Infant Magical Creatures Nursery Halfway between Professor Wayland's hut and the barn, you will notice a much smaller, light grey, and white barn. This is the Infant Magical Creatures Nursery. The nursery is where many infant creatures are taken care of when their parents can't take care of them. Many of these infant creatures are orphans, and Professor Wayland needs all the help he can get. If you look just inside the door you'll find shelves stocked with dragon hide gloves, goggles, brushes, clean rags, and anything else you could ever need to care for these adorable infant creatures. |
"Missed you," Felicity nuzzled into the side of Floyd's coat as she spoke, wondering what was going to happen to her Fishing an apple out of her bag, she offered it to the Aethonan on a flat hand, grinning as she took it from her. |
For Daehyun (Debpretrisor) Shera had managed to run from the lake to the second floor of the castle, after that a mixture of struggling to breathe and also the moving stair cases got in the way. On the way back she hadn't even bothered to try to run down the stair cases, instead accepting that they didn't just exist to convenience her and getting frustrated with them was pointless. She had stopped in the kitchens on the way to shove a few snacks in her bag along with filling up her bottle of water while she was there. Then she had bolted back to the infirmary, before slowly entering to see if Daehyun had already made it there or if she had beat him. Despite having travelled so much further. And being exhausted after that. Apparently she was there first. She hesitated in the doorway, waiting for Daehyun to show up. The creatures were his forte and, even though these were babies, she would feel a lot more comfortable with him there to make sure she was doing the right thing! At least it gave her time to further gain control of her breathing, drink some more water and start nibbling on one of the muffins she had been given by a house elf. |

As he approached the nursery, he slowed down his steps when he saw a hesitant figure waiting just by the door, giggling to himself at her antics. Was she afraid to face the infant creatures by herself? With slow and careful steps and lips pursed to hold back laughter, he walked behind her, and covered her eyes with his hands, hoping they weren't too cold, and praying that she wouldn't elbow him in the nose or anything of the sort - though it would be good to know she had fantastic defensive reflexes. He wouldn't mind it either way. |
Quote:
That realisation wasn't enough to slow her heart down, still racing from the shock of having been there. She considered who it might be, but really, she only had one friend who loved magical creatures, and she was waiting for at this very location. "Daehyun," she greeted, before raising her free hand up to pull his hands away from her face. Giggling as she turned around to face him. She wondered if he could hear how heavily she was still breathing after his little scare. Maybe she should have just been more alert, but then again, she hadn't assumed she would need to be. And at least she had saved her muffin from an unglorious end of meeting the floor. Speaking of which, she passed the now dry robe along with another blueberry muffin to the boy in front of her. "I got an older student to help me with a drying charm... and then I was hungry so I ran by the kitchens and got some extra snacks." Shera deserved them. Especially after the young Ravenclaw had attempted |
Quote:
Accepting the robe with a thankful nod, he draped it over his uniform, and stared hesitantly at the muffin she'd offered him as he opened the door to the nursery and waited for her to walk in first. "You sure you don't want the extra? Or at least split it in half?" Did he deserve treats? After all the embarrassing things he'd said, and even scared her so bad that she was breathing hard? Plus, if she liked sweets, he would gladly sacrifice the urge to have some. His lips stretched into a small smile as he heard soft, familiar cries coming from inside the nursery. She was going to love the small birds that he'd told her about mere minutes earlier - or at least he hoped she would. |
Quote:
She gave him a serious look for a moment, before raising an eyebrow in amusement. "It's as though you think that I don't have more snacks in my bag. Besides, I offered it to you, of course I'm sure that I'm fine with you having it." Because seriously, she would not offer if she thought she didn't have enough to make her feel full again. "So, have you got anything planned for my first venture into the world of creatures?" she asked dramatically, grinning at him and still waiting for him to take the lead with this whole visiting the nursery and caring for baby creatures thing. |
Quote:
At her statement, he couldn't help but laugh as they walked inside and he made sure to close the door in case one of the babies wanted to escape. He'd wanted to say he liked her way of thinking, but his unfiltered brain had almost blurted out I like you instead, so he was glad he'd realized in time what that statement would've sounded like. So instead he grinned, and accepted the muffin with a nod. "Thank you," he said, taking a large bite out of it. Yummmmm. "Mmm," he hummed in response to her question, walking further into the nursery with a grin on his face. "Come here," he beckoned her to join him next to the cage he'd immediately spotted, in which two wailing birds were cradled on a perch next to one another, like two balls of a mixture of greenish-black fuzz and small feathers that had yet to develop fully. People would always say birds were ugly before all their feathers grew, but he found them adorable. "Want to make a guess at what they are?" |
