Muggle Worthy Excuse Committee

This is a local Committee whose job is to explain away any magical accidents or occurrences which cannot be magically cleared up or completely removed from the minds of Muggles, or which Muggles do not develop their own explanation for. Remember to put on your Muggle thinking caps and think like a Muggle, clearing your head of all magic. Once the Committee comes up with the proper muggle news worthy material, it would then be presented by the Committee Leader to the Department Head.

Mindy entered the Muggle Worthy Excuse Committee's workroom. She was the first one there. As the Committee's leader, Mindy had the largest desk, which was placed in the center of the room.

Filing cabinets were lined up again two walls - they were full of the Commitee's past documents and paperwork. A short tray was set on one corner of Mindy's desk. This was where the accident reports were supposed to be put before she distributed them among the Committee members. Mindy's desk also contained an array of other items: a silver utensil cup, which held quills and spare ink bottles; a moving photograph of Mindy with her mum, grandmother, Aunt Linda, and Aunt Heather- they were all smiling and waving, and occassionally, Heather would make a silly face; a green folder, filled with finished reports that needed to be presented to Marius; and a used coffee cup from the day before. The drawers on Mindy's desk contained many things, too, but she didn't dare look through those. She had failed to organize them for the fourth year in a row.

Mindy took a seat on the black chair behind her desk. Its color conflicted harshly with the light purple of the woman's robes. After taking a swig out of the coffee cup in her hand, Mindy placed the cup beside the one from the day before. She eyed the accident report tray. It was empty; that was unusual. "Hmm..."

Shrugging off this strange occurance, Mindy assumed the reports would come in within a matter of minutes.

An Urgent message flies through the room in the shape of a paper airplane and lands on the Lead Excuse Committee's desk.

A wizard was found with a wand in hand as he cast an exploding spell to hide his evidence that he was stealing cauldrons from a local maker. His neighbors reported to the muggle police the incident they witnessed. A world-wide muggle newspaper, The Global News, has began reporting the incident in the paper and others are taking notice within the muggle world.

It is your job to make sure other muggle newspapers do not reach this information and we need to make sure the next person receives the proper wording for what exactly happened.

This will be presented to the Head, Marius, when your task is finished. Once approved by Marius, it will then go to the Minister of Magic.

Mindy had been looking at the picture of her family with a dazed expression on her face for the past ten minutes. She was remembering a certain incident involving all five of the women in the photo and a ten foot tall birthday cake.

Mindy's attention was only diverted when she noticed an airplane shoot into the room and land in her tray. She no longer jumped at the sudden arrival of these messages; Mindy had gotten used to it sometime in her four years.

After giving the picture a fleeting chuckle, Mindy picked up the message. She flattened it out and read it. After reading it through once more, Mindy sighed. Just Obliviate the entire country if you have to, the woman thought. She often had thoughts like this, but they were never spoken aloud. Mindy was just thinking of silly ideas that would get her out of working.

Mindy twirled her chair around in a circle. Still no one else had arrived. She grabbed a self-inking quill, realizing that she might as well get started on this case alone. No need to wait around for the others when she could get a good start on her own.

Mindy began to chew on the end of her quill as she scanned over the report again. The explosion would obviously need to be explained. And if the muggle saw the man's wand, that would need explaining as well... She continued to chew on the quill's end, trying to come up with a creative yet logical idea.

Melanie stepped into the workroom and saw her boss there. She walked over to her. "Ma'am, did you receive the urg---." Then she looked and saw that Mindy was reading the message. "Exactly how are we supposed to approach this ma'am. This would be my first assignment and i'm kind of unsure what to do."

Mindy was a bit shocked to be addressed as 'Ma'am.' She wasn't that old. Heck, she wasn't old at all! Mindy was only 26. After a moment of chuckling, she said, "You can just call me Mindy. No need for formalities here."

Mindy coughed into her fist before explaining. "Well, basically what we need to do is come up with a story to tell the muggles, explaining what happened. By the looks of this," she held out the report for Melanie to take, "we need to find a excuses for the cauldrons and for the explosion." Mindy smiling slightly.

"Oh, sorry. I just thought that since you are kind of in charge of our group, that is hould address you as ma'am." Melanie sighed with relief. "Well, then, Mindy. I think i understand my job here now. This is my first job since i graduated from Hogwarts." Melanie stopped suddenly thinking that she was saying information that was not important. She sat in a chair close to Mindy and started to think about possible things to say to the muggles. "Give me a few minutes."

Mindy smiled, happy to be addressed by her name rather than a more proper title. "I'm sure you'll like it here," the woman said, smiling. "It's usually a lot of fun." Mindy giggled.

