Default Care of Magical Creatures Lesson ❧

CARE OF MAGICAL CREATURES LESSON

The Care of Magical Creatures are was still a renovation in progress. The grass was overgrown and patchy like a checkered quilt knitted by someone who had no business owning a pair of knitting needles. While the creatures had, by this point in time, mostly reaccumulated to their Hogwarts home, Mathys found himself convinced that the very vegetation of the grounds had turned wild in the absence of wizarding kind.

Though such sentiments were wasted on the next hour and a half ahead. There was important lessons to be learned and a very special creature for students to engage with.

A hodgepodge assortment of wooden crates and hale bales lay in a circular formation around a central table where a decorative bronze birdcage sat and dotted within the cage a few small birds with elegant blue speckled feathers that caught the afternoon sun just so. Though something seemed amiss with them. One in particular who was not hopping from branch like the others, but rather had nestled itself to the floor of the cage.

Mathys himself stands beside the cage wearing bold robin’s egg blue robes that helped highlight his frosty, yet some how soft, stare.

Come on in and take a seat on any of the bails of hay or crates. The lesson will begin shortly.

Nostredame has a nice smile, did he know? It was enough to cause a red tinge to creep up on his cheeks as he continued smiling at the man. Not that he was LOOKING but he was certainly paying more attention to him than the cage and the birds inside of them.

Yeaaaaaaaaah, how was he going to pass this class?

But then it was time to start and Lucas sat up a little straighter. It was only now, when Nostredame started moving, that his green eyes shifted to the birds and the one bird who was not acting like the others. Oh. Was this going to be a sad lesson? Talking about ageing and death? Because that’s almost what his question - and the way he was holding that one bird - implied.

His eyes were stuck on that one bird but his mind was already thinking of what he could say in response to that question. Something that wouldn’t embarrass him and wasn’t something some of the other people had mentioned. Some people had brought up some good points, but it was only Carsyn’s response that got a reaction out of him - and not the good kind.

Study faeces?????? No thank you.

The Gryffindor shook his head slightly and raised his hand in the air. "With some creatures, you can tell from their teeth. Especially creatures that have a similar genetic structure as humans, you know?" Was this the same for others? He didn’t know. "As you get older, your teeth start to get worn down. Some even lose them. And if it didn’t have a link to diet, it could have a link to ageing." Shrug.

Signs of aging? Flynn thought about it and put his hand up. "Professor, sometimes people lose their marbles. Some animals must too? Like forget things. I can't remember what its called when that happens though, But its something to do with the brain degenerating somehow."

He was determined not to get distracted in this lesson and kept his eyes on the professor, just to make SURE of it.

Curtis wondered what the Professor would say and if he caught how exaggerated his compliment was. Well, looks like he took it well. Professors always loved being complimented. It made him grin. He waited with the others until the lesson began with the first question.

First question, how to distinguish the age of a creature or person. Curtis thought about it for... about a few seconds. "They usually look really ugly the older they get, with all the skin dragging and pieces of their fur or hair thinning. When they're born they look ugly too but that's cause they haven't grown into their looks yet." Curtis said, when it was his turn to speak. There, that was his answer.

Signs of aging in creatures? Cole was at first super stumped for an answer but then thought of his favourite creature; kneazles. Thinking he put up his hand to answer tentatively "Um very old kneazles can get greying whiskers, loose fur and also get problem with their teeth. My mum said that sometimes teeth not just on kneazles can rot or even grow backwards, is that true?" It had sounded pretty painful when Cole had first heard about it.

Of course, Professor Mathys is looking flawless as ever- must be the French water but this teacher is gorgeous. "Bonjour, Professor" she smiled at him "You're looking really nice today" well, he looks really nice everyday.

Jillian took a seat next to a fellow sixth year (Nora) and gave her a smile as well. "Hi" she whispered softly.

Pivoting around so as to make eye contact with the entire circle, Mathys could not help but feel a tinge of disappointment in that none had correctly identified the creature right under their noses. They would learn soon enough.

Casting a sympathetic glance towards the cage and the black eyed beauties within, the French man flipped the elegant knee length coattails of his robes upwards and swiveled around the cage to face the designated ‘front’ of the class (though as he spoke he would continue to thoughtfully circumnavigate the cage) and officially began. “Bonsoir and welcome to anothair Care of Magical Creatures lesson. Today comes a a bit of a change of pace compared to our studies up to ziss point.” The handling and observing of infant creatures, that is. “Many of you, as you entered our circle here tahday, deesplayed astute observational skeells.” He paused a moment to run the tips of his fingers along the front of his robes. It pleased him to see that Hogwarts students were not as fashionably handicapped as they had displayed while at Beauxbatons and knew a look when they saw one. “No mahttair ze species, whethair human or creature, zere are always signs of ageing to be observed or indicators of ailment.” He paused to stand before the cage and gingerly opened the door. Several of the blue birds leaped at the opportunity to land on his arm and hand, but his attention was clearly on the one who did not. “Our feathered friends here aside, who would like to share one descreeptive qualeety, a detail, zat helps identeefy ze age of anothair leeving creature? No leemitahtions on wheech creature you speak of.

