Barns and Pastures

https://img.nickpic.host/qn6N1O.jpg

One of the areas on the grounds Professor Amstern encourages students to get comfortable visiting is the barns, with the connecting pastures nearby. The barn is conveniently located by the magical aviary and the meadow clearing in which Care of Magical Creatures is held when the weather is good. Within the barn an array of magical creatures can be located, ranging from flobberworms to the winged horses and hippogriffs to everything in between; magical and mundane alike. This is also where specially approved pets are housed during the school term.

The inside of the barn is spacious in order for the creatures to feel most comfortable. Each has their own stall specially designed for them. One might notice in the Abraxan area an empty stall that's been decorated as if ready for a new occupant, with a stallion and a rather rotund mare from Professor Amstern’s farm on either side.

Most animals within the barn or pastures are rated X, XX, or XXX. Some animals reside in stalls, others are in coops or cubbies, some are in the loft above your head, and some are just regular mundane barn creatures. Please remember your skill level, year, and familiarity around animals when visiting the Barn and Pastures. If you have special permission to have a non-traditional pet, this is where it will stay during the school term.

If there was something other than photography that helped calm his spirits, it was tending to the school's abraxan. Eternally grateful that Professor Williamson had encouraged the interest and then Professors Paszek and Amstern continue to nurture it, the seventh year was eager to spend an afternoon here in the barns with them (and every other manner of winged horse as well). The bonus was that he would also get to spend time with his little-not-so-little cousin who, as far as the train ride had indicated, had taken the term therapy animal to a bit of an extreme. It wasn't exactly cow cuddling, but Cooper still found a real benefit to bonding with the winged creatures. Sure, there was the whole boosting oxytocin in the body that arguably arose...but building trust with such majestic creatures was soul nurturing. You really had to listen and be observant and this Ravenclaw felt as though he thrived best when such bonds were made.

Gathering his usual bucket and grooming brush, he made his way towards Apollo's stall where he had agreed to meet Kinsay and whistled while leaning against the gate. "Hey there, buddy," he smiled wide, clicking his tongue in the next moment while wafting a bit of single-malt whiskey mixed with his own handmade blend of carrot juice towards his creature bestie. Chuckling, Apollo seemed as keen to see Cooper as he was the beast, he did his best to hold the bucket stead while the abraxan shoved his muzzle and a good portion of his face into it. "Yeah, I feel you, mate," Cooper nodded while reaching over with his free hand and lovingly caressed Apollo's neck.

For Lily/Jesse!

There may be a new CoMC professor this term but that didn't change anything for Dahlia Donovan. If anything it made the Ravenclaw even more determined to prove herself and continue helping out on barns and pastures as she normally did. The creatures were most important and she visited them as often as she possibly could since her first year.

Today was going to be no different. Lia had every intention of visiting with the creatures and spending most of her day with them. Thank Merlin for weekends! The brightest of smiles was already on her face as she entered the barn. "Morning everyone, I'm back. How are you all today?"

As much as Kinsay enjoyed spending time with her favorite cousin, she wasn't in the mood for a life lesson today. And seeing how Cooper and life-lessons usually went hand-in-hand, she'd be doing everything in her power to avoid one today. Easy. Kinsay was good at avoiding things when it mattered the most, be it people, feelings, ... life-lessons. It was one of her many special talents.

As such, she came prepared with an arsenal of topics to throw Cooper's way as they tended to Apollo (who Kinsay still thought was just OKAY). Having left Jimothy behind in her dormitory (he seemed extra anxious today and Kins didn't want the abraxan to swallow him whole), she made her way to the predetermined meeting place and slowed down as she saw Cooper feeding Apollo something stinky.

Trying not to make a face, she offered her cousin a small smile because she was incessantly polite. "Professor Amstern must not feed him very well." Hi, cousin.

sweetpinkpixie 01-13-2022 09:05 AM

Listen. Listen. It wasn't intentional and it just came out naturally - not that he felt like Kinsay really ever truly listened to him on things but he reminded himself that he was just providing her with other perspectives she may not have considered. Lay out options so she could make a well-informed decision. Though, in the past, this tended to be more of the decisions of another certain little lioness...but he had noticed over time Kinsay's voice coming through more and more. It had been all he had wanted for since...well...ever.

And also...Cooper was much better about giving advice than he was taking it on himself. It was apparently a family trait.

His own head resting against Apollo's while the abraxan drank up, the Ravenclaw straightened when he heard her and chuckled lightly. "What makes you say that?"

