction over London, and another for Hogsmeade Village and the surrounding area (though not at Hogwarts itself, which is self-policed). Hit Wizards are both Sheriff and Justice, and have the authority to investigate, arrest, and convict or acquit members of the magical populace in their jurisdiction. Naturally, if an investigation turns up evidence of Dark magic, the Hit Wizard must contact the Auror Office immediately.

SPOILER!!: Duties
Hit Wziards exist to lighten the load on the Wizengamot, serving as Justices for small crimes of local concern, including (but not limited to):
  • Littering
  • Vandalism
  • Public lewdness
  • Public drunkenness
  • Disturbing the peace
  • Trespassing on private property
  • Brawling (attacks resulting in severe or fatal injury are typically considered assault/murder, and sent up to the Aurors)
  • Illegal hexing/jinxing/cursing
  • Petty theft
  • Truancy
  • Illegal possession of controlled substances
  • Burglary (small scale)

Auror

The Aurors are an elite group of witches and wizards who battle the Dark Arts. They operate in some ways as soldiers but more often as intelligence agents, seeking out Dark wizards and defeating them, often in fierce wizard duels. Aurors are sometimes refered to as Dark Wizard catchers.

SPOILER!!: duties
Crimes that are always passed on to the Aurors include (but are not limited to):
  • Unauthorized use of the Dark Arts
  • Burglary (large scale, high profile)
  • Trespassing on Ministry property
  • Assault (resulting in true injury; minor fights are still handled locally — see brawling, above)
  • Assault of a Ministry official
  • Kidnapping
  • Manslaughter
  • Murder

YATI
Training to be an Auror takes three years after leaving Hogwarts; the Aurors ask for a minimum of five N.E.W.T.s, with nothing under "Exceeds Expectations" grade. Apart from Defence Against the Dark Arts, the recommended N.E.W.T.s include Charms, Potions (particularly the study of poisons and antidotes), and Transfiguration.

If a candidate for Auror training has the required academic qualifications, he or she must pass a background check for a criminal record, and must pass "a stringent series of character and aptitude tests at the Auror office." These tests assess skill in practical defence, perseverance and dedication, and the ability to react well to stress.

SPOILER!!: duties and training
Once accepted into the program, an Auror trainee's duties and training include (but are not limited to):

During YATI training, YATI will be expected to focus on improving their skills. Occasionally they may be asked to join low scale patrols to get a feel for field work and may be invited on low scale operations, however, their primary role is to train. It should be remembered they are not official members of the DMLE and most training is not handled within the ministry.

Year 1
  • Concealment and Disguise
  • Common Wizarding Law
  • Defensive Charms and Counter-Curses
  • Statute Violation Prevention
  • Muggle Evasion

Year 2
  • Hostage Negotiation
  • Magical Criminal Profiling
  • Stealth and Tracking
  • Arrest and Take Down
  • Control and Restraint

Year 3
  • Advanced Magical Combat
  • Advanced Potionmaking
  • Advanced Undercover Techniques and Survival
  • Enchantment Detection, Analysis and Reversal
  • Wizarding rights

MLES Officer in Training

As an entry level position, there are no prerequisites for this job. Aside from the required training undertaken in a three month orientation, either on the job or in a training institution, MLES Patrol Officers may apply to train in any Hit Wizard courses as they become available. Upon gaining the core Hit Wizard subjects and demonstrating applied competence in each, a patrol officer may apply for Hit Wizard certification which will be accepted or declined at the Department head's discretion. This upskilling process is expected to take approximately 4-5 years.

SPOILER!!: training
Training includes (but is not limited to):
Core subjects:
  • Year 1
  • Common Wizarding Law
  • Questioning and Interrogation
  • Statute Violation Prevention
  • Wizarding rights

    Year 2
  • Arrest and Take Down
  • Control and Restraint
  • Crowd Control
  • Muggle Evasion

    Year 3
  • Concealment and Disguise
  • Defensive Charms and Counter-Curses
  • Magical Forensics
  • Magical Fraud prevention
  • Magical Surveillance

Ministry Security

Security

Members of the Ministry Security team are tasked with the day to day security within the Ministry of Magic. Security officials are stationed throughout the ministry on various levels (with those stationed on Level 9 needing additional training and special clearance. These members are held to the same secrecy as unspeakables and even then are only permitted within the various rooms in situations that specifically require security intervention/extenuating circumstances). They are the first line of defense for mishaps and security breaches within the ministry, conceding to the Auror division in matters pertaining to the dark arts or high profile cases. (See Auror list for situations that get handed over).

