Default CoMC Lesson 1: Gone Batty!

It was a nice and cool October evening, but not cold enough to need a sweater yet. There was a soft glow of light in the sky and the sun had just dipped below the horizon; it was officially twilight. Tristan usually set up his lessons in front of the barn, but this one was set a little further into the forest than usual, but not too far. He had set up in a little clearing just outside of a cave. Nothing that would cause them harm lived here, but he knew a cave may be a little scary for some students.

As usual, there was a semi-circle of hay bales set out for the students, and his trusty blackboard was just to the right of the cave entrance. There was no evidence of what kind of creature they would be working with today. He liked keeping them surprised! To the left of the cave there was a large Adirondack Chair made out of hay bales, and that was where Professor Wayland could be found; sipping his Chai Tea from a mug shaped like a Niffler, waiting patiently for his students to arrive.

OOC: Welcome to the first CoMC Lesson of the term! Though this is our first lesson together, this is not the first CoMC lesson of the year, so please keep that in mind! Please make sure you take a gander at the CoMC Rules while waiting. Class will start in 24 hours. Class has begun please jump in!

So, use the fruit or you'll be sent to sit on the hay bales the rest of class." He looked at both Zoryn and Nathan for this. He was pretty sure it was a mutual idea. Zoryn was typically pretty good about following tasks steps...usually....Sometimes....When she wanted to....he sighed internally before giving them a warning look and walking away.

Then the professor suddenly issued them a warning for not following his instructions. Guess he missed the part of not making loud noises. Sorry, Zor. For a brief second, he thought about sitting out on the hay. It wasn't all too bad. Better there than in here...

Nathan looked at Zoryn and shrugged. "That didn't work, we have to find another way."

He didn't want to feed them with his hand or have them poop on his shoulders or something. Oh...a brilliant idea came into his mind! He cut the peach into pieces and scatter them onto the tree limbs.

A moment later, two bats came swooping in and hung themselves on the tree limbs. He grinned when they started licking the fruit by themselves.

"Oops?" she offered an innocent shrug to her Professor, looking back at her older partner and trying to stifle a giggle. It was kinda funny, no? Anyway, his offer of kicking them out of the cave sounded kind of awesome because it meant that they wouldn't have to do any work for the rest of the lesson.... Only, sitting on the hay sounded super boring and Zoryn honestly preferred to be hanging around with the bats even if it meant having to do more work. It was all that theory stuff that she didn't care about. But when a lesson was engaging and FUN, Zor was all about it, ja feel?

The Gryffindor waited for Professor WayOld to walk away before turning to hear Nathan out. "Totally," she agreed. And while he was doing something or another, Zoryn grabbed another peach from the basket and cut a small chunk of it off with her wand and a precise "diffindo!"

She held it out at arms length, playing the waiting game now. 'Cause honestly, Zoryn didn't mind feeding bats with her hands. "How come you're so scared of 'em?" Okay so she wasn't exactly sure if that's why Nathan was sort of being a baby about the whole thing, but it was her best guess.

But once she was behind him and took in the sight of the bats all around she was equally in awe and uncertain of what to say. So instead, she just took the offered peach half that Daehyun offered her assuming that that was answer enough to the question of being partners.

She held a hand out and waited, smiling as a bat came over and landed on her hand to grab the fruit she was offering. She couldn't help but turn to Daehyun, beaming at him as she tried her hardest to keep all the excess energy under control so she wouldn't scare it. She knew that even without words he'd probably understand the ridiculously overwhelming emotions running through her.

He had after all seen the impact that the Augureys had on her....
Meeting Shera's eyes as a bat landed on her, Daehyun immediately saw that she was having just as much fun as he was. "Adorable, aren't they?" he asked, glancing at the bat that had hung off his sleeve who'd just taken off to return to its previous resting spot.

Could he keep one, pleeeeaaase?

With an idea in mind, he muttered a soft "Nox," to extinguish the light at the end of his wand, and pulled the sleeves of his sweater up to his elbows, before grabbing a mango and cutting it up with the spell that he'd practiced after the failure in Potions. Tucking his wand in the back pocket of his jeans, he held pieces of mango out in both hands, following professor Wayland's example and squeezing lightly, uncaring that his hands were soon covered in sticky mango juice. He caught the eye of a bat that soon flew to him and, soon enough, another dropped on his other hand to feast on the fresh mango. He couldn't help but giggle when their noses tickled the palms of his hands.