Quote:
"Ummm... I'd say he's usually charming and lovely, but he has... a lot of energy?" was that a good way of putting it? Because she did love him dearly and did think the world of him, but if people thought Shera was energetic they hadn't seen anything yet. "Let's just say that an intense Quidditch game with my cousins is less exhausting than running around with him for a few hours. Your only chance at getting him to sit still is reading a book to him." She still smiled widely at the thought. Especially because he was still in that age where everything seemed so magical to him Shera padded after Daehyun without a thought, feeling a lot more comfortable and secure around things she had no clue about because he obviously did know about them. They'd stopped in front of the wailing birds and Shera couldn't help but coo at how cute they were. "Aren't you two the cutest little things," she told them quietly, beaming at them. Any guesses? "Um.... birds?..." she had no clue what she was talking about, but they were still really pretty and she was going to enjoy looking at them anyway. If she was slightly more self conscious she would've probably gotten flustered. Instead, she just went back to staring at the birds in question in awe, the only thing crossing her mind being how pretty they were. |
Quote:
He immediately broke into a large smile at Shera's coos, delighted that she hadn't been put off by the soon-to-be gorgeous birds. He liked to think of the weird phase in which they started replacing fuzz with feathers - which were mostly spikes ready to open into greenish-black feathers - as their adolescent days. Like bird puberty. Pursing his lips to contain the laughter as to not disturb the infants, he slowly opened the small door of the cage, sticking his hand in, one millimeter at a time, watching the hesitant birds as they observed him curiously. "Come on," he said, still focused on the pair. "I've told you about them just before coming here." He also hoped Shera wouldn't freak out when he took them out, because he knew many would be comfortable with a set of bars in between them and various creatures, but he was going to cuddle that pair till they stopped wailing. But first he needed to earn their trust, and prepare himself to be bitten. |
Quote:
And that was why they waited so long to have another child. What had they spoken about earlier? Threstrals, salamanders, winged horses... there were so many creatures that they had spoken about! But she needed to think specifically about any birds that they were speaking about. It was a wail of the baby that finally made her think of the birds that Daehyun said she would be good for, smiling brightly at the boy the moment she realised what it was. "Augureys!" With her thinking complete, she let herself observe what the Gryffindor was doing. It was interesting to watch the birds also observe him, and Shera just relaxed herself knowing that Daehyun knew what he was doing. |
Quote:
... somehow. He'll figure it out when the time came. "Good!" he said happily when Shera figured out what the birds actually were. His hand had gotten within reach of the two small Augureys and, sure enough, one of them had reached closer to his fingers to attack, though he was unbothered by it all. Softly holding one of them in his hand and shielding it with the other so it wouldn't fall, he cooed at the small creature, despite its attempts of nibbling on his finger. "Now, don't bite me," he told the Augurey with a smile, before proceeding to rub the side of the bird's neck in the lightest of touches, his smile widening when it leaned happily into his touch. "There we go," he muttered to the bird who had just become his friend. "Tip," he said, turning to Shera. "Dogs aren't the only ones who like their neck scratched." His owls were particularly fond of that. "Do you want to hold this one? Might bite, but it's really just a nibble. It won't hurt you." Though if she was afraid, she shouldn't, to avoid dropping the baby. |
Quote:
Although... she was hoping he wouldn't literally do that. Shera ended up cooing as the baby went to bite Daehyun, and continued nibbling him as he pulled it out of the cage. It was such a cute baby! And she couldn't hold back the giggle when the boy had pat its neck and it had just immediately gone to nuzzle further into the pat. Slowly and carefully she reached out while Daehyun was still holding the baby She needed a moment. Taking a step back, to avoid scaring the baby, Shera grinned at Daehyun and bounced on her toes a little bit to contain her excitement. "Ok, I'm ready," she announced, managing to stop herself from shifting as much in her excitement. She slowly moved her hand underneath Daehyun's so that she would be ready for him to let go of the birdie and slipping her other hand on the side between Daehyun's and the baby. She couldn't help the next coo that slipped out, "Aren't you the prettiest little thing? What a nice baby." She was so ready to hold this baby bird, noting that it already gone to bite her and the Gryffindor was right. It didn't hurt. If anything it just made her feel like she wanted to giggle. |
Quote:
