Winter was still upon them, even in February. At least it wasn't as cold as it had been. It was back to being around the 40's at least. Tristan made sure to have the heating charms around the area outside of the barns where he held his lessons. It was quite chilly, but the heating charms would keep them all nice and warm.
As usual there were hay bales set up in a semi-circle, waiting for his students to arrive. They were set up next to a very large empty field just to the right of the barns. Professor Wayland had gone above and beyond for his hay bale throne today. The seat was normal sized, but the back was shaped like a Phoenix in flight, and colored to look like one too. He thought his students needed a little fun after all of the craziness going on with the mutant running around eating things....
So there he sat in his Phoenix hay bale throne, sipping his Chai and waiting patiently for his students to arrive.

One word was REALLY hard for Emma. Like, who only had the one word? She had SO MANY. But after chewing her lip a little, she managed to just say the one word and nothing else. "Beard!"

What was that thing?! Indigo had never seen or even heard of... one of those before? What had Professor Wayland called it? A leucrotta? And now there were several of them standing in front of him. Indigo just watched for a moment, trying to understand for himself what exactly they were so he could come up with a word to describe them. Someone said moose, and honestly that was what they looked like. Except they had a lot of hair, yes kind of like a beard, and huge mouths that kind of reminded him of a pelican. He almost used the word pelican as his answer but decided against it. There had to be something better and less ridiculous. Eventually he said "Antlers." Those things looked sharp.
Stella gasped, they were huge and big and also looked a bit terrifying. Look at those antlers they looked sharp and big! Yeah... she wouldn't want to make this creature mad, who knew what would happen. Were these like regular mooses or a bit more dangerous? I guess she was going to find that out today.
Raising her hand her eyes wide in amazement and a bit of fear, she looked at the creature and back at Professor Wayland. " HUGE Professor, it's huge!" she said looking at the creature. She didn't know whether to be memorized by it or frightened, it was a close draw between both of them really. She knew that some creatures looked terrifying but were the nicest creatures you can very imagine, she had a good feeling it was the same with these.

Taddy was getting cozy in the heat while others added in their thoughts on the differences with Hyenas, Lions, and Mooses. He knew some things about them, wasn't the Lion the symbol of Gryffindor for one? And the Hyenas were always laughing in that Lion King movie his parents would let him watch with his siblings back at home. And the Mooses were some mascot for a Canadian Quidditch team. He knew stuff, but was fighting the urge to sleeeep in this comfy setting.
What kept him up though? The Leucrottas coming in. "WHOA!" He definitely was not sleeping here. First was how huge their beard was and their mouth. He contributed to the question. "They have big mouths.. literally." That was obvious, of course. But he wondered what uses they had them for other than eating.

Chloe was really trying to listen, but it was hard when her friend was so furry and she went from worried to wanting to pet her like she did her cat. She only barely heard the professor speaking again and she turned her head to try and focus more.
What were they learning today?
Looking at the herd that just come around she studied them for a few minutes, "bearded" She had other words too, but he only wanted one so she tried to stay with just what he wanted.

Blink, blink. WHAT WAS THAT?!
Tina's dark eyes went as wide as saucers as a herd of big hairy creatures she'd never seen before came into view.
For a minute, the only thing she could do was stare at the beasts, unsure whether to be intrigued or afraid. Their beards and huge mouths were kind of funny-looking, but sue did not like the look of those antlers! What of one of the creatures spooked and got a little... poky? Yeah, she didn't want to lose an eye today, thank you very much!
As she continued to study the creature, she began to draw compaeisons between it and the three creatures the professor named. The antlers obviously resembled a moose. The beard somewhat resembled a lion's mane, and from her vantage point, the beast's facial structure looked a lot like that of a hyena. Suddenly she had a strong suspicion why Professor Wayland had mentioned those three specific creatures. Was she right? Was this mystery animal a cross of a lion, hyena, and moose?
Oh, so the mystery animal was a leucrotta... and the professor wanted them to describe it in one word. Wow!
That was going to be hard! Tina was used to showing off with longwinded answers. How was she supposed to give a thorough answer with only one word? She thought for a minute. The first word that popped into her mind was hodgepodge because the creature looked like a mash-up of several different animals, but that answer sounded too out there without an explanation to accompany it. The professor's instructions were "one word' not "one word and am explanation of how it applies", so she picked a safer option. "Furry," she said after raising her hand.