Well the apple had worked well the first time, and he still had some slices left, so he decided to just keep on keeping on. If it isn't broken, you shouldn't fix it. One eye on Junia, he once more held out his hand in front of him. Calm, still, and quiet. Was this a bit unnerving? Absolutely. But the logical side of his head prevailed in true Ravenclaw fashion. It was more likely that he would hurt the bats rather than the other way around.

These thoughts swirled through his head as he stood silently, just waiting. He stared up at the first bat that had taken his food and watched it munch away happily. Or at least it looked happy to Finn, who in actuality had no idea how to read bat expressions. Maybe he would ask Wayland later if he knew what the body language of a happy bat--

"Oh!" he said, startled. Finn clapped his free hand over his mouth, willing himself not to make more noise. To be fair, having a bat swoop down on your hand in the semi-darkness of a wandlit cave was startling.

He glanced toward Junia. Was she having any luck?

Junia was thankful for Finn, his company helping to stop all the worrying over Abey she was doing. Long enough, at least, to focus on their current task. As she reached for the apple he offered, the sixth year let out a soft gasp as a bat swooped down and beat her to it. She managed a smile and a soft, "sounds good," accepting the additional fruit he had cut. If he had more already, who was she to object to taking it? "Thanks." It was appreciated, did he know?

Standing quite still, palm outstretched, Junia waited quietly as she watched the dark shadows swooping overhead. It was a bit eerie, knowing there were creatures above but not really being able to see what they were doing. It's why she felt herself jump when a tiny bat perched on her hand and snatched the fruit. It was only a moment before it flew off again, hanging from the levitating branch. "Well, at least one of us is comfortable," She mumbled.

Selecting another piece of fruit, the sixth year carefully broke it up into pieces and stepped closer to the Ravenclaw again. "Here, take some of this" He'd shared with her, after all.

How did they do it? Night had been at this for a good ten minutes and she hadn't attracted a single one. She had tried with every fruit except for mangoes, which had made her throw up once and so she wasn't very keen on them now.

All around her, people were gathering bats, but she just wasn't getting any. And it wasn't like she wasn't good with animals, on the contrary, she volunteered at the neighborhood shelter back in Chicago, and she got along wonderfully with the hamsters in the Hufflepuff rodent immersion room.

Everyone was being so quiet, but working together, and Night just felt so alone. "Can anyone help me with technique?" she asked quietly around the cave, because they had been told to be quiet, but honestly, she just wanted not to feel invisible.

Unfortunately, she hadn't seen the man coming until he was leaned against the wall next to her.

....

.......

When he put it like that, it sounded almost silly; nonsensical; childish; pathetic. She took a deep breath. "I'm not afraid of caves." It was barely audible unless he was really listening. Try as she might, there was nothing she could do about the hollow way in which her voice carried. The idea of a cave wasn't scary. Talking about caves didn't scare her. Activities in caves didn't scare her. It was the enclosed space............which...caves were--but it wasn't the cave itself that scared her.

"I just...don't like closed spaces, is all." She tried, attempting a more casual tone. Especially ones with only one exit. Just the thought was enough to make chest contract in uncomfortable ways. Why did he think she never visited him INSIDE his hut? Always outside on the bench. Always. Same with every other Professor's office save Hirsch's that time and frequency had left her desensitized enough so that sometimes she even closed the door behind her. Not wanting to turn this into a whole issue, the Ravenclaw forced on a smile. "I'm fine, really. Everything's fine. I just thought I'd stay out here is all and anyway it's so crowded in there. Nothing to worry about." He could go back into the cave and leave her be. Nothing to see here, just a girl with some fruit.
Tristan listened as she explained what the problem was. Closed in spaces; very interesting. For a young woman so incredible smart and talented, it surprised him that she would have a fear of something as simple as closed in spaces.

But he didn't want to force her to come inside if she wasn't comfortable. He had an idea that might give her the opportunity to interact with the bats...though it may not be during this lesson. "Well, you can keep helping your friends by cutting fruit for them. How about when I go decorate the Great Hall with the bats we collect, you help me. That way you get to interact with the bats without having to be in the cave." He was sure she would bite at that opportunity.

Tristan rolled his eyes at Zoryn's 'Oops.' If they had paid attention to his demonstration they wouldn't be scaring the dickens out of the bats right now. "Just keep your voices down and get to work you two." He said from beside his bat friend. He was going to have to watch them like a hawk.

That being said, Tristan spoke in a normal tone, just as he had before, knowing the entire class would hear him. "You have about 15 minutes everyone." He fed his friend another sliver of mango, and rubbed the bats belly as he ate.

He smiled at her. She seemed a bit out of sorts, whether because she was preoccupied with the fear factor or something else. "Nothing to be afraid of, right?" he said quietly. He guessed he'd hit the nail on the head when she made a comment about being comfortable.

