Default CoMC Lesson 1: Gone Batty!

It was a nice and cool October evening, but not cold enough to need a sweater yet. There was a soft glow of light in the sky and the sun had just dipped below the horizon; it was officially twilight. Tristan usually set up his lessons in front of the barn, but this one was set a little further into the forest than usual, but not too far. He had set up in a little clearing just outside of a cave. Nothing that would cause them harm lived here, but he knew a cave may be a little scary for some students.

As usual, there was a semi-circle of hay bales set out for the students, and his trusty blackboard was just to the right of the cave entrance. There was no evidence of what kind of creature they would be working with today. He liked keeping them surprised! To the left of the cave there was a large Adirondack Chair made out of hay bales, and that was where Professor Wayland could be found; sipping his Chai Tea from a mug shaped like a Niffler, waiting patiently for his students to arrive.

OOC: Welcome to the first CoMC Lesson of the term! Though this is our first lesson together, this is not the first CoMC lesson of the year, so please keep that in mind! Please make sure you take a gander at the CoMC Rules while waiting. Class will start in 24 hours. Class has begun please jump in!

She still needed two more bats for her to reach the minimum number. Vivian stayed a little bit just in case the bats she had lured earlier decided to fly away, but thankfully they didn't. She took one last glance at the bat trio before going back to one of the bins and retrieved a mango. It had softer skin as compared to the apple, so it should be easier to peel. And yes, she saw her bestie bite the fruits and although that did sound like the easier way to expose the fruit meat, the prefect preferred not to bite anything she wasn't sure was clean enough... just in case.

Vivian sort of poked the mango with her fingernail. She hadn't been able to trim them yet, so there was still a bit of length to it which she deemed good enough to cut through the fruit's skin. She poked a little harder until she was able to pull back a bit of the skin. This required less effort than the apple one, she thought. But she decided she should cut and clean her nails again. She didn't need fruit juice and meat stuck underneath her nails. Ew.

Time to lure the bats! The prefect gave the mango a little squeeze so the juice could trickle down her hand and fall to the floor. Then, she squeezed even more and even Vivian could smell the mango from there. See? Even more reason to stop by the kitchens tonight. There, a bat came flying down to her and found itself a place to land on her shoulder again right after stealing a bite from the mango. "Whoa, hungry?" Vivian had softened up a little bit now. Perhaps they weren't that scary at all. And perhaps that was because they were fruit bats. They didn't bite anything unless there were fruits, right? The prefect offered the mango to the bat again, and yet another one decided to join the mango party too. Great! She had two of them already!

But you know what the hard part of this activity was? It made Vivian feel tiny. With two bats perched on both shoulders, the blond sighed and slightly cursed as she tiptoed to reach the lowest part of the limb that her short legs could manage. She tossed bits of the mango at an empty part and the bats, as if they knew what they were supposed to do, obliged as well. "You both can have the rest, too." Vivian didn't need the fruit anyway. It was for them.

Could she wash her hands now?

It was.......frustrating, to say the least.

His next sentence did earn him a curious raise of her brow though. Decorating the Great Hall with the bats? "I can help?" She'd never actually gotten to help with that sort of thing before and even if it wasn't a direct offer to study the bats, it would still be an opportunity to be around them and gather whatever she could. "Even the poisonous ones?? You mean it??"
Tristan knew she would jump at the chance to do anything with the bats. The look on her face proved it for him he gave her a little grin. Though he quickly raised an eyebrow at that last question. "Uh no, not the poisonous ones. Those we don't put in the Great Hall. There would be a lot of people in the hospital wing if we did that." Just thinking about that gave him a shiver. "Plus, I would lose my job and we don't want that do we?" Thought now that he thought about it...she might want him to lose his job, but then again she probably didn't.

"So we just use the Flying Foxes. But at least you would get to interact with them and--," before he could finish however he was rudely interrupted by the Hufflepuff Prefect screeching at him.

