Default Care of Magical Creatures Lesson ❧

CARE OF MAGICAL CREATURES LESSON

The Care of Magical Creatures are was still a renovation in progress. The grass was overgrown and patchy like a checkered quilt knitted by someone who had no business owning a pair of knitting needles. While the creatures had, by this point in time, mostly reaccumulated to their Hogwarts home, Mathys found himself convinced that the very vegetation of the grounds had turned wild in the absence of wizarding kind.

Though such sentiments were wasted on the next hour and a half ahead. There was important lessons to be learned and a very special creature for students to engage with.

A hodgepodge assortment of wooden crates and hale bales lay in a circular formation around a central table where a decorative bronze birdcage sat and dotted within the cage a few small birds with elegant blue speckled feathers that caught the afternoon sun just so. Though something seemed amiss with them. One in particular who was not hopping from branch like the others, but rather had nestled itself to the floor of the cage.

Mathys himself stands beside the cage wearing bold robin’s egg blue robes that helped highlight his frosty, yet some how soft, stare.

Come on in and take a seat on any of the bails of hay or crates. The lesson will begin shortly.

Even a month into the term, Heath still wasn't sure what to make of Care of Magical Creatures. He'd enjoyed the lessons so far, and he liked animals in general - the cute, cuddly ones. Not so much the big, scary ones. He found they were a lot easier to interact with than people. Creatures wouldn't judge him for being too shy or too awkward. Still, there was something about the professor that Heath found a bit… unsettling. He didn't know why; all he knew was that he didn't want to know what would happen if he made Professor de Nostredame angry! Thus, he strived to be on his best behavior for this class.*

Heath didn't pay any mind to the overgrown grounds as he made his way to the lesson. After a month at Hogwarts, it started to seem normal. Besides, he was too busy concentrating on not saying or doing the wrong thing… that and plucking up the courage to greet the professor. He managed to look the man in the eye for the briefest of moments as he said, "H-hello, Professor." He wasn't going to even try greeting him in French! Knowing him, he'd get all tongue-tied, mangle the pronunciation, and accidentally insult him.

With that out of the way, Heath scurried off to the nearest hay bale and took a seat. Once he was settled, he noticed the birds in the cage, and his eyes were immediately drawn to the one bird that wasn't hopping around with all the others. Poor thing… was it sick? Maybe it was just shy. If that was the case, Heath could relate!

Birds.... those where the first thing Jillian saw when she stepped into class. Birds were not really something she's a fond of because of those beaks. So today she needs to step up because by the looks of it, they will be talking about birds for Care of Magical Creatures. Of course, Professor Mathys is looking flawless as ever- must be the French water but this teacher is gorgeous. "Bonjour, Professor" she smiled at him "You're looking really nice today" well, he looks really nice everyday.

Jillian took a seat next to a fellow sixth year (Nora) and gave her a smile as well. "Hi" she whispered softly.

Louise was very intrigued by the French man that came back to Hogwarts with them. She often wondered what had happened to make him switch loyalties. That's what it seemed, anyway, since it had been fairly obvious that the French didn't like them at their school much.

Approaching the area for the class, Louise's interests shifted to the birds in the cage and the young Gryffindor did her best to sit as close to them as possible, green eyes wide and curious. She hoped it wasn't ill. That would have been poor lesson...

Oh. "Oh, hello, Professor," she said finally, remembering that she had forgotten to greet him.

Naya was rushing to get to class. Care of Magical Creatures was one of her favorite classes and she couldn’t wait to see what the lesson would bring today. When she arrived, she noticed that the area was full of students. Was she late? She hoped not.

“Hello Professor”, she said, as she passed the man in charge. Naya headed for the nearest empty hay bale and sat down. Letting out a deep breath, She was relieved that she had made it. Putting down her backpack she tried to prepare herself for class, which was sure to begin any minute.

The Gryffindor made his way out to where the lesson was being held, re-tying his tie as he walked which left for a somewhat slower gait than the boy typically employed. He'd been fine to leave it how it was (untied and slung over his shoulder), but the Headmaster had made him promise to fix it with the threat of a detention when he least wanted it. Again and again Kodee worked at the tie, thinking it was off somehow no matter how he did it.