Though it was dark, he sensed her right there, closer than before. "Oh, thanks," he said, barely audible. Finn couldn't even tell what kind of fruit she had handed him, but he could tell it wasn't an apple. Hopefully this would work just as well as the apple had, if not better.

Holding out his hands once more, he concentrated on not moving a muscle. Automatically it became literally impossible to stand still, as he felt all sort of urges to twitch and stretch. And the waiting was even worse because he knew that he was probably about to be surprised by something touching him.

To his even greater surprise, two bats must have had the same idea at the same time. "Whatever you gave me is perfect, Junia. They're fighting over it!" Well, maybe not fighting, but the bigger one was certainly flapping more and ended up with it. "Poor little guy! Have another, bud... Er... actually take Junia's, I'm fresh out." Because that bat could totally understand what he was saying.

A bat was quick to swoop down to the offered fruit, and Bel had turned her arm just so to make it easier to grab and hang from. Which the flying fox did, its little feet and arms clinging around her wrist and the back of her hand so it could nom on the piece of peach she held in her fingers while she also took his weight.

And yup definitely a boy.

Deeeeeeeefinitely a boy.

The thing with bats was you could absolutely tell.

"Aren't you a gorgeous boy?" Bel said softly. "Aren't you so handsome? Is that tasty?" He finished it quickly, or at least he shoved the fruit in his cheeks, stuffing them until they were filled up. "Aren't you silly? Aren't you greedy?" Bel continued, and carefully hooked his back feet and turned him upside down carefully. She lifted her arms up to one of the hanging branches and carefully hooked him there, unconcerned at the few flaps of his wings when he wasn't sure he trusted her. Once he was ensconced and happily pigging out on the contents of his stuffed cheeks, Bel ripped off another bit of peach and started enticing another bat.

Okay, rude. He wasn't scared, just a little repulse from touching furry warm bodies of creatures he wasn't familiar with. "Who said I was scared? I'm not." Nathan scoffed. "We weren't provided gloves and I forgot to bring them here. Anyway, this works... I'm luring them with food ...aren't I?"" Atleast he had two bats eating his peaches. She had none. So his plan was working. Then suddenly, another bat came flying in from nowhere and snatched his leftover pieces from his hand! He jumped back in surprise and almost cursed.

Default Post a million, but bat number 2 and 3 lol.
lives in a hobbit hole || Ern and Touz's Nuzzle || roflysst || looking at a seed packet

This time Bel had two bats coming at her, one of them landed on her shoulder and went for the peach in her hand, the other clung to her leg and went for the peach in her pocket. Laughing, Bel passed the one on her shoulder the bit of peach she already had, and then carefully lifted the other one away from her pocket. It chittered in annoyance.

"Its alright, calm down. You're hungry I know. But have some manners please!" She said lifting it to her chest and letting it get a grip on the fastenings to her cloak. The bruised up last bit of peach in her pocket, Bel extracted and tore it in a couple pieces, discarding the pip. She gave a big bit to the complainer on her chest, and the smaller bit to the one who was already on her shoulder eating happily, equalizing the amounts. The complainer didn't like that: that was hers! And she loudly protested even while eating the big piece Bel had given her.

"Aren't you just so disagreeable? Sharing is a good thing, miss! You've got the same amount!" Miss complainer was also not particularly inclined to move, it seemed, so when Bel extracted her from her cloak, and lifted her feet up to the branch, the flying fox flapped its wings rapidly in annoyance. Not enough to fly away, but absolutely enough to show she was kicking up a fuss about it, though she calmed down once she was attached to the branch.

As for the fellow on her shoulder --definitely another male!-- Bel had an easier time with him since he was just happy to be getting some nommy peach. He was making a mess of himself though, juice and pulp all over his face. A juvenile then, she thought. Not a baby, but he still hadn't mastered some things had he? She helped him onto the branch too and then it was time to get at the mango she still had left.

Thankfully so far no bats had peed or pooed on her.

Probably one would before she got out of here though. They were good at that.

The longer he stood there was the more awkward and ridiculous she felt about the entire situation. It probably WAS an incredibly stupid and irrational fear, especially in a case like this where there was literally no danger and nothing could go wrong but there was nothing to be done about it. Her mind had already drafted up several scenarios and there wasn't a single one she was willing to chance.

Add to that the fact that half the issue would come from the anxiety about having anxiety inside that cave and it was clear to see it just wasn't a good idea, regardless of how dumb she felt for having to remain standing out here when everyone else was fine.

"Yeah." She nodded absentmindedly at the offer to continue cutting fruits, discouraged by the fact it was all she would really be able to do.