Gingerly and as though the winged creature were made of glass, Mathys slipped his hand beneath him and carefully removed him from his cage. Cupping the delicate bird in his hands, he whispered something to it. Though what was uttered was between the man himself and the bird.
OOC: this lesson has officially begun! If you are just joining us now please do not hesitate to jump right in (catch up is always welcome at any point during the lesson). We will continue in approximately 24 hours.

Nora grinned as Jillian joined and sat next to her. "Hey, Jil." She replied with a smile as she took her notebook out of her school bag. Soon enough, the class started, Nora's eyes still focused on the birds as she lightly sketched them on the pad, of course listening to the Professor. His question was rather particular, as she had only seen only a few animals and creatures age back in her home, and only had seen one slowly die...

She raised her hand after thinking of some signs that are always observed. "Some lose their senses, eyesight, smell, taste, and their strength. As an example, birds may slowly lose sight of the brightness, dimness and position of places they're even used to be at all the time, even not recognize them...and even their emotional state, as they can't do the things they used to when young..." Which was terribly sad to see.

Arts TRANSPONSTER!

By now, Catherine had been feeling more confident about sitting a little farther away from those she knew, and she was happy to simply take notes and listen to the lecture on her own. Of course, she didn't mind if her brother, best friend or any of the others she knew decided to sit near her, but if they started chatting away then they would have to move. Or she would.

This time, she was sitting nearby another Ravenclaw (Avalon) and Charlie. She was close enough to overhear their short conversation about the blue spekled birds. "They're Jobberknolls." She told them matter-of-factly. And regarding whether it was dying or not... "If it's about to die it'll make a very loud noise." She added, never taking her eyes off the professor and the cute little birds that were on him. It would be sad if it did die, but that was life.

Now, regarding the professor's question, Catherine jotted down all of the things she could think of and that her classmates were saying out loud. See, back home they could tell the age of their llamas and alpacas by looking at their teeth. Daddy knew how old the owls were not only because they owned they since their birth, but also because of their eye colour. Catherine could tell which of her fish were older or younger by the number of growth rings they had. And she was sure one figured out the age of a dragon by the length from their head to their tail. Unless their tail had been chopped off, then Catherine wouldn't know how to figure that out. She reckoned specific sizes of dragons would differ by species, but she didn't know enough about that - nor was she that interested.

The first year didn't fancy speaking up in front of the entire class, so she kept quiet as she sat up straight, holding her notes carefully on her lap. She was more comfortable about being at Hogwarts by now, but that did not mean she was going to talk out loud in a lesson and call attention to herself. No, thank you.

Oh. The professor had such a charming smile, and Phoebe grinned happily at him and his peacock preening. This class was always so interesting AND there were baby animals, so it was basically like the best place in the castle. And no spell casting, which made Phoebe very very happy.

"I heard that erumpents know when they're about to die, and they have like this HOMING signal in their brains that tells them to go to a specific place. Like salmon, right? Except they aren't going home, they're going to a erumpent graveyard. But it's probably not true, because if anyone ever found that place, they would know where all the dead erumpent horns were and they would be so rich." True story, bro.

For the remainder of the time before the lesson started, Kaiser had taken to messing with his own school tie, perhaps subconsciously mirroring Kodee. He wasn't trying to retie it or anything though, just fiddling with the ends of it. When Nostredame spoke to address the entire class, Kaiser dragged his gaze that way.

... So. Care of Magical Creatures could sometimes be a bit tricky for Kaiser, on account of how he had spent a long time keeping his distance from even mundane animals. Not that he didn't like them - he'd wanted a dog for the longest time, for all kinds of reasons - but, even as a child, had been so scared of getting attached and then losing his animal companion in some way or another that he had avoided any such attachment in the first place. Not to mention... certain practical obstacles. The point was... he was woefully lacking in general creature knowledge, and only had what he knew from classes and homework.

In the end, he decided to go for a general answer, rather than identify a specific creature. Eyeing the bird in Nostredame's hands, he let go of his tie with one hand and half raised it. "Most-" All? He didn't know. "-creatures have a lot less energy when they grow old. They might become tired, or weak."

He searched his brain for an answer, what did he know about aging in animals either young or old. And the thought about his dog growing up. "Well, I know some animals get grey around the muzzle area when they age, and the start to move slower, or are unable to jump like they used to." Even though he has referencing his very non magical dog, he assumed it worked from magical crups and other animals to.

Descriptive qualities to identify the age of another creature.
Hmmm...

One thing she knows about are cats since they've had cats for as long as she can remember but qualities in aging on any type creature seems to be the same, this includes them. Not all of the creatures but certainly most, right? Humans age faster (or shorter) than witches but they all still age. Clearing her throat she raised her hand to answer "Physical changes are always present such as the skin becoming all wrinkly and saggy. Also there is a reduce in activity because their muscles and bones aren't strong as it used to be" she uttered. Isn't sad though? She doesn't want her cats to age but that's nature.