Maybe he was being picky. Maybe he was hyper-fixating. Either way, the tie was yanked from his neck again as he approached. "How's it going, Professor?" His greeting casual as anything before drifting over to the cage with the hopping little birds. The squinted at them, even as his hands went to fixing his tie once more. "Think one of your birds is dying."

He'd have flicked the cage with his fingers to be sure but they were currently occupied.

But then...he paused to look around and it suddenly hit him. "Where is everyone? Was class cancelled? Aw man, I walked all the way." Could no one have TOLD him before he wasted his time?
……...this monsieur.

Mathys could not say he was a fan. Although the boy remarkably had something worthwhile to say as he approached. Short lived as the tale was.

You are merely early, Monsieur Chosen,” he assured the robust Gryffindor.

Bernie took out her journal for notes and decided to doodle what she saw. It was mostly just a drawing of Kodee Chosen at the moment....
Ah, a mademoiselle that Mathys had grown rather fond of in light of how the previous term had unraveled. Though he found himself questioning her choices as she took a seat. “Mademoiselle Grantham,” he greeted with a tight smile. “Can we be expecting you by ze barns again soon?” For another serenade, perhaps?

Mademoiselle Jenovick,” he greeted with a nod.

She seated herself politely next to Bernie before shifting over and squishing the girl with her hip. "Whatcha drawing? Oh. Looks like an octopus with a fungus. Very nice."
Mademoiselle James was a spirited little creature of whom one never quite knew what would come forth from her mouth. The commentary on "his" grass, however, warranted a wry chuckle. "I will have a worth weeth Professor Fuller-Thompson to see what can be done."

He needed several words with that man regardless.

"I am Monsieur Simpson," Mathys affirmed with a slight sigh. He was not sure how the first years, or faint of heart, would handle this lesson. At least the initial stage of it.

Today's focus didn't look too dangerous, though, aside from the bird at the bottom of the cage. "Hello, Professor," she said, but her gaze hadn't left the bird at the bottom of the cage. "Is it sick?" She had no idea why birds hung out at the bottom of their cages, but she knew it wasn't for good reasons.

After her greeting and quick question, she found a spot amidst the hay bales and crates and waited for class to start. She hadn't missed the comment about one of the birds dying. Was it? She didn't know, but she really hoped the professor hadn't brought in a dying bird today.
"What ails him is not sickness, Mademoiselle Bellchant," he assured her with another tight lipped smile.

Either way, at least COMC wasn’t canceled like Quidditch had been this term, even if the grounds were still a bit overgrown.

“Bonjour, Professor de Nostradame,” she said, giving him a smile as she arrived inside the circle of seating and took a crate for herself, sending a concerned look toward the cage of birds. There seemed like there’d be enough space on the crate if her sister chose to attend too. Or anyone else who wanted a seat, really. She just hoped the birds were okay.
Mathys would be tickled by the thought of being considered a spy. But rest assured mademoiselle, he was not of that breed.

"Bonsoir, mademoiselle." He found himself rather pleased that Hogwarts had seen fit to award her the honor of becoming a prefect for her house.

That was what he needed to do. It was fine.

He was fine.

He arrived at the Care of Magical Creatures lesson looking as frowny and preoccupied as he usually did as of late - more so, even, as things were not necessarily improving. Casting only the briefest glance at the cage and the birds that inhabited it, he drifted over to sit by Kodee. Naturally.

"Afternoon," Kaiser mumbled in the direction of Nostredame, barely audible, but there was at least an attempt at politeness. He was clearly distracted. By a lot of things, yes, and a moment later, by Kodee's fiddling with his school tie as well.
As long as the 'frowny' exterior did not interfere with the young man's participation in lessons, Mathys saw no need to worry. It was almost a relief, in a matter of speaking, to find himself without the additional obligations required when caring for his own house. However, the quiet boy's increasingly reclusive outlook reminded him of some concerning behavior involving a broken hearted hippogriff.