Cooper quite liked Professor Amstern, after all, so where was this observation coming from?

Kinsay did listen! Always! And she was getting better at it every day too. She had been practicing really hard and reminded herself to stay in the moment and to think about perspectives and and and. Sure, sometimes she needed to step away from the moment in order to truly understand what had been said--processing on the spot wasn't easy--but even then, she listened.

She just ... opted not to follow his advice sometimes or a lot of times when she didn't want to. Cooper had good advice, usually, but good advice didn't necessarily equate to advice one wanted to take. And usually when Kins made her decisions, she felt really strongly about them. So it was hard to deter her from her path once she was set on it. But even then, there had been a lot of good growth.

(But if they could veer away from advice today, that'd be awesome.)

She watched as her Ravenclaw and his abraxan existed together in harmony. It was kind of nice if you forgot about all the gross smells. "Look at how hungry he is!" This, felt like a good indication that he was being starved. As it was, Care of Magical Creatures was not a subject Kinsay prevailed in on a practical level. The theory was easy. The practice? Not so much.

Serena has been sticking to her dorm for the past few weeks. Either that or the library. It was her little brother’s letter that shifted her mindset. In the letter he told her all about his school and his friends. He asked her about hers and added he hoped she was having fun. Did little Xavier worry about her? That made Serena feel bad. It wasn’t his job to worry.

So, she decided to break out of her cocoon and butterfly on. Not like a social butterfly, but a wandering one. Serena wasn’t the type to just go and talk to everyone and their mother.

The barn seemed like a nice place to go. It was occupied with creatures and they’re the best company. She drifted toward the hippogriff, but they were napping so she stepped away before they woke. Serena didn’t have a good reputation with them. At least not the ones in her town. Instead she went to hangout with the kneazles, who were more than happy for ear scratches.

Cairo really had no business being down here looking at all the various creatures that were held here. Sometimes he found himself just wandering the campus, even after all these years, just to avoid doing any sort of homework. Cairo wondered how his mum would feel if he brought home a bowtruckle or a flobberworm?! She might have a heart attack, Dad though.. he might die.. best not.

"youre just a little cutie, eh?" Cairo piped up looking down at the bowtruckles. The urge to have them wrap around his wrist and just make a home there. He just loved them so much!

he looked up at the sound of footsteps, "Hello?!" he looked up from the bowtruckles and around the barn to where the steps were coming from "Whos there?" he had been alone in here for what seemed like hours and it wasnt that he was opposed to another human but humans were scary sometimes.

Serena hadn't noticed anyone there. The hippogriffs had captured her attention right away. Her dad would shake his head at her for leaving her guard down. Oops. She became aware of another presence when they spoke. "I suppose, so," she replied to the cutie question. Her mum always said she was.

Picking up an extremely needy kneazle, Serena nuzzled it to her. "A ghost from you past," she said, hoping it'd scare the boy. She was bored so hopefully this would turn out eventful.

Cairo's eyes went wide as he looked down at the botruckle "did you just???" He blinked as it scurried along the pen they were in. "no i must be losing my marbles..." He looked up and around some more and saw the top of Serenas head over by the kneazles.

"You had me thinking i was losing me mind." He scooped up a bowtruckle and began to give it attention. "but i meant more for this little fellow... they're cute as a button, no?" Cairo held him up over the pen a bit for Serena for see.

"im also afraid i have far too many ghosts in my pasts to be comfortable with any of them arriving here." hed be the first one getting the heck up out of here if that were happening. "What about your ghosts?"

Oh, Merlin. Did he actually think the bowtruckle was talking to him? Serena almost laughed at how dumb that was. Bowtruckles can't talk!

"Maybe you are. Maybe I'm just a figment of your imagination and I don't actually exist," she said while petting the kneazle. She once played this on little Xavier and he went bonkers, crying to their parents that he didn't actually have a sister and he was imagining her. Mean, but funny. But mean. She didn't play it on him ever again. Wait, did he disagree with her? "They look like sticks. You don't think I'm cute?" she asked, frowning. Not that she cared. Serena knew her worth. She just wanted to see how he'd react.

Oooh. Cairo had ghosts, did he? "Do tell," she said, suddenly curious. He didn't seem like a person to have ghosts in their past, but you could never know with people nowadays. "My ghosts run from me." She left it there because she wanted to know about his.