Both Monsieur Ryan and Mademosielle Kim raised points that he would address later (the change in color and elasticity of skin), but he chose to focus on the lattermost of their response. The one that resonated the most with with the one from Monsieur Kaiser.

"Oui. Zis is somezing zat we see across species."

He responded to her look with a smile and a gentle nudge of his elbow. All good, though he wasn't sure it applied to the professor.

Speaking of, Drewett gave the question some thought. He tried to reflect on his own pets at home, and he briefly considered owl behaviour as they aged—a lot of which have been mentioned by other students. He felt he must deviate from winged creatures. Then that was when he thought of Bertha, the family dog. Well, who was their family dog. The house still felt empty without her.

The seventh year then raised his hand. "From experience, Professor, dogs start losing their appetite as they age," Drewett shared while simultaneously filing away his sad feels about Bertha.
"Indeed, Monsieur Gunter. Zis decrease in ze appetite is often associated weeth ze decrease in energy some of your othair classmates have discussed. Somezing zat is not exclusive to canines."

Then again, that was Bernie; popular and fun and the opposite of Claudine. She was just surprised that Blake wasn’t tagging along with her.

Claudine finally drew her attention away from Bernie. The lesson was about to begin. Aging? Ailment? Yes, those little creatures certainly looked both. Though her expression remained stoic, Claudine was a little sad for the birds. They looked just a bit helpless and it hurt her. She was drawn to creatures a lot more than she was to humans. The Snakette was more interested on the one not on de Nostredame’s extended arm.

When the first question came, Claudine raised her hand. When her turn came, she volunteered, “Their skin might sag.’’

....was it Monsieur Fuller-Thompson's aim in life to be insulting? If so, he was doing a fine job of it and Mathys was disinclined to respond to his answer at all. He felt the frail Jobberknoll quiver in his hand a bit and the professor gently stroked it's back with one of his strong fingers as a response.

He simply lay his eyes on the Slytherin youth before moving on to the other Slytherin youth, Mademoiselle Blaze. "Oui, saggy skin can be a sign of aging in certain species. Zough some creatures, and I am sure you all can zink of more zan a handful of options on your own, already have saggy skeen because of eets evolutionary advantages."

The elephant, as an example. Mathys assumed their previous studies would bring them all to this conclusion at the bare minimum.

He also offered Mademoiselle Kim a quick wink. She had addressed the change in skin's elasticity as well.

When they flew out and landed on the professor’s arm, it reminded her of a bird that her grandmother had once. Naya then watched as the professor gently and carefully removed one bird from its cage. Was it sick? Old? She would have to wait to find out the answer to that question.

In the meantime, there was a question to think about. How to identify the age of a creature. Did he mean specifically or generally? It would be rather hard to guess or figure out a creature’s actual age. Getting the general neighborhood of the age might be a little easier. Too bad that animals were not like trees. You could look at their rings and figure out exactly how old they were.

Coming up with an answer that she hoped was good, Naya raised her hand. “Some people may start to lose their hair when they get older.” Although some people with thinning or balding hair chose to hide it with wigs, hairpieces and weaves......so you may not get that clue.

And as far as Avalon remembered, they hadn't learned about whatever birds were in the cage yet. The Ravenclaw simply asked Charlie if she had ever heard of them.

"Just kidding around, Professor," Avalon answered with a nervous laugh. She didn't really feel like explaining herself, and Nostredame definitely wasn't one she wanted to cross.

When the professor asked about signs of aging, she immediately thought of one of her favorite magical creatures - unicorns. Avalon raised her hand. "Unicorns are born gold. They turn silver when they're about two or three years old. And they don't turn white until they're fully grown." She couldn't remember at exactly what year they were fully grown, though.

The fact that Bernie WASN'T actually drawing an octopus was news, but the blonde mouthed an 'OHHHHHH' and nodded her head in acknowledgement of the correction. She knew if SHE was drawing not an octopus and someone thought it was, she'd want to correct them, too. She got it.

The birds REALLY seemed to like their professor and she didn't blame them, really. He was nice to look at and she BET he took good care of them. You could tell that sort of thing about a person, you could. Her eyes remained fixed on his hands as he carefully picked up the saddest looking bird of the bunch, and Cece wondered if it was sick. It made her kind of sad, but she tried not to dwell on it too much, 'specially now that she had a question to answer.

"A phoenix starts looking sort of worn out when it gets older and closer to its burning day. Their feathers fall out and everything. I suppose that could be true of LOTS of older creatures, as well as people. They could lose feathers or hair or fur when they get old."

By now the jobberknoll had relaxed in his palm again, eyes closed and breathing slowing if the gently rustle of its breast feathers on his palm were any indication.