It was.......frustrating, to say the least.

His next sentence did earn him a curious raise of her brow though. Decorating the Great Hall with the bats? "I can help?" She'd never actually gotten to help with that sort of thing before and even if it wasn't a direct offer to study the bats, it would still be an opportunity to be around them and gather whatever she could. "Even the poisonous ones?? You mean it??"

Derf reckoned Bel had a point with the tearing of the fruit rather than a Severing Charm, though he also reckoned that there was no way that Jessa was going inside the cave and he offered her a bit of a timid look but did not allow his eyes to settle there for long just because, well, there was already loads of attention being drawn to the situation - boxing her in MORE - and he figured his best friend could use with some of them getting distracted elsewhere.

Ripper. Heh. It was refreshing hearing Bel talk too.

Shrugging to Natalie as Jessa essentially dismissed them, he plucked a piece of fruit and dug his fingers into it to tear off a piece - just as Professor Wayland came over to talk with Jessa. "PROFESSOR! CANIHELPWITHTHEBATSTOO?!" he squeaked, half inserting himself into their conversation but trying to be kiiiiiiiinda discrete about it. Ish.

It was HARD not to let his brow knot as he listened...though he was TRYING not to because there was a task to be done and BATS to interact with and sldjfdslfsdjfs. "Let's go," he whispered, giving Natalie's hand a tug and heading inside the cave with his hands cooooooovered in fruit juice already. Juice that trickled down his arm as he raised it above his head as they walked into the cave after Bel.

"This spot looks good," he whispered as he slipped his hand out of Natalie's and lifted BOTH his up in the air, palms towards the roof of the cave to wait for some of the bats to come swooping in with their enticing fruit. Though he did squish things up a bit more to, you know, make the smell all potent and such. "Psssssst...Amanda," Derf hissed, nodding his head towards the first year. "Join us?"

The more fruit smell in one place the better, you know? And there were already a few bats swooping close to him and Natalie as was.

The peaches she had used for the first three bats were loosing their appeal, or so it seamed. It had been several minutes since her last bat was placed on the branch. Deciding that she would try another fruit, Emmalyn slowly and quietly made her way over to the pile. "Ouch, sorry." She whispered to the unknown student she ran into along the way.

Reaching the fruit without further accident or collision, she grabbed a ripe apple and headed back to her area. This time she was going to try a new technique. She simply held the apple in her outstretched hand and slowly waved it back and forth. Just moments later, a large bat landed on her shoulder. Offering it the promised treat, she guided her new rider to the branch and sat the apple next to it.

Now she was going to need another piece of fruit, or so she thought. Much to her surprise, her fifth bat flew over to have a look at the large sweet apple and perched on the branch without one bit of effort made on her part.

With a peach in hand, Hanna tried to copy exactly what Professor Wayland had done. She held the dripping piece of fruit flesh in her hand, not needing to give it a squeeze. The juices DRIPPED onto the ground, and even she could smell it.

In seconds, two bats flew from the tree. Hanna was trying to stand her ground, but it wasn't a very comforting sight. Two fruit bats flying towards one. No, definitely not. Her eyes widened, and she took some steps back, worried about BATS FLYING TOWARDS HER. She was only little! In her fear she dropped the bits of peach on the ground, and continued to step back. Luckily the bats were only after the fruit, even though there was still juice on her hand. They landed on the ground to eat the piece she had dropped.

Oops. She hadn't meant to do that. She meant to be able to return them to the tree. So, she got a new peach, repeated the process, and held it out towards the two bats on the ground. One of them spread its wings and Hanna squeezed her eyes shut. Seconds later, a heavy (to her) thing landed on her shoulder and snatched the bit of fruit from her hand. The other bat, following the first one, did the same. She felt scared, but balanced, with one bat on each shoulder. She offered the second bat another chunk of peach, and slowly... SLOWLY made her way back to the tree. Once there, the weight was taken off her shoulders, and the two bats hopped back onto the tree.

Yeah Professor Wayland knows what he's talking about with the entertainment industry innit? Gosh just wait till he can do something about that in the future spoilers sweetie.

But oh oh! Cave expedition tiiiiime!. He's been waiting all night for this, and he eagerly jumped on his feet and followed the Professor inside. Pointing his lighted wand downward, he looked up at the reflected illumination, and the sight that greeted him got him all misty eyed. Flying Foxes!! ADORABLE Flying Foxes. He wanted to pet them, since the Professor did say that they are used to humans, but his Mom's ways of raising him to not unnecessarily touch creatures of the wild was still firmly ingrained. But they are so cute asdfasdfsf.

