Default CoMC Lesson 1: Gone Batty!

It was a nice and cool October evening, but not cold enough to need a sweater yet. There was a soft glow of light in the sky and the sun had just dipped below the horizon; it was officially twilight. Tristan usually set up his lessons in front of the barn, but this one was set a little further into the forest than usual, but not too far. He had set up in a little clearing just outside of a cave. Nothing that would cause them harm lived here, but he knew a cave may be a little scary for some students.

As usual, there was a semi-circle of hay bales set out for the students, and his trusty blackboard was just to the right of the cave entrance. There was no evidence of what kind of creature they would be working with today. He liked keeping them surprised! To the left of the cave there was a large Adirondack Chair made out of hay bales, and that was where Professor Wayland could be found; sipping his Chai Tea from a mug shaped like a Niffler, waiting patiently for his students to arrive.

OOC: Welcome to the first CoMC Lesson of the term! Though this is our first lesson together, this is not the first CoMC lesson of the year, so please keep that in mind! Please make sure you take a gander at the CoMC Rules while waiting. Class will start in 24 hours. Class has begun please jump in!

Default Identifying the bats
1 of 4 Amigos Don't underestimate me!

Miranda may have cringed and made an odd little noise in the back of her throat when they were told that they were going to be learning about and possibly working with bats... EWWWW!.. No thank you!.. The thought of any of those flying rodents coming near her completely skeeved her out..
BUT she could at least make a list of each bats attributes and then look them over for the briefest of moments before looking to try and Identify each of them by looking through her textbook/ reference book.

A foot long, much longer than the others, brown eyes, brown fur and black wings. - This is the Indian Flying Fox.. One of the largest of all bat species.

An inch or so in size with black eyes, reddish-brown fur, and pig-like snout. - This bat is the Kitti Hog-Nosed bat

No Unicorns. Rylee’s small faltered ever so slightly at the knowledge of there being no unicorns today. Well that stunk. She hadn’t thought there would be, what with the cave and all but it never hurt to hope. “That’s okay, professor. I’m sure whatever we learn about today will be just as cute as a unicorn.” In its own way. Nothing was as cute as a unicorn… except for well… a unicorn. “You don’t?!” she giggled. Boy, was he missing out! She nodded her head of ginger hair making a mental note to find out what his favorite creature was and get him a cup just like her own. Cause he wanted one. Mhmm. She heard him say as much. Would it be strange if she gave her professor a gift?

“Uh-huh!” Rylee exclaimed giving a little bounce on her not very comfy but can handle it hay bale as she answered Miranda's questions. “Professor Wayland says we’re not going to see any unicorns today but that’s alright.” It was only a small heartbreak. “I’m good! I owl home all the time and mirror Rian and Reese lots…” Like daily, every night. Even if it’s just to say goodnight. She missed her unofficial twin so so sooo much. “Our common room is great! And everyone’s been really nice to me so far.” See, no problems here. Bright blue eyes shone happily as she turned her attention onto the professor since the lesson was starting now.

With as much of her attention as she could muster turned onto the professor, she pulled out a sheet of clean parchment and her quill which of course was dipped into purple glittery ink. Her quill met the parchment to begin her note taking, only she paused.

Bats?

Bats were NOT unicorns. Not even close. Though some of them were really rather cute looking. Like the ones that flew around the forest at home. As the professor made the bats visible she gave a wiggle in excitement. “So cute…” she whispered nudging Miranda. “Lookit that itty bitty one.” Giggles.
Aaww they weren’t allowed to touch them. That stunk. So simple ole’ note taking it was. It was time to see how much she knew and remembered from all those books she read. Including her textbook. And her adventures out in the forest at home with Reese.

SPOILER!!: Notes!
Bat 1: Yellow eyes, green skin, Do Not Disturb: Poisonous - Mortis Bat! Definitely Magical!
Bat 2: Green eyes, pale blue skin, Do Not Disturb: Ability to Stun - Spectre Bat! Definitely Magical!
Bat 3: Black eyes, brown fur, 4 inches, Hematophagous - Vampire Bat! Non-magical but should be cause it has ‘vampire’ in its name!
Bat 4: Roughly a foot long/ really BIG, brown eyes, brown fur, black wings - Fruit Bat! Non-magical!
Bat 5: Itty bitty hardly an inch long, black eyes, reddish brown fur, pig-like snout -Bumblebee Bat! Non-magical!

Rylee tugged her textbook from her bag at her feet and began to quickly flip through the pages making sure the names she had written down on her parchment were correct to the best of her knowledge. It never hurt to double check when you could even if you knew the answers.

Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na Bat!lesson.