SPOILER!!: duties
As a member of ministry security, duties will include:
  • Ministry Patrols
  • Security checks at points of entry
  • Upkeep of security charms and wards
  • Handling difficult individuals who are causing problems within the ministry or who pose a potential threat to others.
  • First response when chaos arises, effectively assessing the situation and handling it if it's within their jurisdiction or making the call to alert the appropriate authorities (ex. alerting the appropriate members of the creatures department in the case of a creature outbreak, calling in members of Transport if contraband portkeys are found or suspected on a ministry employee, etc)
  • Detaining problematic personnel until they can be properly dealt with.

Security Trainee
This is an entry level position that does not require any skills or OWLs. The job requirements are all skills that will be taught during the course of training. Initial training takes 3 months to get the Trainee up to speed on the most basic of security duties and expectations. Thereafter, a year of security training is required in order to fully join the security team within the ministry. Advancement is possible. Should a Trainee wish to increase in ranks, they can first work their way up to full security then begin training among the MLES trainees, for three years (in only the subjects not already covered during security training). If at that point, they are interested in work as a Hit Wizard/Witch they may join the ranks. If Auror is the end goal, some of the training is shared with MLES trainees but not all. They will have to undergo supplementary training to fill in the gaps through a special advancement program before joining the ranks of Auror.

SPOILER!!: Training and duties
In addition to working with a member of security in day to day ministry security task, trainings to be undergone include:
  • Arrest and Take Down
  • Common Wizarding Law
  • Control and Restraint
  • Crowd Control
  • Magical Perimeter Security
  • Security Management
  • Specialist Guarding Services
  • Wizarding rights

Wizengamot

Wizengamot
The Wizengamot functions as a combination of court and parliament. It is made up of around fifty members. Aside from the judges and the Head Warlock, there is a Court Scribe that records the proceedings while the Wizengamot is in session. The Minister for Magic, Senior Undersecretary to the Minister, and Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement have been known to attend significant trials and hearings. This division is made up several different roles ranging from entry level positions to the honoured position of Wizengamot.

SPOILER!!: Duties carried out
This division is responsible for:
  • Creating, passing, declining, repealing legislation that affect the british wizarding world.

  • Trying cases and passing out the suitable punishment in cases of crimes. (note: small scale crimes that require a day or two in prison are handled and sentences passed by the Hit Wizards. Wizengamot deal with the heavier crimes that carry sentences in Azkaban for long periods of time).

  • Dealing with matters that will affect a wizard's ability to continue using magic (i.e infractions that result in wand snapping and a ban from further magic).

  • Prosecutors will be responsible for bringing evidence against the accused in such a manner that there is no room for reasonable doubt. The following are considered circumstantial evidence and must be backed by other forms of evidence:
    • Testimony of ghosts and other spirits.
    • Testimony extracted under Veritaserum.
    • Information gained via divination or the Sight.
    • Information gained via Legilimency.
    • Extracted memories.
    • Information gained through the use of a Time-Turner.

Advancement within this department is entirely possible. Those holding an entry level position within this Department or those seeking some form of advancement must take on further studies. The criteria is as below:

SPOILER!!: Additional Studies required
Prosecution:
Year 1:
  • Common Wizarding Law
  • Magical Criminal Profiling
  • Magical Criminology
  • Magical Jurisprudence
  • History of Legislation

Year 2:
  • Advanced Wizarding Law
  • Magical Law and Legislation
  • Muggle-Wizard relations
  • Wizarding rights
  • Ethics

Year 3:
  • Practical application in a court setting under the advice of a prosecutor
  • Advanced Wizarding Rights
  • Advanced Ethics
  • Advanced Magical Criminology

Year 4:
  • Internship

Wizengamot:

This is at the discretion of the Minister for Magic. Minister Prosecutors, Legislators and Jurisprudence may file a petition to be added to the board once a position opens up. Experience, aptitude, conduct, psych eval results and background will all be put under consideration when a decision is to be made.