Instructions were given, all of which makes logical sense and personal relief. Because if anyone be hollering in this cave Ace would probably accidentally on purpose cast a quieting charm about that person. Because his ears are musician's ears ok? They are very sensitive instruments.

And the years of feeding creatures with Mom with at times strange routines comes in handy now, and he began to collect fruits that were disgustingly soggy-- because those are the BEST sort that fruit bats would eat, fruits that have fallen on the ground, in piles, usually at a state of decomposition.

He needed five bats to come share the blessings, so he began arranging their little get together. He pulled together a few of the floating limbs to surround a wide, central spot on the ground. Then he started smashing the overripe fruits and started tossing them on the spot in a haphazard pile, tossing a handful slightly outside the central spot. The scent of the overripe fruit salad of sorts was overpowering within the confines of the cave, and he saw the flappy puppehs (thats what he thought of them) started to zoom for the makeshift smorgasbord "Come'ere come'ere" he coaxed them with more sweet soggy salad on his hand, patting the floating limbs and even sprinkling a few fruits onto them to get them to stay.

With two bats fed with delicious ripe peaches, and back onto their home!tree, it was time to do the same for another three bats. Okay, but this time, Hanna wanted to be ready. She let herself know that the first time the bats came to her, of course it would be a little scary. THAT WAS OKAY HANNA NEWTON. That was okay. This time, she'd be more prepared. Getting another peach, and doing the same trick, she had a chunk of dripping peach in either hand. She stood, feet slightly apart, her CORE braced for impact of the little bats. It took a while, and Hanna thought perhaps they were all either wary of her, or already fed and full of fruit. Well that wouldn't be great, of course. It just meant she needed to ENTICE them even more.

She squeezed the peach chunks, oozing out juice and peach flesh. That seemed to do the trick. THREE bats came towards her. Not all at once, but close enough apart that she remained in her position. The first bat landed on her left shoulder. The second on her right, and the third circled her, tried to climb onto her left shoulder, and decided for her forearm. It gripped and hung there. She was lopsided in weight, and trying not to FREAK OUT at the sight of these three bats on her. The little things were hungry. And, okay, they were very cute. And this was a totally awesome activity. SHE WAS HOLDING AND FEEDING BATS! She needed to write home as soon as she got back to her dormitory. To Josie, and to her parents. Lena would be soooooo jealous, too.

The bat dangling from her forearm was pretty greedy, and it snatched up half the peach before Hanna could react. She quickly moved her arm up to the bat on her shoulder, only, of course, the other one came with the hand. It was on her forearm. But the shoulder bat was smart and quick, and gobbled the remaining bit of peach before the forearm bat had another chance. "Good g-b-thing..." Hanna said. Were they boy bats or girl bats? How did one check? The one on her right shoulder was really well behaved. It didn't even try to eat the peach that Hanna was holding in that hand. "You're so good, aren't you." Hanna reached up with her right hand to give the bat the peach, which it ate.

"Time to go back home," Hanna said. She walked with them back to the tree, feeling slightly more confident this time than last. Doing a lot of things for the first time was quite scary, and this experience was no different. Bats. She'd never handled a bat before, so it was only natural. Once at the tree, Hanna held up her left arm, and the bat on her forearm changed crip onto the branch. It was followed by the other two, and Hanna watched them settle back into their tree life, wishing she had a basin and soap to wash the peach juice.

Fighting? Junia hadn't meant for that to happen, but she supposed more bats were better, yeah? "They must really like pears." Which made sense. They were ripe and sweet and Junia offered out a piece to the smaller bat who'd lost the battle, knowing how losing felt. "Right here," She said softly, a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth when the bat hesitated and then swooped down, stopping to munch on the fruit. Mission accomplished. She waited until it was completely engrossed in what it was doing and moved it carefully and quietly to the branch, where the bat took over, getting comfortable. It was kind of cute, actually. Who knew?

Moving back to Finn, the sixth year nudged him gently. "So far, so good." She still had a piece of pear left and as she went to break it in half for him, a larger bat swooped RIGHT in front of her face, causing her to let out a startled squeak. UM. It was just perched there on her wrist, waiting for her to open her hand and expose the fruit and she was so surprised at how bold it was, she nearly forgot to do that...but then she realized and revealed what the bat wanted most. As it munched happily, she tentatively moved it over to the branch, comfortable with the fact that it cared much more about the food than it did about being moved off of her. Thank Merlin.

"That one was huge."