Patrick was not thrilled that he would have to hang around with the patches of fur that he had recently acquired. He was hating this school right about now. He kept quiet as he listened to the first question. He would have said that lions were fierce and that the male lion typically protected the rest of the herd but he didn’t want to draw any more attention to himself than he had to.
As he sat and listened to other peoples answers he nodded they were right. But what exactly was a Leucrotta? He had never seen a single one nor did he know anything about it but from his spot as far away as others he put his hand on his head like antlers so that way he could show he knew something. He was tired of the pink fur in his hair. The patches on his back. Like why what did he do to deserve this?

Oh, poor Patrick. It looked like he was beginning to grow fur as well and his was...pink? So strange. He was going to have to send all of the fur covered students to the healer at the end of the class. Whatever was going around was obviously contagious.
Tristan made his way back to the front of the group but closer to the blackboard. It was note time before they got to their activity! "Alright, very good descriptive words everyone! Now a little information about our fantastic creatures for today!" He paused to collect his thoughts.
"The Leucrotta, as you can see, looks like a rather large moose with sharp, pointy antlers, and when they open their mouths they are ridiculously large compared to their face and heads." He paused so everyone could catch up to the blackboard. "They have the hindquarters of a Stag, and the neck, tail, and chest of a lion. Their backs are not flexible at all which means they have to completely turn their body to look behind them.'
Pausing for a moment to let the students catch up in their notes, he continued. "Now there isn't very much information out there about this creature. But what we do know is that they are offspring of the Hyena and the Lion. They are omnivorous. They can mimic voices and any sound that they hear. Their teeth are not actually teeth, they are long sharp bone that can crush anything. It's also been said they are able to switch gender every year if they want to, but that hasn't been proven." And that was all for notes today!
"This heard lives in the Forbidden Forest and I check on them often, so they are used to human interaction. Though they eat plants and meat, they do not eat humans so you are completely and one hundred percent safe with these creatures." He wanted to make that perfectly clear so no one would be scared of them.
He moved towards the middle of the semi-circle. "Alright for your small activity, your task is to interact with and get to know your Leucrotta! See if you can get them to mimic you, feed them, give them a good brushing! There are supplies on that table over there," he pointed behind him and a table appeared with various hay, grass, green leaves, meats, and of course brushes.
"Hop to it!" Tristan said with a wink, moving out of the way so he didn't get trampled by excited students.

Hanna had wanted to give an answer to what she knew about Leucrottas but as they appeared, her mouth hung open and she was frozen in fear. Not in a way that was worrying, of course. She knew she was perfectly safe in Professor Wayland's presence.
BUT MERLIN THEY WERE HUGE!
Moose were huge, as were these. Yes, POINTY antlers. Good at poking you with. HUMONGOUS mouths. HUGE! The biggest Hanna had seen on something that wasn't a dragon. She hadn't known that about their backs and necks being inflexible. It would give their prey at least a little head start. In the time they had to spot the Leucrotta, perhaps they could run away before the Leucrotta spotted them. Being that it had to do a proper turn around, rather than just a head spin.
The fact that humans weren't part of their diet had relaxed Hanna slightly. She still didn't want to go near them, but at least if she did she knew she wouldn't be eaten.
But... she didn't want to go near them. Nope. She was safe where she was. But, she had to do something - right? Er... she smiled at one from where she was sitting. Safe on her hay. And waved to it. Maybe it would mimic her and offer her a smile. If it did that, maybe... maybe she'd go up to it and touch it.

Taddy got up from his seat when they were given the go ahead to interact. He found himself needing his hippogriff blanket again as he stepped away from the comfortable heating charms. He was glad to be prepared for this as he quickly unfolded his blanket to wrap around himself.
Okay, so he'd be lying if he didn't have some form of hesitation. They were pretty intimidating looking, but his experience around Hippogriffs back at home taught Taddy that it was a good thing to be hesitant on creatures. They didn't all react the same and had boundaries. Looking at the nearest Leucrotta, Tad gave it a grin. He didn't stare into its eyes for long in case it would take him as a challenge. "Hi.." Tentatively taking small steps closer to it.