"Oui oui," he nodded. "Graying muzzles as Monsieur Ryan addressed and ze general graying as Monsieur Pascal mentioned are anothair common physical change across species. The shedding of fur, skin, scales as Mademosielle Lindsay brought up anothair good visual cue of aging and not just in the case of old age. Anyway, she didn't tell them what she WAS drawing Kodee Chosen wearing a tophat. Instead, she flipped her notebook to a new page, so that she could write stuff down as de Nostredame talked.

"Of course!" she'd responded brightly to the professor. She had to see what was new in the stables this term. And she'd quite liked visiting the horsies. :3

Class was starting now, and of course Bernie was admiring the professor's robes like everyone else. She wondered if he was fishing for compliments or guiding them toward the right answer here?

Hmm. He was being very... delicate with that bird.

"I've read that you can tell the age of horses by looking at their teeth," she answered, hand raised. "I bet this is also true for abraxans? And aethonans? And granians?" It was probably true of all the horsies they had in the stables here.

"Tu as raison," he nodded towards Mademoiselle Grantham and Monsieurs Vance and Dakest, showing his own teeth contained within a soft grin that showed no signs of aging what so ever. "Ze age of all equine, ze magical and mundane, 'ave very distinct indicators when it comes to zeir teeth." Something they would practice later in the term on the very winged horses in the barns. The OWL level and above students, that is. Mathys could not afford having the younger students at risk of losing fingers. "It is true, Monsieur Vance. Teeth are teeth. Zhough I will say zat for felines, including ze kneazle, zat zese sorts of matters are rare due to zeir relatively low-sugar diets, differences in oral bacteria, and ze shape of ze teeth zemselves."

Louise raised her hand. "Baby kittens are born with their eyes closed. And they stay closed for, like, a week. So you know a kitten is less than a week or so old if their eyes are still shut." She knew this because her mum's cat had babies a while ago, and she got to take one of her kittens and keep her after she was born. It had been quite fascinating.

She was really distracted by the professor's robes. She hadn't noticed them before, but now that he was wandering around the circle while flipping them around, they were all she could focus on. That is, until the cages were opened, and the birds landed along the man's arm. This was starting to look like something out of a professional ballet dance or something. Or maybe that was just Isla's overactive imagination. She was having a super hard time focusing...

She did catch on to the fact that maybe the Jobberknoll she thought was sick was probably just aging. That kind of made sense, too. Hopefully it wouldn't start screaming out every sound it had ever heard backwards right here in front of them! When a question was asked, it distracted her from possible dying birds for the time-being. She finally managed to come up with a response and raised her hand. "In young birds, their eye colors are really dark, and they supposedly lighten up as they age," she said.

This would likely not happen again.

Kodee straightened some from his position of looking at the dying bird when Kaiser walked over, giving him a bro nod. Bernie got a hello and a request to see her fungus octopus after class because that’s what Phoebe said she was drawing and depending on how it turned out, the 7th year figured it could’ve been cool looking. Worth a laugh, if nothing else.

“What Kaiser said, we don’t mind.” Chloe could sit there if she wanted, he was neither here nor there about it and being Gunnar’s little sister, he was more inclined to be nice—inviting even.

As the class began, Kodee gave up on his tie, allowing it to simply hang loose and untied about his neck. He’d get to it later. It would likely only distract him and Merlin knew how easily distracted he was on his OWN.

A hand jutted up at the question. “On the same note of sight Louise mentioned, you can tell something’s getting on in age when it starts losing sight. Eyes stop being what they used to be and the next thing you know, you’re waltzing right onto the dinner plate of the next creature that thinks you’re delicious.”

Was he the only one who wished the man had adapted to castle culture? Back in France, he was fancy but this was Hogwarts. They had cobwebs coming out of coffee cups. Dude was trying waaaay too hard.

Mademoiselle Barrie seemed a bit all over in her response, perhaps due to an emotional reaction to something going on externally to the lesson. So Mathys offered her an additional nod of the head as she brought up a creature's eyesight along with others. Though, if he were to nitpick a bit, not all of them were explicitly addressing external tell-tale signs for magizoologists to identify with.

Particularly the words from Monsieur Chosen in which the only physical descriptor would be one creature being devoured by another. Which was to say, no real descriptor at all.

"Zhose is a fine observations, Mademoiselles Bones and Bellchant. Along with zese, often oldair creatures will be seen with a cloudiness in ze eyes zat is more typical among oldair creatures zan younger ones."

Feeling her cheeks grow tight with a smile she watched as the girl stuck her hand out. Charlie felt like maybe she should talk to her. Grasping her hand she smiled, "Nice to meet you Avalon. I'm Charlotte. You can call me Charlie." she turned her head to look at the bird in the cage, not even slightly sure of what it was, "I have absolutely no idea what kind of bird that is. But i'm really hoping that its not dying or dead." She shivered a bit because that would hurt her soul.