Okay that sound better in her head, it was a good thing that was where it was going to stay. Funny though because she had a conversation with Zar about bats over at the pathways not too long ago. She had to stop of herself from nerding out then. But now this was a lesson so she was totally going to nerd out here.

She pulled out her notebook and flipped it to a empty sheet. Now to figure out and name these bats. First without opening her text book she looked over the bat and The first one, she read the sign above it, Poisonous. And the second one read ability to stun. A Poisonous bat and a Stunna of a bat. Right? And the third sign said “Hematophagous” hemato? That was blood or dealing with blood. The third one was definitely a type of vampire bat. The last two didn’t have a sign above so she looked over both of them very good. The last one was tiny, and she squinted her eyes to get all better look of it. Was it even a bat or leaf? It was that small.

SPOILER!!: Notes

rough draft
Bat 1: green skin = poisonous. enough said
Bat 2: STUNNA bat
Bat 3: Hematophagous. Vampire Bat.
Bat 4: Long, brown fur black.
Bat 5: Bat or a leaf? Really small bat

Now time to open her book, but like effort. Who around her already had their book open? She looked around, offering free help for a already open book.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

WHAT?! No! Why did he have to vanish the chair?

Dorian grumbled as the chair vanished from sight in front of his eyes. Had the man read his thoughts somehow and was doing it on purpose? Because he could have just pushed the chair aside to show the tree limb.

Another thing that caught him off guard was that they were actually working with bats today. Not a few moments ago he had thought how cool it would be to be working with those creatures and BAM.

The boy gasped suddenly and out of nowhere. WAS HE A SEER?! Maybe he should go to the Divination professor and ask? He scratched his jaw as he thought about the things that he could do if he really was a seer. That be so cool! He'd could see the future!

Oh, right,.... Bats.

Taking his notebook out of his bag together with a muggle pen, the second year opened it up to a blank page and walked towards the tree as it began to rotate.

SPOILER!!: notes

Bat 1. Freddy
Bat 2. Batty
Bat 3. Silvie
Bat 4. Emmy
Bat 5. Dracula!

Ok perhaps that was not what the professor wanted so he scratched out his answers and began for real. But seriously, "Do they have names, Professor?" he asked.

SPOILER!!: better notes

Yellow eyes, green skin=poisones (magical?)
Black eyes, brown fur , tiny = weird word (magical?)
Green eyes, pale blue skin = stunning bat (magical!)
Brown eyes, black wings, brown fur= (not magical)
???????you said there were five!
Black eyes, red brown fur, pig snout, tiny = (I don't know but I want it)

Dorian stopped writing for a moment and scratched out his last answer. If the professor said that there were five bats, there were five kinds of bats! He squinted his eyes, trying to find which he had not written down yet and it took him at least a full a five minutes of scratching his head and searching before he saw it hanging. It was so tiny! Could he have it? He went back to his notes and began to write again.

"Theroes is one of the centaurs who lives in the Forest," he explained to her, glancing around juuuuuuuuust in case he decided to pay them all a visit anyway. "He taught Divination here once, mum said. We're friends." At least that was what the delusional Hufflepuff thought.

And there was the confirmation that they WOULD be going into the cave...so naturally his eyes went back to Abey and Jessa, lingering there for a painful moment before the professor brought out bats. Levitated them out, rather, and for a brief instant Derf found the practice soooooooomewhat inhumane. But this WAS Professor Wayland so naturally that did not compute.

Derf was quick to write down the descriptions of the bats on a piece of parchment, Mortis Bat and Spectre Bat and Vampire Bat being quickly and easily identifiable - even without the little labels the professor had provided on them. "Loads of fruit bats around the grounds too," he informed Diandra as he added that to his running list. "Ballycastle Bats use one as their mascot. Used to think a vampire bat was more suitable though," he added, nodding his head towards another one of the bats, the one with the Hematophagous tag.

She did notice the look that Zita Valla gave at her and sure it was not a pleasant one. Maybe she's still upset about the time when Diandra refused to hang out with her and her clique. Ever since in primary school she had several experiences with those girls who wanted to befriend her just because of her certain factor and it was not nice, hence why she was quite reserved and only had like... maybe several friends? Anyway, let's just ignore that.

Her eyebrows raised as Derf mentioned about his centaur friend. She knew that there were many creatures lived in the forest but just didn't know the fact that 1) A centaur who used to teach divination here and 2) He and the centaur were friends. Diandra just nodded and smiled at him because the Professor had started the lesson already!

Just like what she had guessed (at least on her mind), they're going to learn about bats. But she was slightly wrong about the fact that bats were mundane, huh? Luckily she was with Derf who was good at this lesson so they could work together. "They all look the same for me." She commented. Well, there were a slight difference on each of them butt still, Diandra thought that didn't significantly make them different? "So.... I guess those with special abilities are the magical bats." Just like how to see the difference between muggles and wizards; wizards have special abilities called magic whereas muggles like her parents and the rest off her family didn't have any. Just like how Yamamoto explained when she discovered her as a witch.

