Default CoMC Lesson 1: Gone Batty!

It was a nice and cool October evening, but not cold enough to need a sweater yet. There was a soft glow of light in the sky and the sun had just dipped below the horizon; it was officially twilight. Tristan usually set up his lessons in front of the barn, but this one was set a little further into the forest than usual, but not too far. He had set up in a little clearing just outside of a cave. Nothing that would cause them harm lived here, but he knew a cave may be a little scary for some students.

As usual, there was a semi-circle of hay bales set out for the students, and his trusty blackboard was just to the right of the cave entrance. There was no evidence of what kind of creature they would be working with today. He liked keeping them surprised! To the left of the cave there was a large Adirondack Chair made out of hay bales, and that was where Professor Wayland could be found; sipping his Chai Tea from a mug shaped like a Niffler, waiting patiently for his students to arrive.

OOC: Welcome to the first CoMC Lesson of the term! Though this is our first lesson together, this is not the first CoMC lesson of the year, so please keep that in mind! Please make sure you take a gander at the CoMC Rules while waiting. Class will start in 24 hours. Class has begun please jump in!

It got a little easier to relax again when more people arrived, especially more people that Abra knew well. Naturally, he was relieved to see Junia and matched her smile with an equally genuine one of his own. He was a little disappointed that she didn't come and sit right next to him, but also remembered that he, too, tended to try to avoid gravitating RIGHT to her side always in case he became a bother or got in the way of her friend time. She was nearby, and that was plenty comforting really, actually.

Seeing Derf arrive, Abra naturally returned his wave. He knew that they BOTH knew the IMPLICATIONS of this whole cave thing but neither of them really needed to say anything to know that... they both understood the potential issue here.

Funny that he should waving at Derf just when a familiar voice spoke up beside him. Abra turned automatically to look at Zita, already starting to feel a little squirmy. He'd always sort of liked Zita from what he knew of her; she was nice, and she'd also invited him to her pool party over summer despite the fact he'd not been at school when she'd initially given out invitations. Needless to say, he'd heard absolutely nothing about the... well... Slytherin drama that had gone down after he'd left last year. What he DID know (and he knew it very well) was that Zita had kissed Derf at the Start-of-Term Feast, right in front of everyone, and it sort of... well...

Yeah.

Before he could even start to think of how to respond to Zita, she...

"Oh!"

Instinctively, Abra reached out to try and stop her from falling, not really registering that it hadn't been quite as genuine as it had looked (at least from his perspective). He didn't get very far in his endeavours, though, because suddenly she had hold of his arm and was giggling and was literally RIGHT THERE. A strange prickling started up on the back of Abra's neck, one he couldn't quite understand but that seemed to have everything to do with how close Zita was to him and the attention she was paying him, but wasn't unaccompanied with the flustered feeling or swooping sensation in his stomach that he had known in the past. But... it was still a good sort of feeling?

"Oh, no... that's totally okay," he replied, once Zita was situated properly on her hay bale. He had absolutely definitely positively noticed her arm brushing against him too. Without a doubt.

Abra opened his mouth to say something else to her then, but abruptly closed it again when he realised he didn't really know what to say. For a moment he just sort of stared at Zita, and then he blinked, and then blinked again, and then looked away, thoroughly confused about what was happening here. The prickly-neck sensation was still present, and that, combined with the chill that was already starting to take hold of him, set off an unmistakable shiver.

Then he glanced towards the cave, thought about all manner of things, and he shivered again.

Jessa eyed the dark and possibly winding cave for only a moment before taking a seat far on the other side. She wouldn't even sit near it while she could help it.

"I thought I was looking forward to the lesson, I'm not sure I am anymore but I still thought I'd tell you." Because more often than not, Jessa didn't regret attending Care of Magical Creatures class.
Soon enough his first student made it into the semi-circle, and of course it was Jessa. He smiled, and was kinda confused about the falter in her greeting, and decided it was probably nothing. "Evening, Jessa!" Her next comment, however, brought a frown to his handsome face. What could possibly make Jessa change her mind that quickly?

"Why aren't you looking forward to it anymore?" There wasn't anything dangerous in this neck of the woods. The idea of the cave possibly being scary completely slipped his mind.

"Good evening, Emmalyn!" Tristan said with a grin, taking a quick sip of his Chai Tea.

Joy. Rapture. Zoryn was here.

"Hello, Zoryn." He said with a small smile. This particular Gryffindor had an affinity for driving him crazy. He raised an eyebrow at her when she was suddenly serious and asking about his health. He sighed and rolled his eyes.

Not this again. "I am actually feeling wonderful and quite fit. Thank you for asking." He gave her another small grin before taking another sip from his mug.