It wasn't long before Bel had another adorable Flying Fox interested in the fruit she had to offer. Her calm and relaxed nature and also her confidence around them didn't hurt that either. This little cutie flew at her and landed on her forearm, clinging around it. It was a good thing she was wearing long sleeves because it would be digging in a bit too much otherwise, but Bel didn't mind. She tore off a bit of mango, peeling the tough skin off too before holding it for her to eat.

"There! That's good isn't it? Aren't you a good eater?"
Bel said, keeping her voice calm and quiet. The bat was making some pretty serious nomming noises as it ate too. So cute.

Oh, and where was everyone else? Bel looked around a bit but her attention went back to the bat when she protested the fact that she'd eaten all the mango Bel had already given her. Bel couldn't help but give her more mango, and then carefully grabbed her feet and unhooked them before helping her get a safe grip on the branch.

Kye was able to coerce another two bats down with the rest of the peach from her bag. It took a while, but finally it happened. Okay this was taking tooooo long. Kye decided that it was time to try a different tactic. She went back to one of the fruit bins and picked out a variety. She needed two more bats, so she decided to start her own cornucopia. Taking one of each fruit in her hands, she cut them open and with only a slight grimace, squeezed them in her hand.

Kye waved her hand in the air and let the aroma surround her. And boy did that do it! Two bats came flying down from different directions, and perched on her forearm. She placed them both on a branch, and as she did so, another bat came flying down at her! This counted too right?? She was at 6!! She had now officially gone 'above and beyond' and she was done. No more bat attacks please and thank you.

Honestly, Vivian wasn't sure if she was scared of the bats. She never really gave them much attention whenever they were inside the castle during Halloween. That was probably because she never had to touch them or anything. As much as possible, the prefect just really wanted to stay away from bats. But did it look like she had a choice to walk out? Not likely. Part of her didn't want to sit out of the activity either.

Vivian went over to take an apple and examined it for a moment. Now she wanted one, too. She made a mental note to visit the kitchen later before sneaking back to her dormitory to snatch a fruit. But for now, she'd let the bats have it. For a moment, the blond contemplated on biting a part of the apple so she could expose some juicy part of it... but decided against it because what if the apple wasn't washed beforehand? She didn't need germs in her stomach, thanks. So instead, the blond sort of crushed the apple on the wall of the cave hard enough, then rolled the fruit like a rolling pin to soften it up. And maybe she somehow overdid it when she felt the fruit's juice trickle down her hand. Eh, well... this was going to be sticky but it would surely lure in a bat as planned.

Actually, not as planned because a few moments later, there were basically three bats attacking swooping down to her for a taste of that appley goodness on her hand. Vivian nearly panicked when two of the bats found themselves comfortable on her shoulders, and the third one decided her head was a nice place to perch on. If anyone had a flashlight at the moment, they would definitely see the panic on her face despite trying to keep herself together. Carefully, the prefect cut off parts of her apple into three and placed them on the tree limb. "There, there," she said, mostly for herself to calm down. "You can leave my shoulders now, thanks. You too, head percher. " It took a few moments for the bats to leave their posts and fly to the branch.

She was... safe. Yes, Vivian Fairfield was still alive and kicking. The Slytherin totally abandoned the apple and gave them to the three bats she had been able to lure. That way, they won't leave the branch. However, she still needed two more to complete her list. Maybe a softer fruit would be ideal this time.

Harriet really was not into this. She didn't like it, and she certainly didn't want to have bats all over her. What if they pooped on her? That would not be cool at all. She did however, think that looking at all the bats was cool. They all lived together, and that was super awesome. She knew if she lived with a lot of people altogether then she would be super annoyed. She couldn't handle that many people at the best of times. So if she had to live with a load of people all of the time, then she knew that it would not end well. So knowing the bats could do it, was super cool. Hattie did however, did want to get all her bats, and get it done quickly. So she cut herself some more mango. A bigger slice this time. Maybe she'd be able to two bats and then that would help.

She stuck her hand out again, putting it far away so far that they wouldn't get so close. Two bats did swing down, and land on her arm. Yes. Her arm was better than her shoulders or head. She smiled, and fed them the mango with her other hand. Perfect. Three down. Two more to go.

Pears. Is that what they had? He hadn't been able to tell in the darkness, and with all the different fruit around, it's not like he could smell it without moving a ton. "Yeah, pears over the apples for sure." He startled when she nudged him, but mostly because every single touch in this cave was for sure a bat and therefore a bit freaky.

He laughed as his next piece was stolen before he could even grab it from Junia. "Sneaky little bugger, aren't you?" The bat, not her, obviously. "Massive! I'll just grab another for myself..." And it was going to be a pear if he could help it. Mission accomplished he was back and ready for action. Or... INaction.

