Default 'Turtles All the Way Down' by John Green (Sa16+) [SPOILERS]

Welcome to The Book Seekers' Book of the Month for May 2020! If you don't know what Book of the Month is, there's more information here but, in a nutshell, it is a monthly event during which we all read the same book and discuss it here.
This discussion will be active until June 15th. Additionally, Northanger Abbey's discussion thread will also remain active until May 15th.

This month we're reading Turtles All the Way Down by John Green!

Age Rating | Sa16+
Genre | Contemporary
TW | Anxiety, OCD
Summary from Goodreads | It all begins with a fugitive billionaire and the promise of a cash reward. Turtles All the Way Down is about lifelong friendship, the intimacy of an unexpected reunion, Star Wars fan fiction, and tuatara. But at its heart is Aza Holmes, a young woman navigating daily existence within the ever-tightening spiral of her own thoughts.

In his long-awaited return, John Green shares Aza's story with shattering, unflinching clarity.
Let's go over some ground rules...
  • All Book Club Rules and SnitchSeeker Board Rules apply in this forum.
  • You can discuss ANYTHING that is related to Turtles All the Way Down in here. However, it must be kept SPOILER FREE until at least May 15th. You can include spoiler-y content as long as it is under a spoiler tag. Remember that other people might not be as far along in the book as you.
    • Any posts that contain spoilers (that aren't under spoiler tags) will be edited by a Book Club mod.
  • This discussion will be active until June 15th. That being said, the thread will remain open for everyone to discuss the book after that time, too.

There's more? There is! While we're reading and discussing Turtles All the Way Down, there are other related things that you can get involved with.
  • Feeling inspired? Contribute some Turtles All the Way Down fanart to our Bookish Fan Art thread.
  • Submit Turtles All the Way Down related posts to our Tumblr!

If you have issues or queries, contact Harron Peasley, natekka or Stormdancer – and don't forget to nominate books for future Book of the Months!
Ready, Set, Read!

I just finished reading this book at the end of April; it's somewhat different from other John Green books.

I'm SO CURIOUS to hear what you guys think!

I've had this book in my cupboard for over 6 months now, I read the first 20 pages and got a feeling that it's the same premise as Looking for Alaska??? But maybe I judged too soon! I'll read as part of this thread and get back to y'all.

The beginning is the WORST though, Laila-la, you're not wrong there. UGH. The lunchroom scene is SO ANNOYING. The kids. It's terrible. It's a terrible start, ngl.

Also, the premise IS similar (someone missing? ooooooooooh gee) but it gets better.

I liked that the book, as it progresses, is very Indianapolis. If you've never been caught in a loop going round or off I-70, then ope, you're probably not from the American Midwest. Lucky you.

Okay, I'll give it another try Ro-la! I do love John so I guess I can power through even if I hate it. XD

.... also your last sentence doesn't make sense to me :')

I've read several John Green books myself but not for several years. I remember liking A Fault in Our Stars, Looking for Alaska and (I think) An Abundance of Katherines, but not Will Grayson, Will Grayson. I've heard good things about this book, though - especially in regards to how it deals with anxiety, so I'm curious and excited to read it!

I read this one last year, so I"m interested in how you're all doing on this one. I have to say, as someone who deals with anxiety thought spirals, reading about someone ELSE spiraling... triggers my spirals. Is that just me?

No, it's not just you.

At first, it was obnoxious to read. I still think the first chapter (the cafeteria spiral) is kinda crap writing. BUT...

SPOILER!!: the tiniest of spoilers, here we go again, Ern
...by the time we got the hospital scene where she drinks hand sanitizer, I was cracking up. It felt a bit satirical at that point. It seemed like her anxiety got a little bit better when she was talking to Davis? Who has his own issues? But then it got worse again when she decided she couldn't kiss him because germs?

idk man, those parts weren't all believable always

ALSO, in general, here's my review. I wrote this at like 2? 3? 4am? Idk, I'm not 100% sure what I was trying to say to myself.

SPOILER!!: My Goodreads Reading Review lulz
4 stars out of 5, written on April 19

Do you ever wander around your house late at night and think to yourself, will I ever be a writer like John Green? Even at his most experimental (which is not *that* experimental), with a rushed ending (which I didn't even like), an abundance of hasty allusions (I did enjoy these), and a lot of potential that doesn't quite live up to this reader's expectations, he's still a brilliant author. I understand the haters. I get that it's formulaic. I accept the criticism. But I still stayed up two hours past my bedtime to finish reading Turtles, and this has been the benchmark of a good book for me since I read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in 1999. But as I contemplate what I am trying to say with this review, I realize I have so many questions still. I want to know why he wrote this book the way he did??? and what he is trying to say with this one?? I want to know why do I like Davis Pickett? Why do I like any of the characters in this book? What's with the title? I felt like that story (where the title appears) doesn't really fit with the rest of the book, but I might just need a few more hours to digest this all. Last question though, seriously: Does John Green have a deal with Disney, in that he makes a penny per page for every Chewbacca reference? Was anyone else a little bit annoyed by Daisy and Aza's "friendship"? I felt like they were not great for each other. I have a lot to mull over with Turtles All the Way Down, but I'm glad I gave this one a chance. 3.5 stars out of 5, for now, as I consider what John Green is going to write next. Also, he receives 0.5 stars for making me feel nostalgic about Indianapolis (of all places), which was the last non-essential town I traveled to before Quarantine 2020.