Quote:
Poisonous bat: magical
Green-eyed pale blue-skin bat: definitely magical
Hematophagus: magical???
Brown bat: doesn't look that special so might be non-magical
Tiny bat: non-magical. maybe...
Finished scribbling the note on her parchment, she listened more to Derf's talk about bats. "Ballycastle Bat... Oh, right." It took her a moment to realize that it was a Quidditch team. Sorry not sorry, but Diandra only knew Toyohashi Tengu since it was the biggest team in Japan. "Do you think the vampire bat is magical?" She asked him.

Maxton glanced around at his classmates. People were scribbling stuff down on their parchment and he hadn't written anything yet. He'd checked out the chapter about bats pretty thoroughly, wanting to be absolutely right before he gave this a go.

He was confident about this.

He went over his notes a couple of times just to check for any mistakes until he settled on his final answers. That would do. When he was finished, the fourth year set his parchment in his lap and watched the bats some more. The vampire bat was pretty cool. He wondered if they'd make decent pets...

With a yawn, Kye made her way to COMC class. She could feel the night's cold coming, and she hoped that she didn't need to run back for a coat. It was all good though... for now.

Slight breezes only tonight please!

She kept her arms crossed, as her fingers were already feeling chilly.

As she made her way to class, she saw that many people were already here. Smiles to those she knew, and a "Good evening, Professor Wayland."

Ah wonderful, hay bales. Kye would much rather be in bed than this, but what could you do?

Yawning again, she listened as the Professor began, and couldn't help the look that crossed her face. Uhm, I'm sorry... bats? But why? Well, it was time to hold her tongue and see how this would proceed. She had had bad first impressions before. Althouuuughhhhhh that sign said that one was poisonous? First impression still strong.

She got her parchment out, as instructed, and started writing in columns. She could write down what the Professor had provided them, but she definitely needed her books for the rest of this.

Patrick felt the fear drain out of him. There would be no death for Hogwarts today. Grabbing his textbook from the bag at his feet he flipped it open and began to search out each of the different types of bats. He wasn't sure how some people were so into this kind of information. He was genuinely not a fan of it for the most part. He could always remember his mamaw walking at the zoo in the birds/bats section. She always feared that they'd land in her hair.

He flipped through the pages further and began to write down the assesment of the bats as he found them.

Text Cut: notes

Bat #1: Mortis Bat (green skin, yellow eyes, poisonous) Magical
Bat #2: Spectre Bat (pale blue skin, green eyes, can stun) Magical
Bat #3: Vampire Bat (brown fur, black eyes, drinks blood) could be magical, but isn't... though it really should be
Bat #4: Fruit Bat (brown fur, brown eyes, black wings) Non magical, aren't all muggles always looking at these at zoos?
Bat #5: Bumblebee Bat (reddish-brown fur, black eyes, pig-like snout) non magical

looking over the bats one more time he was a bit surprised by the varying size and differences between each one of the bats. He was always impressed with the animals and interesting things he learned in this class. He finished writing all of his notes on the five bats and waited to find out what they would be learning about these magical bats.

SPOILER!!: Daehyun

She was alright. As Shera showed him a half-hearted thumbs up, he knew it was just one of those days, so he would just let her be and pray that she'd be conscious enough to pay attention in class. Just enough to not get in trouble, the rest he could help her with.

Daehyun was almost bouncing on the bale of hay in excitement as he saw bats. How cute were they? He wanted to get up close and snuggle each - well, maybe not the poisonous one - but professor Wayland had told them not to, though he'd be lying if he said he wasn't already planning on staying after class to ask if he could touch them. With puppy eyes and all.

He had a hard time focusing on the professor's words, as he was too fascinated by the bats before their eyes, but he did process what they had to do, and pulled out of his bag both his textbook and his own bestiary, plus parchment and a quill, immediately writing down the description of each bat.

"Feeds on blood," he'd muttered to Shera, allowing her to have a look at his notes. He knew the first one was a Mortis bat, the second a Spectre bat, both very much magical, and he pondered a bit about the third, commonly known as the vampire bat. Magical, he wrote down next to its name, deciding that every living creature was magical in its own way, and no one could fight him on that. Flipping through the pages of his textbook, he recognized the smallest one as a bumblebee bat, though he wasn't sure about the largest one. Flying fox? was what he'd written next to its description, adding non-magical to the last two.

... though he still thought they were magical.
[/QUOTE]

Thank Merlin that Daehyun was there.