Daehyun shook his head, laughing. "Dork," he said, though in an endearing tone. "I'll just deal with your energy. Maybe it'll rub off on me one day." Which wouldn't be a bad thing at all, he thought. Or maybe they could balance each other out. He needed to purse his lips to contain the laughter at Shera's excitement, as the girl had actually taken a step back to bounce, as if shaking off all the excitement before holding the small Augurey, to avoid scaring it. Once safely in her hands, he turned to hold the other in his hands, this one quieter, and didn't nibble on his fingers either. Cradling the baby bird in the palms of his hands, he let out a soft "You think they have some treats here?" he asked, already taking off towards the shelves he'd spotted on his way in. |
Quote:
Maybe her energy would rub off on him? She fought hard to stifle the giggle that threatened to arise at the thought of him practically bouncing off the walls and approaching people with an extremely bubbly attitude. It didn't quite suit him, even if it led to an amusing mental image. "Or maybe you'll rub off on me," she commented lightly, though that was equally absurd. Shera also almost blushed at the memory of their recent discussion about how he actually liked her personality a lot. It would be a shame to lose one of the things that her friend liked. But that wasn't in much danger as far as she could tell. She definitely let out a giggle at the boy's squeal. But she could 100% relate to how he was feeling. The babies were making her feel giddy. Especially because they were so small and helpless and pretty and deserved aaaaaaaaallllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll the cuddles in the world. And then some. "They're meant to foresee death?" she asked, not really remembering this from the conversation that they had had earlier. She could remember Daehyun saying something about the birds wailing and crying before rain, and her personality balancing them out but that was all. "Even if you could that is acceptable because you're such sweet babies, aren't you?" her cooing might have been undercut by the fact that the baby was trying to nibble one of her fingers off. But that was clearly irrelevant. "I'd be surprised if they didn't have any kind of treats here for them..." Shera commented as she slowly followed behind Daehyun. Because she really didn't want to scare the baby that she was holding. "You know, it was a really good idea to come here," she commented brightly, beaming at Daehyun. The baby bird was now nibbling and tugging the still wet curls. Which probably made for a funny sight. |
SPOILER!!: Shera <3 Did she just stick her tongue out at him? Shaking his head, Daehyun let out a laugh at her comment. "I doubt that will happen anytime soon." She had way too much energy for him to rub off on her and, besides, he liked her that way, and liked that she was a polar opposite to him "No," he answered her question with a head shake. "It was just a myth, but many people still believe it and avoid them. You know what happened to Ulric the Oddball?" Though he still couldn't understand why people avoided them, even if they did foresee death. It wasn't as though they caused it, so wouldn't they be grateful to have a warning and be more cautious? As he searched through the things scattered on the shelves, he couldn't help but smile when Shera had told him it had been a good idea to come there. "I'm glad you like it," and I'm glad you're not one of those squealing girls who wouldn't touch anything, he hoped his words would convey. As he found a jar filled with dried insects, he turned to Shera. "I found-" but his words were soon cut off at the sight of the Augurey chewing on her curls. "Umm-your hair-" Did she notice? Would she freak out then? |
Quote:
Cause she ate a lot of those. Of course, she was also low-key terrified that if she ever did anything worthwhile as a Quidditch player she may one day be remembered as unfavourably as Uric the Oddball. It would probably be a joke that she did that would haunt her into an afterlife as a ghost in Hogwarts. She could only smile at the boy commented he was glad she was enjoying being in the nursery, but when he had brought up her hair she laughed. "I can feel it," she commented lightly, not bothered by the fact that the baby was messing with it "Although I'm starting to think that this little one is very hungry," Shera added. It would explain all the nibbles. And at least Daehyun had found the snacks for them so they could give them some more food. |
Quote:
Absently petting the small Augurey, Daehyun winced when she'd told him about the interest babies showed in her hair, wondering if she was talking about human babies. Because if she was, he couldn't really imagine what she was going through. "Tie it back, maybe, for safety purposes?" he asked, though he liked the curled mess that was her hair At her final statement, he held the Augurey in one hand, close to his chest to shield it and keep it from falling, holding the jar of insects up in the other hand. Uncaring that his robe might get dirty in the process, he sat cross-legged on the floor right there, the bird in his lap, and opened the jar for Shera to grab some. He silently looked at her and waited for a reaction, unsure of what to say - whether she minded touching the insects or not, since he'd seen some gloves on the same shelves, but at the same time didn't want to insult her for offering. So far she'd proven she was different from everything he'd expected her to be, which was why he'd decided to stay silent. ... and didn't notice the little rascal on his lap that had spotted the treats, slowly inching forward towards the jar. |
Quote:
That was usually a pretty good indicator that you were not, in fact a ghost. "If I ever find my hair ties again I will," she commented lightly, though turned her eyes to smile down at the Augurey that was still tugging her hair. Conveniently for her, Daehyun had the snacks ready to go. She lightly giggled as the Augurey on his lap moved towards the glass he was holding. "I think your one also is feeling pretty hungry!" Still, now focussed on feeding the baby that was in her hands she walked over to where Daehyun was, dropping down into a cross-legged position herself as she reached over to pull one of the dried insects out of the jar. Holding it near the baby in question, it had finally noticed and left her hair alone, now moving towards the insect in Shera's hand. Smiling softly she assisted by bringing it closer to the Augurey, cooing as it ate the little insect from her hand. |
Quote:
His was hungry, as well? It had taken him a moment to realize what Shera was saying, but eventually he looked down and saw the small Augurey reach its neck out towards the jar of insects, its fuzzy wings flapping helplessly on the sides for balance. "Are you, now?" he asked the bird. Giggling, he took a couple of dried insects out and held them in his palm for the hungry bird to take and, sure enough, they were gone a few moments later. As Shera joined him on the floor, he grinned at the sight of her cooing at the Augurey she was feeding. "See, you've already cheered up an Augurey." Point proven that she was good for the wailing birds. "I wonder if we can adopt them..." He would adopt every being in that nursery and nearby barn that didn't have an owner, but that was beside the point. |
Quote:
The bird in Daehyun's hands was flapping about cutely, and Shera couldn't help but smile at the sight. Though, she situation wasn't much different with her holding and feeding the other baby Augurey. One insect down, and it wasn't already nuzzling and nibbling her fingers in it's search for more food. "Alright, alright, I'll get you more," she assured the baby bird, pulling a few more dried insects out of the jar and offering it to the augurey. It didn't take it very long to consume all of them, though it seemed somewhat satisfied and took to nuzzling instead of nibbling her. She couldn't help but laugh and shrug at what Daehyun had said about her cheering up an Augurey. "I just fed it, I don't think that really counts," because it really shouldn't. Anyone could feed an Augurey. Now adopting them? That was something that she could get behind. "We could ask Professor Wayland? I'm sure there'd be some way to do it, and if I send an owl to my dad he'd definitely organise it..." that in mind, she contemplated just sending an owl to her father anyway. She was sure that he would agree with the request. Knowing the man, he'd buy her hundreds of Augurey's if it made her happy... |
Quote:
When Shera mentioned professor Wayland, he nodded. "Yep, we should ask!" He imagined the man would soon be tired of him pestering about one thing or another, but it wasn't as though he could help it when it came to any being that he encountered. "Would you really like to adopt one?" he asked, pleasantly surprised that she wouldn't mind the constant saddening cries, since they weren't the most common among pets due to that reason. Cuddling the now sated bird close to him, Daehyun said, "We should go see the winged horses, too!" That is, if she managed to part ways with the baby Augurey she was cuddling - a minute longer, and he would be taking his to the Gryffindor tower with him. |
Quote:
It was his urging to go see the winged horses that made her sigh lightly, stroking the Augurey's neck and smiling as it leaned into her again. "We can do that," she responded, though she still needed to figure out how to tear herself away from the baby bird first. A few more moments of cuddling, and then she'd managed to force herself to her feet and carefully returned the Augery to it's cage before using her hands to brush off the dirt from her jeans. "Winged horses, here we come," she announced energetically, though Shera still turned to Daehyun, waiting for him to take the lead with them. |
Quote:
When she'd announced that they'd be visiting the winged horses, Daehyun crossed the barn and exited through the back door, holding it open for Shera to follow. "Here they are!" he said excitedly as he turned to Shera with a large grin on his face. Just outside the barn were the stables, out of which the heads of two curious winged horses poked out. He walked to the grey one he'd recognized as a Granian and patted its head, the baby instantly leaning into his touch with a soft neigh. "I'm not sure if we're allowed to let them out, though," he said, looking at the nearby pens that were likely meant to let the creatures out and play. Thought for winged horses, the pens wouldn't restrain them in any way if they were already able to fly. Which he wouldn't want to test. |
Quote:
They really were too cute. Thankfully, distraction came in the form of a beautiful winged horse baby. A very large baby, especially compared to the birds, but a baby nonetheless. Shera cooed at it, her own hands moving towards it. She giggled as the baby carefully moved its nose over her hands, before looking away with disinterest. That was when she allowed herself to move forward and pat it. Like the birds it cutely leaned into her touch, and it took a few seconds of pats before it shifted on it's legs. "You look like an excited baby," she cooed, smiling as it finally got itself under control realising it had moved away from her, and approached her for more pats. "Uuuuummmm.... I don't know either... do you know when they start flying?" |