Add it to the list of concerns to raise with the Slytherin head of house during their bi-weekly patrol of the Forbidden Forest.

"Bonsoir, Monsieur Kaiser."

Maybe this was part of the lesson, making it seem well again.

He bit his tongue regarding him told recently that he showcased a lack of care with certain creatures. The irony, but Curtis was in a pleasant mood, smiling at the thought, "Bonjour, Professor.... that is an extravagate set of robes, sir. Are those custom-made?" He asked. It was very rich and elegant looking. Maybe his dad would like them. Could garner him enough attention.

Curtis eventually set off to sit at one of the bales.
This one.

The professor would not shame nor otherwise call out the boy in such a public setting, but Mathys would continue to be unimpressed with him until proven beyond a reason that he should not be. First impressions were important.

The obvious buttering up tactic regarding his robes was, however, well received.

"Zey are. Zank you for noticing."

It was yet another deterrent, as Nina never enjoyed Care of Magical Creatures to begin with. She much preferred learning from their textbook. The class was far .... too practical and entirely useless in the real world.

Nevertheless, she did make her way towards her classmates. Stopping to acknowledge Professor Nostredame with a look. She had no intention of going near him for a greeting as he was standing far too close to the caged birds. No thank you. She'd stay as far away from those as possible. Which is why she strategically chose her ... crate to be at the furthest distance possible.
A most peculiar mademoiselle, this one.

Though he returned her look with one of his own, otherwise paying no further heed to the distressed brunette.

"Good afternoon, sir." She greeted in French as she walked past the professor. It was nice to be able to speak her native language sometimes, though of course the class was taught in English. She took a seat on a wooden crate and observed the birdcage on the table.
It was always a pleasant surprise to hear his mother tongue spoken with such ease here at Hogwarts. Last term he had snottily taken all attempts from Hogwarts students to speak it to him as a means of brown nosing or otherwise gain favor with him, a mistake he would not admit to beyond the internal.

"Bonsoir, Mademoiselle Morin."

Or worse sick?
Ah yes, the ever well intended Monsieur Vance. He greeted the Gryffindor with a pointed inclination of the head before glancing inside the cage again.

Today, Claudine was not amongst the very first to arrive but when she did, her gaze immediately fell on the birds in the cage. It took her a second extra to realise that they were… off. But why?

That piercing gaze moved to de Nostredame. “Good afternoon, Professor.’’ She said nothing about the birds as she was certain classmates before her had pointed out the obvious. Instead, Claudine made her way to a bale of hay to perch on.

Away from everyone, of course.
Secretly, he was displeased seeing this mademoiselle in his class. But if nothing else, the de Nostredame name knew how to keep a cool and collected exterior.

His own poignant gaze met her own, a silent warning to behave nestled in its cool pools, as he greeted her. "Mademoiselle Blaze."

The Ravenclaw filed his thoughts away when he finally approached the makeshift seats forming a circle around the table. He eyed the birdcage for a second before looking up at the professor. "Good afternoon, sir," Drewett greeted before seeing Nina and taking a seat crate beside her.

Hi, Nina. Interesting seat of choice, conveniently far away from the professor and the cage. He'd have done the same, to be honest, so he was glad he had a friend to sit with.
"Monsieur Gunter," he greeted the seventh year politely, a brow raised in slight curiosity at his seating placement.

The only saving grace for this, in Ewan’s mind at least, was the fact that at least some of the magical creatures may now prefer the conditions.

Walking towards the wooden crates and hale bales, his eyes were instantly drawn towards the decorative bronze birdcage that sat on the table in the centre, a small smile appearing now. “Hello Professor, are we going to be taking care of these birds?” his mind instantly going back to some of the previous lessons from this term on how to take care of infant and adolescent animals. Sure, he was used to looking after muggle animals more than magical creatures but still, he had at least some idea of what to do.
Mathys shook his head. "Not these birds, no," he replied stoically. "Though we will be observing them to start."

There was no sense in not answering inquiries of this nature for the sake of keeping a lesson a mystery. At least not in this case.