Because of course the really long word just meant 'feeds on blood'. Why wouldn't it mean that? And why couldn't they just say feeds on blood the same way they wrote ability to stun?

With Daehyun helping her in this section because she was still too slow she didn't have to worry too much about four of the bats, just quickly copying down his notes and hoping Professor Wayland would understand that she really was trying? And she was going to try even harder for when they did the next step!

Quote:
Bat:
Attributes:

Mortis
Poisonous; yellow eyes, green skin

Spectre
Ability to stun; green eyes, pale blue skin

Vampire
Hematophagous; black eyes, brown fur; approx. 4 inches

Brown eyes, brown fur, black wings

Bumblebee
Black eyes, reddish-brown fur, pig-like snout; approx. 1 inch
Now there was only one left for her to check out herself, because even Daehyun seemed unsure about the answer to that one. She decided to start by flipping to the Flying Fox page to see whether or not she could determine whether his assumption was correct.

It was better to start with a possibility and try to prove or eliminate it as one than start with nothing, right?

It didn't take long before Vivian and Hattie showed up, to which Skylar returned their presence with a brief eye gaze and smile. Not for too long, because Professor Wayland and his chai tea was starting the lesson. Bats was the topic of choice today, which admittedly was a letdown compared to previous lessons on phoenixes, but she would roll with it. Not like she had any other choice and if she did go the creature healer route, she'd have all sorts of creatures to contend with. Even those she didn't necessarily like.

Also, was he making a pun? Meat of the discussion? Because she was sure certain stronger animal advocates than her, wouldn't be content about that punny. Shrugging it off though, she had to admit she was amused too that he had to specify to not touch the bats. Yea, she wasn't planning on doing that unless she HAD to. What did he think she was? A Gryffindor? Nevermind that there were Gryffindors in the lesson, which was probably why he had to spell it out for them...

Onto her research and flipping through the textbook. It was pretty obvious to her that the first two were magical; the next two seemed so mundane it was just like screaming non-magical at her. And the last one, well, that was trickier ... because on one hand, it definitely seemed basic, yet the snout ... there was something, magical about it. Was she allowed to ask a friend? Speaking of friends, oh there was Kye over there! And now Skylar was sad she didn't save her a seat. Next time, right? Back to her notes and books;

Text Cut: notes

Bat #1: Yellow eyes, green skin, poisonous. MAGICAL. Mortis bat
Bat #2: Green eyes, pale blue skin, ability to stun. MAGICAL. Spectre bat.
Bat #3: Black eyes, brown fur, 4 inches big, hematophagous. NON-MAGICAL. Vampire bat
Bat #4: Foot long, much longer than the others, brown eyes, brown fur, black wings. NON-MAGICAL. Flying Fox
Bat #5: Tiny, only an inch or so in size, black eyes, reddish-brown fur, pig-like snout. NON-MAGICAL? Kitti's Hog-nosed Bats, or Bumblebee bat

And she was done. Was she remotely close? Was she supposed to speak her answers allowed or would Wayland come around and look at their papers?

With another flick of his wand, the tree limb floated closer to the center of the semi-circle so that the creatures were completely visible.

What were these creatures exactly? Well...."Today we will be working with Bats! I am sure some of you are wondering why Bats, they aren't magical! But I promise you, you are mistaken." He said with a grin.

"Now, before we get into the meat of the discussion, I want you to look at these creatures and on a piece of parchment, identify the five different bats in front of you and determine whether they are in the magical or non-magical families of bats." He levitated the bats into the center of the circle, and with a click of his wand it very slowly began to rotate so that everyone could see each individual bat.

One bat had yellow eyes and green skin, and just above it was a sign that said, 'Do Not Disturb: Poisonous.' Another bat had green eyes, pale blue skin, and a sign that said, 'Do Not Disturb: Ability to Stun,' above it. The next bat had black eyes, brown fur, it was about 4 inches big and had a sign that said 'Hematophagous,' above it. The fourth bat was about a foot long, much longer than the others, had Brown eyes, brown fur and black wings. The fifth and final bat was hanging from the thinnest point of the limb, and was so tiny it was difficult to see. It may have been an inch or so in size with black eyes, reddish-brown fur, and pig-like snout.

"One rule: Please do not touch the bats. You may begin." Tristan grinned, and backed out of the circle to walk around all of the students in case anyone had a question.

If you need help or aren't sure about a couple of those you can shoot me a PM! A hint, make sure you use all your RESOURCES and TEXTBOOKS The activity is pretty simple. Identify each bat and determine which are magical and which are non-magical!

You have roughly 48 to 72 hours depending on active posting.

Bats. They were working with bats.