Tristan raised an eyebrow and gave Derfael an incredulous look. Like he didn't get to do enough with creatures already. The kid was helping him all the time. "First of all...it is rude to eavesdrop," he gave Derfael a pointed look, "...and B. you are interacting with the bats perfectly fine right now, where our friend Jessa here, cannot. So do you think it would be fair that you get extra time when she would be getting to interact with them for the first time? Hmm?" He gave him a look. "I think not. So. Maybe one day you and I can come back to the cave over the weekend but Jessa will be the only one to help me in the Great Hall. Okay, Derfael?" Tristan appreciated his excitement to spend time with any and every creature he could but this needed to Jessa's moment. He already had to deny her borrowing bats, he didn't want to take her interaction time away from her.

A few minutes later he checked his watch. It was time to end the lesson. He didn't want to because everyone seemed to really be getting in the groove of attracting the bats, but there time was up. "Alright, everyone! You have about a minute to get your bats on your tree limbs, clean up, and head out of the cave. You all have done a wonderful job! Thank you, as always for making this a wonderful lesson. I hope you all have a good rest of the evening and a good nights rest." With that he gave them all a nod. "If anyone wants to take a piece of fruit for themselves for their walk back to the castle, feel free. I have plenty." He gave them all a wink and walked out of the cave and back to the hay bales to watch as everyone walked back.

OOC: Alright everyone! Thank you so much for coming! I appreciate you all so much! I am going to leave the thread open for another 24 hours so you can finish up! You all rock! Thanks for making this an awesome lesson!

The bats, like a small puff of ominous dark clouds, descended towards him.

Normally it would be a TERRIFYING sight, and he will admit that it made his heart race a bit, but they started to circle him and the fruit salad on the floor and he kinda felt a bit like Bruce Wayne discovering the batcave for the first time. What a feeling it is, a different sort of exhilarating!

But soon the bats has settled into feeding and he definitely had more than 5 around his little makeshift smorgasbord. "Up here, get up here guys..." he said as he took a bit of the smushed fruit salad from the floor and distributed them onto the floating limbs. There was so many of them he had to take a couple more floating limbs to accommodate them all. By the time he was done, he had 8 bats on the limbs plus one really stubborn one lapping up the leftovers on the floor. 9 bats. Plus maybe a couple more who just did the whole eat-and-run thing and has gone back up the ceiling. Not bad eh?

And it was time to go. He wanted to stay a bit more but it was getting late and even he could feel the exhaustion from a full day's classes at this point. He tried pulling together all the leftover fruit salad on the floor to be cleaned up but that one lone bat thats still gorging on the pile wouldnt leave, if anything it got more dead set to staying put given that his food pile has grown quite a bit. "Wow. Ok. You're the Garfield of Bats. Fine have at it. "

And with that he turned to back towards the cave entrance and wave goodbye to the Creature man "Great class Professor Wayland thanks! G'night sir!"

She would just....pretend Nat didn’t totally have a point about it being much harder to get to the bats with them being in there.

But then Bel walked over with an equally logical alternative before walking into the cave and somehow the girl’s heart sank.

”Right. Yeah. Could just rip them open with your hands.” So....not that relevant standing out here afterall. The Ravenclaw did a small, one shouldered shrug. ”It’s fine. I’ll keep cutting since I’m out here and can’t hurt the flying foxes anyway,” Not that she would’ve. By this point, she couldn’t make a mistake with the severing charm even in her sleep. ”you guys can head in and get to winning over those bats with the fruits.”

At that, the Ravenclaw lifted the apple in her hand again, in the vain hope of luring anything out of the cave from this distance. Much like the other times, it didn’t work but she wouldn’t stop on that account. Nope. Just gonna stand here and pretend she actually believed she was achieving something from her spot at the entrance.

Again, she considered casting but didn’t want the Professor blowing it out of proportion with grand ideas of her somehow harming a student in the process. Sometimes his imagination could be more active than hers when it came to what ifs—which said a lot.

At this rate, she wouldn’t need to be cutting anything else. It was proving impossible to get rid of what she’d already cut.

Ripper. Heh. It was refreshing hearing Bel talk too.