That's where the creatures are going to come out of, right?" Please, Merlin, let it be mooncalves, or nocturnal flobberworms, or anything that meant they could stay put.
"Hello, Abraham." He said slightly confused at another falter in a greeting. What was the problem? Seriously? Was his hair looking weird? Did he have something on him?

And then the answer came in a question from Abraham. The cave was the issue. "Not to worry, this is not a very large cave. It's more like one large room and the creatures that we are dealing with wont harm you." he had been to this cave by himself many times since he became the professor here.
He knew it like the back of his hand. There was nothing in that cave that would hurt them. They would just have to wait and see.

"G'day professor." Bel greeted and sat herself near the front.

She wanted a good view of this cave.
"G'day to you, Bel!" Tristan said with a wink and a grin before taking another sip from his Niffler mug. Thought the chair was comfortable it was starting to get itchy. Cause...hay.

Hope this cave is significantly less scary than the one in DADA last term.” he didn’t want Professor Wayland to think he was being rude, “I dangled from the cliff in DADA last term, don’t need that this term.” he mumbled.
"Evening Patrick!" Taken aback by that remark, Tristan had no clue that Professor Hirsch had taken them to a cave last term. "Dangle?! What?" The shocked expression quickly left his face, "Not to worry, Patrick, this is a very safe cave." The thought that any of his students had been dangling from a cliff in a cave worried him.

Okay, probably not killed. But to be safe, she was going to stay away from Gryffindors. "Hi, Professor," she said warily as she sat near the back.
"Hi, Natalie!" He said trying to sound enthusiastic. He hated the idea that so many students were subjected to a dangerous cave last year and that seemed to be the issue they were having.

He smiled and lifted his gloved hand in the quickest hello to the professor and, then, found a seat.
Tristan gave Alessandro a smile and a nod. His left hand was currently occupied with his mug, and his right with his wand, so waving either one could cause a raucous at the moment.

She picked a hay bale at random and sat down, enjoying the atmosphere.
"Hello, Hanna!" Finally a happy student! Or was she just pretending? He wasn't sure anymore. He sighed and smiled at the young girl hoping she was genuinely excited for the lesson.

He was sure that would put a damper on her excitement but he couldn't disturb the Unicorns as much as he was sure the students would want him to. "Oh, that sounds fun! I don't have one of those! "Hello, Juni!" He said with a nod. Hoping that there were only a couple more after her.

Uh guess he will find a seat

.....did he mention he didnt like sitting on haybales.

Give him normal seats, please.
"Hello, Théo!" Tristan called back with a smile.

"Hello, Jessi!" Tristan gave her a smile. He was pretty sure she was the last student, so he quickly drank the last bit of his tea before standing up.

When he was sure the last student had found a seat, he quickly stood up, and with a flick of his wand the hay bales that made up his Adirondack Chair disappeared to reveal a large floating tree limb with five different creatures hanging upside down from it. With another flick of his wand, the tree limb floated closer to the center of the semi-circle so that the creatures were completely visible.

What were these creatures exactly? Well...."Today we will be working with Bats! I am sure some of you are wondering why Bats, they aren't magical! But I promise you, you are mistaken." He said with a grin.

"Now, before we get into the meat of the discussion, I want you to look at these creatures and on a piece of parchment, identify the five different bats in front of you and determine whether they are in the magical or non-magical families of bats." He levitated the bats into the center of the circle, and with a click of his wand it very slowly began to rotate so that everyone could see each individual bat.

One bat had yellow eyes and green skin, and just above it was a sign that said, 'Do Not Disturb: Poisonous.' Another bat had green eyes, pale blue skin, and a sign that said, 'Do Not Disturb: Ability to Stun,' above it. The next bat had black eyes, brown fur, it was about 4 inches big and had a sign that said 'Hematophagous,' above it. The fourth bat was about a foot long, much longer than the others, had Brown eyes, brown fur and black wings. The fifth and final bat was hanging from the thinnest point of the limb, and was so tiny it was difficult to see. It may have been an inch or so in size with black eyes, reddish-brown fur, and pig-like snout.

"One rule: Please do not touch the bats. You may begin." Tristan grinned, and backed out of the circle to walk around all of the students in case anyone had a question.

OOC: OH MY GOODNESS! I am amazed at the amount of people here and so excited to have you all! Class has officially started so please keep the chatter to a minimum, if you haven't posted your charrie in here and want to, please feel free to jump right in and pretend as though they've been here the entire time. Please remember that if you show up late there will be IC consequences. This is your mini activity so post as many times as you want! Get creative with it! If you need help or aren't sure about a couple of those you can shoot me a PM! A hint, make sure you use all your RESOURCES and TEXTBOOKS The activity is pretty simple. Identify each bat and determine which are magical and which are non-magical!