Once too close to the site, she saw the bird cages and the creatures inside them. She always liked birds, birds never really liked her, but maybe this would be a good lesson about their behavior, going a little deep.

"Good day, professor. " She greeted Professor De Nostradame with a grin and a light bow of her head then immediately headed to sit next to Carsyn.

"Hello Professor de Nostredame," The second year greeted cheerfully when she arrived, her gaze shifting from the elegant man to the cage nearby. The birds were so cute, did he know? "Their feathers kind of go with your robes. Did you coordinate on purpose?" That was VERY fashion forward of him.

Spotting Phoebe and Bernie, the second year made her way over and took a seat nearby, offering the two of them a smile and a wave. She chanced a glance at the drawing Phoebe was talking about and nodded her head solemnly in agreement. An octopus with a fungus indeed.
If Mathys were to have selected a favorite among the Hogwarts students to have had the honor of gracing his teachings last term, he may very well select Mademoiselle Summers. Though it was a tight-knit lock between her and Mademoiselle Grantham. Now, looking back, he could have a good chuckle about the Aguamenti incident and now have it fall harshly on his conscience.

"I did indeed, Mademoiselle Summers," he boasted with a subtly rise of his chest. "Very astute of you."

5 points to Gryffindor? It was by far his favorite compliment of the hour.

"Hello Professor"

It was nice to see that he had come to Hogwarts, she had liked his last term and her thoughts had gone to the last term until she turned to find a seat. There they were, both of them together. Her feet turned to go to a seat away, but she stopped. How was she ever going to be noticed if she didn't put herself out there?

Headed towards them she put a huge smile on her face. "Hey guys, mind if I sit over here near you?" That sounded stupid, didn't it, she thought. Why did she not have anything cool or hip to say. What would even be cool or hip to say in class?

Was there time to go hide or run?
Mademoiselle McCarthy was another gentle spirit that Mathys had grown fond of and he found himself watching her for a little after returning her grreeting and as she went to find her seat. A curious wrinkle forming on his own handsome features by the exchange.

Wading through the overgrown grass, uh, took some time and made him look like he was stomping the grass more than anything. But this was immediately forgotten about the moment he approached the class and saw that face. See? Concentrating. It was....... difficult.

"Bonjour, Professor," he said, offering the man a small smile. He wanted to make a comment, maybe say that he liked the robes he was wearing, but a large part of him wanted to hide, instead, so he didn’t. Instead, he moved to take a seat on a random hay bale in a random spot that he wasn’t paying any attention to.

Maybe he could try and concentrate on the birds now. Maybe.
"Bonsoir, Monsieur Dakest," he greeted the boy with a smile that just briefly revealed a glimpse of his perfect pearly whites.

Mathys had the impression that he made this young Ravenclaw nervous, though the man was hard pressed to understand why that would be. Though, he supposed, he did have an awe inspiring presence with his fashion forward looks and general air about him.

"Bonsoir, Monsieur Jonea."

"Merci, Mademoiselle Kim," he smiled, almost, warmly at the Slytherin prefect. He had often found her to be polished and well put together, very worthy for leadership in that particular house. As far as his knowledge went.

Oh. "Oh, hello, Professor," she said finally, remembering that she had forgotten to greet him.

Mathys was just about to clear his throat, a wry smile on his face, when the young mademoiselle corrected her behavior. An acknowledgement in some form was only polite.

"Oh, bonsoir, Mademoiselle Bones," he replied stiffly.

"It's NOT an octopus," Bernie declared first of all, but second of all, was pretty happy to have people sitting by her. Pheebz and Cece weren't her usual companions in this class (that honor still belonged to Claudine), but she felt happy, and like she had friends, to have them sit beside her.

Anyway, she didn't tell them what she WAS drawing Kodee Chosen wearing a tophat. Instead, she flipped her notebook to a new page, so that she could write stuff down as de Nostredame talked.

"Of course!" she'd responded brightly to the professor. She had to see what was new in the stables this term. And she'd quite liked visiting the horsies. :3

Class was starting now, and of course Bernie was admiring the professor's robes like everyone else. She wondered if he was fishing for compliments or guiding them toward the right answer here?