As Nettie listened to him describe the Leucrotta, she just got...more and more confused. She had so many questions. FIRST of all - how did a lion and a hyena have a baby? And how did it end up looking like a MOOSE and not some sort of weird cat-dog looking creature? The hyena bit made a bit more sense when he said that their jaws could break anything. She was pretty sure she'd read that real hyenas could do that too. WHY did they mimic people? What purpose did that accomplish? Were they also somehow part parrot?
So many questions. She scribbled all the information Wayland rattled off on her parchment before pausing to do her messy bun again, as it had flopped down to her ears as she wrote. UGHHHHH.
She was sooo going to research these things later. She was still so intrigued, and SO confused.
Taking a chunk of meat in her hand, she walked up to the nearest Leucrotta and smiled softly at it. "Hey big fella. You hungry?" she asked, holding out the piece of meat in her hand with her palm open. She didn't think about how BIG their mouths were until JUST now...but it was too late, she already had it out in offering. Hopefully it didn't stretch it's mouth SUPER wide and engulf her WHOLE hand...a possibility she wished she had thought of before she did this...

Tristan watched as the students approached. Some where nervous, some hadn't budged yet. He couldn't blame them. The Leucrotta were very large and intimidating looking creatures. In truth...they were just big goof balls.
Tristan walked over to Hanna and sat next her on an empty hay bale. "Everything okay Hanna?" He could tell she was scared to go anywhere near the creatures. "Scared to approach?" He asked quietly with a gentle smile.
"You have about 20 minutes until we move on!" Tristan called out checking his watch.

Biting her lip Stella approach the creature her hands shaking a bit, it was huge and bit and a bit intimidating. Although she knew that alot of creatures look that way so people and other creatures wouldn't hurt them. Touching one of them cautiously, she petted it as it smelled her hand. "Hello there, aren't you a big strong boy!" she said petting him. "You hungry? Let's see what we got here." she said walking towards the table.
Looking at the table she bit her lip. Hm... what to give him, are they all the same or like different kinds of things? Raising her hand she looked at Professor Wayland. "Professor do they all like the same thing? Or do some rather eat meat then greens?" Stella asked him curiously. She didn't know, she knew that some animals might've been the same type of species but like different kinds of food. That wasn't a stupid question was it? She was just curious, everybody had their own taste right? Even creatures.

Indigo eyed the leucrotta a bit warily. Professor Wayland's assurance that the creatures wouldn't eat them didn't make him feel that much better. He couldn't help but wonder if he meant leucrotta in general didn't typically eat people, or if this bunch specifically knew not to. If he met one of these things in the wild should he fear for his life? These thoughts kept him in his seat for a few moments after they were told they could approach.
But he was curious too. These animals could mimic speech and sounds? That was...really cool, actually. And Indigo was immensely curious about how it worked. So he stood up and cautiously approached one of them. He grabbed a bit of hay and meat on the way in case it was hungry, and a brush in case he got to that. "Hello," he said softly. "Are you hungry?" He offered the meat and the hay, letting the leucrotta take its pick. As he did, he also whistled a little tune to see if the leucrotta would mimic him.

"Well, Stella, they are kind of like us. They get in moods of when they want specific things. You know how sometimes you just want a big ol' burger to chomp down on and other times you just might want a nice salad. Sometimes you want a little of both! They get the same way." He hoped that analogy made sense to her. "So if you grab a meat and a green and they go for one over the other or both...you can't go wrong." He said with a small smile and a wink.

Tristan nodded listening to Hanna's fears. He completely understood how she felt. Big animals could be really frightening, even the gentlest of giants. But this is what he was here for; to help them conquer their fears of creatures because fear is what cause extinction.
"Well, how about this." He paused, stood, and walked over to the table grabbing a little meat and a little hay, before walking back and sitting next to the young Ravenclaw. "How about we go up together? That way I am there if you get scared and you know for sure you will be safe. Does that sound like a plan?" He said with a gentle, encouraging smile. If he couldn't get her up for this part of the activity, he definitely wouldn't be able to get her to do the next part of the activity.
Tristan quickly looked at his watch. "You have about 10 minutes before we move on!" This should be fun!