Shrugging to Natalie as Jessa essentially dismissed them, he plucked a piece of fruit and dug his fingers into it to tear off a piece - just as Professor Wayland came over to talk with Jessa. "PROFESSOR! CANIHELPWITHTHEBATSTOO?!" he squeaked, half inserting himself into their conversation but trying to be kiiiiiiiinda discrete about it. Ish.

It was HARD not to let his brow knot as he listened...though he was TRYING not to because there was a task to be done and BATS to interact with and sldjfdslfsdjfs. "Let's go," he whispered, giving Natalie's hand a tug and heading inside the cave with his hands cooooooovered in fruit juice already. Juice that trickled down his arm as he raised it above his head as they walked into the cave after Bel.

"This spot looks good," he whispered as he slipped his hand out of Natalie's and lifted BOTH his up in the air, palms towards the roof of the cave to wait for some of the bats to come swooping in with their enticing fruit. Though he did squish things up a bit more to, you know, make the smell all potent and such. "Psssssst...Amanda," Derf hissed, nodding his head towards the first year. "Join us?"

The more fruit smell in one place the better, you know? And there were already a few bats swooping close to him and Natalie as was.

Well, Jessa clearly wasn't going to go into the cave and while Natalie WAS very curious, she wasn't going to push her and try to find out just yet. She'd let her chill. Also, she didn't want to get in trouble by the Professor for not doing the activity. Speaking of, the professor was now coming over... and talking to Jessa. Natalie stepped away with Derf as the professor started talking and tried not to eavesdop.... as Derf was.

But then he got scolded, which seemed RATHER harsh, since he was only trying to HELP take care of the bats, not pry into Jessa's problem with caves.

Even so, Natalie kept quiet... and then held Derf's hand (which made her a little asdkfjsf) as he tugged her back into the cave. And honestly, her hands were all sticky with fruit juice too, so she didn't notice his sticky fingers. She smiled a liiiiittle as she stopped inside the cave and let her hand go. Halfheartedly raising her hand up, Natalie squealed in terror and delight when a furry little bat swooped down and swiped the fruit right out of her hand!

"DIDYOUSEETHAT?!" She WHISPER!SHOUTED to Derf. It had come and gone so quick that she didn't have time to be grossed out!

Oh, wait -- class was over already? Darn. Her hands were all STICKY.

Not the poisonous ones? But...but those were probably the most interesting!

Jessa thought it over quickly, not considering what he'd said about his job for the simple fact she wasn't naive enough to think the man would ever risk his job for her. It was a non-option. She didn't waste her time considering those, especially not when there were more possible things available.

"Well.....what if....you took one anyway? In a cage? You wouldn't be decorating the Great Hall with it but at least then I'd be able to get the interaction I'm missing out on." That was a good compromise, wasn't it? "And you can control who interacts with it so no one will have a chance to channel their inner Gryffindor.....or Ravenclaw admittedly."

AND she'd be able to better appreciate it without a cave looming over her the way this one was. Hard to really retain much under those circumstances but...oh.... Derf....... She hadn't meant to have him in a position that got him scolded. The Ravenclaw offered him a small, apologetic smile before he took Nat and headed back into the cave.

Blue eyes rose to the man again. "Thanks, by the way." She didn't explain what it was for, but it was still important to let him know she appreciated it. Not being forced to just suck it up and enter the cave--as if it was possible. Oh and the lesson was over. Oh Meeeeeerlin, thank CIRCE!!! "I'm sure it was a great lesson, Sir." She said, before heading back to her bale of hay to collect her things.

So his plan was working. Then suddenly, another bat came flying in from nowhere and snatched his leftover pieces from his hand! He jumped back in surprise and almost cursed.

Zoryn gave Nathan a look of disbelief as she set her cut fruit on the ground beside her. Giving her partner a shrug, she turned back to see if any bats were coming her way. 'Cause he was getting some to come over, but unfortunately Zoryn hadn't seen a lot of luck yet. Maybe it's cause she kept talking.

After a few minutes of waiting, not one but TWO bats came down to eat some of the fruit!!! HA. She turned around to give Nathan A LOOK of victory and was just in time to see him jump back in fear. "Oh yeah, totally not scared," lol what a scaredy kneazle.