Emmalyn pulled out her books and began searching for what types of bats they were. She remembered reading a bit about them a few weeks ago, but she was having a hard time recalling all of the details. The first two were easy for her to identify because they were so unique. She quickly jotted down their names and began looking for the other three types.

Emmalyn glanced around and wondered if they were allowed to work with a partner. It would make the task much easier. Plus, she was hoping if they all identified them quickly, they would have a chance to go inside of the cave. Oh how she wanted to go inside. She had no fear of bats and, with the lesson topic being what it was, she was sure it was full of bats.

Slate was busy squinting at the Professor. Why did it look like he was drinking out of a niffler? That was a little disturbing. Especially in the dark. It took him entirely too long to figure out that it was a cup and not an actual niffler. Crisis averted.

Just as soon as he'd figured that out though, it seemed like the class moved right along. Now he was squinting at bats. Bats. Near a cave. Yup. That made sense. Apparently some bats were poisonous. That, he didn't care to know. Of course, he had enough sense to know that most brightly colored animals were poisonous. He also had enough sense to run away from a green bat. He was pretty sure it was a hard coded human trait to run away from bats in the wild, especially ones that were colored.

He idly flipped through his textbook scanning the pages for the word bat and the word poison. Mortis bat? That was probably it. That sounded like a boring name. Why wasn't it called a poison bat? They named the poisonous frogs 'Poison frogs'.

Katy was no expert on bats, although she looked at each of the species with interest. They were sort of cute, she supposed, although not something she'd ever think if one was flapping at her face in the middle of the night.

Or a cave, come to think of it. She pulled her hair back away from her face and tucked it up into a neat ballerina bun. No bats in her hair, thanks, Professor.

Now, then, what did she know about bats? Not much, but she knew languages and Hematophagous meant that the bat fed on blood. Hemato and all that. So, by extension... she jotted 'VAMPIRE BLEH BLEH BLEH' into her notebook. Very mature seventh year here, folks.

When he saw the cave, Maxton's imagination had run wild. He'd been expecting some kind of cave dwelling troll or maybe an acromantula. He hadn't been expecting BATS. He'd seen bats at the muggle zoo with his family... Wasn't this subject Care of Magical Creatures?

It was as if Professor Wayland read his mind because the teacher said something about being mistaken. Okay, this sounded interesting!

When the bats were levitated towards the center of the circle, Max shuffled forward on his hay bale in order to get a better view. They were kinda cute. Especially the teeny tiny one.

So they just had to write down what species the different bats were?

He had once read a comic book about a vampire bat, he wondered if there was one of those. Maxton pulled out his textbook and began scanning the pages.

Derf's eyes were still resting on Natalie as Liam and Cameron joined her, and then he tore his bright blues away to lay elsewhere. Couple of knots forming in his stomach making it kinda hard to keep looking there. But those knots were nooooooothing compared to what came next.

Zita Valla was sitting next to Abey. Heart drumming in his chest, Derf felt his palms begin to sweat. Not because of jealousy or anything even remotely resembling that - though there was no regret that he had NOT say beside his Gryffindor - but because Zita did not know Abey like he did and her presence, her intimidating and demanding presence, was the LAST thing that the Gryffindor needed when there was already so many other triggers into play. His gaze shifted to Junia and was practically PLEADING with her to do, well...he wasn't sure WHAT but SOMETHING in case things happened and, well, he was on the other end of the semi circle and couldn't really leap into action and get to Abey's side immediately. Derf also gave Zita a bit of a sad look, sorta like a kicked cruppy, to not try to pull Abey into her games. He KNEW she was a better person than that and had seen it.

Not to mention, well, he was also a little embarrassed for her. For reasons.

Ruffling his hair, his attention settled on Diandra beside him. "Hey," he smiled, hand still ruffling his hair but eventually getting it back into his lap and his face dropping a bit more when Professor Wayland said there would be no Thereos this evening. "Theroes is one of the centaurs who lives in the Forest," he explained to her, glancing around juuuuuuuuust in case he decided to pay them all a visit anyway. "He taught Divination here once, mum said. We're friends." At least that was what the delusional Hufflepuff thought.

And there was the confirmation that they WOULD be going into the cave...so naturally his eyes went back to Abey and Jessa, lingering there for a painful moment before the professor brought out bats. Levitated them out, rather, and for a brief instant Derf found the practice soooooooomewhat inhumane. But this WAS Professor Wayland so naturally that did not compute.

