Default 'The Book Thief' by Markus Zusak (Sa13+) [SPOILERS]

Welcome to The Book Seekers' Book of the Moment for March and April 2021! If you don't know what Book of the Moment is, there's more information here but, in a nutshell, it is a bi-monthly event during which we all read the same book and discuss it here. The first month is focused on reading the book, the second is focused on discussing it. This discussion will be active until April 31st.

Our current Book of the Moment is... The Book Thief by Markus Zusak!

Age Rating | Sa13+
Genre | Historical Fiction
Summary from Goodreads | It is 1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier, and will be busier still.

By her brother's graveside, Liesel's life is changed when she picks up a single object, partially hidden in the snow. It is The Gravedigger's Handbook, left behind there by accident, and it is her first act of book thievery. So begins a love affair with books and words, as Liesel, with the help of her accordian-playing foster father, learns to read. Soon she is stealing books from Nazi book-burnings, the mayor's wife's library, wherever there are books to be found.

But these are dangerous times. When Liesel's foster family hides a Jew in their basement, Liesel's world is both opened up, and closed down.

In superbly crafted writing that burns with intensity, award-winning author Markus Zusak has given us one of the most enduring stories of our time.

Happy March, fellow Book Seekers!

I'm excited for this one! I've read The Book Thief once before - last year, I believe - and really enjoyed it. I gave it 5 stars on Goodreads, in fact! I've also watched the movie adaptation, which is definitely one of my favourites, COUNTLESS times. I read it on my kindle last time but thiiiiiiis time I'm going to listen to the audiobook, so I'm curious about how different this experience will be.

OOooh exciting! I can't wait to hear your thoughts on the different experience.

I believe I tried to read this book when I was younger, and I struggled to get into it: I think I was 11/12, though, so fingers crossed for a different take this time. I'm going to see if we've still got a copy because I think the library has a waitlist.. If not, I'll probably get it on my kindle app!

I'm looking forward to hearing your opinions, then, if this is a genre you've not read much of! I, too don't read a lot of Historical Fiction, although the books I have read within this genre all seemed to have been about WWII.

This is such a good book! It makes me happy that we're having another discussion on this one. Ulfa, if you can get stuck in/stick with Death the narrator, you'll enjoy it, I think.

I think the last time I read it was in *insert cringe emoji here* 2015? Not sure. I definitely taught it one year at least. I think I'd read it for the first time in college so that was 5,000 years ago/around when this discussion was going on. Hehe.

I might rewatch the movie because I KNOW I don't have the time to reread this in full right now. But yeah. I wanna join the discussion cos I like talking to ya'll and hearing your thoughts.

So... It turns out that the last time I read this book wasn't last year but was actually 2018. WHERE has the time gone?! It definitely doesn't feel like it's been three years since I read it.

So far I'm undecided. It's not difficult to listen to, but it is quite a long book so it's taking me a while to get through at 1x speed. I have just under 10 hours left. I'm hoping for some nicer-ish weather this week so I can go for a few walks and get decent chunks of it read.

I am very excited about this book. It has been on my TBR list for quite some time. I actually am listening to it. It has been good so far. I do enjoy the point of view of death. It makes you think, even if fiction, on some things.

Sarah thinks I'm cute | Shan's safe space.

Hello everyone!

Hope you all enjoyed the book - and if you didn't, please come here and tell us why!

The first few questions I wanted to ask to kick start this discussion are:

What did you think of the characters?
What did you think of the narrator? Why did Zusak chose Death - what did he bring to the story?
What we're tour favourite and least favourite parts of the book?

Remember - all spoilers are welcome now!