Hmm. He was being very... delicate with that bird.

"I've read that you can tell the age of horses by looking at their teeth," she answered, hand raised. "I bet this is also true for abraxans? And aethonans? And granians?" It was probably true of all the horsies they had in the stables here.

Alexandre was there of course. Had been there the whole time of course of course. He had been watching the birds in front of them. One of them looked a bit sad, and he was feeling sorry for it. Was it okay? When the lesson started and the professor started talking about age and things like that it occurred to him that it was probably just old and not as energetic as the young ones. He thought about how to answer the question, what other signs of aging there were. He knew what that would look like in people of course, but not many animals. But he thought that he knew enough and raised his hand. "Professor, some creatures, like people, start getting gray hair when they get older."

A very peculiar mademoiselle, indeed!!!!! Let the record show that she did not want to be here right now, or ever. It was her least favorite class and the overgrown grass only made matters so much worse. Despite all of this, however, she gave a small smile to Drewett when he chose the next crate over. She didn’t mind sitting alone (she minded a lot), but fortunately she wouldn’t have to. Drewett’s company was always a delight.

A few things happened next that made Nina want to disengage entirely. The first being that their Professor had asked ‘who would like to share’ and? Nina? Would not like to share. So with all due respect, she chose not to offer up an answer to his question. He had asked if she would like to, and the answer was no. So. The second strange thing to happen was that Professor Nostredame almost put his mouth on the bird, which was GROSS! And the third thing was the whispering. Which all things considering? Was very strange.

Of course she kept all of these thoughts to herself, though she did turn to look at Drewett with concern. Surely he would understand.

Innnnteresting, they were talking about the AGE of creatures. Was the age of this bird deceiving? GASP. Was it a phoenix? Because technically phoenix's could be VERY old, but they were so often reborn that they could LOOK like a baby. Ooooh, she hoped she was right.

Louise raised her hand. "Baby kittens are born with their eyes closed. And they stay closed for, like, a week. So you know a kitten is less than a week or so old if their eyes are still shut." She knew this because her mum's cat had babies a while ago, and she got to take one of her kittens and keep her after she was born. It had been quite fascinating.

So the Jobberknoll wasn't sick? "Oh, well, that's good! That the Jobberknoll isn't sick, I mean," she answered. She really had no idea what else to think. Maybe it was going to be a mother bird or something? Whatever it was would be revealed soon, so Isla didn't say another word as she waiting for things to begin.

She was really distracted by the professor's robes. She hadn't noticed them before, but now that he was wandering around the circle while flipping them around, they were all she could focus on. That is, until the cages were opened, and the birds landed along the man's arm. This was starting to look like something out of a professional ballet dance or something. Or maybe that was just Isla's overactive imagination. She was having a super hard time focusing...

She did catch on to the fact that maybe the Jobberknoll she thought was sick was probably just aging. That kind of made sense, too. Hopefully it wouldn't start screaming out every sound it had ever heard backwards right here in front of them! When a question was asked, it distracted her from possible dying birds for the time-being. She finally managed to come up with a response and raised her hand. "In young birds, their eye colors are really dark, and they supposedly lighten up as they age," she said.

The Idea Man Kori-Kins

Tom was really confused about the animal, was there a problem with it. He watched as the Professor took it out of it's cage very carefully, he had listened to the question and was now trying to rattle his brain for an answer, there was a few he could give.

Tom after deciding to settle on one answer, raised his hand and sighed. "Professor when my Grandpa, got older, he started to forget things, like he would have made a cup of tea, but then would forget about it seconds later and make another one." Tom hoped that didn't happened to him.

He certainly hoped not. The French man would prefer to keep those interactions to staff meetings and other such obligations.