Charlie turned her attention back to Professor Nostredame as he spoke, not trying to be rude to Avalon, but she absolutely did not need to feel the wrath of the pretty professor. Raising her hand, using the manners she tried to have, she was ready to answer, "Memory can go. Your pets or animals might not recognize you any more." Her voice grew softer, "or people will start to forget who you are when they get old." She had heard it was a terrible thing and had seen it a time or two.

A behavioral observation, yes. And one that was not always a clear indicator unless you had a very personal relationship with the creature. But it was nonetheless a valid response.

"Dementia, Monsieur Whitlock, which is ze collective term for several degenerative brain diseases," he addressed the young Hufflepuf directly. "A truly a tragic affair to witness a creature's behavior change and something no species is exempt from."

It wasn't their first lesson and creatures lessons seemed to be in the afternoon thus far this year, but she wanted to express her gratitude irregardless in case he decided to spring them a loop next week with an early morning lesson.

As far as the lesson went, the fifth year had to strain to decipher within his accent. One would think after a year of listening to it she would be able to easily identify what he was talking about, yet Carsyn found herself concentrating intensely on his words. How to identify age of another living creature?

Chewing her lip, a lot of her peers seemed to offer up answers she knew but there had to be more, didn't they? Creature didn't have rings like trees like that one Slytherin girl was suggesting ... did they??

"Could you perhaps use their fecal samples? I know, for instance that fresh droppings are darker in color compared to when they've been sitting awhile... but maybe frequency of creatures pooping?" Opportunity to talk about poo without it being inappropriate - Carsyn was definitely taking that chance!
This...was a bit of a stretch for the question being prescribed. No, NO. He was being far too generous with his optimism and it had nothing to do with his inquiry. Yes, there was a change in bowel habits that came with age but...

Deciding he would rather not dignify her offering with any form of verbal answer, the French man simply wrinkled his nose and took pity on the girl's dormmates. May she keep no fecal samples tucked under her bed nor anywhere else.

She didn’t mind sitting alone (she minded a lot), but fortunately she wouldn’t have to. Drewett’s company was always a delight.

A few things happened next that made Nina want to disengage entirely. The first being that their Professor had asked ‘who would like to share’ and? Nina? Would not like to share. So with all due respect, she chose not to offer up an answer to his question. He had asked if she would like to, and the answer was no. So. The second strange thing to happen was that Professor Nostredame almost put his mouth on the bird, which was GROSS! And the third thing was the whispering. Which all things considering? Was very strange.

Of course she kept all of these thoughts to herself, though she did turn to look at Drewett with concern. Surely he would understand.

Sitting down she did try to concentrate, she really did, but her eyes and her mind kept going to the fact that she was sitting right next to Kaiser and Kodee was so close to. Maybe they would work in pairs of three, maybe they would let her work with them. They had seen her in class before so she didn't know what she was feeling like such an immature girl over this, but here she was being a third year with a crush.

Shaking her head she tried to focus and even pulled out parchment for notes, but she realized that people were answering a question, they even were answering the question, and she didn't know what that question even was.

His cool stare rested on Mademoiselles Castillo, McCarthy, and Mordaunt in turn as if coaxing them to speak. Though when none offered responses, he moved on under the assumption that at the very least they were being attentive listeners.

Mathys was just about to wave his wand to conjure a list for students to jot down were they not doing so already (just the essential highlights) when the bird in his hand gave an unsettled shudder and straightened it's neck. The Care of Magical Creatures professor knew what was coming.

"...I suggest you all covair your ears," he warned while his eyes remained fixated on the blue feathered creature in his palm. It would merely help muffle the noise and by no means cancel it out. "...quickly now," he added with a hiss.

Bowing his head once again, he whispered once more to the tiny creature in his mother tongue to be at peace before he closed his eyes and braced for what was to come.

...and come it did.

In the next instant (and hopefully by the time students had covered their ears), the bird elongated its neck further and opened its beak. What transpired next was indescribable. Beginning with the professor's gentle words (though they did not sound so gentle now) in reverse, the jobberknoll screamed with such volume and passion that bones could rattle and tears brought to the eyes. Both horrifying and beautiful all the same, it was a melody that would never be heard again.
OOC: this is a "reaction question". You are encouraged describe/speculate what sounds your character is able to pick out during the jobberknoll's final cry among other possible reactions. We will continue in approximately 24 hours.

Tom was confused when the Professor told them to cover up his ears, though he did what he was told, the next few moments though, his mouth dropped to the floor and his eyes went wide. Had the Professor seriously just done what he thought he had.

"Professor!" Tom voice was little more that a mutter, "You murder it!" Tom couldn't believe it, surely the creatures had the same rights as humans, you know they could live until they wanted to.

Well, yes. It does go without saying that the loss of one's appetite didn't simply apply to dogs. But not all instances of appetite loss meant ageing, right? It could probably mean simply not being in the mood to eat. That happens. Maybe he should've specified that when he shared his answer, but all Drewett did was smile sheepishly and nod in response. Professor Nostredame was right about that.