The drill was getting very familiar at this point. Hand out, tensed up in anticipation, trying not to think about an imminent attack. By this point every single bat in the cave knew what was happening, so Finnlay didn't have to wait more than a few seconds before SWOOP! came another one. "Hey bud, eat up." This one was totally a fast eater and the pear was gone in a flash. "Well here's another few pieces for you, Junia." He held his hand out with the fruit covered, given what had happened last time they tried this.

Beam. Isabel smiled as Professor Wayland praised her answer. Even though she had figured that it was correct, it never hurt to have confirmation. Not that she was a person who cared all that much for validation. It just was nice was all. More notes were written even though she had already been aware that bats didn't just live in caves. It was the superstitions that were new to her, and even though she thought they were nonsense they could very well show up on NEWTs next term and it was worth it to make a note of.

FINALLY it was time for them to move on with the lesson and the only part left was the main activity. It had better be fun. Obviously it would take place in the cave because why else would they be here? Slightly eager, she followed the professor and her fellow students inside and saw that he was indeed right in saying that the place was boring. Real shame because it would have been nice to do a bit of exploring otherwise - obviously nothing dangerous since she wasn't an idiot. Well, looked like there wasn't anything to see beyond what was right in front of them as it was basically just one big room... After eyeing the bins filled with fruit, her attention turned back to Professor Wayland as he explained what they needed to do. Seemed to be more or less what she figured given not just the fruit, but the levitating tree limbs. Well, this seemed easily enough, she figured. Especially given the demonstration that he gave them. Seemed that the main thing was to be gentle with the bats and not shine lights in their faces or make loud noises; common sense since no one wanted to be bitten or scratched. Fruit bats might be kind of cute, but who knew the kinds of diseases that they could carry.

Partner work was something that Isabel didn't care for, so she knew immediately what she wanted to do. This was an easy enough task and she could easily lure bats over with fruit on her own. She liked doing a lot of things on her own, and a lot of that probably had to do with the fact that she had six siblings and one of them was Jesse. A major pain.

Making her way over to where the fruit was located, she picked out a peach. Now that she had her bit of fruit, she looked around for a free tree limb that she could use for her bats to perch on. Spotting one near the back, she shrugged and made her way over. Now she just needed to cut the fruit open. The most convenient way would be to use the wall, but then she'd end up with a huge mess and peach everywhere. The bat would go over to the wall and not to her... So instead she took out her wand and used the severing charm to cut a piece off of it. Unlike Professor Wayland she did not have a swiss army knife on her.

A small squeeze of her hand had peach juice pouring out.

Holding the small piece out she had a momentary panic over if a bunch of bats would swoop her way, but gave a sigh of relief when only one made his way over. "You're kind of cute," she said as it perched on her shoulder. Isabel was trying not to be grossed out by a bat being on her, but really it wasn't TOO bad; there were WAY worse creatures out there than this and it made short work of the fruit. "Okay, you can get off of me now..." Holding her hand out, towards the limb, she was pleased when it took the hint and alighted before landing where it was supposed to go.

Awesome. One down and four to go.

Another chunk was cut off from the peach and another squeeze. Her hand was already getting sticky and that wasn't very pleasant but at least it was something delicious and not a tomato or something. Raw tomatoes were GROSS.

"Hello," she said to the second bat as it made a sound and flew over to her. As it perched on her shoulder she stayed still and let it eat the bit of food. Fortunately the piece wasn't too small because otherwise there was a worry of her finger accidentally getting bit in the process and she didn't exactly want to leave class to see the healer. "Very good." She smiled as it flew off to the tree limb to join the first bat. Almost half way done the activity! It wasn't all that bad either. She was kind of liking it even if she was sticky and the smell of peach was starting to make her hungry.

The next chunk of peach was bigger than the other two, and Isabel had to keep herself from shrieking when TWO bats made their way over to her. That was rather unexpected, and would have scared her if she hadn't already dealt with the creatures up close. Instead she got a grip on herself and managed to give a small chuckle. Lesson learned. Carefully she held the piece of peach out and waited for them to eat it. Part of her was worried that they would start fighting or something, but apparently they managed to eat together peacefully. Maybe they really WERE gentle creatures. Holding her arm out she watched as they both took off from her shoulder and made their way over to the perch. Because of unexpected developments she only had one more bat to gather.