Derf was quick to write down the descriptions of the bats on a piece of parchment, Mortis Bat and Spectre Bat and Vampire Bat being quickly and easily identifiable - even without the little labels the professor had provided on them. "Loads of fruit bats around the grounds too," he informed Diandra as he added that to his running list. "Ballycastle Bats use one as their mascot. Used to think a vampire bat was more suitable though," he added, nodding his head towards another one of the bats, the one with the Hematophagous tag.

Bel almost fell off her bale in eagerness. Bats were wicked cool! There were plenty back home in 'stralia. And sure enough one of the displayed bats was one of the CUTEST kinds of bats you could imagine. FLYING FOXES or fruit bats if ya wanted a different name for them. How cute though? Look at its little face and big brown eyes. She'd rescued a few in her time back home. He might've been the biggest of the bats they were being shown, but still definitely the cutest. And that little tiny one? Oooooo she knew what THAT was too. A bumblebee bat! And that one had a different name as well, Kitti's hog-nosed bat. She'd seen them at a muggle conservation park back home. And both of the two bats she was most drawn to weren't magical either.

... as for the other ones.... magical ones?.... ummmmmm. Not so much. In fact she had no idea what any of those three were. Where was her textbook? She shuffled her parchment out of the way and began flipping through her textbook trying to work out what the first three bats were.

Abey was sweet, which Z already knew this from the summer party and jus other times since first term, but she hadn't ever been this close to the boy before today and well it wasn't a bad place to be really. She smiled as she found herself on her hay and glanced at him a few times a little pink forming in her cheeks. Though she was looking at Abey she did feel the eyes of others, possibly Derfs on her. This was exactly what she wanted and she just kept on smiling. "I hope we get to see something cute today and not something crazy."

What they were about to see though wasn't what Z was hoping for and she sort of jumped when the professor brought them out. BATS??? Nope, she was done, she wasn't about to get up close and personal with anything that swooped down in your hair at night. No thank you, those rats with wings could stay exactly where they were and she could stay happily on this hay next to Abey. She even moved back a little closer to him out of instinct and not in one of her games.

Thank Merlin they weren't going to touch them. "Professor won't they be mad if we go in there cave and try to swoop at us?" She wasn't testing the bat king in that cave he could have his kingdom.

So, apparently there were magical bats as well as the regular ones. That was cool. Of course, the Care of Magical Creatures textbook was the one Night had spent the most time over, so she wasn't really that surprised. But honestly, this was cool. Well, except for the green and blue ones. Those must be of the magical variety, and she was slightly uncomfortable with them (as she was with everything these days. Yes, Diane had taught her what to expect, but could she really be expected to not be shocked and alarmed by almost everything?)

Well, the blue one was easy, that was a blue electric, or so she thought. The green one looked like an alien, so maybe she should call it that? The brown one...it had the word "Hematophagous," and she knew hematology was the study of blood. Maybe this was a bloodsucking bat? She'd heard of vampire bats, and they were solely non magical (she was pretty sure anyway). Better start taking notes.

Quote:
Notes CoMC: Bats
Blue electric bat? - magical, can stun
Alien bat? - magical, poisonous
Vampire bat - non-magical, drinks blood hematophagous

Natalie was very pleased when her brother and Cam arrived and sat next to her. Those were her people and she was happy they were there. Then, she caught Derf's eye as he came into class and, naturally, smiled back at him. Her tummy did a little tumble, pleased that he was giving him his signature dorky smile, considering all that had happened between them in recent times. That made her feel better.

The smile soon faded, though, as she caught sight of Zita... basically falling totally intentionally onto Abey's lap. Natalie's eyes rolled SO HARD that they ALMOST flew out of her head.

If they were gonna find out if bats were going to attack them, Natalie wanted Zita to go into the cave first.

Getting out her notebook as class began, Natalie started jotting down some notes on the bats and what she knew about the ones up there. Ability to stun, poisonous, hairy, big... Natalie pursed her lips and looked over at Cam and Liam. "Did you guys bring your textbook?" she whispered. Because.. she didn't. And maybe they could work together.

The last three had her stumped. Sure, they looked different and they obviously had different names, but she couldn’t figure out which one was which. Emmalyn decided to focus on the black eyed, brown fur covered bat that had the Hematophagous sign above it. It was smaller than the fourth bat, but larger than the fifth bat. She made notes on her parchment and continued to search her book.

Quote:
Spectre bat: Pale blue skin, green eyes. Keen hearing and sense of smell. Is able to stun a human.
Mortis bat: Yellow eyes, green skin. Keen sense of smell. Do not awaken during daylight. Likes to be in the dark
Bat #3: medium sized. Black eyes, brown fur, hematophagous???
Bat #4: large bat. Brown eyes, brown fur, black wings.
Bat #5: tiny. Can’t see color of eyes, reddish-brown fur, funny nose.

