Local crimes that do not require special attention are handled by specially trained Hit Wizards, called Magistrates, that are assigned to police a given region. For instance, there is a Magistrate that has jurisdiction over London, and another for Hogsmeade Village and the surrounding area (though not at Hogwarts itself, which is self-policed). Hit Wizards are both Sheriff and Justice, and have the authority to investigate, arrest, and convict or acquit members of the magical populace in their jurisdiction. Naturally, if an investigation turns up evidence of Dark magic, the Hit Wizard must contact the Auror Office immediately. AUROR
The Aurors are an elite group of witches and wizards who battle the Dark Arts. They operate in some ways as soldiers but more often as intelligence agents, seeking out Dark wizards and defeating them, often in fierce wizard duels. Aurors are sometimes refered to as Dark Wizard catchers. YATI
Training to be an Auror takes three years after leaving Hogwarts; the Aurors ask for a minimum of five N.E.W.T.s, with nothing under "Exceeds Expectations" grade. Apart from Defence Against the Dark Arts, the recommended N.E.W.T.s include Charms, Potions (particularly the study of poisons and antidotes), and Transfiguration.
If a candidate for Auror training has the required academic qualifications, he or she must pass a background check for a criminal record, and must pass "a stringent series of character and aptitude tests at the Auror office." These tests assess skill in practical defence, perseverance and dedication, and the ability to react well to stress. MLES OFFICER IN TRAINING
As an entry level position, there are no prerequisites for this job. Aside from the required training undertaken in a three month orientation, either on the job or in a training institution, MLES Patrol Officers may apply to train in any Hit Wizard courses as they become available. Upon gaining the core Hit Wizard subjects and demonstrating applied competence in each, a patrol officer may apply for Hit Wizard certification which will be accepted or declined at the Department head's discretion. This upskilling process is expected to take approximately 4-5 years. |