He had long surrendered to the fact that he was not one of the people she put at the top of list of voices she followed, though sometimes he did not feel this was a bad thing considering the advice and people she did (or used to) follow she had done so blindly and their voice overpowering his little cousin's. Cooper had never been the sort to have the dominant voice. Rather than a summer heat wave, his voice was more like a crisp fall breeze or the gentle warmth of a spring one. He had been writing a lot of epic poems recently - his go-to for approaching History of Magic assignments especially - so such flowery imagery was much more commonplace.

In any case...he had reserved himself to not having his advice taken and simply being an option, which lead to its own quiet frustrations and itched his insecurities.

"Apollo is quite healthy, as are all his hooved companions," he chuckled while scratching the top of the abraxan's head just between his ears and tossed his mane around just a bit. "Hand me one of those hoof picks from the wall, will you? Please?" He patted Apollo's neck and set the now empty bucket down before slipping into to the stall along side the very handsome beast. "You want to learn the ropes a bit more or...just watch?"

She was getting better about that too. Slow progress, but progress all the same. Especially since this term began. She had thought she would be lost at Hogwarts this term, without Phoebe, but it had turned out to be just the opposite (despite her willingness to admit to it, at the moment). Of course, plenty of mistakes were being made (many, many mistakes) and it was a lot of trial and error (sometimes more error than trial), but at least she was finally listening to herself along the way. Mistakes that were results of her own choices, rather than the choices others wanted for her.

She still had a lot to figure out. That much was obvious... But maybe, with time, she would come to learn that she could figure it out.

"I'll have to take your word for it," she decided, offering Cooper the tiniest smile in concession as she moved to grab a hoof pick from the wall. "I'll help." She likely wouldn't come down here on her own next term, but spending all the time with Cooper while he was here felt absolutely necessary. She didn't want to take even a minute of it for granted. And so, she slipped into the stall behind him with the hoof pick in hand. "Do you think animals understand us when we talk to them? She was sure that Jimothy did, but she wanted that sweet confirmation.

Creatures Club Meeting - All students welcome!!

For a few days, a section of the barns near where two of Professor Amstern's own horses where stalled had been roped off from visitors for a few days, much to the chagrin of Chardoneigh who was an incredibly social stallion. He'd be pleased to receive some attention from students if any arrived for the regularly scheduled creatures club meeting. Cyril hoped for the Abraxan's sake there were attendees today, and that after meeting the newest occupants there would be some interest in giving the stallion some much needed additional attention.

But... all in good time for that. To begin with, Cyril had set up a game for the students with a prize of sorts at the end, should the winner want it. It was similar to the style of a muggle game, Jeopardy or something of the sort his granddaughter Naia liked to watch with him. Why she enjoyed it when she got the answers wrong a majority of the time was a mystery to the man, but as long as there was some enjoyment. Besides, he figured it might be something fun to do for the students as well. Perhaps even some good exam review for those with approaching dates.

A blackboard is against the wall, turned away from the entrance so students won't see the questions right away and have time to think on them. Professor Amstern is standing nearby, bouncing on the balls of his feet as he waits for anyone to arrive. Hopefully they remembered the time, or had seen the notice on all the common rooms.

FearlessLeader19 03-19-2022 05:34 PM

There was at least one attendee.

Jude had arrived and by the looks of it, he was the first student. He scanned the place in an attempt to figure out what today’s meeting would be about. There was a blackboard facing the wrong way, an abraxan and of course, a professor. Not much to go on here but perhaps the meeting would have something to do with winged horses?

“Hi, professor!’’ Jude grinned, noticing the bouncing. It was always nice to see others so happy. “Something tells me you have something exciting planned today.”

Nordic Witch 03-20-2022 10:38 AM

Bella was next after Jude to arrive. A creatures club meeting she wasn't going to miss. Plus they needed something fun, when the castle was crumbling to pieces around them. The problem with the door to the common room was still giving them all trouble every other day. It was luck at this point if Bella could enter and leave the snake den without trouble.

Plastering on a big smile the dark haired fourth year girl, headed over to stand next to her friend. "Hi Jude, Hi Professor Amstern!" she greeted happily. A backwards facing blackboard was probably a part of the meeting. In the mean time though. "Professor, can I go give the abraxan a pet before everyone arrive?"

MadAlice 03-24-2022 06:49 PM

Violet's attention was immediately caught by the beautiful winged horse, so much so that she barely managed to mumble a greeting to Professor Amstern. In fact, she was halfway over to the stallion before it occurred to her to ask, "Is it all right if we touch him?", and already her hand was reaching slowly out.