She nodded, needing a few minutes herself.

Melanie smiled at Mindy."i like it here already. Everyone seems so nice." Then she continued thinking for a while. "We could say that the explosion was caused by some type of bomb." Then she thought again. "Oh no, then they'd go searching for evidence of a bomb then, wouldn't they. Muggles can be so difficult. We have to think outside the box" Melanie got up and started pacing the room

The Muggle Worthy Excuse Committee was next on Ricki's check list. After lingering a while longer than the Auror Headquarters Ricki decided that this area was also safe. Though it was a bit busy. After nodding to the people in the room Ricki Bunny moved on again.

After hearing Melanie's suggestion, it didn't sound bad really. "Maybe we can have a bomb there that was harmless and disarmed," pipes up Amy quite suddenly, "and explain that it was a malfunctioned experiment by a highly secretive group (we posing as that group) and had to keep it on the low key. His wand would have been the remote or thing that made it work. How about that?" Whoo, that was a lot.

Melanie looked over at Amy and smiled. "I think it's a good thing your here, since i wasn't able to expand on my suggestion." Melanie grinned. "But that is a great idea, only we wouldn't say that the wand is the remote for the bomb, we could say that the remote for the bomb looked like a wand."

Mindy sat back and listened to the two girls brainstorm, occassionally nodding in agreement and frowning once or twice. They had a good start to it, but the idea would need a little tweaking.

"Location?" Mindy said. "Not much." She scanned over the report again. "We know that it was picked up by a world-wide newspaper. And it's likely that smaller, local newpapers will be reporting it any day now."

"Thanks Mindy," Amy says, "that complicates things what with not knowing about the location and a world-wide newspaper. Do you have any ideas Mindy? Any one else?" Amy steps back and let's someone else speak up.

Mindy nodded at Amy. "Well, you were talking about saying the remote looked like a wand, but I really don't think it's overly wise to mention a wand at all. Of course, it might've been reported in the muggle paper that the wizard was seen holding what looked like a wand, but I don't think we should draw any more attention to it than that. We'll just say that he was seen by the neighbor holding the bomb's remote."

Mindy sighed quietly. "They idea you've got started is good. But we need to make it clearer. More specific. Could you explain it to me once more?" Mindy asked Amy. She was smiling slightly.

"I agree with Mindy. It's best not to mention a wand to them, besides they could twist the tale and wonder why the wand was there in the first place or how the remote for the bomb happened to be a wand. They are many complications to that story. But i think we should go with the malfunctioned experiment and leave out the remote entirely." Melanie was pleased with what she said.

Taking a deep breath to prepare, Amy begins to recap. "Let's see, we would be posing as a top secret science or space international organization - so top secret even we don't know the name - that has had an experiment that went haywire. I and Melanie have mentioned that it could be a bomb, but I agree now after a break that wouldn't be very wise (I know exactly how their media would spin this). We wouldn't need to mentioned a thing about the wand.

"But, I feel this isn't going to work now, I don't know. I think we do need something more simple so the media doesn't go wild on this. You are right Melanie, this is getting complicated. Let's put this on the back burner and let it simmer. Any more ideas?"

Mindy nodded to both of her co-workers. "What else could we say caused the explosion, then, if not a bomb?" she asked. Mindy took a long, refreshing drink from her coffee cup.

Melanie thought for a while. What else could cause and explosion? "Hmm, what about a gas leak? The gas could have been accidentally left on, filling up the room, pressure builds up. A person passes, lights a-a..what's it called...a cigarette. Ignites the gas causing the building to explode."

"Yes that's the point. I think the muggles would believe that. And it could probably have an impact on some of the smokers, causing them to quit smoking so that something like that doesn't happen to them." Melanie giggled to herself.

Rider had been in his own little world, and finally snapped back into reality. He saw a few people talking about something.
"Hey, wait, whats going on? Im sorry...im just a bit dazed today," he said innocently, not wanting to get in trouble or anything. He ran his hand through his hair, and smiled gently.

"Nice of you to join us back in the present time, Rider." Amy says to him in a playful sort of way.

"I like the gas was accidentally left on," she continues to the others, "if we say it's a leak, it would create chaos. Anyway, we can say that after extensive...snap what's the word...oh, investigations, the explosion was an accident and was caused by the gas being left on and a passer-by tossing a lit match towards the house. Luckily, no one was home at the time, having gone to the store to get some sugar. How's that sound to you all?"

Rider nodded at what she said. He didnt fully know what was going on, but he knew what she was talking about.
"That sounds, um, great. I think they would beleive that!" he replied, sitting back down in his chair, and leaning back on it.