Alessandro was silently pleased at this topic because, well, his cousin Bastien had a pet bat. He did not know much about the creatures but he knew some and that was always better than nothing.

When the professor allowed the students to get a closer look at the five different type of bats, Al struggled to even think of five different kinds of bats. He knew the basics like fruit bats and vampire bats, but until today he was barely aware that such a thing as magical bats existed.

His other classmates seemed to be writing down their answers with great gusto. Perhaps, because most of them were older, they knew more about magical bats than he did but everyone seemed to be almost too knowledgable on the subject. And he offhandedly considered that there might be a deep-rooted system of cheating at this school. It would explain a lot.

Alessandro dipped his quill in ink and started to piece together what information he could about the five bats hanging above him.

SPOILER!!: notes

bat one: n/a
bat two: ghostly bat??
bat three: vampire bat
bat four: fruit bat
bat five: dwarf bat

"That's why." Her response was barely audible over the general whisper of the class but it was evidently in relation to the response he'd given to Abey--Abra, he'd said it was Abra now--about going inside the cave. It wasn't the dark that scared Jessa, nor was it the possibility of something dangerous waiting on the otherside. Just...why couldn't whatever was inside come OUT to them inside? The Ravenclaw couldn't do small or confined spaces......................to put it mildly, and didn't think today--tonight--was the time to push that limit.

One roomed cave meant one entrance, one exit, add the horde of students who'd all be going in at the same time, the margin for error, the unlikelihood of a speedy and coordinated escape, the improbability she'd been able to forget long enough about the one entrance, once exit in order to get any work done or maintain steady breathing.

The list went on and on. A full list of reasons why Jessa Susanna Cambridge was NOT going into that cave.

That decided, the 5th year turned her attention to the tree that seemed to appear out of nowhere--but was evidently there the entire time. Identifying bats. That she could do. That kept them outside here so there was nothing daunting about that. Just don't think about the cave.

But you know what was funny? The more she told herself not to was the more she DID, in typical Jessa Cambridge fashion where once the flip had been switched, there was no unflipping it. Merlin it was gonna be a long night.

"You'll do just fine." Junia smiled at Finn, appreciative as she slipped on his flannel. The added layer made her feel cozy and comfortable and she nudged him gently, offering a quiet, "Thanks." With him on one side of her and Felicity on the other, she was sure to survive this class. It helped that Abey didn't seem too horrified over what that walking flirt machine had done to him. Derf though, well that boy looked just as uncomfortable as she imagined she had and she gave him a sympathetic look. Really though, he should've been right there next to her cousin. Looking after him. That's what best friends were for.

...Thank Merlin class was starting.

Truth be told, Junia knew next to nothing about bats, magical or otherwise. She tried to recall a time when she'd come across magical ones in her text book, but nothing came to mind. The ones with the colorful skin made her wonder about magical abilities and the mention of stunning also offered a clue, so she quickly jotted the designation 'magical' beside one and two on her parchment. The third, well, she'd heard that non magical bats enjoyed the blood of animals, so that one didn't stand out as much. She gave it the non magical designation, but added a question mark in parentheses. The last two were given the same designation as the third and she was done, at least with her magical-non magical naming. The types of bats they were, well, she wasn't sure.

"Either of you know which page we might find bats on?" She glanced at Finn and then Felicity as she set her text book in her lap.

Abra couldn't remember the last time he had this many conflicting emotions going on at once (except that maybe if he were thinking straight he would have realised 'conflicting emotions' was sort of his perpetual state of existence). He was already subdued enough over it, but then, when Professor Wayland answered him, the way he sort of avoided properly answering the question made Abra fully expect the worse, and he tensed up all the more.

No. Okay, he just... he wasn't going to go in there. It didn't really matter what he was told about whether the creatures would harm him; it wasn't the creatures that he was worried about, unless there was a monster in there. Was there a monster in there? Abra made his mind up already; last term he'd tried to make himself do something he knew he wouldn't be okay with, and it had not ended well. This year, he was learning from that mistake. Know your limits.

Once he'd decided that, it did make him feel a little better. Just a little, though, because he would still have the issue of how he was going to tell Wayland, in no uncertain terms, without sounding like he was trying to disrespect him.

When Zita spoke beside him again, Abra turned to look at her, and even though a lot of his confusing emotions were about HER and the rest (aka cave worries) were only adding to the mix, he smiled in return. "I hope so too." Also, by the way, this whole situation was still confusing, but there was definitely something about having someone - anyone - pay this sort of attention to him and look at him and smile at him like that too. Abra was someone who hated drawing attention to himself, but usually from a lot of people at once and almost always because he was afraid it was the negative sort of attention. But this??? It wasn't such a bad feeling... except that it wasn't quite the sort of feeling that it seemed Zita was hoping to evoke. Because reasons.