This book was on my wishlist, but sadly I couldn't manage to find it in my usual bookstore (because due to covid they have to suspend international order sighs) and it's not on Scribd either

hiiiii !!! I finished a book before the end of a book of the month. Also, I think the only other John Green book that I've read is Looking for Alaska, which was like ages ago I have A fault in our stars and Abundance of Katherines, but yea XD So I listened to this via audiobook and wow.

SPOILER!!: i still don't know

I enjoyed it. I've never been to Indianapolis but my idea of the midwest is middle-of-nowhere and this story did capture that. Also the characters were definitely intriguing to learn about and I think i enjoyed getting to hear the arc and the mental health that Aza struggled with and was working to overcome. She had a good support system though. Also I feel like some of the mental health gave me crazy ex girlfriend vibes in how John Green was able to discuss it in a mostly tactful way and basically to say you're not alone. The ending gave me feels too about the maturity with Davis and his brother choosing to not be selfish despite having everything ... and the ending about love. The friendship. That despite everything, life goes on. And no one says goodbye unless they want to seeee you again and likeeee what??? Does that mean that Davis and Aza end up together? Meeting each other again?? or they'll just always be apart of each others lives? It was slow to start, but so worth it once it really got into the story.

Yeah, I could find it on kindle, amazon or scribd... and usually books are on one of the three... but I'll keep looking and will 100% come back to this thread once I've read it. I'm glad some people got to read it now though.

I'll look under the spoiler tags once I have read it

It is painfully Midwest. And as someone from Indiana originally I can picture Indianapolis and the desolate-ness of it (and by that I mean the never extraordinary things that occur there.

I had to push through it. It was a hard sell at first. The last 60 pages was where it got good.

Okay I’m here. And even though I know it’s a okay for spoiler free talking I didn’t want to be that person since some of you are having difficulty getting a hold of the book.

So here it goes
SPOILER!!: my thoughts... finally

I didn’t love this. It was hard to initially get into because of the beginning. Plus it seemed like it was going to be more focused on the missing person less on the spirals, thoughts, and trials of Aza.

I hated daisy. I know she’s the bff and all but she’s horrible to her. I couldn’t even be okay with them making up after the hospital.

But her and Davis was so hard to read—not in a uncomfortable because it’s uncomfortable way—because you could tell she was trying and it just wasn’t working. That was hard.

It was okay doesn’t make me want to read more John Greene necessarily but I did like the reasoning in the title.

I just finished listening to the audiobook today and I have sO MANY (mixed) EMOTIONS.

MY RATING: ★★★☆☆

There were things I liked about this book, but also a lot of things that I didn't like. I think my biggest gripe with this book was that I was never really sure what the plot was?? Or why it mattered... Like, Davis' dad was missing and it was a thing, but it was almost like the book didn't care about that and didn't care if you cared. It felt very thrown together in a lot of ways. Almost like John Green had this IDEA (!!) about writing a novel about a girl with crippling anxiety and the plot and secondary characters were just afterthoughts. I mean, character-driven books aren't a bad thing, as long as the characters are complex and interesting and, honestly, I struggled to tell if the characters in Turtles were or not. I think the problem was that I could see the potential in all of the characters to be more complex, so I felt let down that they weren't? Davis and Daisy especially.

What I did like, however, despite it being hard to read sometimes, was the representation of Aza's anxiety and the consistency (I think that's the word I'm looking for?) of it. In particular, the thought spirals and the way the book doesn't shy away from the fact that her anxiety can't just be miraculously 'fixed' by logic or a person or the perfect words. It was just part of her.

SPOILER!!: personal experience, TW: anxiety, dermatillomania
I especially connected to the parts about Aza's thumb/bandage situation. It's not the same thing, but I've struggled with dermatillomania (which is a skin picking disorder related to anxiety and OCD) for as long as I can remember. So reading about a character with similar, albeit not the same, experiences was... I don't know, it was special. It's something I haven't seen represented in books before really, so it was a very raw experience reading about it in this book. And I think it was done extremely well.

It's definitely not just you! There were a few times that I had to put the book down for a while to avoid exactly that.