Avalon couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at Nostredame's odd response to her arrival. Had he mistaken her for another student? As far as she was aware, her attendance was still perfect. Sure, she had considered missing Potions last week when she woke up with a nasty head cold, but she forged her way down the Dungeons anyway. And she hadn't missed a CoMC class yet. Perhaps he was confused with her introduction to the Gryffindor next to her? She had seen the girl in lessons before, but she hadn't yet made a formal introduction. And as far as Avalon remembered, they hadn't learned about whatever birds were in the cage yet. The Ravenclaw simply asked Charlie if she had ever heard of them.

"Just kidding around, Professor," Avalon answered with a nervous laugh. She didn't really feel like explaining herself, and Nostredame definitely wasn't one she wanted to cross.

When the professor asked about signs of aging, she immediately thought of one of her favorite magical creatures - unicorns. Avalon raised her hand. "Unicorns are born gold. They turn silver when they're about two or three years old. And they don't turn white until they're fully grown." She couldn't remember at exactly what year they were fully grown, though.

Was it not still slightly early for 'bonsoir'? Filed under: things Kaiser thought but did not say. Even if he had been up for making conversation, he wasn't about to question people on their word choices. He was very much living in a glass house, in that regard.

For the remainder of the time before the lesson started, Kaiser had taken to messing with his own school tie, perhaps subconsciously mirroring Kodee. He wasn't trying to retie it or anything though, just fiddling with the ends of it. When Nostredame spoke to address the entire class, Kaiser dragged his gaze that way.

... So. Care of Magical Creatures could sometimes be a bit tricky for Kaiser, on account of how he had spent a long time keeping his distance from even mundane animals. Not that he didn't like them - he'd wanted a dog for the longest time, for all kinds of reasons - but, even as a child, had been so scared of getting attached and then losing his animal companion in some way or another that he had avoided any such attachment in the first place. Not to mention... certain practical obstacles. The point was... he was woefully lacking in general creature knowledge, and only had what he knew from classes and homework.

In the end, he decided to go for a general answer, rather than identify a specific creature. Eyeing the bird in Nostredame's hands, he let go of his tie with one hand and half raised it. "Most-" All? He didn't know. "-creatures have a lot less energy when they grow old. They might become tired, or weak."

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Claudine didn’t know what that look was about but she didn’t dwell on it. In fact, she hadn’t paid de Nostredame any more attention after greeting him. Instead, her gaze moved from student to student, most often lingering on Bernie. Her friend? seemed to be getting along just fine without having her, Claudine, around. Then again, that was Bernie; popular and fun and the opposite of Claudine. She was just surprised that Blake wasn’t tagging along with her.

Claudine finally drew her attention away from Bernie. The lesson was about to begin. Aging? Ailment? Yes, those little creatures certainly looked both. Though her expression remained stoic, Claudine was a little sad for the birds. They looked just a bit helpless and it hurt her. She was drawn to creatures a lot more than she was to humans. The Snakette was more interested on the one not on de Nostredame’s extended arm.

When the first question came, Claudine raised her hand. When her turn came, she volunteered, “Their skin might sag.’’

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Fiona had heard answers regarding mammals and decided on a different approach when it came to her answer. She deliberated for a few moments, running her mind through any snippets of information she might have before raising her hand. "If my memory is doing me justice, I believe you can tell the age of a clam by the number of rings it has. A bit like a tree, really."

Blake wasn't 100% certain what the creature in front of him was, seeing as he had very little experience with the creatures of a magical kind. But he was happy to hear that it wasn't sick... and from the sounds of it .. just old.

He searched his brain for an answer, what did he know about aging in animals either young or old. And the thought about his dog growing up. "Well, I know some animals get grey around the muzzle area when they age, and the start to move slower, or are unable to jump like they used to." Even though he has referencing his very non magical dog, he assumed it worked from magical crups and other animals to.

Drewett understood, Nina. Of course he did, and he wasn't going to prod her to speak up in class if she didn't. Verbal participation wasn't always necessary, he believed, as long as they took notes in class. That's how this Ravenclaw usually learned, to listen quietly and jot down notes. He responded to her look with a smile and a gentle nudge of his elbow. All good, though he wasn't sure it applied to the professor.