“Hemo...no, hematophagous. What does that mean?” she raised her hand and asked loud enough for the professor and other older students to hear. Maybe if she could figure out what that word was, she could narrow down which type of bat it was. She was fairly certain that medium sized brown bat wouldn’t be an answer the professor would be pleased with.

“You’re welcome, sir!” Though she was still VERY skeptical. Zor would just have to keep an eye out. Y’know, make sure that he wasn’t lying to her. It’d be best if they reported the signs early on so that Truebridge could be on the lookout too. It’d be HORRIBLE if they guy just, like, died right in the middle of a feast or something.

Zoryn listened to Jessa, not at all being able to relate…. But trying to be super supportive. “I hope so too,” she didn’t actually care if they had to go in the cave, but it looked like Jessa didn’t want to go in. So y’know, if Jessa didn’t wanna do it, maybe Zoryn didn’t either.

Her attention then turned to Mel who had just walked by and addressed her. Huh? “Oh, ‘cause old people have loads of health issues,” it was a fact. And saintly Zor was just trying to look out for Professor Wayland. It’s best to catch on to the signs early on, y’know? She was doing him a solid.

Anyways, Zoryn was unfortunately highly uninterested in the bats that they were supposed to identify. She did, however, open her book up and pretend to use it as a resource as she looked back and forth between the bats and the descriptions on the page. Honestly, she was just trying to kill some time so that when they did move on to practical stuff, she wouldn’t have to worry about writing anything down. this was all suuuuuUUUUUuuuper boring, like, no offense. Taking notes and stuff wasn’t something Zoryn did very often. Professor Wayland could ask Derf. He was a prime witness.

Okaaaay.

Seeing as they were having a lesson right outside of a CAVE, Isabel wasn't in the least bit surprised to hear that they would be focusing on bats; they kind of were THE creature that she thought of when it came to said places.

This kind of mini activity wasn't really her thing, since it was more fun to be active than it was to write things down, but fortunately this didn't require too much work. Hopefully the main activity would be a lot more interesting, but then it generally was when it came to this subject; why it was one of her favourites. Maybe she had inherited the interest in magical creatures from her mother, as this had been her favourite lesson while attending Hogwarts.

Getting out a piece of paper, she began writing out the five different types of bats that they were being shown:

Quote:
BATS

Bat #1: Mortis Bat (green skin, yellow eyes, poisonous - MAGICAL)
Bat #2: Spectre Bat (pale blue skin, green eyes, can stun - MAGICAL)
Bat #3: Vampire Bat (brown fur, black eyes, drinks blood - NON-MAGICAL)
Bat #4: Fruit Bat (brown fur, brown eyes, black wings - NON-MAGICAL)
Bat #5: Bumblebee Bat (reddish-brown fur, black eyes, pig-like snout - NON-MAGICAL)
There. Done.

It was good to see Mel and Ace. It reminded her of fourth year but without all the tension between the three of them. The strange but also weirdly fun tension. Ahh fourth year. It had proved to be an eventful year. Perhaps fourth year was always eventful at Hogwarts....?

Now back to Professor Wayland who informed her that the tea he was so enjoying was chai tea. Delicious.

Mm... Yes...... she could totally go for a cup of that now. She was about to jokingly ask Professor Wayland if he had any spare tea lying around when he began the lesson. Ah so THAT's why they were near a cave. Bats... Maybe looking for a certain wealthy billionaire.... *COUGH COUGH* Vi was getting ahead of herself now and getting carried away. Merlin, she ought to get more sleep.

Now to the mini-activity... Sorting bats.. She eyed the bats and began making notes of what species they could possibly be.

"I'm great, thank you, sir." Although that could change depend on what they're going to do today. And what animals live inside that cave. Did the Professor just winked at her? He did. If she's not in class right now she probably squee but unfortunately she's in class right now so no squee-ing.

BATS??????!!!! THEY'RE WORKING WITH BATS?????!!!!

o________________O

Why can't they work with cute and fluffy animals? Why it has to be bats? Alyce was trying to hide her disappointment but failed miserably. She never liked bats. They're scary, not to mention they sound weird too. She almost screamed when the Professor brought the bats into the center of the circle.

You can do this! Is not like she has to touch one, right?

She looked over the each bats carefully and tried to identify them. They looked the same to her. Hmmm...She took a closer look but still maintained her distance.

