Default 'Northern Lights' by Philip Pullman (Sa13+) [SPOILERS]

Welcome to The Book Seekers' Book of the Month for September 2020! If you don't know what Book of the Month is, there's more information here but, in a nutshell, it is a monthly event during which we all read the same book and discuss it here.
This discussion will be active until October 15th. Additionally, we have various other Book of the Month discussion thread's also active.

This month we're reading Northern Lights by Philip Pullman!

Age Rating | Sa13+
Genre | Fantasy
TW | War, Kidnapping
Summary from Goodreads | When Lyra's friend Roger disappears, she and her dæmon, Pantalaimon, determine to find him.

The ensuing quest leads them to the bleak splendour of the North, where armoured bears rule the ice and witch-queens fly through the frozen skies - and where a team of scientists is conducting experiments too horrible to be spoken about.

Lyra overcomes these strange terrors, only to find something yet more perilous waiting for her - something with consequences which may even reach beyond the Northern Lights...
Let's go over some ground rules...
  • All Book Club Rules and SnitchSeeker Board Rules apply in this forum.
  • You can discuss ANYTHING that is related to Northern Lights in here. However, it must be kept SPOILER FREE until at least September 15th. You can include spoiler-y content as long as it is under a spoiler tag. Remember that other people might not be as far along in the book as you.
    • Any posts that contain spoilers (that aren't under spoiler tags) will be edited by a Book Club mod.
  • This discussion will be active until October 15th. That being said, the thread will remain open for everyone to discuss the book after that time, too.

There's more? There is! While we're reading and discussing Northern Lights, there are other related things that you can get involved with.
  • Feeling inspired? Contribute some Northern Lights fanart to our Bookish Fan Art thread.
  • Submit Northern Lights related posts to our Tumblr!

If you have issues or queries, contact Harron Peasley, natekka or Stormdancer – and don't forget to nominate books for future Book of the Months!

HELLO.

DAEMON.

Literally this is my moment to shine. I read these books a long, long time ago and they're probably up there as my favourite childhood book series along with HP. Northern Lights is a beautiful book and Lyra, the protagonist, is everything I wanted to read about as a twelve year old (I might have been thirteen or possibly eleven, my memory does not retain these details). I hope that whoever participates in this current BotM will enjoy the book, and come talk to me about it because one can never talk enough about this book. I've read a lot of commentary on it over the years, ranging from love to absolute hatred, and I'm curious to see what people will think.

*points to the nerd above* Dani tried to get me to read this trilogy for yeeeeeeeeears and I was scared I wouldn't love it and would upset her. I read all three books within a month at the end of last year and I FLAILED SO BADLY all the way through.

I loooooooooooove this series so much.

I'm going to be starting the next companion books soon but I just wanted Lyra's original adventures to have time to sit with me because I literally adored her and the other characters like Lee and Iorek so much.... and Pan. duh.

I don't want to sound really dumb, but my library has it as The Golden Compass, is this the same book or a different book in the series?

Sarah thinks I'm cute | Shan's safe space.

So, if I remember correctly, I tried to read this book when I was about 10 and couldn't get into it at ALL. Which made my heart hurt when Dani and Tori have raved about that book so much.

And here I am, approximately halfway through. I'm listening to the audiobook as I wasn't able to get my hands on a physical or ebook copy, so it's been different - I only usually listen to non-fiction audiobooks when I'm driving long distances for work, which I haven't been doing lately, and I've found myself very easily distracted at some times. I'm enjoying it, though - the version I'm listening to is a BBC 'acted' one, where each character is voiced individually rather than a narrator reading the whole thing through. At times I have found it to be quite slow moving, but this might just be (like I said) me getting distracted.

ANYWAY I really like the characters. And I'll be back here with more thoughts when I've finished reading the book.

I also read this series as a 12 or 13 year old or so anddd I'm struggling to remember anything I liked about it. I remember forcing myself to finish it. I think it's because I disagree entirely with the author's worldview? And themes? And writing style?

But I'd love to hear from someone (aka Dani) who LIKES this series.

So I'm behind on this book and I am listening to it. Some books I think work with Audio and some I don't. This one has really caught my attention in the audio and I'm really liking it. I find the demons very interesting and honestly wish I had one

Everyone that read it, what was your favorite part?

What part did you not like at all?

How could it have been better?

Was the movie good, if you saw it?

Okay, I am still undecided with this book, which means that I probably didn't like it. I don't really have any desire to read the next in the series, and usually I'm hungry for more. I enjoyed the story, and I really liked (or disliked, in some cases) the characters and their development, but I do think the overall writing was very slow and there were times when I felt things were dragged out. So I think the story and the daemons the most, but I didn't like the way it was written.

I haven't seen the movie or the tv series, so I can't comment on them, but I'd love to hear what other people thought?

I think because I listened to it the voice really drew me in. I can see where you could say it drug out in places. It did in a few, but overall I did really enjoy it. It isn't want I have to rush out and read the next book, but it is one that I will probably at some point pick up the next book. The demons were very interesting to me and I caught myself wondering what that would be like or what the animal shape of mine would be.