The seventh year had being writing something down on his notes when they were told to cover their ears. His eyes as wide and reminiscent of the eyes emoji, Drewett looked up to see the jobberknoll looking all strange. It was enough for him to raise his hands and place them tightly over his ears. Maybe he should close his eyes too because he didn't think he wanted to witness a magical bird's death. Or any death at all.

Instead of shutting his eyes entirely, Drewett looked down to his lap as he tried not to feel panicky over perhaps the most terrifying scream he's ever heard. Was that music? Music? It was kind of scary, but beautiful. Scarily beautiful. And.....let's be real, when a jobberknoll was dying, the last thing he'd expect for its scream to include would be laughter. It was creepy. Drewett cringed a little, still looking to his lap and keeping his hands over his ears. He wasn't even sure now, but he just felt all the creeps.

Why were they being subjected to this? Had someone somehow offended the professor and he'd decided to punish them all for it? No, she wasn't finding anything remotely beautiful about this at all. They were being asked to watch as a living thing literally died. And yes, she knew that death was a part of life, but still.

Whitney sat there, her ears covered as tightly as she could, glaring at Professor de Nostredame and wishing she had earplugs or headphones or anything more substantial than her hands. Though, the reason she was glaring purely irritation at having to witness such a thing. She knew the professor hadn't murdered the jobbernoll.

Alexandre heard the warning to cover their ears just in time and clamped his hands over his ears. For a split second he wasn't sure why he was doing it, exactly. And then the bird did... that. Started... screaming, for lack of a better word. Though it could almost be described as singing? Except he thought screaming was probably a better description if not just because of the sheer volume and intensity of the noise. He stared wide eyed at the bird and just watched. Was it dying? Were they watching a bird die? Alexandre didn't like that, not at all. He felt his eyes grow a bit hot. Was it the moment or the sound that was nearly driving him to tears? Whichever it was, he was determined that he would NOT cry. Because he was fourteen and grown up and might never hear the end of it from some of his more... Gryffindor-inclined yearmates. In any case he decided he did NOT want to see this bird's last moments on this earth so he squeezed his eyes shut. Somebody tell him when it was over.

Cole was jotting down notes as Professor de Nostredame summarized and answered questions about aging in creatures. He was about to look sideways to see what Carys had written when the blue bird in the professor's hand caught his full attention. Forgetting the parchment in his lap eniterly he quickly covered his ears. The scream the bird gave off as it most likely died was indescribable and horrific and its volume was ear deafening. Cole stuck his thumbs into his ears to shut out the terrible song sound, but he couldn't. It felt like the bird song penetrated his whole being. Eyes watering and it felt like his ears we're hurting on the verge of bleeding. When would it stop? Closing his eyes shut Cole wondered how such a beautiful bird could sing so horrificly? He hoped that when the sound died out because it must sometime right, that he still could hear through his ears.

Unsure what the Professor had meant ... Blake obliged rather quickly to cover his ears. He had a sense of foreboding. Something bad or sad was about to happened. Blake was unsure that he wanted to be a part of it. He turned his eyes from the little bird just as it began to 'scream' for lack of any other term. It was a death screech and Blake felt just a sting at the corner of his eyes like a tear might be produced.

He didn't want to cry in front of the whole school so he did his best to contains himself as the creature in front of his continued it's wailing.

"Thanks, Catherine," Avalon whispered in response to her housemate. Should she be slightly embarrassed that a first year figured out what kind of bird that was before she did? Maybe. Perhaps she should have done some more reading over the summer.

She was right in the middle of jotting down some notes on her parchment when the professor told them to cover their ears. Avalon had the feeling that this was not going to be a very pleasant experience. Reluctantly covering her ears with her hands, she watched carefully as Professor de Nostredame whispered something to the bird. And then it began.

It was a bizarre sound, a frenetic one that reminded her of a cassette tape rewinding. She winced as the noise seemed to increase in volume, causing her skin to erupt in goosebumps. It was so piercing that Avalon couldn't pick up on everything, but she heard a few things more clearly than others. For one, she heard some pleasant music. Followed by something that sounded like a waterfall, and then a baby crying. She hoped that Nostredame had put a sound muffling charm over this are. If not, the entire castle might think that someone was being brutally murdered on the grounds.

Jillian smiled when the professor winked at her. She did state two answers- she was quite pleased with it. Thank you, Professor Mathys. That wink was absolutely adorable. She redirected her thoughts at the bird. She's not sure if she has seen one in person- yeah, this is definitely the first time. With the Professor's instructions, Jillian placed her hands up to cover both of her ears. She kept thinking that this bird is going to have a hell of a sound....

Aaaaaand it did. Her eyes looked at the jobberknoll, she can hear the loud sound it was making. It was a terrible screech... like it was dying. It wasn't painful as it was sad. Jillian has a soft spot for creatures and this is making her feel uneasy. Poor birdie.

Ohh, they'd be studying phoenixes, TOO? Cecelia was pleased, her face all lit up as she smiled. She liked the sound of that, she did.