He just... didn't mention those reasons. Not yet. It wasn't really the appropriate moment. Or something.

With the lesson underway, Abra kept quiet, his mind still on the thing with the cave the cave as well as the whole Zita situation. Even though they were expected to take notes, he left his parchment and quill in his bag, mostly because his eyes and his brain worked badly enough in a well lit room in the middle of the day that trying to write anything down out here would be a complete waste of time. He'd just ask Derf or Junia if he could use their notes later, maybe. If he remembered.

But that didn't mean that he had completely checked out. Abra could still SEE the bats, and so he could, at the very least, try to guess which LOOKED like they might be magical and which probably weren't. His textbook was in his bag which sat at his feet, and their actual proper names were in there, but......... no. Just no.

Okay. Bats. So... from what Abra had gathered about magical versus mundane comparisons, the magical variety of ANYTHING always seemed to be the more colourful - he noticed these things. Because of this, he immediately hedged his bets on the green-skinned bat and the light-blue skinned bat both being magical. The third, fourth, and fifth bats were all more earthy sort of colours, so they were probably the mundane ones, except that Abra had his doubts about the big one. Sometimes 'magical' also meant 'bigger'. It was all guesswork, and all based on the simplest of logic, but... well, he supposed he'd find out eventually if he was right.

Without writing anything down, Abra's observations were over in practically no time in tall, so he had plenty of opportunity to notice that Zita had gone and shifted even closer to him where they sat. He... wasn't sure what to make of it. Was this, like... another weird sort of flirting thing? Genuine worry about the bats in the cave? Something entirely different?

As he tried to work it out, another thought suddenly occurred to Abra, a thought that immediately fed the fires of anxiety inside him. He bit down hard on his lip and hugged himself tighter to guard himself against both the cold and his thoughts. Looking at the bats again, Abra stared intently at them, suddenly looking more attentive than he ever did in any class ever, really trying to focus on the creatures in order to maybe take his mind off of his unpleasant (and incorrect) suspicions.

... Maybe he would try to take some notes after all. They might help, especially as, being so adamant about not going into the cave, he was likely to miss out on the practical part of the lesson which was usually the part where he learned the most stuff.

Merlin. There were just too many things to think about today. Abra thought his head might explode at any possible moment.

It was the one that warned of poison that held her attention most. In any other setting, Jessa might've been all over these bats. Actually...scratch that. "Professor, can I borrow some of these after the lesson?" If she ever made it to the end of the lesson. Anything could happen between now and the time they were required to head into the cave.

The cave she was meant to stop thinking about but as it turned out it wasn't possible to do so. That cave.

The cave that seemed to be creeping closer everytime she looked away to assess the bats. Only thing to be done about that....was probably stop turning away to look at the bats but even with her gaze FIXED on it, the bloody thing just seemed to be creeping closer and closer. Or maybe it was her drifting closer to the cave (not likely). At this point, it was getting a little hard to tell.

Distractedly, Jessa scribbled down her findings, not at all as focused on the lesson she she could otherwise have been. This was hard and she didn't see it getting any easier as the lesson progressed.

Could they leave now?

She wasn't moving from her spot and she wasn't aware of Abey being uncomfortable if he was. Her mind was not on flirting, or his cute face, or even Derf and trying to get so sort of emotion out of him being close to Abey, no, right now she was focusing on those creatures that could fly and she felt her heart racing a bit. Z was a girl that loved mud, she loved gooey things, she wasn't one of those girls that couldn't get her hands dirty, though she'd never show it at this point in time, she loved that stuff. She also loved most creatures, especially the fun cute fluffy ones, but there were two things that Zita Valla was just terrified of bats and flying.

This was not the way she wanted to be in front of the class, nor in front of certain people in this class, but right now she was frozen to her spot and staring at those rats with wings. What if one of them were vampire bats, she knew they weren't real vampires, but vampire bats were a real thing and she wasn't going to find out if they really bit people or not.

Her hand went up and she looked at the professor, "Professor... I... I think I need to go back to the castle. I... " her eyes swept the area with the other students she didn't want to say she was afraid, no she didn't want that to be what she was seen as, "I don't think it's light enough to show how amazing I look."

Was her hands trembling a bit? Yes, they might have been.

It was a good thing he had brought his textbook with him. He was going to need it.

And speaking of which... "Not really. But every textbook has an index, yeah?" Which is where he would be looking soon. Time to do some scribbling.