THIS WAS SO EXCITING!
She couldn't wait to go and interact with one. They were so big and being that shew as under five foot they were even more huge! Though she felt super bad leaving older Chloe if she was going to stay where she was. She looked back and forth to the animal and her older friend. "Hey if you want to come join me over here maybe we could work together."
Getting up she moved over to one of the animals when she heard the conversation between Hannah and the professor, "Hannah if you want to join me, maybe we could work together. I asked older Chloe to come over too." Having the head girl with them might help her fear too, though Professor Wayland did say he would go with Hannah so she might want that as well.
Walking towards one of the creature she picked up a brush, "Can I brush you?"

Nettie watched as the Leucrotta took the meat from her hands gently, almost as if it KNEW that she was an innocent little girl and he shouldn't scare her by opening his mouth so wide. At least, that was what she liked to think he was doing. Or she? Not sure. She smiled and began to pet his muzzle as he chewed on the piece of meat.
A nagging question made her raise her hand. "Professor, if they're the offspring of hyenas and lions, why did they turn out looking like...this?" she asked.

Nodding and smiling she looked up at Professor Wayland. "Thanks Professor, that helped me greatly!" she said taking some meat and some hay. Walking back towards the Leucrotta she held her hand out which had the hay in it as he ate it. "Woah.... you must be hungry boy!" she said giggling and petting it. "What about some nice tasty meat to finish the meal off right?" she asked giving it some meat. Seeing it eat it she smiled happily. "How about we get you all brushed up ok?" she asked him petting him.
Walking back to the supply table she grabbed a brushed and smiled. Gently and carefully she started brushing the Leucrotta's bearded mane like coat. Humming softly to herself she kept brushing away gently and carefully. As the Leucrotta nuzzled against her she giggled. "Aw... you're just a big lovable good boy aren't you?" she asked petting it feeding it some hay she had left over.

With the verification that Ash had at least most likely been the model for Professor Wayland’s hay bale throne, along with the opening questions to the class, Stasya had dropped silent for once in her long CoMC student career. Instead of answering, she’d silently been trying to figure out what they were going to actually be studying. Odds were they weren’t studying hyenas, moose or lions, nor did she think they’d be studying the furry Head Girl or the several others who were suspiciously fuzzy.
Nor could she sum up a Leucrotta in just one word. Majestic, maybe, in a goofy way, but she was more of a ‘saying everything she knew about a creature when asked’ girl. Plus, she was tempted to try and ask the Leucrotta if it knew the unicorns that she still hadn’t managed to check on after the brief glimpse back in first year when she swore she’d gotten them to trust her. The instruction to befriend one of the Leucrotta herd seemed a positive note, and she’d made a beeline for the food on the table, collecting a bit of hay and some meat that she smushed together as she walked over to slowly approach one of the unclaimed Leucrotta.
“Hi there. You’re a beautiful creature, aren’t you?,” she said softly, holding the mixture of foods out in one hand as she waited for the creature to approach her the final few steps. Whether or not the others agreed, she was standing by what she said. Besides, maybe the Leucrotta didn’t think it looked goofy. Maybe it thought they looked odd, so she was going to stick with her compliment.
Besides, it had seemed to work, as the creature had approached her outstretched hand to nibble at the meat/hay mixture she’d created before nuzzling her hand a little. “You like compliments too, don’t you?,” she continued, stroking the Leucrotta’s nose gently. She hadn’t found a creature who didn’t, yet.

Hanna watched Professor Wayland get the meat and some hay. Together, he said? Hanna chewed on the inside of her lip and nodded. "Okay," another nod. She could do that with him. "It's a plan." With that, she stood up and headed slowly towards the creature.

Walking towards one of the creature she picked up a brush, "Can I brush you?"
And once she was there, more encouragement came. From younger Chloe, but potentially older Chloe too. Hanna gave her a nervous smile with another nod. "Together, yeah." Yeah. Together. "Thanks!" She watched as Chloe went towards it with a brush. Gulp.
"P-Profesor... I'm ready for the meat," she said. "Or should I start with the hay?" Would the creature get a bit too nibbly with the meat?