What she DIDN'T like so much was the sound she could hear coming from the little bird even with her hands over her ears, muffling the scream as best she could. It made her wince, her eyes wide as she listened to what could've been the loud buzzing of an insect, and then people talking, though she couldn't make out the words. Was that-could it have been rain? It was a strange combination of words and sounds and it made her feel a little dizzy because the volume was overwhelming and the fact that the jobberknoll was dying, well, it made the second year incredibly sad. What a thing to witness.

Tears in her eyes, she chanced a glance around at her friends, wondering if they felt as weird as she did about this. As sad for the bird. She wondered if its throat hurt from making the sound. She wondered if it felt it at all. She also wondered if the other jobberknolls, having heard the sound, would have something like it in their own scream.

She had a lot on her mind now, okay? It was all a little overwhelming, truth be told.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Those were a host of answers coming and Claudine scribbled them down; well, as much of them as she possibly could. But de Nostredame was right: there were creatures not so old with saggy skin. It didn’t matter; her answer could still work as Curtis’s even if he came across so rude. Did he always have to be so forward? Maybe he just liked attention.

Claudine looked up from her note taking in time to see that particular bird shudder. It’s neck seemed to have straightened. The girl watched with a heavy heart. Yes. she knew they were about to witness something sad. She hurriedly abandoned her pencil and book to press her hands over her ears. And though she didn’t want to watch, Claudine couldn’t tear her gaze away from the bird.

That scream…

It was just loud, screechy and so heartbreaking.

The usually so well composed and serious Slytherin did not even realise that a tear had slipped from her right eye and one was about to from her left.

That poor bird.

Arts TRANSPONSTER!

Catherine was unfazed by the professor's cool stare, and kept her stare gaze on him and the birds, her expression remaining neutral. She was curious to see if the bird was indeed going to die.

She acknowledged Avalon's gratefulness with a short nod of her head, still never taking her eyes off the professor and that one singular bird. She had never watched - let alone heard - a jobberknoll dying, and if that bird died on cue... she did not want to miss it.

The first year sat up straighter when the older wizard told them it was time, advising them to cover their ears. Catherine wanted to hear it, so she didn't cover her ears at first and her eyes were now fixed upon the small bird and on the bird alone. This was going to be fascinating.

The idiotic remark of a young Gryffindor - why did it always have to be the Gryffindors?? - made her glare as she shushed him (Tom). Not only had that been utterly silly - how could he even think their Care of Magical Creatures professor would murder the bird? - it was also disrupting the moment she wanted to hear intently.

The scream was indeed getting rather loud, so Catherine finally covered her ears to muffle it a little, but she was glad she could still hear it pretty clearly, only in a lower volume. It was fascinating. Creepy, but fascinating. Her wide eyes sparkled as she kept listening closely to all of the sounds she could recognise. The sound of children laughing and a dog barking caught her attention the most, and as the sound went on and on, Catherine quickly glanced at the other small birds to see what they were doing as one of their kind was dying. Would they all repeat that exact same sound in reverse once they died? If so, then the reversed sound would be back in the correct order. How strange. It would all be part of the sounds those individual birds heard in their lifetime... though if a single jobberknoll listened to multiple jobberknolls die... Merlin, that would be one very long last cry. Maybe they blocked out the cry from other jobberknolls, but maybe they didn't? She'd have to ask the professor that. Later, of course. Once the entire class had gone back to the Castle.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

A more attentive student may have realized his answer had been ignored, but Kodee was not an attentive student. At best, he could be described as a bench warmer. Okay, more than a bench warmer, but certainly not up to the level where he cared much for responses one way or another.

The Gryffindor was much too busy watching the dying bird. Somewhere along the line, he’d gone right back to his tie. At the moment, it was his only real source of stimulation. Suffice to say the kid cared zero for what happened to animals when they got old. Bottom line was, they died.

Next.

Kodee tugged his tie from the knot he’d just made, hardly making an attempt to feign listening but he did hear the bit about covering his ears and did so with a simple charm to keep his hands free for tying and re-tying.

It blocked out most noises, making the cry of the bird no more than a whisper. That meant most everything else was beyond his scope of hearing but he didn’t much mind.

“Told you it was dying.” It was one of the first things he’d said when he got to class. Was he smug about being right? Not particularly. It was a dying bird, not a new skateboard trick nor the latest chapter of a favourite comic that he’d managed to predict. Kodee watched for as long as his attention span held up before looking to the other birds.

“When are they going?”

Wait. Was her answer completely far off the grid? Or was it so "on-point" that it rendered Nostredame speechless because apparently grown adults were uncomfortable talking about poop. Honestly, Carsyn wasn't really sure what but thinking she was the 'disgusting one' in her dorm was hardly true cause has he met Cora Dredworth? Probably. The girl showered once a year and let's not talk about the rat's nest on top her head. Really. Poop was clean compared to that girl. Yet despite it all, Carsyn still found the girl endearing/entertaining.