Not too much of her peach remained, but there was enough for this and she could eat the left overs. She had no idea if they were supposed to do that or not, but really she couldn't see a problem with it? Not like it would hurt anything, and Isabel wanted to do it anyway. She smiled as she cut another chunk off - this one was smaller than the last to avoid any repeats - and waited to see what bat would wander over next. It didn't take more than a few seconds before one made its way over to her. "You're a big one, aren't you?" Clearly this one wasn't starving. It certainly was enthusiastic as it ate the whole chunk of peach in one go. "I'm glad you enjoyed that, but it's time to go on your perch now." With some gentle prodding it took the hint and landed among the others.

And she was done!!

Isabel snacked on the last bit of her peach before banishing the pit and washing her hands. How long before she could leave? This was fun and all, but she didn't exactly want to wait around for long...

Skylar wasn't sure what to expect when she entered the cave, which was maybe why she held back behind her classmates just a tad. After not hearing any screams though, but it seemed more like shrills of delight, if anything, the sixth year entered. No cliffs. Just a giant flat room and these ADORABLE faces of flying foxes. Could she keep one? Actually, scratch that, because what she saw and heard next about luring them with fruit, well, she wanted to eat a piece of fruit. Not that she hadn't eaten, but she liked mangoes and peaches, so why not?

Hmm, so they liked peacefulness, which meant ... using magic to split the fruit would probably be frowned upon? She didn't have a Swiss Army knife on her like Professor Wayland, which meant she only had one tool to use. Her teeth. Because how was she supposed to cut into a piece of fruit and get the juices flowing from it without cutting it open? Grinning at her plan, she took a couple mangoes and a couple peaches, shoving three of them into her robes pocket for when she needed fresh juice and took a giant bite out of one peach. Squeezing it gently in her hand, the juices flowed down her hand and wrist and she regretted doing the peach first because it was certainly making her hand sticky with grossness, but ... it was enough. Because sure enough, one bat swooped down to land on her forearm and she started feeding it the rest of the peach, while it was distracted with the fruit, she backed away close to one of the tree limbs, and let it fly up onto the limb, peach in its mouth.

Perfect, four to go.

Using another peach since her hand was already sticky, she did the same thing, bite, squeeze the peach, and let the juices flow. And maybe it was because her hand was EXTRA sticky, but one bat flew down and landed onto her shoulder and then, while she was feeding that one, another one landed on her other shoulder. Uh ... two for one? But eh, how would she give them each piece of the peach? Carefully maneuvering her hand to not disturb her shoulders too much, she broke off a chunk, sticking it into one bat's mouth and then the remaining, gave to the other. Perfect, two more fed bats on her shoulders and slowly she backed up toward another tree limb, letting the two apparent twin bats fly up onto the limb. Good, good. She was doing quite well, so far, if she did say so herself.

Two more and then she could wash her hands ..... Mango in hand, she proceeded to take a bite of that, noticing it was much less juicy than the peaches... but yet, it was still juicy enough, fresh mango juice rolling down her hand and arm, as she was thinking simple handwashing wasn't going to do the trick. No, she was going to need a nice long bath after this sticky mess. It wasn't long before another bat landed on her, licking at her hand, to which she proceeded to feed it the rest of the mango, once again indicating for it to go onto the tree limb. She was getting good at this and honestly if there was a less a sticky way to do this, she would do this all afternoon.

One more to go though. Taking the last mango out of her robe pocket, she was actually kind of glad she got to split one peach earlier with the twin bats, since she'd taken a perfect amount of fruit. Bite. Squeeze. Let the juices flow. It was a simple enough routine and she got to snack too. Huh, were all the bats fed or something? Squinting into the distance, she looked for any that weren't on tree limbs yet, moving slowly and cautiously around the cave ... The other four had come so quickly to her, so it was strange that the last one was taking so long. And then, a large flying fox flew down all of a sudden, almost making Skylar's hear skip a beat, but fortunately she kept her composure. Interaction with the other four had made her believe Wayland in they were truly harmless so even though it was fast, it was nothing to be afraid over, right? It did give her a fright, but another squeeze of the mango and the flying fox didn't even spare a minute on her like the others. No, it just swooped down, snagged the fruit and flew off to its own limb floating higher than the rest. Weird.

But hey, she was done and she'd have licked her hand except something told her not to after the bats had been licking it... Could she just wash up now, please?

"Thanks." Junia smiled some, not that he'd be able to see it. Perhaps he could hear it in her voice. She found she could sometimes, especially with friends and family. She held the two pieces, one in each hand, and held them out in front of her. It was true, the bats were on to them and it took no time at all for two to come swooping down, one brushing past Junia's ear and sending a shiver down her spine. Your other senses really were heightened in the dark.

"Enjoy, little guys." She paused, then added, "Or girls." They'd be sleeping peacefully after a nice meal like this and she made sure they had a comfortable spot on the branch for just that reason.