The Gryffindor laughed a bit as she went to retrieve some more fruity treats, some mangos this time. Using diffindo to cut it up, she held out a piece for Nathan before turning back to set down ones for herself. And the bats were maybe starting to trust her or something??? 'Cause she got another TWO to come and eat !!!!

It was about when Kye had set the sixth bat on a branch when they were called to attention. Ugh, good. She was done with the whole bat thing, and was ready to go pass out. Even so, she smiled at the professor on her way out. It wasn't his fault that she was bad with creatures.

"Goodnight Professor Wayland!" She waved and went on her way.

Daehyun was petting one particularly cuddly bat as it fed from the palm of his hand when professor Wayland announced the end of the class. He couldn't help the pout on his face as the creature flew away, wishing he could stay there all night and befriend all of them.

As he cleaned the fruit juice that had become sticky on his hands with a Scourgify, he pulled the sleeves of his sweater back down, and grabbed a mango to eat on the way back to the castle. "Thank you, professor. Have a good night!" he said with a smile, turning around to wait for Shera before returning to the castle.

With her partner being busy and all cutting up the fruit, Ry focused more so on getting the adorably cut little bats fed and up onto the tree limbs. She already had one on the tree limb and well the other one didn't seem to want to leave her shoulder. Which was just fine by her.

Grabbing another piece of fruit from one of the buckets, she used her fingers to tear it into smaller pieces. It made a gooey mess of her hands, the juice slipping through her fingers and down her arm. This appeared to do the trick though as a rather large bat came swooping down out of nowhere to try to land on her hand and snatch up the piece of fruit and fly away. "Hey!" she giggled. "You're supposed to let me get you up onto the perch..." Oh well. Silly bat.

Tearing off another chuck of mango this time she stretched her arm out in front of her before squeezing the fruit droplets of juice dripping onto her shoes. A bat flew down to perch itself on her hand taking the offered piece and nibbling at it. Aaawww! "Hello, there. Let's get you to your friends." Slowly she walked the bat over to the branch so he could fly up onto it and enjoy it's meal.

Her attention was drawn to the bat that had been hanging out on her shoulder when it made it's way up into her hair. Someone please say it was NOT eating that mango slice while sitting on her head?! She raised a hand with a piece of fruit in it to try to get the bat off her head and onto her hand. Only the bat just took the fruit from her and didn't move. Rude!

She was still trying to get the bat off her head when Professor Wayland announced that the lesson was over. What?! It couldn't be over already. She wasn't finished and she had a bat on her head that wouldn't move and was dripping mango juice into her hair. SIGH.

"Professor? I can't get this bat to move onto the tree limbs.. every time I try he just moves to another spot..." She wasn't upset at all, in fact she was giggling about it right now.

Yeah... Miranda had decided to watch as opposed to participate...
Bats just weren't her thing.. Like at all. In fact they repulsed her.. Flying mice.. That's all they really were.. Flying devil rats full of bugs and disease and NO THANKS!.. But she was cool with cutting up the fruit for anyone who might need extra .. It seemed that the bats were enjoying being fed by everyone.. Better them than her.. Mhm..

" Hey, Rylee.. Here.. Try to lure him to hop onto the branch with this..", She smiled as she handed her adopted baby sister a bitty piece of fruit.

Sad that class was over, Emmalyn quietly cleaned up her area of the cave. She had dropped several pieces of fruit and didn’t want them to simply sit and rot. After cleaning up, she grabbed a couple apples, picked up her bag, and headed out the entrance of the cave. “Good night, Professor Wayland. Great class!”

Her mind was still running full speed thinking of what they just got to do. So many bats were in that cave and they all seemed fairly friendly. She wondered how, or rather when, she would next visit the cave. There would need to be some planning and she would need to stock up on fresh fruit. She also needed to do some more studying on the types of bats. She didn’t know nearly as much as she wished about the creatures.

Especially since he had another one land in the palm of his hand while he was attempting to do a mental tally.

Oh wow, that was fast! Time flew as fast as the bats when you were in a dark cave. "Okay little buddy, up you get," he said, coaxing his latest friend onto one of the branches. "I'm grabbing an apple for the road if you want anything, Junia."