SPOILER!!: Notes

Bat 1 : yellow eyes, green skin, poisonous = Poison Ivy bat? Magical, maybe?
Bat 2 : green eyes, pale blue skin, ability to stun = Stupefy bat? Definitely magical.
Bat 3 : black eyes, brown fur, 4 inches tall, Hematophagous = Vampire bat. Non magical
Bat 4 : a foot long, much longer than the others, Brown eyes, brown fur, black wings = Regular bat. Non magical
Bat 5 : super tiny, difficult to see. black eyes, reddish-brown fur, pig-like snout = Dwarf bat. Non magical

Hattie frowned a little as she looked at the rotating bats. She didn't like that. Creatures should be in their natural habitat, and not being showed and rotated just for their learning. The blonde was pretty sure that there were images of bats in their textbooks. Of course she knew it was much easier to learn from seeing the actual thing, but this just did not seem very humane to her. She didn't like it, and she was beginning to wonder why she had even come down here today. She did enjoy the lesson, but this just didn't seem right. Not to her anyway. But she would carry on. She was here after all, so she may as well get on with the task.

She began by writing her notes, paying attention to each bat in turn, and trying to note things down. The little labels helped, but she still wasn't so sure. So she was going to take her time. This wasn't her best lesson, so she wanted to be super sure about everything she wrote down. She hated being wrong, and so this was essential.

Just as she was starting to feel a bit invisible, considering for the most part nobody had acknowledged her presence aside from the simple smile and wave from Vi, and the sneaking suspicion that she was responsible for Rylee’s questions about unicorns, Stasya was saved the disappointment over having ventured out here even though she was scared of the forest and getting lost again (why hadn’t she told anyone about her fear again?). The little side!hug had been welcome, and she’d turned to look at Liv with a grin, realizing she was awfully taller than she’d been before Liv had gone off to America. “Hi.” She was perfectly okay with the idea of being a favorite, and also, having her there made her feel a whole lot safer.

Even though she’d also trusted Professor Wayland not to let her get hurt, and she’d turned her grin to him as he’d returned her greeting and began the lesson. No unicorns, and no centaur, but the little trick of disappearing his hay chair and having the branch!perch of the bats appear was kind of cool. Plus, it took all of her self-control not to approach the bats and try to pet the tiny one. The warning was going to be listened to, but that didn’t change that she kind of wanted to add that bat to her small menagerie, along with the goat she still hadn’t acquired as well as her very own winged horse. She thought Dobby might enjoy a bat!friend after all.

Instead of asking about how she might acquire a tiny bat of her own, she took out a piece of parchment and quickly copied down the information on the cards provided before starting to identify.

SPOILER!!: bat!info
Bat #1: yellow eyes, green skin, poisonous = Mortis Bat (magical, particularly hostile if bothered during the day)
Bat #2: pale blue skin, green eyes, ability to stun = Spectre Bat (magical, maybe ghost-related)
Bat #3: black eyes, brown fur, medium size, hematophagus (aka feeds on blood) = Vampire Bat (generally non-magical)
Bat #4: larger size, brown eyes, brown fur, black wings = Fruit Bat (non-magical, aka flying fox, relatively harmless because feeds on fruit or nectar)
Bat #5: tiny, black eyes, reddish-brown fur, pig-like snout = Bumblebee Bat (non-magical, also called Kitti’s hog-nosed bat, herbivorous)

Hanna was AMAZED when Professor Wayland's chair turned into a TREE! That was some amazing magic. Hanna wasn't even a muggle born, and she was gobsmacked every day with the use of magic. As the tree came closer, she was able to observe that there were creatures in it. It wasn't long until she saw they were BATS! Hanna thought bats were such cool creatures, and she was excited to be able to work with them. She hoped they would be able to handle them, too.

Listening to Professor Wayland's instructions, Hanna got up to peer closer at each bat. When looking at the second one, she saw the sign which said they were able to STUN humans! "Whoooaaaa," she said, jumping back. No thank you, she didn't fancy being stunned. Once she'd looked at the final bat, she went back to her spot, snatched some parchment out of her bag and used her textbook to lean on. She dipped her quill in the ink, without the care of tapping excess black ink back into the jar. No, she didn't have time. She needed to get her observations onto the paper NOW. A few bits of ink dripped; on her bag, her white socks, her robes... but she didn't care right now.

Bat 4: brown eyes and fur, black wings. HUGE! Fruit Bat. Non-magical!

Hanna drew some little pictures, which were almost stick-bat figures, and she only had black ink, and her quill was a bit scratchy when she tried to colour in the wings. But she had finished, and wasn't sure what to do. Her fingers were itching to pet them.

Bel was having no luck figuring out what the first three bats were, and sat flicking through pages trying to work it out. And what was hematawhateveritwas? Probably that would be a helpful thing to know. She blew a strand of her hair out of her face and kept flicking through the textbook.