He scanned the lineup, just trying to get some initial impressions. Bat, bat.. still a bat. Yeah, helpful. Okay that blue one? The one that stunned? Screamed magical. Had to be. He scribbled it down. Hema-what? How do you even say that? Not that it mattered much. It sounded sort of like that thing he had removed as a little kid. A hematoma. Big nasty blood clot on his forearm that wasn't going away like the doctor has said it might. That hema-whatsit word, gotta mean blood. What types of bats.. Oh duh.

Bats! Not exactly Vivian's favourite creature to discuss about, but nevertheless it was a different topic. Which meant she had at least a reason to stay awake. Also, it would keep her interested enough to pay attention and take done notes too. However, now they were supposed to identify five bats and write those down on a parchment. Not a problem, definitely. She did study a bit about them for her OWLs. She'd have forgotten a couple of them by now, but she hoped not.

...

Five bats? But, but there were only four? Vivian made a face as she scribbled on her parchment that perhaps the Professor was joking until she eyed a few of her classmates who were... peering at the tree limb. What were they looking at? There didn't seem to be anything on there, to be honest. The Slytherin was a bit confused

Oh! Oh... that was really tiny. But it amazed the blond at how small it could be. Vivian scribbled on her notes and took notice of the small bat's physical appearance, as well as the other bats. At least she didn't struggle much with pointing out the details of the rest as they weren't as small as the fifth bat. Vivian was positive about the vampire bat because the hematophagous trait was quite the giveaway. The fruit bats, she was sure she'd seen a couple of them around Hogwarts so they weren't unfamiliar. The other bats, however, she had to consult her textbook for.

They could compare answers, right?

1. Yellow eyes, green skin, poisonous - Magical. MORTIS BAT
2. Green eyes, pale blue skin, can stun - Obviously magical. What kind of mundane bat has the ability to stun people? SPECTRE BAT
3. No eyes, brown fur, about 4 inches big, hematophagous (aka blood sucker) - Non-magical. VAMPIRE BAT. Duh.
4. A foot long, brown eyes, brown fur, black wings - Non-magical. Seen loads of these here at Hogwarts. FRUIT BAT.
5. ....??? Where is the bat? Super small, black eyes, rusty-coloured fur, pig snout - Non-magical. Cutie. Can I have one?

Anytime Jessa asked to 'borrow' a creature made him incredibly nervous. He didn't like some of the experiments she did, but at least he had a good answer for her this time. "Sorry, but these lovely creatures have to go back to their owner and the bats in the cave are off-limits to students without my supervision." He knew she wouldn't like that answer at all, but he didn't want these bats bothered. They were close to being endangered and they had the biggest population in Scotland in this one cave.

Another question from Zita? Interesting.

Tristan knew of Zita's personality, and this request almost made him snort. In fact he was so close to it he had to cough to not snort. "Sorry, darling but no. You have to stay here even if there isn't enough light to show how amazing you look." Though he had a feeling that wasn't the real problem and she was just trying to save face and pretend she wasn't scared.

Those trembling hands weren't fooling him.

After answering those few questions, he checked his watch. They still had a few more minutes, and it seemed as if most of the students were still trying to find answers. "You have a few more minutes to work on this. If you need help please ask away!" He continued to walk around the semi-circle looking over student shoulders.

"By the way, I will be collecting your work. So, please make sure you are writing your answers down!" He didn't look at anyone specifically when saying this but he wanted to make sure that they knew he was collecting this for a grade.

OOC: You are all doing amazing! Keep it up! Don't forget to write down if you think they are magical or non-magical!!

We will be moving on in 24 to 48 hours depending on post activity.

Okay honestly the first one had to be magical as well. Green skin and yellow eyes were just too strange. But those last two he was going to guess normal. Scribble scribble. Well, actually maybe that one with the super long wings. Were they magically large? Finn scratched that one out for now.

The fifth one was absolutely tiny. He had to get up and go look at it, at least for a second. Hopefully no one would mind him blocking their view; it would only be momentary. Black eyes, orangey-brown body, looks like it ran into a window.

It was time for some quality page-flipping in his textbook to look for some names. May as well start with the poor face smasher. Finn located the word 'bat' in the index and turned the pages accordingly. He skimmed for sizes, as that was likely to be the easiest way to find it. Sure enough, there was one that said it was 1-2 inches with a pig snout nose! A Kitti's Hog-Nose? He hadn't seen anything better, so he may as well try.

“Professor Wayland says we’re not going to see any unicorns today but that’s alright.”

Night had heard Rylee talking about how she wished they'd be studying unicorns, and how she would accept everything the same way either way, as being really cute.

Night didn't know the other first year at all, but she liked her philosophy.

On the other hand, she was now sure she didn't know anything about the bats, except maybe the vampire bat. And there were a couple species she hadn't even written anything about. Sigh. At least she would learn something in this class. Unlike potions, where she felt that the professor didn't really teach.