Finally Finn left the cave. "Thanks, Professor," he said, holding up his apple. It was a multi-faceted thankfulness.

Just as the professor called the lesson to an end, Bel was feeding Bat number five. Another little boy. She was amazed that her classmates either hadn't noticed, or were well-behaved enough not to make crass jokes, because back home there had been much laughter at the very obvious differences between the boy and girl flying foxes. The other four bats she had already fed were now hanging on the floating tree branch. Bat number five was clinging to her robes, upside down at her shoulder.

"Yes you can have all this mango to yourself. Yes you can. Isn't that tasty? Your cheeks are so full you can't even answer me. Good boy. Lets get you on ya branch with ya friends, shall we?"
Bel carefully took hold of his feet, extracting her robes from his grip, and then lifted him up, getting only a couple of lazy flaps as she did so. She hooked him on the branch, noting how his feet automatically curled around it. She always thought it was amazing how they needed their muscles to open their feet up, not to close and hold on.

All done. Bel headed out of the cave. She had to wash her hands off now. So sticky.

"Thanks professor."

"Join us?"
"Thanks," Night called to the older boy. "I just don't know why they aren't coming to me." She held out her peach pieces hopelessly. "And please, call me Night."

Patrick watched a few other students trying to lure the bats out of the cave and onto the tree trying to get a feel for how they were doing it. In the end Patrick decided that it might be best if he would go ahead and just do what Professor Wayland had done, he slightly muddled the fruit in his hand and waited for a bat to come to him. He got the first one pretty easy. But bat number two was way more cantankerous. The stupid thing wouldn't come down from the cave wall no matter what he tried. So he moved toward a new second bat.

Bat number twothree came down almost as soon as the fruit juice started creeping toward his armpit. He wanted to get a third one but by that time Professor Wayland had called the lesson to a close. He figured 2/3 wasn't so bad considering he was not a fan of bats.

That was a good compromise, wasn't it? "And you can control who interacts with it so no one will have a chance to channel their inner Gryffindor.....or Ravenclaw admittedly." AND she'd be able to better appreciate it without a cave looming over her the way this one was.

Tristan gave her an incredulous look. Did she not understand that not even HE wanted to go near them they were that dangerous? And he'd dealt with mother Dragons just after they had laid eggs. "I don't know Jessa, it's just too risky. They are very hostile and I don't want to put you in danger. Besides, you wouldn't be missing out on interacting with them as no one else is. There are only Flying Foxes in here.
I'll think about it, but don't be upset if I don't show up with one."
He was not going to put her or anyone else in danger by being in close contact with a poisonous creature.

She didn't need an elaboration on her gratitude. Fear was something everyone had to overcome and she would when it was time for her. But he wasn't going to be the one to push her. "No problem." He said with a wink. When she complimented him...sorta he grinned, and replied, "I hope it was. I'll let you know when to help me set up the great hall." He waved as she walked away.

Tristan was just about to help out Rylee when Miranda placed some fruit on the tree limb. He watched hoping the Bat would budge but...this bat really liked Rylee. He chuckled. "Well, Rylee I think you have found a new friend. Here let me help you." He cut a very large hunk of mango, squeezed some of the juice out and placed the fruit on his arm.
"Now, don't move." He put his arm at the feet of the bat, which was on her head, and waited for the sweet creature to get the hint. It took a minute,
but the bat finally hopped of the young girls head and onto his arm. "There you go. I'll get this one on the limb for you. You run off before he gets anymore ideas." He said with a chuckle.

Tristan watched as each student left, waving and saying his goodbyes. He really hoped they had enjoyed this lesson. He knew not everyone loved this subject but he hoped they knew how much he enjoyed their presence in his lessons.

With a quick wave of his wand, the bales of hay and twinkle lights disappeared took off towards the barn, and he then caged the Mortis and Spectre bats separately. He took the Flying Fox back to the cave and let it get its fill of a mango before caging the Vampire bat. Unbeknownst to his students, the Bumblebee Bat was actually his. "Alright Penelope, time to go home." He patted his pocket and headed out into the chilly night towards his hut.