And for the record? It was pretty hard not to get distracted by a) the cute bats and b) other stuff in the textbook. And OH she was itching to feed the flying fox. Honestly they were so cute when they were nomming bananas or grapes or the like. And what kind of bats were going to be in the cave? More fruit bats? Except... this was magical creatures, so it would probably be the other kinds of bats... the ones she couldn't identify, that were somewhere in her textbook.

Flip. Flip. Flip.

He'd seen Shera approach him, but before he could greet her, the girl had plopped onto the bale of hay where he was seated, and her head soon dropped to her knees. It soon struck him that it was one of those days, the very few times when he saw her in that sleepy state - he'd always thought of them as the days she recharged herself, and soon she'd be back to her energetic self.

Unsure of what to do, since he couldn't really poke her with a stick or anything of the sort, he'd settled for, "You okay?" he asked anyway, just in case she wasn't feeling well, as he leaned on his knees to mimic her position to be close enough to keep his voice down. Maybe she'd be sensitive to loud noises.

Daehyun's voice was oddly quiet, and Shera realised that he was probably trying to be nice because of now tired she was at the moment. She let out a groan that was meant to signify that she was in fact alright, before raising her arm to give her friend a thumbs up.

She just needed a pre-class nap. She was almost ready to go, feeling herself slowly coming back to life in her own head.

"Evening, Farah." Tristan said with a chuckle at the young girl wiggling her fingers at him. Was that a new thing; Wiggling your fingers while greeting people?

Joy.

"Good evening, Miranda! We definitely will do that." He said with an answering grin.

Tristan raised an eyebrow, "Good evening, Zarina! You will find out soon enough!" He said with a wink.

"Hello, Daisy! I am doing very good! How are you?" Tristan gave her gentle smile and a wink.

"Hello, Junia!" Tristan said with a smile that mimicked her own. Did they really think he would put them in danger? He sighed and waited for the next student to arrive.

"G'day to you, Bel!" Tristan said with a wink and a grin before taking another sip from his Niffler mug. Thought the chair was comfortable it was starting to get itchy. Cause...hay.

"Evening, Finn! I am quite relaxed, thank you!" Tristan said with a wink and grin at the young man.

"Good evening, Cassandra!" Tristan smiled and gave her a nod.

Tristan chuckled at that comment. "Good day, Katy. I don't invest in hay shares...we have a hay field. Remember the Mooncalves??" He said with a wink and smile.

"Hi, Natalie!" He said trying to sound enthusiastic. He hated the idea that so many students were subjected to a dangerous cave last year and that seemed to be the issue they were having.

Tristan gave Alessandro a smile and a nod. His left hand was currently occupied with his mug, and his right with his wand, so waving either one could cause a raucous at the moment.

"Hello, Hanna!" Finally a happy student! Or was she just pretending? He wasn't sure anymore. He sighed and smiled at the young girl hoping she was genuinely excited for the lesson.

"Good evening, Daehyun!" Tristan said with a smile. He also seemed excited...maybe it was only a few students that actually experienced the other cave. Hopefully that was the case.

"Good evening, Am--Night! Why thank you! It's one of my favorites!" Hopefully she didn't catch that fumble on her name.He knew she preferred Night, he was just so worried about the cave issue it was distracting him. "The mug is not a hint." He said with a wink and a grin. He wouldn't give her anymore details. They would all find out soon enough.

"Hello, Melbourne! I am so glad to hear it!" He said with a nod and grin. She had done very will with Darcy. He was very proud of her relationship with her Jarvey was wonderful.

"Evening, Head Boy." He said with a wink and a grin. He was very proud of Tenacious for making Head Boy. He was a wonderful Prefect and Tristan knew he would do great things as Head Boy.

"Hello, Alyce! Doing quite well, and yourself?" He asked with a grin. Though her next statement sounded more like a question than a compliment he smiled back and replied, "Why thank you! It's one of my favorites." He gave her a wink and awaited the next greeting.

"Good evening, Stasya!" Tristan smiled and took another sip of his tea.

Tristan chuckled as the young girl yawned. "Evening, Shera. I am sure the creatures we will be working with today will wake you right up!" He grinned and gave her a wink.

"Hello, Vi! I am doing very well, thank you for asking!" He looked down at his little Niffler and quickly back up to the young Gryffindor. "Oh, just some Chai tea." He said with a smile. It was his favorite.

"Evening, Captain!" Tristan called back to Skylar with a huge grin and a wink. Again, the curiosity of his drink. "Just some Chai tea." He raised his mug to her with a smile and took a sip of the warm sweet liquid.