Speaking of, Drewett gave the question some thought. He tried to reflect on his own pets at home, and he briefly considered owl behaviour as they aged—a lot of which have been mentioned by other students. He felt he must deviate from winged creatures. Then that was when he thought of Bertha, the family dog. Well, who was their family dog. The house still felt empty without her.

The seventh year then raised his hand. "From experience, Professor, dogs start losing their appetite as they age," Drewett shared while simultaneously filing away his sad feels about Bertha.

Ohhh he was confused by her thank you. Well it wasn't ordinary for one to thank someone but it was a memorable greeting and Carsyn was always down for being memorable. She smiled at Nostredame before explaining briefly, "Yes, thank you. For the afternoon lesson." It wasn't their first lesson and creatures lessons seemed to be in the afternoon thus far this year, but she wanted to express her gratitude irregardless in case he decided to spring them a loop next week with an early morning lesson.

As far as the lesson went, the fifth year had to strain to decipher within his accent. One would think after a year of listening to it she would be able to easily identify what he was talking about, yet Carsyn found herself concentrating intensely on his words. How to identify age of another living creature?

Chewing her lip, a lot of her peers seemed to offer up answers she knew but there had to be more, didn't they? Creature didn't have rings like trees like that one Slytherin girl was suggesting ... did they??

"Could you perhaps use their fecal samples? I know, for instance that fresh droppings are darker in color compared to when they've been sitting awhile... but maybe frequency of creatures pooping?" Opportunity to talk about poo without it being inappropriate - Carsyn was definitely taking that chance!

♣ Heejin here | Did somebody say coffee & cakes? | cat lover ♣

A smile formed on her lips when the professor thanked her for the greeting. She sat quietly on her seat and casually gives a glance at the students entering one by one until the professor started his lesson. Ahh yes, that dreamy accent. Jillian enjoys listening to that.

Descriptive qualities to identify the age of another creature.
Hmmm...

One thing she knows about are cats since they've had cats for as long as she can remember but qualities in aging on any type creature seems to be the same, this includes them. Not all of the creatures but certainly most, right? Humans age faster (or shorter) than witches but they all still age. Clearing her throat she raised her hand to answer "Physical changes are always present such as the skin becoming all wrinkly and saggy. Also there is a reduce in activity because their muscles and bones aren't strong as it used to be" she uttered. Isn't sad though? She doesn't want her cats to age but that's nature.

Waaaaaait. Wasn't astute a type of triangle or something? Cecelia wasn't sure what that had to do with HER, but the professor seemed pretty pleased about it, so she simply grinned and gave him a thumbs-up for good measure.

The fact that Bernie WASN'T actually drawing an octopus was news, but the blonde mouthed an 'OHHHHHH' and nodded her head in acknowledgement of the correction. She knew if SHE was drawing not an octopus and someone thought it was, she'd want to correct them, too. She got it.

The birds REALLY seemed to like their professor and she didn't blame them, really. He was nice to look at and she BET he took good care of them. You could tell that sort of thing about a person, you could. Her eyes remained fixed on his hands as he carefully picked up the saddest looking bird of the bunch, and Cece wondered if it was sick. It made her kind of sad, but she tried not to dwell on it too much, 'specially now that she had a question to answer.

"A phoenix starts looking sort of worn out when it gets older and closer to its burning day. Their feathers fall out and everything. I suppose that could be true of LOTS of older creatures, as well as people. They could lose feathers or hair or fur when they get old."

”Early?” The boy pulled a face, feeling that to be even worse than having class cancelled. What did he look like, a Ravenclaw? Merlin, he needed to do better. Next thing you know, they’d be expecting him to turn in his homework on time. Couldn’t have that. Couldn’t have .... this whole situation. He’d work harder at it in future. This would likely not happen again.

Kodee straightened some from his position of looking at the dying bird when Kaiser walked over, giving him a bro nod. Bernie got a hello and a request to see her fungus octopus after class because that’s what Phoebe said she was drawing and depending on how it turned out, the 7th year figured it could’ve been cool looking. Worth a laugh, if nothing else.