Tina's eyes darted from the professor to the leucrotta. The more she heard about the creature, the more confused and scared she felt. Sharp, pointy antlers? Teeth-like bones that could crush anything? Nope, nope, nope! She didn't want to go anywhere near that animal! The fact that the professor said it didn't eat humans did little to ease her mind. Even if the leucrotta didn't make a snack out of her, it could still bite crush her hand. It could still gouge her with its antlers, and judging by its sheer size, it looked like it could trample her if it wanted. Sorry, leucrotta. Sorry, Professor, but she really didn't want to spend the rest of the term in the hospital wing! Now was not a good time for that. She had quidditch; she had OWLs coming up, not to mention other classes. How could she earn points in lessons if she was confined to a hospital bed?
Tina blinked dumbly at Professor Wayland's instructions. They were going to feed them?! How were they supposed to do that? Toss the food into their mouths? Levitate it up to them? Surely he didn't mean they had to hand feed them, right? Just look at the size of their mouths! They would probably take someone's hand off while trying to get the food! Nononononononono…
Tina was really starting to panic, but she kept her head down, trying to hide it. She didn't want all these people to see her vulnerable! If she showed fear, there were some cruel people who would take advantage of her moment of weakness and kick her while she was down… she'd experienced that firsthand. She pretended to look over her notes to distract herself from her fears (and to stall as long as she could before facing the leucrotta). It was only when she did that she realized how nonsensical the mechanics of this creature sounded! How did a lion and a hyena produce an animal with antlers? How was it able to mimic people? And if it was true that it could change genders, how was that possible? Was it also part clownfish or something?
Deciding she could no longer put off the inevitable, Tina got up and took a few cautious steps toward one of the smaller leucrottas. As afraid as she was of the animal, she was more afraid of getting into trouble for lack of participation - and that was really saying something! Now what would be the best way to approach the task? Probably try to earn the leucrotta's trust by giving it some food. But what would it like to eat? Tina decided to grab some of everything and let it take its pick.
Food in hand, she slowly approached the creature. “Hey,” she said softly. “Would you like a snack?” She offered the assortment of food in her left hand, holding her right as far behind her back as she could. At least this way if it thought her hand was part of the meal, she'd still have one good hand! She willed herself not to flinch as it came closer. Please don't bite me, please don't bite me… she thought frantically.
When she dared to look, Tina saw the leucrotta munching contentedly on the meat and greens in her hand, and she began to relax a little. So far so good… maybe this would go okay after all. At least her hand had survived the feeding! So what was she supposed to do now, pet it? She knew some creatures got very aggressive if you pet them while they were eating, and she wasn't about to take any chances. Only after the leucrotta finished the last of its snack did Tina reach up to gingerly pat its nose. “Nice leucrotta. Good boy… girl… creature.” Yeah, let's go with that, since she had no idea if it was a male or female.
The leucrotta nuzzled against Tina's hand, clearly enjoying the petting. She kept petting it for a couple more minutes to give it time to get used to her before picking up a brush. “Will you let me brush you now?” she asked. It didn't react, so she'd take that as a yes. She gently moved the brush through its fur, starting in front where it could see her. Hmm… this was going well. Maybe she could get it to mimic her soon. She smiled as a thought occurred to her. What if she could get it to repeat something in French? That would be amazing!

Patrick watched as some of the other students began to feed the little creatures. He was a bit unsure of participating in the activity as he was afraid someone would notice his pink patches of fur. Deciding that he'd rather not get in trouble for standing behind the haybale he moved forward to feed the little creature.
Grabbing some hay off the table he walked closer, slowly. Putting his hand up with the hay he waited for it to take it, "You're a cute little guy aren't you?" he said as he watched the hay disappear from his hand.

"Aren't they beautiful Hannah" Smiling at her older friend she hoped the girl wasn't too nervous. The brush going through the creatures fur really easy she knew they were of course well taken care of. Professor Wayland was the best with animals and she was so glad that he was working with these.
"How do you end up with so many different varieties of creatures professor?" Did the school purchase all of them or were some of these his personal group of pets. SHe looked at Hannah again hoping she was enjoying herself. How could you not with such amazing things in front of you.
"You are so good, what a good boy." Her voice carried as she continued to brush.