Tristan smiled as the young Puff Prefect made his way over. "Evening, Derfael!" And of course it was followed by an odd question. Why would Thereos be joining them? "Not tonight." He said with a confused grin. "Thank you very much! It's my favorite." He said with a wink.

"Hello, Rylee!" He chuckled at her questions, "Possibly and no, unfortunately no Unicorns." He was sure that would put a damper on her excitement but he couldn't disturb the Unicorns as much as he was sure the students would want him to. "Oh, that sounds fun! I don't have one of those! You may have to get me one!!" He said jokingly with a chuckle.

"Good evening, Diandra." Tristan said with a gentle smile. He checked his watch; they would have to get going here soon.

"Good evening, Vivian!" Tristan gave her a smile and took a small sip of his tea. It was almost empty!

"Good evening, Zita, and that it is. Perfect weather." He said with a grin. It was very nice out tonight.

"Ah, thank you, Olivia! As do you! I don't know if i said this on the first day of class or not, but it is so good to have you back with us!" He gave her a gentle smile and a wink.

"Good evening, Hattie!" Tristan gave her a nod and a smile. Then looked passed her to see if anyone else was coming. He could see a couple more shadows moving about.

Tristan watched as Maxton made his way to the semi-circle without so much as a look towards him. No hello, or wave or smile.
He just sat down on a bale and looked around. He gave the young man a smile anyway.

"Good evening, Liam." He said with a smile, watching as the young man made his way to Natalie.

Tristan grinned, "Hello and thank you, Scarlett." Man he was getting a lot of compliments on his mug choice. He was cool with it...it was an awesome mug.

"Hi, Felicity." He said with a serene smile. She looked happy to be here, and that made him very happy.

"Hello, Dorian!" Tristan smiled and took another small sip hoping to save the last sip for the last student to arrive.

Tristam smiled, even though the young man was looking past him. He sighed, "Good evening, Cameron." He then looked past the young man to see exactly how many more students were coming. They were almost out of hay bales!

"Hello, Juni!" He said with a nod. Hoping that there were only a couple more after her.

You have roughly 48 to 72 hours depending on active posting.

And none too soon.

Professor Wayland was surprisingly chipper when it came to her almost falling asleep at the beginning of his classes. She was actually kind of glad that it was his class that she was exhausted for. She couldn't imagine that Professor Noble would take kindly to it.

"Your classes always wake me up, Professor," she commented, a yawn escaping her as she sat up straight again. Maybe it was the fact that he also seemed to have a high energy level that lead to hers spiking again. But she was getting close to actually being ready for this class. Not soon enough apparently as the lesson was starting.

Shera grabbed her quill as quickly as she could, folding her page so that she could write the description behind where she was going to eventually write the names of the bats.

SPOILER!!: Notes

Attributes:
Poisonous; yellow eyes, green skin
Ability to stun; green eyes, pale blue skin
Hematophagous; black eyes, brown fur; approx. 4 inches
Brown eyes, brown fur, black wings
Black eyes, reddish-brown fur, pig-like snout; approx. 1 inch

Now time to identify them all. But before she did. "Does anyone know what He-mat-o... eh, does anyone know what the long word is and how to say it?"

Good start, Shera.

She just needed a pre-class nap. She was almost ready to go, feeling herself slowly coming back to life in her own head.

Now time to identify them all. But before she did. "Does anyone know what He-mat-o... eh, does anyone know what the long word is and how to say it?"

Good start, Shera.

She was alright. As Shera showed him a half-hearted thumbs up, he knew it was just one of those days, so he would just let her be and pray that she'd be conscious enough to pay attention in class. Just enough to not get in trouble, the rest he could help her with.

Daehyun was almost bouncing on the bale of hay in excitement as he saw bats. How cute were they? He wanted to get up close and snuggle each - well, maybe not the poisonous one - but professor Wayland had told them not to, though he'd be lying if he said he wasn't already planning on staying after class to ask if he could touch them. With puppy eyes and all.

He had a hard time focusing on the professor's words, as he was too fascinated by the bats before their eyes, but he did process what they had to do, and pulled out of his bag both his textbook and his own bestiary, plus parchment and a quill, immediately writing down the description of each bat.

"Feeds on blood," he'd muttered to Shera, allowing her to have a look at his notes. He knew the first one was a Mortis bat, the second a Spectre bat, both very much magical, and he pondered a bit about the third, commonly known as the vampire bat. Magical, he wrote down next to its name, deciding that every living creature was magical in its own way, and no one could fight him on that. Flipping through the pages of his textbook, he recognized the smallest one as a bumblebee bat, though he wasn't sure about the largest one. Flying fox? was what he'd written next to its description, adding non-magical to the last two.

... though he still thought they were magical.