No time to dwell though on her poop answer because of what happened next. Cover ears. Uh .......... eyes widening and she heard it for a brief second before jamming her fingers into her ears, scrunching up her face. The fingers did no good because in the second that she heard the screeching through uncovered ears it allowed the ringing to perpetrate and enough that she could still hear it even when her ears were plugged. Was it over? Did he have something for the pain for both the bird AND them cause this was going to cause a headache for certain.

Kaiser had been quite content to sit and stew in his thoughts for a while, as all the other answers and associated responses washed over him. That glazed look which was reserved mostly for lessons at school was back, as he stared off into the middle distance.

It was the warning that had drawn Kaiser's attention again, snapped his focus right back to the professor - he was, after all, finely attuned to the tone in a person's voice. Kaiser was slightly slow on the uptake - it had been an unexpected request, especially given Kaiser was not exactly known for his ability to identify magical birds - but had nevertheless started to bring his hands to his ears... when the bird started to scream.

Kaiser stared at it as a jumble of backwards voices poured from the creature's open beak, his own among them. He realised, then, what it was, and what it was doing. A Jobberknoll, doing its terrible end of life scream. Kaiser's hands, which had been hovering near his head as though he'd been about to press them over his ears, lowered again, and he clenched his fists in his lap instead. He kept watching the Jobberknoll, forced his eyes to stay trained to it.

It broke his heart, and he didn't want to look at it at all, didn't want to think about it, but he made himself. Kaiser would not look away. He wouldn't cover his ears, even though the sound drilled into his brain - was that the screeching of other birds? - and shook him to his core. It deserved to be heard and seen, so Kaiser would hear the bird's cry and he would see its final moments, even though it hurt.

Even though it hurt.

Isla just nodded once to silently thank the professor for commenting that her answer was a good one. She was simply listening to what the others had to say, when a movement from one of the birds caught her eye and got her attention. Her eyes flickered from the bird to the professor and back again.

Uhhh...what?! The Jobberknoll was actually dying? Right here in class? Isla's little eleven-year-old eyes did not want to see this! Nor did her ears, which she promptly covered just before the creature sprang into action. She wished the sound would have been completely blocked out just by covering her ears, but she could still hear it.

She hated to think it. She really, really, really did, but it was actually interesting to hear every single sound this bird had ever heard coming out of its mouth backwards. Even still, the first year had, at some point, squeezed her eyes shut and had yet to open them. "Is it...dead yet?" she asked. In other words, could she look now?

While Nostredame talked, Lucas tried to note down as much as he could. OWLs, you know? Something that kept being brought up, no matter how hard he tried to ignore it. But that didn’t stop him from noticing the Professor’s smile, teeth and all. Had he done that on purpose? He didn’t know. All he knew was that he liked that smi-

Uh? What??

The look on his face instantly turned to one of confusion. The bird was starting to move? He didn’t understand. What was it planning on doing? And why was Nostredame telling them to cover their ears? Why was that-

........... Oh.

Oh no. Oh no oh no oh no.

The Jobberknoll was DYING?!?!

As soon as the realisation hit him, Lucas slapped his hands over his ears. A sense of dread and panic settled in but he was trying not to think about any of that. Not when something big was going to happen right in front of him. And the scariest part - at least, for him - was that he didn’t know how this would make him feel. At all.

And then the bird started screaming.

The sound was muffled, but not blocked out completely. He could still pick up the sound of conversation, of the stream of water, of what seems like chirping? Whatever it was, it was enough to stir up some emotion within the fifth year. His heart started to feel heavy and the sound of it’s beating was competing with the muffled sounds from the Jobberknoll’s scream. A part of him wanted to look away but a larger part of him found that he couldn’t take his eyes away from the bird, no matter how hard he tried.

Another feeling settled in amongst the abundance of things going on: an overwhelming feeling. The screams, the quick changes, the strong feelings......... it was all becoming too much. He didn’t know when he’d stopped registering the sounds or when the tears had started to fall from his eyes. All he knew was that this was a sad event and he wasn’t prepared for it in the slightest.

Carys hadn’t offered anything regarding signs of animals aging mostly due to the fact the main one she knew was going grey. She remembered her mum’s older dog vaguely, and the grey had been really obvious on a black dog. Plus, the whole discussion had sent her into a bit of a spiral of imagining when Gwydion would get old and die. It was easier to stay quiet and take notes, along with adding a few sketches of the birds in the negative space of her notes. Decidedly not including whatever her sister was going off about regarding fecal matter in any of it because she had no idea what that was about. Unless it was related to Cora.

Having noticed the slight movement from Cole, she had been about to offer her notes when the instruction to cover their ears had registered and her blue eyes had snapped back toward the bird in the professor’s hand, pulling her sleeves down over her hands before clamping them over her ears. Hopefully the fabric would act like earmuffs. Earmuffs worked against mandrakes, so maybe…unfortunately the theory wasn’t working quite as well as she’d hoped, although it muffled the sound well enough. That and she hoped never to hear a sound like that death cry ever again, as her eyes went to the cage holding the other birds.