Good golly these kids were smart. At least that’s what she was sticking with. Otherwise, it would mean that she was simply not any good at Care of Magical Creatures. She felt as if she had been looking from bat to textbook, back to bat, then textbook for HOURS. She couldn’t figure out why she was having such a hard time figuring out what the different bats were. “I have the same book, right?” she asked those sitting around her. Obviously she did since it was the book they had been using all year.

Emmalyn further studied the bats one last time and jotted down her final conclusions on her parchment before time ran out.

SPOILER!!: Shera and professor <3

Because of course the really long word just meant 'feeds on blood'. Why wouldn't it mean that? And why couldn't they just say feeds on blood the same way they wrote ability to stun?

With Daehyun helping her in this section because she was still too slow she didn't have to worry too much about four of the bats, just quickly copying down his notes and hoping Professor Wayland would understand that she really was trying? And she was going to try even harder for when they did the next step!

Daehyun's eyes flew up when he noticed professor Wayland had heard him, but beamed at the man nevertheless. Then a larger grin spread across his lips when he'd noticed Shera jotting down what he'd written, making a mental note to show her everything about the bats in front of them that he had in his bestiaries.

SPOILER!!: Notes
1. Yellow eyes, green skin, poisonous !! - Mortis bat - magical
2. Green eyes, pale blue skin, stuns !! - Spectre bat - magical
3. Black eyes, brown fur, 4 inches, hematophagous !! - vampire bat - non-magical
4. Brown eyes, brown fur, black wings, 1 foot - Flying fox ??? - non-magical
5. Black eyes, reddish-brown fur, pig-like snout, tiny - bumblebee bat - non-magical

Using his pinkie finger as a bookmark for the page on which the Flying fox bat was, Daehyun flipped a bit more while muttering to Shera, "I'm not sure about the large one... it's classified as a megabat for sure," so no need to search among the other categories. "I think I'll leave it like this," he finally declared, scratching off the question marks he'd written next to it.

Leaning closer to Shera and lowering his voice so that hopefully only she would hear, he asked, "You think he'd let us pet them after class?" Though he ended up staring at Shera's hair, which seemed to defy gravity more so than on other days, and thought about the myth of bats getting tangled into people's hair.

... better keep and eye out for that.

HOLY SAFARI BATMAN!

That transition of throne into intro'ing the feature creature of the hour was impressive, but nothing compared to actually seeing them, to which the GryffindorAce leaned forward most eagerly. Oh so they have to figure out which of those are magical and which werent? Is that even possible? Bats dont like divulging their true identities yknow. Harhar.

SPOILER!!: Notes
Quote:
1) One bat had yellow eyes and green skin, and just above it was a sign that said, 'Do Not Disturb: Poisonous.'

2) Another bat had green eyes, pale blue skin, and a sign that said, 'Do Not Disturb: Ability to Stun,' above it.

3) The next bat had black eyes, brown fur, it was about 4 inches big and had a sign that said 'Hematophagous,' above it.

4) The fourth bat was about a foot long, much longer than the others, had Brown eyes, brown fur and black wings.

5) The fifth and final bat was hanging from the thinnest point of the limb, and was so tiny it was difficult to see. It may have been an inch or so in size with black eyes, reddish-brown fur, and pig-like snout.

Hurriedly scribbling his notes down, he approached the bats and started observing them. He could smell that distinctive guano-esque perfume that they known for, so tryiiiing not to breathe as he stared at the creatures for long periods of time. Regardless of how they smell, he found bats to be very fascinating flying creatures and in some ways is more impressed with them than birds. Nothing beats an Abraxan though.

The last two he immediately identified as those with closer association with those in the Muggle world, given that their hotels are nested in areas where these bats are quite the tourist attractions. The first two he was vaguely familiar with, but given that his mother didnt allow him near them much in his youth he could fathom a good educated guess.

The third bat gave him pause. This specie was also closely associated with tourist-y areas of the Muggle world, but he has seen these being sold along Wizarding markets as well. He was never quite sure if these bats straddle the fine line between magical and non-magical, kind of like how a Squib is.

Welp, in any case, he's quickly scribbled down his notes beside the ones he made earlier

SPOILER!!: notes

Bel was having no luck with her textbook and so far she'd still only written down the last two bats. Looking around made it clear almost everyone knew or had figured out all of 'em. And she had........ brought the wrong textbook. It was one of her Australian care of magical creatures books. Plenty of bunyips, dropbears, muldjewangks, and billywigs, even a few bats that clearly weren't the kind being displayed in front of her, but definitely creatures from the Southern hemisphere.

Whoops.

She looked up at the professor and made an awkward face. Soooo that would be... a fail grade? 2 out of 5 bats only?