“What Kaiser said, we don’t mind.” Chloe could sit there if she wanted, he was neither here nor there about it and being Gunnar’s little sister, he was more inclined to be nice—inviting even.

As the class began, Kodee gave up on his tie, allowing it to simply hang loose and untied about his neck. He’d get to it later. It would likely only distract him and Merlin knew how easily distracted he was on his OWN.

A hand jutted up at the question. “On the same note of sight Louise mentioned, you can tell something’s getting on in age when it starts losing sight. Eyes stop being what they used to be and the next thing you know, you’re waltzing right onto the dinner plate of the next creature that thinks you’re delicious.”

Was he the only one who wished the man had adapted to castle culture? Back in France, he was fancy but this was Hogwarts. They had cobwebs coming out of coffee cups. Dude was trying waaaay too hard.

dream until your • dreams come true ~ Human pygmy puff

It was time for class to begin and the professor began to speak. Naya had been in such a hurry to make it to class, she hadn’t even taken a moment to notice the birds. Astute observational skills. Well apparently Naya did not deserve that complement today. How could she have missed the cages full of blue birds? When they flew out and landed on the professor’s arm, it reminded her of a bird that her grandmother had once. Naya then watched as the professor gently and carefully removed one bird from its cage. Was it sick? Old? She would have to wait to find out the answer to that question.

In the meantime, there was a question to think about. How to identify the age of a creature. Did he mean specifically or generally? It would be rather hard to guess or figure out a creature’s actual age. Getting the general neighborhood of the age might be a little easier. Too bad that animals were not like trees. You could look at their rings and figure out exactly how old they were.

Coming up with an answer that she hoped was good, Naya raised her hand. “Some people may start to lose their hair when they get older.” Although some people with thinning or balding hair chose to hide it with wigs, hairpieces and weaves......so you may not get that clue.

She sure hoped not.

Taking a seat on a crate next to a first year Gryffindor (Charlie) she recognized from her other lessons, she gave de Nostredame a friendly smile. "Good day, Professor!" Turning to the girl next to her, she stuck out her hand. "I'm not sure that we've officially met yet, but I'm Avalon." She tilted her head to the cage at the front. "Do you have any idea what kind of bird that is?" she asked curiously.
Charlie turned her head at the sound of someone sitting beside her. She was kind of surprised but that was mostly because she felt like she hadn't made any friends yet. What was she supposed to do just force people to be her friend by tying them up. No that wouldn't do.But she could make her face more friendly by smiling she supposed.

Feeling her cheeks grow tight with a smile she watched as the girl stuck her hand out. Charlie felt like maybe she should talk to her. Grasping her hand she smiled, "Nice to meet you Avalon. I'm Charlotte. You can call me Charlie." she turned her head to look at the bird in the cage, not even slightly sure of what it was, "I have absolutely no idea what kind of bird that is. But i'm really hoping that its not dying or dead." She shivered a bit because that would hurt her soul.

Charlie turned her attention back to Professor Nostredame as he spoke, not trying to be rude to Avalon, but she absolutely did not need to feel the wrath of the pretty professor. Raising her hand, using the manners she tried to have, she was ready to answer, "Memory can go. Your pets or animals might not recognize you any more." Her voice grew softer, "or people will start to forget who you are when they get old." She had heard it was a terrible thing and had seen it a time or two.

Puff by day, snake by night | Mj's bestie | Always UP to Something...

It was a success, her reaching out and actually going over to them, it had worked! She asked if she could sit by them and they said yes. Kaiser even had moved things to have a seat next to him. She felt even more nervous as she beamed at them both and took a seat. "Thank you" was all she got out before the professor started.

Sitting down she did try to concentrate, she really did, but her eyes and her mind kept going to the fact that she was sitting right next to Kaiser and Kodee was so close to. Maybe they would work in pairs of three, maybe they would let her work with them. They had seen her in class before so she didn't know what she was feeling like such an immature girl over this, but here she was being a third year with a crush.

Shaking her head she tried to focus and even pulled out parchment for notes, but she realized that people were answering a question, they even were answering the question, and she didn't know what that question even was.
